The water pollution hazard posed by the derelict Conrad mine site, to the water and associated stream sediment of Borah and Maids Creeks and the nearby Copeton Dam storage, has been assessed. Mine water, tailings and tailings dump leachate have polluted water and stream sediments in Borah Creek downstream of the mine site. Acidity, arsenic, copper, lead, iron, silver and zinc are the principal pollutants. Under dry and low flow conditions, mine water was found to be the dominant polluting source, however, leachate and run-off from tailings dumps were also significant under and following wet conditions. Soluble arsenic, lead, iron and silver species in mine water and leachate were found to be rapidly incorporated into sediments, but acidity, copper, and zinc persisted in the creek water. Under low flow conditions, the water of Maids Creek is polluted with copper and zinc (up to 4.4 and 34 mg/l for copper and zinc respectively) and the pH is decreased (from pH 5 - 7 to pH 3 - 6) by entry of Borah Creek water. Values found in Maids Creek were variable and related to flow regime and distance downstream from Borah Creek confluence. Water in Copeton Dam storage, having a much larger volume of water with a higher bicarbonate buffering capacity (50mg/l versus 15mg/1), is not affected by entry of Maids Creek water. Polluted sediment from Borah Creek has contaminated Maids Creek for 2km downstream to Copeton Dam storage. Stream sediment downstream of the Borah Creek confluence, contains up to 1.0% As and 1.4% Pb in the less than 200 micron size fraction. Under high flow conditions, arsenic was found to be moved out from the mine site as insoluble species, associated with suspended sediment in Run-off.

Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fi xed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user: to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems, to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and to conduct a comparative and risk analysis. An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help fi les as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Offi ce 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

In earlier studies along a mining region recipient (the river VormbScken, northern Sweden), the fraction of certain trace metals recovered in the particulate phase has been found to increase with increasing concentrations of particulate iron. This study was conducted to see if the pattern could be reproduced by adding minor amounts of ferrous iron, simulating groundwater inputs. When the iron is oxidised in the near neutral river water, it will form iron oxyhydroxides and precipitate. Trace metals may be either co-precipitated along with the iron, or adsorbed onto the freshly formed precipitates. If this is the case, such a mechanism may be incorporated as a part of a final polishing step in a mine drainage treatment system based on natural attenuation processes. The experiments were performed at 0¦C and 22¦C, on authentic river waters collected during the winter and summer of 2002, respectively. In order to investigate the influence of particles and bacteria initially present, filtered river waters (4 solution were added to the experimental beakers, increasing the iron content of the waters by 0 - 1.5 mg/L. The oxidation and precipitation processes were followed by means of filtration (0.2 ¦m) for up to seven days. In order to be able to compare the experimental results with the actual field situation, on both experimental occasions, surface water samples were collected also from three stations situated along the river. The samples collected were analysed for iron, calcium, and trace metals by AAS and ICP-MS. The iron oxyhydroxides formed in the experiment did not influence the partitioning of As, Cu, and Pb to the same extent as the particulate iron encountered along the river appeared to do. This paper describes a more generalised or generic approach for the mine ventilation network problem. More specifically, it defines the network variables in a manner that establishes the network problem in a nonlinear programming format. Assigned to each branch are three variables: air quantity, regulator pressure loss and fan pressure. Each variable is imposed with lower and upper bounds. Based on these, the generalised network problem for a mine ventilation network with B branches is presented as a system of B independent network equations in 3B unknowns (variables) with variable bound restrictions, and it is classified as a nonlinear optimisation. A nonlinear programming model has been developed for this generalised network optimisation problem. The model is formulated and transformed into a standard equality-constrained nonlinear programming form with given variable bounds. Then, MINaS (Modular In-core for Nonlinear Optimisation System) is used to obtain solutions. Examples are given to illustrate this nonlinear programming approach to the mine ventilation optimisation problem.

Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. Its aim was, to determine standard time values for specific operations, which would provide management with a measure of productivity beyond the existing measures of tons or feet of advance, and also to determine whether increased output was available under existing operating conditions.

Pressure leach liquors from the pressure oxidation of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore were treated to remove iron, either by pressure oxidation (the Hematite process) or with particles of magnetite (the Magnetite process), followed by cementation of various metals with zinc dust to obtain a purified solution from which zinc was electrowon. Satisfactory iron removal was achieved by both processes after neutralisation to pH 4.5 or 5.5. Pressure oxidation of the liquor at 200¦C and 690 kPa oxygen overpressure, conditions similar to those of the Hematite process used in the zinc industry, resulted in the precipitation of the iron as hematite. With the Magnetite process, an iron hydroxide was precipitated onto magnetite at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature and removed by a magnetic separation step. The performances of both these processes for the removal of iron are compared. It is concluded that the Magnetite process offers considerable cost savings. Other impurities, in particular arsenic, were also removed with the iron in both processes. Cementation at pH 5.2 and 85-90 ¦C with 3.5 g/L zinc dust reduced the levels of copper, cadmium, and nickel to a satisfactory level and subsequent electrolysis in a laboratory cell gave an acceptable deposit of zinc.

The Olympic Dam deposit is located some 600 km north of Adelaide in South Australia. It was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation and in 1979 a joint venture was formed with British Petroleum for the evaluation and development of the project. Studies were completed and construction started in 1986 with the plant being commissioned progressively between April and August of 1988. In 1993 Western Mining acquired BP's interest and are now owners of the whole deposit. The scale of the initial development was 1.5 Mtpa of ore for the production of 45 000 tpa of copper cathode, 900 tpa of uranium oxide and some gold and silver. Two expansion programs have occurred in 1992 and 1995 and current performance is at the rate of 3 Mtpa of ore for the production of 84 000 tpa of copper cathode, 1500 tpa of uranium oxide, 24 000 oz per year of confined gold and 380 000 oz per year of confined silver (Table 1). An aerial view of the plant is shown in Figure 1. The benefit of diversifying into the production of more than one product is undoubted and the flexibility of being able to produce variable quantities of copper and uranium also allows advantage to be taken of a change in market conditions.

In Munich's peculiar hydrogeological conditions (water bearing sand strata between layers of impermeable clay, silt or marl) are proper functioning groundwater lowering methods of decisive importance for underground construc- tion. Shield tunnelling with compressed air has al- ready proved to be successful. In view of growing application of shotcrete tunnelling it was obvious to consider the use of compressed air even here. After a preliminary research-project the first subway section "shotcrete under compressed air" was 1979 awarded in Munich and since that time five sections have been awarded, respectively completed. On the basis of the experiences meanwhile obtained reports will be given stating the frame conditions in which this new construction method can be applied. The tunnels consist of two shells. The outer ist driven by shotcrete under compressed air. In order to keep the air overpressure low, the groundwater often is previously detensioned or partially lowered. The inner shell of watertight concrete is built under atmosperic pressure.

The use of pipeline-c to carry crude'oil and petroleum pro-ducts is a reliable and economic*Way to transport large quantities of oil. The length and size of these pipelines have continued to grow throughout the world as the demand for petroleum has in-creased and as the price of other transportation-methods has risen. At the present time pipelines 'can move a barrel of oil a distance of 100 miles at an average cost of ,80.06 U.S. dollars.The major elements in pipeline design are discussed. Methods of calculating pressure drop and horsepower requirements are pre-sented. These are variations of standard equations.in which the elements of each equation are expressed in terms common to the petroleum industry. Major equipment is discussed., particularlyas it relates to operation and economics.Cost data are presented to aid in preliminary economic ana-lysis. Curves illustrate the cost of oil transportation at flow rates between 10,000 and 500,000 barrels per day and permit the selection of pipe diameter-which will result in minimum operating costs.

This paper is intended to continue the subject in the light of recent work, from where it was left at the conclusion of the discussion on the excellent paper by the late Mr. Noel Haszard. The position then obtaining is briefly summarised below:-The points which received general agreement at that time were:-'(1) That the gold occurs, probably in an elemental form, in a state of very fine division in the pyrite.(2) That the aim in roasting of Kalgoorlie flotation concentrates should be to obtain the maximum porosity possible. The gold tellurides were amenable to treatment with either a' solution of high lime and cyanide strength combined with fine grinding, or bybromocyanidation without re-grinding.(3) That a low roasting temperature is essential during the elimination of the first atom of sulphur, if the final calcine is to give a good extraction by cyanidation.(4) Even with the best temperature conditions of roasting then determined, and after a period of cyanidation of the calcines until no further extraction was obtainable, the lowest calcine residues obtainable were equivalent to approximately 1·8 dwts. per long ton, based on an original concentrate of pure pyrite.There was some division of opinion at the time as to whether the temperature of the later stages of roasting was significant, and also as to the reason why the initial roasting temperatures had so marked an effect.

The traditional trading of iron ores is based on chemical specifications and particle size distribution. However, recent characterisation studies, that bring additional information like mineralogical composition and microstructural (textural) aspects, have become important. They contribute to determination of the iron ores downstream beneficiation operations and subsequent steelmaking processing, allowing improvements on both new and existing processes. Despite progress in commercial scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS) automatic instruments in the last decade, these systems are not capable of performing the identification and discrimination of major iron ore minerals (haematite and magnetite) and the consequent description of its microstructure. On the other hand, reflected light microscopy (RLM) can easily distinguish the iron oxides by their reflectancies, but it cannot discriminate quartz and epoxy resin, which present similar colour on images. The present work proposes an innovative method to perform a quantitative mineralogy characterisation of iron ore based on RLM-SEM co-site microscopy. This technique combines images obtained by RLM and SEM through an automatic registration procedure that accurately aligns the two kinds of images of each field. In fact, it creates multi-dimensional images, which are then analysed using image processing and pattern recognition techniques. The case study is an itabiritic iron ore from Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (Brazil) which contains mainly quartz, goethite, magnetite and haematite. The discrimination of phases that are not distinguishable with either RLM (epoxy resin and quartz) or SEM (haematite and magnetite) can be performed through this multimodal approach, allowing the subsequent mineralogical quantification. The mineralogical quantification computed by image analysis was consistent with independently obtained results based on the Rietveld technique.

Formation of porphyry-style ore deposits starts with the metal extraction from magmas at so-called magmatic-hydrothermal transition (MHT). The processes and compositions at MHT are difficult to study as the record of them is poorly preserved. As the MHT is characterised by massive crystallisation of quartz, including quartz æeyesÆ and veins, their study can elucidate questions related to metal transport and deposition. Quartz grains from the porphyry deposits all over the world (Antapaccay, Peru; Batu Hijao, Indonesia; Climax, USA; Panguna, PNG; Far Southeast porphyry, Philippines; Rio Blanco, Chile; Omsukchan, Russia) were studied by optical, SEM-CL and BSE microscopy, electron microprobe and LA ICPMS. Quartz grains, even within each sample, have different shapes (rounded, egg-shaped, amoeboid or euhedral) and cathodoluminesence (CL) patterns (shape, number and width of bands in CL images). The outer layers of quartz are markedly different, which is unexpected if the grains had formed in the same conditions. Inflections and blurring of CL bands are often structurally associated with fractures that are commonly healed with secondary quartz and associated fluid inclusions. Our results show that quartz æeyesÆ could not crystallise from a silicate melt as normal phenocrysts. It is likely that in situ segregation of residual SiO2- and H2O-rich liquid and its solidification followed by coagulation (eg formation of silica-gel globules) took place in the magma (crystal mush) during MHT. Such globules could remain in a plastic state for a long time even at rather low temperatures. The solidification of globules occurred after bands of different composition had formed and led to fracturing of solidified and inflection of unconsolidated layers. All fluids (liquid and vapour) released from the original silicagel during solidification were trapped as inclusions (aqueous, salt-rich and sulfide). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Since the introduction of froth flotation for industrial practice, the process has long been developed and improved by making cultivated guesses or by using trial and error methods to a varying degree. Fresh possibilities have emerged after development of new surface sensitive analysing methods and in situ electrochemical methods. Having had the possibility to combine different findings between science and everyday plant practice, Outokumpu has been able to develop a catch-all procedure to manage a flotation process taking into account the specific requirements set by different minerals in a slurry. A number of these procedures are available and offered globally to clients as part of a Plant Audit service. The Outokumpu Plant Process Audit (Process ef-X) concept comprises of mineralogical determinations from process samples and plant data analysis together with electrochemical process measurements using mineral electrodes. Automatic control loop analysis can also be included. The objective is to combine the results for a basis of flotation process improvement. Since this methodology has earlier been an in-house practice, it follows that the results are also reflected in the development and design of the OutokumpuÆs processing equipment. An increasing number of ores have a very intimate fine-grained texture and it may be physically impossible to combine high grade with acceptable recovery by a flotation process alone. For such cases, combinations of different hydrometallurgical û mineral separation û pyrometallurgical processes are available. Mineral specific information and chemical expertise of flotation technology can be utilised in development of other processes, as well.

The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM), Kalgoorlie, has been performing dynamic testing of reinforcement systems as part of the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia (MERIWA) Projects M349 and M349A sponsored by WASM, the Western Australian State Government and the mining industry. These projects have resulted in the construction and commissioning of the WASM Dynamic Test Facility and a program of reinforcement system testing. The primary purpose of the WASM projects is to evaluate the performance of complete reinforcement systems when subjected to an axial dynamic load. The test procedure, monitoring and associated analysis enable assessments for each component (ie the element, the internal fixing mechanism and the surface hardware) of the reinforcement system. The performance of a reinforcement system is usually defined by a static force-displacement response to axial loading. However, this static response may not be applicable to dynamic loadings associated with violent failure of rock due to overstressing as mines progress to greater depths. It was therefore appropriate that the responses of reinforcement systems subjected to dynamic loading be defined and evaluated. The key findings from the tests on a number of reinforcement systems are presented and recommendations made regarding their application for dynamic loading.

Potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock contained in dumps formed as a result of open cut mining of metalliferous orebodies are conventionally sealed or covered using a near-saturated, low permeability compacted clay layer, protected with a mulch layer and/or vegetated growth medium. The purpose of the compacted clay layer is to limit oxygen diffusion and the infiltration of rainfall into the dump. Where the aerial extent of the PAF waste rock dump is large, or where suitable clayey material is in short supply, it may be difficult to source sufficient suitable clayey material to form the cover. The paper describes a laboratory-based investigation of combining inert waste rock and tailings to form an alternative seal or cover material. The inert waste rock was sourced from the trafficked surface of a non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock dump, with a maximum particle size of about 100 mm. This was combined with NAF thickener underflow tailings slurry in various mass ratios, and the resulting mixtures tested for their particle size distribution, compaction characteristics, soil water characteristics (relationship between suction and volumetric moisture content), and saturated hydraulic conductivity. The mixtures tested ranged in consistency from those dry enough to be compactable, to those with the consistency of wet concrete that lend themselves to placement without the need for compaction. The laboratory test results showed that the suitability of the mixtures as seal or cover materials is very dependent on the particle size distribution of the mixture, with well-graded mixtures having substantial fines performing best.

The paper gives details of the performance of a 6-ft. by 6-ft. grate discharge ball mill which was converted into a rod mill of the overflow type and then into a grate discharge rod mill. Proposals for further alterations are outlined.INTRODUCTIONThe mill of King Island Scheelite (1947) Limited recovers scheelite by gravity methods.Crushed ore at the rate of 34 tons per hour is divided between two mills. (6 ft. by 6 ft. and 8 ft. by 6 ft. respectively), the mill discharges being pumped to a common distributor which feeds seven Hummer Screens. Each screen has three 4-ft. by 2-ft. Ton-cap sections and repulping compartments are provided. The screen oversize is returned to the mills whilst the screen undersize is finished grinding section product. A third (6 ft. by 6 ft.) mill regrinding the coarser table tailings also discharges into the common Hummer Screen Distributor.The screen undersize is pumped to a bowl classifier which separates at 200 mesh. The bowl classifier sands are treated on tables whilst the bowl classifier overflow, after thickening, is treated in the slime plant by flotation. The flotation concentrate is further concentrated on vanners and slime tables.A recovery of 80 per cent. is possible by tabling whereas only 50 per cent can be recovered in the slime section. The object of comminution is, therefore, to reduce all the new feed to less than a certain mesh (22 mesh Tyler) with the production of a minimum quantity of minus 200 mesh material. cheelite is, a very friable heavy mineral (Sp.Gr. 6'0) and is therefore susceptible to overgrinding. The major operational objectives of a mine water resource management system (WRMS) are to supply the water needs of the mine and mill, to minimise disturbance to mining due to rainfall flooding or seepage and to dispose of excess water. Historically, company management have placed a significantly lower emphasis on managing the WRMS as compared to managing production. Changing Government legislation concerned with the disposal of water from mine sites is, in many cases making mining companies look more closely at how they manage their water. For example, within the next few years it is likely that prior to mining approval by the Government, mining operations will have to submit water management plans/budgets and contingency strategies in addition to operational plans. While the formulation of a comprehensive water management plan/budget is an additional cost to the company at the mine establishment stage, such plans can be beneficial to the operation in the longer term.The two keys for the efficient design, operation and development of a WRMS are the establishment of written goals which have managerial priority and secondly, access to appropriate good quality data. Managerial priority towards the WRMS will increase as a consequence of the education of mine operators in the benefits to the operation of good WRMS management or less desirably as a requirement to meet Government legislation. The collection of appropriate WRMS data is a more complex issue and to obtain information efficiently and cost effectively relies on the clear definition of the data application.

The iron ore deposits in India are rich in iron content but usually contains high alumina and silica. The current industrial practice results three products namely lump, fines and slimes. The lump and fines with or without beneficiation are directly fed to the blast furnace and sintering plant respectively while the super fines or slimes are presently discarded as tailings. Around eight million tonnes of iron ore slimes estimated as being 15 - 20 per cent by weight of run of mine ore containing ~48 - 62 per cent Fe, is discarded every year causing huge loss to the Indian iron ore industry. In addition, these slimes stored in massive tailing ponds pose enormous environmental and ecological problems. Extensive investigations have been carried out on three iron ore slimes generated at Barsua, Bolani and Meghahatuburu iron ore mines of India. The studies include physical, chemical, mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies adopting conventional hydroclyclone and wet high intensity magnetic separator. The characterisation studies have indicated that most of the gangue minerals are accumulated in finer fractions. The studies on hydrocyclone and magnetic separation had indicated that an iron concentrate of 61 - 65 per cent Fe could be obtained by recovering 59 - 78 per cent of the iron values present in the slimes. Depending on the nature of the slimes the alumina and silica levels have been brought down to 2.5 and 1.0 per cent respectively. The effects of different operating and design variables along with detailed characterisation studies have been highlighted.

Mispah form (FAO: Lithosol) soil contaminated with >380 000 mg kg-1 creosote was co-composted with sewage sludge and poultry manure for a period of 19 months. The soil was mixed in a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) with wood chips to improve aeration. The soil-wood chips mixture was then mixed in a ratio of four soil-wood chips mixture: one compost material (sewage sludge or poultry manure). Compost heaps were set up in triplicate on wood palettes overlaid with double layers of nylon straw bags. Control experiments, which contained the contaminated soil-wood chips mixture without sewage sludge or poultry manure were set up in triplicate. Moisture, temperature, pH, ash content, C:N ratio of the compost and the creosote concentration of the soil was monitored monthly. The concentration of selected creosote components in the soil was also determined at the end of the incubation period. Temperature was observed to rise to about 60¦C in the poultry manure and about 58¦C in the sewage sludge within two months of incubation, while temperature in the control fluctuated between 15¦C and 35¦C throughout the incubation period. Creosote concentration in the control was reduced by 17 per cent at the end of the incubation period while concentration of creosote in the sewage sludge and poultry manure compost was reduced by about 99 per cent. The percentage rate of creosote reduction in the poultry manure compost was initially lower than observed in the sewage sludge compost. However, the reduction rate became similar towards the end of the treatment period. The concentrations of selected creosote components were reduced by about 100 per cent within the same period. Respiration of compost microorganisms and counts of microbial populations showed that microbial activity correlated with reduction in creosote concentration.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.
