THIS paper describes the results of a series of tests carried out to determine the partition of dodecylamine between distilled water and the surface of quartz at various concentrations of dodecylamine acetate in solution. An adsorption-column technique was utilized for this purpose. Ralston and Harwood, of Armour and Co., had synthesized marked dodecylamine acetate for us.' In their preparation which we employed, 0.0007 pct of the total carbon was the radioactive isotope, carbon fourteen. Unmarked dodecylamine acetate of high purity was also prepared by them for our use. The presence of carbon fourteen in the dodecylamine enabled us to analyze quantitatively for dodecylamine on the surface of quartz, using a radioactive-tracer technique. The method used was that known as internal gas counting of carbon dioxide, formed by oxidation of the amine. This method has already been described, "3 ' and the reader is referred to these papers for details of the analytical method and procedures. and surrounding liquor, a technique analogous to chromatographic columns was utilized. The experimental setup is shown in fig. 1. The dodecylamine-acetate solution was made up in a volumetric flask and poured into the glass funnel shown. It was allowed to drip slowly onto the quartz bed, the rate of flow from the funnel reser- voir being controlled by a hose clamp. The quartz column was contained in a small, fritted-glass filter (size 20 mm, C). The beaded top edge of the filter was cut off to enable the holder and contents to fit into the open end of the 30/45 joint on the combustion tube. This combustion tube is used in the analytical train described in a previous paper.' A piece of gum-rubber tubing joins the bottom of the fritted-glass filter to a filter flask, which in turn is connected to a vacuum line, or water aspirator. FOR the past several years there has been considerable interest in the development of zirconium and zirconium alloys for application in nuclear reactors. In a portion of the development work being conducted, attention has been given to the development of high-strength zirconium alloys. One of the most outstanding alloys developed in the course of this work is Zr-4 wt pct Sn-1.6 wt pct Mo.' Fabrication and Test Methods Over 50 ingots of zirconium containing either tin and molybdenum or both have been evaluated in the process of selection of an optimum composition. Two epiclastic horizons in an Archean volcanic sequence host the gold occurrences on the Dunraine property near Wawa, Ontario, Canada. The Grace horizon of cherty and pelitic tuff strikes northnorthwest and dips east. Native gold occurs with arsenopyrite in bedlike and podlike bodies of quartz lenses and stringers set in a pelitic matrix. The Parkhill horizon of lithic graywacke with associated flow-breccia strikes southwest and dips south, Native gold occurs with minor sulfides in similar bodies of quartz erratic within the Parkhill horizon. The auriferous bodies occupy paleotopographic channels and troughs within the two horizons. The former producers are the Parkhill mine with 1689 kg (54,300 oz) Au, Darwin mine with 473 kg (15,200 oz) Au, and Van Sickle mine with 48 kg (1536 oz) Au between 1902 and 1944. The gold occurrences are syndepositional with the host volcanic sediments laid during a pause in explosive volcanism. Fumaroles along steep gullies on the flank of a subaqueous volcanic center precipitated aprons of auriferous silica-sulfide mud. Downslope slumping resulted in exhalative debris flows; gold concentrated in flexures and depressions along slumpage channels. Renewed explosive volcanism covered the auriferous sediments with pyroclastic tuffs, arresting the slumping of in situ fumarolic deposits.

The value of the earth resistivity method in groundwater studies in Illinois has long been recognized. Owing to the sharp electrical contrasts between sand and gravel deposits and glacial till, alluvial silt or underlying shale, much of the earth resistivity prospecting has been of a relatively elementary nature and has been highly successful. Approximately 90 pct of earth resistivity interpretations by the State Geological Survey have been accurate for practical purposes. Four studies involving fairly simple geologic situations are presented in this paper as typical cases. FOR the past 20 years electrical earth resistivity exploration has been used in Illinois in many phases of study undertaken by the State Geological Survey, chiefly in locating and outlining deposits of water-bearing sand and gravel from which to obtain ground water for municipal and industrial supplies. At least 43 municipalities in the state derive their total water supply from deposits of sand and gravel discovered by resistivity methods. These deposits occur in both Quaternary and preglacial valleys and within much of the glacial drift which covers a large portion of the state. In recent years there has been much demand from rapidly growing municipalities for help from the Illinois Geological Survey to extend existing well fields. Water supplies for many and varied industries constitute a considerable portion of the Survey's studies. The diminishing need of water supplies for railroads has 'been accompanied by an increasing demand by the oil industry for water for secondary recovery programs. The instruments used by the Illinois Geological Survey follow closely the commutated direct current circuits developed by O. H. Gish and W. J. Rooney' using the Wenner2 electrode configuration. More recently replacement of the hand-driven commutator by a synchronous vibrator has led to increased ease of operation and accuracy. Continuing improvement of equipment and technique has led to many changes in the instruments, but the operating theory remains the same. In the field operation at a selected station, four electrodes are set at equal distances in the ground 6 to 10 in. deep, in a straight line. THE sulfur content of coal is perhaps more important in the manufacture of illuminating gas than in any other coal-using industry. Whether the gas is made by the distillation of coal in retorts or ovens or by steaming incandescent coal or coke in the water-gas process, a portion of the sulfur present in the fuel always passes into the crude gas. Practically all the sulfur that remains in the finished gas is transformed into sulfur dioxide (SO2) when the gas is burned. Sulfur dioxide is a pungent suffocating gas and, if present in the air in any perceptible amount, is deleterious to health and comfort and damaging to house furnishings. So universally is this recognized that laws regulating the amount of sulfur that may be permitted to remain in the gas are very generally in force. The capacity of a plant to purify gas frequently limits the selection of coal for gas making. This condition may arise from different causes. Some plants were originally designed to handle a certain grade of low-sulfur gas coal, and very little leeway was allowed for growth or for the use of inferior coals. Other plants, when built, had ample capacity to purify gas from relatively higher sulfur coals, but their output has grown so rapidly that their purifying capacity is now limited and only- the low-sulfur coals can be handled. There is a great quantity of coal in the United States that would satisfy the requirements of the gas manufacturer, were it not for the high sulfur content. The coals containing less than 1 per cent. sulfur are becoming scarcer year by year and, in time, the gas industry will probably be compelled to use coals that are now considered out of the question.

THE smelting of galena in the ore hearth has been practiced in many countries for several hundred years with varying success. In the United States the water-jacketed American hearths and the Jumbo hearths have found some favor, in the Missouri lead belt, where large quantities of non-argentiferous galena concentrates are produced. In form and method of operation the ore hearth has changed but little since its earliest conception. A detailed description of the furnace is not needed here; it has been fully described in most works on the metallurgy of lead and in many technical papers. Since its field is restricted to non-argentiferous galena, containing over 68 per cent. of lead, its .use is limited to a few districts; and, on account of certain disadvantages attending its operation, modern sintering and blast-furnace practice has nearly driven it out of the Missouri field. It is not generally known that the cost of producing pig lead is smaller by the hearth method than by sintering and blast-furnace smelting. Yet it is doubtful if any metallurgist knowing this to be true would recommend an American hearth installation-by reason of the disadvantages which will be briefly enumerated. The furnace has been limited to a length of from 4 to 5 ft., requiring for its operation two men working an 8-hr. shift as a maximum. The product per man is small; the work is hot and laborious; and the difficulty of completely removing the dust and fume has made it a notorious source of lead poisoning. Although suitable, for, operations on a small scale a large number of hearths would be required for a plant smelting 10,000 tons of 68 to 70 per cent. concentrates per month; and the number of semi-skilled laborers would be six times the number of hearths-a condition which is prohibitive. On account of the high percentage of dust and fume produced, a large flue and bag-house installation is required and, in the past, the handling and re-treatment of. this dust and fume has been a serious problem.

The Copper flotation concentrate produced at Gortdrum mines contains about 1% Hg. This article deals with the treatment used to produce a substantially mercury-free copper concentrate. Metallic mercury is a byproduct. Nearly all the mercury in the Gortdrum concentrate is present in the copper mineral tennantite-tetrahedrite. This mineral is variably distributed throughout the ore body so that by selective mining it was possible to produce salable concentrate relatively low in mercury while the treatment plant was being built. Roasting was the only feasible method found for removing the mercury from the concentrate, and it was decided that this should be done in an atmosphere with limited oxygen. A multiple hearth furnace is used. Mercury soot is condensed from the gas stream and treated to produce prime virgin mercury. Problems were experienced at first with materials handling, oxygen control, cooling of the calcined concentrate, treatment of the mercury soot, and in the metallurgical accounting. Precautions were necessary to avoid health problems. The plant is now operating reasonably well. The value of the mercury produced does not warrant the cost of the plant but without it, the copper concentrate could not be sold.

The problem of vein formation has been of particular interest to the writer for years. As his work for a long time was confined largely to districts showing large deposits of copper ore, it was natural that the efficiency of replacement, as one if not the chief control of the emplacement of the ore, seemed a particularly attractive hypothesis. Of late years, in almost daily underground work in the Guanajuato district, he has collected evidence which makes it certain that in a number of cases the ore solutions were under sufficient pressure to force the rock walls apart and to hold them apart, thus offering an open space for the deposition of vein and ore-bearing material. This paper will concern itself with conditions frequently met with in hypogene ore deposits of the vein type, and will deal in particular with ore occurrence in precious-metal veins of the type classified by Lindgrenl as epithermal deposits, or metalliferous deposits formed near the surface by ascending thermal waters2 and in genetic connection with igneous rocks. To account for the emplacement of this type of ore deposit various writers have suggested the following agencies: 1. Shattering of the wall rocks. 2. Pressure of growing crystals. 3. Magmation, as treated at length by Spurr3. 4. Replacement. 5. Openings produced by folding. 6. Shearing due to gravity. 7. Shrinkage produced by the passage of pre-ore solutions. 8. Contraction joints produced by lateral secretion. To this list there may be added another agency, a discussion of which forms the basis of this paper: 9. Pressure of the ore-bearing solutions.

IT is not the intention of the writer to enter into a discussion of the relative merits of the duplex process as compared with the straight scrap and pig iron process, working under the same conditions, but rather to present in a general way several modifications of the former process, and then describe the method adopted by the Maryland Steel Co., as best suited to local conditions, and also to meet the metallurgical problem presented in the removal from the iron of an unusual constituent-chromium. The principal factors to be considered in deciding whether or not duplexing should be employed are: (1) Chemical constituents of pig iron. (2) Variety and quantity of steel to be produced. (3) Relative cost of pig iron and scrap. (4) Regularity of operation. (5) Capital to be invested. (6) An existing Bessemer plant. Having decided to adopt the duplex process, several combinations may be used, viz.: (1) Acid-lined converter with basic open hearth. (2) Acid-lined converter with electric furnace. (3) Basic-lined converter with basic open hearth. (4) Basic-lined converter with electric furnace. (5) Basic open hearth with electric furnace. The combination of an acid-lined converter with a basic open-hearth furnace is the one most commonly employed, and as it is the one best adapted to the conditions encountered at the plant of the Maryland Steel Co., we will briefly outline the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods of working.

It is a grave objection to the present system (or rather lack of system) of mineralogical nomenclature that, in the very great majority of cases, the name of a mineral gives no hint of its chemical composition, one might almost say no suggestion, however faint, of anything connected with it or characteristic of it, chemical, physical, historical, geographical, geological, or lithological. In becoming acquainted with a mineral, in addition to learning its composition and important characteristics, one must also learn a name wholly unconnected with any of them. It has occurred to me that a system might be devised in which the name of each mineral should express at least an approximation to its ultimate composition. It is far easier to learn the names of most minerals than their compositions. Most of us are familiar with the names and appearance of many minerals, especially among the silicates, of whose compositions we have but a rough notion. It would be the aim of such a system to enable us, in making the one slight effort of learning the name of a mineral, by that same effort and involuntarily to learn its composition, which now requires an additional and a much greater effort. I have worked out a system designed to meet this requirement, and its description occupies the remainder of this article. Doubtless there are many devices on which could be based other systems fulfilling the requirement above set forth better than that about to be described does, and at the same time furnishing names

This study investigated roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines in eastern Kentucky and utilized geologic methods for Predicting roof conditions in advance of mining. In the Highsplint mine, the roof was classified in four categories or conditions: Condition A and B (Laminated Shale); Condition C (Rolling Sandstone with Shale in Pockets); and Condition D (Zone of Major Sandstone Roll(s)). Structure contour and isopach maps of the Darby coal bed and associated immediate roof rocks were used to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. Trend mapping in the mine and on outcrop provided more detailed control for roof projections.

Samples taken at different heights in the lead blast furnace of Brunswick Mining and Smelting corporation were studied to determine the phases present in order to interpret the reactions In the furnace. The main phases in the blast furnace feed are Pb3Ca2S13011, Zn ferrite (ZnFe204), and hardystonite (Ca2ZnSi207); rninor ones include lead and a Pb silicate. The temperature in the furnace varies from about 300°C at 4.2 m above the tuyeres to 1150°C at 1.1 m. There is no evidence of reactions in samples from points cooler than 800°C. Some reaction occurs between 950° and llOO°C and the lead sinter is nearly decomposed at about 1150°C. The first evidence of reaction was the decomposition of Pb silicate to lead and S102. At higher temperatures the Pb Ca2Si3011 decomposed to form lead and hardystonite (Ca2ZnS120rf. The Zn required for hardystonite was derived from the Zn ferrite which apparently re-equilibrated to a new Zn ferrite with less Zn. The decomposed sinter consists essentially of lead, hardystonite, wustite and a Zn ferrite with a low Zn content.

It is often written that the purpose of any mining operation is to produce efficiently, safely, and profitably, and always to search for more efficient, safer, and more profitable methods. To provide for continual improvement, an attitude that is not only reasonable but also imperative, there is an obvious need for a high standard of competence among the ranks both of supervision and of those being supervised. It naturally follows that, to achieve this standard, planned training in every level of an organization is a definite necessity. There are many factors involved in the need for training, and the scope of a program is influenced by answers to such questions as: "What is the geographic location of the project?" "What are the duties of each job?" "What is the source of the working force and supervision?" "What are the hiring standards for various jobs?" "What is the availability of trained personnel?" "What is the availability of outside training facilities?" The approach in this chapter will be to consider a need for a maximum of training, and it may be applied by the reader to whatever extent is considered necessary in each individual situation. 14.2-1. Administration. It is a basic responsibility of every supervisor at all levels to train those who work for him. However in a very extensive training program, which involves supervisors and the working force, includes both compulsory and voluntary participation, uses outside and in-plant methods, and where the increasing complexity of jobs requires more specialization, the establishment of a training department is definitely war- ranted. This will consist mainly of instructors for related classroom training and preparation of manuals, etc., and the necessary clerical help. A training staff does not relieve the various departments of their responsibility to train, but it does have facilities, experience, and contacts that are inval-

Introduction THE use of roll scale in the Bessemer process dates back, to the "best of our knowledge, at least 20 years. It was first used by the Ohio Steel Co.; Youngstown, Ohio (now the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co.) under the direction of Sam, MacDonald, Superintendent of the Bessemer Department at these works. Two 10-ton vessels and one blowing engine capable of blowing one heat at a time were employed. The object of using the scale was to -shorten the length of the blow; or in other words, to increase the production with the same equipment. Various means were tried out for introducing the roll scale into the bath of molten iron: It was shoveled into the vessel before the heat was charged, so that the metal would flow over the scale; it was shoveled into the bath after the vessel was turned up; it Was dumped into the empty iron ladle by the wheelbarrow-load, and at times wars dumped on top of the molten metal in the iron ladle. But the practice of introducing the scale into the iron ladle had to be abandoned on account of danger from explosions and of skulling the -ladles. It was soon learned that the proper place to charge the scale was in the empty vessel, so that when the molten iron was poured into the vessel it flowed over the scale, causing a considerable reaction to take place before the heat was turned up. Eventually, cylindrical chutes similar to those now in use were installed. Into these chutes the scale is dumped and carried into the empty vessel. Before this convenient means of introducing the scale was adopted, the Ohio Works had satisfactorily demonstrated that roll scale would increase production, by blowing 107 heats in one 12-hr. turn (1,087 tons) with one blowing engine, blowing one heat at a time; whereas, prior to the use of scale, the best practice at these works was about 80 heats under the same conditions.

IN view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of Llewellyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal- cross-sectional area, and 6,000 11). in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, while the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes.

ALUMINUM which has lost its original identity as to source may be considered as secondary. This would include scrap originating in the fabrication of aluminum, which is not consumed at the plant of fabrication, and all material resulting from fabrication, which has lost its original identity regardless of whether it be consumed at the plant of fabrication or not. In general, secondary aluminum may be divided into two classes, commercially pure and alloyed. The chief impurities found in commercially pure aluminum are copper, iron, titanium and silicon; while in aluminum alloys, copper, iron, titanium, silicon, zinc, manganese, magnesium, nickel, or tin, may be present in varying proportions. Occasionally lead and antimony are found in secondary aluminum alloys, especially if the alloy results from remelting vender's automotive scrap. Such alloyed elements as are found in the scrap cannot be removed on remelting. In this, the remelting of secondary aluminum differs from the smelting of secondary copper or most other secondary metals. The majority of secondary materials reach the consumer in the form of remelt ingot or remelt No. 12 ingot. This ingot varies greatly in quality, depending upon the source of the material, and the manner in which it is refined and blended. The principal differences between primary and secondary ingot are: 1. The composition of secondary ingot may be more or less indefinite. 2. Secondary ingot may contain more dross and oxide. Secondary ingot may, however, be used successfully in a great many products. RELATION OF PRIMARY PRODUCTION TO SECONDARY PRODUCTION Table 1, compiled from data published by The American Metal Market, gives an approximate idea of the relation of primary to secondary production. Information obtained from other sources leads the authors to believe that the figures for secondary production are somewhat low.

Although the process to which I refer in this paper has been in successful operation for nearly five years, during which time it has been introduced, superseding all other processes having in view the same end, in almost every lead refinery in the country, no description of it, giving economical data, has ever appeared in print, nor has the process been known in its details to any considerable number of engineers beside those conducting it at their works. A discussion of this subject at the present time becomes especially interesting in view of a late publication in the Prussian ministerial organ for Mining and Metallurgy, by Dr. Wedding, in which the method of treating the zinc-silver-lead alloy by distillation, as finally settled upon at Tarnowitz, is very minutely and fully described. It is the more interesting, because in that article reference is made to the American method in an unfavorable light, while, at the same time, it is clear from the article itself, that the most important details of the process, besides the one that it is conducted in black-lead retorts, mere not at all understood. In publishing herewith the details of our American method, one of my objects is to invite comparisons between our simple and direct process and the elaborate one at Tarnowitz. In extracting the silver from work-lead by means of zinc, it is always the intention, in this country, to obtain a zinc-crust so rich in silver that the rich lead resulting from subsequent distillation

Natural gas has been known to exist for many years in the St. Lawrence Valley, between Quebec and Montreal, and more partirularly in the vicinity of Louisville and Three Rivers, 74 and 94 miles respectively northeast of Montreal, and 98 and 78 miles respectively southwest of Quebec; the distance from Montreal to Quebec along the St. Lawreuce River being about 175 miles. It was not until 1880 that any practical explorations were begun with the hope of finding gas in sufficient quantities for commercial uses. In this year Messrs. Piret and Genest, of Three Rivers, sank a well near St. Maurice to a depth of 50 feet, where solid rock was encountered. A similar well was drilled through the glacial and allavial drift, in the same district, in 1883, by the Messrs. Renaud Freres and Dubois, to a depth of 70 feet before solid rock was encountered. In this latter well a strong flow of gas was obtained. The gas was an outflow from a very limited reservoir in the porous glacial gravel, which had been filled from the gas resulting from the decomposition of vegetable remains, which had been buried in the gravel at the time of its deposition. Subsequently, other wells were sunk in the same way, with the hope of getting gas in commercial quantities from similar reservoirs. It is recognized that in the early days of the petroleum industry oil was produced with practically no scientific or fundamental knowledge of the laws and principles governing its extraction from the ground. Only a few, if any, of those exploiting the oil resources made any effort to collect accurate scientific information. There was little need for it, for as is frequently the case where the supply of a natural resource appears inexhaustible and is greater than the demand, large profits were possible from merely skimming the surface with little regard to the efficiency or thoroughness with which the oil was obtained. With this policy in force, great quantities of gas were wasted and when the reservoirs ceased producing by natural means they still contained a large fraetion of the oil originally in them. The present tendency in the industry is toward conserving existing oil reserves. In order that greater percentages of the oil present in the ground may be recovered, efforts are being made to improve production methods and to rework depleted fields. If the production methods are to be improved intelligently it is essential that the fundamental laws be known and understood, consequently large amounts of money and effort are being spent in gathering data that will serve to define and interpret these laws. A great deal of attention is being focussed on the study of the motion of oil through an oil-bearing sand, the forces that cause it to move and the factors that affect its motion. It is recognized that one of the important factors is pressure, but its quantitative effect is not known. In a given field the rate of production declines with time and so does the rock pressure.
