The Mt Lyell Mine at Queenstown, Tasmania was re-opened in 1995 by Copper Mines of Tasmania Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mt Lyell Mining Co Ltd. The re-opening followed over 100 years of copper and gold mining at Mt Lyell. Major changes in practice were implemented across the site. Preventing further damage to an already disturbed environment was a major priority. Sublevel caving, at a lower cut-off grade, replaced open stoping for the deep underground mining. Development and later stoping are handled by a contractor, National Mine Management Pty Ltd, in the largest underground contract awarded at the time. Large scale sublevel caving was new to Mt Lyell and not widely practised in Australia, requiring studies and systematic development of the method, particularly in drilling and blasting. Rehabilitation and upgrading of mine infrastructure have been and will continue to be a challenge. The mine has, since 1995, returned to being a stable producer with potential for growth.

Because of the coincidental location of orebodies and population in Australia, the mineral sands industry has been subjected to numerous land use conflicts, resulting in the sterilisation of strategic ore reserves and a severe downturn of activity in the eastern states. All tiers of government of various political persuasions were responsible for the decisions leading to this sterilisation. As such, it became a community response to intense land use pressure along an attractive and popular coastline. The resultant high public exposure of the industry has placed it in the forefront of developments in rehabilitation technology. In eastern Australia, the industry has operated in a wide range of ecosystems, many with conservation values. Rehabilitation ech- niques have been developed to suit these varied conditions, and much of this technology is now widely adopted throughout the mining industry. Land use considerations in Western Australia are somewhat different to those of the eastern states. Nevertheless, the same basic principles of rehabilitation apply with modification to suit local conditions and land use objectives. The development of rehabilitation in both Eastern and Western Australia is reviewed, and the direction of future trends is indicated.

The paper focuses on how rock bolts are loaded in different rock masses, as well as in pullout tests. Three analytical models for rock bolts are presented in brief, one for bolts in continuously deformed rock masses, one for bolts in blocky rock masses, and one for bolts in pullout tests. The bolt models are used to interpret measurement data for rock bolts from three sources and to help specify the modes of axial load in the rock bolts. It is found that in continuously deformed rock formations fully coupled rock bolts have only one axial stress peak. The position of the axial stress peak moves towards the far end of the bolts with increasing rock deformation. In blocky rock masses several axial stress peaks may appear in the rock bolt. The position of this kind of axial stress peak does not change during the entire loading process. For rock bolts in pullout tests, decoupling of the interface always occurs first at the loading point. The decoupling front moves towards the far end of the bolt with an increase in the applied pull load.

As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

Commonly held ideas about effective training have long emphasised the importance of realism. Realistic training builds better experience among the trainees and a better perspective on the training material, making training more effective. While great strides have been made in this realm for mine safety and mine rescue training there are still areas that can be improved. One possible area is the expanded use of a mine fire simulation program where the migration of gases and smoke can be realistically displayed in an emergency, and outcomes varied as different conditions are being simulated. The use of mine fire simulation software potentially allows for the creation of more realistic scenarios in that smoke advance rates can be measured and recreated in evacuation scenarios, or that gas readings in mine rescue training can be dynamically and realistically changed to show the effect that time has on the fire scenario.CITATION:Slaughter, C and Tien, J C, 2015. Managing productivity and improving efficiency for a healthy return on capital employed have become key mining industry strategies under prevailing tough global market conditions. However, achieving this in a multisystem environment such as a mining operation can be daunting. The field of discrete event simulation offers some relief, giving engineering teams insight into multivariable systems and stochastic processes. It allows for integrated system thinking and domain expertise to be woven into project thinking fibre. Directed system optimisation and therefore improved efficiency becomes possible. Furthermore, capital discipline accrues from optimal upgrade investments. This paper illustrates the practical application of this approach by reviewing a typical case study for a direct shipping iron ore operation. Dynamic simulation was used to establish maximum processing plant capacity under varying material characteristics and identify capital-efficient upgrades for increasing production.The study started with descriptive statistical analysis of existing data. Discrete equipment and system capacities were defined, followed by static plant mass balance calculations to establish bottlenecks and overall static capacity. Equipment ‘uptime’ and ‘downtime’ analyses established system and overall plant availability and utilisation. From this information, a dynamic simulation model could then be developed and initially calibrated against actual plant performance to verify its robustness. Once confirmed to accurately represent existing plant dynamics, system capacity response to variable changes could be tested to ultimately determine maximum plant capacity. Additionally, plant optimisation was incorporated to arrive at optimal upgrade points. Maximum capacity and necessary upgrades were established as a function primarily of feed size distribution. Additionally, the interfacing effects of rehandling feed material to the final product grade and potentially to life-of-mine were established as important outcomes. Shales form distinctive peaks in natural gamma downhole logs, which are used to manually identify the location of ore boundaries. These shales form important lithology markers that can potentially be automatically identified using Gaussian processes. This approach is trialled using data from a typical iron ore mine in Western Australia which contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley province.The method uses Gaussian processes (GPs) with a single length scale squared exponential covariance function. A library of 8 m sections, where natural gamma measurements were taken at 10 cm intervals down the hole, was used to train the GP model. This library was iteratively improved and was tested using natural gamma logs that were not included in the library. Areas that were misclassified or were not clearly classifi ed were added to the library. The new library was then used to train the model and improve the results. The trials used a double gamma peak from the NS3 and NS4 shales at the boundary between the Newman 1 and Newman 2 ore zonesin the Newman member and the AS1 and AS2 shales at the base of the West Angelas member. The results show that both boundaries can be identifi ed with an accuracy of over 99 per cent. The classification has the highest accuracy on undeformed shales. This method provides a fast, accurate and objective identifi cation of shale and ore boundaries and can potentially replace the current manual detection.

Ti-added ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel is produced by adding Al and Ti during the secondary refining process to deoxidise molten steel and to bind C and N which are detrimental to the deep drawing quality of the steel product. However, the production of Ti-added ULC steel faces challenges, including submerged entry nozzle clogging and surface defects on cold rolled coils. The troubles were often attributed to ‘Al-Ti complex inclusions’ in the molten steel. However, the evolution of oxide inclusions including their stability has been still unclear. In the present study, the evolution of these inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was investigated by phase diagram measurement, CALPHAD thermodynamic modelling, high-temperature stability test for the oxides, and observation of transient behaviour of oxide inclusions in the steel. The phase diagram of the Al-Ti-O system was elucidated with an emphasis on oxygen potential, which significantly controls the stability of the oxides. CALPHAD thermodynamic models and a self-consistent database were developed. The transient behaviour of Al-Ti complex inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was observed in situ using a confocal scanning laser microscope. This was additionally validated by the new thermodynamic model. The equilibrium phases of the oxide inclusions were investigated using a high-temperature resistance furnace, and were analysed using a secondary electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, and electron back-scattered diffraction. By considering the morphology and crystal structure of these inclusions, the evolution of Al-Ti oxide inclusions was elucidated. Various behaviour of Al-Ti inclusions and their influence on steel cleanliness are discussed.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

Australia has been an important producer of zinc minerals and metal for many years.Late in the last century Edgar A. Ashcroft, a versatile and enterprising electrical engineer proposed the treatment of zinc rich ores by roasting, followed by leaching to extract zinc, purification of the solution and electrolysis of the purified solution to produce zinc. Residues from the leaching operation were to be smelted in a lead blast furnace to recover lead, silver and gold.Ashcroft (1897-98) and (1898) has.given us a most interesting record of the attempts made at the Sulphide Corporation's plant at Cockle Creek near Newcastle, NSW, to put his ideas into practice. In spite of the best efforts of all concerned, including the use of electrolysis of aqueous chlorides and sulphates, zinc could not be deposited consistently and the project failed although lead smelting continued until 1922 (Woodward, 1965, p. 158). Based on later experience with Broken Hill materials the presence of undetected cobalt in the solutions was the likely cause of the inability to deposit zinc (Kirk and Othmer, 1956).

The efficient design of carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plants involves the integration of both process engineering and design engineering.Many recently constructed plants have not recognised the above interrelationship, and as such have incurred higher capital and operating costs than were in reality necessary. This has been compounded in some cases by slavishly following the design of plants where process conditions are different for the ore characteristics in question, thus perpetuating design errors that finally become industry "accepted practice".In the paper that is to be presented the unit operations of crushing, grinding, classification, leaching, adsorption, desorption and electrowinning in C.I.P. plants will be discussed with reference to the integration of process and design engineering.

In recent years, the. art of electric steelmaking has received a great deal of attention, and naturally, much controversy has existed from time to time regarding the relative merits of different practices and tywes of furnaces. Nevertheless, at the present time, the basic principles of the process are reasonably well established, and by far the greatest percentage of electric steel is a product of the basic lined, direct arc type furnace. Ferro alloy manufacture has demanded the development of furnaces having very different characteristics to those used for steel. Some special alloys, however, require conditions of manufacture which are more closely approached in the steel type furnace, and thus the latter has been adapted where necessary for the production of these alloys.One such alloy, low carbon ferro-manganese, is manufactured at Whyalla, South Australia, in a basic-lined, direct arc furnace, which is used alternatively for the production of alloy steels.BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ELECTRIC FURNACEThe principle of melting by electricity was first applied to the melting of iron in 1879 by William von Siemens, whose equipment consisted of a small crucible into which were introduced two carbon electrodes. The acoustic emission (AE) technique has found wide application in rock engineering. Generally, acoustic emission, which is produced by a rapid microcrack growth, is an ubiquitous phenomenon associated with brittle fractures and can provide information on the failure process in rocks. The sudden release of stored energy in the form of an elastic stress wave that travels from the point of origin within the material to a boundary is called an AE signal or a discrete AE event. Based on a number of experiments and analysis, the correlations among the rock type, the complete stress-strain behaviour, mode of failure and AE properties are investigated and the AE pattern has been classified as four types: single-peak AE, double-peak AE, continuous AE and absent AE. Each type of AE pattern corresponds to a certain type of rock and is largely related to the internal structure and imperfection of a rock. Applications of the AE technique in stability monitoring, in situ stress assessment and seismic source location are also discussed.

An empirical, kinematic model is developed which calculates the trajectory of individual blocks of rock in a blast, their point of impact in the muckpile and the final shape of the muckpile. The method is based on the determination of initial block velocity and requires input on stemming length, bench height, subdrill, burden, spacing, energy of explosive per unit length of blasthole, energy attenuation rate and resistance to movement. The model, which will form part of a comprehensive blast simulation package, has application in open cut mining in predicting muckpile geometry and the movement of grade blocks during blasting, which in turn impact on shovel productivity and grade control.

Multiple-point simulation is a family of methods used to generate conditional facies simulations that present the same spatial dependence as a user-defined training image. The main advantage of using a training image is the easy integration of geological concepts in numerical subsurface models. The strength of multiple-point methods is that it allows making the best use of geological expertise when data are too sparse for inferring a model of spatial continuity. However, despite being appealing to geologists, the multiple-point methods are often not used in practice due to the difficulty of building complex 3D training images that contain realistic features.A new framework for multiple-point simulation is presented that involves small and simple training images. The main idea is to use random transformations to expand the range of structures available in the simple training image. The training image is not regarded any more as a global conceptual geological model, but rather a basic structural element of the subsurface. Complex geological structures are obtained, whose spatial structure can be parameterised by adjusting the statistics of the random transformations, based on field data or geological context. In most cases, such parameterisation is possible by adjusting two numbers only. One advantage is that the training images are so simple that they can be easily built even in 3D. The method allows building 3D models that reproduce shapes corresponding to a desired prior geological concept and are in phase with different types of field observations, such as orientation, facies or geophysical measurements. The flexibility of the approach allows for naturally integrating different types of data. This is demonstrated on an example involving seismic data assimilation. Examples where complex 3D folded structures are built from a simple training image and a few orientation data are shown.

The Cannington deposit is one of the largest accumulations of silver-lead known. Located 135 km southeast of Cloncurry in North West Queensland (Figure 1), Australia, the deposit is currently in the feasibility stage of its development. The deposit is named after the nearby Cannington Pastoral Property which runs some 25 000 sheep on 'downs' country. The investigations of the Cannington deposit are carried out under the authority of Mineral Development Licences 139 and 144 and Exploration Permit for Minerals 6788, Answer Downs. Exploration for Broken Hill Type (BHT) silver-lead-zinc deposits in the Mt Isa region has been undertaken by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited's Minerals Division (BHPM) since the early 1980s following in-house research which showed that the Eastern Succession of the Mt Isa Block exhibits characteristics which were favourable for hosting BHT

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. The application of photogeological techniques and analysis of more advanced remote sensor images can be a cost and time effective tool in the search for desert placer gold deposits. Examples are given of regional analysis using standard false color composit Landsat images and conventional black and white aerial photography. The examples include identification of sites to sample to evaluate the pathways of .alluvial gold migration and identification of potential sites of concentration. The results of these studies developed an increased number of target areas and exploration in proceeding with promising results. In addition to the development of additional target concepts and identification of specific target areas data useful to evaluation of mineability can also be obtained from photogeological investigation. Some indication at least can be obtained of the existence of duricrusts and salines that may hamper mining. Identification of possible sources of water is another important task in the desert environment. In addition indications of the clay content of the material to be worked is very important because of its economic impact on operational costs and overall recovery. The application of photogeology to these questions is discussed.
