The Copper Canyon lead-zinc mine is in the Battle Mountain. District, Lander County, Nev. It was discovered in 1866 and mined for copper until 1935 and for copper and gold until l948, when the main production became lead-zinc ore. The rocks in the area are carboniferous (Pennsylvanian and Mississippian) sedimentaries that have been intruded by quartz monzonite of Mesozoic age. They have been intensely folded, faulted, and tilted. Lead-zinc ore occurs as sulfides disseminated along fractured zones in a conglomerate arid hornfels. Development was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, making maps and. cross sections, and exploring the deposit by diamond drilling from underground. Eighteen holes were drilled, for a total of 2,594 feet. This report contains a brief history of the property and a description of mining methods and beneficiation of the ore, geology, ore deposits and drilling done by the Bureau of Mines. It also contains detailed analyses of the ore samples taken and logs of the holes drilled.

Thermodynamic properties were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for lithium metasilicate (Li2Si03) and lithium disilicate (Li2Si205). Their enthalpies of formation were investigated by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard values are ?Hf°298 -393.8 ± 0.8 kcal/mole for Li2Si03, and ?Hf°298 -611.8 ± 1.0 kcal/mole for LiSi205. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper-block drop calorimetry from 298 to 1,404 K for Li2Si03, and from 298 to 1,281 K for Li2Si205. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined adiabatically from 6 to 305 K for Li2Si205 only. The derived standard entropy is S°298 = 29.20 ± 0.10 cal/deg-mole. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature, and resulting properties of ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf were tabulated as a function of temperature.

"INTRODUCTION It is a recognized fact that in the coal-mining industry coal dust must be allayed to promote the safety and health of underground workers. The Bureau of Mines has been cognizant of the hazards of coal dust for many years, and the necessity of controlling such dust was acknowledged when the Federal Mine Safety Code was formulated. Accumulations of coal dust increase the explosion hazard in a bituminous-coal mine and facilitate the propagation of an explosion. Some of the coal dust produced in mining is inhaled by the workers and contributes to respiratory infection. Impairment of vision and personal discomfort resulting from working in dense clouds of coal dust reflect unfavorably on the efficiency of workmen. Considerable coal dust, originating at the working face, is carried in the ventilating current and deposited elsewhere in the mine, thereby increasing the explosion hazard. It is apparent, therefore, that if coal dust could be allayed effectively at its points of origin, the dust-explosion hazard in bituminous-coal mines would be reduced greatly.Although dust control is practiced in many bituminous-coal and lignite mines, the extent and effectiveness of control for the, entire industry-is not generally known. The purpose of this circular is to present such information clearly, and to encourage coal-mine operators to install dust- allaying equipment.Factual data on dust-allaying practices at working faces in a large number of the bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States were .compiled from reports on recent Federal inspections of these mines, The information is presented in tabular form to permit review of the dust-allaying practices of a substantial part of the industry, by States, and also according to employment, and loading practice."

"This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations ni the Unietd States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperating agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CRF) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC)3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.4/The present report presents analytical data for 1,381 samples, representing the products of approximately 75 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were secured during July and the first half of August, 1945. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples – regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 733 samples, 229 items, and 57 brands; premium-price, 504 samples, 197 items, and 56 brands; third-grade, 84 samples, 28 items and 12 brands. The Bureau of Mines studied tailings samples from 11 large-scale western copper operations to determine the potential for recovery of rutile and other critical and strategic minerals. Up to 15 pounds per short ton (lb/st) Ti02 was found ion these samples; however, only 9 to 44 pct of the Ti02 was liberated rutile. For one sample, gravity preconcentra-tion, grinding, and flotation recovered 34 pct of the Ti02 in a 54.8-pct-Ti02 concentrate. Over 0.38 Ib/st W was found in some of the tailings sampleso Scheelite was identified as the major W mineral. Nine of the eleven samples contained about 0.02 to 0.18 Ib/st Co. Pyrite was the principal Co-bearing sulfide mineral, with Co contained in about one-fifth of the pyrite grains. Up to 30 pct of the Co was concentrated in a bulk sulfide flotation concentrate.

This report contains the results of an analysis of the Logan oilfield, Hocking County, Ohio, and predicts the recovery of oil from the Clinton sand by waterflooding. Core analyses, electrical and radioactivity well-survey logs, reservoir-fluid analysis, and geologic and production data were used for this study. Considered in the evaluation were the reservoir geometry, depth, lithology, continuity of the rock properties, fluid saturations, fluid characteristics, rock wettability, and relative permeability-fluid saturation relationships. The study indicates that a properly engineered waterflood should recover approximately 135 barrels per acre-foot of effective sand. The predicted recovery warrants the initiation of a pilot waterflood in this field.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has promulgated rules to limit the exposure of metal/nonmetal underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). These rules have resulted in many types of control tech­nologies being implemented including diesel particulate filters (DPF). The passive type DPF is the most desirable because it requires little maintenance and it regenerates while the vehicle is operating. One problem with passive DPFs is that many vehicles cannot develop the sustained exhaust temperatures needed to initiate DPF regeneration, and thus it is required that the DPF be catalyzed to decrease the temperature needed for regeneration. In some past studies, such catalyzed filters have been shown to cause an increase in the nitrogen dioxide concentrations in the exhaust, resulting in a potential health hazard. In this study, a lightly catalyzed DPF along with a fuel-born catalyst were employed to help reduce the DPM emissions from a 980F loader used for cleanup in a stone mine. After 30 days of use, the filter continued to regenerate successfully at the exhaust temperatures generated by this loader, substantially reduced DPM concentrations emitted in the exhaust, and did not cause a measurable increase in nitrogen dioxide levels that could be attributed to the device.

"The Lewisburg No. 2 mine of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company is located in Jefferson County, Alabama, about 7 miles due north of Birmingham. At this point the coal from the Mary Lee seam when coked in by-product ovens yields an excellent quality of metallurgical coke suitable for use in the iron blast furnace; it is also an excellent steam coal. In mining, all three benches are worked. Coarse impurities are largely gobbed by the miners underground.In addition to giving the data obtained from screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw coal, this report presents the results of slotted-screen tests to show the proportions of flaky particles in selected sizes, and the results of tests to show how much coal is liberated from impurities by crushing the coarsest sizes. These data have been obtained in connection with an extensive study of coal-washing now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with U. cooperation of the different operators of Alabama. As the work progresses other reports will follow containing furtner data on the washability both of the Mary Lee seam and of other seams in Alabama and giving the results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.Although a great amount of investigative work on the preparation of the Mary Lee scam was previously carried on by the various coal companies of the district, comparatively little of this information has been published. In governmental publications three references have been found. Forbes5 gives a number of sections with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mines. Gandrud and Britton'' show sections of this seam at Flat Creek and New Castle; they also give the specific gravity and ash contents of the partings of coal and impurities. In their paper Yancey and Fraser7 include washability studies and washing data from the Sayreton mine of the Republic Iron & Steel Co."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled data on the major causes of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents related to mining, and their associated costs, for the 1980-85 period. Specific electrical problem areas were identified, allowing future research to be focused on reducing the frequency of these occurrences. Recommendations for reducing the number of electrical accidents and injuries are provided. The four mining sectors for which data were gathered and compiled are (1) underground coal mines, (2) surface at underground coal mines, (3) underground metal-nonmetal mines, and (4) surface at underground metal-nonmetal mines. Nine categories of information pertaining to specific aspects of the accident are used in this report: activity engaged in when the accident occurred, source of injury, job title, mining method, location, machine, nature of injury, accident type, and part of body affected. The number of years of experience at the specific job the employee was performing when the accident occurred, time of accident, and in the case of nonfatal accidents, the total days lost per year, are also summarized.

"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Systematic waterflooding was first tried in Washington County, Okla., in 1937, when a 40-acre project was begun in secs. 24, 29, 32, and 33, T. 27 N., R. 13 E., jointly by the Keener Oil Co. and the Phillips Petroleum Co. The property later was sold to Lee Morrison. A second project was begun in 1941 in sec. 14, T. 6 N., R. 12 E., by the Oklahoma Oil Corp. Both projects were abandoned by the end of 1942. A third project was begun in 1945 and the fourth in 1948, but 1949 actually was the beginning of intensive waterflooding development in Washington County. The results of previous waterflooding projects are described in Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2 3 4/ Oil production in the county followed a similar trend, dropping to a low of 990,000 barrels in 1945, then steadily increasing until 1956, when more than 4 mil-lion barrels of oil was produced. Most of the increase in oil production is directly attributable to water injection.

Exploring for additional ore bodies on the property of the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Co.'s property at Idria, Calif., was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. It comprised a study of the geology, mapping, and searching for additional cinnabar by diamond drilling from both surface and underground. Diamond-drill equipment was moved to the project in November 1941, and drilling was completed in.May 1942. Sixteen holes aggregating 2,580 feet were drilled. Diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines developed information regarding ore structures that proved valuable to the operators in planning underground prospecting that led directly to the discovery of high-grade ore.

Past experience has shown that the penetration characteristics of the 10-mm nylon cyclone used on approved personal sampling equipment are significantly different from those determined in the laboratory using a nonpulsating flow source. The Bureau of Mines has developed and recommended a modification to presently approved equipment that will alleviate this difference. However, as a result of this modification, a new relationship for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal sampling equipment to equivalent concentrations as measured with an MRE instrument will have to be established. This Bureau of Mines report describes the underground sampling program conducted to establish a new factor for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with personal sampling equipment, modified with a recommended pulsation damping device, to an equivalent concentration as measured with an MRE gravimetric dust sampler.

[Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes tie construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractioning; column and. gives curtain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production. of lubricating distillates. The apparatus was designed and built to produce lubricating distillates under as nearly ideal conditions as possible, in order that a subsequent study of the characteristics of the distillates could be made.]

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) conducted a mineral resource investigation of the French Creek-Patrick Butte study area, in west central Idaho during 1989. No mineral resources or significant occurrences were identified. Other than small scale placer gold, no mineral production is known or recorded. At least 100 lode and 150 placer claims have been located in the study area. Most of the area was examined by ground or areal surveys, and 110 lode and 60 placer samples were taken. Four lode prospects were examined in detail, and all placer claim locations were sampled.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with natural gas was noted as early as at Point Albino, Canada. The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence was by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of test Texas and the Texas Panhandle, the Production of "sour" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor--frequently a major problem--in the drilling and operation of many wells in those areas. The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is made of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen iron the standpoint of safety and health hazards, hydrogen sulphide in the petroleum industry has been discussed in a number of publications. Likewise, the problem of hydrogen-sulphide corrosion of production equipment has been given considerable attention in the literature.

Techniques were developed for preparing metallurgical-grade copper powder from industrially produced cement copper. Flotation was used for rejecting discrete gangue particles, acid leaching to remove residual iron and aluminum, hydrogen reduction to eliminate oxygen, sintering to consolidate the fine-sized copper, and grinding to obtain copper powder. Powders prepared from six different cement copper samples contained, in percent, 98.5 to 99.0 Cu, 0.10 to 0.05 Fe, 0.10 to 0.08 insoluble material and the remaining individual impurities less than 0.15 percent. The apparent density, flow characteristics, and other physical properties were suitable for powder metallurgy applications. An economic evaluation showed that this process was economically feasible. Processing costs appeared modest when considering that copper powder commands a price normally about 17.5 cents per pound over that of electrolytic copper.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the White Mountain mercury deposit, in the Kuskokwim River Basin, to better determine the extent of mercury mineralization and to encourage its development by private industry. A program of diamond drilling, augering, bulldozer trenching, and sampling was carried on during four field seasons, from 1960 to 1963, inclusive. Significant amounts of cinnabar, with only trace amounts of arsenic and antimony, occur in dolomite over an area about 4,000 feet long and 1,500 feet wide. The deposit differs from other mercury deposits in the Kuskokwim River Basin by the absence of silica-carbonate and rhyolite intrusives. Small-scale mining was started in 1963 as the result of Bureau investigation and continued during the summers of 1964 and 1965. The investigations indicate that open pit mining might be the most feasible method of working this deposit.

Placer gold and platinum-group metals (PGM) In the Slate Creek area, northern Chistochina Mining District, are derived from silicified and carbonate-altered, Cretaceous-Tertiary (?) dikes and related mafic and ultramafic rocks. Gold In the placer deposits is also derived from Tertiary conglomerate and altered Jurassic-Cretaceous argilllte. The argilllte and Igneous bedrock sources show a unique Ag-Au-Cu-Hg-PGM association that Is attributed to a combination of magmatic, hydrothermal, and supergene processes. The bedrock and placer deposits contain a variety of gold silver-lead-copper and PGM alloys. The observed geochemical, mineralogic, and alteration features are consistent with current geological models for turbidite-hosted gold deposits. No economic gold or PGM lodes were Identified, but several areas warranting more detailed investigation were Identified. Conventional geochemical sampling and analysis of small sample splits weighing between 10 and 30 grams were shown to be unreliable as a consistent means of identifying gold- and PGM-bearing bedrock. Pan concentration of pulverized rock samples was shown to be a more effective, but still Imperfect means of Identifying gold and PGM source rocks. Geochemical data and mineralogic examination indicate that gold and PGM in potential lode sources are very finely and erratically disseminated, are chemically combined with other elements, and may not be entirely free-milling or amenable to simple gravity concentration.
