The drilling of horizontal boreholes as a means of degasification in advance of mining has been tried at Jim Walter Resources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. In a joint venture with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, a series of horizontal drainage boreholes have been drilled in the panels of an advancing continuous miner section with impressive results. The combined methane gas production rate has ranged from 205,000 to 680,000 cfd (cubic feet per day} with individual "in-seam" horizontal holes producing up to 332,000 cfd. The methane liberation from the ribs for the entire panel length has decreased from an average of 8.75 cfm (cubic feet per minute) per 100 feet of entry to 4.05 cfm per 100 feet, a 54 per cent reduction. The actual gas concentration as measure at the surface discharge point normally ranges from 85 per cent to 95 per cent methane. As a consequence of the significant reduction in methane liberation rates from the panels of the section, a 50 per cent increase in productivity from the section has been realized.

Because of the danger to life and property in a coal mine if an oil or natural gas well should be accidentally intersected during mining operations, certain precautionary measures should be carried out prior to entering previously unmined areas. The locations of all wells both at the surface and at the depth of the coalbed should be accurately determined. The condition of the well should be learned from surface observations, and more importantly, from subsurface examination by geophysical logging devices where possible. It is also desirable to learn the physical properties of the hydrocarbon-bearing rock formation and the hydrocarbon fluids. The major hazard presented by oil or natural gas wells to mining operations is that of explosion and fire due to the rapid release of gas into the mine atmosphere. Wellbore pressure, the principal index of danger, should be determined by one or more of the methods described and by a service company such as those listed in the appendix. Because of high pressures involved and the consequent hazard, much emphasis has been placed on underground storage of natural gas in areas containing minable coalbeds. Maps are shown of the principal coal producing areas and the locations of currently active gas storage reservoirs. A checklist has been included of factors to be considered when mining coal in an area where oil or gas wells exist.

MOST OF THE key items in the bituminous-coal and Lignite industry declined in 1954 compared with 1953. Production, consumption, exports, average value per ton, men working, and days worked all declined; however, in the field of mechanization, the percentages mechanically loaded, mechanically cleaned, mined by auger, and mined by stripping all increased, as did production per men per day. Production.-The output of soft coal in 1954-391.7 million tons- was 14 percent less than the 457.3 million tons produced in 1953. The lower production in 1954 was due largely to a sharp reduction in consumption in the United States and to a drop in exports.

This report describes the tri-n-butyl phosphate extraction of cerium (IV) from a sulfate leach liquor prepared from a bastnaesite concentrate as well as from pure eerie nitrate solutions. The work was done on a laboratory scale using separatory funnels. Extraction from pure cerium solutions entailed no great difficulties; however, extraction from the bastnaesite solution proved more difficult, mainly because of the inhibiting effect of the sulfate ion. Despite this, procedures were developed for obtaining good single-state cerium extraction (95+ percent) and a high-purity product (99+ percent), although the maximization of both cannot be achieved simultaneously. This necessitates a compromise in any extraction scheme.

This report describes investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines from 1957 through 1959 in the Roseland anorthosite-titanium belt of Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va., for the purpose of studying the titanium resources of the area. Three titanium deposits containing much saprolite ore derived from the decomposition of anorthosite and diorite were selected for detailed study Following a reconnaissance of the reported titanium occurrences in the belt. These three deposits occur in or are associated with anorthosite. Most of the occurrences are situated on or near the contact between the anorthosite and the gneissic country rock. The saprolite deposits are as much as 1.5 miles long, 1,000 feet wide, and 100 teat deep and contain significant reserves of titanium-bearing material estimated in excess of 20 million tons. Where it was penetrated by drilling, the unweathered rock beneath the saprolite contains nearly the same titanium values as the saprolite.

The discovery of the Oklahoma City field and its .rapid development into one of the major oil-producing districts is an outstanding epoch in the history of the petroleum industry not only of .Oklahoma but also of the United States. The relatively great depth to which the wells were drilled and the large initial production of high-gravity oil are of special significance. The field has boon under proration almost from the time that its development began, and many new production problems have developed out of the changed conditions of operation. The discovery well was first tested in December 1928 at a depth of 6,402 feet, with an initial production of 4,847 barrels of 38.5° A.P.I. gravity and several months later was completed at a depth of 6,624 feet. The large initial production, the high pressure, and the large gas volume in the different horizons of the discovery well suggested the potential possibilities of gas and oil, production in formations of Pennsylvanian and pre-Pennsylvanian age.

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines investigated the northern Darby Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, AK, for radioactive mineral deposits. Uranium is concentrated in silicified shear zones in biotite quartz monzonite of the Darby pluton. The shear zones are best exposed in steep, narrow, avalanche gullies; they are characterized by radiometric anomalies and by uranium and thorium geochemical anomalies. Radiometric and geochemical anomalies are also found over altered biotite quartz monzonite where there are no visible shear zones. The radiometric and uranium anomalies are often spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with alkaline mafic and felsic dikes. Similar geochemical and radiometric anomalies over discolored altered zones and geochemical anomalies in sediments downstream from the altered zones indicate that additional areas may also be favorable targets for uranium deposits. Analyses of panned, heavy mineral concentrates show no significant concentrations of uranium or thorium in resistant heavy minerals. This indicates that radioactive elements in the Darby pluton are concentrated in soluble, nonresistant minerals that may constitute a recoverable uranium resource.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. The Tri-State zinc-lead catalog, compilation of which was initiated by the Bureau of Mines in August 1949, is designed to provide a continuing record of avail-able drill-hole logs and maps of mine developments in the zinc-lead district in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, and northeastern Oklahoma. The maps and data thus preserved constitute a reservoir of factual information readily available to individuals and firms interested in planning mineral explorations, to Government agencies for formulating estimates or ore reserves, and to the mining industry in the district for general uses. The areas to be included in the catalog embrace the explored and mined tracts within 760,000 acres of the more active western part of the district. The consensus among local mine operators, geologists, and mining engineers is that over 100,000 boles, costing more than $30,000,000, have been drilled in the district. Records of some of the early drilling and mine developments are destroyed or lost, but the Bureau of Mines has copies of about 47,500 drill-hole logs and is accumulating and recording on microfilm those that are currently available. As of May 1, 1954, the logs of approximately 28,000 drill holes had been microfilmed and are available for inspection at the Bureau of Mines office, Joplin, Mo.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of a chromatographic gas analyzer in determining the concentration of combustion products in gas produced during field and laboratory thermal oil-recovery tests. Several parameters (carrier-gas flow, cell current, sample size, and temperature) known to affect quantitative analyses were studied using a commercially available dual-column, dual-detector chromatographic gas analyzer which had been modified to provide close control of these variables. The apparatus made possible a much closer control of air-and gas-injection rates and provided adequate data for performing material-balance calculations and for determining oxygen utilization during the laboratory and field combustion tests. The chromatographic analysis also aided materially in evaluating and measuring bypassing and gas travel times and in detecting high-permeability zones that were present in the reservoir.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 419 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1964 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863/ and 576.4/ Six previous publications have been made to present the results of 6,293 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1964. Appendix I. Part 1: Description Of Geology & Reserves System Introduction The Ore Evaluation and Reserve programs have been developed to aid in the evaluation of coal deposits, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The "Weighted Moving Average" technique used provides considerable flexibility in dealing with diverse parameters with differing distribution characteristics. Determination of Model Constants "a" and "k" - Unit 1 The flexibility of the method in dealing with diverse value parameter distributions lies in its ability to cater to the individual characteristics of each. These characteristics are embodied in the values determined for constants "a" and "k", namely, local and regional variations in value distributions, respectively. The empirical method used attempts to optimize the "a" - "k" combination. Realistic values for "a" and "k" are entered into the program together with sample values for the required parameters and their respective coordinate location values. All the values within a specified radius from the point being evaluated are used to interpolate a value at that point. (Note, the interpolated point is the location of one of the boreholes, values of which are not used in the calcula¬tion.) 3n a similar manner, interpolated values are calculated for each borehole location and for each parameter. This is done for each possible combination of "a" and "k".

Through the use of statistical methods, estimates of metal content and tonnage of an ore body made by using data from 18 diamond-drill holes are compared with actual values established with data from 1,829 drift samples. The reliability of the estimates made from the drill holes is assessed in several ways. The relationship of metal content (assay-width product) to grade is explained. It is concluded that useful estimates can be made from 18 drill holes provided that reasonable assumptions are made and certain risks accepted. The ore body investigated is the Don Tomas vein of the Frisco mine, San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Flammability studies conducted to date on stratified methane - air and pentane - air mixtures in air indicate that location and extent of a flammable layer are affected by molecular diffusion , gas motion , and propagation of flame . In initially quiescent mixtures , the lower limit - of - flammability zone may be determined by assuming molecular diffusion alone governs mixing rate . The upper limit - of - flammability zone can be predicted in this manner only for stratified layers with small concentration gradients ( less than 0.2 volumepercent per inch ) ; where large concentration gradients are encountered ( for example , as much as 30 volume - percent per inch ) , the initial - mixture methane concentrations that yield flammable mixtures are larger than anticipated . Flames propagating through heterogeneous quiescent methane - air atmospheres in the direction of the concentration gradient exhibit flame speeds at any point that corresponds to the flame speed of the homogeneous gas mixture having the same gas composition as that of the point in the heterogeneous system . In flowing mixtures with large concentration gradients , the degree of mixing prior to ignition does not appear to affect the flame velocity and emitted radiation appreciably in a 6.5 - ft - diameter gallery .

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite having length to diameter ratios of 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, and 0.5:1 were broken in axial compression to determine whether lateral end constraint affected the breaking strength. Steel rings bonded to the ends of the model pillars with epoxy provided, during the loading cycle, a lateral end constraint of about 17 to 30 percent of the average axial stress. The effect of this constraint was to increase the breaking strength of the rock as compared to cylindrical pillars without constraint. The percentage increase in breaking strength varied with rock type and increased as the length to diameter ratio decreased. The maximum increase in breaking strength was 35 percent for marble pillars having a length to diameter ratio of 0.5:1. A theory was developed which relates the expected constraint to the physical properties of the ring and rock.

The metal and nonmetallic mineral mines (excluding coal mines) of the United States had a more favorable safety record in 1935 than in any year except 1931 and 1932 since annual statistics of accidents first became available in 1911. The accident rate was even lower than that for 1911, when the recorded rate probably did not reflect all of the accidents that actually occurred because many companies had not yet begun to keep complete records of accidents, especially those causing only minor injuries, and when, therefore, the number of accidents revealed by the companies' reports to the Bureau of Mines was probably not as complete as that reported for later years. Compared. with 1911, the accident rate covering fatal and nonfatal injuries in. 1935 decreased 13 percent. Compared with 1925, when the rate was the highest ever reported, the rate for 1935 decreased 47 percent and compared with 1934, 7 percent. The progress in safety which the mines of the country made in 1935 was not confined to any section or mining region; it was shared by a majority of the mining States and applied to underground mining operations, to open-pit mining, and to work at surface shops and yards. The rate for underground mining declined 8 percent from 1934; the rate for open-pit mining declined 14 percent, and that for surface shops and yards 12 percent.
