This volume describes software developed for programmable calculators that is useful in the analysis and design of mine electrical power systems. The programs are equally useful for any industrial or commercial power system. All programs are written for both the HP-97 and the TI-59 programmable calculators. Listings of both versions of the twelve programs that were developed appear in the report. The programs that were developed can be broken into two groups. The first group encompasses design-oriented programs. The second group encompasses analysis programs. For each program the following items are provided: a description of the program's capabilities, the solution technique used, instructions on how to use the program, a worked out example with data and results and, finally, listings of the programs for the HP-97 and TI-59 programmable calculators. Typical problems that can be attacked with these programs include ground bed design, selection of contactor size, fuse size, relay settings, instantaneous overcurrent trip settings for trailing cables, allowable cyclic cable loading, short circuit analyses, prediction of transient voltages and others.

In keeping with past custom, it is the purpose of this publication to bring up to date previously published lists of equipment that meets safety standards of the bureau of Mines so that the mining industry may be informed as to the development and availability of equipment that can be used safely. The present lists supplement those in Bulletin 543. Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953; Information Circular 7722, Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54; and Information Circular [40], Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1955-56. These [ew] lists also contain equipment meeting those standards revised since the last listing. A revision of Schedule 16C (now Schedule 16D4/) was officially approved on September 28. 1958. Schedule 29 was another standard revised in 1958. The revision was officially approved on September 8. 1958, and is known as Schedule 29A5/ .

Low- temperature heat capacities of strontium chloride (7° - 300° K) and strontium fluoride ( 11 ° - 300 ° K) were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter . Smooth values of heat capacity , entropy , enthalpy function , and free - energy function were calculated from the heat - capacity data . The smooth values are reported at 10 ° K intervals and at 273.15 ° and 298.15 ° K.

This paper is a preliminary report of the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-second semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A more detailed discussion of the whole survey is in preparation and will be published as a companion, report. The second paper, in addition to giving a more complete summary of the data included in this report, will present results of the determination of copper-strip core lion (method 530.22), color (method 10.11), sulphur content (method 520.11) evaporation residue (method 530.1), and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam oven method.9 The retail price at the time the sample was taken and tax will also be stated for each sample. The present paper deals specifically with data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation. It has been the feeling of some investigators that the practice, followed in previous semiannual surveys, of grouping all types of motor fuel together without discriminating between "competitive price gasoline," benzol blends, Ethyl gasoline, "high-test" fuels, etc., has detracted from their usefulness because the data did not permit drawing conclusions in regard to any one type of fuel, and tended to obscure differences between fuels of the various types. Therefore, in order to remedy this condition, the samples of the present survey have been divided into two groups; one called "competitive-price gasoline" and a second group called "premium-price motor fuels."

"An airborne dust study was undertaken at a Southwestern Pennsylvania underground bituminous coal mine by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries in 1964 for the purpose of making recommendations and requirements regarding compliance with health and safety aspects of The Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, approved by the legislature on July 17, 1961. The study was designed to accurately represent the airborne dust conditions of the subject mine. Sampling by midget impinger of specific worker locations throughout the mine was accomplished. Sample analyses yielded dust concentrations to mppcf, particle size determinations in cumulative per cent less than specified cut-off diameters, and determinations of free silica percentages in total dust samples. The data from this study is further analyzed, and the results are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, enacted in 1961, prompted a study of respirable coal mine dust by the Department of Mines and Minerals Industry in 1964. In recognition of their obligation for ensuring the health and safety of bituminous coal miners, the department set out to characterize the airborne dust of mines throughout the commonwealth. The purpose of the studies was to make recommendations and requirements for compliance with the law and for control of airborne coal mine dust in Pennsylvania mines.One such study was undertaken at an underground bituminous coal mine operating in the Pittsburgh Seam in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The study was desig11ed to sample specific worker locations throughout the mine site and characterize the respirable dust relative to each of them. A midget impinger was used to gather respirable range dust samples during an 8-hour shift. Continuous miner operator, roof bolter, stoper bolter, loading machine operator, shuttle car operator, gathering motorman, mainline motorman, and rotary dumper jobs were sampled underground. In addition, barge mover, coal sampler, fine coal operator, heavy media operator, and boiler room attendant occupations were sampled on the surface. The surface sampling was over a 71-hour shift because of UMWA contract provisions."

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 224 natural as samples from 18 States. Of the total, 191 sam¬ples were collected during calendar year 1981. The remaining 33 samples were collected during previous years, but releases, granting permission to publish were not received until 1981. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and special helium apparatus described previously (1-2).3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-five publications have presented the results of 12,827 gas analyses made prior to 1981. The first three bulletins (1-3) contain analyses and related data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24) containing 7,609 analyses of samples collected since 1960.

During this study in 1983, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined one mine and five prospects in the Greenwater Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA). No mineral resources were identified within the WSA. Principal mineral commodities in the WSA are gold and silver with minor lead, and zinc. Two properties have significance; sample analyses indicate the Salsberry Prospect may have gold-silver-lead-zinc resources, and the Graham Jem Mine may have gold resources. The likelihood for development is greatest at the Salsberry Prospect, although the only recorded production from the study area was from the Graham Jem Mine; in 1908 less than 1 ton of gold-bearing ore valued at $25,000 per ton was produced. Gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper minerals in the WSA are associated with rhyolite dikes and quartz veins in Precambrian gneissic rocks, commonly concentrated in sheared zones along the dikes and veins. Although known to contain silver-lead deposits elsewhere, Precambrian Noonday Dolomite sampled inside the WSA contained no significant mineral values. Much of the WSA is covered by relatively unmineralized Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic rocks. The Bureau collected 140 rock samples at four adits, nine shafts, four trenches, and 33 prospect pits in the WSA. In 1983, 14 lone claims and one millsite within the study area were current. No patented claims, placer claims, or coal, mineral, oil and gas, or geothermal leases were in the WSA.

"INTRODUCTION An important phase of the accident-preventing program of the Bureau Mines is the determination of the explosion hazards of various combustible gases, vapors, and liquids encountered in mining and allied industries and the development of methods of eliminating or mitigating them.Recently, isobutane has become a commercially important raw material in the production of aviation gasoline by the alkylation process. 4/ in which isoparaffins are combined with olefins to give higher molecular weight compounds of branched-chain structure.Because of the anticipated commercial importance of isobutane in industry, it has been deemed necessary to study and determine its general explosion haz¬ards. This report gives its limits of inflammability, minimum ignition temper¬atures, and the amounts of nitrogen and carbon dioxide required to render isobutane-air mixtures noninflammable."

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, developed the property of the Tungsten Metals Corp. by surface trenching and diamond drilling from November 1940 to June 1941 and from August 1943 to December 1943. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves of tungsten in the downward extension and lateral eastern extension of three major tungsten-bearing quartz veins. The property is 50 miles south of Ely, White Pine County, Nev., in the Minerva Mining District. Tungsten ore was discovered in the district in 1915, and mining started in 1916. The tungsten ore bodies occur as shoots in quartz veins that occur along faults in limestone. With the exception of a small-scale leasing operation in 1932, the property was idle from 1919 until 1936, when Tungsten Metals Corp. was organized to acquire the mines. Production ceased in May 1945, and the mines were idle until leased in 1947. Development by the Bureau of Mines during 1940 and 1941 consisted of surface trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling 37 holes for a total of 6,959 feet. Subsequent drilling of eight holes, totaling 3,067 feet, in 1943 disclosed additional reserves. This report sets forth in considerable detail the exploration work completed by the Bureau and briefly describes the mining and milling methods employed. Diamond-drill halo logs and sample analyses are shown graphically in the illustrations that accompany the report.

Factual geometries are considered for X- ray scattering studies of weakly absorbing materials by both reflection and transmission methods . These studies are usually made on slab specimens to obtain adequate scattered intensities ; however , the intensities are appreciably influenced by absorption of the X-rays in passing through the specimens . Conventional equations derived to account for this absorption are based on idealized geometries , but for polycrystalline carbons the use of idealized geometries leads to several percent error in the corrections to be made . Use of factual geometries substantially reduces this error .

A Fortran IV computer program entitled WAVE, which employs an explicit finite difference scheme for solving the one-dimensional wave equation for a time-dependent inelastic rock has been developed. The viscoelastic properties of the rock are represented in terms of a generalized Voigt model. The theory on which the computer program is based is rederived and a short description of the program is given. The computer program input instructions, a listing of the computer program, and example problems with required input and subsequent printed output are presented in appendixes. In the example problems) calculated results are free of spurious oscillations which occur in certain other methods of numerical calculation) notably the extended Ritz method.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling near the village of Tennyson in Grant County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the war program.The area for special investigation was selected on the basis of favorable structural disclosures, evidence of widespread zinc mineralization, absence of any great amount of exploration to depth beneath the productive shallow workings, and the favorable results of several churn-drill holes in the village of Tennyson.During the Bureau's investigation, 30 churn-drill holes aggregating5,888 feet were completed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to-the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Umber and sienna, like ocher, are naturally occurring mineral pig- ments composed largely of clay permeated with hydrated iron (ferric oxide), but they differ from ocher in that they also contain hydrated manganese oxide. The presence of manganese accounts for their browner color. In addition to silica and alumina (clay) and the coloring oxides of iron and manganese, these pigments often contain lime, barium, and other metallic salts as impurities. Sienna most nearly approaches ocher in chemical composition, and the chief distinction is its physical character. It grades into ocher with de- creasing iron content and into umber with increasing manganese content. Sienna is translucent rather than opaque and is more of a stain than a pigment; as the iron oxide content is rather high (often 60 to 80 per cent), the color is strong and rich and varies from pure brown to reddish brown. This pigment raw sienna, terra di Siena, and Italian earth. is known under several names: Burnt sienna is a pigment of an orange-brown tint made by cautionsly calcining raw sienna. It is divided into two grades; American, and Italian burnt sienna. American burnt sienna is a reddish-brown pigment containing from 25 to 60 per cent iron oxide (Fe2O3). One grade, found in Pennsylvania, analyses as high as 80 per cent and is mown as double strength sienna. Italian burnt sienna is a pigment generally containing more iron than the American product, averaging 60 to 75 per cent iron oxide.3 American pig- ments of the same iron content differ materially in shade, having a Havana- brown color, whereas the Italian is more of a maroon. Italian siennas when tinted with 20 per cent of white, show a bluish tint, whereas American siennas yield a brownish or yellowish hue. Raw umber, also known as Turkey umber, Levant umber, and terra ombra, is a greenish to yellowish brown siliceous and ferruginous earth, containing a considerable proportion of one or other of the higher oxides of manganese, Mng04 and MnO2." It is similar in many respects to raw sienna except that it is much coarser and contains more manganese oxide. All umbers contain over 5 per cent of manganese dioxide. Like sienna, umber is a permanent pigment, not being injured by light or by impure atmospheres. Burnt umber (velvet brown, chestnut brown, etc.), results from the calcination of raw umber. The color is much richer and warmer than that of the raw umber. The colors are equally permanent and can be used in conjunc- tion with all other durable pigments.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke; (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in this county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Perry County, Ky.

In continuation of the study of thermodynamic properties of the common interoxidic compounds of ferroalloy elements, this report gives the results of low-termperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium. Previous reports4 5/ of this laboratory dealt with low-temperature heat capacities, entropies, and heats of formation of the sodium vanadates. Heat-capacity measurements of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium (Na2W04, MgW04, and CaW04) were conducted throughout the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The entropies at 298° K. were evaluated and then combined with entropy data for the elements and oxides to obtain entropies of formation. This information is an essential part of the data needed for thermodynamic appraisals of chemical reactions of these substances. No similar data for any tungstate are to be found in the literature.

In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. The solubility characteristics of mono calcium aluminate (CaO A₁₂ 0 ) in water and in NaOH , Na₂ CO₂ , and NaOH - Na₂ CO₂ solutions were measured by determining the changes in Al2O3 concentrations in solution over a period of time at a specified temperature . The monocalcium aluminate was synthesized by sintering its starting components for 72 hours at 1,375 ° C. Distilled water and aqueous solutions of technical grades of NaOH and Na₂ CO₂ were used as solvents . The extraction of alumina from the monocalcium aluminate was dependent on the composition of the solvent and partially dependent on temperature for leaching . About 98 percent extraction of alumina from the aluminate occurred in Na₂ CO3 solutions containing 10 to 12 percent NaOH . Other solution compositions produce lesser extractions .

This paper presents data on the limiting (minimum) oxygen concentration (LOC), in the presence of added N2, of methane (CH4), propane (C3H8), ethylene (C2H4), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen (H2), and some of their binary mixtures. It also addresses the issue of the flammable concentration (flammability) limits of these pure gases in air. The study is based on spark ignited explosions in large, spherical laboratory vessels (120-L and 20-L) using a 7% pressure-rise criterion for explosion propagation. The results of the study are compared with the older values which used long flammability tubes with a diameter >5 cm together with visual evidence of substantial upward propagation. They are also compared to results reported recently using a 12-L spherical flask with a visual flame propagation criterion. Finally, they are compared to results reported in Europe using more modest flammability criteria and smaller chambers. The findings reported here show excellent agreement between the 120-L and 12-L results, good agreement with the 20-L results, and reasonable agreement with the earlier flammability tube values for the lower flammability limits. They disagree, however, with the more conservative European values. These results and those from the 12-L experiments also feature lower LOCs than are given by traditional flammability tubes. A model for the LOCs of such fuel mixtures based on the Le Chatelier mixture rule for lower flammable limits is seen to reasonably fit the observed results on binary mixtures and can accommodate more complex mixtures as well. One such set of ternary mixtures containing CH4 and 1:1 CO:H2 is well fitted by the model.
