A new technique has been developed for comprehensively recovering tantalum niobium tungsten ore by adoption of stage grinding, stage separation, combination of flotation and gravity separation, gravity separation for coarse particles, flotation for fine ones, combination of ore-dressing and hydrometallurgy. The new type and high efficiency combinative collector mainly composed of benzyl hydroxamic acid is firstly used to treat tantalum niobium and tungsten slime, besides the new type equipment for gravitational separation ?YTF-C shaking table for fine particles is adopted to treat flotation rough concentrate, hence having notably enhanced both recovery and concentrate grade of fine tantalum niobium and tungsten minerals. The commercial test obtains the tantalum concentrate assaying Ta2O5 31.98% with recovery 43.44% and tungsten product assaying WO3 89.40% with recovery 76.02%. The developed technique provides a reliable approach and an effective way for comprehensive utilization of lean fine complex refractory tantalum niobium tungsten ore resource.

The Thompson Nickel Belt, located in Northern Manitoba, Canada, contains more than 400 million tonnes of ultramafic low-grade nickel mineralization in 9 deposits. One of these, the Pipe deposit, was mined between 1971 and 1983 producing a Ni concentrate of 9% to 11% grade at 73% recovery. The operation was terminated because the poor recovery, low Ni grade and high MgO con-tent of the concentrate made processing this ore uneconomical at the metal prices prevailing at that time. Vale Inco is now re-evaluating these deposits with the intent of providing a new source of concentrate for its Thompson integrated processing facility. It is known that serpentine slimes coating on the sulphide surfaces are responsible for the poor metallurgy. Various desliming methods were tested including settling, elutriating, tabling and hydrocycloning. Hydrocycloning has proven to be the most effective means of desliming. With a feed assaying 0.70% Ni and 33% MgO, a rougher flotation concentrate assaying 22.7% Ni and 4.8% MgO was produced at a Ni recovery of 62.5% (relative to the feed to grinding), with no utilization of slimes dispersants. Another 16.6% Ni recovery was achieved in scavenger flotation resulting in a total Ni recovery of 79.1%. Batch flotation tests using various flowsheet configurations to optimize the grinding, desliming, reagentizing and flotation conditions are in progress.

Maturing populations create an increase in the demand for the type of non-ferrous metals, which are used in the manufacturing of electronic products. The depletion of existing high-grade deposits, make it necessary to boost the efficiency of beneficiation processes and most importantly the yield (recovery rate of the value commodities). Increasing demand now makes it worthwhile to tap into resources, which were previously considered waste, for example secondary deposits such as tailing ponds and electronic waste. In order to achieve increased yields, increasingly finer, or even ultra-fine fractions have to be treated. In most cases, mineral characteristics such as size and density call for non-mechanical, high-capacity technologies to be used. There are various technologies that allow for the separation of fines and ultra-fines. This paper outlines the dynamics and efficiency of pneumatic flotation with emphasis on its application to the recovery of non-ferrous metals, from electronic waste. The conventional agitator flotation technology of an electronic waste processing plant was not able to recover ultra-fine non-ferrous metals satisfactorily, due to losses within the tailings. Because of its adaptability and its inherent suitability for non-ferrous metals, pneumatic flotation has been incorporated to the existing process achieving excellent results. The merit of the process lies in the state of the art technology, which does not utilize compressed air and any rotating parts, which results in a reduction in wear and energy requirement, both features of this innovative technology. In addition, the use of pneumatic flotation resulted in a significant reduction in residence time, when compared to mechanical flotation. Pneumatic technology is able to influence air bubble size in a flotation cell, by changing the speed and pressure of the slurry stream. Higher slurry velocities lead to the formation of smaller air bubbles, which is required for the successful flotation of ultra-fine particles. Conversely, decreasing the slurry velocity leads to bigger air bubbles. The optimum bubble size can be created according to different feed characteristics. This is important in case of feed fluctuations.

The research is aimed at involving in the processing of poor platinummetal natural and technogenic raw materials. The purpose of the research is the creation of a multifactorial complex of innovations in the system of ore preparation and separation cycles, which ensure a high efficiency of flotation enrichment of hard-to-treat raw materials. In the usual practice of enrichment, minerals of the platinum group (PGM) of less than 10 microns in size are the source of inevitable process losses. For poor raw materials, it is precisely thin PGMs that are characteristic, their proportion sometimes being almost 100%, and their opening leads to the formation of a large amount of slime, which adversely affects the efficiency of flotation. To reduce the yield of slimes and increase the selectivity degree of the opening of the PGM in the ore preparation cycle, a dry grinding scheme and pneumoclassification of the milling material has been developed to obtain fractions of different fineness, density and morphology of the particles. From 2 to 5-fold reduction in the yield of slurries for various ores has been achieved. The separation cycle successfully tested are: flotation of fractions in separate cycles with a differentiated choice of the reagent regime; preliminary selective flocculation of slime fraction material; use of a new generation of bioreagents for flocculation and flotation. A new approach to subsoil research is protected by a patent. The dependence of the efficiency of biocollectors on the composition of biomineral extract from the processed raw materials, which forms the basis of new reagents, is established. The possibility of obtaining the degree of extraction of PGM, native gold and sulphides from finely ground pre-fractionated poor ores with the use of biocollectors of at least 85% is proved. With conventional reagents, the extraction of PGM is 12-23% lower, with the use of traditional ore-preparation apparatuses, the PGM recovery rate was halved. Methods for the long-term storage and preparation in industrial conditions of biocollector reagents that do not require the purification of waste waters from them have been developed. The developed multifactorial system of intensification of flotation enrichment can be introduced to recovery PGM from tailings of enrichment of titanomagnetite, chromite and copper-nickel ores.

"In Russia, 1.1 million tons of mercury-containing waste are stored. The amount of mercury in soils and heaps of industrial enterprises is estimated at 3000 tons; in dumps, concentration tailings, sludge dumps of the gold mining industry up to 6000 tons have been accumulated. Mining is one of the main sources of mercury emissions in the natural environment that poses a real threat to the natural environment. At present, the process of amalgamation is prohibited and not applied in gold extraction. The application of amalgam technology in gold mining led to the accumulation of highly toxic products in the form of gold-bearing amalgam and metallic mercury, with a mercury content of dozens and even hundreds of times greater than the maximum permissible concentration for soil (1). Therefore, mercury-containing tailings constitute an ecological hazard to the environment. According to published data, at waste storage sites of industrial enterprises, up to 50 tons of mercury enter soil annually, and up to 3.5 tons pollute the air. At the same time, mercury-containing waste due to the reduction of the country's mineral resources is an additional source of mercury. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle mercury-containing waste. INTRODUCTION Paperobjective: demercurization of technogenic raw materials (amalgamation tails, discharge outlets of tailing dumps) to be recycled. Under natural conditions, the mercury usually migrates in the form of three most common compounds: elementary mercury (Hg); mercuric mercury ion (Hg+2); methylmercuryion (Hg (CH3) +. Chemical compounds Hg (II) are found in natural conditions much more often than Hg (I).The authors propose to conduct demercurization of technogenic raw materials (mercurial tailings) in two stages. At the first stage, the mercury in the form of small balls, the finest particles (drip mercury) can be extracted by applying the gravitational method. We propose a method for centrifugal processing of crushed waste in the apparatus of Itomak company, Novosibirsk, as the basis of the technological process for mercury recycling. The extraction of metallic mercury out of mercury-containing waste into commercial products, according to the technological characteristics of the Itomak apparatus, reaches 86.0% (2, 3). At the second stage, the extraction of mercury out of technogenic raw materials is performed applying a sorption method and using carbon sorbents based on fossil coals. Hard coal of the Kuznetsk Basin has been already used for industrial production of active carbons (carbon sorbents) of the KAD-iodine type, which is one of the prerequisites that determine the choice to use it for the aims of this study."

Annually it is formed more than 95 Mt of clinkers in iron and steel industry of Russia, including 79 Mt of clinkers in blast-furnace, steelmaking, foundry and ferroalloy productions. Complex development of clinkers will provide not only extraction of valuable components, but also preservation of ecosystems. Processing of solid slags is realized, as a rule, in a cold condition by mechanical methods only including stage-by-stage crushing of slag on devices, working on principles of compression and shift (jaw and roll crushers). However it doesn?t provide the complete extraction of metals from clinkers. The intensification of decomposition, in our opinion, can be provided under the use of the devices working on a principle of free kick. At such influence on a material, its destruction occurs on micro cracks, sides of cohesion that is there is a selective destruction of the components possessing various resistances to impact. Decomposition of a piece on the basis of free kick about a material or metal is realized in centrifugal-shock crushers and mills of research-and-production association ?Ural Center?. The share of the joints sharply lowering the efficiency of enrichment thus is minimal. The efficiency of application is proved by morph-metrical measurements with the help of system of image analysis ?SIAMS-600? and physical-mechanical tests of clinkers and their components (impact strength, micro hardness). The experience of application the devices of centrifugal-shock crushing for processing clinkers in blast-furnace, martin and converter productions of Open Society MMC, clinkers of rough-edged copper melt of Joint-Stock Company "Karabashmed" and aluminium clinkers of Joint-Stock Company « Samara plant of aluminium alloys » has allowed to confirm the efficiency of application these devices for selective decomposition of metallurgical clinkers and the opportunity of using clinkers as resource of ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy.

"With the increasing depletion of high-grade ore deposits, smarter mineral processing solutions are required to achieve sustainable and economic methods for mining and processing low-grade deposits. In order to make the treatment of low-grade deposits economically viable, large quantities of rock need to be mined and processed. The associated infrastructure costs (power, water supply, accommodation and support services, waste storage) result in a substantial penalty on the project, from both capital and operating cost perspectives. As a consequence, the challenge for the mining industry is to overcome the associated rise in energy and water consumption as well as increased project complexity when processing large amounts of low grade ore. Ore sorting technologies have been used for many years, predominantly on small projects, enabling the upgrade of marginal ores. Several sorting methods based on characteristics including specific gravity, radiometry, colour, particle size, grade and other detectable physical characteristics have been employed. The challenge for large low-grade ore bodies is to crush and sort at coarser rock size in order to minimise specific energy consumption in comminution and to reduce waste disposal costs. For large projects, the understanding of the economic impact of ore sorting is limited. The economic drivers include plant head grade improvement; sorting infrastructure capital, operating and maintenance costs; waste material handling and other environmental costs related to waste disposal. This paper analyses the economic impact of ore sorting in a large mineral processing operation. The focus of the analysis is to compare NPVs for a circuit including screening and ore sorting stages. A project for processing an Australian copper sulphide ore is considered as an example for this study."

China is rich in iron ore resources, but most of these ores are low-grade, polymetallic and refrac-tory ones. Furthermore, with the rapid development of chinese iron & steel industry, the comprehen-sive recovery of these ores is becoming more and more important. The tin, zinc-containing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones, and great reserves of them are found in China. At present, they have not been efficiently utilized. In this paper, based on the investigation of basic physicochemical properties of the tin, zinc-bearing iron concentrates, taken from a mineral processing plant, the mineralogy reason that these concentrates are so intractable and refractory is found out, using advanced microscopic testing methods, such as optical microscope (OM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), X-ray diffrac-tion (XRD), etc. It is found that the symbiotic relationship of iron, tin and zinc metallic minerals are very complicated, and magnetite in the concentrate is closely symbiotic or enwrapped by fine cassi-terite and sphalerite. So it is difficult to separate tin and zinc completely from the iron concentrates by simple regrinding and physical separation method. This investigation provides theoretical guid-ance for developing new approaches for utilizing these concentrates.

"Oolitic hematite ore is one of the most refractory iron ores in the world. It is not feasible to separate iron minerals from raw ore by conventional mineral processing methods. In recent years, a new technology called coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation has been employed to produce metallic iron powder from oolitic hematite ore effectively. In order to find the nucleation mechanism, a thermodynamic analysis of the carbothermic reduction of oolitic hematite ore was conducted by the HSC 6.0 thermochemical software. The phase transition and microstructure changes during the coal-based reduction were also investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the iron oxides in the oolitic ore were reduced to metallic iron following the route of Fe2O3–Fe3O4–FeO–Fe in reduction process. The reduction reactions preferentially occur in the high activity regions to form a higher concentration of Fe elements, and then more supersaturated Fe separated out to form new phase nuclei. Under the action of homo-aggregation and principle of minimum free energy, the iron cores continuously absorbed migratory Fe around and grew into quasi-spherical iron particles embedded in slag phase. The large-scale vibrating screen has been applied widely in coal industry and other industrial areas as a kind of important device. As vibration mechanical device, it works very hardly and works in very bad environment so that the structure of screen is damaged easily. Therefore, it is very important that how to detect the fault of structure as early as possible to make the repair schedule reasonably and economically and to avoid the body hurt and device damage. As a kind of important structure of vibrating screen, the lower crossbeam is the main carrying structure and it is easily damaged, so it is regarded as a researched object in this thesis and it is tested under the load in the laboratory. Based on the test, acoustic emission wave signals can be got-ten by modern acoustic emission testing technique. Then, the ?wavelet packet - energy? from the characteristics of acquiring signals is used as neural network input vector. In the BP network structure design, the design of a hidden layer with variable number of BP network is established. Based on the error by contrast, the best nerve number can be identified in the hidden layer. Through integrated analysis, using Levenberg-Marquard BP study algorithm, network-training errors are relatively small, the acoustic emission signal is used in BP neural network as a pattern of recognition. In Matlab6.5, neural network model identification is created and taking advantage of nonlinearity and the ability of learning and memory of Neural Network, this model is fixed by training structure of network with training samples. The work presented shows that acoustical emission signal processing and research on early fatigue fault diagnosis based on the wavelet and the neural network is viable.

The paper is focused on the optimal selection of grinding medium for a drum mill. The decision-making is based on the fuzzy multiple attribute approach. One way to optimize the grinding process in a tumbling mill is associated with the development and testing a new shape of grinding body. Family of new grinding bodies ? spheroidal tetrahedrons (tetraballpebs) has been manufactured. Two types of spheroidal tetrahedrons and a classical ball (sphere) with one and the same weight are compared. A fuzzy entropy method to calculate the weight of the attributes is suggested. The application of High-Power Nanosecond Electromagnetic Pulses (HPEMP) irradiation in dressing of resistant gold- containing ores appears attractive as this technique provides for a significant increase in precious metal recovery (30-80% for gold and 20-50% for silver), therewith helping reduce both energy consumption and the cost of products. The prospects for applying pulsed power technologies in the mineral processing in order to increase the contrast between the flotation properties of raw minerals dictate the need to perform special studies of the effect of HPEMP on the structural state, phase composition, and physical and chemical properties of surfaces of sulfide minerals as the main carriers of precious metals. This study deals with plausible mechanisms of the micro- and nanophases formation on the surfaces of sulfide minerals under the effect of high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) with high electric field strength ~107 V/m. This paper discusses reasons for the changing of flotation behavior of natural pyrite and arsenopyrite during the pulsed-power treatment. It was concluded that HPEMP treatment may be regarded as a tool to change the surface composition and sorption ability of collector (xanthate) onto mineral surface, and, therefore, it allows to control the hydrophobic-hydrophilic surface balance. Single mineral flotation tests have been shown the significant increasing of the pyrite recovery while the arsenopyrite was depressed. The results of gold containing pyrite (pyrrhotite)-arsenopyrite ore flotation in batch approve the decreasing of arsenic recovery in sulfide concentrate. This paper describes the recent developments, arising from research at Leeds, in the computer modelling of packing of complex shaped particles and prediction of physical properties of the structures represented by the packing. The computer model DigiPac, is capable of packing particles of any shapes and sizes in a container of arbitrary geometry. The ability to predict packing structure of real particle shapes and to compute directly some structure-dependent physical properties (such as liquid permeability, mechanical strength/ stability, compaction and sintering, dissolution and leaching, etc.) is obviously highly desirable and has significant potential in industrial applications. Examples are presented relating to the packing of granular materials.

The aim of the research is to increase the recoverable value of poor, difficult-to-digest complex mineral raw materials. In the Republic Belarus, universal centrifugal-shock devices have been created for crushing, grinding and classification of ore and non-metallic mineral raw materials in dry mode, which differ from foreign analogues by a higher level of resource saving (including electricity and materials). Dry-ore preparation technologies have been tested on a pilot scale: fine crushing (replacing grinding in rod mills), grinding (replacing wet grinding in ball mills) and pneumoclassification on different types of ores, - which made it possible to identify the criteria for the suitability and unsuitability of mineral raw materials for their use. The possibility of regulating the upper and lower limit of the size of the finished material is established, the possibility of reducing the yield of slimes (-0,020 mm) to 5 times is determined. A comparative analysis of the contrast degree of separation characteristics of ore a similar granulometric composition, crushed in wet and dry conditions, is performed. The achieved contrast degree of gravity properties after dry grinding - 104,3; after the wet - 60.2. When enriching on a centrifugal concentrator, gold recovery to the concentrate after dry grinding increased by 13.12% while improving the quality of the concentrate from 78.3 g/t gold to 90.75 g/t. When testing the gravity-flotation scheme for the enrichment of poor gold-quartz ore, the increment of gold extraction after dry grinding was 7.6% for gravity and 9.5% for flotation; the total increase in extraction is 17.1%. The possibility of flotation of a larger material after dry grinding has been proved, with an extraction gain of 1.5% compared to the flotation of thinner material after ball milling. The influence of dry technology on the efficiency of the leaching of gold and silver (an extraction gain of 5.5 to 10%) and heap leaching (extraction gain - up to 18.3%) was studied. The positive influence of dry ore preparation technologies on the efficiency of gold and silver heap leaching and heap leaching, thickening and filtration is proved. Lines of dry ore preparation technologies can be used in modular complexes for processing technogenic raw materials.

Kelsey Centrifugal Jig was found to be promising for the beneficiation of fine coal particles. The present study was aimed at in-depth understanding of the separation features of Kelsey Jig through detailed experimentation. Beneficiation of fine coal of size 150 x 300 µm was studied in a laboratory Kelsey Jig. The thickness of the ragging bed is found to be an extremely crucial parameter apart from the other process parameters such as rotational speed and pulsation frequency. A constant pulp density (25% solids) of the feed slurry was maintained in the study. The feed rate was also kept constant at 50 kg/hr dry solids. Silica sand of size -1.68+0.85 mm was used as ragging material to avoid the pegging of internal screen having an opening of 425 µm. The rotational speed was found to have significant effect on the depth of the ragging bed and its porosity, which influenced the separation performance considerably. Pulsation was identified as the key factor in stratifying the coal bed and defining the misplacement as well as ragging bed porosity, which influenced the mass yield and quality of the products. Beneficiation studies were carried out with rotational speed varying between 900-1000 rpm while pulsation frequency was kept within 850-925 rpm. In a single pass through the Kelsey Jig 7-8% (absolute) reduction in the ash content of the feed material was observed at more than 55% mass yield. High rotational speed, moderate pulsation, and low ragging bed depth favored good cleaning. A high bed depth was found to facilitate rejection of high ash materials. It was established that Kelsey Jig is effective in fine coal cleaning though a controlled operation is required in order to achieve superior performance.
