"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. THE orebodies of the Preston East Dome mine show a considerable variation in size,? shape, dip, and ground condition. They vary from small and large irregular masses being mined by shrinkage, cut-and-fill, and square set-and-fill mining methods to narrow veins being mined by open stoping. Standardization of mining operations has necessarily been difficult. This considerable variation in mining condition prompted the development of a bonus system which would give more equitable bonus payments through-out the mine than those obtained by the usually accepted methods of calculating mine bonus. PRINCIPLES ON WHICH THE SYSTEM IS BASED Under an incentive bonus system, performance (efficiency) and a price per unit of work done are inter-related. It is in the application of this? principle to working conditions .in the Preston East Dome mine that the system to be described differs from the standard methods of calculating mine bonus. It was found that the method of paying a fixed price per unit of work done, under the 'contract' system, gave satisfactory results in development, less satisfactory results in timbering, and results which were not satisfactory in stoping. Under the fixed price system, bonus payments, in timbering and stoping particularly, were very erratic and did not necessarily represent fair payment for the work done. A fixed price in development is satisfactory because the work done, and the conditions under which the work is done, are uniform. The drilling and blasting cycle is completed in one shift, the size of heading is con-trolled, and a minimum number of holes are required in order to obtain a satisfactory break. The performance possible under these conditions has been found to be confined to a fairly narrow range. By performance in development is meant the efficiency of the working crew as expressed in terms of the two variables of feet of advance per round and pounds of ex-plosives consumed per foot of advance. A change in rock formation, how-ever, may alter to a marked degree the performance possible, quite independent of the skill and energy of the working crew. The changes in working conditions that affect development performance from the standpoint of bonus calculation are usually easily apparent and are satisfactorily met by establishing several fixed prices.

Abstract - The Moss molybdenite deposit, which was mined during both world wars, is hosted in late Grenvillian granitic pegmatite dikes. These dikes are locally aplitic, and intrude the late tectonic Onslow syenite (probably correlative with the ~1090-1070 Ma Kensington suite), which is in turn intrusive into the 1170-1155 Ma Chevreuil intrusive suite of southwestern Quebec. A Re-Os model age of 1053 ± 4 Ma (8.3 ppm Re) was obtained for molybdenite from a pegmatitic veinlet within an aplitic phase of the dike. A much younger Re-Os date of 860.9 ± 9.2 Ma (6.9 ppm Re) obtained previously from a pyrrhotiteand pyrite-rich metasomatic vein might reflect Os diffusion during slow cooling of the Grenville province, because this age is consistent with K-Ar dates reported from the region. Alternatively, the similarity between these younger dates may be fortuitous, and may instead relate to sampling issues for molybdenite. The Mo-rich granitic dikes at the Moss deposit are similar to other Mo-rich A-type pegmatite-aplite granitic dike systems that formed immediately after the peak of the Ottawan orogeny (1070-1090 Ma), and possibly are more closely related to the Kensington suite than previously thought.

"Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."

"Indirect recovery and use of waste heat contained in smelter off-gas is proposed to expand regions available for year-round, on-site production of micro-algae–sourced biodiesel, a fuel that could be used in underground machinery. A dynamic model of an off-gas heat exchanger describes capture and distribution of heat into open, external, rectangular micro-algae ponds. Smelter off-gas contains sufficient energy to maintain large-scale micro-algae cultivation pond temperatures above 15°C, even with winter ambient temperatures below –15°C. Results highlight opportunities that could lie in tapping these heat resources to produce renewable biofuels on-site and sequester CO2 while leaving the industrial process unaffected.RÉSUMÉ On propose la récupération et l’utilisation indirectes de la chaleur résiduelle contenue dans les dégagements gazeux des fonderies pour développer les régions se prêtant à une production toute l’année durant et sur place de biodiesel à partir de micro-algues, carburant dont on pourrait se servir pour le matériel d’exploitation souterraine. Un modèle dynamique d’échangeur de chaleur contenue dans les dégagements gazeux décrit le captage et la distribution de la chaleur dans des bassins rectangulaires ouverts de micro-algues en extérieur. Les dégagements gazeux des fonderies contiennent suffisamment d’énergie pour maintenir les températures des grands bassins de culture de micro-algues au-delà de 15°C, même avec des températures ambiantes en hiver inférieures à –15°C. Ces résultats soulignent les possibilités que pourrait offrir l’exploitation de ces sources de chaleur pour la production de biocarburants renouvelables sur place et pour la séquestration de CO2 sans que cela n’ait d’incidence sur le procédé industriel.INTRODUCTIONMicro-algae that grow in water can efficiently convertsolar energy and carbon dioxide into biomass. This biomass can be up to 50% oils (lipids), which can be extracted and converted into biodiesel through transesterification (Demirbas, 2008). Compared to terrestrial plants that produce similar oils (e.g., jatropha, soybean, and rapeseed), micro-algae represent an order of magnitude increase in areal productivity, do not require arable land, and can be continuously harvested (Rawat, Ranjith Kumar, Mutanda, & Bux, 2013). The potential advantages through the production of biodiesel from micro-algae also include sequestration of carbon dioxide, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and the co-production of other value-added bioproducts."

"With todays economic trials and tribulations we have all become deeply engaged in costs and cost cutting in our field of mineral processing. Grinding is one of the most expensive unit operations. The cost of grinding media is the most expensive item in grinding costs. Therefore, it is only reasonable to attack the cost-cutting area by trying to reduce the consumption of media. This introduces the field of autogenous or rock-on-rock grinding.Rock-on-rock grinding is not new to us. It has been known for many decades;The South Africans used pebble grinding in the '20's for gold.Mr. B. Crocker was prompted for the same reasons to introduce pebble grinding at Lakeshore Mines in Kirkland Lake during the last war.The Buffalo Anchorite used beach pebbles in grinding prior to the war.Autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding is used quite successfully in the iron ore field. Base metals have their examples in Australia at Caba, in Africa at Komato and in Sweden at Aitik.Recently three mills in British Columbia and one in Arizona started with autogenous mills in their circuits. One was originally conceived to utilize a modified autogenous grind with a crusher in the circuit. All except the same mill had contingency plans for converting to semi-autogenous. All four mills have since converted to the semi-autogenous mode. These are Island Copper, Lornex, and Similkameen in B.C. and Pima Mining in Arizona."

The solutions to unsteady-state gas flow in a radial system have been reviewed in order to aid in the interpretation of drawdown data. It has been the practice to evaluate the time and rate conversion constants, directly or indirectly, by using reservoir data. This paper presents a method of determining these constants from drawdown data. A simplified approach to the de-termination for the various boundary conditions is presented. An example of a problem which illustrates the use of this theory appears in the appendix. Before 1950, hot working was simply deforming above the recrystallization point and gave a soft product compared to cold working. From 1960 onwards, improved testing in compression and torsion (stress, strain rate, temperature, quenching) provided valid specimens for microstructural analysis by polarized optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Indeed, TEM was essential to uncovering the hot working mechanisms because it could distinguish between cold and hot substructures (dynamic recovery) in either initial or new grains (dynamic recrystallization). Over the years, teams at Concordia, McGill and UBC obtained NSERC support for students and equipment. CANMET built up a hot forming group having capabilities from high-rate cam-plastometer compression to rolling of experimental alloy billets; this was combined with latest metallographic instruments for fundamental research. Al alloys of every class (2000, 3000, 5000, 7000, 8000) were studied to understand the effects of solutes, precipitates, dispersoids and composites. The complex flow patterns in extrusion were clarified and modeled by finite element methods. Physical simulations of rolling schedules (up to 20 passes and reductions of 98%) by torsion provided evidence of microstructure development during both the passes and the softening intervals, thus clarifying development of texture in different alloys. The reliability of mine ventilation systems is critical to normal and safe production in a mine and includes reliability of the following parts: ventilation system branch (or passage), ventilation structures, ventilation network, and the fan. Among these, the reliability of a ventilation branch may be considered the foundation of the whole ventilation system. The branch ventilation flow includes four parameters: air volume; toxic and hazardous gas concentrations; temperature, and dust concentration. The calculation model for the reliability of a branch was established based on the analysis of normal distribution of flows in any one branch. Then, the efficiency of the ventilation structures and fire risk compromising the reliability of branch was studied. The results obtained were as follows: if the air volume, toxic and hazardous gas concentrations, temperature and coal dust concentrations of the branch are within reasonable limits, set at any stable state and at the same time, then this branch is reliable.

Cell rooms of aluminium smelters have large openings in the sidewalls and in the roof. These openings provide a high ventilation rate, which removes heat and contaminants emitted by the reduction cells and thereby ensures acceptable working conditions inside the cell room. However the large openings make the airflows through the smelter building sensitive to the wind. In this study equations for the airflow through the openings of a smelter building exposed to crosswinds were developed and verified against plant measurements. The equations were then used to estimate the airflows through a two-storeyed smelter building containing VS Soderberg cells. Wind protection by wind-covers over the sidewall openings and by upwind buildings made the airflows through the building less sensitive to the wind. Physical and mathematical modelling showed that working conditions inside the wind-protected cell room would be acceptable for crosswinds at speeds up to 16 km/h. These predictions were confirmed by measurements taken in a VS Soderberg smelter.

IT IS WELL KNOWN that chrysotile asbestos from various occurrences exhibits varied physical properties and certain differences in chemical corn position, both of which conditions may have an important bearing on the industrial utilization of the fibre. The usefulness of a harsh fibre in the manufacture of asbestos cement products and of low-iron fibre for certain electrical uses are examples. It is also .possible to obtain a fibre with a texture too harsh and brittle to be of economic value. Much research into the structure of the mineral and to a lesser degree observations relating the water of combination to certain physical properties have ?been reported. This paper is an attempt to show that the pyrolysis of ?chrysotile takes place in three stages and that the conditions of pyrolysis are peculiar to the fibre and may afford some clue to the variations in physical properties of asbestos fibres which affect their utilization.

Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys are used in applications that require high resistance to wear and corrosion, hardness and low coefficient of thermal expansion, To maximize the properties of these alloys, semi-solid processing can be utilized to modify the solidification structure of the primary silicon crystals as well as to reduce microsegregation and porosity, The transformation and spheroidization of primary Si crystals by shearing in the semi-solid state are not fully understood as they precipitate in the presence of other alloy phases, The objective of the present work is the determination the rheological characteristics of A390 (Al-17%Si-4,5%Cu-0.5%Mg) alloy using a Couette type (Haake RV12) viscometer and examining the microstructural evolution during continuous cooling and isothermal shear rate experiments, The effect of shear rate, solid fraction (temperature) and morphological evolution of the silicon crystals are investigated.

A research effort has been undertaken, under WSIB sponsorship, to characterize the support capabilities of conventional and innovative spray-on lining materials for mitigating dynamic failure effects created by simulated rockbursts. Conventional spray support media, such as shotcrete and fibrecrete linings, and a variety of new spray-on lining materials (TSL?s), typically polymer-type thin coatings, were subjected to simulated rockburst influence. For baseline comparison, conventional rockbolt and boltand- mesh support products were also evaluated. Observation of lining performance was undertaken through completion of field scale support and rock detonation trials. Controlled blasting tests were conducted at the Queen?s University Explosives Laboratory to examine the effectiveness of the variety of surface coating agents for modifying dynamic rock spalling processes. All tests were performed upon largely undisturbed and homogeneous rock materials in highly repeatable fashion. Both conventional and innovative TSL-type surface lining materials were subjected to ?rockburst? exposure in rigorously-controlled blast trials. All blasts were observed seismically and photographically to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion and support liner survivability characteristics. These material comparison trials were performed to assess the relative effectiveness of a wide range of currently-available area support techniques for suppressing hazards associated with dynamic rock ejection. The results of this study validates that thin, sprayon linings may be equally as effective, and often better, than conventional support materials at mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments.

"CANMET has been operating as a Government Technology Centre for two years. Many of CANMET's programs involve long-term research and require special expertise, often available at Canadian universities. CANMET's involvement with universities ranges from research grants and contracts to exchanges of scientists and joint use of research facililies. Examples of CANMET - university cooperation in mining are presented. IntroductionIn the last two years or so CANMET has undergone a significant metamorphosis, resulting in greater emphasis on applied research to enhance Canada's industrial capability. CANMET's new mandate is reflected in the types of projects undertaken and their categorization, (Fig . I). Emphasis is being placed on two project categories: strategic R&D, to enable CANMET to serve the changing technological needs of the industry; and incrernental R&D, to serve the more immediate industry needs through modifications to existing technologies and knowledge. The balance of CANMET's e ffor t is devoted to providing Mandated and Specialized Services, and to Exploratory Research.CANMET interaction with universities can involve one of several available vehicles : contracts, research grants, exchanges of scientists , student employment and nomination of professors on CANMET's advisory council. Instances of key university technical support to CANMET mining projects are highlighted."

"The 2010/11 Canterbury earthquakes triggered many mass movements in the Port Hills including rockfalls, rock and debris avalanches, slides and slumps and associated cliff-top cracking. The most abundant mass movements with the highest risk to people and buildings were rockfalls and rock/debris avalanches. Over 100 residential homes were impacted by landslides, leading to the evacuation of several hundred residents.Volumes of rock leaving several of the larger cliffs during the earthquake sequence were determined from terrestrial laser scan change models. There were no seismically instrumented cliff sites and there was some distance between the cliffs and nearest strong-motion sites. Therefore, we synthesised free-field rock-outcrop seismograms by employing a stochastic approach controlled by source models and regional parameters derived using spectral inversion of the extensive strong motion data set. Relationships between volumes leaving cliffs during the earthquakes and site peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and Arias intensity were compared for different sites. Multiple linear regression was used to analyse the variables that best predict the volumes of debris that fell from the slopes during the main earthquakes. The best correlation between the volume of debris falling per square metre of slope face and the seismic forcing parameters was for vertical PGV. The results from the multiple linear regression incorporating slope height, inclination, PGV horizontal and PGV vertical, improved the statistical relationship.Field data and results from the 2D seismic site response assessment indicate that the following factors affect dynamic performance of the modelled cliffs: 1) cliff geology—mainly material modulus, shear strength and shear wave velocity; 2) slope geometry—ridge-scale versus site-scale effects; and 3) the temporal aspects of the earthquake shaking (i.e., single acceleration peaks of large amplitude versus multiple peaks of smaller amplitude). Model results show that amplification of shaking does not increase linearly with increasing height, but instead reflects changes in the cliff geology where material strength, modulus and shear-wave velocity contrasts lead to acceleration contrasts.These factors show that the use of well documented case histories provide the basis for more certainty in seismic landslide assessments compared to those that are only empirically based."

In 1997 a group of Canadian mining companies met to review the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and to consider future activities. They concluded (i) that Canadian industry and NRCan should fund a small secretariat in Ottawa to support technology transfer in Canada and (ii) that it was important for industry to continue the momentum of MEND on an international scale. The need for INAP (International Network for Acid Prevention) was strongly endorsed by company, university, consultant and government experts from Australia, Canada and the U.S. who were convened in Vancouver in February 1998. The initial focus was the development of a solid knowledge base covering the collective experience of INAP's members to promote the dissemination of successful practices, the identification of knowledge gaps and the formulation of effective research proposals. The sharing of information on past successes and failures alone was viewed as sufficient justification for the formation of INAP. INAP was officially launched in October 1998, and is now an effective, industry based initiative to globally coordinate research and development in the management of sulfide mine waste. Significant improvements in the management of sulfidic mine materials through knowledge sharing, research and development of technology by INAP will reduce liability associated with acid drainage. This paper will explore the international efforts and activities of INAP.

Quantitative determination of gold at sub-ppm concentrations in sulphide minerals is an important component of deportment studies for sulphide-gold deposits. Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis is preferred for this application because it rapidly and cost-effectively provides spatially resolved (<20 pm), low ppb concentration data for gold and other elements in mineral grains. Recent advances in LA-ICP-MS analysis include the development and application of elemental mapping. Raw signals from multiple line scans or lines-of-spots are deconvoluted and calibrated to generate elemental maps which provide detailed information on spatial variations of gold and other elements within and between grains.

The LaRonde ore is a Cu-Zn-Pb ore with gold (3-4 g/t) and silver (60-100 g/t). The precious metals are recovered with copper concentrate, zinc concentrate and cyanidation of zinc tails via Merrill Crowe precipitation. Subsequent to a recent mill expansion, excessive gold was reporting to zinc concentrate with a concurrent decrease in gold to copper concentrate. Owing to the higher return obtained from the metal, the mill endeavors to recover additional gold and silver to the copper concentrate and minimize the placement of precious metals to the zinc concentrate. A gold deportment study showed that the gold occurs mainly as küstelite, with a moderate amount of electrum and a minor amount of native gold. It also showed that various sulfur-based Au-and/or Ag-bearing coatings on liberated küstelite and electrum were the major mineralogical factors that caused gold and silver to report to zinc concentrate. By frequency, such coatings were observed on 70-80% of total liberated gold particles reporting to the zinc concentrate. Based on the gold deportment and the chemistry of the coatings, the collector chemistry was reviewed and a new collector was added into the circuit which resulted in a significant increase in gold and silver recovery to the copper concentrate. The information obtained from the mineralogy confirmed and guided other process optimization. In this paper, the authors will describe the process mineralogy of the LaRonde ores, and in particular, the mineralogical evidence diagnosing the problem. Reference will also be made to the rationale behind how the problem was solved, the results achieved, and future steps in optimization.

Introduction The Helen mine and the Victoria mine of Algoma Ore Properties, Limited, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, are 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, on the north shore of lake Superior. They are on the Algoma Central railway between Hawk Junction and Michipicoten Harbour. Between them, these mines have produced 10,757,113 tons of iron ore. From 1900 to 1918, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore was shipped, and from 1939 to the end of 1949, 7,933,744 tons of siderite was produced from the open-pit operations and underground development. The finished product, known as &apos;Algoma sinter&apos;, is shipped to blast furnaces both in Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 10,000 feet and has maximum width of 1,000 feet. The two siderite orebodies, known as the Helen and Victoria, are separated by two diabase dykes. The Helen orebody is 1,600 feet long with a maximum width of 250 feet and the Victoria is 1,200 feet long with a width comparable to the Helen. These orebodies are considered to be a replacement of the original rock by iron carbonate. The introduction of the iron-1bearing material probably occurred after the development of the major folded structures. The open-pit mining of siderite started in the Helen ore body in 1939 and continued until 1945. During this period, 3,853,395 tons of ore was mined. Open-pit mining started in the Victoria body in 1946 and is still being carried on. Underground development commenced in September, 1947.
