The paper presents a study on the oxidation of polymetallic gold ore by oxygen in an autoclave. It presents optimum parameters of autoclave leaching of sulphide refractory ore in self-generated sulphuric acid solutions aiming to get products with favourable technological characteristics from which precious and other useful metals can be recovered. A high partial oxygen pressure (1.5 MPa to 2 MPa), high leaching temperature (190°C to 200°C), pulp density 80 g/L to 240 g/L, ore fraction size 76 µm and leaching time up to 4 hours yield good results in rich ores. The full extent of copper and zinc conversion as well as a high extent of iron conversion has been achieved, while lead, gold and silver and a minor part of iron remain as a solid residue among gangue minerals.

The southeastern shores of Great Slave lake present a curious anomaly in geographical and geological exploration, in that an area so large and important, and withal so comparatively accessible, should nevertheless have remained unexplored, unmapped, and indeed almost unknown, until quite recent" times On their return from the famous journey to the mouth of the Coppermine, the band of Indians with whom he travelled led Samuel Hearne across Slave lake. He was the first white man to see that great body of water and it is rather curious that it should have been seen first from the north rather than from the south. Hearne's account of the lake is vague, and he made no attempt ?to map the part through which he travelled. About 30 years later John Franklin, on his first journey to the Arctic, crossed the lake from the mouth of the Slave river to the Yellow Knife river. Franklin's maps show all of his route in accurate detail, except that part of it which lay through Slave lake. In 1833-34, Captain, afterwards Sir George, Back made the first exploration of the eastern end of the lake. Captain Back was then on his way to the Arctic coast by way of the Great Fish river, and his Indian guides led him through Great Slave lake by the route they had followed from time immemorial. This route, partly because of its directness, and partly because of its sheltered character, lay through the great mass of islands in the middle of the lake to the Talthei narrows, and thence along the sheltered north shore with its many coves and harbours. Pere Petitot made extensive journeys in Slave lake as well as other parts of the far north.

"Occupational health programs and their role in improving the quality of working life in the mining industry are discussed. Attention is directed to some problems peculiar to the Canadian mining industry. Factors affecting program development are reviewed, as well as parameters affecting cost-benefit analyses.IntroductionThe quality of working life in the mining industry is a more important consideration than in many other industrial environments because of the very nature of the undertaking. It was a strange paradox of the 1960s that preventive maintenance programs for machinery and equipment were well accepted, whereas the concept of ""preventive people medicine"" was basically ignored. Fortunately, there seems to be a swing toward the development of occupational health programs in many sectors of the business community; however, there is a noticeable lack of consistency and uniformity for thought among the members of the mining industry. The blame for this lack o f progress in the occupational field cannot be entirely attributed to the industry, but must also rest with (for the most part) apathetic and inadequately trained physicians. This latter problem is slowly improving with the growing recognition that a well-planned and executed occupational health program may improve the quality of working life for mining employees and their families.There are a number of factors which relate to occupational health in mining, and its effect on working life quality. Included among these are:1. Community isolation.2. High accident risks.3. Occupational disease risks.4. Production demands and the state of the economy.5. Government regulatory requirements.6. Travel demands.These, and others, reflect on all levels of the mining industry. To examine how these factors can be moderated by an occupational health program, it is necessary to first review the rationale for such a program and some of the costs related to it."

The Star-Waddy Lakes area lies withjn the northeasterly-trending early- to mjd-Proterozoic volcanoseilimentary-pl utoruc belt referred to as the La Range Domllin. In the area investigated the domajn is composed of the Central Metavolcaruc Belt which is bordered by metasedimentary belts of the Crew Lake and MacLean Lake Belts to the northwest and southeast respectively. The boundaries between the Central Metavolcanic Belt and the flanking belts are generally marked by prominent zones of shearing. The volcanosed imentary succession is intruded by a variety of ultramafic to felsic plutons which, on the basis of lithology, field relations and geochronology, can be broadly subdivided into three groups or episodes. These are: a) an 'early' (ea. 1866 Ma), possibly subvolcanic, episode marked by composite intrusions ranging from gabbro-diorite to granite, b) an 'intermediate' (ea. 1854 Ma) plutonic event distinguished by more homogeneous felsic intru ions ; and c) a 'later' (ea. 1835 Ma) event characterized by leucocratic quartz-rich grani te intrusions. The La Range Domain has undergone polyphase deformation with a strongly developed northeast-trending structural grain. Large scale folding is manjfested by large regional sy nforms, arcuate and triangular patterns associated with many of the plutons and by tight to isoclinal folds within the adjacent metasedimentary belts. Inhomogeneous strain characterizes much of the Star-Waddy Lakes area. With strain gradients being typically very steep, zones of high strain consisting of zones of extreme extensional fabrics, discrete shearing, as well as broader zones of cataclasis and structural slicing, are often juxtaposed with areas of relatively minimal deformation . Dilation structures tend to favour these zones of highly contrasting strain. Late, brittle fractures, faults and shear zones are widespread and appear to be particularly important as loci for gold mineralization. Metan1orphic mineral assemblages indicate that upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies conditions were attained. Geological and geochenucal evidence indicates that the Central Metavolcanic Belt evolved in an island arc environment. Metavolcanic rocks from both the Waddy and Star Lakes areas display similar characteristics on variation diagrams (e.g. AFM and the Jensen cation plot) in that the dominant trend is calc-alkaline with some basic to intermediate types having a mildly tholeiitic character. A few samples from the southern end of Lower Waddy lake display komatiitic to basaltic-komatiitic afl'injties. The relatively immobile minor and trace elements (e.g. Ti , Zr, Nb, Y, Cr) provide reliable characterization of the metavolcanics, particularly of the basalts, which have highly distinctive trace element properties. Geochemical patterns for the basalts are similar to those for modem volcanic arc basalts. Low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7017 - 0.7019) are consistent with a subduction-related origin for the volcanics. The major plutons have chemical properties typical of volcanic arc granites and are largely calc-alkaline in character, showing little chemical variation from the volcanics.

Metallurgical vessel linings are multilayered, consisting of refractory bodies, insulation materials, joints, and additional space to control for thermal expansion. A unique biaxial hot testing press (BHTP) was installed at the RHI Refractories Technology Center Leoben, Austria to enable the three-dimensional behaviour of complex vessel lining segments to be investigated under simulated service conditions. Using the BHTP, the heat up and thermo-mechanical behaviour of magnesia chromite brick lining segments with and without mortar filled joints were examined. The results obtained during the initial heat up provided validation of CFD modelling of the lining system. In addition, after the heat up and under steady state conditions, the lining behaviour during deformation-controlled compression and relaxation was examined. These analyses generated important data regarding the stiffness, joint compressibility, and brick damage of the lining segments after cyclic loading and unloading as well as the benefits of using mortar joints in the lining. These investigations were performed in collaboration with the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Secondary Metallurgy of Nonferrous Metals, University of Leoben, Austria. The BHTP has been operational since November 2004 and is providing information regarding the thermo-mechanical behaviour of different lining segments.

A Sievert ' technique was used. The few determinations made on 10 per cent and 20 per cent V alloys did not show any deviations from Sieverts' law up to I>N2 = 1 atmosphere. The same held true for alloys of 0.2 per cent Ti. Nitrogen absorptions in Fe-Ti alloys, containing from 0.50 to 0.77 per cent Ti at 1,600°C, follow Sieverts' law at low PN2 values, but, due to the formation of a delta titanium nitride phase, deviate from this law beyond critical values of PN2? There is evidence that this phase is Ti1.1N. "Inertia vibration crusher is a kind of vibration equipment which crushes ore by vibration. When the inertia vibration crusher works, ore between the two moving jaws is subjected to the high frequency contact force, which is produced by the two moving jaws with high frequency synchronous reciprocating motion. The synchronous motion of the two moving jaws depends on the self-synchronous feature of the inertia vibration crusher. To study the self-synchronous feature of the equipment, the dynamic model was established, in which relative parameters were taken into consideration. The kinematic coupling relations of the assemblies are discussed, and appropriate calculation method is chosen to solve the vibrating differential equation. Whether the two vibration exciter can realize synchronous operation depends on the ability of the vibration system's capture moment. Results show that though the two rotors’ motors and damping coefficients are different, and two jaws’ damping and stiffness coefficients are also different, as angular velocities of the two unbalanced rotors reach a certain value, the vibrating system can be stable. Their angular velocities tend to be equal, and the swings of the two moving jaws can be the same. The horizontal vibration and swing of the frame are large in a few seconds after starting the machine. When the system runs stably, the horizontal vibration and swing vanish, and the vertical vibration is stable. The study and its results can provide reference for the optimization design and parameter setting of inertia vibration crusher and related vibratory equipments.INTRODUCTIONMaterials can be easily broken by using the inertia force of the vibration exciter, which can effectively realize the selective crushing, reducing excessive combinations and the energy consumption, as introduced by Zhang in 2005. The initial micro crack between crystals in the material increases and new cracks can be manufactured because of the high frequency impact and the extrusion of the vibration crusher, so vibration crushing equipment can make it possible for any high strength brittle material to be broken theoretically. Inertia cone crusher and inertia vibration crusher have been successfully used in the treatment of metallurgical slag and construction waste, and it verifies the efficiency of vibration crushing."

Titanium and zirconium heavy minerals occur in the tailings streams from processing plants which use the hot-water extraction process for recovery of bitumen from tar sand. In a research program conducted by Syncrude Canada Limited, the crude tailings stream was upgraded to produce quality zircon and titanium mineral products. To process the tailings through conventional upgrading equipment, bitumen residues must first be removed from the mineral grains. Then, by gravity separation, fines and coarse sand grains were removed and a 71% heavy minerals concentrate was prepared which was further separated by high-tension equipment into zircon and titanium minerals concentrates. The zircon concentrate was upgraded by gravity, magnetic and high-tension cleaning to produce a high-quality 98% zircon product. The titanium minerals concentrate was separated into rutile, leucoxene and ilmenite fractions. Heavy minerals distribution in tar sand drilling core samples has been evaluated for various locations on Syncrude Lease 17, and expected annual production levels of heavy minerals have been estimated. A preliminary evaluation has been made of the potential for zircon, leucoxene and rutile production and for further upgrading of ilmenite and leucoxene to synthetic rutile for titanium dioxide pigment production.

THE Workmen's Compensation Ace defines Silicosis as "a fibrocic condition of the lungs caused by the inhalation of silica dust sufficient co produce a lessened capacity for work". This fibrocic condition muse exhibit a specific appearance in the X-ray picture of the chest-an appearance which is not characteristic of several lung conditions which can cause lessened capacity for work and which are not due co silicosis. The layman is sufficiently familiar with this subject co know chat, as far as our knowledge goes, quartz is one of the principal objectionable factors in the production of this condition. He should also know that silicosis respects neither geographical nor industrial boundaries. It is as much a factor in some industrial processes (e.g. foundry work, sandblasting) as it is in mines handling ores containing quartz. Its development co a recognizable stage is usually a matter of many years. As yet, its cure is unknown. Its prevention is possible in varying degrees. The layman should also know that the development of fibrosis may be accelerated by breathing in, or living in, any atmosphere containing dust. Few normal adults, particularly those above a certain age, have clear lungs, and fibrosis in varying degrees is noted in the farmer, the steel worker, the clerk, and many others in varied occupations. It is not restricted to miners. Medical and industrial journals, and at times the press, are crammed with data pertaining to this subject, much of which is misinformation. This is particularly true of certain !laces where the preventive and compensation measures for the good o those earning their livelihood in an industry in which silicosis may be contracted are not so far advanced as in our own Province. A great many of these publishings are alarming to the layman. They leave him with the impression that he is taking his life in his hands if he elects to work underground, particularly in a gold mine-that he has at once sold his heritage of health and chat sooner or later he will succumb to the ravages of this ailment. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually, under present conditions in Ontario mines, a very small percentage of the men employed ever become impaired by silicosis to the extent chat they must withdraw from the industry. I propose to tell you briefly something of this subject as it affects our mines.

"Experimental work has been attempted to find a useful criterion of comminution which can be determined simply in a laboratory. The suitability of the ratio of the square of tensile strength to Young's modulus, St2/E, previously derived from the theory of elasticity as a criterion of comminution, was examined measuring tensile strength, Young's modulus and critical height for drop-weight impact of five different rocks. However, satisfactory correlation between St2 /E and critical height has not been obtained, suggesting the necessity of further experimental verification of the representative value of Young's modulus of rocks. The plot of St2 vs. critical height, however, shows one-to-one correspondence, and this finding suggests that St• may be a useful criterion of impact crushing. Also, a close relationship was observed between st• and the energy index for tumbling mill grinding of •the sample rocks. It is confirmed from these findings that the quantity St• is a useful criterion of comminution of rocks, not only for impact crushing but also for tumbling mill grinding. As shown in the experimental part of this paper, the determination ol St with irregularly shaped specimens is simple."

The operation of hot stoves used for preheating the blast in the ironmaking blast furnace has a strong effect on the consumption of reductants, economic performance of and CO2 emissions from the steelmaking site. Generally, it is recommended to maintain as high blast temperature as possible, because this minimizes the rate of reductants in the blast furnace. The blast temperature is affected in a complex way by the time periods of heating and cooling of the stoves, and by the amount of gas combusted in the stoves. Furthermore, as the hot stoves show degraded performance with age, it is a non-trivial task to select optimal operation parameters for the stoves. The paper addresses this computationally by applying a one-dimensional heat-transfer model of the hot stoves for optimization of the performance of the system. The complexity and strong coupling of the decision variables is demonstrated by numerical examples, where the blast temperature is maximized under different constraints.

"ABSTRACTA brief background on in-situ testing of mine backfill, as well as pressuremeter testing is briefly described, and results from an in-situ testing on paste backfill are presented. A series of self-boring pressuremeter tests were done from the top of a backfilled stope in an underground mine. The tests were conducted along a 20-metre vertical line in the centre of the stope. Some 14 tests were performed along this depth. The instrument used was a Camkometer built by Cam Insitu, Cambridge. The instrument proved to be efficient and reliable for underground testing in a cemented paste backfill. The testing program was conducted within the planned schedule with a high success rate. The test done in this study permitted the measurement of paste backfill strength, stiffness and in-situ horizontal stress within the backfill. RésuméUn bref historique des essais in situ dans le remblai minier est présenté. L’essai pressiométrique est décrit succinctement et des résultats d’une campagne d’essai dans un remblai en pâte sont présentés. Un programme d’essais au pressiomètre auto-foreur a été réalisé à partir du sommet d’un chantier remblayé sous terre. Les essais ont été réalisés le long d’un ligne vertical d’environ 20 mètres pour un total de 14 mesures. Le Camkometer de la firme Cam Insitu de Cambridge a été utilisé. Cet instrument s’est avéré efficace et fiable pour tester le remblai en pâte cimenté sous terre. Le programme d’essai s’est déroulé à l’intérieur de l’échéancier prévu avec un taux de réussite élevé. The design of belt conveyors is a well-known procedure and related formulae can be found in any handbook dealing with materials handling. Belting and conveying equipment manufacturer's catalogues and design manuals offer a wide range of detailed information which can be applied to most of our conveying problems. The aim of this paper, however, is to investigate the design of a specific type of belt conveyor, namely the long horizontal, or nearly horizontal, type. (The undulating type, with moderate lifts and drops, can also be included in this category.) Most of the long overland conveyors carrying ore from pit to processing plant, or those carrying over-burden to the disposal area, fit this description. A critical appraisal will show that reasonably accurate results can be obtained when tl1e familiar horse-power formulae are applied to this type of conveyor. The progress and new developments in the design of belt conveyors, which have resulted from the extensive research done in the past decade, will also be explored.

"The Port Radium leaching plant of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, produces 450 t./d. of sulphuric acid leach liquor containing l. 73 g. /I. U 308. After solvent extraction, the waste solution is discarded at 0.002 g./l. U30s for a recovery of 99.8 to 99.9 per cent. The solvent is acidified with weak sulphuric acid, loaded to 4.5 g./l. U80:1 in three-stage extraction, scrubbed with water, and stripped with soda-ash solution in single-stage stripping. Caustic removes the UaOs from the pregnant strip solution as a precipitate. The slurry is filtered, re-pulped with water, and re-filtered. The pressed precipitate at 81 to 82 per cent equivalent U30s is dried and packaged. The carbon-ate filtrate is cooled to remove sodium sulphate build-up and carbonated to convert excess caustic. Reagent consumptions are 4.1, 0.22, and 0.39 pounds per 1,000 gallons of pregnant solution for Diesel oil, amine, and alcohol, respectively. Caustic consumption averages 1.3 to 1.4 pounds per pound U3O8.Extraction and stripping is accomplished in sheet-iron mixer-settlers lined with Phenoline. Piping on both circuits is Schedule 80 polyvinyl chloride. Valves are straightway Buna N lined with American Hycar diaphagms. Extensive instrumentation ensures good metallurgy with a minimum of variations and labour. Mixing in a continuous organic medium and careful acidity control are required to minimize third-phase formations. Heating the precipitate slurry is conducive to good filtering in Perrin presses with neoprene-coated, rolled-steel sectors. Sodium sulphate is crystallized from carbonate filtrate solution by batchwise cooling to 54°F. with lake water."

Introduction The Mine Manager or Superintendent is a man faced with a difficult problem. He must direct the activities of his mine in such a manner that, over a period of time, the greatest possible profit will be realized. In this respect, a mine is no different from any other business organized for profit. What makes the mine manager's task so difficult then? The profit of a mine is determined by -among other things -the grade of ore, the market price of the metal or metals produced, and the cost to operate the mine. The mine manager cannot do much about the first two of these, but he has considerable control over the operating cost. This cost will depend in large measure on the nature of the programme on which he plans to operate his mine. This operating plan may be broad or specific, on a long-range basis or on a month to month basis. The development of the plan, however, is made very difficult by the existence of so many factors which must be considered. These may be (1) factors requiring decisions based on the best judgment and interpretation of engineering and geological information available, or (2) items which must be considered but which are largely non-controllable. To be more specific, examples of such items would be: (1).-(a) The amount and type of development work to be done in relation to amount of ore to be mined. (b) Mining methods to be followed and type of equipment to be used. © Amount of exploration diamond drilling to be done if the orebody is not clearly defined. (2).-(a) Rock type and degree of hardness. (b) Width, depth, and pitch of veins. © Amount of work requiring timbering. (d) Faults encountered. (e) Water and gas conditions met with.
