"Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . In this investigation, TiH2 powders were coated with copper and nickel by electroless plating to delay hydrogen evolution. Copper-coated samples were found to have a mixed acicular (2D growth) and cauliflower (3D growth) morphology whereas the nickel-coated samples had a cauliflower morphology. Examinations of the coated powder cross-sections revealed that the coating thickness ranges from 0.2 µm to 4 µm. Uncoated areas on the powder surface and coating flakes unattached to TiH2 particles suggest poor adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The phase transformation undergone by the TiH2 during dehydrogenation was studied in samples taken at intermediary points in the heating cycles and examined by XRD. The findings reveal that as the powder is heated from room temperature to 800°C, it changes from TiH1.971 to Tiu and to aTi. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) was performed to study the effects of the coatings on the temperature of hydrogen release. It was found that increasing the number of plating iterations, and therefore the thickness of the coating, creates a significant shift in the temperature of gas release.

MR. J. C. NICHOLSON: The author has discussed his subject in a very thorough manner. One difficulty is the tendency to regard a 'permitted' explosive as a 'safe' explosive. There is no such article as a safe explosive; any explosive is only as safe as the man who handles it. In making up the primer, the method illustrated in the paper is alright for the ordinary explosive but not so for the sheathed explosive, for the sheathing would be punctured. MR. T. L. McCALL: I fee! quite certain that there would be little, if any, trouble from flame shots or misfires if the author's suggestions were carried out. There is a tendency on the part of the shot-firer to over-shoot, so as to bring clown more coal for the miner, and frequently a shot has not sufficient burden imposed upon it. Shooting one hole may not only lessen the burden on an adjacent hole, but may practically release it altogether, in which case the second hole should be fired with a very small charge, or perhaps it might not be necessary to shoot it at all. While the paper refers to shooting in the coal only, it should be under-stood that the instructions given are equally applicable to brushing shots. I do not wish to bring up any contentious point, but would the author say a word on cushioning with air gaps and on multiple shooting? Single shooting in rock might open up a feeder of gas which could be ignited by the ?second shot.

Slope monitoring radar has emerged in the last ten years as a leading edge tool for monitoring movements in natural and engineered slopes, thanks to its ability to rapidly measure slope movements with millimetric accuracy over wide areas in any weather conditions, obviating the need to install artificial reflectors. In recent years, slope monitoring radar has experienced significant improvements in its performances, mainly thanks to the use of different radar technology, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), able to overcome some of the limitations of the first generation of radar and to provide higher spatial resolution, longer working distances and faster acquisition time. One of the leading applications of this technology is today represented by slope monitoring within the surface mining industry. Prominent international mining groups currently employ slope monitoring radar, based either on Real Aperture Radar (RAR) and SAR technology, for active and background monitoring of open-pit walls. The main technical features of typical slope monitoring radar based on SAR technology along with their possible applications are presented in this paper along with recent case studies of successful slope monitoring in open pit mines.

Thermal transport properties of copper flash smelting flue dust have been investigated. Such values of the dust are needed to correctly model the process and to optimize its heat recovery performance. Dust accretions on heat recovery boiler walls may have a significant influence on the boilers heat transfer efficiency. Measurements of the thermal transport properties have been made for industrial flue dust and for pure sulphate components. The measurements have been conducted at temperatures up to 400 °C and the effect of porosity on these properties has also been investigated. The results indicate that the flue dust and the sulphate components are effective thermal insulators and the dust build-up on the boiler walls is likely to greatly decrease the heat transfer efficiency of the boiler.

Copper mining operations have increased in Iran in the past decades due to price increases and potential for creating jobs in developing countries. Iran consists of many copper mines. The mining operations have a positive economic impact on the region, but may also be the cause of adverse environmental effects. Environmental aspects and the health impact of respirable particulates on the communities and agricultural production in the immediate vicinities have been under scrutiny by the regulatory agencies to ensure sustainable development. The impact of an open-pit mine on the air quality and extent of particulate pollutant dispersion in different directions and times is the focus of this paper. The results of the modeling have been validated through ambient air monitoring. Monitoring stations were installed in different areas within the mine unit operations and around it including background areas where PM10 values were 7 µg/m3. Outside the Complex, particulate concentrations were monitored in 9 different stations and up to 25 km distance. Modeling of point, area, and volume sources was conducted using a 9- year meteorological database. The results showed that particulate quantity decreases rapidly below local standard value of 150 µg/m3 at 2.5 km around the mine and the main pollution is due to the crusher and tailings dump areas. Model outputs were compared to the actual values measured by the air quality monitoring network including villages and crop fields. High overall correlation of about 76% was obtained for most of the locations but lower values were reported for more complex terrain in the region. Remedial actions recommended included road water spraying and better management practices to avoid overloading trucks.

The Engineering Department at Flin Flon has the following responsibilities: 1. Underground Surveying. 2. Open-Pit Surveying and Supervision of Blasting. 3. Mine Geology and Examination of Prospects. 4. Design of Plant Additions and Improvements. 5. Miscellaneous Field W ork, Reports, etc. The entire surface plant, as well as the underground workings, are located by co-ordinates based on a triangulation system covering an area approximately one mile long by one-half mile wide. The origin of this system and one end of the base-line is the southwest corner of Township 67, Range 29, west of the Principal Meridian. The bearing of the base-line was determined from the township boundary, which runs true north, so that all other bearings are almost astronomical. This is a great convenience when our surveys must be tied to mineral claims, rights-of-way, and land subdivisions. As the base-line extends across Flin Flon lake, its measurement across smooth ice was simple and accurate. The length, slightly over 1,600 feet, has been adjusted for the temperature and tension of the standard tapes used and checked sufficiently to ensure a maximum error of 1 : 15,000. Each angle was repeated ten times, but as no special refinements were used, errors of as much as four or five seconds are possible. The elevation of the origin of the triangulation system was approximately 1,050 feet above sea level. The use of this true elevation in our surveys would have resulted in negative elevations underground as soon as the mine reached a depth greater than 1,050 feet. To avoid this complication we therefore added 4,000 feet to this elevation. The collar of the Main shaft, for example, which is actually 1,072 feet above sea level, appears in our records as at elevation 5,072. Underground surveying, which follows standard practice, is done by two mine surveyors who share three helpers. The meridian is taken underground from two wires hung in either of the two vertical shafts.

Rapid data collection (approximately 1000 readings per hour) and advanced signal processing allow for efficient use of conventional and novel arrays and the removal of natural and cultural noise. What is unique about the system is its electrode and borehole cable design, which allows seamless integration of borehole and surface measurements. EarthProbe operates in four configurations - surface, borehole, borehole-to-borehole, and surface-to-borehole (a variant of the borehole-to-borehole configuration).

The development and maintenance of underground roadways are increasingly important aspects of the modern mining process. With the trend toward automation and track-less mining, roadbeds capable of with standing increased wheel loading have proven necessary to maintain high vehicle speed and reduced maintenance costs. Concrete has been used successfully on some roadways in order to obtain the required characteristics. However, this solution usually involves unacceptable expense. The objective of the Road Router project was to create a drift floor profiling machine capable of cutting a smooth surface out of the existing rock floor of development drifts and ramps. This surface would provide a durable, high strength, low rolling resistance roadbed that would allow for reduced operating cycle times and lower maintenance costs of scoops and haulage trucks. The Road Router has the potential to offer an alternative to concrete with substantial cost savings.

The tensile properties and microstructure of AZ91 Mg alloy before and after equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE), and the fracture behavior during tensile testing for as-extrusion and ECAE AZ91 were investigated. The alloy was performed ECAE from one to eight passes at 498K. The elongation decreased with the pass number increasing after ECAE. Grains were refined, partial coarse ß-Mg17Al12 phase fell to pieces, fine ß-Mg17Al12 precipitated in the AZ91 Mg alloy after ECAE. During tensile test the a-Mg/ ß-Mg17Al12, a-Mg/Al8Mn5 interface and the grain boundaries in a-Mg matrix acted as the crack initiation sources. The frequency of micro-cracks at the a-Mg/ß-Mg17Al12 interfaces and grain boundaries increased after ECAE, which accelerated the growth and coalescence of the micro-cracks during tensile test and resulted in the decrease of elongation of AZ91 Mg alloy by ECAE.

"Coupon testing has been used to investigate stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of rockbolts in a laboratory based experimental program. This program has focused on the use of ASTM G39 three- and four-point bent beam coupon specimens, immersed in an acidified sodium chloride test solution containing hydrogen sulfide. The specimens were loaded to a range of stresses from zero, to just above the materials yield strength. It was found that only specimens above an applied stress of 580MPa failed by means of SCC, showing that rockbolts loaded to near their yield strength may be susceptible to SCC in-situ.INTRODUCTIONStress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a failure mechanism that affects material through the growth of hairline cracks when exposed to a corrosive medium while under stress (Jones and Ricker, 1999). SCC has been found to affect rockbolts in the Australian underground coal mining industry and has the capacity to cause the catastrophic failure of ground support systems, potentially leading to falls of ground in underground excavations, injury or death to mine personnel, damage or loss of equipment, and loss of productivity through the loss of roadway access (Crosky et al, 2002).Coupon testing utilises small scale samples that are intended to be indicative of the behaviour exhibited by a material in-situ (ASTM G39). The small scale, and usually high surface area to volume ratio of coupon specimens mean that they corrode at faster rate proportional to their mass, greatly reducing testing times. The small scale of the specimens allows them to be more easily prepared and handled, loaning them to mass manufacturing techniques.A previous study conducted by Vandermaat et al (2012b) into the use of three- and four-point coupon testing in-situ in an underground coal mine failed to result in SCC of the specimens. This paper serves as a follow up laboratory investigation in order to understand why these specimens did not fail. Previous studies into the SCC in rockbolts carried out by Gamboa and Atrens (2003) determined that rockbolt steel has a critical stress threshold of approximately 90% of the material ultimate tensile strength (800-900MPa). This study will focus on this critical stress threshold as a possible explanation for the lack of failure in the in-situ specimens (Vandermaat, 2012b)."

PILLAR extraction at the Sullivan Mine bas been in progress for over twenty-five years and bas .involved progressively larger pillars. The largest pillar blasted to date exceeds one million tons and is described in this paper. This blast is believed to be one of the largest to take place entirely under-ground. The Sullivan Mine, owned by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, is located in the southeastern corner of British Columbia on the east flank of the Purcell range overlooking the twenty-mile wide Rocky Mountain Trench (Figure 1). The orebody is a bedded replacement deposit in argillites, varying in thickness up to 300 feet, but averaging about 80 feet. Above the 3900 Level, the dip varies from nearly horizontal to 40 degrees; be-low the 3900 Level it varies from 45 to 20 degrees (Figure 2). The property of the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company, Limited is located at Flin Flon lake, 85 miles northwest of The Pas, Manitoba, on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary. The area is at latitude North 54°, and is approximately 1,000 feet above sea level. The ore-body occurs in amygdaloidal greenstones, which are to be referred to the earliest basic volcanic flows in the district. It was discovered in an outcrop on a point of land jutting into Flin Flon lake, and subsequent diamond drilling proved that it extends under the lake both to the north and south of the point of discovery. After the taking of soundings from the ice during the winter months, it was estimated that l,000,000 tons of overburden, mainly mud and clay, would have to be removed to expose the underlying ore. Flat diamond-drill holes indicated that the ore-body was separated into more or less independent lenses by horses of unmineralized greenstone, and that in places the overall width, including horses of waste, reached 450 feet. These several] conditions were the main factors influencing the management in their decision to adopt an open-cut method for the mining of the upper portion of the ore-body. Before it was possible to commence stripping operations, it was necessary to dam-off the eastern portion of Flin Flon lake, instal pumps, and de-water the dammed-off area. Dams for this purpose were constructed of mine waste rock and clay filler from nearby hillsides. Material for the bottoms of the dams was taken across Flin Flon lake in hopper-bottom barges. Trestles were then built on the dam bottoms and dams were complete by the time trackage was available. De-watering commenced in April, 1930, and was completed by the latter part of May of the same year. Estimated pump output for the period was roughly four billion gallons. Two Morris 10-inch dredging pumps were used, direct-connected to 250 h.p. electric motors. Individual pump capacity was rated at 3,000 g.p.m. against a 150-foot head. Average head for the operation was 50 feet, which increased the total output considerably. The pumps were mounted on floating barges in cribbings of piling driven at the lowest points in the lake bottom.

"The property of Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, is in the Gaspe Peninsula some 60 miles west of the town of Gaspe and 20 miles in from the north coast. The Copper Mountain deposit was first discovered in 1921 and first optioned and drilled by Noranda in 1938. The Upper Needle Mountain showings a mile south were found in 1938, but it was not until after a delay of 10 years that the more important deep ore at Needle Mountain was located by drilling. Production started in 1955, and the smelter commenced operation in December. Mining is by open stope methods with first production coming from the Lower Needle Mountain orebody, of which only a small portion has been exposed in underground openings.Stratigraphy and AlterationThe country rock is composed of limy siltstones of Devonian age. Away from alteration these are dark and generally carbonaceous. Throughout the drilled area numerous narrow layers of tuffaceous fragmental material occur, and such beds are found to provide excellent horizon markers by virtue of their uniform thickness and wide lateral distribution. These markers are valuable for stope control in mining the bedded replacement deposits.Intruding the sediments at Copper Mountain are porphyry dykes, and one drill hole encountered granite 1,400 feet below the valley. Solutions responsible for the rock alteration and ore deposits seem to have emanated from this intrusive centre.On the mine claims strong hydrothermal alteration has completely obscured the original character of the sediments. The unaltered formations are all very similar in appearance, but following alteration rocks that are very dissimilar in physical characteristics are produced, and such differences have an important influence on ore deposition. The alteration effects are known to extend over a vertical range in excess of 3,000 feet and have a surface area of two square miles. All known ore bodies are within the zone of alteration. In this, rocks are strikingly bleached to a white colour in contrast to the normal dark-coloured sediments, and are much harder and more abrasive, with bedding often obscured. The first effect of alteration is driving off of carbonaceous matter, followed progressively by silicification in the acid rocks and by the formation of lime silicates in the lime rocks, with an accompanying gain in silica and a corresponding loss in lime. Extensive analysis has shown that there is an actual addition of silica involved in the alteration."

Since the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gap (1). Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Franc;ois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the King of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors: - the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region; - the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry; - the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, md1spensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace; - the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery.

Strainbursts in brittle rock are common to deep underground mines. The state of stress at the boundary of mine openings is dictated by a biaxial stress/loading condition. This paper reports the results of a series of biaxial compression tests carried out on 100 mm cubic samples of norite rock, under different horizontal-to-vertical stress ratios. The results indicate that the biaxial compressive strength is considerably higher than the uniaxial one. It is found that the norite sample behaviour under biaxial loading mirrors field behaviour where shearing and progressive spalling of the opening boundary are observed prior to strainbursting. Sample failure is initiated by rock spalling at the sample free faces, i.e. in the plane of biaxial loading. Finally, it?s the out-of-plane shear failure mechanism that causes the sample to collapse. Shear failure takes place violently and abruptly and is accompanied with considerable audible noise.

Gold present in arsenopyrite matrices is refractory and requires highly oxidative pretreatments in order to obtain acceptable degrees of extraction. However, these release many byproducts that are harmful to the environment. In the present work, a high-grade arsenopyritic ore was pretreated with different solutions, containing hydroxide ion, EDTA, oxalic, tartaric, or citric acids, to improve gold extractions in a posterior leaching step. The pretreatments were carried out at room temperature for 24 hours with a respective ligand concentration of 0.25 M. Once completed, the residue was leached in a thiosulfate solution to quantify the effect of the pretreatment on gold extraction. Only 29% of the gold content was leached, with very slow kinetics, in the untreated mineral. However, after pretreatment with tartaric or citric acid, the kinetics improved, although the percentage of gold extraction only reached 42-45%. The highest gold recovery, with very rapid kinetics, was found with the oxalic acid or the hydroxyl ion pretreatment (70 and 62%), respectively, but also corresponded to the most arsenic co-dissolution.

With little dismantling, ultrasonic testing techniques can be applied to. determine the conditions of shafting and linkage in hoisting equipment, mining equipment and other miscellaneous mining equipment."

"The Rexspar uranium deposits are located near Birch Island in central British Columbia. The property lies within the Omineca crystalline belt of the Cordilleran Orogen. Gneiss, schist, tuffaceous and porphyritic trachyte are the main rock types encountered on the property. These rocks are of pre-Late Triassic or probable Mississippian age.Lenticular bodies of mica and pyrite-rich rock are the host of three closely spaced uranium deposits and are found close to a fluorite deposit. The altered trachytic rock as well as the fluorite and uranium deposits are found in the upper part of the trachyte unit. The latest tonnage estimates are 1,441,820 tonnes averaging 23.46% CaF, for the fluorite deposit, 490,966 tonnes of 0.084% U10afor the 'W' deposit, 164,290 tonnes of 0.074% UP8 for the ""B"" deposit and 459,124 tonnes of 0. 071 o/o UP8 for the ""BD"" deposit.A hydrothermal replacement origin was first proposed for the fluorite and uranium deposits. The mineralizing and altering solutions would have been genetically related to a felsic batholith outcropping a few kilometres south of the property. Another hypothesis has been proposed more recently. A volcanic centre has been tentatively identified in the upper part of the trachyte unit, close to the mineral deposits. The fluorite and uranium deposits could possibly be volcanogenic, rather than related to the Cretaceous felsic batholith.IntroductionFluorite and uranium mineralization occur on the property of Consolidated Rexspar Minerals and Chemicals Ltd. in central British Columbia. The exploration and development works executed over the years are summarized in this paper. The deposits and their geological environment are described but the origin of the mineralization has not been definitely established."

"With declining feed grade and increased production targets, it became necessary to upgrade Key Lake's eight stage counter current decantation (CCD) circuit. Following laboratory trials, mill operations recognized that dilution of the feed slurry and buffering of the feed density variations would improve thickener throughput. Plant testing resulted in the installation of Outokumpu's Supaflo ""Floe-Miser"" system. The circuit's flowsheet, instrumentation and control strategy were also upgraded along with the thickener feedwell modifications. The paper will also discuss these modifications and the implementation of the current control strategy.IntroductionCameco Corporation's Key Lake operation is the largest single uranium producer in the world. Current production is fourteen million pounds of uranium oxide (U 308) per year. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining with Cameco as the operator.The mine is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca basin. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.Process DescriptionThe Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants: crushing and grinding; leaching and counter current decantation (CCD); solvent extraction; yellowcake precipitation and ammonium sulphate crystallization; and bulk neutralization (Figure 1 -Simplified Mill Flowsheet).
