The use of lightweight aggregate as a constituent of concrete is not a recent development. Pumice was used by the early Romans, in pozzolana cement concretes, in the construction of many of their works. However, the recent development of manufactured lightweight aggregates, such as the expanded shales, vermiculite and perlite, has created a possible use for a whole new group of Portland cement concretes. Concrete can now be produced with unit weights ranging from 30 to 150 pounds per cubic foot and with various insulating, fireproofing, acoustical and structural properties. The tonnage of such materials being used has increased considerably in each of the past ten years, and can be expected to increase for the next several years as availability of the aggregates becomes more widespread and the properties of such concretes become more thoroughly investigated and more generally known. "Al-Mg-Si alloys often add small additions of e.g. Mn or Cr, to form dispersoids, which may act as nucleation sites for Mg2Si particles after homogenization. The purpose is to ensure a high density of uniformly distributed small ?’-particles, which can be dissolved during further processing prior to the final age hardening step. However, their density and spatial distribution are critically dependent on the homogenization procedure. It is therefore important to have a robust and reliable method for assessing their spatial distribution. In the present work an existing methodology for assessing spatial uniformity, the Global Shannon Entropy (GSE), has been implemented and evaluated for different dispersoid structures characterized by scanning electron microscopy. This metric is highly dependent on the parameters used, but by careful selection of adequate parameters, it can be effective in detecting non-uniformity. An important weakness with the GSE was identified, and a modification to improve on the ability to differentiate degrees of non-uniformity is suggested. To evaluate the proposed methodology, the effect of heating rate on dispersoid precipitation behaviour during homogenisation of four Al-Mg-Si alloys with different Mn/Cr-content has been investigated. The metric with the new term has demonstrated promising results, and improved the ability to differentiate degrees of spatial uniformity.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si series alloys are the most common aluminium extrusion alloys and are attractive for applications in a range of sectors (e.g. construction, automotive and recently also in consumer electronics), due to their generally good combination of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. However, their extrudability and end properties depend critically on the alloy chemistry as well as prior processing conditions. Coarse ß-AlFeSi or Mg2Si-particles typically have a detrimental effect on extrudability, while small dispersoid particles may affect recrystallization, grain growth and precipitation of Mg and Si. The strengthening potential in the final age hardening step depends strongly on the amount of Mg and Si in solid solution after extrusion. The manner in which these particles are spatially distributed will decide whether the final product will exhibit uniform properties, and the number density and sizes will determine the extent of the effect. As such, these are important characteristics."

Poland is the ninth largest coal producer in the world and Coal Company is the largest Polish producer of this deposit yielding 51% of national production. Coal Company mines are located in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. These are underground mines which operate in difficult geological conditions at great depths of up to 1200 m. One of the most common natural hazards in Polish mines are rockburst and seismic hazard impacting on surface infrastructure and habitants. In the assessment of the rockburst and seismic hazard methods of mining seismology play a leading role. This paper presents progress that was achieved in the last few years in the implementation of new seismic monitoring systems and seismic interpretation methods for the prevention of hazard deriving from seismicity induced by mining. This progress in assessment of rockburst hazard and impact of seismic activity on the surface infrastructure was achieved through close cooperation between the Coal Company and Central Mining Institute ? the country?s leading scientific institute in the field of mining seismology. New theoretical solutions are in the process of testing in mines of Coal Company where seismic monitoring systems are installed and controlled by well-qualified personnel. Some directions of further joint actions to increase the effectiveness of rockburst and seismic hazard assessment are presented as well.

Flotation separation is expected to be related to the degree of dispersion of the pulp. For instance, highly aggregated systems may show reduced selectivity, reduced entrainment and increased flotation rate. In an attempt to test the impact of aggregation on flotation, we have taken advantage of the effect of Mg ions. Using combinations of Mg2+ and pH gave a wide variation in aggregation of several Cu-Zn ores (measured by settling rate) and corresponding flotation response was determined by batch tests. The trials were conducted on-site at Louvicourt and Agnico-Eagle. In a majority of cases a similar trend in aggregation and flotation selectivity (grade at given recovery) was observed. At Louvicourt, improved selectivity with increasing aggregation at pH 10.5 was found. At Agnico-Eagle, an analogous association between aggregation and selectivity was observed at pH 11.5. It is suggested that aggregation influences particle entrainment, the increased effective particle size reducing gangue recovery and hence improving selectivity.

Gold passivation in thiosulfate leaching media is a major barrier to its implementation. Addition of Cu (II) into the leaching solution has shown to aid in gold dissolution, but the mechanism by which it acts, and its role in the passive layer, remains unknown. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), in tandem with linear sweep voltammetry, were employed to determine the dependence of leaching currents on mass transport and for fingerprint identification of sulfur species on the surface of gold. SERS leaching experiments were performed using gold nanorod electrodes that showed increased stability compared to other SERS active surfaces.

The dissolution of chalcopyrite has received a significant amount of attention. The predominant paradigm of investigation is that its rate of dissolution is limited or passivated by a surface coating or film of material. The common candidates for such a passivating coating are numerous: polysulfide coating, metal deficient layers, copper sulfide coating, bornite layers, jarosite precipitates, and elemental sulfur films. While this line of explanation, that is, the explanation based on passivation, seems to have won some form of consensus with researchers, there is another explanation for the results that can account for all the results observed. Crundwell (1988) proposed that the solid state properties of chalcopyrite, in particular, the semiconducting properties, are responsible for the observed behaviour of chalcopyrite. The purpose of this paper is to outline the semiconductor mechanism of dissolution, and to show how this mechanism accounts for all the observed phenomena recently reported in the literature. This paper discusses one of the common problems associated with sheet metal forming processes, which is spring back. The materials presented here, stainless steel 410 and Inconel 718, are commonly used in aerospace applications for their superior material properties. Standard tensile tests were performed to determine their tensile properties, as well as material anisotropy. In addition, the effect of anisotropy on springback was assessed experimentally through simple multiple-bending experiments in different directions to the rolling direction. Finally, draw-bending experiments were carried out to study the effect of forming conditions, such as blank holding force, on the final springback angles of the formed parts. For both materials, it was found that the R-values measured for different sheets exhibited variation. However, the specimen orientation does not have a large effect on material tensile behavior or springback angle for simple bending. For the Inconel 718 specimens, the springback angle slightly increases with each stage of deformation during multiple bend experiments. The effect of the blank holding force on springback angles was also examined and found to have a significant effect on thin specimens.

"A fast, reliable and accurate method for radium-226 determination in environmental water samples has been devised, using an alpha spectroscopic technique. The correlation between barium-133 and radium-226 in the barium-radium sulphate precipitation mechanism was studied and in the limited experimental recovery range, the coefficient of correlation was r = 0.986. A self-absorption study for various barium carrier concentrations was also undertaken to obtain the least broadening of alpha energy line widths. An optimum value of 0.3 mg barium carrier was obtained for chemical recovery in the range of 85%.IntroductionWith the increase in uranium mining activities, the migration and spread of radioactivity via various environmental pathways is of great concern. Because of its inherent biological hazard and relatively long half-life, (approximately 1620 years), raidum-226 is frequently monitored as a measure of radioactive contamination of the environment. It is, therefore, necessary to modify existing methods for rapid determination of radium-226 in environmental samples for quick corrective measures in the event of seepage, dam leakage or discharge violations."

"This text consists of two parts, comments on "Classification and Reporting of Mineral Resources for High-Nugget Effect Gold Vein Deposits," by S.C. Dominy, P.R. Stephenson and A.E. Annels, Volume 10, No. 3, pp. 215-233, and related comments on some features of the JORC Code.This paper is, in many respects, a very elaborate and valuable account of the problems encountered in the estimation and classification of high-nugget gold deposits. However, in some key areas, it appears to fall short of its objective to help "resolve satisfactorily most issues" and "contribute to improved estimation and classification" (abstract). One must realize that high-nugget effect gold deposits constitute a very narrow field, despite the occasional bonanzas. This is a field of mostly smaller sized deposits, where limited success and a significantly higher rate of failure occur relative to larger deposits of mostly lower grade. This is shown by the six deposits described in the paper. Thanks for contributing to greater understanding of these complex and nevertheless challenging deposits."

"Performance testing of prepartion plants is referred to as plant audit. It evaluates plant performance under normal operating conditions and is aimed at improving yield through knowledge of actual process performance and interactions between different processes in a plant.This paper describes the program to evaluate the performance of several Canadian preparation plants. The performance test requires the planning of a sampling campaign that would include all circuits in the plant. Samples are analyzed to determine washing characteristics (screen and float-sink), ash and per cent solids of feed and products of separation units in the plant. Performance characteristics are established based on analysis and material balance. Specific recommendations can then be made to improve recovery, and identify and explain potential causes of apparent deficiencies.The objectives of the program are to reduce the cost of production by improving recovery of clean coal and, in tum, to reduce disposed tailings, establish baseline information on coal preparation plants performance in Canada, and define R&D work needed to optimize plant operation."

Radon emanation rates. J. and compositions of materials from the Canadian Certified Reference Materials Project (CCRMP) indicate that the fraction of the Rn produced that escapes, E, is usually 1% to 8% and the 238U decay chain is nearly in secular equilibrium. For some Chinese ore standards, E values are higher than f or the CCRMP materials. Standard ore tailings have 2/oPb concentrations higher than expected from their 226Ra concentrations and Rn escape rates (12 - 34%) . Biological materials have E ˜100%, their ash E ˜0%. Pelletizing ore powders at 20 000 lb/in2 reduces J by only 20 - 40% but only 2% of Rn escapes from pressed Li2B4O7 pellets and 0.01 - 0.04% from fused Na2B4O7 or Li2B4O7 discs. Large, difficult-to-explain random variations in J are observed in some situations but several highly reproducible ways of measuring emanation rates have been found.

"Based on laboratory and pilot scale continuous biooxidation of complex sulphide concentrates, commercial processing design and scaleup considerations are discussed. Capital and operating cost estimates for commercial biohydrometallurgical operations are summarized and potential applications of biotechnology are discussed. Biooxidation as an oxidative pretreatment alternative to enhance precious metals extraction from refractory sulphide concentrates in stirred tank reactors has received considerable attention recently due mainly to advances in the practical applicability of the process. Biooxidation of sulphides is certainly not a new process, however, application and control in large scale hydrometallurgical operations to treat refractory sulphides remains conceptual and the limited data available is restricted to relatively small laboratory and pilot scale operations. It is the intent of this paper to indicate scaleup and plant scale process design considerations for commercial bioleach circuits, based on recent operating experiences with laboratory and pilot scale continuous bioleach systems. An indication of the expected range of applications will be presented parameters for optimization will be discussed."

To ensure a longer life span, transformers should be checked on a regular basis.What is a Power Transformer?It can be a 90 MVA transformer for Hydro-Québec or a power transformer can be a 500 KVA unit in a small hospital. Generally a power transformer is an oil -filled type of 3 to 5 MVA. It can also be a dry type transformer, that should be treated in the same manner as oil-filled transformers, and some of the tests explained in this paper also apply."

Relative permeability curves represent an important element of special core analyses, but challenges remain in obtaining valid results and the extrapolation and use of existing permeability results is problematic. This situation is compounded in cases where core properties are altered from changes in effective stress. During the production of oil and gas reservoirs, the effective stress changes as a result of changes in pore pressure or temperature. Therefore, changes in rock properties such as porosity and permeability will occur and will consequently influence reservoir performance calculations. An experimental program was carried out to understand the behavior of dense, reconstituted sand samples at low effective stress states. Drained triaxial compression tests were set up to study the effect of stress alteration on relative permeability data through porous media. Initially, a saturation stage was performed followed by isotropic loading to bring the core sample to reservoir fluid and stress conditions. Then, while axial (deviatoric stress) loading was applied to the sample, a series of absolute and relative permeability tests was performed under steady state flow at different levels of strain during pre and post peak shearing stress. The stress-strain behavior results from the study revealed that the absolute permeability decreased during isotropic loading (compaction) and increased during shearing (dilation). However, the shape of relative permeability curve changed from contraction to dilation and showed higher initial kro and the lower initial kro respectively. The goal of this project was to understand the behavior of both absolute and relative permeability at different stresses. It is expected that geomechanical processes will be adopted for special core analyses to support the current integration of geomechanics into reservoir engineering. This will be required if, during SAGD, conventional and/or unconventional reservoir simulation, reservoir engineers implement a proper set of relative permeability data at each in situ state of stress, instead of constant curves throughout the field?s life.

In high temperature processes thermodynamic equilibrium is assumed and therefore chemical potential of elements, among the condensed phases, have to be the same. In such situation impurities distribute accordingly and their fractional distributions are affected by the masses of the coexisting phases. It has been claimed Teniente Converters perform quite well for smelting high impurity concentrates, especially in respect to volatilization and/or slagging. Production of high matte grade near white metal composition, requiring moderate oxygen enrichment in the process air, results in a huge mass of gas and therefore a high fraction of impurities report to it. Similarly, by recycling different sources of slag, flue dust or other materials, the mass of the final slag is increased and so do the masses of impurities reporting to the slag. Nevertheless, above a certain level the recycling of smelter byproducts is no longer feasible and the cycle has to be halted, unless higher impurity mattes are accepted. Although the process might be continued during converting and refining, lengthy and expensive measures have to be taken if suitable anode copper for electrolytic refining is to be achieved. In the present study samples of high arsenic matte grade and slag were obtained on a pilot scale. The matte samples, on the order 75%Cu, were equilibrated with slag at varying ratios in magnesia crucibles under CO/C02 atmospheres at 1523 K. After 24 hours equilibrium matte and slag were rapidly solidified and analyzed by copper, sulfur, iron and arsenic. Furthermore, industrial samples of matte and slag, in the order 75%Cu at 1523 K, were obtained via a special quenching sampling device to determine the association of copper and suspension of matte and copper in slag. Based on the results, the distribution coefficient of arsenic between slag and matte was evaluated along with copper species in slag and the fractional distribution of arsenic, in the coexisting phases, was determined as a function of the ratio mass of slag to mass of matte.

Inorganic salts of hexavalent iron (ferrate (VI)) are versatile reagents for water and industrial effluent treatment because of the strong oxidising effect of the ferrate ion (FeO42-) and the well-known coagulation properties of the resulting ferric ion. Among other applications, ferrate can effectively remove arsenic, cyanide and phenols from industrial effluents. Furthermore, ferrate salts can be prepared from ferrous sulphate, a common byproduct of the steel and titanium industries, and possibly from other iron wastes. Notwithstanding their many potential advantages, the industrial-scale application of ferrate salts, such as potassium ferrate (K2FeO4), for effluent treatment has been hindered by the difficulties inherent in their synthesis and stabilisation. Within a project co-funded by the European Commission, the large-scale synthesis of stabilised potassium ferrate was realised through a new synthesis process, and different applications of the resulting ferrate to effluent and wastewater treatment are under investigation. This paper reports the results of the application of stabilised potassium ferrate for the purification of textile effluents. Laboratory and pilot-scale tests were carried out and the performance of the ferrate was compared to that of chemicals currently used in wastewater treatment. According to these experiments, potassium ferrate is a promising reagent for an effective treatment of textile and other industrial effluents.

The details connected with the mining and subsequent handling of Creighton ore were fully covered in a paper presented to the Institute in 1920. The following brief notes describe certain phases of the present practice and show wherein it differs from the practice at that time. These may be summarized under the following headings. (a) Recovery of pillars. (b) Drawing the ore. (c) Change from sub-level tramming to branch-raise system. (d) Chute construction. The present stoping practice is the same as formerly, i.e., fiat-backed shrinkage stopes of 60-foot width, between rib pillars of 15-foot width, extending from the footwall to the hanging-wall. Formerly, when these stopes were completed to the stopes above, they were drawn empty of broken ore, and the 15-foot rib pillars were caved into the stopes and drawn off through the same chutes as were used to draw the ore from the stopes.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures are a serious occupational health hazard in underground mines. While the complex nature of DPM makes direct analysis difficult, its primary component, elemental carbon (EC), can be used as surrogate. The near real-time FLIR Airtec monitor measures EC mass based on laser extinction. It was developed for use in underground metal/non-metal mines, and calibrated to the NIOSH Method 5040. Its effectiveness has not been demonstrated in coal mines, however, where coal-sourced EC could produce analytical interference. To gain preliminary insights regarding the Airtec’s performance in the presence of coal dust, experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory chamber. The Airtec EC results consistently underestimated Method 5040 EC for both respirable-sized and submicron coal dusts. While underestimation of coal-sourced EC bodes well for limiting coal interference for DPM measurement, one key reason for the observed trend was non-uniform coal particle deposition on the Airtec filter. This may be problematic in coal mines where DPM and coal dust occur together in the instance that DPM deposition is also non-uniform. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard, and underground miners have the potential for relatively high exposures due to their work in confined environments with large diesel equipment (NIOSH, 2011). DPM is heterogenous and complex in terms of its chemical composition (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006), but elemental (EC) and total carbon (TC) are often used as analytical surrogates (Birch & Noll, 2004; Noll et al, 2015). EC is the solid “soot” component of DPM, whereas TC also includes particulate organic carbon (OC) (Noll et al., 2007). EC and OC can be measured in filter samples using the standard NIOSH Method 5040 (NIOSH, 2003), and summed to obtain TC. In US mines, TC has been adopted as the analytical surrogate for DPM in regulatory activities. In metal/non-metal mines, personal exposures are limited under 30 CFR Part 57. In coal mines, limitations are made on emissions from each piece of equipment (30 CFR Part 72) rather than for personal exposures. This is because coal dust has the potential to interfere with TC measurements in personal samples. In some other countries, and for non-regulatory purposes in the US, EC is also commonly used as a surrogate for DPM in mine monitoring applications [e.g., see AIOSH, 2013). EC generally exhibits a linear correlation with TC (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006 and 2007) but unlike TC measurements, which are analytically intensive, EC can be determined more simply using a laser absorption/extinction principle on filter samples (Noll et al., 2013)."

To achieve penetration on the energy market, hydrogen must overcome obstacles in the areas of storage, safety and infrastructure. One of the most important is the onboard storage of hydrogen for transportation applications, where large performance gaps exist between the current state of the technology and user expectations. In order to develop and demonstrate viable hydrogen storage technologies for cars, a set of gravimetric and volumetric system targets have been proposed by the US Department of Energy, based on achieving a driving range of 500 km for a hydrogen powered vehicle. A factor of 2 to 3 improvement in both hydrogen storage capacity and energy density is needed along with several other performance goals. Another key issue is safety. Although some of the safety issues can be arguably assigned to misperceptions, hydrogen has specific properties that have to be addressed, particularly in confined geometries where the risk of hydrogen detonations becomes an issue.
