This paper discusses the use of a mechanised shaft sinking machine Herrenknecht Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM) – to conduct the 93 m presink for the Wira Hoisting Shaft at the Prominent Hill Mine in South Australia. This technology has been widely used in the global construction industry, however, this was the first time it had been used in Australia and the second time in a mining application. The non-entry shaft sinking system eliminates risks associated with a traditional manual method and allows all shaft construction operation to take place from surface. The geology in the upper 100 m at the Prominent Hill mine is conducive to mechanical excavation, with expected rock strengths below 130 MPa. This enabled an alternative shaft construction methodology to be considered. The Herrenknecht VSM system was selected due to its extensive work history and demonstrated performance in similar ground conditions. In collaboration with the operations and design team, the shaft collar and surface configuration were modified to suit the requirements of the VSM, additional equipment, and loading jacks that support the pre-cast lining. Dedicated concrete moulds were designed in Germany and built in Italy. The concrete segments were cast in Adelaide and road freighted to site. This paper outlines each stage of the presink – refurbishment, transportation, logistics, establishment, operation and demobilisation. Selecting this shaft presink excavation methodology, delivered through positive collaboration and communication despite some challenges, shows the benefit to the mining industry of applying new technology and innovation to improve safety and productivity.

The 3.5 million tones per annum Enterprise mine is the newest underground copper mine at Mount Isa in northern Australia. At a depth of up to 2000 metres, it is the hottest and deepest mine in Australia. In situ rock temperatures sometimes exceed 60¦C requiring the installation of substantial amount of refrigeration to provide safe working conditions for mine workers. The latest refrigeration project at the mine, R67, required the design and installation of the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler and AustraliaÆs largest chilled water plant. The plant is mounted on the surface of the mine and provides 25 MW of refrigeration to cool some 580 kg/sec of ambient air to 11.4¦C. This is equivalent to the production of 6300 tonnes of ice per day. The plant was designed for high availability, as any downtime would result in substantial production losses to MIM, and also had the potential to quickly result in unsafe levels of heat stress within the underground workplaces. The bulk air cooler has been designed for a capacity of 34 MW(R), the expected ultimate carrying capacity of the 7 m vertical intake shaft. Being located well inside the tropics, technical issues such as control of thermal pulldown required special consideration. Also, the bulk air cooler had to be designed to handle whatever demand for fresh air was imposed by the mine below, with over 100 per cent variations in airflow expected, and without loss of thermal efficiency. A substantial program of risk assessment and HAZOP studies was used to protect underground miners from leaks of ammonia into the air or water circuits. Fully automatic control systems result in a totally unmanned plant that is supervised remotely. To improve efficiency, the plant is controlled by the outlet air temperature from the bulk air cooler û the first in the world to be controlled in this fashion. Engineering solutions to address environmental considerations were incorporated at the design stage through features such as the use of ammonia (a greenhouse-friendly gas) as the refrigerant, zero atmospheric discharge and a wastewater collection and re-use system.

As mining activity moves to remote and less developed locations globally, a holistic approach to mine development is fundamental for achieving a balance between strong financial returns and corporate social responsibility and transparency. Key inter-related fundamentals such as social licence to operate, life-of-mine operational planning, minimising environmental impacts and, most importantly, attractive investment returns for the mining company all contribute to the viability of any new mining project.However, the typical practice in the mining industry is often to treat environmental and social/community aspects as separate compliance issues that are dealt with at minimum cost and disruption to the project and resulting operation. This often results in less than optimum environmental and social outcomes, and presents considerable liabilities at the time of closure when rehabilitation programs continue to require funding when all revenue has ceased.The five capitals model seeks to identify each of the key contributors to sustainable development as financial, manufactured/physical, social, human and natural to formulate a type of triple bottom line approach balancing these often competing project factors. The SUSOP® sustainability risks and opportunities framework, developed by the mining industry, bases its approach on the five capitals model and proposes an approach that breaks down enterprise silos to identify innovative solutions for life-of-mine sustainability. This paper summarises the lessons learned during a recent carbon reactivation kiln upgrade project at the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt. The kiln is being replaced to ensure that the plant achieves full value from the current throughput expansion from 5 to 10 Mt/a.The suitability of the original engineering design criteria for kiln selection and the adequacy of the original kiln are reviewed in the light of the carbon chemistry, operating experience and a site inspection of the kiln. Particular aspects of the reactivation facility are discussed including: predrying, preheating, feeding, gas seals, kiln heat transfer, steam injection, counter-current sweep gas flow, carbon cooling, fines minimisation and removal.Design criteria for a carbon predryer, reactivation kiln and cooler combination for carbon heavily fouled by high molecular weight frothers and collectors are discussed and the abridged Ausenco datasheet for the combination is presented.Responses to a request for a budget price sent to most of the worldÆs suppliers of carbon regeneration kilns are summarised.CITATION:Claflin, J K, La Brooy, S R J and Preedy, D, 2013. I once read an æarticleÆ in FHM Magazine entitled æThe Coolest Jobs There Ever WasÆ. It was about a group of guys who were pursuing careers that any person on the planet would just kill for. I distinctly remember drooling over the pages, thinking how much I would love to be Michael SchumacherÆs Chief Engineer at Ferrari, or the Principal Designer and Tester for one of the big Dutch rollercoaster companies. From that moment on, I decided that I wanted a career that was cool enough to make it into the pages of that article. Throughout my time at university, I always had that article in the back of my mind. As a result I constantly wondered about what sort of job I could end up with once I left university. More importantly, I wondered if FHM would be banging down my door to put me in the magazine! After a long and stressful job hunting process (in between completing a thesis and studying for exams) I finally managed to land myself a job with Orica Mining Services. I can honestly say I didnÆt know what to expect when I first joined Orica. Most of my friends ended up working for big mining companies, while I was offered a position with one of the biggest suppliers to these mining companies. However, I had a feeling when I was discussing the role with my future supervisor during the interview process that the job was going to be awesome. I have now spent a year working for Orica and I absolutely love it! While I feel that my job is worthy of being in that FHM article, unfortunately, I donÆt think I am going to get my opportunity to be in the magazine. Apparently I donÆt look too good in a bikini! However, I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the journey that I have taken so far û from my time as an environmental science graduate, then moving on to mining engineering, to now, being part of the Orica Mining Services Graduate Program. My suggestion is to use this paper as a resource. I have learnt during my time at university, as well as my time in the workforce, that the best people you can learn from are your peers. Take what you feel is relevant from the paper; hopefully it will help guide you in shaping your own career.

The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. "Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. With the declining of high-quality hematite and magnetite iron ore reserves and the increasing accumulation of material resulting from mining and beneficiation operations that appear as lowquality depots and discharged materials in tailing dams, the necessity of recycling these reserves is increasingly becoming a critical demand. The Chadormalu iron ore mine is among the largest deposits of magnetite-hematite iron ore in Iran. In this mine, the total wet processing tails accumulated in tailing dams are over 92 Mt containing 25–40 per cent Fe. Laboratory and pilot tests on tailing samples led to the design and implementation of the Chadormalu Tailing Recovery plant (CTR) with a unique process circuit in Iran. In the CTR plant, after three steps of re-pulping with spiral classifiers and sanding machines, the underflow is concentrated by two stages of WMIMS and produces 64 per cent Fe grade magnetite concentrate. The tailings of the drums are mixed together and introduced into the hematite recovery section, including two stages of VPHGMS separators, and 60 per cent Fe grade hematite concentrate is produced. This plant has been in operation for over ten years with a total yield of 18.93 per cent. Due to changes in the materials extracted through new tailing dams, the quality of the final concentrate dramatically dropped to 56.36 per cent Fe and 0.79 per cent P; therefore, applying reverse flotation and removing phosphorus from the final concentrate was inevitable. By using this approach, upgrading of the concentrate to 63.01 per cent Fe and 0.05 per cent P was obtained. Furthermore, regarding the high amount of phosphorus in the tailing streams, direct flotation has been designed to produce apatite concentrate as a by-product stream through a flotation system comprising series banks of Rougher, Cleaner, and Re-Cleaners flotation cells. Hence based on the results, at optimum conditions, a final apatite concentrate with a yield of 15.78 per cent and 14.06 per cent P could be achieved. Successful implementation of this project has led to the production of magnetite-hematite and apatite concentrates with annual capacities of 250 000 and 45 000 t, together with total yields of 11.59 per cent and 6.19 per cent (includes de-sliming of apatite flotation feed), respectively.

Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context. This paper provides a simple guiding framework for grinding circuit optimisation, focussing on common themes in past optimisation success stories, the conditions for success and techniques that can be employed to identify and define opportunities. Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.

If the industry keeps doing what it has always done, it will continue to get what it has always got - rising operating costs. Why is this so? Generally grades being chased are becoming lower, stripping ratios becoming higher, ability to attract personnel to the industry becoming harder and/or more expensive, higher safety standards are being demanded and environmental governance is being enforced.   How then should the surface mining industry plan for the future whilst delivering on improved safety and the environment? In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) points the way, as a partial or complete substitute for trucks.   IPCC systems promise significant advantages over traditional truck and shovel operations, including improved safety, reduced operating costs, reduced dust and noise emissions, far greater efficiency in energy use (electric versus diesel motors predominantly and the ability to regenerate electricity back into the local grid for downhill situations), reduced carbon emissions (dependent on power generation source) and reduced water consumption. Despite these advantages, there is a general industry reluctance to migrate from truck and shovel operations. This reluctance stems from a familiarity with truck and shovel operations and a perceived concern that IPCC lacks flexibility which will negatively impact on the mining operation.   In studies conducted since 2007 (with the new modular builds) comparing IPCC with truck-optimised pit designs, IPCC has delivered up to USD$0.82 per tonne moved less than an equivalent truck operation. In addition, IPCC is easily automated from a central control room (local or remote) - something that trucks have yet to commercially achieve.   IPCC is a proven process that, with a fresh mindset, can make a significant improvement to mining operations - its safety, the impact on the environment and its costs. It maybe of interest to note that there is over 200 IPCC installations worldwide today.   This paper and presentation will assist in furthering the understanding of IPCC and its applicability.

Operating well designed and maintained surface mine haul roads is the key to minimising truck haulage costs - in itself a significant component of the total cost per tonne mined. Existing and proposed mining operations are subject to scrutiny, both from the economic and environmental perspectives. In the long run, this scrutiny returns improved efficiencies and leaner, 'greener' operations. The focus of this evolving evaluation process should and will certainly fall on haulage operations - simply by virtue of their contribution to overall cost of operations and sustainability impacts. Whilst the end result - improved efficiency and contributions to resource sustainability - is not in itself problematic, it is the route, or process followed to achieve these improvements that needs to be carefully managed. We can be guided on this journey by our understanding of how a road is designed, and, critically, the technological solutions that can contribute to a company's sustainability initiatives. This paper examines the current state of mine road design and operation, together with the economic and environmental issues associated with under-performance. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the economic and environmental contributions that technology in road design and management can deliver to sustainable operations. Utilising innovation is the key to long-term sustainability and as a means of positioning the industry for the imminent structural changes to the economy and environment, changes which are now within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.
