This study was made to present the mining methods and costs of a uranium mine typical of other mines in the highly productive Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison formation in New Mexico. Four mining methods have been used at the Section 23 mine: the retreat-room-and-pillar method, a sublevel-slicing method (also called top-slicing), the horizontal-cut-and-fill method, and a modification of the ring-drill method. The application of the methods at this mine and at other mines in the area should be of benefit to operators with similar problems. Ore bodies in the Section 23 mine are irregularly shaped and vary in size, in rock strength, in moisture content, and in uranium concentrations; different mining methods are required and mining costs are not constant. A 6-month period of operation at the Section 23 mine was analyzed and mining costs, not including amortization, depreciation, or Federal taxes, averaged about $6.80 per ton.

"This report presents the results of investigations of ore-testing projects assigned to the Ore-Dressing Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines, at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla Mo. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1941.The manner of approving ore-testing projects has been explained in a previous reports. 4/ The testing procedures likewise have been described. 5/The treatment methods described are based upon laboratory experiments with small amounts of sample and naturally are subject to the inherent, normal, limiting conditions of such procedure. It is not intended to describe treatments in detail, but rather to indicate applicable methods. Local operating conditions, when the laboratory results are applied to plant operations, may require further study. Large-scale pilot-plant tests should be made before commercial operations are begun, so that translation from the experimental stage will yield satisfactory results."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of gamma radiation on materials and chemical reactions to obtain information that could be of value in modern metallurgical practices . Various combinations of metals and their ores and compounds were irradiated in attempts to effect reactions that might be applicable in the extraction and separation of metal values from minerals and The types of reactions studied included complexing of salts , decomposition of hydrated salts , metal chlorination reactions , leaching of ores and minerals , halogen exchange , and various reducing reactions . All irradiations were performed at the Materials Testing Reactor Gamma Facility of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Idaho Falls , Idaho . Spent fuel elements were utilized as the source of the gamma radiation . Some irradiation - induced changes , ranging from mere color change to participation in chemical reactions , were noted . The greatest value of these investigations , however , was the experience acquired , which should be valuable in future explorations of similar nature .

In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas , it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process . This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities . The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented , and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed . It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred .

The proper disposition of phosphatic clays has been the subject of research and debated for years by phosphate producers, State and Federal research agencies, regulatory authorities, and environmentalists. To date, no "universal" solution exists for the ultimate disposl of phosphatic clays. This Bureau of Mines report examines the state of conventional clay disposal technology and reviews the technical progress of innovative alternatives. Twenty impoundment sites were investigated by the Bureau of Mines using geotechnical methods and laboratory analysis of cored samples. In addition, quasi-static cone penetrometer soundings were conducted to define clay and/or sand-clay interfaces en masse. Samples of the top, middle, and bottom hole segments were obtained at each station for laboratory studies of clay densities, pore fluids, plasticity, and mineralogical properties. The results of this study support the continued use of initial clay settling impoundments but emphasize the need for "in-line" systems to reduce the initial volumes of plant-generated phosphatic clays. The effective use of sand tailings is also encouraged to promote further consolidation of clays via self-weight stressing, sand-clay admixtures, and/or surcharging sand caps.

The literature contains little thermodynamic information regarding inter-oxidic compounds of the ferroalloy elements and, as a result, thermodynamic considerations of extractive and utilization processes involving these elements have been hampered. As part of a Bureau of Mines program to improve this situation, this paper reports the heats of formation of three calcium vanadates and two magnesium vanadates. There were no previous similar data for any of these compounds. The experimental method was hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry, using calorimetric reaction schemes involving the vanadates and their component oxides. The results were expressed as heats of formation from the component oxides and from the elements. Corresponding free energy of formation values were calculated. The data show that the calcium and magnesium vanadates are stable with respect to all possible decompositions in which vanadium remains pentavalent. This conclusion is similar to the one drawn by Koehler6 for three sodium vanadates.

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, to stimulate greater interest in safety in the mineral-extractive industries and to encourage the development of more effective accident-prevention programs. Since its beginning in 1925, thirty-four safety contests have been conducted. This publication reports results of the 11 annual contests for the period 1948-1958, inclusive. Mineral operations awarded the "Sentinels of Safety" trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group as well as those ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth are listed along with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling injuries. In addition, this publication contains statistical information reflecting the disabling work-injury experience of all other mines and quarries enrolled in the annual contests. The injury statistics of these operations are arranged in the six groups of the competition and through 1955 are the only data on injury-severity at noncoal mineral operations published by the Bureau of Hines. Recognition of the National Safety Competition in promoting safety has increased steadily during its 34 years. The number of plants participating in these annual competitions increased from 210 in 1925, its first year, to a record of 675 in 1958. The expanding scope of the National Safety Competition indicates that more mines and quarries in the United States are enrolling 90 all available means to promote safety on the job will be used. Safety contests like this are generally recognized, in the field of safety promotion, as an effective way to arouse and hold the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention programs. They tend to forge individual precautionary acts into group action centered on a common objective, such as winning the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy.

"The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along chemical and metallurgical lines to state definitely just what place it will occupy in the metallurgical industry. The theory upon which the process operates has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for the past twenty years, and research and experimental work has been conducted by many investigators.Much of the experimental work done has never been published, and it seems that the accumulation of such results if made known would be an important aid to the further development of the process. The object of this paper is, therefore, to bring salient features of the process to the attention of the metallurgical industry, both for the purpose of furnishing information, and receiving from interested parties any comments which the reading of this article may suggest. A bulletin covering the work done at the Intermountain experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, situated at Salt Lake City, Utah, is in course of preparation.The chloridizing roast is usually accompanied by appreciable losses due, to the volatilization of the metals as chlorides during the roast, these losses often running as high as 30 per cent, depending upon the temperature, the character of the ores and the associated gangue material. It was not until 1891 that Croasdale, (Croasdale, Stuart, Engineering and Mining Journal, Aug. 29 1903) by observing this and stack deposits from the chloridizing roast, recognized the possibility of making volatilization a major instead of a minor feature of the roast. He then made tests on a large number of tires from different, localities, the result of which showed the, general application of the process. The main difficulty, as stated, by Croasdale, was the lack of a suitable means for recovering the fume from the furnace gasesIn 1913, Cottrell (See Mining and Scientific Press, March 29, 1913; alsoTrans. This information circular is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines describing methods and costs at various mining operations. The Schwartzwalder uranium mine, situated about 20 miles west of Denver, Colo., is an important source of uranium ore in the Front Range. Production was begun in 1953, and nearly 36,500 tons of ore had been shipped by September 1, 1958. The mine is operated by Denver-Golden Oil & Uranium Co., Denver, Colo. Much interest has been shown in the property since uranium mineralization tit was found by Fred Schwartzwalder in 1949. The Atomic Energy Commission, Federal Geological Survey, Office of Minerals Exploration (formerly Defense Minerals Exploration Administration), and Federal Bureau of Mines have done work in the area, and various private concerns have shown interest in the property.

Like many gem materials, amber has a colorful history which may be traced through the writings of the ancients and the ornamental relics discovered from time to time. Like few gem materials, however, it is distinctly useful in products whose value has no connection with the gem industry. Long prized for its beauty, amber was fashioned into articles of jewelry and ornaments to please the fancy of ancient rulers and to find a place among treasured pos- sessions in their tombs; it has been used by adherents of various creeds for rosaries and other religious symbols; and although still sold for these pur- poses it also lends itself to such commercial purposes as raw material for varnish. Amber is only on the border-line of the mineral kingdom; actually it is of vegetable origin, having been formed as resin from trees of the conifer family that existed during the Tertiary period. It is the hardest of the fos- sil gums. The United States produces no amber, although a few occurrences are known. Most of the world's supply comes from East Prussia, where it is ob- tained from both land and sea. For many years pieces of amber were gathered from the Baltic by fishermen and deep-sea divers; and although about 10 per- cent of the Prussian amber is still recovered from the sea, most of the out- put is mined from open pits on the Samland Peninsula.

Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause permanent damage to the auditory nerve and/or its sensory components. Despite regulations and efforts by government and industry to reduce noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), it is still a problem in the U.S. coal mining industry. The Mine Safety and Health Administration noise standard (30 CFR3 62), which was enacted in September 2000, is aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. To address NIHL in various aspects of coal mining and provide the necessary information to effectively implement control technologies, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures. Noise surveys consisting of full-shift worker noise exposure (dose) determination, time-motion studies (task observations), and equipment and/or area noise profiling were completed in 8 underground coal mines, 10 surface coal mines, and 8 coal preparation plants. The studies revealed that more than 40% of all workers monitored were subject to noise exposures above 90 dBA TWA8. A summary of these studies is presented, their application to administrative and engineering controls is discussed, and exposure reduction methods are reviewed.

"This project constitutes the results of a geophysical field investigation undertaken in the mining areas in the vicinity of Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky.Results were obtained at well-known mines being worked for fluorspar. Of special interest was the determination of mineral trends at such mines, particularly in relation to the fault patterns, because of ore in them.This work also constitutes a comparison between the field information that can be obtained by purely geological means and the additional information obtained by applying geophysical surveys to the same areas.As the mineralization in this area is controlled almost surely by the faults therein, the great importance of locating faults cannot be over emphasized. Accordingly, there has been incorporated herein the analyses as well as the application of electrical resistivity methods for fault determinations.In the western part of Kentucky, particularly in that area designated as the Cave-In-Rock quadrangle by the United States Geological Survey, is located the center of the fluorspar mining district of Kentucky. From the mining as well as commercial viewpoint, this area is of considerable interest and importance. It has been described by Currier4/ as a large structural dome that collapsed, through faulting, into a mosaic composed of a main fault pattern that has a strike to the northeast in sedimentary formations. Accompanying this main fault pattern are a large number of irregular faults. This fault complex is also traversed by a dike pattern that has a regional strike for this region focusing a northwesterly direction. The faulting occurred before the dike intrusions, the latter being composed largely of peridotite rocks. According to Reed,5/ most of the metallic mineralization, composed chiefly of galena and sphalerite, occurs at or near the Intersection of the dikes with the faults, indicating a possible igneous origin of the ore deposits. Reed adds that the fluorspar generally does not follow this rule but may also be found in other portions of the faulted zone not directly related to dike intrusions. The area may be considered of equal interest in the occurrence of lead and zinc and in the occurrence of fluorspar controlled by the faults. Hatmaker and Davis6/ give detailed information concerning the form of the ore bodies and economic factors that control ore production in this area; they also suggest the application of geophysical methods in this territory. Ulrich and Smith7/ also discuss geological details in this area. This area is therefore of interest, whether examined from a large structural point of view or from a very detailed angle. The former will assist in determining the origin of the mineralization and its economic possibilities, whereas the latter will give details concerning fault locations and their geologically and geophysically controlling features. This work was undertaken as a pilot investigation relating to the study of the location of fault occurrences, in which it was attempted to determine the location of faults as well as the fault patterns in certain isolated areas. No effort was made to identify the mineralization from the gouge material in the faulted zones; this problem was left for subsequent investigations."

As report covers the installation and testing of a permanent seismic monitor system at the Loveridge Mine in West Virginia. The testing of the system showed several things: 1. Getting the seismic data hack to the central computer in a usable form is possible 2. It is possible to detect small explosions. 3. The use of this system as a auxiliary system to detect hammer blows from miners trapped in the area of one of the geophones is possible.

"Summary: Fibroblast proliferation and enhancement of collagen synthesis are key steps in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. The current investigation presents a fibroblast proliferation assay to detect the release of competence factors from pneumocytes. The specific objective of this study was to define cell culture conditions for fibroblasts that would allow selective detection of competence factors in test media. The results indicate the following: (a) fibroblasts should be cultured for 2 days in plasma-free medium rather than 2% plasma to assure complete quiescence; (b) 1% plasma was optimum for producing progression activity for the bioassay of a competence factor, while 0.5% plasma did not produce sufficient progression activity (yielding false negatives) and 2% plasma often contained significant competence activity (yielding false positives); and (c) fresh plasma should be used since the progression activity of plasma was adversely affected by freezing and thawing. Under these conditions, this bioassay can be employed with either rat or human lung fibroblasts to detect competence factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), at levels as low as 25 ng/ml.Fibrotic lung disease, as a consequence of occupational exposure to silica dust. is characterized by the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung and the progressive loss of pulmonary diffusion capacity. Proliferation of pulmonary fibroblasts and enhanced synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis ( 1 ). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (2). Some cytokines stimulate fibroblast proliferation by activating specific phases of the cell cycle (3,4). In particular, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (G0 ) cells into the G1 phase of the cell cycle (5). Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P). on the other hand, regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from G 1 into the S phase (5,6). These two classes of cytokines have been termed competence and progression factors, respectively. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which quiescent fibroblasts are exposed to culture supematants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum (FCS), which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (7-9). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using platelet-poor .plasma [lacking competence factor(s)] as a substitute for FCS bas been described (I 0, 11 ). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors."

[The shrinkage of coke after formation is one of the variables that affects the net expansion of the change in both industrial and test ovens. Various test results have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; out no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors. While investigating the reactivity of cokes made by the BM-AGA method,6/ Reynolds7/ found that granular low-temperature cokes shrink considerably then reheated to higher temperatures. This shrinkage was large enough to influence the behavior of the charge (net expansion or contraction) in a coke oven to a marked extent. Since that time the Bureau of nines has investigated the shrinkage of coke different methods, all of thick had one common objective - the elimination of the effect of other factors, such as swelling in the plastic range, which could either partly or completely mask the shrinkage of the coke. Increased employment and a lower accident-frequency rate were the outstanding features of the metal- and nonmetal-mining4 industries of the United States in 1939 compared with 1933, according to reports furnished by individual mining companies to the Bureau of Vines, United States Department of the Interior. Except for 1937, the reports for 1939 showed gains both in number of employees and number of mar -hours worked over all years since 1929. The accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of exposure to mining hazards was lower than in any year since 1925. Reports for 1939 revealed a total of 111,909 men employed in and about mines, an increase of inure than 8 percent over 1931 The total volume of labor performed at all mires was slightly more than 299 million plan-hours, an increase of mare than 10 percent over 1938. As these gains suggest, the average employee had a longer period of work in 1939, the increase amounting to r workdays per employee.
