The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied mineral resources of the Dragoon Mountains Unit, Coronado National Forest (54,264 ac), Cochise County, AZ. This study involves literature and field investigations with a focus on mine and prospect sites, which were inventoried and mapped; maps are contained in this report. Rock-chip samples were taken from mineralized zones and from some mine dumps; assays of the 477 samples are in appendixes. Mineral deposits are genetically and spatially related to Tertiary-age granitic intrusive activity. Most metallic mineral deposits are also strongly fault-controlled. Colored marble resources (270,000 st) are valued at approximately $6.5 million, if all were to be developed and sold as landscaping material in the form of-marble chips. However, with current demand, it is unlikely that regional markets could absorb all this material. Economic modeling of copper-zinc-silver skarns suggests none would be profitable to mine and capitalize at early 1993 commodity prices, mainly due to the small estimated size of the deposits (30,000 st to 40,000 st maximum). In the entire Unit, 140,000 st of inferred subeconomic skarn resources were estimated by USBM on five different skarn trends; measured subeconomic resources are negligible. An inventory was made by the Bureau of Mines of wastes of mineral origin, water requirements, treatment of wastes, and water treatment practice of 163 industrial installations in the Lower Missouri River Basin. This is the second and concluding report on the survey, conducted in cooperation with the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior as part of the Missouri Basin project. Principal industries covered by this second report are: Sand and gravel, coal, meat, ice, brewing, paint, petroleum, chemical, fabricated metals, and a number of industries having either no waterborne wastes, or none of mineral origin. Gravel, sand, and silt from 47 producers are the major wastes, totaling 6 million tons annually, Coal mine wastes in the form of slurried solids from washing crude coal are second in volume, totaling 100,000 tons per year. They contain an average of about 40 percent coal. Salt is the third largest waste, amounting to 28,000 tons per year, Next is calcium carbonate, most of which is formed in water treatments, Because of its high unit value, chromic acid is important, although the waste quantity is much smaller; cyanide wastes are also significant because large quantities of sodium hydroxide and chlorine are consumed in their treatments prior to disposal. The various industries discharging wastes use 38 billion gallons of water annually; the recirculation rate is 109 billion gallons per year. The plants discharging no waterborne mineral wastes use 2 billion gallons of water per year and recirculate more than 1 billion gallons. Sand and gravel plants use 13.5 billion gallons; petroleum refineries use 10 billion gallons in direct use and recirculate 82 billion gallons per year.

Thirteen additional preservative/fire retardant systems were applied to Ponderosa pine and evaluated for flammability both before and after water leaching. The more promising four systems were given a thorough evaluation for flame spread, toxic gas and smoke density levels, resistance to decay, and compressive strength. The most promising system on the basis of history of usage in the mine, ease of application and low cost as well as overall performance is the Fyreprufe/ACC Albi 107A/ 144 combination. A survey of inspection tools and instruments, identified equipment which could be assembled into an inspection kit for use in determining the extent of decay and/ or impregnant retention levels in mine timber. A literature search identified those high fire hazard areas found in a typical mine. Timber and other wooden structures used in such areas should be treated with an acceptable fire retardant system. A survey of insurance companies revealed that the use of such treated timber in the mines would probably have little or no impact on the rate structure.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0395041. The primary objective of this work was to extend the noise control technology developed under earlier USBM projects to a wider range of load-haul-dump models to evaluate the general applicability of these techniques. Noise control treatments were designed, fabricated, and installed on three Wagner LHDs (an 5T-2B, ST-2D, and an 5T-8A) selected as demonstration machines for this project. The machines were evaluated either in production mines or at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Mine. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve overall noise reductions of between 4 and 8 dB using these techniques. Engine cooling and seal design were determined to be important design issues in such treatments.

During and immediately following World War II, the heavy demands for steel required the mining of unusually large quantities of coal for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The largest demand for metallurgical coke is in the Appalachian region, which comprises central and western Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. This demand is satisfied by coke made from coals within the region; consequently, the reserves of coking coal in this region are being depleted more rapidly than reserves in other coal-producing regions. The supply A' high-quality coking coal during the war was inadequate, and some coke were forced to use inferior coals. The coke produced from these inferior coals adversely affected the rate of production. Another national emergency probably would produce a similar condition, and in the interest of -national security, the Munitions Board of the National Military Establishment requested the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the reserves of coals suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. All bituminous coals in the Appalachian region are coking, and as the coal that produces the better metallurgical coke become depleted, other coal previously considered inferior will be used. The general trend is toward the use of lower-quality coals for metallurgical purposes.

This report documents-the process of literature review, site selection, instrument installation, data acquisition, and preliminary data reduction performed to evaluate the influence of rock mass discontinuities on coal mine subsidence. A system of surface, subsurface and mine level instrumentation was installed at the Armco No. 7 Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia where the overburden varied in thickness from 630 to 1040 feet. Survey monuments, borehole pressure cells, full profile borehole inclinometer-extensometers, mine level extensometers, stressmeters and tape extensometer convergence stations were installed to monitor displacements and stress changes. Final design of the instrumentation system was based on: a) review of available information, b) field mapping and analysis of areal photography, c) drilling, and d) borehole geophysics. The report contains the complete graphed data of stress and displacements accompanying the longwall mining of a 4800 ft long by 480 ft wide coal panel.

Six explosives were compared by measuring their strain- producing abilities in limestone . Peak strain , e , varied with scaled distance , R/Ro , according to the following equation : € = Kc (R /R 。)- ". The distance exponent , n , was a constant of the rock and did not depend upon explosive . The strain intercept , Ke , increased with increasing detonation pressure of the explosive . The strain intercept also depended upon the explosive- to - rock impedance ratio . For impedance ratios from 0.53 to 1.38 , the strain intercept was approximately proportional to the medium stress , Pn , as calculated from the explosive detonation pressure , P , and the explosive - torock impedence ratio , Z , by the simple elastic theory relation : P = 2P / ( 1 + Z ) . PD However , the data indicated that , at lower values of impedance ratio , the strain intercept is relatively larger than would be expected from the simple elastic theory . The results presented provide a simple method for predicting the relative effectiveness of different explosives in breaking limestone from the detonation pressures and characteristic impedances of the explosives .

This Bureau of Mines publication ill scribes present practices of making injection wells for in situ uranium leaching. Casings, screens, drilling fluids, coring, logging, cementing, and developing are discussed with the objective of aiding those who are starting an in situ leaching operation. Improper choices of materials or techniques can result in wells that are either useless or wells that have an undesirably high resistance to injection. Important factors include careful selection of screen slot size, use of logs for choosing the cementing basket depth, proper cementing techniques, and careful choice, use, and flushing of drilling fluids. The information was obtained through observation of well construction and through discussion with in situ leaching companies, drillers, and suppliers.

This report, rather than attempting to replace previous annual reports, supplements, and more importantly, coordinates and summarizes the entire effort. Even with such restrictions, the report is voluminous and, therefore, a decision has been made to divide it into two parts. The first volume is basically narrative and includes tabular results and analyses. The second volume is in appendix form giving detailed information. Together, they permit a logical discussion of all aspects of the project (Volume I) without cumbersome distractions but, at the same time, provide all the details to permit others to evaluate and explain the results or develop similar research programs (Volume II). The aim of the original proposal was basically to develop instruments and techniques and then make measurements of suitable power parameters, ground fault currents and ground resistance beds. With such information available, it was possible to develop a meaningful simulator which would permit investigating electrical systems and components on paper without costly trial and error procedures in the third year, a cable splice testing program was added to the project. While there were the usual delays attendant in such original research, these objectives were achieved.

In the first Report of Investigations of the present series?(No. 4562) the usual course of progress ill reducing the minerals of low-grade ores to their valuable metallic components had been noted as advancing along two lines to concentrate a usually diminishing percentage of these minerals to a smaller bulk of richer product, and then to smelt the smaller bulk more cheaply per pound of metal produced. Fundamental properties of lead compounds made it difficult to treat much richer lead products than are treated at present in several steps of conventional lead smelting, unless ?marked modifications were made. No limits to the richness of the feed itself' were set by the ore (Scotch) hearth; on the contrary, the richer the feed, the better the results given by the hearth. The natural field of operation of the hearth, as determined by the ores available, was seen to lie in the Central United States, with their lead concentrates containing negligible quantities of precious metals and. with few ores of such metals available for use as fluxes. It was noted) however, that even in its chosen field, the Scotch hearth, or "ore" hearths developed from them, was not always used; the usual smelting practice was followed, at times, of sintering followed by blast-furnace smelting for even rich ores.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investigation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples tom some oil fields of Louisiana are given in Bulletin 291.4/ Analyses of 26 representative crude oils from various producing formations of southern Louisiana are given in is report. These.samples are from 14 field's in 10 parishes in the southern part of the State, usually designated as the "Louisiana Gulf Coast area." ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Thanks are due the representatives of the various companies from whom samples were obtained for their cooperation and assistance in helping to secure representative samples. The present trend of chemicometallurgical research toward widespread and inclusive use of thermodynamic methods requires the inclusion of available data of this sort in any comprehensive metallurgical report . Such data for manganese are far from adequate for the full utilization of these methods . Even if our knowledge of these properties is weak , the collection of available figures is nevertheless well worth while , especially if their utilization in an approximate way may show inherent possibilities of application . No less important is the necessity for discovering the vital gaps in the existing information , to serve as a basis for further pertinent study . The utility of the thermodynamic methods of Lewis and Randall ( 234 ) 3 has become increasingly evident to metallurgists . It is true that at present no better approach to the general , fundamental problems of chemical metallurgy is available than close adherence to these methods . The effort is here made to collect and correlate , as far as possible , significant quantitative thermodynamic data on manganese and its metallurgically important compounds . There are considered here only the intrinsic properties of pure materials . The order maintained as far as possible will be as follows :

To improve mine safety, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a search for better materials and systems to anchor roof bolts. This report describes a study on the ability of a gypsum-based anchoring medium to withstand short- and long-term loads. Results showed that 2-ft-long bolts anchored with gypsum that was injected as plaster slurry at a 0.370 water-cement ratio and cured for 10 min sustained pull test loads equal to the ultimate strength of the bolt steel (about 37,000 lb). For comparison, the minimum required capacity is 17,600 lb. Long-term loads of 15,500 lb were sustained with estimated 10-yr movement of less than 1/2 in. Two-foot-long bolts anchored with gypsum installed in a cartridge in which the water was contained in tiny capsules sustained a pull test load of about 30,300 lb at a 0.319 water-cement ratio and 10-min cure time. At a 0.288 water-cement ratio, load capacity was about 37,000 lb. The lower load capacities of cartridge-installed bolts resulted primarily from the remnants of the water-wax capsules. Above 10,000 lb, creep movement of cartridge-grouted bolts appears excessive, but longer bolts may be capable of resisting creep better.

Bureau of Mines investigated the progressive impact that petroleum (crude oil and condensate) operations in the Gulf of Mexico have had on onshore operations and the expected effect of increasing activities in this area on future petroleum supplies from domestic sources. The data analyzed include capital expenditures, number of wells drilled, success ratio for exploratory wells, daily production per completion, annual producing rates, and oil reserves. The report compares offshore and onshore data and ascertains trends in petroleum industry operations. Observed data and trends indicate that in the near future Gulf of Mexico development and production will continue to increase relative to total U.S. petroleum activity. By 1975 annual oil and condensate production from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to be in the range of 750 million bbl to 1,150 million bbl, and account for approximately 20 to 30 pct of the estimated total domestic production.

The time-cost-risk analysis described herein was performed as part of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the feasibility of the program relative' to time and cost constraints, and to determine the probabilities of achieving various technological goals. A combination of standard program planning and analysis techniques were used to achieve these objectives. These included a critical path analysis, a resource allocation analysis, and a risk analysis.

The automation of coal mining must occur in a manner that is economically beneficial to the industry and that enhances the safety of the underground and surface workplaces. The work at WVU over the last five years in applying expert systems and neural network controlled autonomous robotics provides the mining industry with tools that when properly applied should clearly lead to mine-wide management and operational improvements and should also contribute to a higher awareness of safety issues by all work crews. This work includes the development of MMSS (Mine Management Support System) and the detailed development of autonomous robotics utilizing neural networks for mining systems.

The environmental compliance process affects all aspects of hardrock-mining operations, from exploration through post-closure. The primary components of the environmental compliance process are requirements under the National Environmental Protection Act of 1969 (NEPA) and the permitting requirements associated with various other federal, state and local laws. This study considers the Greens Creek Mine and the development of two other projects (Alaska-Juneau & Kensington). These mines were used as the foundation for a case study of the impacts of the environmental compliance process on hardrock-mining activity in Southeast Alaska. The case study presents the institutional and legal requirements, followed by a discussion of the impact of this process on the production and timing of the three mines. The results of this preliminary study reveal some interesting findings, some expected and others unexpected, regarding the impact of the permitting process on the exploration, development and (proposed) operation of the three mining projects in the Juneau area. Determining the cost of compliance with these requirements is an important step in evaluating the appropriate course of action to protecting the environment while providing the necessary raw materials needed for society. This preliminary study highlights the initial starting point for such an analysis.

Several deposits in the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (WSA) have small identified or potential for undiscovered gold and silver resources. One prospect area is a potential target for molybdenum. Most base and precious metals and one uranium deposit in the study area are of the fissure-filling, contact metamorphic type associated with late stage fluids of the Cretaceous Cadiz Valley batholith. Some evidence suggests limited Tertiary and Quaternary mineralization. Mineral deposits are controlled by faults, shear zones, and joints which strike northwest and dip northeast or southwest. Although undefined, calcium, sodium, lithium, and strontium brines are inferred within the study area. Some potential for oil and gas and geothermal resources is indicated by the interest private industry has shown in the eastern part of the study area. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of lines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (p1. 1) which encompasses approximately 205,000 acres (83,000 ha) in south-central San Bernardino County, California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of mines, prospects and mineralized areas; geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey.
