Pacific Hydro, a leading renewable energy company from Australia, is developing a series of cascading run-of-river hydro electricity projects in the Cachapoal Valley at the base of the Andes Mountains some 100 km south of Santiago in Chile.These projects involve extensive tunnelling and underground works. The first of these projects is called Chacayes (110 MW installed capacity) and is now under construction with Astaldi SpA of Italy and Fe Grande of Chile as the EPC contractor. Astaldi SpA also has an equity stake in the project. It involves 6 km of tunnels between 5 m and 7 m diameter, of which 2.3 km is by tunnel boring machine (TBM) (5 m diameter).This paper outlines the local and regional geology, the scope of the Chacayes project, actual tunnel excavation rates and support, and compares the decision making on Chacayes between a choice of traditional drill and blast excavation versus TBM.The paper also outlines the next project planned to be developed by Pacifi c Hydro in the valley – the 140+MW Nido de Aguila project involving a main tunnel drive of 11 km with two intermediate adits, plus a 388 m shaft and underground powerhouse. The main tunnel drives are likely to be excavated by two hard rock TBMs (5 m diameter) but will need to be able to withstand high overburden pressures of up to 1300 m.Subsequent projects in the planning stages include the downstream Coya II project with two tunnels totalling approximately 10 km, one of which may be by TBM.

Three selected iron ore samples from the major bedded and channel iron deposits of Western Australia were analysed using a scratch test commonly used in the oil and gas industry. The portable commercial equipment dubbed Wombat cuts a groove on the surface of the sample with a cutter under imposed depth of cut and cutting velocity. The normal and tangential components of the force acting on the cutter are recorded with a high degree of precision (about 1N) at fine spatial resolution of about 20 measurements per millimeter.The intrinsic specific energy inferred from the scratch test measurements is found very well correlated with a classical measure of strength such as the uniaxial compressive strength, for over 300 sedimentary rock samples.The results obtained on the iron ore samples are comparable to those obtained on oil and gas sedimentary rocks. This method could provide an objective and semi-automated measurement of material strength and brittleness in iron ores that can possibly be correlated to the lump to fines ratio.

The Hall-Hoult process is likely to be the dominant method of aluminium production for the remainder of the century. The characteristics of the operation of a modern smelter are described and attention drawn to their disabilities which are due chiefly to the small production capacity of individual cells.The principal components of the Hall-H6roult cell - the electrolyte, the anode and the cathode - are discussed in order to identify the problems of scale-up. The factors influencing current efficiency and energy consumption are analysed and lead to the conclusion that the greatest potential for energy saving lies in reducing the anode to cathode distance (ACD).The most promising direction for major change is in the application of a new titanium diboride - carbon composite for coating of the surface of the cathode carbon. It improves the wetting of the carbon by aluminium and should permit the use of sloping cathodes and anodes. The deep metal pad would thereby be eliminated and, in the absence of magnetic perturbations, the ACD could be substantially decreased.The construction and testing of a full-size "Low Energy Cell" is scheduled for early 1986 and is expected to reduce energy consumption in aluminium production by about 15%.

G-Cell is a new design modification of the Imhoflot pneumatic flotation technology, which utilises a self-inducing aerator inside a downcomer, where bubble-particle attachment takes place. The present study has investigated the suitability of the G-Cell technology for cleaning fine coal using a 0.8 m diameter prototype unit at a coal preparation plant operating in the Midwestern United States. A slip-stream obtained from the overflow of raw coal cyclones operating in the plant, containing nominally minus 150 micron size particles and having ash content in the range of 40 per cent to 50 per cent and sulfur content in the range of 1.30 per cent to 1.50 per cent, has been used as the feed for the G-Cell. The performance data produced from the G-Cell tests are found to be very close to the ideal performance curves produced from release analysis. A statistically designed experimental program has been conducted to investigate the parametric effects on various key process responses, such as combustible recovery, product ash and sulfur rejection. The empirical models developed in this study have been utilised to identify a suitable experimental region for achieving a desired combination of response targets.

Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. In 1985 BMR assessed Australia's economic demonstrated resources of mineral sands as follows: rutile 8.0 Mt, ilmenite 41.4 Mt, zircon 11.5 Mt, and monazite 229 000 tonnes. These resources are located along the east coast of Australia, in the southwest corner of Western Australia, and in the Eneabba region, north of Perth, WA. However, over 40% of Australia's rutile and zircon resources, particularly those on the east coast, are presently not available for mining because of environmental considerations. As well, east coast ilmenite has been considered unsuitable for use by sulphate route pigment producers because of its relatively high chrome content. World demonstrated resources of rutile and zircon are estimated by BMR as 29 Mt and 38 Mt respectively. Demonstrated resources of ilmenite amount to about 1 billion tonnes. These occur predominantly in hard rock deposits in Norway, Canada, USSR and China, as well as alluvial deposits in Australia, South Africa and India. Quantitative data for world monazite resources is sparse. However, world production of rare earth oxides is now mainly from bastnaesite, a hard rock resource. Australia is presently the world's principal producer of rutile and zircon, and also provides a major share of the world's ilmenite. With the expected increase in Australia's rate of output of these commodities, combined with restrictions on mining along parts of the east coast, its position could diminish substantially over the next 25 years.

This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

Conditional simulation can be used to determine the probabilities of block iron-grades being above selected cut-offs. However, there are much faster alternatives that can produce acceptable results. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody is used as the basis of a case study to assess alternatives to simulation. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce data subsets. A complete distribution of iron grades for points or blocks is obtained utilising the data subsets and the following techniques: conditional simulation, median indicator kriging, the probability from conditional expectation and confidence intervals attached to the estimation of blocks in the framework of the discrete Gaussian model. The complete blasthole dataset is considered to represent the true iron grades at sample point support while the ordinary kriging estimate derived from these samples is considered to represent the true block grades. The distributions obtained from point estimates, block estimates and simulations are compared to each other and to the true estimates of iron grades using graphs and statistics. The conditional expectation technique reproduced the results obtained from conditional simulation extremely well and it is a viable alternative to simulation at point support. At block support the confidence intervals technique reproduced the results of the conditional simulation more closely than the median indicator kriging and in the data subsets tested the confidence intervals technique actually reproduced the true grade distribution more closely than the conditional simulation.

"This paper presents a case study demonstrating active geotechnical pit slope management at the now completed Carina Iron Ore Project operated by Mineral Resources Ltd (MRL). The site is located 105 km north-east of Southern Cross, Western Australia. The paper is primarily focused on the slope stability failure modes and the remedial measures employed to maintain mining.Between a quarter and a third of the excavated slopes were impacted by some form of instability that was beyond expectations of the intended slope design criteria and common practice. Ongoing mining was supported by intensive geotechnical pit slope management including close cooperation between geotechnical, mine planning and operations staff to achieve timely and practical mining solutions.Mining encountered varied slope failure mechanisms which required a combination of remedial solutions comprising: horizontal depressurisation holes, deferral of excavation, unloading, buttressing and catch berms.The root cause of the challenging slope performance was a mismatch between the predicted and encountered geotechnical model, resulting from a failure to recognise the critical mechanisms that control slope stability.Despite the extensive zones of instabilities at completion of mining, full ore recovery was achieved without major delays and in a controlled and safe manner.Citation:Fowler, M, Strang, D and Jaine, R, 2016. "Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. Iron ore sinter accounts for a large proportion of blast furnace ferrous burden in Chinese steel mills. Depleting high-grade iron ore resources and spreading complexity of iron ores in mineralogy and morphology have made it more difficult to utilise iron ores efficiently and economically. In this paper, the physical properties of iron ore particles were characterised using mechanical sieving, laser sizing and gas adsorption. From those measurements, two physical indices (fractal dimension of the particle size distribution and surface morphological factor) are defined as important variables for optimising the granulation performance of iron ores. The moisture capacity and the contact angle of iron ore particles with water were also measured to determine the strategy of water-feed in the granulation process. It can be concluded from the experimental results that an increase in the fractal dimension of the iron ore particles will lead to a better granulation performance, while an increase in moisture capacity with a range of 12.8 ~ 14.8 per cent would increase the optimum water content where the granule packed bed achieves its best permeability. Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.

Nowadays, one of the main problems in current flotation plants and new projects is the significant decrease in feed grades and changes in the mineral composition, which has an important effect on the mineral liberation and associations. Additionally, flotation plants usually operate with feed throughput higher than the original design, which has a significant impact on the feed particle size. All these conditions affect metallurgical performance, and must be evaluated and addressed, by improving control strategies for banks optimisation. For this purpose, the flotation of valuable minerals along the circuits requires better understanding, considering the compromise between performance and selectivity in flotation circuits. This paper presents a characterisation of the different minerals recovered along industrial flotation circuits. Plant sampling campaigns, performed in a copper industrial concentrator in Chile, provided the data for the study. Two rougher flotation banks consisting of cells of 130 m3 and 300 m3 were analysed. All the samples from the industrial surveys were analysed by screening and mineralogy, and the mineral recovery along the circuits was evaluated per particle size class, liberation class, type of associations, and others. Additionally, operating data on froth depth profiles complemented the evaluation of the mineral composition of concentrate streams, along the circuit. The results allowed for identifying and quantifying the main factors that affect the copper recovery and concentrate grade along the flotation banks. It was found that minerals with liberation lower than 50 per cent have a significant impact on the recovery. On the other hand, the decrease in the Cu grade in concentrates along the flotation circuits is mainly due to the relative increase of middling minerals (less liberated), non-valuable floatable minerals, such as free pyrite, and gangue entrainment. The characterisation of the gangue entrainment flow rate along the flotation banks showed a strong relationship with froth depth, which becomes more critical towards the last cells of the banks.

Blasthole cone samples are used for grade control in most of the iron ore mines of the Pilbara of Western Australia. This method of sampling is straightforward when the target sampling interval matches the mining bench height but is problematic when the blasted bench is 'flitch' mined in two or more passes. Crucially, the sampler needs to decide which part of the blast cone represents the upper and lower flitches to be mined. This sampling selection decision is usually made by assuming a certain proportion represents the subdrill component of a sampling face in a blasthole cone and the two flitches are split equally from the remaining portion. In this study of a West Australian channel iron deposit, sampling experiments were carried out to determine the actual proportions of a sampling face in a blasthole cone by spray painting the blast cones at flitch and subdrill boundaries during the drilling process. Measurements were then taken to assess the differences between assumed sampling face proportions and actual proportions. A set of paired samples was also collected from a number of blastholes with one set using the assumed proportions of each flitch for each sample, while the other set sampled the actual proportions, which were identified from the cone painting process.

SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators possess excellent mineral processing ability and have been widely applied to process oxidised iron ores. SLon centrifugal separators are applied to clean the SLon magnetic concentrate and remove quartz and other gangue minerals associated with a small portion of magnetite.This paper introduces the application of this technology in Hai Nan, Da Hong Shan and An Shan for processing oxidised iron ores.

Miners and mineral explorers are concerned at the increasingly hostile environment being generated towards their industry and their profession. There is little official or public recognition that the mining industry is essential for the maintenance of the country's standard of living; a large part of this hostile feeling is caused by the assumption that mining destroys large tracts of our attractive countryside. This paper presents a historic review of the impact on the countryside of the major land using groups commencing with the Polynesian migration. European farming practices, subsequent expansion of the urban dweller and the land management practices of the two Government Departments, Lands and Survey and New Zealand Forest Service who between them control half of the total land area, are discussed. Estimates of total land area to date, directly and indirectly affected by mining have been calculated and a broad estimate of 18 000 ha or 1/1500 of total land area is indicated; current annual mineral production requires some 240 ha. These gross areas take no account of subsequent land rehabilitation, its improvement upon the original in some cases and the recreational, historic and aesthetic areas gained. Comparisons are then drawn with some current land practices in New Zealand.

VV Mineral (VVM) group of companies is the largest and the first private producer and exporter of beach sand mineral products in India. During 2010, the company produced and marketed around 750 000 tons of saleable products. Their operations are mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, India. Almost all the wet pre-concentration plants use sea water as the concentration medium, since there is no fresh water source available near the deposits. The mines are located along the south-east coast of India in the states of Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. The orebody varies in terms of mineral assemblage, slime content, grain size, and surface coating resulting in different behaviour of the minerals. Three different deposits containing ilmenite of different TiO2 content were studied. The study shows that there is no significant impact of using sea water for wet concentration prior to high tension separation of ilmenite. There is no significant variation in recovery and purity of ilmenite produced from these deposits when wet concentration of the deposits were carried out with sea water as the concentration medium and whether the concentrates were washed with fresh water or not before dry separation using High Tension Roll Separators (HTRS).

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. The main sulphides in the reef are pyrite and arsenopyrite, with gold occurring as microscopic particles in...

The optimal production of the metals needed by society is best achieved by a close synergy between concentrate production and smelting. For over 75 years commencing in 1923, such a close relationship was enjoyed between the Sullivan Mine in Kimberley, British Columbia and the Trail zinc-lead complex. An effective program of continual change and improvement at the Sullivan concentrator was achieved through a strong entrepreneurial spirit. This spirit was in part maintained through a favourable location in south-eastern British Columbia that resulted in a dynamic local community that has survived the closure of the mine. Innovations to be reviewed include feed forward reagent control, the use of column flotation to zinc and lead cleaning and the application of ultrafine grinding coupled with concentrate dewatering using hyperbaric filter technology.
