"New permanent magnetic alloys have recently opened up possibilities for development of unique mineral separators. These are now making several new applications feasible. In many cases where conventional electromagnetic-induced roll separators have traditionally been used, the new permanent magnetic roll separators may reduce both over-all capital costs and operation costs.The development of the next generation of extremely powerful permanent magnets, i.e. neodymium-iron alloys, is progressing rapidly and will affect the roll separator as well as another type of magnetic separator. Permanent Magnet Roll SeparatorDesign and FeaturesDiscs of permanent magnets interleaved with soft iron discs constitute the basic magnetic roll design (Fig. I). By enveloping the magnetic roll with a thin abrasive resistant belt (Fig. 2), even highly magnetic particles are removed.The first prototype roll utilizing the new magnets was shown to have approximately equal strength as induced magnetic roll (IMR) separators. Since the initial test roll, the new separator, called the PERMROLL® , has been made twice as strong with regard to magnetic force, that is, the magnetic flux density is determined to exceed 1.7 tesla (17 kilogauss), while the magnetic field gradient is more than twice the gradient than can be practically achieved with IMR."

"Each mineral processing project requires early testwork to evaluate the economic potential of a deposit. The testwork needs to be efficient and it should provide enough information to obtain key parameters, first for a high level flowsheet selection at the conceptual and PEA stages and then, for later stages, to confirm the flowsheet selection and optimize the metallurgical efficiency of the plant. The testwork should consider all rock types or lithologies present, and carry out testwork for the purpose of sizing the major processing equipment.A successful project requires that the project stakeholders develop an efficient sample collection program to produce enough material for a scoping and pre-feasibility level program. This involves the participation of a team of geologists, mining and metallurgical engineers in the project, as early as possible, to define the deposit characteristics that need to be validated.The project schedule requires a close control of the testwork scope, procedures, and timing, but also the efficient analysis of results to provide indications of red flags that could impact circuit design as early as possible.In some cases, projects are put on hold due to fluctuations of the world economy until the return of more favorable conditions. In that scenario, prior data analysis of former testwork results could reduce significantly the amount of testwork required to restart a project. The paper will also present examples where the analysis of former testwork data was used to reduce the amount of new testwork in addition to presenting examples of latest projects where the above-mentioned test program approach was followed."

"In October 1984, Rocanville Division began using a stacking system to handle potash mill tailings. Previous to this date, mill tailings were slurried to the top of the tailings pile and allowed to debrine while flowing down the pile. With the new stacking system, slurried tailings are fed to mobile stackers. The stackers consist of cyclone packs to debrine the tailings and drag conveyors with screw discharges to deposit the tailings onto the existing pile. This paper deals with the various aspects of the project from conception to its present state.IntroductionPrevious to 1984, when the stacking project was first implemented, potash mill tailings were handled as follows. Mill tailings were first debrined to approximately 65010 solids using a cyclone cluster. The cyclone underflows were then introduced onto a vacuum scroll filter table. Here the tailings were further debrined and discharged into the disposal tank where the tailings were reslurried with reclaim brine and pumped to the tailings disposal site. At the disposal site the slurry was discharged onto the tailings pile and by a natural settling process the tailings were debrined with the brine ultimately collected in the reclaim brine ponds. The shape and profile of the tailings pile was controlled by building salt dykes to control the flow of the discharged tailings slurry. As the tailings pile grew in height, booster pumps were added to the disposal system."

"Reductive leaching of cobalt (III) from a heterogenite bearing ore has been performed. Pyrite was added to the system and simultaneously bioleached in order to provide ferrous iron as reducing agent. Within such arrangement the iron ions are continuously re-circulated inside a Fe 3+ / Fe 2+ loop. As a result Co(III) is solubilized in the presence of Fe 2+ ions in concentrations well below the stoichiometric requirement. The ore has been initially subjected to acid pre-leaching in order to guarantee that the available Co (II) has been entirely removed. Two technological parameters have been studied to show influence on the degree of cobalt leaching: concentration of ferric iron in the inoculum and the presence of bacteria. The bacterial role could be mainly viewed in supplying ferric ions in the system which chemically react with the pyrite to generate ferrous ions used as Co(III) reducing agent. Co(III) dissolution has been less efficient when the concentration of total iron in the system was low, but also when microorganisms were absent. SEM observations on leached heterogenite have evidenced bacterial attack on the mineral; however the precise role of bacterial presence on cobalt (III) leaching is still to be elucidated.INTRODUCTIONCobalt accompanies quite often copper in secondary oxidized ore deposits (Rumbu, 2013). In such associations cobalt is found both as CoII+ as well as CoIII+ (Deliens, 1974). In contrast to cobalt (III), cobalt (II) is leached relatively easy in sulphuric acid solutions. Cobalt (III) when present in mineral form belongs to the heterogenite mineral group with a simplified chemical formulae Co2O3.H2O or CoOOH. "Rare earth elements (REEs) have a series of specific properties making them invaluable in products including lighting, electronics and magnetism. The elements have been used in many commercial products, for example, turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, computers, cell phones and lasers. Heavy REEs are attracting the interests of scientists from many countries, and these elements have become critical to develop high-tech materials. Ion-adsorbed rare earth deposits were first discovered in China. The minerals are also called weathered crust elution-deposited rare earths. The particular types of deposits are distributed throughout southern China. The ion-adsorbed deposits are rich in medium and heavy REEs, accounting for more than 80% of the world’s total medium and heavy REEs production. However, the separation of heavy REEs from ion-adsorbed deposit is difficult owing to their similar chemical properties. The conventional separating technologies have caused serious pollution. A novel extraction strategy has been developed in this laboratory and is presented herein.INTRODUCTIONThe unique properties of rare earth elements (REEs) render them important in high-strength magnets, lighting phosphors, polishing compounds, and ceramics. Especially for applications that take advantage of the f-orbital electrons, substitutions outside the REE family are often difficult to impossible (Nassar, Du, & Graedel, 2015). Extracting and separating individual elements from mined ore is not easy, requiring lengthy operations to separate them, and this results in high costs and adverse effects on the environment. The low concentration of REE in the earth’s crust makes economic exploitation difficult (de Boer & Lammertsma, 2013) and the sustainability of the REEs separation industry has aroused considerable attention (McLellan, Corder, Golev, & Ali, 2014). To eliminate protons and break the dimmers in organic phosphonic acids or carboxylic acids, the saponification of acidic extractants by acid-base neutralization reactions are widely used in industrial REEs separation (Sun, Luo, & Dai, 2012a). The saponification procedure contributes to increased extractability and selectivity of acidic extractants to a considerable extent. The common industrial saponification mechanisms and technological processes are shown in Figure 1 and include ammonium saponification (saponified by NH3·H2O), sodium saponification (saponified by NaOH), calcium saponification (saponified by Ca(OH)2), and magnesium saponification (saponified by MgO). These inevitably result in wastewaters containing NH4 +, Na+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ because of the cation-exchange extraction mechanisms (Xiao, Long, Huang, Feng, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Song, Fu, Wang, Liu, Zhou, & Li, 2014; Sun & Waters, 2014)."

To achieve renovation work without noise, the authors developed techniques of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components for renovation work. In this paper, to achieve the system of pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors describe a measuring method of reinforced-concrete structure by 3D laser scanner and then describe a method of making a design of pre-cut interior finishing components with the polygon model. Using these two methods, the steps of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components consist of the following four steps: First, measure the building shape using a 3D laser scanner. Secondly, integrate a point cloud data and retrieve the markings on the floor. Then, create a polygon model of the building based on the point cloud data. Lastly, make a drywall design using a polygon model. To evaluate the technique feasibility of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have conducted an experiment of the finishing interior work of the drywall. Using pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have been able to achieve interior finishing work without noise.

Consequently, instrumentation and Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that were only practical for the very large utility or user are now available to smaller utilities and users. The information available includes sequence of event recording, trend logging, energy management cost allocation and automated load control, among others. The heart of any power monitoring system is the Digital Instrumentation Package (DIP) . These ""DIP's"" include Digital Power Meters (DPM's) and Power Demand Controllers (PDC's) as well as other specialized instrumentation packages such as Mini RTU's."

Evaluating the economic viability as well as the sustainability of the Circular Economy (CE) system requires a deep understanding of the distribution of all elements, compounds, alloys, materials etc. in flows. In this paper, the circularity of the copper value chain, including primary and secondary processing, is rigorously evaluated. The studied system comprises the metallic copper production from primary sources (from mineral to metal), copper-containing commodity production (copper is mixed with other metals) and copper recycling through secondary smelting to close the loop. This is linked to photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage. A simulation model of this system is created using HSC Sim, considering more than 30 elements (and its various compounds), 180 unit operations and 800 flows. From the mass and energy balances obtained through the simulation, an exergy analysis is conducted to evaluate the resource consumption from a second law (entropy) perspective. Additionally, these results are complemented through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the recovery of technology elements and by-products is discussed, while quantifying the losses through the value chain. Through the digitalization of the complete system, a better CAPEX and OPEX understanding of the metal recovery and losses can be obtained, as well as the associated resource consumption and environmental impacts. New flowsheets and technologies can be evaluated. Several scenarios show how the resource consumption and the environmental impacts are affected by the recovery of different materials to produce different products. INTRODUCTION A key challenge of the circular economy (CE) is the linkage and optimization of both resource and energy efficiency of the (renewable) energy infrastructure and the resource cycle depicted by Figure 1 simultaneously. In addition, the CE requires the linkage of all stakeholders as shown by Figure 1. This has been discussed in some detail by Reuter and Bartie (2019) and Reuter et al. (2019). Copper and all its associated technology elements is one of the key enabling metals that is an economical copper colored thread through CE society (Reuter & Kojo, 2014). The Metal Wheel (Figure 2) shows the linkage of and recovery of various elements associated with copper and other carrier metals. This reveals that copper acts as an important carrier metal because of its properties i.e. the wealth of technology elements it carries from geological ores, but also its capacity to act as solvent of valuable elements and thence a key closer of various complexly connected element and material cycles when these technology elements are released during copper refining. The same applies to all other carrier metals of modern CE society as shown for example recently in a lead policy brief (Blanpain, Reuter & Malfliet, 2019).

"For 25 chemical elements in electrostatically precipitated fly ash (Lingan coal-fired power station), concentration changes are studied as a function of increasing proportions of fines (ash particle diameter less than 45 micrometres). Elements that are involved when concentrations increase as the proportions of fines increase are likely to escape into the atmosphere. These are Th, U, As, S, P, Sb, Na, Ag, Zn, Pb, Ni, Ba, Sc, AI, Mo (and Bi, Ge, Ga, F and Li), i.e., more or less highly volatilized elements. Of the less volatilized metals such as Fe, Ca, Cu, Ti, K, Co, Mn (and lanthanides), certain portions presumably also escape as stack emissions. Diadochy and spinel formation in bottom slag is presented as an emission-reducing agent for certain metals.IntroductionThe Lingan coal-fired power generation plant, owned and operated by the Nova Scotia Power Corporation, produces annually about 140,000 metric tons of ash (the residual mineral content after burning coal). The tonnage is based on a 15 per cent average ash content of Cape Breton coal.For purposes of this report, samples of the hard, fused slag (bottom slag) that is accumulated at bottoms of boilers, and electrostatically precipitated fly ash (ep ash), were collected and investigated. Bottom slag is a minor component of the produced ashes.The ashes were surveyed and the presence of over 75 major, minor and trace elements is reported. From this survey, 25 elements were selected to establish elemental enrichment/depletion trends when the proportions of the less than 45 micrometre <45µm) fractions in ep ashes increase. The results are significant in that, taking the case of elemental enrichment, the elements involved are likely to escape into the atmosphere, i.e, highly volatilized elements. Depletion trends for elements are presumably associated with less volatilized elements during coal-firing. Quantification of the emission of atmospheric pollutants is not considered part of this work. ""Igneous"" minerals generated during coal combustion include spinels (found mainly in the bottom slag), quartz, glass and mullite."

After a description of the computer system and language of implementation, the logic and scope of current model sub-routines are presented. This is followed by a presentation of examples on the current applications of the model to public policy evaluation, including benefit-cost analysis, fiscal analysis and evaluation of the effects of public infrastructure investments made in support of mining projects.IntroductionThis presentation has been developed in response to a number of requests from coal mining companies and various public agencies who have indicated interest in understanding our application of contemporary analytical techniques to public policy in the coal sector. "The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. "Abstract - "Les Mines Selbaie" is a large, generally low-grade, polymetallic (Zn, Cu, Ag, Au) "giant" volcanic-associated ore deposit in the Harricana-Turgeon belt, which is part of the northern Abitibi Subprovince of Quebec. Economically recoverable mineralization occurred in three zones: the A1 (open pit), A2, and B Zones (underground). The pre-mining resource was 54.9 Mt, including 8 Mt of sub-economic, locally silver-rich massive pyrite. In the Selbaie region, calc-alkaline andesitic volcanics form the "basement." The Brouillan Volcanic Complex formed within an islandarc setting on this regional basement. Evolution of this complex involved the formation of a felsic magma chamber and the development of a large caldera structure over the Brouillan batholith. Second- order linear and sub-parallel faults and rifts developed as a result of back-arc rifting/extension. The edges of these rifts were feeders for linear felsic volcanism (similar to fissural volcanism). During felsic volcanism, the feeder zones acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids with associated pervasive potassic alteration. The alteration is characterized both vertically and laterally by well-defined quartz, sericite, K-feldspar and/or, locally, biotite halos, to produce a mushroom-shaped morphology. This K-feldspar alteration is not common in most other volcanic-associated ore deposits. Mafic dikes cut all of the geological units and appear to occupy earlier synvolcanic structures. Regional greenschist- assemblage metamorphism and pervasive deformation affect all units. Thrust faults moved part of the Brouillan batholith and basement units over the Mine Sequence. Although there is no relationship between the earlier mineralizing events and these late thrust faults, the thrust faults probably played an important role in location of ore lenses. Three types of mineralization are present: 1) copper-rich veins and hydraulic breccias; 2) disseminated and stringer, low-grade and high volume zinc-copper mineralization; and 3) finely laminated, massive, locally silver-rich pyrite mineralization within structural basins. At the bottom of these basins and at the contact of welded acid tuff (WAT) units, massive pyrite zones are locally enriched in zinc, and contain the possible vestiges of black smoker-like material. The ore metals were probably derived from leached basement andesitic volcanics in a hydrothermal system powered by one or more heat sources within the Brouillan Volcanic Complex. The Selbaie deposits are mainly characterized by: (1) the presence of small volcano-tectonic subsidence basins, which host chemical sediments and volcaniclastic materials; (2) pervasive potassic alteration; (3) locally high-grade silver mineralization (up to 1-2 kg/t Ag); and (4) the presence of random zones of Pb mineralization. The Selbaie deposits can be closely compared with the copper-rich Murgul deposits, which belong to the eastern Pontides metallogenetic province in Turkey. If conventional classification criteria for the volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (e.g., Noranda, Mattabi types, and recent subsea floor deposits) are taken into account, the Selbaie deposits still exhibit many differences in terms of alteration assemblages, physical volcanology and some styles of mineralization (low-grade and large volume). Consequently, the "Selbaie" deposits belong to a new sub-type of volcanic-associated sulfide deposit, which may be used in future exploration programs."

"Commercial coal mining has been recorded in Nova Scotia since 1863 and during this period an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of mine discard containing 10 1030% coal has been accumulated, Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Cape Breton region and most are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC), formerly DEVCO.The explosion of oil produced energy costs which created an increase in thermal coal demand as well as the desire to rehabilitate abandoned mine dumps encouraged coal reclamation. CBDC was receptive to a proposal from the Selminco Joint Venture and encouraged the building of the Princess Recovery Plant (1980) and The Summit Plant (1982).The mine dump contains scrap, waste rocks, coal and substantial quantities of fine shale. The scrap and oversize are removed and the remaining material slurried with water to a density of 1.45. The slurry is cycloned to separate the saleable thermal coal from the rejects which are returned to designated areas of the dump for contouring and revegetation.BackgroundThe recorded coal production in Nova Scotia from 1863 to 1980 was 390,000,000 short tons. This extraction was associated with an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of discarded material. This mining discard and coal washing plant reject are located in numerous, varying sized dumps throughout the mining areas. Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Sydney coal field region of Nova Scotia. The coal content of these dumps varies from 10 to 30% coal with an average of 18%.Energy CostsThe explosion o f energy costs in the mid-1970s greatly increased the sale price of thermal coal which made recovery of coal from some of the dumps economical. The environmental benefit of these operations will be the rehabilitation of the dumps upon cessation of the coal reclamation operation."

"The Chadbourne Project, located within the limits of the town of Noranda, Quebec, will make use of backfill materials to fill the voids left by the mining of stopes and pillars. A series of tests were conducted on different mixtures of slag and pyrrhotite tailings materials to evaluate their properties. The tests are described and some pertinent results are given in the paper.IntroductionThe Chadbourne Project is located in the centre of the Town of Noranda, Quebec, with houses as close as 120 m from the blasting operations. The ore is mined using the vertical crater retreat method. The voids left by mining activities will be filled. A program of pillar recovery will follow.Considering the proximity of houses and the need to recover pillars, the backfill program must be carefully laid out. No subsidence can be tolerated on surface.With these objectives in mind, a test program was undertaken by Nantar Engineering Limited and Queen&apos;s University to evaluate the possible ba ckfilling alternatives available to Chadbourne. One of the possibilities retained was the use of a backfill composed of broken slag material from the Horne Smelter and pyrrhotite tailings deposited on the Horne&apos;s pond a number of years previously.The back fill used at the Horne Mine until the mine closed in 1975 was composed of a mixture of 97% granulated slag and 3% pyrrhotite tailings. The tests leading to its use underground at the Horne Mine were described by Patton in 1952. The structural properties of the Horne backfill were ""intuitively"" known; it was agreed by all at the Horne Mine that the backfill was behaving remarkably well. Some were labeling it ""the best backfilling material in the world"". Its strength was said to be that of a weak concrete. All of the preceding indicate that the Horne backfill had never had its structural and other properties determined in the laboratory."

Résumé : la mine d?Elhammam, opération du groupe minier Marocain Managem, est située au sud de la ville de Meknes à 63 km, elle exploite un gisement de fluorine depuis 1974. La minéralisation se présente sous forme de deux filons principaux orientés N45° avec un pendage variant de 65 à 90° NW, entre ces deux filons on note la présence d?une succession de filons satellites sécants. La méthode d?exploitation pratiquée depuis le démarrage de la mine est celle des chambres magasins, elle assure une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes. Cette méthode favorisée par une très bonne compétence mécanique des épontes de la minéralisation a offert à l?exploitation une rentabilité très satisfaisante grâce à son faible coût mine. Les travaux de recherche géologique menés en parallèle à l?exploitation ont permis la découverte d?un nouveau secteur ?K-Est Gouaïda? (KEG) qui fait l?extension nord-est du gisement principal, la minéralisation de ce secteur se présente sous forme de deux filons très étendus latéralement (900 m d?extension) et présentant une puissance minéralisée irrégulière et très faible 1.2 m en moyenne, les épontes de la minéralisation sont constituées de schistes de qualité mécanique très faible. Vers la fin des années 1990, l?exploitation s?est orientée vers le développement minier du secteur KEG. Ce développement consiste à faire le choix adéquat de la méthode et de l?infrastructure minière pour l?exploitation de ce nouveau secteur, KEG. La méthode des chambres magasins, pratiquée dans le gisement principal avec un faible coût mine, n?est pas praticable dans le nouveau secteur à cause de la qualité de ses terrains, l?irrégularité de la morphologie de sa minéralisation et de la faible puissance des ses filons. Seule la méthode des tranches montantes remblayées (TMR) peut être applicable techniquement vu les spécifications suscitées de la nouvelle minéralisation, la TMR doit être appliquée sous sa variante mécanisée pour faire face au niveau exigé de la production. Après le pilotage de l?exploitation par TMR mécanisée dans le secteur KEG, il a été confirmé que cette méthode donne une grande satisfaction en matière de stabilité des terrains, sécurité, sélectivité, productivité et récupération du gisement, néanmoins elle reste pénalisée par un coût mine trop élevé pour garder le niveau de rentabilité recherché par l?exploitation d?un produit de faible valeur marchande telle que la fluorine. Dans l?objectif de rentabiliser l?exploitation du secteur KEG qui représente en réserves l?équivalent d?une durée de vie de 4 à 5 ans et d?assurer la pérennité de l?activité, l?exploitation en collaboration avec Reminex, la filiale d?ingénierie de Managem, a adapté une nouvelle variante de la TMR mécanisée dite TMR avec plan incliné sur remblai. Cette nouvelle variante de la TMR consiste à réduire au maximum les travaux dans le stérile en reconstituant un plan incliné sur le remblai à l?intérieur des filons pour faire évoluer en vertical l?exploitation des tranches en montant vers la tête d?un panneau de minerai. La variante des tranches montantes remblayées mécanisées avec plan incliné sur remblai a été imaginée et appliquer en 1978 dans la mine de fluorine de Burc située au Sud-Ouest de la France (Sicard et Mailloux, 1983). Imaginée pour une cadence annuelle de 30000 tonnes et une mécanisation très modérée cette variante a été adaptée par l?exploitation de la mine d?Elhammam en 2002 pour un haut degré de mécanisation et une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes de minerai. Cette variante de la TMR est appliquée depuis le début de 2003 dans les chantiers du secteur KEG, elle présente les mêmes avantages techniques que la TMR mécanisée classique et elle a permis la réduction du volume des travaux d?infrastructure de 17.65 m à 6.25 m de travaux par 1000 tonnes de minerai. Ceci s?est traduit par une baisse du coût technique de la mine de 34% ce qui a donné un nouveau souffle à la mine pour assurer sa production et pour poursuivre la recherche géologique d?éventuelles zones à mettre en valeur.

"In June 1983, the Computer Applications and Process Control Committee (CAPC) of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) circulated a questionnaire to coal mining, exploration and consulting companies in Canada to determine the industry&apos;s level of interest in holding a workshop-style meeting to introduce company personnel to ""state-of-the-art "" computer systems designed to carry out specific technical and management junctions. It was necessary to conduct the survey to determine the specific fields of application and the nature of training which are of most interest.Almost universally, the companies expressed interest in computer workshops and training for applications in the Canadian coal industry. The survey showed that all categories of personnel felt the need for some sort of training. Areas of specific interest identified were: exploration and geology, mine design, reserve calculations, coal mining technology, coal preparation, rock mechanics, ventilation, financial planning, and process simulation. The details of this survey together with an assessment of the significance of computer applications in the Canadian coal industry are presented in this paper."

"Titanium dioxide pigment plants using the so-called “chloride process” produce considerable amounts of chloride waste, which contains predominantly iron chloride. In most cases, this waste is dissolved in a weak hydrochloric acid solution and then neutralised. The metal content of the waste is dumped as hydroxide sludge, while its chloride content is lost in an effluent.Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium has developed a new proprietary process whereby pure metallic iron and chlorine gas are recovered from chloride waste by electrolysis. This process uses a two compartment cell separated by an anion exchange membrane to prevent iron cycling between its trivalent and divalent valence. The cathode is made of titanium Grade 7, while the anode is a dimensionally stable one of the type “metal–mixed metal oxide” (MMO) for the evolution of chlorine gas. The catholyte is concentrated and pH-adjusted iron-rich chloride solution originating from chloride waste. The anolyte is recirculating solution containing alkali or alkali earth chlorides such as MgCl2, NaCl, etc. Current efficiencies above 90% can be achieved at temperatures about 80°C using catholyte solutions almost saturated in iron chloride and other chlorides.In this paper, we discuss the details of this process, and how this could be integrated within a chloride pigment plant for the treatment of chloride wastes."
