Pilot plant tests of underground gold leaching from Maminskoye deposit oxide ores at a grade of 0,7 g/t Au were carried out. The underground leaching flow sheet includes Au dissolution by chlorine-containing solutions, Au adsorption from solution on active carbon, carbon concentrate ashing and calcine melting to produce high grade gold concentrate. The underground leaching system throughput was 15 m3 of solution per hour. Gold concentration in pregnant solutions was 0.12-0.13 mg/l. Gold recovery from solutions into carbon was in the range of 63-84%. It was demonstrated that the low Au recovery in the adsorption cycle was due to the presence in pregnant solutions of "active" chlorine, which destroys active carbon and causes a sharp decrease of the carbon loading capacity for gold. To improve the adsorption indices, previously dechlorinated pregnant solutions using bituminous coal or Na2S2O3, is recommended. Ion exchange process was tested as an alternative for gold extraction from dechlorinated solutions. In the testwork period, 4.4 kg of gold were produced with a chlorine consumption of 3.5 kg per 1 g of gold. During the tests a program of environmental protection measures was completed to provide the necessary safety precautions of the underground leaching works.

"At the regrind or secondary grinding stages of metal ores, usually the concern about the energy efficiency is extremely important. In general, the specific energy consumption at this stage is higher than in the primary stages of grinding. In addition, it has been observed a tendency of finer grinding in the new projects of metallic ores, due to the finer mineral liberation, which leads to an increasing capital and operational costs. In Brazil, during the last 10 years, regrind P80 sizes of approximately 40 to 20 ?m have been necessary in all new iron and copper plants. The use of conventional ball mills, adequate for primary grinding, can result in low energy efficiency with products below a P80 of 50 ?m. This paper presents an overview of the regrind circuits in Brazil that operate with vertical mills and the results of industrial surveys at selected vertical mill circuits. Where possible, comparison is made between the plant results and the design criteria and laboratory regrind tests used for the mill sizing."

"In recent years, DEM (discrete element method) softwares, along with 3D laser measuring equipment, have become powerful tools to describe mill charge behavior, as well as forces acting on the liners of SAG mills. With the aim of contributing to streamline this application of the advanced technologies ME Elecmetal and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ, proposed a new approach to improve the design of mill liners using elements from mechanistic modeling of grinding. The paper presents a methodology for continuous improvement of liner design, which uses information from the DEM collision energy spectra in the mill discriminated for the different components (ore and steel balls), as well as information on the breakage properties of the ore being ground. From these it proposes the concept of "effective collisions", which corresponds to the collisions that are of sufficient magnitude to cause breakage, thus allowing to discriminate from impacts that do not cause breakage either in a first impact or after repeated loading. It also tracks the collision of steel balls against the shell in order to assess their potential damage to the liners. An industrial case study is presented of a 38’ diameter SAG mill, which was experiencing challenges associated to liner breakage and low efficiency with the old liner design. Through a modification of the liner design, simulations demonstrated the potential benefit associated to reduction in ultraprojection and improvement in mill capacity. Implementation of the new design in the SAG mill was carried out, resulting in increase in daily throughput from 6 to 12%. Further, the time spent in liner change was reduced by 47% given the reduction in the numbers of parts. This operation also benefited from having no stops due to unplanned shutdowns to replace broken tiles. These demonstrate the benefit of coupling advanced computational tools to sound engineering principles in continuous improvement of liners."

"As part of an extensive research and development project, the technical and technological implementation of the patents DE 10 358 245 B4 and WO/2006/056172 was developed with the goal to present a system for the innovative roll- agglomeration method exhibiting a) a modular setup, b) high productivity and c) suitability for the use of fibres of different applications and product qualities (high technical availability). The processability of the rarely adapted raw fibre materials into high-value intermediates brings forward their application in various processing industries dealing with the production of fibre reinforced plastic composites, heat and sound insulation materials as well as with the gas and liquid cleaning systems. The innovative fibre agglomeration presented in this work is performed by a combination of rolling and pressing the fibres inside a geometrically pre-defined roller table, in which the fibres are forced to bound through entanglement / interlocking and develop into agglomerate. The agglomeration process is carried out in a circular roller path with a rectangular cross-section. For improving the adhesive properties, and thus the quality of the agglomerates, the boundary surfaces can be covered / patterned / lined / coated with various materials. The resulting roll-agglomerates are characterized by different quality parameters such as mass, shape, porosity and stability. The properties of the agglomerates can be modified based on the end-product requirements by slightly modifying the process parameters such as filling ratio, residence time, roll-geometry, procurement of the boundary surfaces, etc. as well as the input material properties such as fibre type, fibre fineness, fibre length, etc. This work carries extensive work on the roll-agglomeration system to assess the effectiveness and the variability based on the product specifications. Agglomerates were produced with wide variations of system parameters with varying roller table liners and based on evaluation of the produced agglomerates with respect to their mass, the geometrical dimensions, their porosity and stability."

"The aim of the research was to increase technological parameters of the flotation of finely disseminated scheelitecarbonate ore using selective reagent regime.In the studies the monomineral fractions of scheelite and calcite; samples of the scheelite-carbonate ore of the Primorsky deposit with the range of the carbonate module 3-65 were used. A carbonate module of ore is the ratio an initial assay of calcite to an initial assay of scheelite. Sodium oleate, iso-decyl alcohol, water glass, calcium chloride, soda or sodium hydroxide as flotation reagents were used. The flotation method in the Hallimond tube and in a mechanical cell, an adsorption method for study the kinetics of adsorption of oleate and isodecyl alcohol and its combinations on scheelite and calcite, IR spectroscopy including ATR to study the composition of surfacecompounds were applied. Selective reagent regime may include two ways - a combination of collectors or a modification of depressants of calcite and other gangue minerals. On one hand the combination of sodium oleate and higher fatty iso-alcohols of fractions C12-C16 in the rough scheelite flotation to reduce the flotation activity of calcite has been studied. On the other hand depression of calcite flotation by calcium chloride with water glass into rough flotation was used; modified the steaming cycle by Petrov's method applying change the concentration of water glass and other. Fatty iso-alcohols can adsorb on the surface of the calcite that reducing the adsorption of sodium oleate and floatability of calcite has been fallen. Their co-adsorbing with oleat on the scheelite surface were support the hydrophobization and flocculation of slime particles of scheelite. Flocculation of the particles of scheelite leads to increased up 3 times of the recovery of scheelite from the slime class, and calcite change up only 1.4-1.1 times it’s recovery.The growth of the carbonate module more than 11 is decreased the assay of WO3 in the scheelite concentrate of selection cycle."

Pyrite cinders is a complex raw material, in which the valuable metals are: Au(2.04 g/t), Ag(35.0 g/t), Cu(0.38%), Zn(1.1%) and Fe(56.0%). In this case high costs for mining and ore processing are not required. The hydrometallurgical treatment of pyrite cinders using thiourea, sulfite and cyanide solutions are examined in this paper. It was found that thiourea leaching is ineffective due to high consumption of thiourea and sulfuric acid. The cyanidation on pyrite cinders was conducted. Various options of the preparation of the products for the subsequent cyanidation have been examined. The tests on cyanidation process optimization were conducted. The effectiveness of these cementation methods by metallic iron or extraction for copper recovery from water phase has been shown. Zinc precipitation can be found in the form of carbonate. In order to recover noble metals from cyanide solutions, the cementation onto zinc dust was tested. The developed technology provides for recovery at 49-56%Au, 20-25%Ag, 22.5%Cu and 50%Zn during NaCN (1.4 kg/t) and CaO (6 kg/t) consumption. The results of pilot plant testing are the basis for technical regulations in order to design a pyrite cinders treatment plant. The technology has been examined in pilot-plant conditions. In this case the recovery of 54.5%Au, 45.3%Ag, 30%Cu and 49.9%Zn was achieved to provide saleable products. Keywords: pyrite cinders, thiourea leaching

Material handling is an essential part of the aggregate and mining industries. Mixing and blending of granular material can affect the grading and particle size distribution of the material leaving the system. Segregation and variability can cause problems in the downstream process while insufficient capacity will disturb upstream processes. Process plants utilize surge bins for handling recycle streams of material and act as a buffer for the process. The flow through the surge bin is usually controlled by a simple PID controller or PID controller in combinations with a plant-wide controller. Even though the surge bins play an important role of smoothening out the plant and creating a steady operating condition they are seldom included in plant simulations. This can lead to a number of problems in the form of decreased plant capacity, plant lockdown, and even operation units malfunctioning. The main objective of this study is to investigate the dynamic behavior in surge bins and develop a model more suitable for representing this behavior, which can occur during operation, for dynamic simulations. The proposed model adopts vertical layers which allow for flows between segments depending on the level of neighboring segments. This enables both the representing of segregation within the system and gives an indication on the effects from different inlet- and outlet placements. The proposed model was developed in MATLAB/Simulink and validated against an actual bin with the total capacity of 660 m3 in platinum ore application. With the new bin model significantly higher fidelity and more accurate dynamic, simulation results were achieved. Within stamp-charged coke making a large volume of coal is compacted to one single coal cake before entering the coke oven chamber. This is done by means of several falling stampers in a stamping machine having a mold nearly of the oven?s dimensions. Producing a high quality coke also from inferior coals requires a cake density of approximately 80% of the coal density. Besides that the industrial stamp-charging process demands a minimum mechanical strength of the coal cake to move it from the stamping mold into the oven chamber without failure. Densification and the build-up of cake strength were investigated earlier in stamping tests using a micro-stamping device. The quantities derived from these tests (as e.g. cake density or porosity) represent average values for the entire cake. Statements describing the local compaction state at different heights are difficult to achieve without destructing the cake. In order to gain better insight into the densification process and the inner structure of the coal cake a computational model based on the discrete element method (DEM) has been set up using 2 and also 3-dimensional simulation software. The stamper?s position and velocity as well as the force acting on the stamper were monitored and the model?s response was compared against measurement data from laboratory stamping tests. It was possible to reproduce the force and displacement pattern of the stamper in response to the viscoelastic properties of the cake using standard DEM bonding and contact models. Furthermore, the rearrangement of particles in response to the compaction by the stamper was tracked by calculating their displacement at the point the stamper hit the coal surface. The latter can also be used as indicators of particle deformation or breakage. By defining control points at different heights the particle displacement, stress and strain rates, porosity could be studied at different heights. Flotation process is based on the formation of primary collector-based supramolecular associates at the mineral surface and within the pulp. Supra molecular chemistry allows studying within a common framework, all kinds of molecular associates, from dimers to large assemblies, resulting from spontaneous association of a large number of interacting components of the flotation system, where the collective action of non covalent bonds can have an important role. Self-organization of supra molecular assemblies in the flotation process can be controlled by modifying the chemical structure of the collector, the nature and arrangement of functional group in it, by introducing secondary agents (SA) into the process, to adjust the interaction between the collector and the surface and to control the hydrophobicity of the adsorption bed. This offers broad opportunities to build supramolecular assemblies to improve the efficiency of flotation. Besides, the more complex is the system, the weaker are the interactions, that determine its behavior. This powerful factor still is not employed deliberately to control the flotation process. Organophosphorus compounds (OPC) - dialkyl phosphoric acids whose radicals contain ethoxylated groups ? are considered as nanocompounds, that can be used in building supramolecular assemblies. The presence in an OPC molecule of functional groups (P=O, P (O) O-, P (O) OH), ethoxylated groups, and aromatic rings is the basis for the formation of stable supramolecular associates. Gross formula: C54H94KO16P. Molecular weight is 1069.39. Phosphoryl anion has a regular tetrahedral structure with the angle of 109.5°. Lengths of -P-O- bonds in a PN molecule are 1.7345Å; length of the hydrocarbonic radical C42-C72 = 33.942Å. In an alkaline environment, PN is in the form of the anion, in an acidic environment ? in the form of the polycation due to protonation of the oxygen in the EO group. Chem Office software suite was used to generate three-dimensional images of an OPC molecule in acidic and alkaline environments, to reveal the OPC geometry (bond lengths, valence angles, aliphatic radical length), to identify the collector's binding sites with the mineral surface, to find the most stable and energy-efficient molecular conformations of an OPC molecule and its complexes with minerals under various conditions. Mechanisms of interaction between OPCs and the mineral surfaces are different. In ores whose minerals are dominated by ionic bonds (fluorite), the interaction mainly involves the anionic form of the collector; in ores, whose minerals are dominated by covalent bonds - the oxygen of the phosphoryl group (donor-acceptor interaction) and the oxygen of the ethoxylated groups. This difference is responsible for the formation of spatial associates with different surface layer structures. Introduction of supramolecular chemistry concepts into the analysis of flotation phenomena and mechanisms can become an effective tool for better understanding the flotation process and offers new means of consistently improving its effectiveness.

"Interaction with microorganisms results in significant surface chemical changes on minerals. For example, chemolithotrophs such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans significantly alter the surface chemistry of several sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Heterotrophic bacteria such as Bacillus sp. could alter the electrokinetic properties of oxide minerals such as hematite, alumina, silica, kaolinite and calcite. Microbe-mineral interactions could thus be beneficially utilised in mineral beneficiation as different from bioleaching. Microbially induced mineral beneficiation unlike bioleaching deals with interfacial phenomena at mineral-solution-bacteria interfaces and surface chemical changes are brought about at very rapid rates amounting to a few minutes resulting in mineral separations in an aqueous medium.In this paper, the role of acidophilic chemolithotrophs such as Thiobacillus thiooxidans and neutrophilic heterotrophs such as Bacillus polymyxa in the beneficiation of sulfide and oxide minerals is illustrated. Mechanisms of bacterial attachment on various sulfide and oxide minerals are outlined with respect to the influence of bacterial interaction in bringing about mineral surface hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity. The role of bacterial cells as well as metabolic products such as bioproteins and exopolysaccharides in significantly altering the surface chemistry of sulfide minerals such as sphalerite and galena and oxides such as hematite, alumina, silica and calcite is discussed with probable mechanisms. Possibilities of generating mineralspecific bioreagents are outlined with respect to bacterial adaptation to mineral substrates."

In this study, effect of thiosulphate and oxidation using oxygen were studied in arseno copper ore flotation. Single mineral study of chalcopyrite and tennantite in regard to the aforementioned techniques was also studied. Zeta potential, XPS, contact angle and floatability of single minerals were conducted for each treatment to understand the mechanism. It was revealed that the separation is best conducted in alkaline condition at where there will be interaction between thiosulphate and the mineral surface as well as the formation of hydroxide species in the oxidation using oxygen. From zeta potential of both thiosulphate and oxidation conditioning, it can be found that the reactivity of tennantite is much higher rather than chalcopyrite resulting higher rate of depression on both techniques as shown from contact angle and floatability of each mineral after treatment. XPS spectra confirmed qualitatively and quantitatively the existence of species responsible for the depression of each conditioning techniques. As for the copper ore flotation test, it is the oxidation using oxygen provides best performance after 60 minutes of oxidation.
