Operating CIP/CIL gold recovery plants in the arid regions of Western Australia face unique challenges due to water and ore quality issues. The presence of cations of Mg, Fe and Cu metals in water supplies and leached sulphide ores can have considerable effect on plant consumption of lime and cyanide, due to pH buffering and complexation effects. Reagent costs are critical to many of these operations. In this paper, computational modelling is used to analyse a number of process options to mitigate such issues. This requires careful consideration of the chemistry of the process system, and the ability to predict accurately the response of speciation and precipitation reactions to changing process conditions. The Mg-Fe-Cu-CN-H20 system is specifically modelled in this application. The Gibbs Free Energy Minimisation thermodynamic framework has been selected to model equilibrium phenomena. Furthermore, this approach has been extended to the process flowsheet level, incorporating multiple unit operations and recycle streams in a steady-state mass balance model. The Gibbs equilibrium composition module of HSC Chemistry software has been successfully integrated into the commercial flowsheeting package SysCAD. Consideration of the Gibbs Energy Minimisation capabilities of other flowsheeting packages has also been given. This approach has been successful in simulating the aqueous process chemistry typical of such plants. It has resulted in a predictive capability where equilibrium states respond appropriately to process changes. Potential cost savings may be identified by examining alternative process conditions to minimise overall reagent consumption.This methodology may be extended to other hydrometallurgical plants where issues of solution ideality, temperature and other equilibrium processes are sufficiently understood.

Open Pit Mining of Golden Band Resources? EP Gold Deposit Golden Band Resources Inc. (GBN:TSX-V) is Saskatchewan's newest Gold Producer. Located in the La Ronge Gold Belt of northern Saskatchewan, GBN has over 875 km2 of claims with 12 known gold deposits and 4 former producing mines. Production has begun at the Roy Lloyd Mine (Bingo Deposit), to be followed initially by our EP and Komis properties. Development of the underground infrastructure at the Roy Lloyd Mineis continuing and on schedule. Production from these deposits will feed our centrally located and 100% owned Jolu mill. We have our provincial environmental permits in place, and we have an established infrastructure including a 400 tonne-per-day mill, year-round road access, and access to grid power. Construction of the grid power line and the above ground tailings facility are now complete.

Open-cut method is most widely used for shallow utility lines installation. In urban areas, unexpected utility lines buried underground potentially turn open-cut construction into a highly risky operation, increasing the construction cost while presenting additional safety hazards. Examples include: breaking existing water main leads to flooding the downtown area; hitting an unexpected gas line causes an explosion. To prevent those accidents, the current practice is to stake out the underground utility lines before the open-cut construction based on the as-built information collected from various utility companies and government agencies. However, the as-built information is not always complete and accurate. To verify the locations of some important utility lines and protect them against damages caused by open-cut construction, new techniques and technologies are used but have their limitations in revealing underground utility lines, such as hydro vacuum method and ground penetration radars (GPR). The emerging technology of ultra-wide band (UWB) radar holds the potential to provide a cost-effective, non-destructive detection method. In this paper, a critical review of current practices and established methodologies is given. The functionality and working mechanism of UWB radar technologies are described. Application potential in open-cut construction is demonstrated by conducting lab experiments. Testing set-ups for detecting unexpected utility lines in soil along with preliminary results are presented. The effects of soil moisture content on the detection range are discussed. Research findings are summarized and constraints are discussed in conclusions.

As the search for new ore bodies drives mines to be developed at greater depths, the associated high stress environments present challenges for rock support design. Excavations in highly stressed brittle rock are often subject to large volume increases due to rock failure, a phenomenon known as rock mass bulking, which can result in significant wall convergence. Support systems need to be designed to minimize the amount of bulking and to accommodate large wall convergences. In order to design such a support system, empirical guidelines are often used to predict the amount of bulking. However, the empirical guidelines that are currently available are based on a limited number of case studies and consider few input parameters, which may result in an inaccurate bulking assessment. This paper describes methods of collecting quantitative field data at Creighton mine in Canada to better understand rock mass bulking and to further develop the empirical guidelines for bulking assessment for tunnels in highly stressed grounds. A series of field and laboratory evaluations were conducted in order to characterize the effects of a Mann+Hummel SMF-AR® diesel particulate filter (DPF) system on the aerosols and criteria gases emitted by diesel engines. This system, with a durable sintered metal filter media and available active regeneration via an on-board electrical heater, has been considered for retrofitting diesel engines used in light- and medium-duty underground mining applications. Two DPF systems were installed on a forklift and locomotive from the underground mining fleet of the Vale?s Creighton Mine and evaluated over a 1,500-hour trial. This evaluation was complemented with field and laboratory emissions tests. The field tests were performed on the vehicles while at the Creighton Mine surface shop. During those tests, the emissions were assessed for the engines operated at hydraulic stall, high idle, and low idle conditions. The laboratory tests were executed at the diesel engine emissions laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), here the DPF removed from the forklift was further evaluated at four steady-state engine operating conditions as well as at transient conditions using a custom-designed duty cycle. Very similar methodologies were used during field and laboratory tests to measure concentrations of aerosols and criteria gases in the diesel exhaust, both upstream and downstream of the DPF system. The concentrations and size distributions of aerosols were measured using a fast mobility particle sizer spectrometer, in exhaust diluted by a partial flow dilution system. The concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, and NO2 were measured in the raw exhaust using a Fourier transform infra-red spectrometer. Both field and laboratory emissions tests showed that the evaluated DPF systems were very effective in reducing aerosol emissions from all tested engines, and for all test conditions. The systems were found to have minor effects on gaseous emissions from those engines. The findings from this study should help the mining industry to better understand the benefits and challenges of using DPF systems to control the exposure of underground miners to diesel aerosols.

Introduction A Self-Dumping cage which combines the features of a small skip and a cage has been used in a vertical winze between the 2,000 and 2,500 levels at the Coniaurum mine for the past three years, during which time its success has been demonstrated by uninterrupted service and low maintenance charges. lt was designed by John Reddington, mine manager, and was built under his supervision in the Coniaurum mine shops. Being new in many of its operating features, a small-scale model was made and tried before the final construction was undertaken. The mechanical performance of the model suggested a few minor changes that were incorporated in the final drawings. During its three years of use, the automatic dumping device has saved the expense of deck-handling of the cars. This actually represents a gross economy of something over four times the cost of construction and installation, which totalled $1,325. The cage, empty, weighs 2,200 pounds, of which 500 pounds represents the weight of the dumping accessory and necessarily heavier construction. Besides a considerable financial saving, the time saved in unloading increases the daily hoisting capacity of the winze. In raising ore from the 2,500 level, five minutes are required for a complete trip. Allowing one minute for the alternative of decking, we believe that the automatic dumping has increased the capacity of the winze hoist nearly 20 percent.

In the metal casting industry an improvement of component quality mainly depends on better control over the production parameters. Thus, thermal analysis cooling curve of the alloy is used for process control in aluminum casting industry. Cooling rates of the alloy during solidification process affect microstructure, grain size, eutectic silicon morphology, and dendrite arm spacing (DAS). In this research, effect of cooling rate on the microstructure and solidification parameters of 319 aluminum alloy that is a widely used alloy in automotive industry, has been investigated by means of thermal analysis. Seven different cooling rates have been obtained by using CO2-bonded silica sand molds with two different wall thicknesses, hot-work tool steel molds (H13) with and without coating, thin-wall steel molds with different coatings. In each case, cooling curve and first derivative cooling curve have been plotted by use of very accurate thermal analysis equipment. Effect of different cooling rates on solidification parameters e.g. Nucleation temperature (TN,a), nucleation undercooling (ATN,a), recalescence temperature (TR,a), solidification range (AT,s), and total solidification time (t 0 have been studied in the liquidus region. Microstructural evaluation has been carried out and DAS were measured in all solidification conditions. A numerical equation was proposed to predict cooling rates via measuring DAS in 319 aluminum alloy. Nucleation process and the effect of cooling rate have been interpreted by using thermal analysis cooling curves and microstructural study.

The difference in age, host rock lithology, alteration and style of mineralization indicates a fundamental difference in the format ion of gold deposits in the Flin Flon and Amisk Lake areas. The Flin Flon area contains early quartz-sulfide-gold veins fo rmed within intermittently active fractures and later plutonic hosted deposits thought to be generated in a porphyry system. In the Amisk Lake area two types of gold occurrences are recognized: I) gold-quartzcarbonate- sulfide veins within or flanking fault zones and 2) structurally and stratigraphical ly controlled zones of dissem inated and vein type sulfide-gold mineralization within extrusive and intrusive rhyolite and dacite porphyries. Both types of deposits are set within supracrustal rocks. are accompanied by intense alteration haloes and were formed prior to the major deformation event suggesting an early, epigenetic hydrothermal origin.

A common problem in Gas Treatment Centers (GTC) from primary aluminium smelters is the temperature of the gas to be treated : above a threshold, filtering media are irreversibly damaged. The traditional way of dealing with high gas temperature is to dilute with fresh air, which implies over sizing - and therefore higher cost for - the GTC in order to have the capacity to treat this dilution air without compromising on pot suction. A system was developed which decreases gas temperature without having to use dilution air. This system is based on water pulverization in gas collectors. The water vaporization leads to a temperature decrease of the gas. A pilot system was trialed in our R&D unit. Satisfactory results led to the development of an industrial system based on Envirocare equipment (partnership), which was trialed in our production plant in Tomago (NSW, Australia). This patented system was then generalized in this plant, which is now using it with success during austral summer.

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. Preliminary bench-scale studies were carried out on the leaching of a zinc sulphide concentrate from Somincor, Portugal, and the purification of the resulting pregnant solution using solvent extraction techniques. The sulphide concentrate contained 36% Zn, 36% S, 2% Fe and 4% Cu. The leaching was carried out with sulphuric acid in the presence of ferric sulphate as the oxidant. Important leaching parameters, such as the effect of reaction time, the solid-liquid ratio, temperature and concentrations of acid and oxidant, were investigated. After leaching, the recovered solution was contacted with an organic phase containing Acorga 5640 to remove the copper. Subsequently, the removal of iron from the leaching solution was achieved with a mixture of Cyanex 272 and TBP. This solvent mixture was relatively selective for iron over zinc. The stripping of the loaded solvent was performed with 200 g/L H2SO4. Six countercurrent extraction stages achieved a separation of about 99% of the iron from the leaching solution. The iron-free leachate can be further treated to recover minor metals by cementation, and finally, zinc by liquid-liquid extraction. The advantages of the suggested process relative to the traditional jarosite process are discussed.

Refractory minerals .containing uranium and columbium have been successfully treated at Queen's University, Kingston, to produce high-grade concentrates. Recoveries of over 90 per cent of the uranium and columbium have been obtained when treating concentrates containing euxenite, fergusonite, betafite, and pyrochlore. The processes ?consisted -of leaching the columbium with hydrofluoric acid, and the uranium with nitric acid, sulphuric acid, or sodium carbonate solutions. The leach liquors were extracted with organic solvents from which the values were stripped and precipitated, producing final products assaying 45 to 55 per cent Ob2O5 and 60 to 70 per cent U3Os.

This paper investigates the behavior of ore pass walls under impact loads caused by material transiting through an ore pass. In particular it considers the influence of foliation in the rock mass surrounding an ore pass as both a triggering and accentuating cause of degradation. Based on empirical observations in several underground mines a numerical experiment was designed to understand the influence of rock mass foliation on impact-induced damage on ore pass walls. The distinct element method, and in particular the Particle Flow Code (PFC2D) was used to simulate three different rock masses surrounding an ore pass. Each simulated rock mass has similar properties but was defined by distinct dominant foliation (70o, 80o, 90o) along the foot wall. The numerical experiments investigated different scenarios whereby the walls were loaded by a projected rock fragment striking the foliated walls at a constant impact angle and velocity. The damage inflicted by the projectile rock fragment, on the foliated rock mass, was quantified using the number of impact-induced micro-cracks initiated on the ore pass wall. The results of the numerical analysis indicated that the presence of foliation resulted in greater damage zones in the surrounding rock mass. In addition, the extent of impact-induced damage to the ore pass wall increased as the angle of interception between the ore pass wall and the rock mass foliations decreases. This is in agreement with qualitative field observations.

The rate of liquid copper deoxidation during top blowing of reducing flames has been investigated using a high capacity thermogravimetric unit at 1200 °C. For 1 kg copper samples, it was observed that the rate of deoxidation was proportional to the flow rate of the reducing reagent (H2 or CO). Under similar experimental conditions, it was found that H2 is more effective than CO even though both have similar thermodynamic potential to deoxidize liquid copper. The rate of deoxidation of liquid copper with reducing 0 2/CH4 flames was measured for 0 2/CH4 molar ratios of 1.5 to 2. The deoxidation rate depends on the 0 2/CH4 ratio and decreases as it approaches the stoichiometric ratio (02/CH4 = 2). Estimation of the rate of deoxidation of liquid copper with top blowing flames based on the thermodynamic composition ofH2 and CO in the product gases, agrees well with measured values.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of the dip needle in the field of mining geology. The subject matter is new only to the extent that it reflects the writer' s added experience in recent years. The treatment is brief, and those interested in a more extended analysis are referred to the articles listed at the end of the paper. In the discovery and tracing of mineral deposits, the clip needle, like most other geophysical instruments, can be used in two ways. One method may be termed direct; the other, indirect. The direct method is that of finding or following certain ore-bodies by virtue of their magnetic properties. Explicitly, or by inference, it is the method which many mining men and practising geophysicists have in mind when they consider whether or not a certain property should be studied by geophysical means. In the ideal case, this method demands little or no knowledge of geological conditions. The indirect method uses the clip needle as an aid to purely geological studies in working out the structure of a mineralized area. Although not as simple as the direct method, it enjoys a much wider field of usefulness. The writer's experience in the past fifteen years, which is believed to be typical, is that the indirect method finds application four or five times as often as the direct method. The indirect method is of particular value because it furnishes information concerning the relationship between geological structure and ore occurrence. Most mining engineers will agree that structural control is an important factor in the localization of ore deposits, and therefore that the subject under consideration is of some interest in mining geology. Specifically, then, the present purpose is to outline the principles and practice of using the clip needle in working? out geological structure.

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) processes a multi-component ore body using a circuit consisting of two AG mills in parallel, closed with vibrating double deck screens and hydrocyclones. The bottom screen undersize feeds the hydrocyclones, but the screen oversize products can be treated in a variety of ways. The top deck screen pebbles can be crushed and then combined with the bottom deck oversize and recycled to the AG mill. Alternatively both the top and bottom deck screen oversize can by-pass the recycle crusher and be recycled directly to the mill. A full tap-off is a configuration when both the top and bottom deck screen oversize streams are stockpiled. The other configuration is when the bottom deck screen oversize is recycled to the mill while the top deck screen oversize is stockpiled - termed partial tap-off. This article reports the findings from the surveys performed to evaluate the performance of the PMC auto mill circuit when operated under the four different configurations discussed. Ore characterisation tests were performed to assess the deportment of the key ore components for the different configuration.

Acidic mine waters containing solubilized uranium have been observed in many uranium and some copper mines. In every case, the sulphide and iron oxidizing bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was also present. This bacterium provides the ferric iron required to oxidize u+4, both by oxidizing available ferrous iron and by oxidizing pyrite or other available sulphide minerals. This latter oxidation also provides sulphuric acid and may increase extraction by exposing more uranium. The enhancement of bacterial activity and the results of some field tests are discussed.
