Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

Flinders Power, formerly NRG Flinders, is considering the possible use of low rank coal from Lake Phillipson, South Australia (SA) in its power stations at Port Augusta, SA. Typically, this coal contains about 35% moisture and 10% ash. Unfortunately, it also contains high levels of sodium (1% Na) and chloride (0.95% Cl) with a Na2O level in ash of 18.9%. Such levels cause serious problems during coal combustion, making the use of as-mined coal impractical for power generation. This paper describes the development of an aqueous leaching technique to remove 90% of the sodium and chloride and to yield a product with a Na2 O level in ash of less than 3%. Small-scale agitation leaching tests with good quality tap water at ambient temperatures showed that the coal needed to be crushed to minus 5.6 mm to obtain maximum removal of water-soluble sodium and chloride in 30 min. Leaching kinetics, but not the ultimate removal of salt, were enhanced by the use of higher temperatures (up to 150°C), but this was deemed uneconomic. Varying the pulp density between 20% and 50% had little effect on extractions and there was no benefit in multiple stage water washing. The best results by water leaching were 69%~74% extraction for sodium and 95%~97% for chloride, meaning that the sodium removal was well below the target level. From SEM examinations of the leached product it was concluded that the remaining sodium was organically bound to the carbon atoms in the coal. Further tests using aqueous solutions containing cation exchange additives such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) or ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sulphuric acid (H2SO4) showed that significantly enhanced sodium extractions were possible and target specifications were met. Two options, namely a single-stage and a two-stage leach, were then investigated. In a single-stage leach with additive, minus 5.6 mm coal was leached at 33%~50% solids for 30 min at ambient temperature and then filtered and washed with fresh water. This gave a sodium removal level of about 81% and a Na2O level in ash of about 5%. These levels do not quite meet tar-get specifications. In a two-stage leach, the coal was first leached with water alone without an additive as in the single stage leach, and the washed residue re-leached under similar conditions for about 5 min with an additive (CaCl2), and then filtered and washed. This gave a cumulative sodium removal of 96% and a Na2O level in ash of 1.4%~2.4%. These levels are well within target specifications.

This method takes advantage of both strong flexibility and good reliability of fuzzy logic and high precision of PID. With the very stable and reliable process instruments, the control system has a good control performance and results the stable control of flotation column.

Annually at least 5% percent of world power consumption is involved in the process of ore dressing while ore processing technology. Such rate of energy consumption demonstrates the importance of a given process study in the human life-sustaining activity. Examining of interparticle destruction being under external stress pressure in ore responses this problem solution at the greatest degree. The technology of destruction in the roll press is of great interest. The use of the given equipment allows to save a significant amount of energy by means of the built-in ore destruction mechanism. Examination of stress-strain fields which determine the level of interparticle destruction between the rolls in the ore layer enables to specify both level of ore destruction and power consumption. The mathematical computer modeling for the deformable environment use based on the finite-element method (FEM) allows to carry out the given research. We use FEM solution for elastic contact problem for the most complete study of power consumption employed in ore and interparticle destruction. This problem solution allows also to examine energy consumption expenses spent for ore crushing in the roll press. Also we have identified the mechanism of ore in a layer of the particles under pressure roller press. It is established that high level of performance and reduction of energy consumption in interparticle destruction of ore in the layer due to the appearance of the gradient of normal stresses in contact of particles of mineral raw materials. The algorithm has been developed determining crushing product particle size distribution of fractured particles in the layer, using the Bond’s theory of crushing. The use of our FEM model reduces the time of equipment selection for new plant and at the design stage to reduce the risks of errors in the choice of roller presses.

The results of mineralogical?technological studies of PGM mineralization in zoned mafic?ultramafic complexes of the Ural?Alaskan type are given. The most important technological specificity of PGM mineralization hosted in dunites is its occurrence only in the form of free mineral species with predominance of Fe?Pt alloys (ferrous platinum, isoferroplatinum, and tetraferroplatinum). Technological properties, grain size, and good opening of PGM ore in grain size class +80 µm make it possible to concentrate ore using gravity methods with stadial comminution and between cycle separation of relatively large grains and nuggets into high-grade concentrates at the early stage of disintegration. "The search for energy efficient technologies for comminution processes is constant in mineral processing studies, since those processes represent a major percentage of operational costs. In this context the use of stirred mills is increasing, especially for ultrafine grinding. Although many authors claim that these new equipment are more efficient than the conventional ball mills, there were very little chances to prove that in a practical way, since there are few industrial circuits where those technologies perform the same duty. Therefore, the regrinding circuit of Germano second concentrator offers an interesting opportunity: a vertical mill operating in parallel with two ball mills. During almost two years of operation, several sampling campaigns were conducted to evaluate the vertical mill performance and to compare the operational data of the three mills. The industrial data was also compared to jar mill tests results, which are monthly conducted in Samarco labs in order to predict the specific energy consumption required by the ore fed to these circuits. The vertical mill demonstrated the same ability to achieve the product specifications of the ball mills while proved to be able to reduce the medium specific energy consumption in about 40%."

"The influences of citric acid (CA) on the flotation behavior of cassiterite using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) as the collector were studied via single mineral flotation tests, contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations in this paper. The results of single mineral flotation tests revealed under the conditions that pH=4 and the dosage of SPA 100 mg/L, the recovery of cassiterite reached 76.78%. The addition of 20 mg/L AC decreased the recovery by 12.42% at pH=4. Contact angle measurements demonstrated the adsorption of CA prior to SPA made the cassiterite more hydrophilic. The results of zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations indicated the chemisorption of C6H7O7- and C6H6O72- filled parts of the Sn site on cassiterite surface and prevented the SPA from getting adsorbed. The hydrophilic effect of AC was stronger than the hydrophobic effect of SPA and the flotation of cassiterite was crippled. INTRODUCTION Tin is an important metal which is widely used in medical instruments, marine engineering materials, electronic and electrical devices, welding, weapon manufacturing and organotin compounds industries (Angadi et al., 2015). Cassiterite is the only mineral from which the tin can be extracted, thus it is of great importance to efficiently exploit the cassiterite mineral. Flotation is an indispensable method for the recovery of cassiterite (Li et al., 2015). However, cassiterite is usually in association with many other gangue minerals which are of similar floatability, such as quartz, calcite, fluorite, iron oxide, wolframite, scheelite and tourmaline (Sreevinas, 1997). So some modifiers are necessary in the cassiterite flotation process. The amounts of the modifiers used in the flotation must be judicious and the overmuch modifiers may cripple the recovery of cassiterite (Parsonage et al., 1987). Nevertheless, the research about the effects of the modifiers on the flotation behavior of cassiterite has been rarely reported. "Triboelectric separation of ilmenite ore based on the tribocharge differences between ilmenite and gangue minerals was conducted in this study. Triboelectric characteristics of ilmenite and its associated minerals were studied using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), pentatricopeptide repeats (PPR), copper, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), stainless steel (SS), teflon and quartz glass (QG) tribochargers in lab triboelectric unit. Results demonstrated that the ilmenite particles tribocharged positively while gangue minerals tribocharged negatively using PVC as tribocharger. The particle size also has a significant effect on tribocharge, and the -0.125+0.074 mm is the optimal size fraction of triboelectric separation. Charge-mass ratios of minerals increase with the increases of tribocharging length, but the increasing rate gradually reduce. At 1.5 m tribocharging length, charge-mass ratios of ilmenite, quartz, feldspar and mica are up to 6.07 nC/g, -6.05 nC/g, -4.30 nC/g and -4.56 nC/g, respectively. Based on the triboelectric characteristics of each mineral, triboelectric separation of ilmenite was conducted, and the grade of ilmenite ore increased from 15.47% to 28.40%. INTRODUCTION As a transition metal titanium plays an irreplaceable role in medical, aerospace and materials due to its light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. Pure titanium dioxide is an excellent white pigment and is widely applied in industries of paint and textile. Ilmenite is the main raw material for titanium industry. For the beneficiation of ilmenite, series methods have been proposed, such as the application of dry magnetic and wet gravity separations to separate the ilmenite from the zircon and rutile. Electrostatic separation is extensively used in the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands for the recovery of rutile, zircon and ilmenite while flotation is used to separate fine ilmenite (Mehdilo et al., 2014; Fan et al., 2014). Compared with flotation and gravity separation, electrostatic separation does not consume water, and native properties of materials will not be changed and energy consumption will be reduced (Wang et al., 2014). Thus, the wide application of electrostatic separation and other dry separation methods is a trend in separation and purification industry, especially in water-scarce areas."

"With flotation cells scale-up, the performance of flotation cells is increasingly variated for short-coming and dead zones existing. The residence time distribution which shows the movement of tracers can assess the unexpected flows such as short circuit and dead zone in a flotation cell. In this paper, the residence time distribution of pilot flotation cell is investigated with CFD simulation. Based on the theoretical model, the short-coming probability and dead zone probability are quantitative. The ideal average residence time is similar with the actual average residence time. The mixing effect of the flotation cell approaches the ideal continuous stirred tank reactor. The operating parameters such as speed and feed velocity have complicated influence on residence time distribution. The research would be helpful to understanding flow in flotation cell and improving performances of flotation cell.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is a method which purifies minerals according to difference of physical and chemical surface characters of different mineral particles (Shen, Z., Chen J, 2012). Flotation cell is a key equipment for froth flotation method. Residence time distribution is an important fluid hydrodynamics which could reveal the flow of pulp, mixing of particles and air bubbles. In the flotation cell, the ideal average residence time of pulp could obtain easily. But the fluid differential units would be different flow paths. The residence time of the fluid differential units is variation and would be longer or less than the average residence time. The residence time distribution would reveal the mixing effect and predict the not ideal flow in the flotation cell such as shorting cutting, dead zone, etc. As we know, the shorting cutting and dead zone would be decreased the real flotation time and it is disadvantage to better flotation effect, especially for large flotation cell. It is impossible to eliminate the not ideal flow totally. It is very important to reveal and decrease the shorting cutting and dead zone probability in the flotation cell."

Magnetization in slurry (MIS) of weakly magnetic minerals by iron ions was investigated. The magnetic seeds (strongly magnetic particles) were synthesized by ferruginous chlorides directly in slurry instead of previous preparations of magnetic seeds by finely grinding mineral magnetite or specially synthesizing them separately in an aqueous solution. In this way, the growth of the seeds and their adsorption on the minerals simultaneously take place in the same slurry. That after MIS the recovery of weakly magnetic mineral limonite in a magnetic separator increased means the formation and adsorption of magnetic seeds on the surface of iron mineral limonite. The magnetization effect was evaluated by limonite recovery at a magnetic strength of 3.500 Gs in a magnetic separator. Mineral limonite was properly magnetized in the following slurry condition: molar ratio of Fe3+ to Fe2+1:3, slurry temperature of 45 °C and pH 10.5. The selectivity of the magnetization between minerals limonite and quartz was improved by adding surfactant sodium oleate.

Adsorption of Thiooxidans ferrooxidans and Mycobacterium Phlei on the surface of pyrite and galena was studied. From the experimental results, it was observed that Mycobacterium Phlei adsorbed preferentially on pyrite than on galena at neutral and alkaline pH values, while Thiooxidans ferrooxidans is not at all pH range, and the scanning electron microscopy photograph also indicated that. FTIR and XPS of two strains of bacteria indicated that there are much functional groups on surface of them, such as O?H, N?H, C-O, C?N, C?O etc, but S-O group occurred on Thioox-idans ferrooxidans cell surface and the P-O group appeared on Mycobacterium Phlei cell surface, and the content of C?O?H and C?O?C groups on Mycobacterium Phlei cell surface is higher than that on Thiooxidans ferrooxidans cell surface, this also been known from UVS investigation. The affinity of these groups to metal ions on sulfide minerals is able to explain the selective adsorption.

This study is concerned with the behavior of bubble clusters in a well-controlled turbulent flow. We used a specially designed cell where the bubble aggregates could be formed and exposed to breakage by a rotating impeller. The effects of impeller speed and the concentration of collector on cluster behavior were studied. It was found that the size of the clusters increases with the concentration of collector used. We also found that although the clusters could easily be destroyed under the action of impeller, they could reform, especially at lower impeller speeds. It was observed that the size of the bubbles arriving into the impeller region in the absence of particles before breakage was considerably higher than the size of the clusters formed at the same impeller speed. It appears that both cluster breakage and re-formation take place simultaneously, and the extent of formation and regrowth is mainly determined by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the impeller speed.

Selective separation of alumina, silica, calcite and apatite from hematite was achieved through microbiologically induced flotation and flocculation in presence of bacteria (B.subtilis) and that of hematite from apatite after interaction with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Bacterial and yeast metabolites containing extracellular proteins were characterized from mineral-grown cell free extract. Bacteria and yeast can adhere to mineral surfaces and influence subsequent separation of the minerals. Bacteria functioned as a stronger depressant for hematite, while yeast cells depressed apatite at neutral pH. Selective affinity of the bacterial and yeast cells towards the mineral surface was observed through adsorption studies. Extracellular proteins (EP) were isolated from B.subtilis and yeast. The protein profile of the EP of bacterial and yeast cells grown in presence and absence of minerals was studied. This study has demonstrated the utility and amenability of microbially-induced mineral beneficiation of iron ores through bacterial and yeast cells and their metabolic by products.

"Gold has been a material in high demand since the dawn of humanity. After hundreds of years of exploitation, the increasingly search for gold occurs in lower grade deposits with greater extraction difficulty. Therefore, for maximum efficiency, deep knowledge of the characteristics of these minerals and their associations is crucial, which is acquired through an accurate and rigorous routine of process mineralogy and batch extraction tests. The industrial gold process extraction occurs by gravity concentration, sulphides flotation and cyanidation. For gravity concentration, it is fundamental to establish the proportion of free or coarse gold grains and its association to heavy minerals; regarding flotation, the most relevant data are the proportion of gold associated to sulphides and their liberation by the surface area; for cyanidation, it is crucial to evaluate gold accessibility and the kinetics of leaching. Thus, the characterization of gold associations and liberation is vital to establish the plant design, to optimize operating plants and to reduce gold losses. Our aim is the characterization of gold occurrence in low-grade Brazilian deposits with complex mineralogical assemblages to support processing flowchart definition and to predict metallurgical recoveries. Gold distribution in light and heavy minerals was evaluated by heavy liquid separation and the occurrence of gold in free or locked particles was carried out on heavy products by SEM-based automated image analysis using the MLA system. All the products of heavy liquid separation were cyanidated in head samples with different milling conditions to evaluate the reaction kinetics and maximum recovery."

"The purpose of this research was aimed at increasing recovery of metals from rebellious sulfide polymetallic ores of nonferrous and rare metal deposits. The ores under consideration have common processing features, including textural and structural complex characteristics, irregularity of impregnation and wide range of grain size, up to nanoparticle size, variable complex mineral composition, low content of precious metals etc. This all predetermines the need for advanced processing schemes with deep selective liberation and separation of minerals with intercycle release into rough concentrate and fractional products with the use of multi-stage cycles of individual dressing, based on an optimum combination of various integrated beneficiation and hydrometallurgical processes. The application of existing standard processes does not enable the production of high-grade selective concentrates without reducing the recovery rate due to incomplete separation of fine mineral intergrowths and overgrinding of brittle ore and rock minerals.The combined beneficiation processes for such type of resources, aimed at increasing recovery of nonferrous, rare, and precious metals are based on flotation methods in combination with gravity concentration to produce rich rough collective or selective concentrates, comprising readily floatable mineral fractions. At the same time, hardly recoverable and non-separable mineral associations are released into separate concentrated products for following dressing by individual processes. The proposed combined process provides for successive selective liberation of minerals with release of rich readily recoverable mineral fractions at the preparation and ore beneficiation stages. The hardly recoverable mineral associations shall be released in subsequent operations with the use of dressing, based on a combination of beneficiation and pyro- and hydrometallurgical methods."

Previous research on particle damage during high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) crushing was limited by the resolution of point-projection micro CT systems and the extent of damage was described by the percent of particles cracked for different crushing methods as determined at a voxel resolution of 40 microns. With recent advances in X-ray optics, the resolution afforded with point-projection micro CT systems has been improved by at least an order of magnitude using a lens-based X-ray micro CT system. With the use of X-ray lens imaging the resolution is determined by the lens rather than by the spot size of the micro-focus X-ray source. The high resolution X-ray micro CT (HRXMT) system made by Xradia with a voxel resolution of less than 1 micron is now being used for the characterization of particle damage during HPGR crushing. In this way, the direct 3-D determination of the internal damage of crushed ore particles which vary from 40 mm down to 100 microns in size is being studied at a voxel resolution of a few microns. The number, size, and shape of cracks can now be measured at this improved resolution and for the first time the specific crack surface area distributions of the crushed product can be calculated from HRXMT images using specially designed software tools for 3D analysis. Results from selected crushing operations are presented. Copper ore particles from HPGR crushing at high pressure (6 N/mm2) are severely damaged having crack specific surface areas as great as 10 mm2/mm3. The feed ore is the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation of pyrite tailings, containing TFe47.47%, S19.41% and SiOpyrrhotite. The exploratory tests showed that using a process of flotation followed by magnetic separation could respectively obtain a sulphur concentrate of S 31.08% with a recovery of 82.89%, and an iron concentrate of TFe 59.97% and S 9.52%with a recovery of 30.93%. The reason of iron concentrates with high sulphur grade was that the sulphur grade of flotation tailings was 7.03%. So enhanced flotation for pyrrhotite was investigated in this research. Results show that when the natural pH of ore pulp varied from 5.5 to 6.0, a reagent combination of FS, LH, and BJ displayed the optimum flotation performance for pyrrhotite. After comparisons made on different flotation processing, the previous flotation flow of ?one roughing, one cleaning, one scavenging system and middling reprocessing?, was found, among others, to have the best flotation effect, as the grade and recovery of sulphur concentrate were 31.08% and 82.89%, respectively, and sulphur content of the flotation tailings was 7.03%. The above results indicated it was difficult to raise further the effect of flotation desulphurization. The authors therefore suggested that oxidizing roast should be adopted following the magnetic process for the purpose of further desulphurization. Besides, flue gas containing SO2 8.25%. Europe retains a modest position in world mining activity in terms of scale of production and mineral reserves but maintains a non-negligible role in the world mining industry. The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.
