TheRe is still considerable controversy as to the exact nature of the mechanism of the age-hardening process, in spite of the many experiments already performed. For this reason, a considerable number of typical systems should be examined in detail and their results correlated. Furthermore, the methods of studying the changes that take place during the progress of this phenomenon should be carefully scrutinized and the different methods applied to the same samples, preferably at the same time. The experiments described in this paper are presented to supply information on one age-hardening system and to show how the various methods of investigation compare in their indication of what has happened. In brief, the progress of aging in magnesium alloys containing about 10 per cent by weight of aluminum at different temperatures was followed by measurements of hardness, electrical resistivity, dilation and lattice parameter, and by microscopic observation. Previous Work Meissnerl,$ Archer?, and Gann3 have investigated the changes in mechanical properties of magnesium-aluminum alloys during aging and have shown the optimum condition for the age-hardening treatment. Meissner's results are particularly interesting because when replotted so that they represent hardness as a function of aging time, the curves of 125" and 150" C. show two hardness peaks. This result was not confirmed in the present work. Schmid and Siebe14 have reported an investigation that is similar to the present one but it was not published until the present work had

Nonmetallic rock and mineral products are so diversified that any generalizations regarding the industries based upon them are of doubtful value and can be misleading. They are geared to every phase of the national economy and respond sensitively and immediately to any economic change, but the responses vary with the individual products. They are also affected by political and competitive factors to a degree that is disconcerting and, at times, ruinous to operators, owners, and stockholders of mineral properties. It is not unusual to find these special factors functioning in reverse of general trends insofar as individual products are concerned. As this summary is being written in the final weeks of 1949 production statistics for the year are not complete, but it is obvious that few, if any, new production records will be set, and that 1949 level, will, in general, be lower than those of 1948. The decline in output is not alarming and reflects in large part the tendency of users, who have been finding sources of supply more dependable to rely on prompt deliveries rather than on inventories to meet immediate needs. Except for the government's program of stock piling which, insofar as it has worked at all, is of more direct interest and benefit to foreign than to domestic producers, industrial inventories have been further reduced, and the neater balance between production and consumption has freed capital for the manufacturer and has cut down the serious hazard of substantial inventory losses. There are no quantity products and only a few special products that cannot be supplied in quick response to current demands. Normal development of a few nonmetallic industries has been retarded by the government's unpredictable application and irrational interpretation of antitrust laws, and by extension of preferential tariffs to new countries and new products. Synthesis is likewise a potent threat. in certain fields, but otherwise it is difficult to make a review of 1949 read much differently from a review of 1948. Changes have been qualitative rather than quantitative, except for a few operations that have been pinched out by the relentless competition that characterizes many of the industrial mineral industries.

Book Review MEXICO UNDER CARRANZA. By Thomas E. Gibbon, Los Angeles, California. Doubleday Page and Co., New York, 1919, 270 pp., 711/2 X 5 in. $1.50. A vivid, accurate, convincing summing up of the Mexican problem as it confronts us today, devoid of sensationalism or bigotry. A compelling narrative of the relations of the Carranza Government and our own from Oct. 15, 1915, when it was recognized as the de facto government of Mexico, to the present time. It shows the absolute lack of promises kept or lived up to either with its own people or the United States. This is not done by invective or the indiscriminate use of adjectives but by quoting from the instruments on record on both sides of the case. The driving of the Red Cross out of Mexico, which condemned many of the native peons to starvation, and the interference with the Pershing Punitive Expedition are merely mentioned, but the crying crime against the Mexican people, who have sunk to unbelievable depths of misery obscured, but not exceeded, by the sufferings in Europe, is held up in a clarified light. Two illuminating chapters are devoted to the character and treatment of foreign investments in Mexico, Which are a complete refutation of the common statement that Mexico has been exploited remorselessly by the foreign investor. The conces-sions given by Diaz in the days of his regime most condemned are nowise as large nor the land grants as extensive nor the title so absolute as those granted to the railroad builders of our own transcontinental systems and other of our nationally subsidized works. This is not left to further argument but is settled by quoting the various official instruments and not at all in a tedious way. The author's concluding chapter is a picture of the Mexican people from Aztec times, when they had reached a civilization which gave them a better calendar than the Roman Empire ever had until modern times, to their present unhappy and pitiful condition. He concludes, basing his findings on parallel historical downfalls of a once proud people, that present conditions are the natural result of the absolute domination of an alien minority. He grants, of course, that there are many estimable Latin-Mexicans of integrity, ability and charm, but maintains that the dominant minority has continually degraded in fulfillment of the sociological law that the sure revenge of the servile class is found in the corruption of the master class. The book is replete with historical and literary allusions which, added to the pleasing style of the accomplished author, make fascinating the account of one of the world's great tragedies. Mr. Gibbon is a lawyer who has spent much time in Mexico and shows an understanding of the native people not shared by all writers on the Mexican problem. A distinct addition to all literature on the subject. P. E. B.

Pure metallic tantalum, from a practical standpoint, is one of the newer developments in the metal field. Although it was used as filament in incandescent lamps in 1906, only within the last, five years has the metal been available in sufficient quantity and suitable form for more general application. In addition to corrosion-resisting properties and high melting point, the metal has an ability to withstand unusual amounts of cold working. It affords some striking demonstrations of block movement during plastic flow. Strength and Ductility of Tantalum Since there is no good way of defining working properties numerically, illustrations will be used. It is possible to roll a bar of pure tantalum 0.4 in. thick to sheet 0.001 in. thick, without heating or annealing. The sheet produced will be sound and may be bent upon itself at right angles to the direction of rolling. Longitudinally the sheet will be somewhat brittle. A disk of annealed metal may be cupped and drawn to the form of a capsule 3/16 in. dia. by 146 1? in. long. If carefully handled this capsule can be further deformed by drawing to a tube having an outside diameter of 0.050 in. Disks of tantalum may be spun into tubes of 39 in. dia. and 1½ in. long. In the form of rod, reductions may be made from 0.4 in. to 0.001 dia. In the latter process, it is necessary to heat the wire four or five times to 500" C., at intervals between 0.040 and 0.001 in. Although the melting point of tantalum is 2850" C., these heatings at 500" C. are sufficient to distinctly anneal it. Published figures on the strength and ductility of tantalum are not particularly accurate. This is due to the fact that these properties vary widely, depending on the extent to which the metal is contaminated by gas. There are no sharp critical points in these changes with gas content; samples of metal will vary from a springy or actually brittle condition to one of leadlike softness. Samples that have had a prolonged heating at high temperatures in a good vacuum, under conditions such as would be provided in vacuum-tube experimentation, will yield a product of about the hardness of annealed copper. The usual commercial metal will have the hardness of annealed mild steel.

The varying physical character and large extent of the Broken Hill lode necessarily involve the employment of a variety of underground methods. The lode had its origin in an extensive fault plane traversing metamorphosed schists conformably, as a rule, with their beds of stratification. The underground waters carrying minerals in solution deposited their contents. in the original cavities formed by the faulting action, and in the enlargements of these cavities due to dynamic forces brought to bear on the rocks, more especially on the hanging-wall side of the fault, This deposition was supplemented by metasomatic replacement of a portion of the original rock contents by the argentiferous sulphides of lead and zinc which form the staple products of the district. Although the orebody is practically continuous throughout the mines, its width varies greatly, ranging from a few feet to about 350 ft. The widest portions occur in conjunction with huge folds in the inclosing country rock, almost exclusively on the hanging-wall side. The ore it these folds pitches to the south in the southern half of the field, and to the north in the northern half; there are, however, undulations in these ore channels evidently due to compression of the rocks in the direction of the channels. In the earlier days, before the orebodies had been opened up: vertical cross-sections across these bulges in the hanging wall gave the lode the appearance of the "saddle formation," so well exemplified at Bendigo in Victoria; but subsequent development of the ore channels ha; long since proved that the formations in the two districts are entirely different. The depth reached by the zone of complete oxidation of the sulphide, varies from about 250 to 550 ft. from the original outcrop while partial oxidation extends in places below the 1,000-ft. level. The result of oxidizing influences has been the production of ore of every grade of cohesiveness, from that of dry sand to that of hard compact rock.

The occurrellce of such a large amount of gold in the Hart-eel granite, even though the surmised existence of similar areas is not new, brings freshly to mind the pegmatite type of mag-matic differentiation lately brought again to attention by occurrences at Silver Peak, Nev., described by Spurr; and in Alaska, described by both Spurr and Brooks. In both localities granitic rocks or dikes are thought to pass into metalliferous quartz-veins. An interesting association in this connection is the occurrence of diamonds in residual pegmatitic clay of Sail Juao de Chapado, Brazil, described by Derby :' (P. 142) "Bodies of pegmatite are quite common in the older rocks of Brazil, both in the diamond regions and elsewhere, occurring not only in the gneiss and granite, but in the schistose series as well. Those that have been examined are dike-like in their mode of occurrence and granitic in composition.'' (P. 143) '" The question of the eruptive or secretionary origin of pegmatites has long been a subject of discussion among geologists.... The recent studies .. seen] to have clearly established that most if not all of them are essentially eruptive masses, though possibly modified in some way by aqueous agencies. Even before becoming acquainted with the literature of the subject this view had seemed to me to be the only acceptable one as regards the typical pegmatites of Brazil." What is pegmatite ? J. F. Kemp says :2 "... veins or dikes—it is an open question which is the more correct term— are met formed of very coarsely crystalline aggregates of the same minerals that constitute granite. These are called pegmatite and in them is the home of graphic granite, the curious intergrowth of quartz and feldspar, such that a cross fracture of the blades of quartz suggests cuneiform characters.... In regard to the larger veins or dikes it seems improbable that true igneous fusion could have afforded such coarsely crystalline aggregates, and so we are forced to assume such abundance of steam and other vapors, i.e, mineralizers, as to almost, if not quite, imply solution."

It was not for the purpose of asserting any superior knowledge or authority, but simply of clearing up, in greater detail, some points casually mentioned in Mr. Scott's able paper, that the writer entered, some two years ago, into the discussion which that paper initiated. In such matters there is always room for differences of judgment, as well as for additional data, which may modify or complete the conclusions even of the best authorities. Those who are immersed in the duties of practical administration or work in the field, and who, being remote from the great scientific national libraries, are obliged to rely on their private collections, and to supplement them by their recollections of earlier studies, labor under special disadvantages in such a discussion; and it must be to the scientific and engineering world a matter for gratitude that Mr. Lyman has been willing to give the benefit of his advantages in this respect. Mr. Lyman would, however, doubtless at once disclaim the conclusion that his masterly summary constitutes " the last word " on this subject, and welcome further evidence, comment and criticism, such as the various contributors may continue to offer. This, therefore, is the motive, and must be the excuse, of the introduction by the writer of the following observations. The Miners' Dial.—Many years since, the writer employed a miners' dial, older in type than Fig. 12,* but without any attached spirit-level, made by Thomas Jones, a pupil of the great Ramsden. OPEN-HEARTH refractories are not merely an accessory to the furnace. They themselves ore the furnace, to all intents and purposes. The steel work of the main structure is merely a frame which helps to support the refractories; and the regenerators, a necessary part of the furnace system, consist almost entirely of refractories with very little supporting structure. Not only do refractories constitute the essential part of the furnace, but they also carry the liquid steel all the way to the point where it begins to solidify. On leaving the furnace the liquid passes through a refractory runner into a refractory-lined ladle, then through a refractory nozzle closed by a refractory stopper on the end of a refractory- protected rod. The liquid is sometimes sent through an additional refractory-lined tun-dish, a supplementary ladle, or a refractory runner for bottom pouring, until it finally enters the iron mold in which it solidifies. Even in the mold, refractory materials are sometimes used to provide a non-conducting "hot top." These materials, from ladle to hot top inclusive, are often referred to as the "pouring-pit refractories." CAUSES OF FAILURE Compared with the equipment used in most industrial processes the open-hearth furnace has a relatively short life. The most important quality of an open-hearth refractory, therefore, is its rate of failure. The discussion here of the individual refractory materials will therefore keep uppermost the question "Why, how, and where does it fail?" The principal causes of failure of open-hearth refractories are, in their order of importance: 1. Reaction with iron oxides. 2. Reaction with slag. 3. Flow and failure under load. 4. Melting. 5. HAVING been asked to talk about recent devel-opments in mining equipment, I chose the sub-ject of small units of storage-battery locomo-tives which recently have been developed with the idea of motorizing transportation in the mines as far as possible, replacing the manual labor of hand-tramming. Metal mines are probably less advanced in this field than coal mines, where transportation of large ton-nages on any one level is quite common. Of course, metal mines, where large tonnages are handled on any one level, are as advanced as coal mines, and storage-battery locomotives for main haulages are used quite commonly in such metal mines, but the mines having levels at many intervals in the depth of the orebody, or a number of intermediate levels in which a consider-able amount of hand-tramming has to be done, and small metal mines in which the size of the orebody does not seem to warrant the initial capital expenditure for the driving of main haulage levels and installation of rock and ore chutes and raises for the delivery of the broken ore and rock to the cars have been at consider-able disadvantage in replacing manual labor by some mechanical means of transportation. Several years ago the field was canvassed among the manufacturers of electric-locomotive equipment and the conclusion was reached that the art had not been devel-oped to the advantage of metal miners who desire to replace small units of labor by locomotive equipment. The need for such small locomotives is all the more em-phasized by the development in the past few years of mechanical mucking-machines (loading equipment for filling the cars from muck piles on the level). Any me-chanical loader is a liability instead of an asset unless means are also provided for keeping the material away from the loading-machines. Therefore the transporta-tion system must be equal to the capacity of a loading-machine, otherwise the latter is idle such a large per-centage of its time as to prove an unprofitable invest-ment. So there is a need for portable, small haulage units to handle small mine cars in many metal mines, and, naturally, units are desired which can be so readily shifted from level to level as to facilitate their free use. Of course, in mines in which each level comes to the shaft it is not such a difficult problem, but many mines have a great many intermediate levels which must be approached through raises, timber slides or other small openings required to transfer ore and to get timber and other supplies to those levels.

The cyanidation of precious-metal ores is a complex chemical process. Numerous reactions occur, some of which cause an undesired consumption of alkali and of cyanide. A knowledge of these reactions, their products, and the factors that influence the rates at which they proceed should be of value in working out the most economical conditions for cyanidation; but at present, much of this knowledge is lacking. This paper is confined to a study of some of the fundamentals of cyanidation. At the start of such an investigation it is necessary to simplify the problem under consideration by eliminating as many variables as possible. The results are then, of course, not immediately applicable to practice, but it is hoped in further work to round out the information and thereby make it of more practical value. For convenience in presentation, the paper has been divided into two parts, one devoted to a study of the reaction between cyanide and gold or silver, the other to a consideration of the factors that determine the rate of dissolution. I. REACTIONS INVOLVED IN DISSOLUTION OF GOLD AND SILVER IN DILUTE CYANIDE SOLUTIONS Ever since the cyanide process for gold and silver extraction was introduced there has been discussion of the equation representing the reactions involved. In undertaking a detailed study of these factors, it was felt that the most logical first step was to determine, if possible, what reactions could theoretically take place when gold and sill-er are dissolved by dilute cyanide solutions. It is possible to determine whether or not a given reaction will theoretically take place by calculating the free energy of the reaction. This free-energy value for any given reaction is the algebraic sum of the free energies of formation of each of the reactants and products, and, if these values are known, the calculation is simple. (A chemical change always involves an energy change and the amount of energy change involved is the factor determining whether a given reaction will take place or how far it will go. This paper is not a treatise on the theory and practice of magnetic surveying. It presents a diagram upon which have been plotted observations taken with the simplest form of magnetic instrument, the lowly dip needle, over a large area astride the Lake Superior syncline of northern wisconsin. The exposures of the underlying formations are not sufficiently great in number nor fortunate in distribution to have provided the fuller understanding of the geology which has been secured by the use of the magnetic observations as an auxiliary tool or accessory in the hands of the geologist. The diagram (Fig. 2) in large part speaks for itself if studied in connection with the geological map (Fig. 1) for which it is the main control. It is presented to demonstrate the extent to which the use of such methods may aid in the solution of geological problems in a covered country. The diagram is probably unique in assembling the expression of such a wide range of formations, affected by so wide a range of secondary processes, and deformed by so many different structures in terms of magnetic variation. Few geologists outside of the Lake Superior country have had any first-hand experience in the taking of magnetic observations and the interpretation of the results in terms of geological conditions; nor have the Lake Superior men gone with the methods far afield from the mere tracing of iron formations. In more recent years the oil companies have gone heavily into investments in magnetometers, balances, and dip needles in the quest of concealed structural anomalies which are the favorable loci of petroleum accumulation. But these geophysicists come back from the fields with their collections of observations facing the question of interpreting the geological meaning of their magnetic anomalies. It is considered probable therefore, and certainly it is the hope of the writer, that the appended charts, or magnographs, which show how character of the country rock and its changes, structural strike and dip and their changes, depth of burial and its variation, contact metamorphic

THE effect of a tensile stress in accelerating the corrosion-cracking of certain alloys of aluminum, magnesium and iron is widely recognized. The literature is extensive and it is only necessary to cite the recent ASTM-AIME Symposium.1 There are, however, no experimental data conclusively showing the effect of an applied compressive stress. It has been inferred, from the generally accepted mechanism postulated for the acceleration of corrosion by an applied tensile stress, that a compressive stress would inhibit corrosion. Furthermore, it is observed that corrosion cracks invariably start on the tension side of a specimen bent as a simple beam. This observation has led to the suggestion that shot-peening of the surface would inhibit or eliminate stress-corrosion cracking in magnesium alloys, and aluminum alloys.3 However, the degree of inhibition produced by shot-peening does not appear in the literature except for the above qualitative references which are unsupported by experimental data. Moreover, while peening undoubtedly imposes a surface compressive stress, the alteration of the surface by the severe cold-working involved complicates the interpretation of the results with respect to the effect of a compressive stress alone. If corrosion proceeds along preferential paths produced by precipitation from solid solution, it is easily understood how a component of tensile stress normal to these paths will accelerate the corrosion and lead to ultimate failure. On the other hand, if the metallurgical conditions are such as to create preferential corrosion paths, then it is difficult to understand how a compressive stress, produced by shot-peening or any other method, can inhibit corrosion except in the sense that the accelerating factor is removed. Thus, if the basic corrosion mechanism remains unaltered, there should be little or no inhibition resulting from the application of a compressive stress if in¬hibition is defined as the reduction of the degree of corrosion below that experienced in the unstressed state. The experiment described below was performed to isolate and evaluate the effect of a compressive stress on the corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking of a high strength aluminum alloy (24-S); and, by a comparison of the corrosion rate of specimens subjected to an applied tensile stress, compressive stress and in the unstressed state, to clarify the role of stress in intergranular corrosion. Grain-growth and recrystallization characteristics of a commercially pure zirconium prepared by the iodide process are reported. Grain growth from 640° to 800°C was continuous once initiated and obeyed D = kt". Recrystallization of zirconium occurred at temperatures of 450° to 550°C after deformations of 20 and 50 pct. Hardening from partially soluble inclusions prevented determination of the absolute rates of recrystallization, but the relative rates of recrystallization obtained are useful as a guide in fabrication practice. BASIC information needed as a guide in the hot and cold working and annealing of metals includes recrystallization and grain-growth data. A search of the literature revealed no such information for pure zirconium. This is a report of practical grain-growth and recrystallization results obtained for a commercial grade of pure zirconium on a project sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. In this work, isothermal grain-growth curves were obtained at five temperatures from 640" to 800°C inclusively; while recrystallization curves have been determined at 450°, 500°, and 550°C for the metal at the deformation levels of 20 and 50 pct. In addition to the usual variables of temperature, time, and deformation, distribution of the second phase found in all commercial grades of iodide zirconium is also treated as an important factor in these grain-growth and recrystallization studies. In conducting this work, two properties of zirconium were particularly pertinent in dictating experimental conditions. First, since zirconium undergoes a transformation from the a close-packed hexagonal form to the ß body-centered cubic form at 862°C, no recrystallization or grain-growth studies were made above 800°C. Second, because dissolved gases (oxygen, nitrogen and/or hydrogen) increase the hardness and lower the ductility of the solid metal, all annealing treatments in this investigation were carried out in vacuum or in a helium atmosphere. Materials and Methods The zirconium used in this investigation was prepared by the Foote Mineral Co. by deposition from its iodide. A spectrochemical analysis of the metal showed the following composition in weight pct: Hf, 2.1; Mg, 0.012; Fe, 0.035; Si, 0.095; Ti, 0.023; Al, 0.037; Mo, trace; Ni, trace; Cr, trace; Ca, 0.006. Conventional metallographic procedures involving hand polishing on wet metallographic papers, followed by final polishing on fine, levigated alumina on gamal cloth and a medium speed wheel were used throughout this investigation. Grain boundaries were revealed with modified Tucker's etch containing 20 parts glycerine, 2 parts hydrofluoric acid, and one part nitric acid. Four portraits have recently been hung in the rooms of the Institute, in recognition of four illustrious men with whom we, as mining engineers and metallurgists, may claim fellowship. Luther. Martin Luther is often spoken of as a miner's son; but it is less generally known that John Luther, his father, was, in a small way, a metallurgist as well as a miner, and that Martin Luther himself, in his youth, worked in a forge or bloomary established by his father at Mansfeld, Saxony. Since this is the only manual occupation on his part of which we have ally record, it is fair to assume that the great scholar and reformer derived from his work in this department the practical familiarity with the conditions of human labor so abundantly evinced in the homely illustrations which accompany even his serious arguments, and in the witty apothegms of his famous " table-talk." At the same time, I must confess that I have not been able to find in any of the works of Luther distinct allusions to mining or metallurgy. Körner. Theodor Körner, a student at the Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony, threw himself into the German War of Freedom in the first decade of the 19th Century. He was a poet of no mean rank; and his " Song of the Sword " is one of the great lyrics of literature. This poem was written but a few days before he died in battle. In many respects, Körner may be compared with our American hero Theodore Winthrop, who similarly met a glorious fate, and left behind him prophetic indications of geniue, of which his premature death prevented the complete fulfillment. I am informed by a member of the Institute that Körner's admirable collection of minerals is still preserved at Dresden.

Discussion of the paper of JAMES H. HANCE, presented at the New York meeting, .February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 299 to 326. FREDERIC P. DEWEY, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*).-I wish to congratulate Professor Hance and to thank him for his extremely valuable addition to the fund of data upon this subject. It presents clearly conclusive and incontrovertible proof of the unreliability of drill samples of this class of metal for determining the value of such bullion. I am afraid, however, that his hope that some one in the mint service might continue such an investigation upon a more elaborate and exhaustive scale is, for the present at least, doomed to disappointment. As a practical matter, the mint service is not now particularly interested in segregation in crude bullion. So much trouble and friction arose, -both in the original purchase and in the transfer from one institution to another, in handling segregated bullion, that it became necessary to adopt drastic measures and now it is seldom attempted to determine the value of such bullion in the service. When bullion known or even suspected of being segregated is presented for purchase, it is at once strongly refined in the pot and the disturbing elements so far removed that concordant assays may certainly be obtained from the dip samples and a reasonably fair agreement obtained from drill samples. The mint service prefers that the owner should refine his bullion himself, but if he does not we will do it at his expense and return the slag to him when desired. Much work has been done in the mint service trying to arrive at the value of deposits of segregated bullion without strong refining. It was no unusual thing for such deposits to be melted three times at the purchasing office and to have 30 to 40 assays on the metal made before buying it. Yet when shipped to a mint it was found necessary to melt two or three times more and to make 15 to 25 assays before the mint would accept the bar, and there were considerable differences between the valuations of the two offices. In what was undoubtedly the worst case ever investigated, the purchasing office melted the deposit, 953 oz., three times, with a loss of 105.5 oz., and made 46 assays; the mint melted three times, with a loss of 6.6 oz., and made 28 assays. The mint allowed the purchasing office 1.178 oz. of fine gold more than the purchasing office claimed, while an extensive investigation of the mint samples by the Bureau, in which over 100 independent assays were made in various service laboratories, indicated that the metal carried 0.7 to 0.9 oz. more of fine gold than the mint allowed. A few years ago, gravel mining in the ancient river beds of Sierra county was the principal industry of the county. Operating drift mines were very numerous and many large hydraulic mines were in action. Eventually the State laws put an end to hydraulic mining, it being claimed that the silt carried down the streams to the valleys filled the rivers and caused winter floods, which were damaging to the surrounding farms. The ancient river deposits which could easily be found were, in the course of 40 years, worked out or practically so. The prohibition of hydraulic mining was a severe blow to the industry in general. The deposits were not developed and the gravel-mining industry practically stood still for many years. In Sierra county, nearly all the hydraulic mines were at the points where the ancient channels were exposed to view by reason of the modern stream erosion, or, in the miner's language, where the channels "enter" or "break out of" the ridges. The claims covering them also covered large areas in which were long segments of lava-capped channels, suitable for drift mines, and the points being hydraulicked were usually the controlling points of attack. Men who have followed hydraulic mining for any length of time seldom are content to work a drift mine. Knowing the great value of their deposits and feeling that they had been robbed by the State, these men have stubbornly held to their claims. The gold that is carried in these gravel channel deposits is more or less scattered throughout the depth and width of the deposit; the percentage that can be recovered by the process of drifting ranges from 50 to 75 per cent. of the total. In hydraulicking, practically all of the deposit is put through the sluices, and as the cost per cubic yard is only about 10 per cent. of the cost of drifting, the deposits, if classed as hydraulic mines, are much more valuable than if classed as drift mines; hence the old timers have held their claims (now worthless as hydraulic mines) at prices which the drift-mining industry could not stand; and such mines

ON May 19th, 1857, an English patent was granted to E. A. Cowper for heating air or other gases under pressure by means of a regenerator inclosed in an air-tight iron case, having between the regenerator and case a lining of brick. This patent provided for heating the stoves by a separate fireplace, or by gas direct from the blast furnace. A number of forms of interior arrangement of the brickwork are shown in the drawings; also hollow poppet valves with hollow stems, and a pipe inside of the stem for circulating the water; the valve seats have coil cast in them for water circulation to keep them cool; slide valves, with snake coil cast in the discs, are shown, and the use of cold air for cooling the valves is also described. The combustion-chamber of these stoves was central, and openings were provided at the top and bottom to get into the stoves. These Cowper stoves are all circular in section. November 10th, 1865, an English patent was granted to Thomas Whitwell for regenerative stoves for heating air or gas, provided with cleaning openings at the top and bottom capable of being closed with firebrick plugs and doors. The drawings show a rectangular stove inclosed in an iron case. The interior brickwork has numerous up-and-down passages through the stove, but there is no claim on the interior construction. March 3d, 1868, an English patent was granted to Charles Cochrane for a slide valve to be subjected to high heats. The disc of this valve was hollow, and had a circulation of water through it by the two hollow steins that operated it. The valve-seat was detachable and had a coil cast in it, through which water circulated. The valve and seat were placed on an incline to the body to cause the valve-disc to lie on the valve-seat. A cap was placed on the bottom of the body to get at the interior readily. January 5th, 1870, an English patent was granted to Siemens, Cowper and Cochrane for the construction of regenerators in fire-brick stoves, with numerous vertical passages of sufficient size to allow a brush to pass through and clean them. These passages had slight projections on the sides to turn the air over and over as it passed through. Various phases of the embrittlement of solid copper containing oxygen by the action of reducing gases at high temperatures are familiar to readers of metallurgical literature through the work of many experimenters. In 1900, Heynl recorded observations of copper being heated in hydrogen with the development of fine cracks, the result of the formation of steam within the metal through the action of hydrogen on the copper oxide usually found in copper. Archbutt,2 in 1905, published the results of experiments, showing that all oxygen can be removed from copper by heating to redness, for several hours, in hydrogen. Intercrystalline cracks and extreme brittle-ness developed. Archbutt attributed the brittleness to the reduction of oxides present in the copper. Bengough and Hil1,3 in 1910, encountered the now well-known embrittlement at the outset of their investigation and stated in their paper: It soon became evident that the effect of any heat treatment depended largely on the presence or absence of reducing gases in the atmosphere of the furnace, as well as on its temperature. Hence it became necessary to adopt a somewhat elaborate scheme of heat treatment. The authors found embrittlement in separate experiments due to both hydrogen and carbon monoxide and concluded that: "The gases ruin the alloys after being heated to about 650" C. in their presence." Ruder,4 in 1916, reported the results of a series of experiments made by heating commercial and deoxidized copper in hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and steam. In agreement with other writers, he found that copper containing oxygen was made brittle by reducing gases, while the deoxidized metal remained unaffected. In the case of

In the establishment of the relationship between weldability and hardenability, two methods have been employed in correcting for the grain growth produced in the heat-affected zone: first, the hardenability calculated from chemical composition* may be corrected to the grain size observed in an actual weld? or, second, a hardenability test may be made on the steel quenched from a temperature high enough to produce a grain size comparable to that found in the heat-affected zone.8 In order to obtain grain sizes in the end-quench hardenability bar comparable to those resulting in the base metal from the welding cycle, a quenching temperature of 2Ioo°F. has been used. In studies of the end-quench hardenability specimen quenched from 2Ioo°F. instead of from a lower temperature of I7OO°F., it is impor-TaiiT to ascertain The relative cooling rates for various distances along the bar. It is a question as to whether the cooling occurs at the same rate or whether there is any significant difference from the standard cooling-rate curve published by Jominy and confirmed by others.4,5 This paper reports experimental evidence concerning the effect of quenching temperature on the cooling rates in the end-quench hardenability test. The effect of quenching temperatures on cooling rates has been studied by a number of investigators.6'7 French has considered this effect from both theoretical and experimental aspects. In French's studies on complete quenching of spheres and rounds, an increase in the quenching temperature caused an increase in the cooling rate at 720°C. at the center of the specimen. The center cooling velocity also has been shown to be dependent upon the surface per unit volume for the type of specimens studied; the velocity of cooling increases with an increase in the surface per unit volume. Three methods of indicating the rapidity of cooling of a body of metal during a quenching operation have been propped: I. The time it takes for the metal to cool from the quenching temperature to a temperature halfway between the quenching temperature and the temperature of the quenching medium (half-temperature time): Grossmann, Asimow and Urban7 justify the use of this criterion by the fact that the half-temperature time includes the temperature and time of incubation as well as the zone of formation of pearlite and, further, the data so derived accord very closely with experimental values. 2. Coal preparation men today are confronted with problems brought about by changing feed characteristics. The size consist of the coal going to preparation plants has been getting finer and finer. In order to handle these sizes economically, operators are turning to Notation. American Cyanamid Co., in an effort to enable coal flotation plants to produce efficiently at maximum quality and capacity, wnducted experiments which demonstrated that synthetic flocculants are useful for increasing the capacity of coal and refuse filters and for clarifying coal and refuse slurries, and a wetting agent is beneficial in reducing the moisture content of filter cake. Coal preparation men are today confronted with problems brought about by the changing coal markets, changing feed characteristics, and ever increasing labor and supply costs. Small mines are finding it difficult to exist, and the larger mines are rapidly converting to fully mechanized and automated operation to survive. The size consist of the coal going to preparation plants has been getting finer and finer, and the problems facing the preparation plant personnel are growing larger and larger. Facilities can be provided to handle this plant feed in new plants, but the problems are generally not so simple in existing plants where equipment must often be used to perform tasks far beyond its rated capacity. In addition, various state conservation departments, water commission boards, and other Federal and state agencies are endeavoring to eliminate stream pollution. These problems, and many more not mentioned, have been forced on the preparation engineer for reasons of economy and the public interest. In the matter of stream pollution, a determined effort is being made by the coal industry to cooperate with the Federal, state, and local agencies. Economists predict it will be necessary to produce 600 million to 700 million tons of coal by 1970. Bear in mind that the greater proportion of this increased tonnage will have to be processed in existing plants, and you get an idea as to the problems facing the preparation engineer. Methods presently in use for preparing fine coal do an acceptable job down to 48 to 100 mesh. A very large percentage of the - 48 or -100 mesh fraction of the tonnage of coal produced now is being sent to settling ponds or sold at a low figure for reason of quality. This has caused operators to turn to flotation. Building settling ponds and impounding fines is a costly and, at times, impossible method of handling these sizes. Recently a number of flotation plants have been installed to beneficiate material finer than 48 mesh, and these plants have demonstrated that flotation can be successful and increase the plant realization. Coal is a low cost commodity and processes for its beneficiation must be low in cost. Flotation is such a process. It is easily adapted to handling fine coal, requires very little supervision when properly installed, and is economical to operate. Flotation separates coal from refuse and fine clay.
