The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

Bauxite residue or ‘red mud’ is a by-product of the Bayer Process, the primary process of alumina refining. Due to its high alkalinity and variable composition, its storage and disposal poses high environmental risks to water sources, surrounding ecosystems and human health. The high alkalinity (pH 12–13) is a significant factor in its classification as hazardous waste; to mitigate this, Australian refineries have integrated neutralisation processes into bauxite refining. Both sea water and carbon dioxide neutralisation processes are applicable. Multiple studies have demonstrated pH reduction from 12–13 to 7–10, depending on the method. The key advantages of CO2 neutralisation are that it allows for carbon sequestration and is more effective when utilised as a pre-treatment for recovery of metals, while sea water neutralisation is more established and has been integrated into two Australian refineries. This paper proposes the application of the bacteria Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans for bioleaching of iron from hematite in bauxite residue. The genus Exiguobacterium is characterised by its high levels of adaptability, halotolerance and alkaliphilic nature. E. oxidotolerans is successful at eluting Fe2+ from hematite via reductive dissolution, which complexes with oxalic acid produced during metabolism. This aquatic bacterium presents a novel process pathway for iron elution due to direct interaction of E. oxidotolerans with hematite via the cell membrane and operates within the pH range of neutralised red mud. The proposed mechanism is extracellular electron transfer, a microbial metabolic process where electron transfer is facilitated between bacterial cells and extracellular material. Currently this is being investigated for promotion of seaweed growth in coastal environments as soluble iron aids and fortifies colonies. This has potential downstream applications for cleaner iron and steel production. While theoretical, this paper explores the neutralisation, bioleaching and application of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate complexes formed.

Pillar extraction carried out using various methods (split and lift, Wongawilli and Old Ben) involves the formation of narrow fenders (commonly 7 m of coal) formed by driving "splits" for lifting off with a continuous miner. The strata above a split and fender adjacent to the goaf consists of a cantilever beam (usually >3 m thick) that extends from the solid coal and bridges across the fender. Lifting off the fender from the split in safe conditions depends upon the bridging capability of the cantilever and the fender strength. The nature and competence of the immediate and near roof, the support capability of the coal fender and the presence of faults and or joints can adversely affect the bridging behaviour of the cantilever. Insufficient knowledge of these parameters can lead to extraction under dangerous conditions. Remnants of fenders ("stooks") also support the cantilever and their dimensions are critical to obtain regular caving and goaf falls. Stook area, goaf roof span and roof stand-up time after lifting can be related and only a relatively small increase in stook area of 10-15 m2 can lead to a significantly increased stand-up time, especially under a massive roof. Such conditions strongly influence the re- distribution of abutment stresses and can create increased outbye pillar loading. Based on detailed underground geotechnical investigations, it is concluded that strata caveability, roof cantilever behaviour, fender H:W ratio and remnant stook size are all critical parameters for successful and safe pillar extraction.

The continuous casting of zinc alloys has been of fundamental importance for many years in the production of a number of products, including sheet for architectural applications, battery cans for dry cells and wire for metallising. The intrinsic benefits of continuous casting, including efficiency and high tonnage capability, uniformity of metallurgical structure and properties, and absence of voids and other defects, have contributed to the success of these products. Less well known, but of growing importance, is the more recent application of continuous casting technology to the production of zinc alloy bar stock products, including bearing stock, machining bar stock, forging stock and cathodic protection anodes. A wide range of zinc alloys are now continuously cast in a variety of cross sectional shapes and sizes to suit the diverse characteristics of these products. Of particular significance are the introduction of hollow zinc-aluminum bearing stock, and the availability of zinc alloy machining bar stock for hydraulic applications and for producing prototypes of zinc alloy pressure die castings. In addition to the traditional benefits, continuous casting provides special properties which are important in the application of these bar stock products. The list of successful applications of continuously cast zinc alloy bar stock is growing rapidly, and the market potential for resultant new zinc applications appears to be significant.

The presence of unfavourable geological structures such as faults and dykes often can contribute to coal burst risk. Seismic events associated with rock fractures tend to cluster around these structures and it is important to understand the characteristics of seismicity for coal burst risk management. In an Australian underground longwall coalmine, two clusters of seismic activities close to the longwall face and within a section of the maingate roadway which was intersected by a major dyke were respectively identified. The induced seismicity in the dyke-roadway area was closely related to the longwall mining. These seismic events were located and the distribution of seismic events shows that more fractures were distributed on the inbye side of the dyke. The spatial-temporal changes of the seismic event locations delineate the fracture propagation as the longwall mined through the dyke. The frequency-magnitude relationship of seismicity was analysed and it was found that it changed significantly when the longwall was mining towards, through and past the dyke. The monitoring results demonstrate that because of the stiff dyke, the seismicity was intensified in the roadway section. It proves that the dyke promoted stress re-distribution and seismicity in its vicinity. More fractures were induced in the hanging wall of the dyke, whereas less strain energy was accumulated and released in the footwall of the dyke.

Below-ground technical complexity remains a traditional source of project challenge. Above-ground challenges then augment this complexity, including in the domain of commodity marketing. All challenges must be solved to produce quality, saleable, ex-mine product. The situation is further complicated in that technical complexities are not independent of each other, so complexity is best regarded as a system rather than a series of isolated factors. Additional above-ground challenges to mining projects are also increasingly sourced from societal and environmental factors, locally and globally. These challenges not only confer project complexity, but have their source in larger, global wicked problems. Finally, financing and resourcing of projects represents an ever-present challenge for all but the highest-quality mineral deposits. In the comminution industry cone crushers are widely used for secondary and subsequent stages of size reduction. Traditionally cone crushers have been operated and monitored manually. Alteration of discharge setting is now commonly achieved via hydraulic means, however, compensation of liner wear can still involve plant shutdown and loss of production. Drift in discharge setting due to liner wear is still a major problem that must be addressed to improve product quality, consistency and reduce recirculating load. The continuous demand for better quality products and the high cost of reprocessing or discarding unsaleable material, highlights the need for re-examination of the technology associated with the crushers to ensure optimum control and system efficiency. A collaborative project between Pegson Ltd, one of the leading UK manufacturers of jaw and cone crushers, De Montfort University Leicester, and Transfer Technology plc was established to address the technological requirement for automation of the control of cone crushers. The machine chosen for the study is a 900 Autocone cone crusher manufactured by Pegson Ltd. The design philosophy is based on a mechatronic approach providing a complete solution through a distributed network of intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence technology and adaptive control. The modular design of the system ensures a progressive sophistication in technology that allows the automation to be phased in as required. This will ensure maximum benefits to all sectors of the aggregate industry. It is estimated that the automation will result in savings of around ten per cent. The savings will result from minimising the production of unsaleable products by reliable condition monitoring and automation of the control and maintenance of system parameters to optimise system efficiency. Extension of the methods and principles into the mining sector is anticipated. The control over the size of crusher product will offer great benefits to the mining industry with significant implications for subsequent milling and beneficiation processes.

The Elura Orebody consists of a number of parallel, vertically oriented pipe-like structures of pyrite-sphalerite-galena mineralization located at the core of a structural dome. Concentric zoning of the mineralization into an outer Siliceous, intermediate Pyritic and inner Pyrrhotitic Zone has been previously recognized and is used in routine geologic modelling of the lead, zinc and silver grades.Statistical analysis of the metal grade distribution in the orebody has confirmed the importance of the mineralogical zones in the understanding of grade trends. The gradational nature of intra-zone boundaries, especially those related to the subjective definition of the Siliceous Zone, are apparent in the statistics.

Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

The concept of precise, accurate timing with Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) was first seriously addressed in the mid-1980s and much was made of the cheapness and profusion of digital watches in terms of the likelihood of EDDs also being cheap and easy to produce. Ten years later, with every major explosives company and many electronics groups having instituted projects to capitalise on the promise of these devices, production devices are still to come into general use. In South Africa, Expert Explosives units have been used in most applications during proving trials and more recently for production blasting in underground ring stoping and open cast coal. The outcome has been valuable learning both as to the benefits and technical requirements for electronic delay blasting, and especially, safety aspects. Examples are shown of production blasts which utilised the power of EDDs. It is evident that it is not delay accuracy alone which determines the value of these systems, but the whole robustness, flexibility and ease of delay allocation when harnessing blast engineering knowledge. Muckpile movement and shape, fragmentation and vibration frequencies have shown to be greatly influenced by designs which can be implemented no other way. The flexibility of a system and the power of the software controlling it are crucial in capitalising on blasting potential, which lies in integrating control of blast timing with other developing electronic Technologies.

As the search for major orebodies continues, the regolith dominated areas of the Broken Hill region remain one of the major exploration frontiers. The past exploration philosophies emphasising bedrock related characteristics have been limited in their ability to effectively explore in the regolith dominated areas, that are a feature of most of the Broken Hill region (Figure 1). If mineral exploration is to be more effective across all of the Broken Hill region, particularly in the regolith dominated areas, an appreciation and increased understanding of the regolith and landscape features are a necessity. Ironically, there have been very few studies of the regional regolith and landscape features of this region. Owing to the previous lack of an established regolith-landform framework, this study initially concentrated on the general characterisation and variation in regolith types corresponding to the area of the Broken Hill Block, within NSW (Willis, 1989; Stevens, 1986). The approach has been to produce a regional regolith-landform map at 1:100 000 scale and conduct a complimentary program of regolith sampling and site descriptions. This was a basis to identify areas for more detailed regolith-landform mapping (1:25 000 scale) and for producing a regional stratigraphic framework and models for landscape and regolith evolution. This information can then be used to provide a basis for regional mineral exploration models and strategies. This paper highlights some of the regionally significant regolith-landform features and their general significance to mineral exploration. More detailed information on specific regolith-landform features and study sites may be found in Hill et al (1994; 1996; in press) and Hill (in prep).

Molten salt reactor (MSR) is a promising advanced reactor system aiming to the transmutation of minor actinides such as americium in order to reduce the inventory of ultimate nuclear waste. The fuel is a molten salt in which actinides are homogeneously dissolved in the liquid phase. A chloride salt may be retained for this concept, as it provides low melting point, high solubility of actinides, harder neutron spectrum. To avoid corrosion and precipitation issues, molten salt composition has to be carefully controlled with impurity content as low as possible. Obtaining pure actinide chlorides without contaminants such as oxide, oxychloride, hydroxide and water is still a challenge. To prepare actinide-bearing salt, the chlorination of actinides oxides was investigated in an unstirred reactor under flowing gas as solid-gas reaction. The carbochlorination of PuO2 were performed in the temperature range of 600 to 800°C with chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent and the presence of solid carbon. PuCl3 was successfully synthesised by this method and characterised by X-ray diffraction measurements but some impurities such as oxide phase remain inside the formed product. Refinements of anhydrous and hydrated PuCl3 phases by Le Bail method were also performed for crystalline materials definition. Conversion mainly depends on the chlorinating temperature and the contact between the oxide and the chlorinating agent. A conversion value of 70–80 per cent was achieved at 700°C from PuO2 with quite high specific surface area. The conversion rate was not improved with increasing the chlorination time. The volatilisation of Pu was observed during the carbochlorination experiments. To avoid a loss of Pu caused by sublimation, the chlorination temperature should be limited to 650°C despite that the conversion of PuO2 to PuCl3 was enhanced by increasing temperature. Both carbochlorination and hydrochlorination of AmO2 were also carried out leading to the formation of AmCl3. These first results suggest that americium oxide was chlorinated more readily than plutonium oxide. The purity of produced PuCl3 and AmCl3 still deserves further investigations.

Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. South Australia was founded as late as 1836, forty- eight years after New South Wales, yet within five years had announced the first discovery of metals in Australia. Throughout the 1840s the mining of silver-lead, then copper, spread north through the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges creating a thriving industry, years before the discovery of gold in the eastern colonies in 1851. The first significant mine was Kapunda (1842), followed by the much bigger Burra (1845) and other copper finds at Tungkillo, Worthing, Cal- lington, and North Rhine.

The paper describes developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the demand for higher outputs of overburden and coal under less favourable batter conditions than used hitherto in the coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of these flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use of models inthese studies. An explanation is given of how solution of these problems and surface conditions unfavourable for wheeled transport confirmed selection of the long boom rather than the compact type of bucket wheel excavator for the Latrobe Valley applications.The past decade has seen advances in the manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The history of Australian manufacture of components for major brown coal excavators is traced;and reference is made to study and application of Australian and overseas (mainly German) codes and practices in the design and construction of machines made partly here and partly in Germany.A section of the paper deals with advances in electrical engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependence with mechanical design and construction.Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator, a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in northern N.S.W.

Cyanide-extractable gold is far more meaningful in the definition of ore, and control of extraction, than fire- assayable or aqua regia digestible gold. The use of cyanide- extractable gold addresses the significant problems of over- as well as under-assaying by fire and aqua regia digests. The problems of conventional control or diagnostic cyanidation extractions: lengthy extraction, and masking by pregrobbing in cyanidation extractions for assay purposes; are surmounted with a novel activator - Leach WELL. Full extraction of liberated gold, insignificantly affected by preg-robbers, can now be achieved within 30 minutes. This can assist in reducing common gold losses presently often hidden by inappropriate mine call factors, and/or high grade cut values. This paper includes a discussion of fundamental mechanisms of cyanidation, preg- and assay-robbing, which underlie the phenomena Involved.

Vale is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Since the 1970s, Vale has been using reverse cationic flotation to remove siliceous impurities from its iron ores. Whilst this flotation process has operated effectively for many years, it suffers from the problems of high reagent costs and high metal loss.In 2010, CSIRO investigated the use of a reverse anionic flotation process for Vale iron ore. Batch laboratory flotation studies conducted on Vale samples showed significantly reduced reagent costs and improved recovery of iron. In this work, the flotation behaviour of the different impurities in the Vale iron ore sample using reverse cationic and reverse anionic flotation processes is compared. To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.
