Selenium is a minor constituent of the raw materials processed by the Cockle Creek smelter of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited. Certain proposed raw materials contain higher levels of selenium, and these will create a problem with regard to the composition of liquid effluent discharged from the smelter. A method has been developed for removing selenium from the smelter circuit by the sulphation of the fume collected in the Acid Plant electrostatic-precipitators. It is planned that by treating 10-20% of the total dust arisings there will be a substantial reduction in the levels of selenium reporting in effluents when treating selenium-bearing raw materials. The selenium is recovered in elemental form.

A pilot plant evaluation of the Savmin process, for the purification of mine water was commissioned by Anglogold and conducted at the Stilfontein Gold Mine, Margaret Shaft at Stilfontein in the North West province of South Africa. The purpose of the project was to obtain the operating conditions and operating costs, to produce different qualities of product water, as well as design parameters for upscaling to an industrial plant. The project was undertaken by AngloGold and Mintek of South Africa.

The commercial success of a mining project can be strongly influenced by the business activity which takes place away from the mine site. The project revenue is determined by marketing success which results from persistent research and full realisation of suitable products and by-products and appropriate upgrading achieved in conjunction with proper material security and insurance. Significant costs of transport can be optimised, protection of the environment carefully managed and skilled employees acquired as a valuable asset. Working capital requirements are often substantial and should be carefully established and financed, possibly by special contractual arrangements for product sales.

Porphyry Cu-Mo (Au) deposits of southern and western China are localised in ancient arc environments and continental-collision orogenic belts. Despite the contrasting tectonic setting, the known deposit geology and geochemistry appears identical in both. As such, the application of existing ore deposit models to atypical collisional settings suggests that significant potential exists for future discovery of significant porphyry deposits throughout the accreted cratonic blocks of Asia. Offshore petroleum development involves massive capital expenditure and financing demands, with the main participants being large international oil companies and State owned enterprises. Types of project oriented financing include take-or-pay contracts, throughput agreements, and production payment financing. The main project finance credit aspects are revenues, investment budgets and cost over- runs, reservoir, political and other risks and special problems such as weather and corrosion in the North Sea. A variety of documents is required and a mix of equity, export credit and Euro-market financing will typically be included in the financing.

The paper briefly discusses the benefits to proponents of a formal environmental assessment process. It is argued that any process should be fair, cost effective and efficient, involve all affected parties, and should identify important issues at an early stage. The paper outlines the procedure used in Victoria, and the ways in which it attempts to address the above criteria.In conclusion the paper discusses progress towards a national approach to Environmental Impact Assessment. This is currently being pursued by the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council.

The Argyle Diamond Mines process plant incorporates a high level of computerised process control, and facilitates detailed performance monitoring. The control system was designed to provide a high degree of plant automation and a good quality interface to operators and management which includes control, data logging, graphics displays and detailed reporting. Performance monitoring techniques, both on-line and off-line have been developed to ensure circuit performance is optimised with particular emphasis on minimising diamond losses.

With the recent collapse in commodity prices the size and number of resources project has diminished markedly in recent years. Coupled with the disappearance of the "open cheque book approach", this has led to a revival of the lump sum or turn key project. The key features of this mode of development are compared with the "owner managed" and "reimbursable cost plus fee" alternatives - with respect to schedule, cost and quality control. Key facts for the successful implem- entation of this mode of development are identified. However, the approach is not advocated for all projects and the potential shortfalls are also identified.

There are no manuals or handbooks for budding mill superintendents or process plant managers. Most who obtain this level of responsibility have gained their training from watching the good and bad of their predecessors and the successful ones have themselves graduated from the school of hard knocks. This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990.

The Plant Control and Data Logging System for the Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC) is part of a control and communications network designed to provide a high level of surveillance of open cut plant and facilitate the efficient co- ordination of operations and plant maintenance. The computer system selected utilises a central dual mini-computer and multiple microcomputer data transmission network ,linked to the plant controllers using distributed, microcomputer based remote data collectors or outstations. The Mineral Science Laboratory of the Government Chemical Laboratories has recently investigated various procedures for the analysis of the platinum group metals (PGMs). This investigation covered a number of methods for the extraction and preconcentration'of the PGMs from a wide range of geological materials. The nickel sulphide extraction technique proved to be overall the most applicable procedure. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), electrothermal atomisation atomic absorption spectroscopy (ETA-AAS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were examined for their suitability in analysing platinum group metals in solution. ETA-AAS and ICP-MS proved to be the instruments of choice due to their low detection limits.

Zinc cementation and carbon adsorption are both presently used for precious metals recovery from cyanide leach solutions. Each of these techniques exhibits unique processing features which renders them suitable to treat solutions with different properties and in different applications. In this study, the two processes are reviewed and compared. Operating data from a number of Merrill-Crowe precipitation and carbon adsorption plants in North America have been obtained and used in this analysis. The relative capital and operating costs for the two processes have also been considered.

The causes and impact of stability problems associated with longhole open stoping (LHOS) at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) are discussed and LHOS stability objectives presented. This involves a growing concern about environmental degradation, an increasing desire for the setting-aside of natural areas for wilderness preservation, accelerating pressures for the return of large areas of Crown land to Aboriginal ownership and a widening view that economic growth itself may be undesirable (Burton, 1987). This has lead to much public debate over the implementation of sound environmental policies to achieve a balance between economic necessities and ecological goals.

The detailed engineering of a coal preparation plant is important from the point of view of optimum constructibility, operational security, ease of maintenance, operating costs, meeting environmental goals, safety, plant housekeeping and reduced corrosion and erosion. This paper reviews the several large coking coal preparation plants engineered by Fluor Australia in the past 10 years, and changes and trends apparent for detailed engineering of future plants. Areas of engineering to be covered are coal feed preparation, conveyor design, plant layout, electrics and instrumentation, noise attenuation, erosion and corrosion protection, magnetite handling, rejects and tailings disposal and coal stockpiling and blending.
