The mining industry of Cameroon continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. Crude petroleum production has become the most important facet of Cameroon's economic development. Oil production was estimated to be 6.3 million tons in 1983 compared with 5.2 million tons in 1982 and 4.3 million tons in 1981. Over two-thirds of its export income was attributed to crude oil. The country's only refinery, dedicated in 1981, has a production capacity of 2 million tons. Cameroon has become self- sufficient in petroleum products since commissioning the refinery. The oil sector contributed approximately 13.5% to Cameroon's gross domestic product in 1982-83. Oil production was expected to rise from 125,000 barrels per day in 1983 to 156,000 barrels per day in 1985 when output peaks. Cameroon's ultimate recoverable reserves have been calculated at 100 million tons, or 750 million barrels of oil.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). Two previous physical-property reports 2-3 / (hereinafter referred to as parts I and II) presented data on 160 rock types from 36 different projects (part I, sections 1-25 and part II, sections 26-36).The physical-property data were originally obtained to supplement structural mining problems, seismic studies, or related investigations; however, they should be equally applicable in all fields of studies where the strength, hardness, or other properties of rock are important factors. The fatigue-failure characteristics under high-frequency (10 KHz) cyclic loading were determined for a marble, granite, and quartzite. The rock speci-mens were cyclicly loaded (using a high-power piezoelectric sonic transducer) at a constant strain amplitude generated by forming a longitudinal standing stress (strain) wave in the cylindrical test specimen. The number of load cycles required to fail each rock type at a given strain amplitude was deter-mined. The fatigue fractures were tensile in nature and the fracture load amplitudes were as low as 30 pct of the static tensile strength. Also the internal heating of the rock caused by the material damping (internal friction) was measured. The damping and internal heat generation in the specimens was analyzed to show that nearly all of the power input can be accounted for as a change in enthalpy in the specimen. Using these results the thermal strain in the rock was calculated to evaluate its contribution to fatigue failure. The thermal strain was found to range up to 30 pct of the dynamic strain amplitude depending on the load amplitude and the number of load cycles. The specific energy required for failure was determined and possible applications of the high-frequency fatigue fragmentation process are discussed.

The stripping of iron-laden solvent with hydrochloric acid in the iron-removal step of the clay-hydrochloric acid process for the extraction of alumina from calcined kaolinitic clay results in a loaded ferric chloride stripping liquor. Treatment of this stripping liquor at boiling with calcined kaolin to form insoluble Fe203(s) and a dilute A1C13 solution was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to characterize process problems and to aid in sizing of solids-liquid separation equipment. Variables identified as important in the chemical reaction were calcined kaolin particle size, ratio of calcined kaolin to FeC13, and reaction time. These parameters were tested for significance and their interactions investigated. Fine calcined kaolin (-65 mesh) at a greater than 1:1 mole ratio of contained acid-soluble A1203 to Fe203 equivalent of the FeC13 in the stripping liquor required less reaction time than coarser (-16 mesh) material. Solids-liquid separation of the reacted slurries by both settling and filtration requires flocculation.

Combined preservative/fire retardant systems were pressure impregnated into Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine samples and evaluated for decay, flammability, and mechanical properties. The objective of the evaluation was to identify cost-effective systems for use with mine timber, and to provide an information and data base from which Federal code regulations could be established. Thirty systems, based on combinations of commercially available preservatives and fire retardant impregnants and coatings, were applied to Douglas fir samples and evaluated for decay and flammability. The ten most promising systems were ap¬plied to both fir and pine and reevaluated for decay and flammability before and after water leaching. The five best systems were given a thorough laboratory evaluation using both pine and fir. Evaluations included flame spread, smoke density, toxic gases, decay, compressive strength, flammability after artificial weathering, and cost. All systems had acceptable toxic gas levels and smoke densities, but flame spread was only borderline acceptable for most of the samples tested. A trade-off analysis showed Acid Copper Chromate/Fyrprufe with Albi-107A/144 intumescent paint and Koppers NCX to be the-best systems. Recommendations are made for further large-scale testing using the two best Systems.

This report analyzes electrical accident data in the metal/non-metal mining industry. Accidents are categorized to determine their root causes. Special attention is given to accidents associated with inadequate or defective grounding of mine power systems. Recommendations are made concerning proper grounding practice, especially for dredges and for quarries in hard rock or sand. The costs of instituting the recommended practices are estimated for model mine power systems which are based on field data obtained from 37 mines and several electrical contractors. The expected benefits of various suggested safety practices are also estimated.

References to many articles have been omitted purposely , because the material covered by them is duplicated in publications included in the bibliography . It is manifestly impossible for the Bureau of Mines either to recommend or adversely criticize the statements of the various writers , particularly as to cost and profit estimates in articles referring to American shales , but it is hoped that the investigator will use caution in considering such statements , as it is well known that much of the literature on this subject has been published for promotion purposes and is therefore over- enthusiastic . Bearing this fact in mind , the reader should be able to judge for himself the reliability or usefulness of these articles .

"INTRODUCTION The Lookout Mountain coal deposits were examined by J.L. Stratton, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in April and May 1943. The area investigated includes that part of southern Lookout Mountain in townships 4 to 8, south, ranges-9 to 11 east, and contains approximately 140 square miles in DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in northeastern Alabama (fig. 1.)Six coal seams having a minable thickness of 18 or more inches are represented in the area. The third seam, known locally as the Hill seam, has been correlated with the Upper Cliff No.1 seam and is referred to as such throughout this report. The preliminary investigation indicated that the Upper Cliff No. 1 seam is a low-volatile, high-grade coking coal. The work done on this project was confined principally to determining the amount and grade of coal in this seam.The only existing maps of mines in the area were one of the Lookout Fuel Co. at Lahusage, Ala. (fig. 2), and one of the Lookout Mountain Iron Co. at Battelle, Ala. (fig. 3), Consequently, to gain some knowledge of the grade and tonnage mined, surveys of the other mines were necessary. Many of them were caved, and many were filled with water, necessitating considerable preliminary work."

The formation of nitrogen oxides, the decay of carbon monoxide, and the concentrations of residual hydrocarbons in the secondary combustion zones of propane-air and methane-air flames were studied in three enclosed burners designed to simulate gas appliances such as space and water heaters. The effect of thermally or chemically perturbing the combustion gases above these flames was determined theoretically and by means of factorial experiments. The concentrations of air pollutants and the flame temperatures were measured, and the effects of ingress of secondary air into the primary and secondary combustion zones, flame stability, burner port surface, and simulated recycling of combustion gases were noted. Based on this study, four principles were derived that, applied to gas appliance design, will insure minimal emissions of these air pollutants: 1. Oxides of nitrogen can best be kept low by depressing peak temperatures to about 3,050° F. 2. If this is not possible, then the secondary combustion zone should be cooled rapidly to this temperature. 3. Carbon monoxide concentrations can be limited by rapid induction of secondary air. 4. Hydrocarbon concentrations can be controlled by designing for well-seated, stable flames. In addition, empirical reaction rates were derived that predict the concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the primary and secondary combustion zones.

The previous 17 reports have covered fiscal years, but this report covers not only the fiscal year from July 1, 1952, to June 30, 1953, but also July through December 1953, to bring the report to a calendar-year basis. Most of the material in this report relates to publications issued during the reporting period, Some work is mentioned briefly on which publications have not yet been issued or on which data are riot expected to be published, for security or other reasons, and in a few instances publications issues before the reporting period but not included in the previous report are mentioned.3/ Further details on the published work described herein may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. During the reporting period, the Bureau directed its research and technologic work on coal toward developing end encouraging increased conservation and more efficient use of our mineral fuel resources through more efficient and safer mining methods and improved methods of preparing and utilizing these fuels. Some significant advances, particularly in coal-mine safety, mining methods, and development and utilization of low-rank coma have been made.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two 2 in-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine. These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope Lo determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

The purpose of this research was to develop a computer simulator fur predicting the air quality in existing coal mines as well as a design aid for developing new mines. In addition to the air quantity flow, the other variables of tempera Lure, moisture, methane and respirable dust are necessary to determine the air quality. An additional feature of this simulator is that it allows parametric studies of these variables to explore the effect that these variables have on the air quality of an operating mine system. The research has also pointed out arias where more research is needed, and promote better and more systematic data taking techniques. Wang and Hartman (see Reference 9, on page 1-98 of Section 1) had already published a computer program to determine the ventilation of large mines, and Wang and Saperstein (see Reference 10 on page 1-98 of Section 1) later published a refinement of the work in the previous reference. These references were the starting point of the simulator developed by this present research effort, and Section 1 of this report is a slightly modified version of the original vent elation program. This publication describes a thermal-recovery project and two waterflood projects in Carter, Garvin, and Stephens Counties, Okla., that will be visited during the 1966 annual tour by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects arc (1) the movement of heavy (15° to 28° API gravity) crude oil through the reservoir and into the well bore with energy furnished by burning a portion of the crude oil therein; (2) the use of an inverted nine-spot pattern with dually completed injection wells, to produce oil from deep (8,200 to 10,200 feet) reservoirs; and (3) the flooding of five sand lenses separately by using controlled water injections through multizone completed injection wells. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, method of completing and operating wells, source and treatment of injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results obtained from the development.

The heavy liquid separation (HLS) process was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to develop a means of concentrating minerals from natural ores, Various spodumene ores were tested in a 0.4-inch diameter cyclone using pure tetrabromoethane (TBE) as the heavy liquid. Studies were initiated to examine the influence of (1) pulp density (2) feed grade, (3) cyclone pressure, (4) cyclone apex opening size) (5) cyclone vortex finder opening sand (6) mineral particle size on the separation efficiency. Each of these factors was found to affect the heavy liquid separation in some degree; the mineral particle size exhibited the greatest effect and the ore feed grade the least. Conditions necessary to yield an 85 percent spodumene concentrate with an 85 percent recovery were determined to be: 70 psig pressure, 10 percent solids, 0.08-inch apex opening, 0.11-inch vortex finder opening and a minimum amount of minus 200-mesh fines in the feed. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying over 90 percent and indicated mineral recoveries exceed-in 90 percent.

The Bureau of Mines has completed 4 yr of deep-bed filtration research comparing the efficiencies of granular magnesium oxide (MgO) and conventional filter sand in single- and dual-medium filters when filtering mineral-processing and mine waters. Bench and field evaluation tests were conducted using water types ranging from synthetic suspensions of asbestos, kaolin, metal hydroxides, and milled sand to process waters from magnetite beneficiation, iron ore flotation, granite cutting, and a steel mill. Even though the turbidity reductions were similiar, MgO filters were found to be advantageous when filtering water pretreated with alum because the volume throughput before breakthrough (turbidity > 1 NTU unit) was much more for the MgO filter than for the sand filter. Reduced head loss owing to the greater porosity of the MgO filter beds is potentially the most beneficial advantage in employing MgO as the filter medium, especially when filtering water pretreated with polymer flocculants. Granular MgO (periclase) is durable and can be backwashed Like sand. It is compatible with anthracite in a dual-medium filter and apparently is not poisoned by dissolved metals in the process water. No single solid-removal mechanism could be identified for the improved filtration observed with granular MgO.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. (a) The system design of hydrostatic drives for mine hoists, usually of special nature, is considered along with oil hydraulic component selection suitable for the application; (b) The criteria for head frames of steel and/or concrete are developed with full consideration of all operating and environmental conditions.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged in usage because of tensile strain or crushing effect of mining machines running over the cable. One of the repair problems is finding the exact location of a short or open in this cable so it may be spliced or otherwise repaired. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and FMC corporation signed Contract No. H0 122011 in August, 1971, to develop instrumentation for finding faults in coal mine trailing cable. This report describes performance of several existing instruments as trailing cable fault locators and also construction details and performance records of several cable fault location instruments that FMC designed, built and tested as part of this project.

This is the final report of work accomplished during 1973-75 under U. S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0242015, "System for Handling Underground Mine Supplies and Materials." The purpose of the contract was to develop a mechanical device which could safely perform handling tasks that are normally done manually in underground bituminous coal mines. The report discusses studies leading to construct-ion of a battery-operated, three-wheel vehicle with a six-degree-of-freedom manipulator. Supportive design studies included collection and analysis of production, manual functions, and injury data on the underground bituminous coal mining industry. Transfer tasks in section storage and working places were the prime candidates for mechanical handling. Functional specifications were developed for two handling devices (one to handle existing unit loads and one to handle repackaged unit loads) and for a vehicle to mount the handling device. Design concepts for nine different handling devices were developed and a cost/benefit evaluation made for each. Detail design, capital and operating costs, and method improvement savings data were developed for two battery-operated vehicles and for two different manipulators. The three-wheel vehicle with anthropomorphic manipulator was chosen for development.

Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine ventilation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, including coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.
