The main elements of Canada's energy strategy for the period 1977-1990, with particular reference to the role of energy conservation, are discussed, leading in to the development of the national energy conservation program.

This paper examines the effect of cation type (i.e. NH4+, Na+ and K+) and anion type (i.e. SO42- and C1-) on the extraction of nickel during the pressure acid leaching of a Western Australian laterite ore. The results are compared with testwork conducted with other Western Australian nickel laterite ores and the possible process implications of adding an additive to a plant autoclave are considered. Addition of either (NH4)2SO4, Na2SO4 or K2SO4 increased both the nickel extraction and the acid consumption, provided that the level of additive was not too great. For example, the nickel extraction of 93% increased to above 96% in the presence of additives, but decreased to 94% when, for example, NH4 levels increased from 7 kg/t ore to 21 kg/t ore. The relative stability of the jarosite species formed when additives were present influenced the amount of jarosite in the residue and, hence, both the final free acidity and overall nickel extraction. The use of Cl- versus SO42- salts as additives had little effect on overall nickel extraction or overall free acid values, although the presence of SO42- additives appeared to enhance nickel extraction kinetics over the first 60 minutes of the reaction. In contrast, manganese extraction was enhanced by the presence of Cl- additives.

A supply chain encompasses all the activities associated with the flow and transformation of goods from the raw materials stage(extraction), through to the end user. Supply chain management (SCM) is the integration of these activities through improved supply chain relationship, to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage and it rests on its ability to provide the right goods and services when and where needed. The supply chain is the vital component of any company?s value chain which links the operating processes to its supplier and customer. The globalization of business promises to offer new and unique challenges for the supply chain competencies of most firms. Challenges will also increase in the environmental aspects of supply chain often referred to as ?Green Issues?. The supply chain of mining industry comprises of the flow of material and information from the mine site, to processing and loading for transport, to the customer. However, due to recent changing environmental requirements affecting mining and mineral processing operations, increasing attention is given to developing environmental management (EM) strategies for the mineral supply chain. This paper focuses on: ? Environmental factors leading to the development of an extended environmental supply chain, ? Additional challenges presented by the extension, ? Performance measures appropriate for the extended supply chain, ? Developing a general procedure towards achieving and maintaining the green supply chain.

"The McLaughlin Mine owned by Homestake Mining Company is located 70 miles northeast of San Francisco in California's coastal range. The mine began operations in February of 1985. The mill currently processes 3,000 short-ton per day of sulfide ore that has an average grade of 0.15 ounces of gold per ton, plus another 3,000 tons per day in a newly completed oxide circuit. Annual production from the mine totals over 200,000 ounces.The sulfide ore extraction process involves three basic steps, grinding, oxidation of sulfide minerals in an autoclave, and cyanide leaching for recovery of gold in a carbon-in-pulp circuit. This process, which incorporates a new technology where oxidation of sulfide minerals is conducted prior to cyanide leaching to facilitate gold recovery, was successful from start-up. However, limitation in the grinding mills initially limited sulfide tonnage throughput.This paper discusses modifications made in the grinding circuit, both mechanical and operational, to resolve it deficiency. The SAG mill, in particular, was unable to achieve design tonnage initially and proved to be most troublesome. Complications occurred due to the hardness and variability of ore being processed, short component life, and a lifter /liner arrangement that had to be tailored to the particular circumstances at McLaughlin. IntroductionHomestake Mining Company's McLaughlin Mill, located in northern California, was designed to process a refractory gold ore at a rate of 3,000 tpd to render the ore amenable to cyanidation. Seven years transpired between discovery of the near-surface ore body in 1978 and the February, 1985 plant start-up. Development of the McLaughlin mill and open pit gold mine hinged on the use of autoclave technology to achieve design recoveries."

Large-scale industrial production of pipe began with longitudinal hot pressure welding of wrought iron by passage of skelp (narrow strip with beveled edges) through a die or bell that curled it about a longitudinal axis until the edges were forced together. Such small to medium tubes could be reduced by rolling or drawing; with threaded connections, they were excellent for distribution of clean water and of illuminating gas for street, home and industrial lighting. Although steel lacks the fluxing slag for pressure welding it has hot strength similar to iron; hot-pressure bell welding was advantageously transferred to steel in long coiled strip with 50% higher cold strength. For pipe without weld-line defects, hot cupping followed by Pilger mill rolling produced tubing that revolutionized bicycle quality and high-pressure service for boilers and chemical processing. Mannesman hot rotary piercing produced long thick walled tube that permitted reduction or expansion by rolling to provide pipe sections up to 60 cm diameter and 12 m long. During 1910 - 1940, oil and gas pipeline technologies, notably welding evolved markedly as they proliferated in the United States, in response to far-flung petroleum fields, expanding industry consumption and the automobile revolution. In the Second World War combat pipelines were laid rapidly, such as: the Canol line through the Yukon to Alaska, and fuel supply lines across the channel and through liberated France. Perfection of welding techniques for both longitudinal and spiral weld large diameter pipe in combination with controlled-rolling of micro-alloyed steels made possible reliable Arctic pipelines. The development of pipe production and utilization in Canada is recounted. The fabrication techniques and metallurgical controls are explained.

The success of the minimization of blast induced-damage at Barrick?s Pierina Mine in Peru is the result of an effective working relationship between Mine Operations and the Geotechnical Services Department. A detailed design criteria manual is used to match the blast plan to the site?s varying rock types and slope designs. The Geotechnical Services Department has further developed a comprehensive pre- and post-blast checklist that is critical to the drilling and blasting process as it pertains to wall stability. Wall control blasts are evaluated with quality assurance field checks, vibration monitoring and frequency control, video assisted performance quantification and post excavation face profiling. These detailed observations are compiled and summarized in a blast performance evaluation that is considered to be an ?Industry Best Practice?. The information and detail provided by each performance summary allows accurate blast analysis and effective design refinement.

"This paper presents an objective model for the estimation of fire risk potential of an underground coal mine panel by the bord-and-pillar method of mining where extraction is carried out by depillaring with caving. The fire risk rating procedure for the estimation of fire risk potential involved in the panel is described in detail. The model developed thereof is tested with the field data collected from different collieries across the country along with the laboratory data for critical assessment of fitness of the model. Some results showing the validity of the model are also cited here. Introduction The occurrence of fire in underground coal mine panels is quite common in India and elsewhere. These fires cause extensive loss of resources.Although substantial work has already been done by different research organizations, the problem has not been fully eliminated.The causes of panel fires depend not only on the spontaneous heating susceptibility of coal, but also on the extraneous conditions created in the panel due to the mining operations. From the studies done so far by various organizations, it is apparent that two types of parameters associated with spontaneous heating of a coal mine panel exist: intrinsic and extrinsic. Parameters related to the nature of coal, i.e., its physicochemical characteristics, petrographic distribution and mineral make-up are intrinsic, while the extrinsic parameters are related to the atmospheric, geological and mining conditions such as scope of leakage of air into the panel, wetness of mines, heat dissipation capacity of the panel, gassiness of seam, geological disturbances, method of extraction, size of panel, etc.Banerjee (1982) identified twenty-two mine parameters such as spontaneous heating susceptibility of coal, method of mining, geological disturbances, quality of overburden, degree of consolidation of coal mass, scope of accumulation of coal fines, etc. that can influence spontaneous heating in underground mines. He used the terms “high” and “low” for fire risk rating of each of these parameters. Since this approach is oversimplified, it can not determine the exact fire risk potential of an underground working."

Recently, the great amount of funds has been invested in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and house of subsidence area of coal mine and mine reclamation. This is a benevolent and popular work, which is highly praised. However, because of complicated collapse area problems in China, especially the less integrated control research in the collapse area of metal mine, and the technological weakness, how to effectively control the subsidence area, restore landscape and ecological environment, and utilize the abandoned mine land, are major issue related to the mining area of sustainable development. The research situation about the formation of metal mine collapse area at home and abroad is reviewed, and then the effect of the collapse area on the mine safety and ecological environment, the existing technical problems and development direction are analyzed. Lastly, the technical measures of the collapse area control and cooperative underground mining is put forward.

"The measurement and evaluation of the noise emanating from an ST4A scooptram in an underground stope under a simulated work cycle, and under three conditions of after-treatment systems is covered.These include scooptram without muffler or filler (bare engine), an in-line small filter, compared to a larger-filter, and the larger filter with an in-line muffler in series with fume diluter, which were tested under three engine operating conditions-IDLE, wide open throttle (W. 0. T.), and working condition. This is load, short haul and dump operation.The results showed an attenuation of the scooptram at work of 8 to 15 dBA, 16 cm from the exhaust pipe of the machine, to 4.8 dBA at the operator's ear. Recommendations are made to increase the attenuation at the operator 's ear by additional improvement in design of the fume diluter.IntroductionIn current mining operations, the diesel engine provides a safe, efficient and highly mobile source of power. In the major underground mine s in Canada the most common types of diesel equipment are load-haul-dump (LHD) machines and ore trucks. In general, there is a tendency to use high horsepower, diesel LHD machines in mines to achieve maximum productivity. The increased use of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines has shown no cause pressure levels were measured at the exhaust and outlet pipe. Also, while measuring the octave band and A-weighted sound pressure levels, the operator's position was also measured."

"The Mining Information Technology User Group considers information to be a strategic enabler to improved business performance in mining. This ad hoc group has been meeting since 2000 to share knowledge and leverage their efforts in effectively using IT in mining. In this paper, core issues to mining IT are reviewed, along with initiatives to engage industry professionals and decision-makers in the potential for improved use of information in their operations. Relevance of IT to Canadian MiningMining operations always drive to improve their performance, and so far they have succeeded by using different technologies. While economies of scale have come in fragmentation and material handling, and energy usage has improved through conservation and design of integrated mineral processing plants, these systems have the net result of tightening operational constraints, through reduced excess capacity. There are higher opportunity costs of lost production when integrated, large-scale systems are operating in a sub-optimal way.The problem is that it is profoundly difficult to run a mine in an optimal way. Optimization requires a defined objective function (e.g., profit), which is hard to pose, let alone solve, because so many inter-related aspects of an operation affect the bottom line. Even for a small, well-defined process state, it is difficult to measure all the pertinent information with sufficient accuracy to ensure that the system is performing well in real time.The art of mining remains making good decisions with uncertainty: in the orebody delineation; in the allocation of resources; in the efficiency of the operation; in the reliability of components and systems; and in responding to the downstream market. As well, individual decision-makers need to know how their decisions affect other processes and systems, so that improvements in one part of an operation do not result in such degraded performance in the rest of the plant that overall profitability goes down."

The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd. , is a $2.3 billion copper/zinc project, located in the Ancash Department in Perú. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70,000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 Km. long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23-year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world. This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28th, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14th, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo. The construction stage of the project generated 8,000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10,000 employees, and 30,000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals; around 30% of whom came from the department of Ancash where the deposit is located. Approximately 5,800 indirect jobs will be generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina will increase the Peruvian mining exports by 30% and Peruvian GDP by 1.4% within its first year of full operation in 2002. Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented a successful approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company?s environmental program. Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues, and as a result, has set new standards in Perú for environmental and community management, and sustainable development.

Today road construction sites utilize more and more information modeling in design phases as well as model based 3-D machine control systems in site operations. For main contractor, the management and control of all the site operations is a demanding task including also many challenges created by continuously developing new technology. In the paper, the main requirements for successful dynamic site management are introduced. The dynamic management means real-time possibilities for information acquiring, transfer and further utilization of the information in the management. An integration model to expand the current way of management and the utilization of present 3-D machine control systems is introduced. Different practical test results using two new different dynamic management systems are presented and evaluated. The first experiments and the results have been provided using the prototype system developed in a research project called DigiINFRA by the University of Oulu and Technical Research Center of Finland. Also, there have been tested a new commercial management system developed recently in Finland. In the conclusion, an expectation for the next generation for more dynamic road construction management methods is concluded.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem that preoccupies the Canadian mining industry. Considerable amounts of money are spent every year in an effort to prevent or reduce the acid mine drainage phenomenon. AMD occurs when sulphide minerals (e.g., pyrite) contained in rock are exposed to air and water and subsequently oxidize to produce low pH water. This acid effluent has the potential to mobilize any heavy metals contained in the rock. Coating the sulphide minerals with silicates is a new promising technology to reduce AMD. Pyrite is treated with a solution containing H2O2, sodium silicate and a buffering agent. H2O2 oxidizes a small part of pyrite producing ferric iron (Fe3+) ions. These ions subsequently react with the silicate ions to produce ferric hydroxide-silica that precipitates on the pyrite surface producing a passive coating. This silicate coating can protect the grains of pyrite from oxidation. This paper presents a series of experiments that confirm that silicate coating can considerably reduce AMD.

"Since 1975, the Aluminium Pechiney Research Centre at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (LRF) has been concentrating its efforts on designing, testing and perfecting the Aluminium Pechiney point-fed prebaked reduction cell.In 1979, the AP18 cell (180 kA) was industrially launched with the construction and start-up of the F line in Saint-Jean. The following generation, the AP30 (300 kA), with prototypes started in 1981, was launched in 1986 on the Saint-Jean G line. Along with cell design, efficient process control systems were developed to pilot alumina feeding and bath composition. Together, these pots are currently producing 4.6 Mt of aluminum, i.e., 18% of the world’s overall yearly production.In 1989, the research centre faced a new challenge: to push the limits for the size of a reduction cell to further improve the profitability of Greenfield projects. This new generation development was also the opportunity for a significant redesign of the Aluminium Pechiney electrolysis information system.With a track record of ten years of semiindustrial operation with three prototypes, the AP50 technology is now ready for industrial implementation and enables a significant breakthrough to be made in terms of return on investment of a Greenfield smelter."

"Abstract - Diamond-drill hole DDH-B357, located 1.5 km north of the Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb- Cu-Ag volcanic-sediment-hosted massive sulfide (VSHMS) deposit, intersects three exhalative horizons within variably altered felsic volcanic rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls and Flat Landing Brook formations. These three petrographically indistinguishable iron formation intervals (Fe2O3T = 21.4 wt.%) likely represent cogenetic hydrothermal sedimentary units because they display a common geochemical signature: Fe2O3T = 42.9 ± 10.5 wt.%, MnO = 5.4 ± 3.1 wt.%, elevated base metal values (Zn+Pb = 1999 ± 1091 ppm), strong enrichment in additional exhalative components (CaO = 5.3 ± 3.9 wt.%; P2O5 = 1.43 ± 1.00 wt.%), oxidized signature (Fe/Mn = 10 ± 6), as well as a common immobile element signature (Zr/TiO2 = 0.025 ± 0.007) representative of a pelagic source. The calc-alkaline to transitional host volcanic rocks can be discriminated by Zr/TiO2, and to a lesser extent by Th/Nb: Nepisiguit Falls Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.053 ± 0.004, Th/Nb = 1.08 ± 0.37; Flat Landing Brook Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.107 ± 0.043, Th/Nb = 0.86 ± 0.17. A symmetrical repetition of the footwall-iron formation-hanging wall stratigraphic sequence is observed in DDH-B357, with distinct felsic volcanic rock domains separated by the three iron formations. This is best explained by parasitic F2 folds on the west flank of the south-plunging Brunswick antiform, similar to the fold closures known to host massive sulfide accumulations in the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 mines. Iron formation geochemistry and felsic volcanic rock chemostratigraphy from drill core sampling can provide an effective mineral exploration tool for the structurally complex rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp. La meilleure explication est que le flanc ouest de l’anticlinal Brunswick à plongée sud est affecté par des plis parasites F2, similaires aux zones de charnière contenant les sulfures massifs des mines Brunswick No. 6 et No. 12. Barrick has had 6 autoclaves in operation at the Goldstrike Mine, North of Carlin Nevada, since 1993. The 6 autoclaves operate in parallel, processing slurry of gold ore. The gold in the ore is predominantly associated with, and encapsulated by, sulphide minerals. It is necessary to oxidize at least 90% of the sulphide mineral before the gold can be concentrated using a cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. Sulphide oxidation chemical reactions occurring in the autoclaves are exothermic; however, the sulphide content in the ore is not high enough to operate the autoclaves in an auto-thermal mode. Heat from steam is added to the first 2 of 5 autoclave compartments to initiate the sulphide oxidation reactions. The steam used to heat the autoclaves is supplied by three boilers, which are fuelled with propane gas. The completion of a few operations and maintenance projects in the last 2 years has resulted in a 50% reduction in propane energy requirements. The autoclave operating temperatures were minimized. Excess oxygen addition was held as low as possible. The material of construction for the compartment walls inside the autoclaves was changed from brick to Titanium metal. And, the speed of the autoclave slurry agitators was increased. All of these activities had an impact on the propane energy requirements of the autoclaves. Presented below is a description of the autoclave systems, and a discussion of how the energy needs were reduced, resulting in significant operating cost savings.

Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. This study encourages aluminium alloy industries to pursue process improvement projects on the basis of analysis on data obtained from their shop floor, hence ensuring that through this, recovery is improved and cost of poor quality is reduced.INTRODUCTION Engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986 introduced a new concept in which a set of techniques and tools are used for process improvement by controlling variations (defects). These tools and techniques are explained by an acronym DMAIC. D DEFINE the problem M MEASURE the variables in the problem A ANALYSE the variables of the problem I IMPLEMENT and verify the solution to the problem C CONTROL the solution to sustain it Most times in six-sigma approach, variations in the process that results in defects and customers’ dissatisfaction are targeted at 3.4 defects per million opportunities. There are numerous methods six sigma application use to achieve quality results and innovative strategies. Improving the quality of process through these methods helps identify and reduce variations which paves way for organisational excellence. In the present work, the effect of pH, non-ionic polyacrylamide flocculant and anionic polyphosphate on rheology and settling behaviour of colloidal TiO2 suspensions (15 ? 50 wt% solid) is investigated. Maximum particle aggregation, reflecting in the highest suspension settling rate and maximum shear yield stress was achieved at pH 7.2, the isoelectric point (iep), consistent with DLVO expectation. However, the maximum aggregation condition at the iep also resulted in the poorest suspension consolidation behaviour. Significantly enhanced consolidation was achieved for a more dispersed suspension at pH values away from the iep but at reduced settling rate. Thus, when pH alone is used to control conditions which facilitate strong interparticle attraction, a high settling behaviour which is not conducive to compact consolidation results. Improved suspension consolidation may be achieved at the iep via anionic polyphosphate addition which leads to attenuation of the strongly attractive van der Waals forces and emergence of "soft" repulsion due to weak inter-particle electro-steric forces. The weak repulsion act to lubricate particles involved in the hydrodynamic interactions which controls the compressibility of the sediment bed, allowing a compact consolidation of solids to be obtained. Alternatively, non-ionic polyacrylamide homo-polymer (Magnafloc 333) was fairly effective in flocculating titanium dioxide suspensions leading to high settling rate and acceptable pulp consolidation at the iep.

Several anomalous zones were located and drilled; one, of these proved to be of economic interest.

The MABC Education Program is an award winning education partnership with British Columbia classroom teachers that has helped over 5400 teachers with resources and other learning opportunities. Each year, thousands of students begin, and continue, to learn about our modern mineral industry as a result of this teacher-written program. The CIM network has an integral role in the future of mineral education in today?s classrooms in Canada and programs of this caliber are vital to our future. The industry needs help in raising awareness of the benefits of modern mining and teachers need help in acquiring that information.
