Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The thickness of the sludge capping varies between a few centimetres and three metres (Peterson, 1996). Bacterial leaching of sulfide minerals are fairly well established in heap, dump and in situ leaching and the primary bacterial treatment of refractory gold concentrate using CSTR have gained industrial prominence in recent years. Three cultures, a mesophile T ferrooxidans (DSM583), a moderate thermophile Sulfobacillus acidophilus (strain YTF1) and a extreme thermophile (Sulfolobus strain BC65) were used for the biooxidation (pre-treatment) of the Porgera gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under optimum O2 and CO2 enriched air (30 per cent O2 and ten per cent CO2) based on volume ratios. The positive effect of using oxygen and carbon dioxide enriched air for the biooxidation of gold-bearing pyrite mineral was clearly demonstrated where an increase in Fe release rate by a factor of 2.8, 1.8 and 1.5 for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively were observed compared with the shake flask tests. The lag phase observed with the other test conditions such as in shake flask or with air decreased by about 80 per cent for all three cultures. The average observed dissolved oxygen concentrations in the pulp for these tests were 8.7, 5.8 and 5.0 mg/L for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively, indicating that O2 was not limiting in these tests. The pulp redox potential was observed to increase with time for all tests coincident with the leaching rate and reaching a maximum of 663 mV, however the maximum value differs for each strain, with DSM583 exhibiting the highest followed by YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Biooxidation of pyrite under optimum gas enrichment at different pulp densities showed near total Iron extraction occurred for pulp densities of three, ten and 20 per cent (w/v). At high pulp densities, more so at 40 per cent than 30 per cent (w/v), the leaching rate decreased rapidly for tests with YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Monitoring of dissolved O2 shows that O2 demand increased with increasing pulp density and the average dissolved O2 concentration observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus at 40 per cent solids concentration was 1.0 mg/L and below, suggesting limiting oxygen and carbon dioxide conditions for these two cultures. The decrease in leaching rate observed at high pulp densities (30 and 40 per cent) under optimum gas enrichment was accompanied by low metal dissolution and low redox potential values which was attributed to shear stress due to attrition of cells by high solids concentration, toxicity of metal ions especially Ag and Fe and the formation of precipitates and jarosites as confirmed from XRD analysis of leach residues hence impeding the leaching process. Limiting conditions due to high pulp density and viscosity were only observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus. The subsequent cyanide leaching for precious metals from the pre-treated pyrite concentrate in all cases shows the extent of gold and silver recovery increased with the degree of pyrite oxidation and Au and Ag recoveries in excess of 80 per cent were achieved compared with only 18.1 per cent and 35.9 per cent for gold and silver respectively when treated by direct cyanide leaching on the original, untreated concentrate.

Following residentsÆ concerns that the ongoing operations of Collinsville Coal (CCP) mine may be resulting in the release of contaminants, including products of acid mine drainage (AMD), into downstream environments, the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency (QEPA) issued CCP with a Notice to Conduct or Commission an Environmental Evaluation at Three Mile Creek. A key objective of the Environmental Evaluation was to assess the extent and magnitude of impacts to aquatic communities and their habitats. A multidisciplinary investigation examined a suite of physical, chemical and biological indicators to meet this objective. The study also aimed to identify contaminants of concern and the location of potential pollutant sources. Potential indicators of AMD, including elevated dissolved solids concentrations and low pH, were evident within the mine lease. However, significant differences in concentration of these indicators upstream and downstream of the confluence with Three Mile Creek were not observed. Although only proxy indicators of AMD contamination, these results suggest that the extent of impacts downstream is minimal. For the purpose of this study, physio-chemical indicators were selected on the basis of those best likely to provide an understanding of the likelihood of contamination, within the constraints of readily available long-term monitoring data. Ecosystem health indicators were adopted to supplement the existing data set and provide a more æroundedÆ perspective of water quality attributes within the system, generally unattainable by standard physio-chemical assessments. In contrast to AMD products, sediments were considered more likely to have a widespread impact on aquatic ecosystems. Waterways throughout the study region, including those unaffected by mining, have been affected by broad-scale sedimentation and were typically highly turbid. Due to the many diffuse sources of sediment potentially liberated within the catchment, the contribution of the mine compared to other land uses on total sediment loads entering streams is difficult to determine. This is clearly a major management issue for mines throughout the Bowen Basin. Streams of the central Queensland region display enormous variability in water flows and physio-chemical characteristics over a range of spatial and temporal scales. This variability presents major difficulties in distinguishing anthropogenic impacts from natural variability (noise). Despite this variability, impact monitoring by mines in the central Queensland district has tended to focus almost entirely upon physio-chemical indicators. The results of the present study indicate that a multiple indicator approach to environmental assessment is more useful for separating mine related impacts from natural ænoiseÆ and impacts from other land uses. In the absence of such information, by adopting the precautionary principle of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), there is potential for an environmental impact to be incorrectly attributed to mining when other activities in the catchment may be contributing to changes in stream æhealthÆ.

The paper describes a computer model developed within the State Electricity Commis- sion of Victoria for use in open cut planning. The purpose of the model is to simulate all the typical occurrences in, and influences on, the coal supply and overburden disposal systems in order to be able to assess their performance. The model incorporates much of the long term and day-to-day operations planning logic required for the allocation of resources within an open cut. This logic takes account of power station demands, bunker stocks, plant and crew availability, the balance of reserves between dredgers, planned maintenance, etc. The perfor- mance of plant within the system is simulated using random selections from statistical distri- butions of Time to Failure and Time of Failure for each plant item. The application of the model in selecting a suitable bunker capacity in a notional open cut development is described to illustrate the potential of the model in optimising plant selection.

This is the seventh major symposium organised by Illawarra Branch over the past five years and the fifth dealing with various aspects of coal. It is clear that all of you here need no convincing that black is beautiful! This symposium is on a broader canvas, covering the overall field of occurrence, preparation and utilization of black coal throughout Australia. It is thus the most comprehensive treatment of the subject by the Institute since the symposium organized in 1950 by the Sydney Branch with the co-operation of the then newly formed branches in Newcastle, Illawarra, Central Western N.S.W. and Southern Queensland, all of which shared coal as a major interest. The 1950 symposium was adopted as a volume in the series of seven published by the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1953. This historical reminiscence brings to our minds the circumstances in which these new Institute branches were formed. This happened in the year of the presidency of the late Frank Hockey, and at the time the Australian black coal industry was in many ways at a very low ebb. It was the time of extreme shortage of coal following World War II, and the industry was beset by industrial unrest on such a scale that daily bulletins were posted listing the number of idle pits, of idle miners and of tons of lost production. There could not, of course, be any thought of export marketing. Some of the more picturesque bulletins recorded the number of pits at which the ceremonial emptying of billies took place, and the number of pits at which the aroma of the horses' breath was insupportable. At an Institute conference at the time it is on record that the late lamented Austin Edwards, that tireless mineral researcher, author and editor, in his gentle way chided the personnel of the industry and the members of the Institute for having allowed a situation to develop in which a whole generation of Australian children could grow up without ever having seen coal or knowing what it was. It is sad that most children and most Australians have still never seen coal, and think of it as something dirty and uninteresting. The desperate situation of the black coal industry inspired moves by people in industry and in governments, whose plans and efforts have been recorded elsewhere, to modernize coal mining methods, to introduce coal preparation, and generally to restore the mines and the mining communities and to re-cast the steel industry and electricity generation. Amelioration of the traditionally troubled industrial relations was an integral part of this overall programme, and whilst one would wish this aspect had progressed further the situation has, in fact, improved immensely. New investment in exploration, mining, preparation, transport and utilization both by the existing coal mining groups and by new entrants, Australian and overseas, have played a large part in bringing about the transformation of the industry to such a point that Australian needs are being fully met and a large export market is being supplied - a situation that few would have dared to hope for in those dark post-war days. Forecasts of exports from New South Wales and Queensland show coal becoming a dominant foreign exchange earner for an indefinite term. Old King Cole may have vanished from our children's nursery rhymes but King Coal is here to stay, providingthat costs in the industry can be kept within competitive limits. It is all too easy for an industry to price itself out of the export market by inflation, by increased costs for a variety of reasons, and through currency readjustments. A second proviso is that we must continue to encourage a balanced attitude to environmental matters.

The value derived by good mine planning is often underestimated as many mines steer their attention to the more immediate and more easily recognised successes made by the day-to-day operational æbush fireÆ fighting. Similar to machine maintenance, the efforts made to quickly rectify short-term breakdowns are well recognised; whereas the value derived from the work in planning, scheduling and undertaking preventative maintenance is not so obvious or readily quantified. Too often the focus of the business shifts to building and supporting an efficient operations team at the expense of developing a highly experienced team of mine planning practitioners that are well trained with procedures and purpose-built tools to develop optimum mining strategies. A resource has an inherent value based on its quality parameters and its likely mining conditions. How well that value can be unlocked is governed, to a large degree, by the proficiency of the mine planning practitioners, as they, essentially, set the foundation of the mine business and the path along which the mine will operate. The importance of having a well documented and procedural mine planning methodology that integrates both a thorough technical and economic understanding of the resource cannot be over emphasised. The aim of the mine planning process is to develop a robust mine design and production capability which can best cater for future uncertainty whilst providing the best opportunity to maximise cash flow into the business. The planning process must be transparent and auditable, clearly summarising the process steps and assumptions made to arrive at a justifiable and defendable outcome. To provide maximum value to the business, the planning process must be repeatable and scalable to enable easy replication throughout the different mines and projects within an organisation. The diminishing numbers of highly experienced personnel within our industry, coupled with the growing pressure to clearly demonstrate that appropriate due diligence has been exercised, means that well documented and monitored mine planning processes using purposed built and innovative tools need to be developed to ensure optimum outcomes.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF batching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid batching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically recover isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

The Porphyry Gold Mine (150km NE of Kalgoorlie) was reopened in November 1983 with production commencing in April 1984. Original reserves quoted for the open pit were 822000 tonnes at 5.2 g/t Au based on wide spaced diamond drill holes. Close spaced grade control drilling has revealed some loss of tonnage and a significantly lower grade. In the area of the pit mined to 30 June 1985 this grade control reserve estimate contained 67% of the gold in the original ore reserve with the grade being 19% lower. It is anticipated that the final grade control reserve estimate will contain around 80-85% of the gold contained in the original reserve. There has been close agreement between the Mill Head grade (4.19 g/t Au) and the grade control predicted grade (4.2 g/t Au) confirming that dilution is not a major problem. After initial poor agreement (attributed to "lock-up" in the circuit) the bullion calculated head grade steadied out at 93% of the grade control prediction. This difference is considered to represent the geostatistical bias in the drill hole/crushed rock sampling. Gold recovery has been in the range 93-95% (compared with bullion calculated grade). The net result is that the recovered grade of ore mined to 30 June 1985 is 70% of the original ore reserve grade.

Resource rent tax is a form of taxation or royalty, which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax (APT). The implications of the current form of Additional Profits Tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine, if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of Additional Profits Tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation. Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional Profits Tax is both time and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory. A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with Additional Profits Tax. The review includes examples based on the structure of Additional Profits Tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

The paper describes the studies conducted to date on the short term adsorption/desorption of gases in coal from the point of view of developing techniques to predict imminent outbursting conditions in coal mines. A number of different parameters such as'dP express, K' and AV 0/60 etc. which have been effectively used overseas were studied on samples of coal from Westcliff and Leichhardt Colliery. Results indicate that these do not seem to be valid indices for predicting an outbursting condition. Based upon desorption isotherms, a new index defined as "L" has been developed which shows promising results. This index is in a position to differentiate the changes in the structures of coal and its proness to outbursts. The "LZ value determinations and its usefulness opens a new field where it would be possible to determine outbursting conditions from existing drill cores obtained during exploration studies or from long holes drilled in advance from underground workings. The index is more or less independent of the time elapsed between the extraction of a sample and the conduct of the test. The test for "L" can be conducted'on site or in the laboratory. The test is simple, easy to carry out and the "L" value for a sample can be calculated in less than 20 minutes. It could be adapted as a routine test for monitoring outburst conditions in mines.

The United StatesÆ reporting standard for the mining industry for securities purposes is contained in the Security and Exchange CommissionÆs Industry Guide 7. It defines proven and probable Reserves using its own definitions, and prohibits the disclosure of quantitative estimates, for all mineralisation other than those two Reserve categories (though disclosure of Measured and Indicated Resources as quantitative mineralised material estimates is now informally allowed). Similarly, it restricts disclosure of value estimates to Reserves only, which SEC policy generally requires to be on an historic cost accounting basis. The SEC does not maintain a formal Competent or Qualified Person policy. In March 1999, the US-based Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) released an update of its 1991 guidelines for definitions to be used in reporting of Mineral Resources, Reserves and Exploration Information, closely abiding by the 1997 CMMI recommendations. However, without SEC recognition, reporting under the SME and CMMI definitions is effectively barred for US companies. The SEC intends to adopt the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). This will occur within just a few years, when the convergence project for development of the IFRS has reached a satisfactory point. The US is the largest financial supporter and participator in IASB. The Extractive Industries Standard of the IFRS will likely terminate Industry Guide 7. However, the effect of this international replacement will likely be equally restrictive. This could possibly neutralise the benefit of a CMMI-based global reporting standard. SME, the US society encompassing the widest range of mining industry professionals, does not have a Code of Ethics. It has no mechanism for requiring members to abide by a professional standard. SME is presently looking into possible solutions for this deficiency. US-based professional societies that do have a binding Code of Ethics, generally cater to a single profession, and are not just mining industry related. The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA) are examples. The SME is considering creating a subsidiary body with an enforceable Code of Ethics. To support a CMMI-based global reporting standard, competent persons will need to work across international borders. A standardised mechanism for qualifying and registering competent persons will be needed. National rules and laws must allow competent persons to easily enter countries to perform their work. State issued licenses are increasingly required for much of the work performed in the US mining industry by engineers, geologists and minerals appraisers (valuers). Such licenses are not required by the SEC for Reserve reporting in the US, may not be required for valuation of mineral properties under certain circumstances, and except for real property valuer licenses, they generally do not have a binding code of conduct. However, state licensing of professionals forms a substantial and increasing barrier to interstate trade in professional services, and can be a prohibitive barrier to professionals from outside the US. Any rationalisation of this confusing patchwork of regulations confronting US minerals industry practitioners will only occur as part of larger, national change, hopefully aimed at compliance with international standards and protocols. The US does not have a valuation standard aimed specifically at the mining industry. The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, the national valuation standards, often must be applied to mineral property valuation, but contains no specific instructions for minerals. The author has campaigned against development of minerals valuation standards proposed by US minerals institutes. Instead he encourages the mining industry worldwide to place its support behind the initiative of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) to include an extractive industries section in its International Valuation Standards (IVS). This should provide a global set of valuation standards for the mining and petroleum industry within two years. This addition to IVS will provide essential valuation standards reference support for the extractive industries financial reporting standard of the International Accounting Standards Board. The IVS has achieved a high level of acceptance in the developed and lesser developed countries of the world. It provides a comprehensive framework of Generally Accepted Valuation Principles for the valuation profession internationally, for valuation of all property or asset types. IVSC is effectively a sister organisation to IASB. The IASBÆs International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), previously known as the International Accounting Standards (IAS), reference and quote IVS in some instructions for determination of fair value. IVSC is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) member of the United Nations and maintains liaison with many important international economic, accounting and financial agencies, such as the OECD, IMF and WTO.

Forty two new apatite and zircon fission track analyses on the Kubor-Marum-Bena Bena area of northern Papua New Guinea severely constrain the timing of tectonic events and hence the tectonic models for New Guinea, particularly arc-continent collision. In addition, the data can be analysed regionally in terms of known and assumed lithospheric fault zones inferred to control mineralisation (eg. Corbett 1994; Kendrick et al 1995; Hill et al 1996) to determine reactivation of these zones. When combined with the new kinematic plate models for the evolution of New Guinea (Hall 1997) there is the potential to predict likely zones of mineralisation. The low-medium grade? Palaeozoic rocks of the Bena Bena terrane yielded a zircon fission track age of 17 Ma, indicating the time of cooling below 200¦C. The age is consistent with `the shift, at about 16-18 Ma, from volcanolithic sediments to mixed provenance sediments rich in quartz and metasedimentary lithic fragments in the southern Finisterre Ranges (Abbott et al. 1994). This shift was recorded in the Sukurum Formation, which ranges in age from Middle Miocene to Pliocene with quartzose and metasedimentary grains in all samples. Although recording rocks at temperatures of 200¦C and hence depths of ---5km, the 17 Ma age suggests the Bena Dena terrane was rapidly cooling at that time due to uplift and erosion, supplying metasediments to the southern flank of the Finisterre Range, currently 100 km to the east. Significantly, the Middle Miocene Akuna Intrusive Complex, dated 14-17 Ma by Page (1976), lies almost entirely within or adjacent to the Bena Bena terrane. Potentially the uplift, erosion and cooling of the terrane at 17 Ma may have been caused by the rising plutons. If so the 800 sq km exposure Akuna Intrusive Complex at the SE end of the Bena Bena terrane may have been the focus of uplift and supplied the metasedimentary detritus to the Finisterre Range. This suggests that the Finisterre Range was not far removed from the Bena Bena terrane, perhaps less than the 200 - 400 km indicated by Abbott et al (1984). The Akuna Intrusive Complex probably resulted from subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate beneath the PNG margin. In order for the subducted slab to reach depths of -100km below the area to facilitate partial melting and plutonism (Hamilton 1994), subduction probably commenced 3-5 Ma Ma before plutonism, ie at or prior to 20 Ma suggesting a significant change in the tectonic regime at -20 Ma, perhaps related to collision of the Solomons - Ontong Java Plateau collision (eg. Hall 1997). The main result to emerge from the 28 apatite fission track analyses is that the whole of the study area underwent rapid cooling due to uplift and denudation in the Late Miocene, mainly between 7-10 Ma. Results from several samples indicate that they were not totally overprinted prior to uplift indicating maximum burial of -3 km in the Middle Miocene, assuming normal temperature gradients. The burial is less if higher gradients are assumed, allowing for Middle Miocene plutonism. The Late Miocene cooling in the Mobile Belt agrees well with the Pliocene to Recent cooling in the Fold Belt to the SW, interpreted to be due to uplift and erosion associated with fold and thrust deformation of the Miocene Limestones (Hill & Gleadow 1989). This timing relationship suggests, that compressional deformation in the Mobile Belt occurred in the Late Miocene, at 105 Ma, and that the deformation migrated towards the undeformed foreland in the southwest in the Pliocene, at 5-2 Ma. The regional Late Miocene uplift and denudation in the Mobile Belt is also consistent with that postulated by Crowhurst et al (1996; 1997) for northwest PNG, although they considered the event to have occurred mainly from 8-5 Ma. If so, then the uplift and denudation may have been migrating from east to west as well as to the south into the Fold Belt. These timing relationships place significant constraints on tectonic models for the area, indicating that the major compressional pulse in PNG commenced in the northeast at -10 Ma and migrated to the southwest and west in the latest Miocene to Pliocene. This suggests that the initial arc-continent collision and associated shortening occurred in the Late Miocene around -10-12 Ma. This immediately followed intrusion and cooling of the Akuna Intrusive Complex at -17-14 Ma and the Bismarck Intrusive Complex at -12.5 Ma (Page 1976), indicating a linkage between the end of plutonism and the start of compressional deformation. The timing is consistent with the observation of Hamilton (1994) that in areas of subduction `the common regime in overriding plates is extensional and leading edges are crumpled only in collisions. This suggests that the Middle Miocene magmatism in northern New Guinea occurred during extension above a subducting slab and was terminated by Late Miocene arc collision and resultant compression commencing at -10-12 Ma. In general, these data indicate that the acme of denudation and cooling in the Mobile Belt was in the Late Miocene, with relatively little denudation there since. In contrast, Hill & Gleadow (1989) found that the peak of denudation in basement outcrops in the Fold Belt was in the Pliocene at -4 Ma. A methodology for modelling dense medium cyclones is presented for cyclones operating under conditions which avoid particle interference or apex crowding. Particle interference and apex crowding are shown to result in less efficient separations and represent undesirable regimes of dense medium cyclone operation. In order to avoid apex crowding, suitable medium to ore ratios and apex diameters should be used. Cyclone density differentials should be kept below approximately 400kg.m 3 to limit loss of efficiency due to excessive particle recirculation within the cyclone. The relationship between size-by-size partition curves shows that the flow split and density of the medium within a cyclone can be related to two new parameters, the pivot partition number and pivot density. The parameters are common to each partition curve in any set of size-by-size data and are mathematically related to the familiar performance characteristics, ecart probable (Ep) and separation density. The resulting expression confirms that the Ep and separation density are directly related.

The drying operation of materials from particulate solids, through slurries and suspensions, to continuous sheets represents an important part of several processes in the chemical and mineral industries. The increasing demand of high productivity at low cost and minimal environmental impact makes it complex to evaluate and choose the best available drying technology for each industrial application. The drying technologies are mainly characterised on the basis of how the wet product is related to the drying medium, namely: direct and indirect drying. In the direct drying method (convection drying), the product is brought into direct contact with the drying medium, which may be hot gas or air. Large quantities of gas are necessary for transfer of the required energy. A special case of the direct dryer is the fluid bed dryer, in which the product floats on a cushion of air or gas. The process air is supplied to the bed through a perforated distributor plate and flows through the bed of solids at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of particles. Very high heat and mass transfer values are obtained as a result of the intimate contact with the solids and the relative velocities between individual particles and the fluidising gas. In the indirect drying method (conduction or contact drying), the wet product is separated from the drying medium. The drying unit can consist of a rotor forming the indirect contact heating surface mounted in a stationary or rotating shell. The indirect method uses saturated or superheated steam resulting in low energy consumption and minimal environmental impact. In this paper, a review is given of the technologies available on the market based on different drying methods. The advantages and the disadvantages are summarised with respect to issues such as investment and operating cost, maintenance, product capacity, product handling and environmental impact.

Crude ores and concentrates, in every degree of complex structure and resistance to treatment, are arriving daily from near and distant places, moreover their metallic contents are so varied that an outsider, unacquainted with the operations, would naturally wonder how it is possible that the rare elements are to be sorted out and classified into their true order, to meet industrial requirements.The proposition is necessarily not a simple one and owners of mining properties have naturally refrained from smelting their complex ores on account of the technical difficulties of attaining high efficiency and recovery of the metals, where limitations are imposed in procuring a variation of ores that lead to the best smelting and refinmg result. Commissioned by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, emphasis is placed upon the development of the Mount Lyell Mine in Queenstown. Chapter 19 æWidening HorizonsÆ details the review the Mount Lyell Company undertook in 1904/05 to ensure the future of the operation, following the pessimistic outlook regarding diminishing reserves and poor grade ore. The analogies documented between the Mount Lyell Company at that time, and Gold Mines of Australia 90 years on are remarkable, with both companies demonstrating a commitment to the Mount Lyell area through active exploration, the proactive search for alternative technology and the recognition of the valuable human resource. As Blainey writes (Blainey, 1993), æwith its expanding chemical works, its huge Tasmanian mines, its railways and smelter, its coke works and its mine crusade, Mount Lyell was probably one of the nation's five great industrial companies in 1906 or 1907. This brief phase of industrial and mining expansion had its seed in the threat of extinction . . .Æ After a number of reprieves, the Mount Lyell mine did stop production in 1994, but that only provided an impetus for a review and rebirth.

Sparse geochronological data have been combined with data on felsic suites and depositional facies of rocks to provide an overview of the development of the Arunta Block. The study provides a basis for construction of a map showing the distribution of granites and associated felsic extrusive rocks in the Anmta Block. The tectonic evolution can be subdivided into a series of significant time intervals. Only in the initial stage, to about 1880 Ma, was there any subduction-related magmatism. All later felsic magmas were crustal-derived melts. The early, pre-1880 Ma arc-related units in the SE contain small showings of Cu, probably including the small Cu deposit in the Casey Bore Inlier at the edge of the Simpson Desert. The most significant time-interval for formation of mineral deposits was 1820-1760 Ma, when volcanogenic Cu-Pb-Zn deposits formed in the Strangways Metamorphic Complex and also in the Jervois district. Fine (<20 µm) valuable mineral particles are difficult to recover in conventional flotation circuits. (Trahar and Warren, 1976; Jameson, Nguyen and Ata, 2007; Kohmuench et al, 2018). This leads to a loss of valuable fine mineral particles to tailings. Recovering these particles would be of economic benefit. Novel reagents, including temperature responsive polymers, for example, are being developed to improve recovery of fine valuable mineral particles by froth flotation (Ng et al, 2018a, 2018b). The approach involves selectively aggregating the valuable fine particles and making these aggregates hydrophobic, resulting in hydrophobic aggregates of appropriate size (in order of 100 microns) being amenable to recovery by froth flotation. The polymers developed have been produced at laboratory scale but not a full scale yet. The exact cost of producing such novel polymers is currently unknown, but they are likely to be more expensive than conventional reagents.

Geostatistical simulation has been widely used in mineral resource classification of metalliferous deposits based on international standards such as JORC code which is one of the most extensively used around the world for reporting the mineral resources and ore reserves alongside with objectives of the companies (Sadeghi, Madani and Carranza, 2015). However, the modeling process becomes challenging whenever the relationship between the variables of interest is complicated and cumbersome to model. This characteristic sometimes manifests itself in complex spatial and global cross-correlation measures, deeply depending on the formation and genesis of the deposit. The objective then is to generate the models that not only reproduces these significant characteristics, but also, it leads to a better understanding of a mineral resource estimation and successive decision-makings. In this respect, there are different approaches taking into account the spatial correlation structures, for which can be classified as independent simulation, co-simulation, and factor-based methodologies. In this paper, three techniques: Turning Bands Independent Simulation (TBSIM), Turning Bands Co-Simulation (TBCOSIM) and Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform (PPMT); from those aforementioned approaches are selected to model two cross-correlated variables (Iron and Aluminum Oxide) belonging to an Iron ore deposit located in Brazil, in order to examine which methodology better reproduces the corresponding complexity in terms of local correlation measure. This is an intriguing area which is in the Kalgoorlie field but not of it, inasmuch as it is separated spatially from the main Golden Mile by the Golden Pike Fault. Mr. Haycraft has stressed the differences-the mineralogical and structural differences of economic significance between the two areas.I would like to ask whether he is satisfied that the lithological sequence in the North End is the duplicate of that in the main Golden Mile area irrespective of the postulated effects of erosion, and more specifically whether there is any chance that the quartz-dolerite-greenstone of the North End may be in any way dissimilar from the quartz-dolerite-greenstoneof the Golden Mile which is tellurude bearing.J. A. Haycraft: In relating the quartz-dolerite in the Hannan&apos;s North-Mount Charlotte area back to the Golden Mile, we find some quite close similarities. Although the rocks are similar they are not necessarily one and the same.At Mount Charlotte we have three varieties of dolerite- a coarse-grained gabbroic dolerite on the eastern side of the orebody, the host rock medium grained and on the western side, a fine grained dolerite. Further west we have an amphibolitic variety of quartz dolerite.Recent drilling south of the Golden Pike fault on the Enterprise No. 20 level had indicated a remarkably similar sequence of rocks.
