Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

A numerical approach is presented for predicting the liberation of phases during comminution, with direct calculation of a liberation spectrum giving the fraction of the particulate system in each narrow size-composition class. The numerical model uses a Poisson flat process for stochastic generation of the non-convex three-dimensional Poisson polyhedral textures and the system of fractures that give rise to convex fragments. With this numerical approach, there is no need to assume random uniform isotopic fracture (lack of selective liberation); only computational geometry primitives are exploited for the derivation. The agreement with relationships obtained previously under the random uniform isotopic fracture hypothesis demonstrates that the approach is capable of deriving full liberation spectra directly. Spessartine-quartz rocks are manganiferous sedimentary rocks rich in spessartine and quartz which occur in north-central New Brunswick. They represent a recrystallised manganiferous siltstone/chert that is contained in or associated with red manganiferous siltstone (RMS) units. The spessartine-quartz rocks and RMS form part of an Ordovician volcanic and sedimentary succession within the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen which hosts numerous massive sulphides and polymetallic vein deposits. The New Brunswick spessartine-quartz rocks are spatially and temporally associated with stratiform base-metal, precious metal and hydrothermal tin-tungsten deposits. This suggests that spessartine-bearing lithologies and zones can be useful in predictive metallogeny and for the understanding of the stratigraphy and palaeographic setting of the early Palaeozoic rocks of the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen.

A method is proposed for the continuous calulation of a rock mass in real time while tunnelling with a TBM. Rock properties are investigated through models of the fracture stress under the disc cutters, the quasi-shear stress between the disc cutters and the specific energy of cutting under the disc cutters. Comparison of theoretical and monitored data of cutting specific energy can be used to determine theoretically the prevailing shape and size of the bulk debris. The shape and size of the chips from a given rock vary with the boring parameters. Introducing shape and volume corrections into the models of the evaluated stresses suppresses the influence of the boring regime and allows the rock properties to become dominant

During the construction of storage caverns, and during their lifetime if the use to which they are put so requires, it is necessary to provide adequate ventilation to ensure the safety and comfort of the underground workforce. An analysis of likely contaminants during construction has indicated that where a large facility is situated in a rock mass of even moderate temperature climatic conditions are likely to be the limiting factor during most of the mining operation and atmospheric pollution when blasting is undertaken. Possible options for improvement are increased air flow, cooling of intake air and reduction of the heat source by altering the number and type of haulage units employed in the cavern. Local solutions are an alternative approach where heat problems are confined to a few specific locations

Paper presented at the conference on Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for <mineral deposits> in sedimentary <basins>, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The Hg and Sb deposits of the Mediterranean and Circum-Pacific Belts are often found at elevated structural levels, suggesting that their preferential occurrence in young orogenic belts is not a fundamental metallogenic feature but merely reflects their chances of surviving post-orogenic peneplanation. In western Europe their emplacement appears often to be related to late orogenic extensional events accompanied by a notable increase in heat flow. Although Nikitovka and Almaden have quite different settings, both appear to be related to deep-reaching shears. Together with brittle fault zones at higher levels, these provided pathways for fluid phases that originated at least partially within the mantle. The Nikitovka deposits are located in the Donets segment of the 2 000 km Pripyat-Dniepr-Donets palaeorift in the East European Platform. Initiated in the mid-Devonian with a possible Precambrian precursor, its listric boundary faults displace the Moho from a depth of about 50 km north and south of the rift to 35 km along the axes of the Pripyat and Dniepr segments. The steep central anticline of the Donets segment, within which the main Hg-Sb district is located, is interpreted to be associated with a reactivated fault reaching into the upper mantle. The Almaden syncline, formed during the Variscan Orogeny, may be an older pull-apart basin or half-graben associated with the collapse of the Cadomian Orogenic Belt. It is situated on a major ENE-WSW-striking shear zone which may represent a Late Cadomian transfer zone reaching into the mantle

In the largely preserved laterite profiles at Syama mine, in the savanna region of southern Mali, element geochemistry in the mottled-clay horizon and below can be related directly back to the protolith, but above this, in the ferricrete and cuirasse horizons, the hypogene signature is much modified by pedogenic processes. In tropical rainforest terrains extensive remobilisation can result in wide but weak geochemical targets for gold and pathfinder elements. At the Hire concession in central Ivory Coast, intense recent alteration of the largely intact laterite sequences has modified soil-geochemical dispersion patterns extensively, producing Fe-rich nodular stone lines and obliterating previous patterns and features. Where the upper horizons of the laterite profile have been removed or reworked, as at the Senoufo concession in northern Ivory Coast (savanna) or the Kubi prospect in Ghana (rainforest), all soil horizons can be related directly to hypogene geochemistry. In these truncated profiles, gold and base metal anomalies are essentially those of the lower weathering profile and form narrow but strong dispersion haloes. A good understanding of the geochemical processes active in deeply weathered profiles is required if targets are to be recognised effectively

The compilation of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation aerial gamma-ray data to produce maps of the apparent surface concentrations of potassium, uranium and thorium for the conterminous USA has resulted in a reasonably accurate representation of the distribution of these elements in the surface rocks and soils. The Birimian rocks of the region are gold-bearing and show many similarities to those of Burkina Faso. All three greenstone belts (Goroual, Tera and Sirba) host gold-bearing quartz veins. It appears that, contrary to previous misconceptions, lateritic terrain is not an unfavourable environment for exploration geochemistry. This is demonstrated by the results for the Koma Bangou area, where soil and termite-mound geochemistry have been successfully used in the search for gold. Soil provides an effective sampling medium where it is shallower than about 2 m; there is evidence that some soil anomalies are enhanced by the presence of secondary (botryoidal) gold. In areas of thicker, allochthonous soil cover, termite-mound sampling is more effective. At Koma Bangou an identified resource of some 11 100 000 tonnes with an average gold grade of 2.44 g/t has been reported. The gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins and stockworks aand in the wallrocks of shear and fault zones that trend N, NW and NE. The host rocks are a granodiorite-syenite porphyry and intermediate metavolcanic rocks and tuffs

TOF-SIMS was used to detect, identify from parent molecular ions and determine the relative concentrations of collectors sorbed on the surface of mineral particles in concentrate and tailings samples from three Canadian concentrators. In the Kidd Creek Zn circuit, sphalerite lost to tailings carried on average a quarter of the amount of isobutyl xanthate present on that recovered to Zn concentrate; amyl xanthate, which is not reported as added to the circuit, was also detected on floated sphalerite and pyrite. At Brunswick, sphalerite particles lost to the scavenger tailings had ten times less amyl xanthate and isobutyl xanthate than those recovered to the Zn final concentrate, while both xanthates were detected on sphalerite floated to the Cu-Pb cleaner circuit. At Matagami, significantly more isopropyl xanthate and isopropyl dithiophosphate were detected on sphalerite recovered to the final Zn concentrate than on that lost to the Zn rougher tailings

The illustrated device uses the principle that the lamp can burn with a smaller inlet passage if the air is rich in O2 and that the size of the inlet can be made a measure of O2 percentage. The appliance consists of an adjustable cut-off applied to the inlet of a safety lamp of the improved Gray pattern. Precision is assessed from tables of calibration tests in air contaminated with blackdamp of CO2:N2 composiiton 1:5.67 at temperatures of 40-70 degrees F. Results are presented of tests at St. Germain's colliery, of tests in air contaminated with pure CO2 and of air contaminated with both blackdamp and inflammable gas; published ranges in mine-air blackdamp compositions are tabulated as ranging from 90.06% N2 to 43.90% CO2. When firedamp is present at 1.25-2.5%, its content must first be estimated by means of the cap and a fifth of its value then deducted from the lamp reading for O2

Data obtained from a copper mine were used in a comparative study of the reserve estimates generated by applying geostatistical methods to surface borehole data, underground core drilling results and assay values from chip sampling. Global estimation of the deposit performed by kriging of the low-density sampling data from the surface boreholes did not provide reliable results, but could identify the potentially mineralised zones. The reserve generated from core drilling results correlated well with that estimated from chip sample data and with that estimated by the conventional methods used at the mine. A satisfactory reserve evaluation could, therefore, be obtained by kriging of the data from the underground core drilling alone, provided that a systematic sampling procedure was adopted. Estimates based on chip sampling information could be used as a check, which could avoid the current practice of chip sampling of most of the mine workings. The aim should be to develop a semi-variogram for the deposit, which could be used to estimate the reserves by kriging

Mineral production in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the last ten years has been confined to the sporadic production of industrial minerals—for example marble, anorthosite, limestone, talc and silica. From 1962 onwards there has been an upsurge in mineral exploration in the Highlands, increasing in tempo from 1966 onwards due to the efforts of the Institute of Geological Sciences, the Highlands and Islands Development Board, and private and public companies. Geological, chemical and economic aspects of some of the more interesting mineral prospects are discussed: these include anorthosite, feldspar, magnetite, quartzite and brucite marble. Reference is made to a geochemical survey undertaken in the Rosehall district of Sutherland, the results obtained being summarised. Problems that affect the future of mineral exploration in the Highlands are stated.

The paper notes that the extraction of 22% of the remaining workable reserves in the north western area involves a risk of spontaneous combustion higher than is normal in Britain. Mining systems have been tailor made in order to minimize the risk of spontaneous heatings, and these systems are described. Well-proved methods of combating spontaneous combustion are referred to, as well as the limitations which now apply to them as the result of the introduction of modern mining techniques. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the circumstances in which spontaneous combustion occurs underground in the north western area. Several actual incidents which have occurred in the last few years, along with the practical application of the lessons learned, are described. Of particular note are: a) the procedure adopted in the north western area to equalize pressure differences across stoppings using pressure chambers, and b) a retreat mining system, primarily designed to deal with high methane emission and steep gradients, which also affords some protection against spontaneous combustion.

An artificial standard material has been developed and used to examine the robustness of some of the procedures for correcting stereological bias. Different mineral liberation distributions were constructed from the standard material. The particles were mounted, sectioned and the sectioning data measured with an electron microscope interfaced to an image analyser. Four correction procedures were used and the corrected and true liberation distributions compared. It was found that the large-sections correction provided a simple, uncorrupted correction. Hill's fast approximation performed well except in cases of narrow liberation distributions; the sectioning data appeared to support the assumption that the locked section and locked particle distributions are identical. Barbery's correction performed well in most cases, having difficulty only with the very irregular liberation distribution. The PARGEN correction was able to provide a good estimate of the true amount of free material, but had difficulty in predicting the locked particle distribution

Modern advances have led to sweep and multibeam bathymetric surveying techniques that yield three-dimensional images of the sea floor and have also produced high-powered personal computers with which to control the data and analyse the results. At Sydney, in Nova Scotia, the topography of the sea floor over the longwall workings was observed before and after mining with a precision echo-sounder in 1987-89, with sweep bathymetry in 1993 and with multibeam bathymetry in 1994-95. The results of the latter programme produced what was probably the first observation of a complete three-dimensional subsidence trough over a longwall panel 2 500 m x 168 m. The subsidence has been quantified to a sufficient degree of accuracy to allow simple trend analysis, which has shown that the pattern and shape of movements are similar to those found elsewhere but with significantly smaller maximum subsidence. Chalcopyrite concentrate was flash-oxidised in a laminar-flow furnace in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres that ranged in composition from N2 to N2 + 50 vol% O2. Gas pre-heating temperatures were 500-1100 degrees C and four particle-size fractions were studied: 28-38, 38-44, 44-62 and 62-74 micrometres. The effect of the residence time of the particles on sulphur removal was studied in the range 0.1-0.35 s. Scanning-electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive analysis and back-scattered electron analysis was used to determine the morphology and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Total desulphurisation was achieved under the most oxidising conditions. Particles were observed to undergo fragmentation during oxidation, the violence of this depending on the iron and sulphur contents and the original particle-size fraction. The melting and/or reaction stages of the particles under different conditions were studied in powder samples. Polished sections were examined to follow the development of porosity and the mineralogy of the particles. A model for the fragmentation process is described

Standardised stream-sediment sampling procedures have been used in mountainous and hilly terrains. Special sampling procedures were developed for application in remote environments, such as high mountains, desert, semi-desert, karst and loess-covered regions. The diversified analytical methods used in more than 20 analytical laboratories participating in the project have been unified into two multi-element, multi-method analytical systems. A unified data monitoring procedure was developed based on primary and secondary standard samples. To date the project has covered about 4 000 000 km2 and the aim is to complete the coverage within the present decade
