The need to recover metals from low grade deposits, old tailings, etc., combined with improvements in equipment design and the development of new extractants, has resulted in solvent extraction (SX) metal recovery reaching new importance (Webster & Ferron, 1993). The basic principle of solvent extraction is the use of an equilibrium system in which a metal ion is transferred from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, (Equation 1), (Ritcey, 1984). M + E ME . (1) The organic extractant (E) is usually specific for a certain metal ion (M) and forms a metal complex in the organic phase, leaving the impurities behind in the aqueous phase. To recover the metal, the equilibrium is reversed and the metal ion is transferred back from the organic to another aqueous phase in a process called stripping. The metal is then recovered from the aqueous strip solution, usually by electrowinning.

The only functional underground Coal Mine in Nigeria is located in Enugu in Anambra State. For some years now the mine has been beset with a perenial problem of flooding. This has hampered produc- tion and some time ago the mine was abandoned. Recently money and equipment were made available to reactivate the mine. Attempts are now made to increase production as it is very much below demand. However, there are problems as the mine is below the water table under some major rivers and any advance exposes men and equipment to water surge. The paper traces the different attempts made to dewater the mine and the problems encountered in producing coal in this mine.

The competitive coal market has required coal producers to put more effort into coal quality control. Successful quality control requires a good estimation of the in situ coal quality as well as a good estimation of the probable fluctuation of the in situ coal quality during production. Geostatistics offers a very promising way to meet this requirement. A geostatistical approach toward the coal quality control problem is presented. Two models, the prediction model and the conditional simulation model, have been developed for coal quality data from two large export coal mines in central Queensland, Australia. The mine planning and scheduling aspects based on this and other potential applications of the models are addressed.

Oyu Tolgoi is a large Cu-Au porphyry deposit in the south Gobi desert, Mongolia. The first of several deep, large-diameter, concrete-lined shafts, Shaft 1, is nearing completion. It will have a finished depth of 1380 m at a diameter of 6.7 m. These shafts will provide access to and hoisting capacity for block caving of deep underground ore. Geotechnical site investigations, and associated predictions of stability and ground support requirements, are compared against actual construction performance. Routine mapping is essential, along with checks against predictions and informing the contractor of ground conditions and variances.Advance rates are compared against predicted rock mass quality. A reasonable correlation exists between Qwall and advance rate. Overbreak and concrete liner thickness is related to the blockiness quotient, RQD/Jn.A ætool-bagÆ of just a few support elements (chain-link mesh, fibrecrete and 2.4 m long friction anchors and resin grouted re-bar bolts) was able to cope with the ground conditions encountered. QA/QC procedures are essential from the factory, through site storage to installation.

The model considers a range of design parameters and operating condit- ions and evaluates the significance of these in the ultimate design of a mine. It also considers organizational features associated with the mining method and examines the inter-dependence between operations. An important characteristic of the model is the use of both stochastic and deterministic methods to study the behaviour of the complete mining system. The simulator selects the appropriate unit operation, computes and records its time, performs it and then calculates the production and cost data. Output is in the form of shift, day, week or period repor-ts. These reports will indicate problem areas such as restrictions in the production network for a given set of conditions. The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in and areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

Increases in mining and production capacities can have a major impact on the productivity of a mining and production facility during the construction and commissioning period. With minimised production loss in mind, a multi-phase modular plant design was implemented on the Khumani Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The first phase involved a run-of-mine (ROM) crushing facility and the subsequent modular processing facility with capacity for 8.4 million tons per annum (Mt/a) product. An interim phase comprising modular additions to the processing facility increased capacity to 10 Mt/a product, with tie-ins occurring during maintenance periods. The second phase involves a second ROM crushing facility and modular additions to the processing facility, increasing capacity to 16 Mt/a product. This paper outlines the design considerations and limitations with modular design that need to be considered and shows how effectively construction and commissioning were implemented within shut-down and maintenance periods.

An important problem in rock engineering is to control the properties of artificial rock. A compaction technique for casting artificial rock specimens with controlled properties is described, i.e. using a compression-testing machine to compress the mixture. Uniform density is necessary to achieve uniformity of properties of the specimens, and uniform density can be obtained by using the specific pressing method presented. Rebound and borax content are important to the technique and have been studied as well.

Trials of different tapping operations at Olympic Dam have been carried out with the aim of improving the safety of tapping and improving the integrity and lifetime of the taphole. This has involved trialling the use of a mudgun and drill on one of the tapholes of the electric furnace in place of the normal manual tapping procedures. The blister copper tapholes are currently closed using a conical clay plug formed around a steel bar. The plug is pushed into the taphole by hand to stop the flow, and the cooling on the outer part of the taphole freezes the blister copper in the tapping channel. The hole is burnt open using consumable oxygen lances. This puts the furnace technicians in close proximity to molten metal and heat û which is reflected in the safety incidents reported by these operators. By moving to a mudgun and drill operation, the furnace technicians will be moved away from the taphole area improving their safety. Additional benefits include: improved tapping cycles; extended taphole refractory lifecycles; and improved furnace integrity around the taphole, hopefully extending the campaign. This paper outlines the trials that have shown that it is possible to plug and drill blister copper (not matte) tapholes using a mudgun and drill.

Geochemical exploration continues to play a significant role in new mineral discoveries inAustralia and elsewhere, including terrains where mineralisation is buried or otherwise obscured by regolith cover of various types. Transported regolith commonly restricts the migration of trace elements to surface, especially in arid terrains, presenting a range of problems for traditional geochemical exploration methods that employ surface samples. Regions dominated by transported cover include the northern parts of the Tasmanides in eastern Australia and the Yilgarn Craton which are variably covered by thick alluvium and Mesozoic to Cainozoic sedimentary rocks (Anand and Paine, 2002). This paper describes the autogenous carrier flotation of 0 - 20 ¦m ilmenite using 40 -- 80 }tm ilmenite as carrier. Investigation is made of the influence of main technological parameters on autogenous carrier flotation. The mechanism of autogenous carrier flotation is discussed using extended DLVO theory. The main conclusions are as follows: 1. the smaller the fine particles the more easily they adhere.to carriers; 2. the selectivity of autogenous carrier flotation depends on the selectivity of adsorption of collector. In the autogenous carrier flotation of ilmenite/plagioclase mixture assaying 15.35 per cent TiO2, a concentrate containing 47.17 per cent Ti02 can be obtained by primary separation with a recovery of 93.05 per cent. In the first half of 1987 two four metre diameter raise bore holes were drilled at the Olympic Dam Project for ventilation purposes. The first hole, 476 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 96 days, 35 days longer than scheduled. The second hole, 407 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 39 days, 2 days ahead of schedule. Both holes were drilled with a Robbins 121R rig using a Wirth head that consisted of 23 face cutters and 5 side cutters, supplied by a contractor. After the sites were located a grouting program was carried out to help seal off an aquifer between 160 and 180 m below the surface. Cavities discovered in the Andamooka Limestone were filled with concrete. Because of the overlying dune sands and clay both sites were pre-sunk to the competent Andamooka Limestone.

Monolithic packing systems have gained in popularity as a gate side packing method. However, there has been no detailed investigation to assess their underground strength behaviour. This work includes the laboratory and in situ investigation for strength behaviour determined on various monolithic packing materials namely Tekpak-XX, Hydropak-20, Hydropak-30, Astrapak-3R, Flashpak, Thyssen pack and Aquablends. A simple technique for assessing the pack strength was developed at the laboratory by using a penetrometer, of which penetration resistance can be directly correlated with the uniaxial strength of the pack. The in situ strength investigations were made on core samples obtained from three pipes inserted inside the pack, while the penetration test were made on the pack surface. The in situ results indicated that the packing material develops an inconsistent strength on various part of the pack which was mainly related to an inadequate mixing of grouts inside the pack.

P.IISTRACTThe Pacific Rim is advantaged by the uniqueness and diversity of its geological features. Why then is geology given so little regard in the education systems of the countries of this region? Not that these countries differ greatly from those in other parts of the world. Papers presented during the Precollege Geoscience Education session at the 28th International Geological Congress (28th IGC) held in Washington, July, 1989, indicated strongly that the problem is universal. There is a marked decline in interest in the Earth sciences and many nations are looking towards methods that might change this trend. Problems affecting geological education include the lack of purpose and direction, its obsolete curricula and the difficulty in attracting gifted students.The world-wide plight of geology comes at the very time when it should be fundamental to a public understanding of the global effect of human population pressure. There is a universal awareness of "the environment" but very little awareness of the science that has supplied most of the data. Geology, as the science of the Earth, is of paramount importance to an understanding of our life on this planet, particularly in its role as the source of our every need.

The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system. Shear strength testing of rock discontinuity surfaces has been undertaken at a considerable number of open pit gold mining operations in Western Australia, as part of geotechnical studies of pit wall stability. These mining operations are located in geological settings that are typified by highly weathered and/or chemically altered rocks that contain significant structural fabric in which accurate and representative measurement of shear strength is essential.Little of the published rock discontinuity shear test work and back-analysis of failures has been conducted on weathered discontinuity surfaces, at low normal stress levels which are comparable to Western Australian conditions. Available shear strength data are reviewed and the following aspects of shear strength testing are considered:ò the need for shear strength test work and the amount of testing required;ò review of laboratory testing methods and the quality of the results; ò presentation of the test results;ò discussion of the shear strength failure criteria; ò interpretation of the test results;ò summary of test results for a variety of rock types, degree of weathering and discontinuity surface conditions;ò a review of laboratory and field shear strength data to illustrate the amount of variability that can occur; andò a monitoring strategy is proposed to manage the uncertainty associated with discontinuity shear strength.

Gold-silver mineralization at Cracow and Ukalunda in Queensland comprise quartz-filled veins, fissures and breccia zones hosted by propylitically altered volcanics and epizonal intrusions which are strongly fractured. The terrestrial volcanic facies, structural setting, type of alteration and complex mineralogy suggest these deposits are of the epithermal type.The 180 depleted character of the wall-rocks is consistent with the involvement of meteoric waters in convective hydrothermal cells associated with the vulcanism. The Cracow quartzes have remarkably low 6180 values from -2.0 to -3.4 per mil typical. of meteoric hydrothermal systems at high latitude, consistent with the inferred position of Australia during the Permian. 6180 values for the Ukalunda quartzes exhibit a wide range from 5.1 to 14.9 per mil which reflect the mixing of magmatic and meteoric waters, and a steep geothermal gradient.Further stable isotope and geochemical studies are in progress to establish the scale and morphology of the zones of anomalous 6180 and mineralogy in the wallrocks which constitute significant exploration targets.

Excavation through fill material in underground metalliferous mines is usually avoided where possible, unlike in Civil Engineering application where excavation through soft ground is normally a matter of course. In the mining situation, where excavation is normally for access only, then excavation designs are engineered for mining in hard rock, except where previous lack of forward planning has made such excavation inevitable or a mining strategy sequence necessitates some mining through fill in order to achieve optimum recovery of ore. Historically, this has been the case, because of the lack of knowledge of the support characteristics of the fill material placed underground and the lack of knowledge of the composition of the fill material as placed. The expertise and experience available from mechanised excavation techniques in Civil Engineering application (shield jacking, forepoling, spiling, and soft tunnel boring, to name a few) are available for application to the underground mining situation if the need ever arises. Multotec Process Equipment and Dominique Frantois-Bongarton have a patent for a mineral sampling device, which they call a æTrue-Belt SamplerÆ. This uses a plough, which is rotated about an axis parallel to a conveyor belt to throw material off the belt. A fixed sample cutter takes a sample from the material thrown off the belt.Discrete element modelling has been used to consider a range of plough designs, plough speeds, positions for the cutter relative to the plough, cutter apertures, cutter designs and frictional properties, prior to the building of a physical prototype.
