Neighboring mines, like men who live in the same environment, often assume similar characteristics. In the Bridge River area of the Lillooet district in central British Columbia there is a remarkable exception to this rule. The Pioneer mine has a simple fissure over 3000 ft. long, with no faults of more than a few feet and with only minor variations in width; the Bralorne mine, 2½ miles away at the other end of the same intrusion, has developed one of the most intricate vein and fault systems in the West. Hinged faults displace the main vein for hundreds of feet, and sometimes become valuable veins themselves. The width of ore varies in a few yards from 2 to 60 ft. Changes in grade of ore are just as abrupt. The rocks that follow the veins or are cut by them often grade into one another or into the ore with no definite contacts. Although the complexity of the structure has left many problems unsolved, the development has indicated a fascinating geological pattern. The Bralorne is in the eastern portion of the Coast Range, 55 miles by spectacular mountain road from the Pacific Great Eastern Railway station of Bridge River. The adit tunnel runs easterly from Cadwallader Creek, a tributary of Bridge River that flows into the Fraser River. Steep mountains rise from 3300 ft. elevation above sea level at the creek to peaks and ridges at 8000 to 9000 ft. altitude. The lower slopes are heavily wooded while above 5000 ft. bare rocks, glaciers and snow-fields extend far above timber line. See Fig. 1. Although many elements reduce the tendency to porosity in steel castings, manganese, silicon, aluminum, calcium, titanium and zirconium appear to be most generally suitable for the purpose. The manganese and silicon contents are usually maintained in a fairly constant range. Silicon-killed castings often are made to be sound with little or no addition of the stronger degasifiers. In many cases, however, it is more practical to utilize the stronger degasifying elements, aluminum, calcium, titanium and zirconium. Since they greatly modify the composition, shape, and distribution of the nonmetallic inclusions, and thereby the ductility, the strong deoxidizers must be used in such a way as to form the least harmful types of inclusions. As the reasons for failure always to obtain good results have not been obvious, an effort has been made to determine the mechanism of solidification of steels deoxidized to produce certain types of inclusions. Diagrams representsing the mechanism of their formation have been constructed from the appearance of the nonmetallic constituents and have not only illustrated the limiting features of specific deoxidizing treatments with respect to inclusion formation and ductility, but have also indicated a relation between inclusions and resistance to hot tearing. Three different types of deoxidation treatment have been used for obtaining sound castings with relatively high ductility. The first method is to make and cast the steel under such conditions that deoxidation with silicon and a small addition of a strong deoxidizer assures soundness. The effective addition that will promote soundness without causing the formation of intergranular inclusions varies with the furnace practice and composition, but may be limitled to about 0.025 per cent Al, Zr or Ti. Up to 8.10 per cent Ca and 0.15 per cent V are also used for this purpose. The inclusions in these steels are characteristically glassy silicates and round or irregular sulphides. As pointed out by Sims and Lillieqvist,1 the formation of fine intergranular inclusions, which are detrimental to ductility, limits the amount of strong deoxidizers that may be added.

Recent investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebertl,‡ Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses. Metallographic Investigation A briquette of molybdenum powder when heated in a carburizing atmosphere at 1500" to 1600" C. for several hours develops the carbon-rich layer shown in Fig. 1. The carburization was accomplished by placing the briquette in a carbon tube, which was heated in the hydrogen atmosphere of an alundum muffle wound with tungsten resistor. While the macrostructure indicates two distinct shells, and suggests the possibility of two carbon-rich phases, no evidence of this condition could be detected by the microscope, which revealed but one high-carbon constituent. This carbide forms next to the molybdenum as a relatively dense, light-colored zone (Fig. 2) which passes abruptly into an outer layer of spongy texture. As will be noted later, only one intermediate phase was observed in the X-ray photograms prepared of different locations in the carburized zone. In the oil-refining industry, steel comprises by far the greatest proportion of the materials used in construction work, but with an enormous number of alloy steels and nonferrous alloys available, and a greater knowledge of their properties and corrosion resistance, a substitution first in the "hot spots" and then in locations of moderately severe corrosive conditions will be made as the greater expense can be justified. In new construction work, advantage is taken of the experience already gained and appropriate materials used, whether for high temperatures and pressures demanding additional strength or for corrosive conditions. The locations, however, where equipment in operation constantly requires replacement will soon become evident, as will the necessity for replacement in more resistant materials, if considerable down-time is to be avoided. In what direction and how far to go in the matter of alloys then becomes a question of the highest importance. Obviously, any replacement with more costly material must be justified economically by the promise of longer life, thereby saving both material and installation costs besides the reduction of loss of production. Where the equipment is overcapacity and a regular schedule of cleaning periods is in force, the last item frequently must be ruled out and justification made on the basis of the first two only. Installation of material that will outlast the remainder of the equipment and have no recovery value must also be avoided; this is particularly important in temporary construction or in old equipment that will soon become obsolete. Test Methods Either one of two methods or a combination of both, in the absence of reliable data in similar services, may be adopted to determine to what extent replacement with other, and perhaps more expensive, materials is justified. A unit may be constructed incorporating different metals or alloys so that comparative service may be obtained under the same service conditions; this has been applied in many instances, such as condenser and tank construction, but the opportunities for inspection may be few and

The study of the high-temperature oxidation of pure metals, intensively pursued experimentally since the pioneer work of Pilling and Bedworth1 and supplemented by the recent theoretical work of Wagner2 is now well advanced. The important field of low-temperature oxidation—i.e., oxidation extending only through the temper color range of thicknesses with the formation of thin oxide layers in the range from 0 to 1000-2000 ?ngstroms—has not, however, reached so satisfactory a state, owing largely to the experimental difficulties that attend the formation and study of thin films; most of the work has been performed on abraded specimens whose surface irregularities approximated the thickness of the films formed. It has been pointed out that the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces are different and that the difierence may be related to the orientation relationships that obtain between the metal crystal and the superimposed oxide crystal; it has also been suggested that this orientation dependence should manifest itself in rates of oxidation and perhaps also of corrosion in aggregates bearing preferred orientations.3'4 An attempt to measure the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces of alpha iron demonstrated this difference in rate,4 but the dependence of rate on orientation was not simple; the method of measuring thickness, consisting of a color comparison with barium stearate multi-films of known thickness, was not wholly satisfactory. For these reasons it was felt that a study of the rate of oxidation of single crystals prepared with surfaces as smooth as possible, using a sensitive method giving true film thickness, should be profitable. Copper was chosen because of the ease of reduction of the primary oxide film and because the orientation relationships between metal and oxide and the composition of the oxide films formed at low temperatures are known; for thin films formed at low temperatures, Cu2O alone occurs.22-24 Experimental Procedure Various methods of surface preparation were attempted in order to obtain a surface that would oxidize uniformly and repro-ducibly. Electrolytic polishing by the method of Jacquet5 and electrolytic and mechanical polishing followed by annealing in vacuum and in purified hydrogen at various temperatures were tested. The procedure finally adopted consisted in a fine metallographic polish followed by an anneal in purified hydrogen at temperatures of 900° to 1000°C. for 12 hr. or more. The surface so produced was very bright and smooth, with no trace of specular etching (though some grain-boundary etching was observed); indeed, fine scratches produced by the final polish were entirely removed by the high-temperature anneal. BRAZIL has had an industry based on ocean beach deposits of heavy minerals containing monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite for well over 40 years, but except at the very earliest period, prior to 1906, and again during World War 11, has this industry been at all comparable in size with similar operations in other countries. Limiting factors have been neither a lack of reserves nor lack of markets (except for zircon). Although poor local transportation and shipping facilities have handicapped the development in Brazil, these conditions were perhaps equally bad (when mining operations started) in the Indian State of Travancore, and in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, in which states the principal production of beach deposits of heavy minerals has occurred. The outstanding restraints on the Brazilian industry have been the lower quality of the Brazilian minerals, the relative small size of individual deposits that were known until recently, the lack of interest of Brazilian investors in mining ventures, and the unfavorable climate for investment of foreign capital under Brazilian mining law. The lower quality of the minerals is indicated by the fact that the Brazilian monazite carries only 5 to 6 pct Tho2*, and the ilmenite 561/2 pct TiO2, whereas the corresponding Travancore minerals carry 9 pct Tho, and 60 pct TiO, respectively. The Brazilian zircon is a dirty brown color (which can be removed readily) as compared with the gleaming whiteness of the Australian zircon. An inadequate market for the abundant zircon that will be available in any operation in Brazil is certainly a heavy restraint, since otherwise it could be an important byproduct. The oxide of zirconia, baddeleyite, that has come from Brazil is from other sources.' Since the Brazilian beach sands carry only a little rutile, that mineral has not been available as a valuable byproduct to help finance the operations. Substantial tonnages of rutile have been exported from Brazil. The sources of this mineral are stream placers and residual deposits over gneisses in the States of Goyaz, Minas Geraes, Ceara, etc. (Leonardos,' and Chambers". With these handicaps, Brazilian production from beach sands has been marginal, and there has been only one consistent producer. This is a company, originally French, which was called Companie de Franco-BrazilliCne, but, with the downfall of France in 1940, became Brazilian under the name Monazita e Ilmenita do Brasil ("Mibra"). This company has operated several deposits in the vicinity of Guara-pary, in the State of Espirito Santo. Its office and plant has been at Guarapary. Recently a company called, "Fomil" (Fomento Monazita-Ilmenita) started operations. This company was organized by the Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia, and such share as a foreign company can hold under Brazilian law has now been acquired by the Lindsay Light and Chemical Co. of Chicago. When the writer went to Brazil in the fall of 1940, he found that no general survey of the beaches had been made except for a thorough study of part of the area by Abreu.4 The paper by Miranda6 had not then been written. The federal Geological Survey and Department of Mines knew only of the existence of the deposits in Espirito Santo south of Vitoria, and had a hazy idea that others might be found north of Vitoria. One deposit in Bala was known in Rio, but the larger one at Guaratiba was not known, although a Frenchman had prospected

During an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investigation was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this system as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. 5. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon systema was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essential features, except the temperature of the peritectoid line above 830" C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centcrcd cubic with a lattiee constant of 2.848 ,&. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexagonal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will he adhered to in the present paper. Preparation of Samples The alloys were melted in vacuum in a high-frequency furnace. from copper cathodes containing 99.98 per cent Cu, and specially refined silicon supplied by The Electro Metallurgical Co. FLANKING the Valley of Mexico on the northeast is a mountain range known as the Sierra de Pachuca. This northwesterly-trending range is about 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, its summit attaining an elevation of more than 10,000 feet above sea level, or 2000 feet above the valley floor. Pachuca, a town of 50,000 inhabitants, lies nestled at the southwest base of the range, 60 miles northeast of Mexico City. Three miles to the east, just over the summit and on the northeasterly slope, is the mountain town of Real del Monte with a population of about 20,000. These are the two principal towns in a 40-sq mile area whose yield has brought the district to its high rank among the world's silver producers. Total production probably exceeds 1.25 billion ounces of silver and 4.5 million ounces of gold. Exploitation by the Spanish was under way by 1530. As the mines were deepened operations became handicapped by the inadequate method of handling water with horse whims and bull skins. To offset this disadvantage a two-mile drainage tunnel was started in 1749 and completed ten years later. John Taylor of London acquired the mines from the third Count of Regla in 1824 and formed the Compania de Real del Monte y Pachuca. Two years later Cornish pumps were brought from England. A Mexican company purchased the British interest in 1848 and within a few years resumed an old project of driving a second, lower three-mile drainage tunnel, completing it in 1857. After Americzn interests acquired control of the property in 1906 operations expanded to an unprecedented scale, despite periods of political strife, unstable prices, labor problems, and a growing burden of taxation. An idea of the scale of operations may be gained from records of the last two decades prior to 1947, the last year for which production information is at hand, during which time production ranged from 1.4 million to 1.1 million tons per year, and the combined development and exploration, exclusive of diamond drilling, amounted to about 18 miles annually. Pachuca differs from Zacatecas and some other Mexican silver vein districts that flourished and de- clined in earlier centuries in that a substantial part of its total production was made after 1900. While the district's accelerated activity in this century was largely due to the successful application of the cyanide process to the treatment of the ores, improved pumping methods, and new mechanical equipment, it was at the same time stimulated by the opening up of important new orebodies as a result of active and extensive exploration of the vein system. Some of these orebodies were found on veins which terminate upward far below the surface, and though these particular veins do not crop out, they show relationship with a type of alteration which may be their surface expression. The district has been studied by many able geologists, and a large store of information has been accumulated, much of which is recorded in published as well as private papers. Wall Rocks Extrusive Rocks: The Sierra de Pachuca is a thick accumulation of Tertiary eruptive rocks consisting mainly of flows, breccias, and tuffs. Numerous recognizable volcanic vents within the range itself manifest that the range was built up by material ejected from these vents. The maximum thickness of the volcanic pile is not known, but from deep exploration and from relationship with Mesozoic sediments to the north and east it is inferred that the average thickness in the main part of the district may be at least 6000 ft. The extrusive rocks comprise four general types, which in ascending order of age are: andesite, rhyolite, dacite, and basalt. The veins are confined largely to the andesite, the dominant rock of the region. DuXing 1942, Louisiana attained the rank of fourth among the great oil-producing states of this country. Its present prominent position is the result of an orderly and systematic program of exploitation with emphasis on conservation. Even before the functioning of M-68, the Federal spacing order, development and production in Louisiana were regulated by various acts of legislation, the most recent of which and by far the most effective is Act 157 of 1940. Under the authority of this act, it has been possible for the Department of Conservation to hold many public hearings and thereby to secure data and evidence regarding the feasibility of issuing rules and regulations for development of various oil and gas fields in the state. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. To cope with the problems encountered when drilling at greater depths and to reduce the amount of physical effort required on the part of drilling crews in making round trips, a new type of semiautomatic power-operated drilling machinery has been developed which permits round trips to be made without the drill pipe being touched by hand. This equipment consists of hy-draulically operated tongs which perform the stabbing, spinning, and tong-ing operations, and two power-operated racking units mounted in the derrick for carrying the pipe to and from the center of the hole and positioning it on the mat and in the rack. With this equipment all of the operations of the various units are controlled remotely by manipulation of hydraulic valve levers and electric switches. INTRODUCTION As horsepower rises to meet the demand for deeper drilling, it is necessary to increase the weight of surface drilling equipment. Also, the duration of repetitive operations in making round trips to change bits is greatly increased with depth. Harder formations encountered at greater depths reduce bit life rapidly, resulting in more frequent round trips and in some instances more time is consumed in changing bits than in drilling. Since the introduction of the first rotary employed to drill for oil in 18951, there has been relatively little change in the general procedure for making up, breaking out, stabbing, and racking drill pipe in making round trips to change bits. The conventional method of making round trips with the drill pipe requires that drilling crews lend strenuous physical assistance to manually operated tools. Although many new devices have been developed to improve efficiency, increase speed of making round trips, improve safety, and reduce the amount of physical effort required in handling drill pipe, it is considered a vital necessity to substitute automatic or semiautomatic power-operated machinery for many of our more or less manual operations if extremely deep drilling is to be carried out successfully on a production basis in the same manner as our shallower drilling of today. Field tests have been made of remotely controlled power-operated tongs, spinner, stabber, and racking equipment. The tongs, which include a built-in pipe spinner, are mounted on a column, are capable of gripping and supporting the weight of a 90-foot stand of drill pipe, and are provided with means for moving the pipe vertically as well as to and from the center of the hole. The racking equipment consists of two units, one at the level of the conventional monkey board and the other at the first girth on the ladder side of the derrick. Most of the physical effort of making round trips with drill pipe has been eliminated in that all of the operations of tonging, spinning, stabbing, and racking of pipe on the floor are controlled by an operator in a seated position by manipulation of hydraulic and electric valve levers and buttons. The driller is relieved of operating the cathead, leaving only the hoisting and slips to be controlled. Complete round trips are made without the drill pipe being touched by the drilling crews. Although the speed of pulling or running a single stand with the power-operated equipment is approximately the same as that with conventional equipment, it is possible to maintain this rate for long periods, whereas fatigue slows crews working conventionally during round trips, especially under adverse weather. After completing round trips with this equipment, drilling crews are not exhausted, consequently, are able to perform effectively their duties while drilling, which is essential for maximum over-all efficiency. Safety is substantially improved as the derrickman performs his duties from a platform enclosed by rails and the tong lines and spinning chain are eliminated from the derrick floor. The hazards encountered in racking drill pipe on the floor and in stabbing are also eliminated. Figure 1 shows a drawing of a derrick equipped with the power-operated drill'pipe handling equipment.

The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district, with proven recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 Mg (2.4 million oz) of gold, has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell mine, is a 70130 joint venture between Freeport Gold Co. and FMC Gold Corp., both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and FMC Corp. The Jerritt Canyon district is located in the center of the Independence Mountains in north-central Elko County, Nevada, approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of the Carlin gold mine and 68 km (42 miles) north of Elko. Although the discovery of a commercial gold mine at Jerritt resulted from Freeport's exploration activities, the initial identification of a gold prospect in this area was a consequence of a program by FMC in the search for antimony. Their program was, in part, based on data in the Nevada Bureau of Mines Bulletin 61, "Antimony Deposits in Nevada." Work on the property began in 197 1 with geologic mapping followed by sampling and geochemical analyses. FMC geologists, including Robert Hawkins, Russell Hayden, and Hal Hurst recognized the striking similarity of the area to the geologic environment of Newmont's nearby Carlin gold deposit and soon focused on the gold potential. Increases in the price of gold served to stimulate interest and support for the exploration program. Geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for gold and trace elements usually associated with gold. A strong gold anomaly was found on the North Fork of Jerritt Canyon, which was called the Alchem anomaly. Drill-testing of this anomaly in 1973 revealed significant grades and thicknesses of gold mineralization in the lower portion of the Roberts Mountain formation. This initial discovery and subsequent close-spaced drilling proved the existence of several small pods of low-grade, gold-bearing material which cropped out at their up-dip edges, causing the surface anomaly. The mineralization was very encouraging, but was not, by itself, of economic importance from the standpoint of either grade or tonnage. Freeport Exploration Co. established a district office in Reno in late 1974 with responsibilities for exploration of hard minerals in the Basin and Range Province. Emphasis of the program was directed to the discovery of precious metal deposits. Enfield Bell, as District Manager for this new office, was particularly interested in the Independence Mountains and when the opportunity for a joint venture with FMC became available in 1976, it was aggressively pursued. Enfield Bell and David Stevens evaluated the FMC data and with the support of management formulated a bid in competition with 23 other companies. Freeport was selected by FMC as partner and a joint venture agreement was successfully negotiated. In mid-summer of 1976, Freeport Exploration Co. began an expanded program of detailed mapping and geochemical sampling under the direction of Bell and Stevens that led to new interpretations of the structural and alteration patterns. Hawkins' contribution during this period must be recognized since he not only was one of the original geologists assigned to the antimony and subsequently the gold investigations, but shortly after the start of the joint venture exploration, he was hired by Freeport Exploration Co. as the project geologist for the venture. Hawkins had studied the central Independence Mountains for his thesis and his understanding of the regional geology provided an excellent background for the continued exploration of the gold de- posits. His interpretation of the structure in the vicinity of the Alchem anomaly was of significant help in the Freeport exploration program. Drilling, based on this new under- standing of the geology, revealed the edge of the Marlboro Canyon ore body, which is now being exploited in the Bell mine. THESE notes should be considered as a further discussion of Mr. S. W. Miller's paper on "Some Structures in Steel Fusion Welds."1 In that paper and the resulting discussion; several conflicting opinions were expressed as to the identity of the needles or small crystals present in oxyacetylene and electric welds. An interesting specimen of an electric weld examined by the writer seems to afford new evidence regarding the needles, that may be worth presenting at this time. The specimen consisted of a piece of 3/8 -in. (9.5-mm.) steel plate, about 2 ¼ by 1 ¾ in. (5.7 by 4.5 cm.) in size, on which some iron had been deposited by arc-welding to a depth of about 3/16 in. (4.7 mm.). The weld appeared to be a very good one, with no noticeable break or boundary between the plate and the deposited iron. Sections for microscopic examination were cut in three planes at right angles to each other through the deposited metal, two of these sections also extending through the steel base. After polishing in the usual way, the microscope showed that the deposited metal was full of very small, round, gray, oxide spots, while the steel plate contained quite a number of alumina inclusions and a little slag. The sections were etched with nitric acid in ordinary alcohol, and structures similar to those described by Mr. Miller were then displayed. Fig. 1 shows the typical appearance of the deposited metal, which was quite uniform in all three of the planes examined. The round dark-gray spots are oxides, and the pale angular crystals are evidently what, Mr. Miller called cementite and Mr. Jeffries martensite, while Dr. Ruder and Prof. Boylston suggested that they might be nitride. The boundary between this structure and the steel base was sharply defined under the microscope. Fig. 2 shows the structure of the plate just under the weld; this is almost martensitic and resembles a coarse-grained casting. This coarse cast structure soon became finer as the distance from the weld increased, finally, becoming very fine, with numerous small particles of sorbite. This very fine structure, shown in Fig. 3, became coarser in turn and finally merged into the original normal structure of the steel plate, shown

A BRIEF study of the effects of material and processing variations upon the tensile properties of steel formed from mixtures of iron and carbon was made in order to provide information regarding the .properties obtainable in iron-carbon compacts as influenced by forming pressure, sintering temperature, and graphite particle size. Sintered steels formed from mixtures of iron and graphite have been studied by Stern,1 who investigated the effect of various percentages of graphite on compacts formed from electrolytic iron that were repressed and heat-treated after sintering. A further study, by Stern and Greenberg,2 is concerned with the heat-treatment of steels formed by the carburization of iron compacts, and Margolies3 has reported work on the simultaneous sintering and carburization of iron-powder parts. Glauch4 investigated the effect of various types of graphite on the properties of iron-carbon powder alloys but did not determine the effect of different particle sizes of the same graphite alloyed with different types of powder. In the investigation reported in this paper, powders typical of those produced by electrolytic deposition and the decarburization of shotted steel scrap were used. The powders were mixed by tumbling in a jar mill with graphite powder ground to an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and 16 microns (as determined by microscopic measurement). The properties of the iron and graphite powders are presented in tabular form as Table I. In order to obtain the maximum information from a minimum number of test specimens, the study was divided into two sections with one set of specimens treated identically in each section as a basis for comparison. In the first section, iron powder produced by the shotting and subsequent decarburization of scrap steel was mixed with 2-micron graphite powder, pressed at 50,000, 100,000, and 200,000 psi, and sintered in hydrogen at 1200°C for the periods of time ranging from 15 to 120 minutes. In the second section of the investigation, electrolytic iron powder was mixed with graphite of an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and i6 microns, pressed at 100,000 psi, and sintered at temperatures ranging from 1000° to 1200°C. for periods of time of 30 to 180 minutes. By following this procedure an indication of the effect of the following variables upon the density and tensile properties of iron-carbon powder compacts was obtained: (I) forming pressure, (2) sintering time, (3) particle size of graphite powder, (4) sintering temperature, (4) type of iron powder.

Probably the earliest concentration of iron ore in this country was carried on in the northeastern magnetite areas. Magnetic concentration was relatively simple and gave a concentrate that, after agglomeration, and in spite of being high in phosphorus because of the dry concentrating methods then in use, was satisfactory blast-furnace feed. Production from the northeastern magnetite area languished after the discovery and development of the Lake Superior ores, where there was seemingly an unlimited tonnage of high-grade ore, first the Michigan ores, and subsequently the still larger deposits of Minnesota. For years only the higher grade, direct shipping ores of the Lake Superior district were mined. Those of Michigan, and of the Vermilion Range in Minnesota, were hard ores and came principally from underground mines. The softer ores of the Mesabi came partly from underground mines, but mostly from the enormous deposits that could be worked by open-pit methods. The costs of ore from these open-pit deposits, even with the high initial cost of stripping, were so low that the underground mines of the Mesabi could hardly compete. The so-called Old Range ores, of Michigan and of the Vermilion. Range of Minnesota, were hard and lumpy, and opened UP the burden in the blast furnace, therefore making possible harder driving with greater output. Also, some of these ores were of such grade and physical characteristics that they were suitable for charge ore in the open hearth. These ores, therefore, commanded a price premium, and could compete with the softer, finer, but cheaper, Mesabi ores. The big tonnage reserves, however, are on the Mesabi. and it is these big open-pit deposits that constitute our stock pile of iron ore, from which we are drawing so heavily during this war period. On the western end of the Mesabi the ore was found to be high in silica, and not suitable as furnace feed. As early as 1902, attempts were made to concentrate this so-called wash ore and by 1910 the first washing plant was put into operation. The Process was very simple, consisting essentially of a sizing and washing operation, with scalping screens, logwashers, and tables, which later were replaced by classifiers. Ore particles finer than 100 mesh were deliberately wasted, because these fines were undesirable in the furnace. Fortunately, these tailings were impounded, and already are being reworked. Before long some of the low-grade ores began to require more elaborate treatment than the simple washing operation and, tables having been discarded because of their low capacity, in favor of classifiers, jigs were next introduced. These were able to discard coarser pieces of tailing than classifiers. jigs are in active use today, various improvements having been made in their design and application. Various other machines and methods of concentration have been tried from time to time, and have in turn been discarded for more improved processes. Soaps have hem used as collectors for many years, but only in the last eight years have other long-chain paraffin salts been used. It may be anticipated that these newer collectors will be used mainly with nonsulphide minerals, for which the xan-thates and similar compounds are of little value. On the other hand, the xanthates are both cheap and effective for sulphide ores and seem likely to retain their present cminence in this field. During 1938 and 1939 two of us (E. E. W. and I. W. W.) commenced a comprehensive investigation of the principles underlying the use of paraffin chain salts as flotation reagents. This research was sponsored jointly by the University of Melbourne and a group of Australian mining companies. † A broad, semiquantitative survey was then made of the field covered in the present paper. This was followed in 1940 by further work by one of us (K. L. S.). In 1941 the investigation was taken over by the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia. Discovery of some principles upon which are based the flotation of minerals by paraffin chain salts was followed by their application in the development of processes for the recovery of certain strategic minerals from their ores. Promising results in the flotation of cassiterite from various ores will be described in a subsequent paper. The Paraffin Chain Salts 'he basic requirements for a "collector " in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polar-nonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2)nX where .X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). Many compounds of similar constitution are available, but the usual polar groups are: -Co2Na, -So3Na, -So4Na, — PO4Na2, or an aminonitrogen group, the

BRAZIL has had an industry based on ocean beach deposits of heavy minerals containing monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite for well over 40 years, but except at the very earliest period, prior to 1906, and again during World War 11, has this industry been at all comparable in size with similar operations in other countries. Limiting factors have been neither a lack of reserves nor lack of markets (except for zircon). Although poor local transportation and shipping facilities have handicapped the development in Brazil, these conditions were perhaps equally bad (when mining operations started) in the Indian State of Travancore, and in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, in which states the principal production of beach deposits of heavy minerals has occurred. The outstanding restraints on the Brazilian industry have been the lower quality of the Brazilian minerals, the relative small size of individual deposits that were known until recently, the lack of interest of Brazilian investors in mining ventures, and the unfavorable climate for investment of foreign capital under Brazilian mining law. The lower quality of the minerals is indicated by the fact that the Brazilian monazite carries only 5 to 6 pct Tho2*, and the ilmenite 561/2 pct TiO2, whereas the corresponding Travancore minerals carry 9 pct Tho, and 60 pct TiO, respectively. The Brazilian zircon is a dirty brown color (which can be removed readily) as compared with the gleaming whiteness of the Australian zircon. An inadequate market for the abundant zircon that will be available in any operation in Brazil is certainly a heavy restraint, since otherwise it could be an important byproduct. The oxide of zirconia, baddeleyite, that has come from Brazil is from other sources.' Since the Brazilian beach sands carry only a little rutile, that mineral has not been available as a valuable byproduct to help finance the operations. Substantial tonnages of rutile have been exported from Brazil. The sources of this mineral are stream placers and residual deposits over gneisses in the States of Goyaz, Minas Geraes, Ceara, etc. (Leonardos,' and Chambers". With these handicaps, Brazilian production from beach sands has been marginal, and there has been only one consistent producer. This is a company, originally French, which was called Companie de Franco-BrazilliCne, but, with the downfall of France in 1940, became Brazilian under the name Monazita e Ilmenita do Brasil ("Mibra"). This company has operated several deposits in the vicinity of Guara-pary, in the State of Espirito Santo. Its office and plant has been at Guarapary. Recently a company called, "Fomil" (Fomento Monazita-Ilmenita) started operations. This company was organized by the Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia, and such share as a foreign company can hold under Brazilian law has now been acquired by the Lindsay Light and Chemical Co. of Chicago. When the writer went to Brazil in the fall of 1940, he found that no general survey of the beaches had been made except for a thorough study of part of the area by Abreu.4 The paper by Miranda6 had not then been written. The federal Geological Survey and Department of Mines knew only of the existence of the deposits in Espirito Santo south of Vitoria, and had a hazy idea that others might be found north of Vitoria. One deposit in Bala was known in Rio, but the larger one at Guaratiba was not known, although a Frenchman had prospected

The subject " Safe Timbering of Working Places in Mobile Loading" is one that requires an analytical study of the strata both above and below the coal seam as well as the characteristics of the coal seam itself. The projection or mining plan must be based on economic roof control in which the application of timber can be minimized without incurring cost increases in other phases of production. The several types of loading machines in common use today are not adaptable to the same projections or timbering systems. Consequently the type of equipment to be used must also be considered. For these reasons the writer does not believe that the problems of timbering in working places can be discussed without simultaneously considering economic production as well as the safety of men and the conservation of equipment. Prior to the introduction of loading machines as a substitute for the pick and shovel system of loading coal, the care and maintenance of the individual working places were generally the responsibility of the coal loaders who worked in them. Up to that time very few coal companies had developed and applied fixed and definite standards for timbering the working places in the mines they operated. It is common knowledge that mechanical loading of coal has had several false starts in the last twenty-five years and it is only in the last decade that it has developed to the stage at which we now find it. During this twenty-five year period the management of the more responsible companies have come to realize the tremendous importance of roof control in coal mining. From a safety viewpoint, the lack of roof control has been and still is responsible for more than a third of the industry's annual fatality experience. In recent years workmen's compensation and insurance rates have steadily increased while the profit margin has decreased almost to the point of elimination. From an economic operating viewpoint, the failure to properly control roof is quite often the most costly single phase of coal mining. Since the manufacturers of loading machine equipment have so improved their machines that normal care and maintenance can reduce to a minimum the time lost because of mechanical failure the production delays from other causes have assumed a far greater importance. Roof control in the broad sense and in the light of concentrated mining plans or projections that are adapted to mobile loading should be regarded as one of the major problems in the inseparable phases of production and safety of the workman and equipment at the working face. The subject of this paper cannot be treated properly unless what is said here is based upon the broad and fundamental problem of genera' roof control. The suc-cessful solution of a problem arising in any industry must have its origin in a complete analysis of the known facts or factors that pertain to it. The several illustrations
