ABSTRACT This paper briefly reviews the gravity recovery between conventional and centrifugal gravity separators. The advantages of semicontinuous gravity separators will be discussed, as will techniques for upgrading the gravity concentrates. The research efforts in optimizing semicontinuous gravity separators will be recalled. An innovative gravity circuit for eliminating or minimizing the use of complex processing schemes will be reviewed. Ongoing gold gravity research has revealed that gold particle shape transformation is one of the main factors explaining the lower recoveries of the plant units. Efforts to devise possible remedies for improving plant gravity recovery will be discussed.

Thermal power plants convert thermal energy due to nuclear reactions or the combustion of coal, gas, heavy oil, or some other hydrocarbon to electrical energy. They consist of a variety of equipment, such as boilers, turbines, generators, cooling towers, and auxiliary equipment. Any factor that affects the equipment efficiency affects the overall efficiency. Analysis of the cooling tower and raw water using the Langlier Saturation and Ryznar Stability Indices showed that the cooling water at Sarchesmeh was slightly scaling with respect to silica. Cold lime softening was found to be a cost-effective method to produce cooling water with adequate properties to reduce the cooling water make up from 85 to 70 m3/h and blow down rate from 35 to 20 m3/h.

STRATMAT LIMITED, through its subsidiary, the Strategic Manganese Corporation, controls two adjoining iron-manganese properties five miles west of Woodstock, New Brunswick. One is a staked property of 77 claims traversed by one trunk highway, several secondary roads, and a branch line of the Canadian National railway. The other property, a 20-square-mile Concession immediately to the north-east, is also traversed by an excellent network of roads. Both proper-ties are situated in gently rolling farmland. The deposits were discovered in 1836 by Dr. C. T. Jackson. The first attempt to exploit them was made in 1848 when a blast furnace was erected with a capacity of 7 tons per day. The ore was mined by a series of deep trenches that followed the folds of the enclosing slates. In the late years of operation, bog iron ore from Burton and Maugerville, in Sunbury county, was used in conjunction with the Wood-stock ore. An additional 5-ton furnace was erected in 1863 and mining was carried on intermittently until 1884. No further extensive work was done until 1953. During the period of activity, approximately 70,-000 tons of ore are said to have been smelted ( 1). During these earl y operations the Iron Ore Hill and Moody Hill deposits were partially opened, with the ?bulk of the furnace feed being mined from the Iron Ore Hill workings. The low tenor and apparently limited extent of the deposits, the high. ?content of phosphorus, and the increasing scarcity of fuel, were the chief factors that brought the enterprise to an end.

"Solvent extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for the multi-metal separation. However, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions and/or multi-steps two phase equilibrating in conventional SX processes were always unavoidable due to the poor separation selectivity between those metals with similar physicochemical properties. In this paper, our recent efforts, aimed to develop a “Three Liquid Phase Extraction” (TLPE) strategy for one-step separation and selective enrichment of different metals respectively into three coexisted liquid phases, are reviewed. Various feasible “Three Liquid Phase Systems” (TLPS) are evaluated. The TLPE technique provides a potential possibility for multiphase extraction to separate multi-metals.INTRODUCTIONLiquid-liquid Solvent Extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for metal separation and purification. Traditionally, extraction and separation of multiple valuable metals from the leaching solutions of complex ores, industrial wastes and byproducts have to face such difficulties that multiple target metals with similar physicochemical properties co-exist in the solutions, and therefore their mutual separation selectivities are very poor. In conventional organic-water two phase SX processes, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions including the adjustment of the solution acidity, removal of impurities and/or multi-step liquid-liquid two phase equilibration were always unavoidable (Wang and Chen, 2001). Only one of the target metals is obtained in each extraction step, therefore the whole separation processes for multi-metal separation are typically very long and costly.Liquid-liquid-liquid three phase extraction is a developing technique for separation of complex systems containing multiple target components (Tan, 2003; Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009). The technique is in fact a three-liquid-phase selectively partitioning of different target components through the control of phase-forming behaviors of extraction system to create a unique separation medium with three co-existed liquid phases. The separation selectivity of “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS) may derive from its three-layered liquid phases from up to down with different hydrophobic or hydrophilic environment, and therefore each phase has its own specific selectivity for dissolving of an individual component. In a well designed “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS), multiphase extraction and selective separation of different components respectively into three different liquid phases can be achieved by only one-step of extraction. Owing to its distinct advantages, “Three-Liquid-Phase Extraction” (TLPE) technique has found many potential applications in purification of various organic chemicals (Shen, 2007) and biological activities (Chen, 2002; Tan, 2006; Jiang, 2008), treatment of environmental wastewaters (Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009; Yu, 2010; He, 2012), extraction of valuable components in natural products (Liu, 2010) and separation of multi-metals in complex leaching solutions (Jin, 2009)."

"Cable bolts are an important support component in modern underground mines. If an optimized cable bolt system is to be achieved, it is insufficient to focus on cable bolt layout design or on cable bolt installation in isolation. Cable bolt support, like all engineered systems, requires a holistic approach, encompassing integrated elements of design, implementation and verification. The “Cable bolting Cycle” described in this paper incorporates these components along with related tools and procedures which should be used together to ensure effective and efficient cable bolt support.Design involves the consideration of demand, capacity and constraints as outlined in this paper. The demands imposed on the sup-port system by the rock mass response to excavation under the combined action of stress and gravity must be matched to the capacity of the cable bolt array. The cable bolt system capacity is a function of the component strengths of the steel strand and the bond (load transfer) and by the deformation response and retention characteristics of the system. The design is bounded by operational and economic constraints.Implementation of the cable bolt array can then proceed and must include appropriate protocols of communication, training and quality control, in addition to both general and site specific installation procedures. "Roughness at varying scales is an important component of the shear strength of discontinuities. Small scale roughness can be assessed in drillcore and through laboratory testing of drillcore derived samples. Large scale roughness, or waviness, also plays an important part in peak shear strength and a number of methods for its incorporation into defect plane strength models are presented.A number of methods for capturing waviness data from exposed faces are reviewed. A method is presented for deriving waviness from downhole televiewer data, which is shown to be significantly more accurate than structural data derived from core logging. The method is based on work undertaken in the highly anisotropic bedded units of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia where televiewer surveys are routinely undertaken. Values of waviness are derived through a review of variation in dip resolved in the direction of the slope face. This method allows design engineers to incorporate large scale roughness in defect plane shear strengths at the design stage.INTRODUCTIONThere are a number of constitutive models currently being applied by rock mechanics practitioners in calculating defect plane shear strength parameters, such as Patton, Barton – Bandis and Hencher [1, 2, 3]. Most of these shear strength determinations are typically undertaken by determining the base or residual friction angle, and applying corrections for small and large scale surface roughness."

"The isothermal bainite transformation kinetics of low- and medium-carbon alloy steels after hot deformation and the rmocycling treatment (TC) has been studied by the magneto - metric method. Deformation was produced by rolling at 800°C-1000°C. TC included three cycles of rapid (30°C/s) electro-heating up to 900°C-1000°C followed by quenching.Hot deformation retards bainite transformation in the lower part of bainite range (<400°C) and accelerates it in the upper part (>400°C). The effect is greater for higher strain and lower deformation temperature. Deformation also diminishes the overall bainite fraction below 400°C and increases the completeness of reaction above 400°C.Thermocycling provides more uniform ultrafine austenite grains with average size of 3 µm -4 µm compared to 12 µm -14 µm after conventional heating. The transformation rate after TC was almost the same as after conventional heating in low-carbon steel but was faster in medium-carbon with no change in the completeness of reaction. The degree of acceleration increased with rise of transformation temperature.There are a number of factors which are responsible for a change in bainite transformation kinetics in austenite deformed at high temperatures or subjected to TC. One of the most important factors is the refinement of structure, another one is structural and chemical inhomogenity of austenite due to deformation or to rapid heating. To estimate the contribution of these factors, ?-transformation was studied after different austenitizing conditions (low-temperature heating at 850°C- 950°C; high-temperature heating at 1100°C; step treatment – austenitizing at 1100°C, then cooling to 950°C-850°C). The results obtained make it possible to conclude that the structural and chemical inhomogeneity of austenite activate the bainite reaction while the grain refinement retards it. Intensity of the effect produced by each factor depends strongly on the steel composition."

The Eagle zone is a gold-bearing, sheeted, quartz vein porphyry deposit hosted by the Cretaceous Dublin Gulch biotite granodiorite stock, located in central Yukon, 50 km north of Mayo. The deposit occurs at the western end of the stock and has been drill tested over a 1000 m by 500 m area, to a depth of 150m. Mineralization consists of 1 cm to 2 Cm wide, parallel, grey and white quartz veins with accessory gold, arsenopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, native bismuth, bismuthinite, and scheelite. Vein densities range from two to fifteen veins per metre and average approximately five per metre. The majority of the veins have potassic and or phyllic alteration envelopes. Alteration of the granodiorite becomes pervasive as vein densities increase. Mineralization outside of the Eagle zone, but spatially related to the Dublin Gulch stock, includes: (i) scheelite bearing sheeted quartz vein zones within the east-central portion of the stock; (ii) a swarm of gold-bearing quartz-sulphide veins up to a metre wide in a zone along the northern contact of the stock and extending 7 km further west; (iii) the Mar scheelite skarn located on the south side of the stock; and (iv) cassiterite-bearing breccias located 2 km north of the stock. A geological potential resource of 64.5 Mt tonnes at a grade of 1.03 g/t Au has been estimated for the Eagle zone from widely spaced core and reverse circulation drill holes. Mineralization is open at depth, on strike to the west and beneath the hornfels to the north.

"The CTL-500 centrifugal extraction machine, which was independently developed by Baotou Shibo Rare Earth Extraction & Equipment Co., Ltd., is presented in this article. The machine is based on centrifugal extraction principle and has been used in P507-HCl-RECl3 extraction system. Automatic control has been utilized in the system. In this paper, a comparison is made between centrifugal extraction and conventional mixer-settler extraction and satisfactory results are shown. INTRODUCTIONCentrifugal extraction is a fast and efficient liquid-liquid extraction method. The process includes solute transfer and separation of the two liquid phases. In the CTL-500 machine, the organic and aqueous phases individually enter a lower mixing chamber in certain proportions and are mixed and dispersed and solute thereby transferred from one phase to the other. The mixed phases pass into a rotating drum and the two liquid phases are separated under centrifugal force. As it flows upward, the aqueous phase, which has a higher specific gravity, flows away from the rotating drum centre towards the drum wall and the organic phase flows towards the drum center. The two liquid phases enter into collection chambers through independent weir plates and are discharged from the machine.The centrifugal extraction machine has been widely used in liquid-liquid separation, either without solid or with small quantities of solids (Chen, Zhang, Zhuo, Chen & Li, 2008; Duan, Jing, Zhu & Chen, 2007; Duan, Zhou & Zhou, 2006). Examples of the use of the centrifugal contactor include the separation of water from crude oil, treatment of heavy oil and diesel to eliminate water and salt; the extraction of penicillin, garlic oil, malathion, and interferon; the hydrometallurgy recovery of nickel, copper and uranium; extraction of edible oil, spice, refined oil and food color; treatment and recycle of print and dyeing wastes; treatment of hydroxybenzene-contaminated sewage by multistage extraction and separation of water from oil in ship sewage."

"Gallium oxide is an important semiconductor material used in optoelectronic devices (flat panel and solar cell) catalysts and sensors. One of the methods to produce ?-Ga2O3 is the so-called hydrothermal route. It is practiced by Neo Gallium Compounds and comprises of two steps: (1) the production of mainly gallium-oxy-hydroxide in a pressure vessel by reacting metallic gallium with water at 200-220 ºC and (2) the calcination of gallium-oxy-hydroxide at 700-750 ºC to convert it into ?-Ga2O3. This paper describes this pressure hydrometallurgy process supported with relevant thermodynamic data and presents the characteristics of the ?-Ga2O3 powder produced for commercial purposes. INTRODUCTIONGallium is a relatively new metal, having been predicted by D. Mendeleev in 1871, discovered by P.E. Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875, and first commercially produced in the USA in 1943. Gallium is not rare, being more abundant in the earth crust than antimony, bismuth, molybdenum, silver and tungsten. However, few gallium minerals exist in nature, and the dispersion of gallium within other minerals add to the complexity of its recovery. In practice, gallium is found in dispersed state primarily in bauxites and in some sphalerites, and, to a much smaller extent, in some coals. At present, a very large proportion of the primary gallium in the world is recovered as a by-product of aluminum plants, mostly Bayer plants, where gallium is extracted from a bleed of the Bayer liquor (Roskill, 2011). In 2011, world production of primary gallium was estimated at 200 metric tonnes. In addition, there is a significant contribution of recycling to the overall yearly availability of the metal.Gallium exhibits fairly remarkable properties: it is liquid above 29.76 ºC, can be supercooled, and with its high boiling point (2204 ºC), is the metal with the widest liquid range. Gallium is magnetic, and is an excellent conductor of both heat and electricity. Gallium also displays a marked anisotropic electrical conductivity (Roskill, 2011). All these properties render gallium almost irreplaceable in the semiconductors (GaAs, GaN, GaSb, GaP wafers) and the optoelectronics industry (flat panel, solar cell)."

"A practical picture of the effects of stress and of the structural environment in an extraction area in a bedded deposit is described, and the main factors of ground control where principles of rock mechanics can be applied are discussed. Reference is made to early work in Europe, where systematic rock mechanics studies started in coal mines, as well as to the early work in the Canadian coal mines.During the past two decades, considerable theoretical and experimental knowledge, pursued both in the laboratory and in the field, has accumulated throughout the world, but the state of the science still does not permit application of substantiated theory such as is found in the design of above-ground structures, largely because of the complexity of the rocks. The mining engineer, as oppm1ed to the civil engineer, is constantly faced by exposures of new ground that is often subject to unpredictable discontinuities. However, the rationale already developed by rock mechanics principles and experimentation provides concepts and information that may be useful in selecting mining layouts. These concepts and existing measuring techniques can also assist ground control as mining progresses.Many of the bedded deposits, much as coals and evaporites, have pronounced deformation properties, and there are limitations in making stress measurements within short distances of mine openings or extraction areas. On the other hand, the measurement of movement of the hanging wall (roof) and footwall (floor) of roadways and extraction faces, as well as the sides of pillars, provides a most useful tool in assessing ground stability.This paper is to be regarded as a brief progress report with particular reference to Canadian applications of rock mechanics to bedded deposits."

"I WOULD LIKE TO SAY how honoured I am that I have been invited to participate in this panel discussion. I have taken the liberty of narrowing my topic somewhat so that instead of speaking on the Sociology of Professions as a whole I will speak on one aspect of it, that is, on Manpower Problems in the Minerals industry of Canada, with some reference to a new social role for the professionals engaged in this industry. This probably means that I will be encroaching on areas covered or to be covered by other speakers, but I hope that when I do so I will do so from a slightly different vantage point. That is, from a sociological perspective rather than from a historical, industrial, business or professional perspective. I plan to divide my discussion into three areas, namely: (i) problems of ownership and control; (ii) environmental problems; and (iii) manpower and recruitment problems. I do not plan nor am I able to provide clear-cut solutions to the various problems I raise under these three headings. Rather, I hope that my discussion of the problems may form the basis for an extended discussion here and elsewhere. Because of the limitations of time, I will only briefly discuss the first two problem areas noted above – (i) ownership and control and (ii) environmental problems - and I plan to concentrate on the manpower issue."

"The Eh-pH diagram of lithium-titanium-water system at 25°C, 100 °C and 200 °C was constructed. It shows that there exist thermodynamic stability areas of Li2TiO3. This indicates a thermodynamic possibility for the formation of Li2TiO3 in aqueous solution. A hydrothermal process has been applied for the preparation of Li2TiO3 using TiCl4 and LiOH•H2O as raw materials. The prepared samples were examined with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that temperature and washing condition have significant effects on the phase composition of the product. Phase-pure Li2TiO3 powders were obtained at 200°C with Li:Ti molar ratio of 2.0.INTRODUCTIONLithium-containing ceramics enriched in 6Li, such as Li2O, LiAlO2, Li4SiO4, Li2ZrO3 and Li2TiO3, are considered as tritium breeding materials (Saito et al., 1998; Roux et al., 1998; Johnson et al., 1998; Hoshino et al., 2002). In view of its admirable properties: low-activation, good thermal stability and thermal conductivity, excellent tritium release performance and reasonable lithium atom density (Kopasz et al., 1994; Roux et al., 1996; Saito et al., 1998; Wu et al., 2008), Li2TiO3 is recognized as one of the most promising candidates of tritium breeding materials. Meanwhile, Li2TiO3, as the precursor of H2TiO3-type lithium absorbent, receives more attention as the development of extracting lithium from salt lakes (Zhong, 2004; Zhang, 2010).Several synthetic techniques have been applied to prepare Li2TiO3 powders, such as solid-state methods (Lulewicz and Roux, 2002; Ramaraghavulu et al., 2011; Mandal et al., 2012), sol-gel processes (Deptula et al., 2002; Lee, 2008) and solution combustion routes (Cruz et al., 2006; Jung et al., 2006; Sinha et al., 2010). A solid-state method may produce a series of problems, including impurity contamination and difficulty in morphology control of the obtained powders, although the process involved is simple. The solgel process is prolonged and usually demands for multi-step reactions, while solution combustion route requires plenty of energy and easily causes product contamination by the fuel used. Owing to its environmentally benign and highly suitable characteristics in fabricating materials, hydrothermal technology has been widely used and became a powerful tool in the field of material synthesis (Yoshimura and Byrappa, 2008). For example, ZnO in the form of bulk single crystals, fine particles and thin films, which is an attractive photoelectric material, was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process (Sekiguchi et al., 2000; Ohshima et al., 2004). A hydrothermal technique was also used to the preparation of carbon nanotube, which possesses outstanding mechanical, structural and electric properties (Bernholc et al., 1997), and is superior to the commonly used method (Gogotsi and Libera, 2000). There, it provides an option for preparing Li2TiO3. Laumann et al. (Laumann et al., 2010) synthesized cubic a-Li2TiO3 by hydrothermal reaction at 180 °C for 18 h, using TiO2 powder, comprising of anatase and rutile, and lithium hydroxide in de-ionized water. However, the prepared a-Li2TiO3 is extremely unstable with a maximum lithium loss of 75% when treated in bathing experiment."

"The purification of rare earth elements (REE) at mining operations is traditionally accomplished by multiple chemical phase-transfer processes including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. We describe REE purification results with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) columns that were developed to improve the speed and economy of REE purification. The SPE columns have the properties of enhanced equilibration kinetics, so that residence time of a few seconds will accomplish selective chemical transfers from solution phase to solid phase. We describe the separation of REE’s as a class from leach solutions and the further purification of REE salts. INTRODUCTIONHistorically the rare earths were first chemically separated from each other and purified by fractional crystallization. This slow, cumbersome, and laborious process was not suited to commercial production. Solvent Exchange (SX) technology was applied to the problem of separating and purifying the rare earth elements when it was determined in the late 1960s that there might be commercial uses for them individually. At the same time the very slow and expensive technique of ion exchange was applied either for ultra-purification of the desired “light” rare earths, or for the recovery and purification of the tiny amounts of higher atomic numbered, “heavy,” rare earths. Solvent Exchange (SX) has today become the standard for separating the rare earths across their atomic number spectrum. Whereas the separation of the light rare earths commercially may take 30 “cascades’ in a modern Chinese plant, the total separation of all of them from each other may take up to 80 such “cascades,” and is only even “practical’ with preconcentrated feed stocks, such as those produced in China by heap-leaching techniques performed in situ on very low grade radio-nuclide free ionic absorption clays.. Ultra-pure materials of all types are produced today by ion-exchange processing of ionic species already separated by solvent exchange.Hard rock deposits and refractory residues of tin mining and residues from uranium mining have been identified outside of China with very high ratios of dysprosium and other heavy rare earths to the majority lighter ones. "The structural design of mine headframes is challenging due to the significant differences in the geometry, rigidity, and behaviour of these structures compared to conventional buildings. The differences are related to the main purpose of these structures, which is not human occupancy, but rather the support of hoisting equipment. The main objective of this paper is to present the seismic elastic behaviour of headframe structures in comparison with conventional buildings, which is the base case for the definition of seismic loads. This paper highlights the impact of backlegs on the dynamic behaviour of mine headframes, more specifically the resulting torsional sensitivity. INTRODUCTION The design of industrial structures is often governed by industrial processes rather than by architectural constraints. In ground-mounted hoisting plants, the structural configuration of headframes must allow clearances around conveyances and ropes while resisting the lateral loads associated with the hoisting equipment. Typically, these structures use backlegs to withstand the lateral loads, which leads to highly irregular structures with unconventional dynamic behaviour. The codes and standards applicable to the structural design of mine headframes in Canada are often incomplete or not adapted to the reality of practising engineers. This situation creates confusion, and engineers must look at various guidelines and international standards to support the engineering calculations required for the design of these structures. The loads resulting from the support of hoisting equipment, such as ropes and conveyances, are usually simple to calculate and are determined based on the information from manufacturer and industry related guidelines. Moreover, the loads associated with snow accumulation and wind are calculated applying the same methodology used for conventional buildings, without any major issues. On the other hand, the seismic loads are often difficult to calculate based on the methodology from the National Building Code of Canada due to the significant differences in the dynamic behaviour of the structures. The resulting structures may be either over-designed or worse, under-designed. Hence, there is a lack of uniformity in engineers’ designs. The latest edition of CSA S16-14 “Design of steel structures” includes Annex M (Informative) “Seismic design of industrial steel structures” to help designers close the gap between the requirements of traditional regulations and actual engineering practice."

"There are many critical application issues that affect all AC drives, but there are several that are absolutely mandatory for pulse width modulated (PWM) AC drives. If these rules are not followed, the drive system will have insulation, bearing EMI or noise problems. Pulse Width Output VoltageFigure 1 shows the output current of a typical pulse width modulated (PWM) drive. This is, of course, not a clean sine wave thus will have a lot of very significant harmonics. In fact, the harmonic spectrum is directly related to multiples of the carrier switching frequency plus side bands related to the basic output frequency. A typical spectrum for a PWM source bridge switching at 5 kHz is shown in Figure 2. Notice that the spectrum has multiples of the 5 kHz switching frequency and the number of side bands gets larger as the harmonic number increases.IGBT Switching TransientsWhenever we have PWM inverter switching, voltage transients are formed that propagate (usually at about half the speed of light) down the power cables to the motor just like in a radio frequency transmission line. If we do not terminate these transmission lines (motor cables) properly, the voltage pulses will be reflected when they reach the motor end and will be transiently increased up to twice their original amplitude.This transient voltage rise, shown in Figure 3, is important for three reasons:1. Insulation Voltage Stress — Higher voltage stress in the motor connecting cables and motor insulation will lead to a shorter insulation lifetime. If any of the voltage transient peaks exceed the insulation corona discharge level (partial discharge level), the insulation will gradually degrade with each voltage pulse. When it has been sufficiently degraded, it will then fail.Most new “inverter rated” motors have triple layer insulation which has a 1600 to 2000 volt partial discharge level. This will make them suitable to withstand the double voltage peak transient from a 600 volt inverter. It is wise to make sure of this fact, since a “standard” induction motor will only withstand about 1200 volts. Use of a standard motor in this application would shorten its life drastically. This can sometimes be as little as a matter of hours."

3-D virtual reality (VR) visualization has opened new opportunities for complex 3D (x, y, z), 4D (x, y, z, t) or even nD data interpretation. The integration of common earth models (3D geologic data), mine models (3D excavations and stress), extraction models (1D time sequencing or mine sequencing) and nD monitoring data (e.g., seismic event parameters) into a common mining process model provides a platform for experts in various fields to better design, evaluate, monitor and modify mine plans throughout a mine?s life; from feasibility, through operation, to closure. Viewing seismic data in a stereoscopic VR environment within a mining process model offers data interpretation processes previously unavailable at lower dimensionality. MIRARCO has developed data analysis and viewing processes specifically designed to enhance microseismic and seismic data interpretation in a collaborative, immersive VR environment; bringing mine personnel and expert consultants together to evaluate data and make strategic decisions for cost effective and safe mining. Seismic events cause immediate hazards (rockbursts) and microseismicity causes gradual hazards through its cumulative effect in rockmass degradation. The focus of this paper is on understanding seismicity from a mine safety and mine planning perspective; in particular, how seismic migration patterns relate to the rockmass response to mining. The benefits of innovation in seismic data interpretation are significant, e.g., for hazardous work area identification, allowing better formulation of re-entry policies and workforce allocation planning, as well as allocation of effective support systems to strategic areas of elevated risk. Better understanding of the overall response of a mine to extraction also facilitates mine planning and design, assisting in reducing production costs and thus in enhancing profitability.

Introduction Avital factor in the success of any coal mining operation is the method of roof support employed. A coal seam in? place has been described as the filling in a geological sandwich and the process of mining as the art of snatching the filling from the midst of the sandwich. The difficulty of this task can be appreciated -in the realization of the tremendous weight bearing on a coal seam due to overlying strata; a weight that can exert pressures of several thousand pounds per square inch. Over the years that mining has been carried on, methods have been evolved by arduous trial and error, making possible the successful extraction of billions of tons of coal. However, these time-proven methods are not enough. The constant demand for faster and cheaper production, the necessity of mining under increasingly difficult conditions, and the requirement for higher standards of safety, call for ever better and more efficient roof support. A recent and very promising development in answer to this need is that of Roof Bolting. Roof Support in General Before proceeding to the subject proper, a brief discussion of the older roof support methods is of value in illuminating the difficulties involved and the problems to be solved.

Electric arc furnace dust or EAF dust is considered as a hazardous waste but contains a significant amount of economically attractive non-ferrous metals especially zinc as zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) and zincite (ZnO). The hydrometallurgical process is one alternative choice because it has the advantage of low energy consumption. The leaching of ZnO from the dust is very easy. However, the complex major zinc compound in EAF dust is ZnFe2O4, which is very stable and insoluble in alkaline or acidic media under delicate conditions, and causes the low zinc recovery yield by hydrometallurgical process. Moreover, halogens and heavy metals in the dust are also problematic. In order to develop a new effective EAF dust treatment process, the authors have proposed "CaO addition process" as pre-dust treatment to transform all of ZnFe2O4 in the EAF dust to ZnO and Ca2Fe2O5. In this study, the selective zinc leaching from the CaO treated EAF dust with NaOH and NH4Cl solutions was carried out. The effect of temperature, reaction time and solute concentration were systematically investigated. All of zinc in CaO treated EAF dust was successfully leached into both solutions.
