The thermodynamic data necessary for the quantitative treatment of Metal-NH3- H2O systems at elevated temperatures are lacking in the literature. As a result discussions of the chemical basis of high temperature processes, such as leaching and hydrogen reduction, have tended to rely on low temperature thermodynamic data. In this paper a critical review is presented of the available high temperature data for metal ammine formation in aqueous systems, and methods are suggested to enable extrapolation of elevated temperature stability constants from low temperature thermodynamic data. Predictions of the Van't Hoff Lsobar, the simple cation Correspondence Principle (whereby metal ammine complexes are treated as simple cations) and Helgeson's Electrostatic-Nonelectrostatic Model are compared with the available high temperature stability constants for nickel ammines. Up to 80 °C all three estimation methods yield results which are in agreement with experimental data. However, serious deviations occur at higher temperatures; the various models overestimate the stability constants in the order Van't Hoff Isobar > electrostatic-nonelectrostatic model > simple cation Correspondence Principle. Using the experimental nickel data as a basis, a method is presented which permits reasonable estimates to be made of the stability constants of metal ammine complexes for temperatures above 80 °C.

"The interest in the use of sensor-based particle ore sorting has increased significantly with the recent advances in the sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. This technology has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically, the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore-sorting and associated reductions in the consumption of energy, water and consumables. However, layout has a significant impact on the installed cost of a concentrator and the layout impacts from fitting an ore-sorting circuit into the concentrator plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects. These include additional crushing and screening requirement, transportation of the rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements) and effects on concentrator footprints.INRODUCTION Ore sorting has been practiced throughout history with an early report by Agricola in 1556. Metallic and non-metallic minerals were extracted from rocks by laboriously breaking them with hammers and picks and hand-picking selected material with higher grade off a table. The concept has not changed but the sorting technology has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. Ore sorting is usually a dry process in which a portion of the material is rejected based on mineral properties and/or grade. The methods used for sensing ore particles cover a large range of physical properties. A variety of sensors are available that differ on the discrimination technique that is used, which include: photometry, radiometry, conductivity, magnetism, microwave, X-ray transparency: X-ray transparency and luminescence and UV fluorescence (Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1991; Wotruba, 2006). There are two main ore sorting techniques: particle ore sorting and bulk ore sorting. According to Nadolski et al (2018), the potential for sorting is determined though analysis of grade heterogeneity within the orebody (greater heterogeneity represents more opportunity to add value to a project) at the scale of the intended sorting unit size."

Diatomaceous or infusorial earth, also called diatomite; fossil meal, or kieselguhr, is derived from the lowest form of vegetable life, the unicellular alga:. It consists of the siliceous remains of extremely minute aquatic plants, which exist in both salt and fresh water. Light i~ a prerequisite to their development. These very small particles secrete silica in much the same way that molluscs secrete lime to form their shells. The diatoms at death sink to the bottom of the body of water in which they lived, and the organic matter gradually decays and is washed away, leaving the skeletons. Thousands of years are required by this means to develop bed5 of sufficient thickness to be of commercial value. The siliceous remains vary in size according to the species, but all are very minute and, as a general rule, they can be identified only under a high-power microscope. Over one thousand types have been distinguished and named. They are all composed of a hydrous or opalescent form of silica, with silica content ranging from seventy to ninety-five per cent. Magnified, they present an attractive sight, a very fragile structure with many interstitial openings known as cells. Many of them consist of two parts, defined as valves, held together by means of a girdle. Certain species, belonging to the Pinnularia family appear as a long comb, in half longitudinal section. The spaces between the teeth are the cells. This particular genus is very common in Nova Scotian deposits.

"Geological and technical problems are often considered the most important ones affecting new mining projects. Typical problems and likely causes are reviewed based on current Quality Management and Continuous Improvement (QMCI) perspectives, giving particular attention to the work of W.E. Deming. As the “system approach” is an essential part of these policies, its characteristics are described with particular attention given to cultural- behavioural, organizational and systembased constraints described by J. Gharajedaghi. Given that poor communication and interaction among geologists, mineral processors and mining engineers/operators can seriously affect the adequacy of tests, project planning and execution, and mine profitability, these interrelated processes within the mining systems are analyzed and modelled. The impacts on models and simulations of ignoring typical data, information and knowledge uncertainties are addressed. Adapting W.E. Deming’s Fourteen Points, System of Profound Knowledge and insistence on leadership, and the analysis of mining system constraints, will allow the effective QMCI approach required to reduce geological and technical risks. Whenever we achieve this goal, we will be in a better position to overcome environment-, market-, finance- and community-related problems, achieve higher company and industry profitability as well as more sustained development. RÉSUMÉLes problèmes géologiques et techniques sont souvent considérés les plus importants parmi ceux qui affectent les nouveaux projets miniers. Des problèmes typiques et leur causes sont étudiés dans la perspective de gestion de la qualité et d’amélioration continue (GQAC), en relation avec les travaux de W.E. Deming. Comme l’approche système est au centre de ces méthodes, ses caractéristiques sont décrites en donnant une attention particulière aux contraintes de types culturel-comportemental, organisationnel, et systémique décrites par J. Gharajedaghi. Compte-tenu que les lacunes dans les communications et les interactions entre géologues, minéralurgistes, et ingénieurs/opérateurs miniers peuvent affecter sérieusement la validité des essais, de la planification et de l’exécution des projets ainsi que la rentabilité des exploitations, ces processus connexes font l’objet d’analyse et de modélisation. Les impacts sur les modèles et les simulations de l’incertitude des données, informations et connaissances sont soulignés. En adaptant au système minier les Quatorze Obligations et le Système de connaissance approfondie de W.E. Deming ainsi que l’analyse des trois types de contraintes, nous pourrons développer une approche GQAC permettant de réduire les risques géologiques et techniques des projets miniers et des exploitations. The recent trend in underground mine developments is ?big is better?. This is most certainly evident in the mine shaft and the conveyances that operate within its compartments. Today, there are several new installations requiring mine cages that can transport up to 170 passengers. The technology in mine hoisting is advancing to address a combination of higher capacity requirements, deeper hoisting depths and faster winding rates, however, some areas of the hoist plant have not changed for the past fifty years. The most notable of these areas is the shaft compartment guide string and the conveyance mounted safety arrest mechanism. The technology in use today for the protection of passengers in a shaft conveyance from a hoist rope severance incident, remains conceptually unchanged from Elisha Otis? design of 1850. The actual retardation components, the safety dogs, have taken on several forms since Elisha?s invention with the last major design change occurring in the late 1940?s. The arrest of a free falling shaft conveyance requires that the shaft guides withstand the energy imparted on them by the safety dogs. There are some very real limitations presented by the use of wood for this application. The new hoisting era will most certainly continue to demand larger capacity equipment but also, an increased awareness toward safety.

Carbonaceous matter (c-matter) in sulphide ores can adversely affect the process of gold recovery during cyanidation due to its ability to adsorb, or preg-rob, gold from a cyanide leach solution. This paper describes a standardized procedure for characterization of c-matter in an ore sample providing detailed information on its composition, maturity and preg-robbing capacity. The procedure utilizes the following complementary analytical techniques in conjunction with several chemical tests and assays: SEM/EDX Raman spectroscopy and TOF-SIMS. Results of the test can be used as a predictive tool to estimate the impact the c-matter will have on the gold recovery process. A comparison between predicted preg-robbing behaviour and cyanidation test results are presented.

"At first glance, the activities related to mining and mineral exploration appear to be local or domestic, rather than international, in nature. Minerals, as corporeal or tangible property, form an integral part of the land in which they are found until extracted and exploited commercially. Even in the latter phase, the tangible nature of minerals gives the impression that the law governing the commercialization of minerals is the law of their situs at any given time. The nature of minerals appears to negate the international aspect of mineral enterprises.The fundamental flaw in the above analysis is its focus upon the nature of minerals, rather than the role of persons in mineral enterprises. The high costs of mineral exploration and commercialization invariably require the involvement of international consortiums or joint ventures. Governments may not have access to the funds necessary to exploit the mineral resources that they control. Local or domestic enterprises may not have sufficient expertise for mineral exploration. Further, markets for various types of minerals are far from localized or static. For these and other reasons, the tangible and localized nature of minerals belies the fundamentally international nature of mineral exploration and commercialization."

"Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. The exothermic behavior of the intermetallic reactions inside an Al-Mn metallic powder compact and its assimilation fundamentals in molten aluminum were examined. In this study cylindrical compacts were manufactured and tested. The experimental work involved simultaneous temperature measurements of three thermocouples as well as detection of the apparent weight of the cylindrical specimen during its assimilation in liquid aluminum. The details of the intermetallic reactions prior to the compact complete disintegration were investigated by microscopically studying the morphology and local composition in a partially reacted compact. The variation of manganese concentration in the melt was determined by chemically analyzing the samples taken from the molten aluminum at specific time intervals. The exothermic reaction increases the compact's temperature above that of the liquid aluminum. In tandem with this exothermic reaction, the compact is suffering a swelling action. This swelling action disintegrates the cylindrical specimen, which is assimilated into the liquid aluminum. The intermetallic reactions proceed in a stepwise manner. Both the bath temperature and the compact composition impact on the exothermicity of the intermetallic reactions. However, when the amount of Mn in the compact is greater than 75-wt%, the maximum centerline temperature rise is slightly reduced as Mn amount increases.

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

Roasting of molybdenite concentrate is an important stage in the production of commercial molybdenum trioxide. The oxidation kinetic and mechanism of molybdenum sulfide concentrates from two plants were investigated at temperatures from 444 °C to 640°C. The rate of reaction was determined for thin layer samples in a muffle furnace at controlled temperatures, oxygen excess and removal of sulfur dioxide. For both concentrates the rate of reaction is fairly slow at temperatures below 500°C and remains fairly constant from 540 to 600 °C. It was observed that the concentrate from the first plant presents a tendency for sintering or glazing at temperatures above 620°C, whereas the same phenomena was observed at 20 or 30 °C higher temperature for the second concentrate. A kinetic model of two reactions, involving the formation of Mo02 as intermediate oxide for the production of Mo03 is proposed and activation energies of 23.0 and 20.8 kJ/mol for the first and second reaction were calculated for temperatures between 520 °C to 600 °C. These low values of activation energies indicate that the overall rate of oxidation is controlled by mass transfer, particularly in a porous layer of oxides. Therefore, the renewal of the surface by mixing and motion of the concentrate layer is of great importance. Sublimation of Mo03 becomes significant for temperatures above 650 °C.

"Terrestrial photogrammetry has been used for many years to build three-dimensional pictures for analytical purposes. Photographs can include images from open pit mine walls, ground topography, mine buildings infrastructure or accident scenes. Analysis and co-ordinate estimation in early photogrammetric systems demanded the use of specialized and costly optical-mechanical stereocomparators. Few of these instruments could be interfaced with computers to provide databases, and all required trained personnel with good perspective vision to collect data.Digital photogrammetric software has replaced these older systems, and the digital video plotter (DVP) is a simple computerized system utilizing readily available PCs to quickly produce a stereoscopic model of any scene where an area of overlap exists in photographs taken from two different locations. Specialized cameras providing reference marks or grids on the photographs are still necessary for detailed analysis in three dimensions.This paper describes the application of DVP to the three-dimensional analysis of strike, dip and location of dominant fracture planes visible on an open pit wall slope, and the intersection of planar features which might reduce wall stability. Where reference survey points cannot be provided because access by personnel to the photographic scene is impossible for safety reasons, normal case terrestrial photogrammetry can provide the necessary control points for more complex aerial photogrammetry geometries.DVP recreates the geometry existing at the moment photographs are taken, providing the user with the ability to safely recreate, compare and analyze the structures determining the stability of open pit wall slopes."

An adaptive approach to control the deformation in tube hydroforming process is presented. This requires: the use of an existing non-linear FE software (ABAQUS) that incorporates a user material model (VUMAT), the development and implementation of an adaptive control strategy to coordinate the internal pressure and the axial load so as to prevent fracture and wrinkling failures (knowledge-base controller) and the application of the developed adaptive simulation approach for finding the optimal loading path required to hydroform a defect-free part with as uniform thickness distribution as possible (user's load subroutine (VDLOAD). In order to validate the approach, the case of conical hydroforming and the case of bending followed by hydroforming component is discussed.

Modern roadheaders provide a safe and cost-effective, yet very flexible way of mechanical tunnel and roadway excavation. In the last years, SANDVIK Mining and Construction has developed a NEW ROADHEADER GENERATION, which incorporates new features, allowing significant improvements of underground excavation. Partial face cutting machines such as roadheaders excavate the desired profile by means of a cutter unit mounted on a swiveling boom. This flexible method for mechanical excavation makes the roadheader suitable for a large range of profile varieties and most rock characteristics. Over 1,250 roadheaders have been delivered since the 1960s from the Zeltweg plant of Sandvik Mining and Construction, with the current products ranging from the light-duty, 130kW MR220 machine, widely used in the tunneling and coal industry to the heaviest 300kW tunneling and hardrock mining roadheaders. Roadheaders are generally used in coal mine development, salt/potash mining as well as construction and hard rock mining. This paper describes the technology behind the succesful introduction of hard rock cutting with roadheaders, and aims to offer best practise operation experiences from various hard rock cutting sites.

"This paper considers the duty cycle of an electric cable shovel and correlations with measured passive seismic responses of the underfoot oil sands material in-pit. It has been observed that the cyclic activity during operation of any shovel in the oil sands environment causes the material to deteriorate and provide a less than ideal footing for this large item of equipment, whose dead weight approaches 1500 tons with a footprint of merely 75 sq. yd. Consequences are manifested in the form of carbody and side frame cracks, and associated downtime, maintenance activity, cost, and subsequent loss of availability.The objective of these considerations, as part of the Oil sands-Equipment Interaction Program (OsEIP), currently a joint venture between Syncrude Canada Ltd., James Progithin International (JPi) Ltd., Caterpillar Inc., P&H MinePro and the University of Alberta, is to identify and provide feedback to the manufacturer and end user of adverse shovel-ground conditions. This would enable the manufacturer to incorporate greater knowledge into the design process and the end user to direct operations in an enhanced proactive maintenance stance."

"At the 95th CIM Annual General Meeting in Calgary, 1993, a paper entitled “Progress on Futuristic Mining Technologies” was presented(Matthews and Sarin), in which they outlined the goal of continuous excavation of hard rock and some of the technologies being developed to achieve it. The subject continues to be featured in periodic reviews and articles in the literature, (Gertsch, 1994; E&MJ, 1995). Matthews and Sarin note the considerable success of the development and application of continuous mining technologies in the soft rock under-ground mining industry, especially those in coal and potash, with major benefit to overall production, productivity and economic viability. It is the belief that similar achievements can be realised in the underground hard rock mining which continues to drive the development of hardrock continuous mining technology.This overview has been prepared specifically for this issue of the CIM Bulletin. It attempts to tie together current advancements in continuous mining in soft rock (where remote control and automation are already well established) with the background and status of development in hard rock continuous mining. Following a brief review of key factors and machine types, soft rock aspects are discussed, then a more detailed review is given of hard rock technology, with particular reference to Canada’s HRDK Mining Research Ltd. and their key role.The mining industry has long been at the forefront of technology development, for example, the application of the early steam engine to reach reserves at greater depth for dewatering mines in the industrial revolution. By necessity, the individual characteristics of seams and orebodies dictate the mining method, continually presenting mining engineers with new challenges. One of these is the extraction process itself and the goal of replacement of the drill-blast-muck cycle by continuous excavation. Very soft rocks have always been mineable using some form of cutting, even with primative tools. However, as the challenge has been taken up, technologies have evolved to steadily increase the hardness of rock that can be mechanically excavated. "A number of successful proof-of-concept projects have been carried out to replace conventional power application, such as diesel and rechargeable batteries, in underground mine vehicles. This has led to the development and testing of the world’s first fuel cell production vehicle, a mine locomotive. A fuel cell loader is being built and tested.This paper provides an insight into other projects that are being carried out. Some are related to further underground applications, and some to further research, such as refueling options, power plant durability, and vehicle automation.Also outlined is an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation."
