When acoustical materials are used in a mining environment for noise control purposes, they are subject to environmental deterioration from hydraulic fluid, moisture, and dust. These and other factors can cause physical degradation of the material, which can lessen its ability to absorb sound. In this study, the Bureau of Mines measured the sound absorption properties of 16 different acoustical materials after 4 sample treatments: (1) being kept clean and dry (as received from the supplier), as a control or reference standard, (2) immersion in water and draining, (3) immersion in lOO-pct-petroleum-type hydraulic fluid and draining, and (4) exposure in a coal mine. The last three treatments were used to approximate the type of physical degradation that can be experienced in actual use. The impedance tube or standing wave method was used to measure the normal absorption coefficient. It was found that the absorption coefficient of most materials was adversely affected by the retention of either oil or water, with oil having the greater effect. The only class of materials that was affected by neither oil nor water was neoprene foam.

This presentation covers the results of laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines Mineral Dressing Section, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., on alluvial sands from Dismal Swamp, Bear Valley, and Cascade, Idaho. The search for radioactive minerals has led to the reexamination of alluvial deposits; in the process of this reappraisal the frequent presence of minerals bearing columbium and/or tantalum was toted. Because of increased demand for these metals by the defense industries and because these industries depend upon foreign sources for their supply the domestic alluvial black sands are being considered, as a possible domestic source. However, utilization of these alluvial deposits depends upon development of methods of concentrating these valuable minerals. The primary objective of the test work was the study of the effect of attrition scrubbing, sizing, magnetic, electrostatic, and gravity separa¬tion as methods for concentrating and recovering the columbium and tantalum-bearing minerals, samarskite, euxenite, ilmenorutile, and columbite.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 276 natural gas samples from 23 States. All samples except four were collected during calendar year 1984. Those four samples were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1984. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and chromatograph. The results of these investigations are published annually to make the information available to the petroleum industry and the general public. Twenty-eight publications have presented the results of 13,957 gas analyses made prior to 1984. The first three bulletins (1-3)2 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24, 26-28) containing 8,453 analyses of samples collected since 1960.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the cost of mine permitting and compliance with environmental regulations in Alaska. It discusses permitting requirements and procedures for placer and lode mines. Placer miners must comply with recently established (1988) water quality regulations and effluent treatment requirements. To estimate the impact differing treatment options (no recycle, 100% recycling, and flocculation) have on a placer mine's rate of return, three models (1,500, 1,000, and 500 yd3/d) were simulated. Rates of return for these models show a marked decrease as effluent treatment is increased. The incremental increase in operating cost from one treatment option to the next is relatively small; however the opportunity cost of lost production if' significant and accounts for the decreasing rate of return with increased effluent treatment. Lode mines face greater costs for permitting and compliance than similarly sized placer mines as a result of the impact of the operation. Direct permitting costs for lode mines range from 2 to 6% of total project cost, with 4% the most common figure cited by industry. Total costs for permitting and compliance are approximately double those for permitting. Indirect costs associated with compliance include mitigation, monitoring, and reclamation.

Water pollution problems associated with surface metal/nonmetal mines throughout the United States were assessed. Three major problems were identified: acid mine drainage (AMD), toxic concentrations of heavy metals and excessive sedimentation. Several factors affect the type and amount of pollutants generated at a mine site. Among these are hydrologic regime, geology, mineralogy, topography, climate, size of the mineralized area and mining method. Nine surface mines situated in distinctly different settings were visited and their pollution problems studied. These mines were located in Morenci, Arizona; Hayden, Arizona; Sauharita, Arizona; Cobalt, Idaho; Spruce Pine, North Carolina; Iron Mountain, California; Butte, Montana; Fernwood, Idaho; and DeLamar, Idaho-Oregon. A detailed evaluation of the pollution problems at the Morenci mine indicated that a diversion system and treatment pint would be the most effective means of abatement for the existing water quality problems. Based on the study of the Morenci mine and three other porphyry copper mines with differing problems a water management plan was conceived for a new source copper mine. A companion Appendix Volume containing detailed reports on the mine site visits is on file at the US Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center.

The heat capacities of four crystalline silicates of barium ( BaSiO3 , BaSiO4 , Ba Si¸0 , and BaSi₂0 ) and two crystalline silicates of strontium (SrSio and Sr₂Sio ) were measured over the temperature range from 51 ° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the entropies at 298.15 ° K. The entropy values were joined with known heats of formation to obtain the free energies of formation of the silicates with respect to their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K.

The value of non fuel mineral production in Alabama in 1991 was $539.9 million, a decrease of $20.7 million, a result of the nationwide recession that was felt throughout the State's economy. The 3.7% decline in mineral sales was due primarily to a slowdown in construction, which had a major impact in the construction minerals mined instate. Production and sales of crushed stone and sand and gravel fell significantly below the value reported in 1990. Despite the recession, Alabama moved from 21st to 20th place nationally in mineral value. Mineral industry developments in 1991 were primarily in the metals manufacturing sector. Reynolds Metals Co., Sheffield, celebrated 50 years of operation in Alabama. During the November celebration, the company dedicated a $121 million expansion that included a new casting facility and sheet rolling operation. Gulf States Steel Corp., Gadsden, completed the first full year of operation of its new multimillion-dollar continuous caster.3 The Foundry of the Shoals Inc., Florence, replaced two coke-fired furnaces with electric furnaces.

This publication presents a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of 494 accidents in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops of the Lake Superior district from March 1949 to June 1956. These accidents caused 499 lost-time injuries, including 12 fatalities. A similar Bureau publication, Information Circular 7744, Analysis of 346 Accidents, Underground Iron-Ore Mines, Lake Superior District, was published in April 1956. Accident reports were analyzed by the Bureau to show the causes of in-juries and the unsafe practices or conditions that caused the accidents. Also shown are the time charges, times of occurrence, ages of the injured by job classification, and experience of the injured in mines and on the job being performed when hurt. Detailed information is presented on approximately 27 percent of the total number of disabling accidents that occurred in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops in the district during the period covered. The text also contains tabulations of the accident experience and graphs with straight-line injury-frequency, injury-severity, and fatality trends for the period 1946-57.

"Preliminary examination of tungsten deposits on the Mountain View property near Hyder, Alaska, was made by Neal M. Muir, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines daring the summer of 1942. Fifteen samples were cut, rough esti¬mates of ore reserves were made, and it was proposed to extend the drift on scheelite-bearing vein 300 feet in a northwesterly direction.From May 22 to October 24, 1944, an exploratory project was conducted on the property by the Bureau. In the course of this work, the camp buildings were rehabilitated; the dam, hydraulic line, and machinery were repaired; 226 feet of drift was driven; 80 groove samples aggregating 3.9 tons in weight were cut; a 6,000-foot surface and underground traverse was run; and the area was mapped in detail.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is doe Neal W. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Division, Mining Branch, for their supervision of the field work and revision of the report.Acknowledgment is also made to Silbak Premier, Ltd., for rendering valuable assistance in the repair of equipment and for extending various courtesies to Bureau of Mines personnel during the conduct of this project.The Mountain View property is located at latitude 55° 59' north, and longitude 130° 03' west in the Salmon River mining district of southeastern Alaska, about 5 miles in a northwesterly direction from the town of Hyder, which lies at the head of Portland Canal, as shown in figures 1 and 2. Vein outcrops and surface workings are at an elevation of 950 feet and occupy the west flank of a low ridge between Skookum and Fish Creeks, as shown in figure 3. The portal of the long adit exposing the vein at depth is on Skookum Creek about 550 feet north of the confluence of Skookum and Fish Creeks.Access to the property is over a 4-foot wide trail built and maintained by the United States Forest Service. This trail is suitable for pack animals and is adequate for transportation of supplies and material for exploratory work. During the periods of camp construction and past exploratory operations a 4,000-foot, single-cable, aerial tramway, now in disrepair, served for transportation of materials and all machinery from the Salmon River Highway to the property. The cost of such hauling was high, amounting to $12 a ton. Topography is suitable for construction of a ""cat road"" 2 miles in length, connecting the property with the Salmon River Highway. It is estimated that such a road could be built for $5,000 a mile, and supplies, machinery, and concentrates could be haled over it at a cost of less than $2.50 a ton."

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. The effect of various zinc electrowinning solution impurities on the surface morphology of deposited zinc was investigated. Impurities studied included Al, Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ge, Mn, Ni, Sb, Sn, Ti, Pb02, PbSO4, and HC1. Also, the effect of animal glue, gum arabic, and Na2SiO3 additives on the deposited zinc surface structure was studied. Results were compared with deposits from a pure electrolyte consisting of H2SO4 and Zn+2, 200 and 65 gpl, respectively. Zinc was deposited on a Al cathode, 99.9 pct pure, using Pt anodes. Time, temperature, current density, and impurity concentrations were con¬troller The bulk of the tests were conducted at 40° C and 75 A/ft2 (82 mA/cm2). A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the surface morphology. X ray diffraction techniques were used to determine crystal orientation and nondispersive X-ray spectrometer analyses were employed in an attempt to locate impurity concentrations on the zinc deposit when pitting or re-solution occurred. The impurities were categorized by their effect on current efficiency, morphology, and apparent mechanism of H2 evolution from the cathode.

Tracor MBA under a contract to U.S. DOI Bureau of Mines designed, developed, fabricated and demonstrated a conveyor belt service machine. It is self-contained, battery powered, rubber tired and capable of handling, storing and transporting conveyor belting, wire rope and associated structures for sectional conveyor belts. While moving the tail section to its next position the machine discharges the belting, wire rope and belt structures. The belting is elevated and separated to provide for the insertion of the structures with minimum expended effort. A hydraulic system provides the power for steering, braking, winding or unwinding under controlled tension the belting and wire rope, operating a load-bed slat conveyor, raising, lowering and locking connection hitches and powering external hydraulic tools. Also, a pneumatic system is available to operate air impact tools. The service machine, with its present components can function in coal seams as thin as 48 inches, double wind conveyor belting 42 inches wide, 400 feet long, load or unload 3/4" wire rope on two separate reels and is controlled by two operators. A complete belt move using this machine requires only four workers. Successful underground demonstrations were conducted in coal mines located in West Virginia and Kentucky.

Variations in specific gravity of oil retorted from oil shales of the Eocene Green River Formation in northwestern Colorado were evaluated statistically, demonstrating that these variations are very strongly associated with stratigraphic position and less strongly but still significantly associated with geographic location. Specific gravity of oil retorted from these oil shales apparently varies with the carboxyl group content of the oil shale's organic matter. Higher temperatures accompanying increasing depth of burial probably progressively decarboxylated oil shale's organic matter producing the decrease of oil specific gravity associated with deeper stratigraphic position. The geographically associated oil-gravity variations were probably produced by regional variation in the original thickness of late Cenozoic extrusive rocks once overlying the Green River Formation.

Safety first is no longer merely a motto ; in some industries and in some parts of the mining industry it is an accomplished fact . In connection with the National Safety Competition of 1928 in which 284 mines and quarries participated , 42 plants were operated without a single lost - time accident . The winning company in the bituminous group had an accident severity rate of 0.053 per thousand man hours of exposure . Excellent safety records of various kinds are becoming more and more frequent , and the indication is that in reality safety is first in many mines and qquuaarrrriieess .. The safety achievements in the Stewart mine of W. J. Rainey , Inc. , are unusual even among mines winning awards in the competition .

Although coal is found in several locations in Virginia, almost all recent mining has occurred in the southwestern part of the state. Potentially minable reserves are estimated at 2.6 billion tons, slightly less than one percent of the national total. Coal ranges from high- to low-volatile bituminous, and seams average three to four feet in thickness. Virginia produces coal with higher BTUs (British Thermal Units) and a lower sulfur content than the national average. Historically its high quality has made Virginia coal attractive for metallurgical coke production and for the export market. Coal production and related industries have a significant economic impact in southwestern Virginia. In the seven coal- producing counties, coal mining is the major industry. In the two largest coal-producing counties (Buchanan and Wise), over 40 percent of total earning is derived from the coal industry. Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,198 1, and received final approval May 8, 1984. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved with the regulatory program December 15, 1981, with emergency program authority approved November 13,1987.

Oxygen breathing apparatus for use in mines was introduced to the United States in 1907. Despite their intended purpose of safeguarding lives, the apparatus led to the deaths of many men because of inherent or developed defects in the equipment, lack of training,, physical shortcomings of wearers, and improper procedures. The Bureau of Mines pioneered in research and training to curb logs of life among users of such apparatus and promoted development of safer equipment and procedures. As a consequence, deaths have been far less frequent. In 1944 the Bureau issued Information Circular 7279, Loss of Life Among Wearers of Oxygen Breathing Apparatus. That publication listed the case histories of 26 deaths that had occurred since the introduction of such equipment to American mining. The author, the late G. W. Grove,3/ asserted that further loss of life could be avoided if good equipment were used, teams were properly trained, and the basic principles of safe procedure were followed. This publication is a sequel to I.C. 7279 and contains information on eight deaths among wearers of oxygen breathing apparatus that were overlooked in the original compilation. It also describes the single death that occurred since I.C. 7279 was published.

A series of 15, stations beginning with Potsdam and Budapest and ending with Budapest and Potsdam were occupied inn the period August, 1908, to January, 1909. The intermediate stations were all at points which had been connected by Baron Eötvös with torsion-balance traverses. The observations were made with an invariable pendulum of the standard four-pendulum type of instrument of the Geodetic Institute, made by Stückrath at Berlin-Friedenau. The observations at each of the field stations lasted-one to three days with one exception; two or three time determinations were made; four to eight series of pendulum observations were made; the error of determination of the elevation of the instrument above mean sea level ranged from 0.30 meter to 1.10 meters, with the exception of the Arad and Baja stations, where the elevation was known more accurately and averaged about ± 0.8 m, which would cause an error of ± 0.25 x 10-3 dynes. No topographic correction was applied. The values for ?g were taken from Eötvös: Report on Geodetic Observations in Hungary, especially Observations with the Torsion Balance, Budapest, 1910. The differences in ?g as determined, by the torsion balance and by the unvariable pendulum were: Kuvin-Hidegkut 1.2 km. 0.001, Livada-Kuvin 9 km. 0.001, Pankota-Livada 13 km. 0.004, Kuvin-Arad 20 km. 0.000, Pankota-Arad via Kuvin 42 42 km.0.005, Pankota- Arad via Kurtics 50 km.0.000 dynes. Oltay concludes that if the stations are close enough together and if the terrane is rather flat, the measurement of ?g with the Eötvös torsion balance is as accurate as with the invariable pendulum. -- Donald C. The work described in this report was undertaken to evaluate and develop techniques for determining the oxygen content of titanium and titanium alloys. Early investigations of volatilization techniques involving halogenation were unsuccessful. Later efforts were concentrated on evaluating vacuum fusion and inert-gas fusion techniques. Two vacuum fusion methods and an inert-gas fusion method were found to be satisfactory in the 0.02 to 1.00 pct., oxygen range. These methods are described in detail. The coefficient of variation by any of the three methods is approximately 5 pct, While the main portion of this paper is devoted to the vacuum and inert-gas fusion methods, a resume of other suggested methods for analyzing titanium for oxygen also is given. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Nines has conducted research on titanium metal since 1938. This research included development of the Kroll process for the production of titanium (2)4, various sodium reduction processes for making titanium metal and lower valent titanium chloride-sodium chloride mixtures (17), and a fused salt electrolytic process for Me production of high-purity titanium metal and the recovery of titanium by electrorefining from off-grade materials (20).

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Following the introduction of roof shields to the U.S. longwall mining scene in 1975, the number of shield faces (faces supported by shields) has increased steadily, and the occurrence of accidents associated with ground control inadequacies at longwall operations has shown a downward trend. However, ground control problems in longwall mining still exist. New mining systems, however efficient, have run afoul of roof control. Shield faces have suffered extended stoppages because of roof cavities. In this report, the Bureau of Mines addresses the problem of longwall roof control. The report presents a review of foreign remedial and strata replacement techniques for longwall faces and evaluates their potential for domestic application. The technology reviewed includes meshing, chemical rock stabilization, cribbing, strain-absorbent modules, inflatables, synthetic foam, and monolithic fills.
