This district commences near Pigeon River, the northeastern boundary between Minnesota and Province of Ontario, and extends entirely around the north shore of Lake Superior, terminating for the present at the Bruce Mines on Lake Huron. The discoveries of mineral-bearing veins have been confined for the most part to the lake shore, or to the country opened up by the Dawson Red River road. As yet the country back from the lake has been but little explored, on account of its roughness, being intersected by steep, rocky trap bluffs, 1000 or more feet high, and alternating white cedar and tamarack swamps. The forests are exceedingly difficult for prospectors. In many places Titanic piles of rocks, protected by chevaux-de-frise of dead cedars, with their hooked, tough, sharp branches, and a covering of spongy moss, sometimes several feet thick, successively guard against the discovery of hidden treasure. The Hudson's Bay Company for nearly a century have maintained trading-posts at Fort William and other points, which probably opened the way to the first discoveries that were made at Prince's Bay, near the western limit of the district. At this point a large vein was worked by Colonel Prince, the owner, as early as 1846. The richest part of the vein seems to have been on Spar Island, but work was stopped on account of excess of water. Sir William Logan states that a mass of ore weighing several hundred pounds and carrying 3 per cent. of silver was taken out. On the mainland small quantities of native and sulphide of silver were found, together with iron and copper pyrites, zinc blende, and galena, in a large spar vein. THE recrystallization and grain-growth phenomena of cold-worked metals have considerable industrial importance because of their role in the fabrication of metals. For this reason, and because of the general academic interest in the subject, these processes have received consider-able attention since the time of J. E. Stead's paper1 on The Crystalline Structure of Iron and Steel. There are considerable differences of opinion regarding the theory of recrystallization and grain growth and also differences in the observation of the modus operandi of the processes themselves. The value of many of the existing quantitative data on grain growth is decreased by the failure to distinguish between the grain sizes just after complete recrystallization and those resulting from coales-cence. For this reason also, the value of the diagrams of stable grain sizes, like those produced by Bass and Glocker2 and Czochralski3, is lessened in so far as an interpretation of the facts of recrystallization is concerned. It is hoped that the data presented in this paper will help to clarify and to simplify the facts relating to recrystallization, and at the same time will show that some of the present-day conceptions are unten-able. A paper on the theory of recrystallization, with additional data, will be completed in the near future by the writers.

Oil and gas and their derivatives continue to be stable products in West Virginia. In the midst of the cataclysmic happenings of 1930 to 1934, which have swept away banks and practically destroyed many other enterprises of presumably nonspeculative character, the possession of a royalty or working interest in a few old oil or gas wells has prevented disaster in literally thousands of homes. These old wells yield their daily quotas of basic commodities, which the public must have. Fortunately, the facilities of disposal in the Appalachian Province are so ample and well managed that the owner of such equities may be reasonably certain that his proportionate share of existing markets will be afforded him without much effort on his part. In most cases these investments are free from encumbrance or hypothecation, therefore the main uncertainty is the date of ultimate exhaustion at the source. Generally, this is known to be fairly remote. The net result has been that individual owners part with such investments only as a last resort. In sharp contrast to the action of the small owner of wells or royalties who has prudently refrained from jeopardizing his rather certain income by drilling new wells that may be failures, or of which the product may not be needed for the moment, has been the plight of various promotional enterprises in natural gas. Many of these ventures have been operated by amateurish remote control and practically all have been overloaded from the start with bonds and debentures, which could only be satisfied in a rising and expanding market; and with operating costs that have been exceedingly high because of widely scattered producing units and large overheads. Many of these promotions are now in receivership or bankruptcy and in various instances the original units have been recaptured by former owners and have again become profitable by reason of personal operation and elimination of all forms of overhead expense. New Development In 1934, the State issued 524 permits for drilling. According to the trade journals, 553 wells were completed, with 184 oil wells, 274 gas wells and 95 dry holes (Table 3).

Discussion of the paper of EZEQUIEL ORDOÑEZ, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 19.14, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2531 to 2536. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-Dr. Ordoñez is really the pioneer in the study of the occurrence of Mexican oil. His studies came at such an early time as to prove really prophetic. He was successful in pointing out the relationship of these oil deposits to the volcanic teeth which are so very characteristic as a geological feature in the coastal plain of Mexico. At that time only the first wells around Ebano had been drilled, and drilled under the direction of Dr. Ordoñez himself. Only these Ebano wells were available for a real study of the condition of the occurrence of oil, the other large gushers not then being known. From that time on, the study of the geology of the country has, in large measure, been able to keep up with the oil development. As usual, a great deal of haphazard work in the exploration of the oil fields has been carried on. The results have been good, bad, and indifferent. We know a great deal more about the distribution of oil in Mexico than we do about the geology of it. Two ideas have become prevalent in regard to the Mexican oil, due to the peculiar development there: (1) That oil is omnipresent over a tremendous area bounded by De Soto La Marina, in the province of Tamaulipas, on the north, to south of Tuxpam in Veracruz; and (2) that there are very few spots in all this region which have rich gushers. The truth is somewhere between the two. The amount of land taken up, chiefly by three or four large companies, is extremely great, and covers all the possible chances. The idea that oil is going to be discovered in a large percentage of the land taken up by the oil companies, seems to me entirely unjustified. The amount of oil that will be produced from comparatively small spots here and there over that territory and other territory, undoubtedly will be very great. I do not think there is any hope of multiplying the capacity of these large gushers by the area of that part of Mexico in which they are contained, as a, large number of promoters are inclined to do.

The wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Coppcr Mining Co. in Butte, Mont, are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 1/2-in. rope. 5 main hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 6 shafts using 11/8-in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 11/8-in. rope. 15 shafts using 1-in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8-in. rope. 1 shaft using 3/4-in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines wing 5/8-in, 3/4-in., 7/8-in., and 1-in. (15.9, 10, 22, and 25 mm) rope. THe flat ropes run from 1/2 by 71/2 in. (12.7 by 1905 mm.) to-3/8 by 4 1/2-in (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting engines, which arc set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties ill operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes. In general, the practice in Butte is to use hoisting engines equipped with 12-ft. (3 7 m.) cast-iron drums, smooth faced, for 11/2-in. rope and 6-ft. cast-iron drums, smooth faced, lagged with 3/8-in. steel plate for 11/4 l1/8 and 1-in. The aim of this paper is the description of a technique to be applied to the study of sections of metal powder particles, less than 20 microns in diam. with the electron microscope, by the replica method, using for replica a material such as formvar or parlodion. This work originated with the study of particles of tungsten powders. Such particles were too small to be examined in sufficient detail with the light microscope. On the other hand, examination with the electron microscope of the powders dispersed in the supporting film was not found satisfactory because: 1. It did not permit differentiating between single particles and aggregates. 2. It did not show the true outlines of the particles but only the projection of a whole surface. 3. No details appeared. For that reason it was attempted to make replicas of sections of the particles imbedded in a mounting material suitable for polishing and etching. The method proved satisfactory for the examination of tungsten powder and was then extended to car-bonyl nickel and carbonyl iron powders. The method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.' With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. The Crushing Device The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1 in. dia. by 36 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 1/2-in. dia. by % in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of -the chamber. THE hardenability concept has become widely used during the last few years for the choice and substitution of steels. Before the work of Grossmann,1 the systems for predicting hardenability from chemical composition could be used only over a narrow range of composition. Grossmann introduced a comprehensive system, which has been effective in calculating the hardenability of most types of moderate or low-alloy steels. However, occasions .often arise that require the calculation of the hardenability of high-alloy steels from their chemical compositions. Experimental determinations of the hardenabilities of such steels indicate that the Grossmann system predicts much greater hardenabilities than are realized. The fact that cases do arise in which the Grossmann method does not, apply indicates that the fundamental hypothesis of the system may not be generally applicable. It seems advisable to re-examine not only Grossmann's system but also the concept of hardenability itself. HARDENABILITY If steel parts are to possess a martensitic structure after quenching, they must first be austenitized and then cooled through the pearlite and bainite transformation ranges sufficiently rapidly to avoid the formation of pearlite, bainite, and proeutectoid products.* If, on cooling, these transformations are avoided, the resulting structure can consist only of martensite (and retained austenite). The hardenability of a steel is measured in terms of the severity of the cooling conditions necessary to avoid the pearlite and bainite transformations. The less rapid is the cooling necessary to prevent the formation of bainite and pearlite, the higher is the hardenability. The pearlite and bainite reactions appear to be differently affected by the alloying elements. Not only is this indicated by the published isothermal transformation data, but recent work by Zener2 affords a rational interpretation of the differing effects of the alloying elements. Manganese,3 for example, appears to decrease the rates of the pearlite and bainite transformations by equal percentages, while molybdenum4,5 is approximately 10,000 times more effective in retarding the pearlite than in retarding the bainite transformation, on the basis of isothermal measurements. THE purpose of this paper is to start a discussion on: (1) methods of supporting the immediate roof, particularly of local areas of poor roof, during the mechanical loading of coal; (2) methods of increasing the rapidity of the movement of the mining faces so that, without the use of cribs, jacks, pack walls, and filling, there will be no danger to men, equipment,, and working places from the subsidence of the overlying strata. In the Pittsburgh district the application of mechanical loading devices in mines working in the Pittsburgh seam, has been retarded by the difficulties of holding and handling the draw slate. Normally the thickness of this slate averages about 8 in. but the hardness varies, and a cut of coal cannot always be loaded without placing posts or crossbars to support the slate. Locally, the slate may be thicker and special methods of support may be required. If crossbars are placed to hold the slate when the coal averages 5 ft. in thickness, the standard methods of transporting the coal cannot be followed, and the use of conveyors may be desirable. Very little information is available on the effect of increasing the rate of movement of advancing or retreating break lines or longwall faces. A few British publications have presented some data but all such data relate to longwall faces that have moved not more than 6 ft. a day. The most rapid rate of movement of longwall faces in Germany is 6 ft. per day. In the ordinary hand-loading mine in western Pennsylvania break lines on full retreat will move about 2 ft. per day. If loading machines are used under similar conditions the, rate of retreat may reach 4 ft. per day. In a mine where coal is loaded by hand on conveyors three shifts per day, the rate of retreat has ranged from 11 to 16 ft. per day, with an average of 13 ft. If mobile loading machines could be used to load on con-veyors on break lines, the rate of retreat should be increased substantially.

It is a well known fact that age-hardening alloys remain in a supersaturated, or partially supersaturated, condition only for limited periods of time at temperatures below the solvus. In order to develop optimum properties by subjecting the quenched alloy to precipitation or age-hardening treatment at a specified temperature, it is necessary that the cooling rate be sufficiently high to maintain the required degree of supersaturation of the solid solution. In practical applications the size and shape of the specimens obviously have considerable influence on the rate of cooling and there is need for more information on the effects of various rates of cooling. Cooling rates of quenched aluminum alloys generally have been established by the type of quenching medium, the temperature of the medium and the dimensions of the specimen. Except for the work of Roth3 little quantitative information is available on the measurement of cooling rates of aluminum alloys and the significance of the influence of various cooling rates upon the mechanical properties. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the use of the Jominy test for aluminum alloys (Table I). The material for this investigation consisted of extruded rods 1 1/4 to 136 in. in diam. The chemical compositions were as follows: The modified L-type Jominy specimen with dimensions shown in Fig I was selected as the most convenient means for obtaining a wide range of cooling rates. The standard Jominy specimen was not satisfactory because its cooling rate was not sufficiently high. The four flat surfaces machined at right angles along the length of the L-type specimen to a depth of 0.015 in. facilitated the hardness measurements. The specimens were machined from the extruded stock with no intermediate forging. New specimens were used for each aging experiment. The specimens were given solution treatments of 2 hr duration at recommended temperatures in a Hoskins furnace (Table 2). The temperature of the furnace was maintained constant to 3°C. No protective atmosphere was necessary because the thin film of oxide that formed on the surface of the specimens had no effect on the hardness measurements. AT

A balanced system of internal stress is set up in any metallic structure by plastic deformation below the annealing temperature. The internaI stress induced by cold rolling or other fabricating processes is generally recognized and its magnitude is known to be, within certain limits, a function of the degree of cold deformation. The plastic deformation that may accompany rapid cooling from elevated temperatures may not materially change the form of the product. The internal stresses so induced are not, therefore, so evident and nonrecognition of their presence has at times led to engineering failures. The heat treatment of aluminum alloys is a relatively new art and little information is available regarding the magnitude of stresses induced during the commercial heat treatment of aluminum alloy products. As the industrial use of aluminum increases, it is inevitable that products of increasingly large volume will be required. It has become necessary in the present commercial utilization of aluminum to heat-treat castings and forgings weighing hundreds of pounds. One of the factors governing the magnitude of internal stresses arising from rapid cooling from elevated temperatures is that of the size of the structure being treated. Some of the other factors are: cooling rate, elastic properties of the alloy, thermal expansivity, thermal conductivity, and the presence or absence of phase changes. Practically all aluminum alloys have a high coefficient of thermal expansion and some are capable of developing relatively high elastic limits. On the other hand, all commercial aluminum alloys have relatively high thermal conductivities, no invariant phase changes, and the quenching temperatures are comparatively low. EACH branch of engineering seems to depend on the cooperation and contribution of some other branches to enable it to produce more efficient methods and appliances for man to use. The purpose of this paper is to show approximately the gain in efficiency of self-propelled merchant ships when steel of greater elasticity is substituted for mild steel in some of the strength members and alu-minum alloy is substituted in some of the parts where strength is not essential. The new steel will have some greater strength and a much greater elastic limit in the as-rolled condition, and must be readily weld-able under ordinary conditions of shipbuilding. Naturally, its cost may be more than mild steel, but if the demand is great that excess cost may be reduced to an amount that will make its use more economical than that of the present mild steel. There appears to be a well defined axiom in engineering today that to use the least power to carry a given load the weight of the carrier must be reduced to a minimum. This minimum must be, of course, consistent with the necessary strength, rigidity and durability and it must not be attained at an excessive cost where the fixed charges of the carrier will exceed the savings in, operating the motive power. Recent railroad equipment is a notable example of this, and in these trains alloy steels and aluminum together with less weight per horsepower of the power plant are reducing the weight of the carrier and hence the total power required for moving the paying load. Before considering the application of these metals to shipbuilding, it is well to explain some of the fundamentals of ship design.

THE third year of Government exploration for potash by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the authorization of the act approved June 25, 1926 (Public 424-69th Cong.) is drawing to a close. The results thus far obtained are thought to be sufficiently interesting and satisfactory to justify the presentation of a brief preliminary account of the work. Review of Earlier Exploration The general geologic similarity of the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico to the potash field of Germany had long ago suggested the possibility of the presence of potash salts somewhere in that basin, but petroleum exploration was then making little headway there and the necessary data could not be obtained. The discovery by Udden in 1912 of potash in brine from the Spur well in Dickens County, Texas, was the first direct evidence of its presence. In 1915-17 the U. S. Geological Survey drilled a test well with standard tools at Cliffside near Amarillo, but failed to find potash. Nevertheless, an observer has been kept in the field, at first in cooperation with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology but since 1922 by the Survey alone, to secure data and samples from oil and gas tests. Since the discovery of oil in Reagan County in 1923 exploration by drilling has been rapidly extended to many parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The identification of the potash-bearing mineral polyhalite was first announced by the Geological Survey in June, 1921, the material having come from cuttings from the Bryant well in Midland County and the Burns well in Dawson County, Texas. Successive discoveries and announcements of similar purport aroused widespread interest in potash exploration, which culminated in the action by Congress already noted. The classification here used is one of convenience only; it is not intended to include all known types of ore deposits. The characteristic features of the several well-marked types of primary mineralizations are described without reference to the ultimate source of their metals. The minerals of many deposits of obscure origin were probably introduced through fissures that are now healed, or are due to the migration of metals from such deposits. [ ] It is not within the scope of this book to enter into a general discussion of the genesis of ore deposits but, in view of the progress being made in our comprehension of the conditions under which ore deposits were formed, mention should be made of recent work. J. E. Spurr's two volumes, "The Ore Magmas," are recommended as crystallizing the views of those who are inclined to ascribe the origin of most ore deposits to a differential precipitation from magmatic rock masses and to the migration and precipitation of the viscous, liquid or gaseous exhalations from those masses. IN plants casting electric-furnace ingots and converting them immediately into blooms, billets, slabs, bars or forgings, the criterion of quality performance is the soundness of the semifinished or finished product. When rejections are necessary, it is not always obvious whether the defects were caused by an unsound ingot or by improper treatment during the heating and forming operations. To evaluate the effects of the numerous factors involved, it is necessary to accumulate a large number of detailed observations and to analyze and interpret these data properly. Even after a thorough investigation has been conducted, it is impossible, in some cases, to isolate the cause of the defect and say that it is definitely the result of an unsound condition in the ingot or mistreatment of the ingot during further processing. Two factors that are extremely difficult to evaluate are the chemical composition of the steel and time from finish pour to charge in the soaking pits or "track time," and it is necessary to evaluate their combined effects before many other factors can be studied. Plain carbon, fine-grained steel in the range of 0.18 to 0.23 pct carbon, is very susceptible to cracking and the longer the elapsed time between the pouring of the ingots and stripping for charging into the soaking pits, the higher the billet rejections for cracks are found to be. Ed¬munds, Anderson and Waring are to be commended for their excellent work in so painstakingly reducing to constants, the variables believed to be associated with these types of stress corrosion. An ammonia stress-cracking apparatus similar in many respects to the one described has been assembled. Certain aspects of its construction may be of interest. Tensile loading of the specimens, which are usually Y8-in. diameter wires, is accomplished by springs acting in compression in compact, portable, tubular assemblies weighing less than 10 lb. The lower end of each assembly contains the test specimen and is passed into the test chamber for exposure to the moist ammoniacal atmosphere. There is considerable convenience in being able to load the specimens in a portable unit, which may be warmed to prevent condensation, and then thrust instantaneously into the test chamber. Spring loading obviates the use of weights, but it has the disadvantage of allowing some relaxation of the load if the specimen elongates during corrosion. The maximum loss in load found so far was 20 per cent. The air supplied to the test chamber is humidified by passing it through thermo¬statically controlled water. The air is dispersed into fine bubbles by being forced through a porous ceramic filter at the bottom of a tank containing about 10 liters of water. The list of our past-Presidents comprises the names of many who, in their official addresses, have sketched the current progress of the arts and professions with which they were familiar. Such addresses are, in my judgment, highly useful, setting forth the results of our own work as a society, and recalling to our minds the particular lines in which discussion would prove most fruitful. Following this course with some hesitation, I venture to offer an outline of the recent improvements and the present situation in mining and metallurgy in the Western United States. The wonderful advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity have all combined to aid these arts to such an extent that progress during the last decade has undeniably been more rapid than ever before in the history of the profession. In all mining countries improved transportation-facilities, in many instances called into existence by the traffic created by the mines themselves, have done much to enlarge the field of operations by the reduction of freight-, operating- and living-expenses, thereby bringing lower-grade properties into the producing class. Under normal conditions, as the age of a district increases, all these different factors should combine to off-set the augmented costs attendant on deep mining, and greatly tend to prolong the profitable life of the mines. The more recent and important improvements in our Western mining-practice which have contributed most towards the advancement of the art may be briefly summarized as follows; but, before beginning this portion of my address, I wish to thank most heartily the many engineering friends who have so

A good place to look for elephants is in elephant country, and old mining districts are certainly elephant country as far as minerals are concerned. In many areas probably more ore is still in the ground than has been taken out. The old timers were good miners and hard workers and when they left ore behind, it was usually for good reason; but many an old mining district has been revived by new approaches to old problems, taking advantage of new techniques and new equipment. One of these is the Front Range mineral belt of Colorado, which has produced minerals for the past 100 years through the ups and downs of mineral prices and the general economy. Gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc have been found in abundance in the complex sulfide veins of the area. Between Idaho Springs and Central City lie several strong veins which have been mined successfully in the past. The two strongest of these veins, striking northeast-southwest, (Lake-Bald Eagle), and northwest-southeast, (Crown Point-Belman) , and dipping northeast and northwest, respectively, intersect in a flat X near the head of Virginia Canyon. From the lowest drainage of the area, Clear Creek Canyon, the old timers drove the Central, or Big Five, haulage-drainage tunnel due north. It intersects the two veins 8460 ft from the portal and 1670 ft below the surface. The two veins were mined successfully at the surface and at the tunnel level. Without an opening to the surface at the in- side end of the tunnel, ventilating became very difficult as the stopes were opened up, and mining ceased in 1929. Vertically, 1200 to 1600 ft of virgin ground remains in the veins.

MARCH 31, 1922, undoubtedly will be long remembered as the ending of an important epoch in the coal-mining industry. On that date, contracts fixing the wages and terms of employ-ment at all anthracite mines and at approximately 60 per cent. of the bituminous mines of the country expired. For the past two years, the consuming public has been complaining bitterly against continued high cost of coal. Coal operators employing union labor have felt obligated to carry out contracts entered -into under the direction of the Bituminous Wage Commission appointed by President Wilson, and in order to do this, they have sacrificed millions of tons of business to non-union mines, and millions of dollars in wages that would have been distributed throughout unionized districts have been diverted to the non-union miners, many of whom never obtained the peak wages granted by the Bituminous Commission and others of whom accepted reductions early in 1921. Heretofore, wage contracts have overlapped as to expiration dates in different districts and renewals have had to take into consideration the competitive balance; the present situation is unique in that practi-cally every contract in the country expired on March 31, and the questions now confronting those responsible for the operation. of the coal mines of the country are: 1. Shall the operators that have heretofore employed union labor endeavor to continue contractual relations with United Mine Workers of America? 2. Shall they undertake to operate their mines with non-union labor? 3. Shall they encourage and endeavor to work out some plan of regulation or arbitration by a Government commission such as President Roosevelt appointed to settle the anthracite strike in 1902? 4. Shall the country give consideration to the demand of the miners that the coal-mining industry be "nationalized?"
