Thermodynamic calculations indicate that an electrochemical cell might serve as an analytical device for determining the composition of high-purity metals. An equation, readily derived, for the cell voltage, E, is as follows: [E I RT In F NFe unknown sample T of L NFe standard] The cell, however, must come to equilibrium, must be reversible, and must have no thermal effects or complicating side reactions whose magnitude is indeterminable. This Bureau of Mines investigation explores the feasibility of an electrochemical technique for the analysis of high-purity iron. Experiments were conducted using room-temperature aqueous cells and high-temperature molten salt cells. The room-temperature cells proved to be irreversible. The high-temperature cells utilizing FeCl2 and a eutectic mixture of KC1-LiCl were reversible, but did not attain a constant voltage necessary for analytical considerations.

This is one of a. series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing raining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in man; instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that the scope of the cost tabulations shall not be misunderstood. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Avon Mountain trap-rock quarry of the Atlas Sand, Gravel & Stone Co., in West Hartford, Conn.

This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

A mineral survey by Bureau of Mines personnel identified no mineral resources or mineral occurrences with development potential at prospects in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Bentonite occurrences are in Skeleton Canyon and Surprise Canyon. Sand and gravel occurrences are numerous in and near the WSA. Much of the Mecca Hills WSA was leased for oil and gas exploration in 1983. No current mining claims or other leases were found in the study area. The Skeleton Canyon Clay Mine yielded clay to seal irrigation canals, Clay to seal ponds was also mined from the Red Top Clay Mine west of the USA. A sand and gravel pit south of the study area (near Box Canyon Wash) supplied material for local construction projects. A commercial sand and gravel pit was operating in 1983 near the mouth of Thermal Canyon 4 miles west of the WSA.

"Properties and Uses.Iceland spar is a name given to a pure crystallized form of calcite (CaCo3) which is sufficiently transparent and free of defects to be used in the manufacture of optical instruments. While the actual requirements are small, the degree of purity and physical perfection demanded renders it somewhat difficult to obtain suitable material.The properties of value in Iceland spar are its transparency combined with double refraction. It is used in the manufacture of polarizing microscopes, saccharimeters, colorimeters and photometers. Its most important use is in the manufacture of Nicol prisms, which constitute an essential part of every polarizing microscope. The principle governing the construction of the Nicol prism is as follows:Ordinary light in passing through a crystal of calcite is resolved into two rays of plane polarized light vibrating in planes at right angles to each other and having different indices of refraction. Thus the two rays follow different paths through the crystal. The prism of Iceland spar is cut diagonally and cemented together again with a transparent cement having an index of refraction intermediate between the two rays passing through the prism. Canada balsam is employed for this purpose. The prism is cut at such an angle that the ray having the greatest index of refraction meets the surface of the balsam at an angle greater than the angle of total reflection, and it is thus deflected to the side of the prism, while the second ray passes through. Thus one of the rays is eliminated and polarized light vibrating in a single plane is obtained."

1.1 General The examination and evaluation of a mineral deposit to determine whether or not it can be profitably exploited entails many factors unrelated to the physical nature and intrinsic worth of that deposit. Nevertheless, geology and geologically related factors have great bearing on the economic potential of the deposit. This is only natural because the deposit owes its existence to these factors. This is even more so in underground mines where the whole system is a geologically enclosed one. Geology plays a major role in at least four phases of a mineral venture. Firstly, it acts as an indicator of the existence of parti¬cular minerals. For example, it is inconceivable that a sedimentary coal deposit would exist in a granitic batholith or stock, or that a sandstone would host primary copper or nickel sulphides. Further, the positional relationship of different rock types may be significant in locating deposits such as replacement zinc and copper sulphides in limestones which have been intruded by igneous rocks. Thus, geology is important in the exploration phase of a mineral deposit. Secondly, once potentially valuable minerals have been discovered, knowledge of geology plays a significant role in determining the dis¬tribution, grade and extent of the mineralization. The wettability of petroleum reservoir materials by water and crude oil has been recognized as an important factor in determining waterflood behavior. The problem of simulating and studying reservoir conditions and characteristics, to produce laboratory results congruous with field experience, has been examined by many methods. (1, 2, 3, 4).4/ The most generally accepted approach to this problem is determining wettability of the porous medium by imbibition methods; or, after solvent extraction, predetermining the wettability of the samples by coating the surface of the medium to render it preferentially oil-or water-wet (3, 5). The emphasis of wettability studies has been placed on the characteristics of the reservoir materials with little consideration being given to the fluids themselves. Therefore, the wetting tendencies of crude oils have been investigated by a recently developed method (6). Imbibition and the more general phenomena of capillary pressure are the most direct ways to measure wettability. The simplest type of capillary pressure observations involves the use of an interfacial-tension capillarimeter, which does not produce as separate values either interfacial tension or contact angle. Actually, these quantities do not have independent significance in reservoir engineering, and the property of wettability they are intended to evaluate is given, immediately by capillarimetric measurements.

[The purpose of this paper is to acquaint manufacturers of various types of asbestos product's, particularly those that specialize in materials used for sound deadening, vibration damping, and filtration, with a recently invested depth deposit of paligorskite, a type of asbestos usually called mountain leather. In the past this mineral has been only a museum curiosity but it possesses characteristics that may adapt it to industrial uses. The deposit is on Lemesurier Island, near this entrance to Glacier Bay, in the northern portion of southeastern Alaska, at approximately latitude 58° 17? N., longitude 1360 05' W. The island is about 4 ½ miles in east- west length and miles in width. The property on which the deposit occurs is owned by the locator Joe Ibach, end it was brought; to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Col. George B. Norris. A Bureau of Mines engineer, accompanied by the owner and Chris Ellingen, visited the property sand examined the open-cuts from May 7 to 10 in 1944. The purpose of the examination was to determine the approximate extent of the occurrence and to obtain samples of the material for identification end study of its utilization.]

This report describes the development of a dynamic strain gage and a companion amplifier and recording camera -an apparatus designed to pick up and record the strain waves produced in rock by a nearby explosion. Also included in the report is a discussion of the relationships connecting the strain with the displacement, velocity, and acceleration for both plane and spherical waves. The proposed tests for which the strain gages were intended required making measurements in solid rock, a factor that necessitated the development of a gage that could be inserted and anchored in a small-diameter diamond-drill hole. The restriction on the diameter of the drill hole is required so that the presence of the hole in the medium will not influence the propagation of the strain wave. The gage should respond with fidelity to the frequencies present in a wave pulse generated by the nearby detonation of a small quantity of high-velocity explosive. Preliminary tests showed that this frequency range extends from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s. or greater. Also, the gage should be capable of measuring strains ranging from a few micro-inches per inch to several thousand micro-inches per inch. Other desirable design specifications included a low gage output impedance to permit the use of long cables, and a low gage cost, particularly in view of the fact that for the final design none of the gages can be recovered from the medium.

This report describes the procedures used by the Bureau of Mines for obtaining attitudes of joints surveyed with a borescope in inclined boreholes. An algorithm for computing the dips and azimuths of the observed joints is presented. The algorithm is used to solve an example problem. A computer program based on the algorithm is listed. It is hoped that the procedures described here will be useful in treating large quantities of data obtained from comprehensive borehole surveys.

A new mining law for the Recublic of Polend was promulgated by presiden- tial decree dated November 29, 1930, published in the Journal of Lews (Dzienni stex) No. E, text 654, December E, 1530, and wes to become effective January 1, 1932, in all Polend except Silesie. Its adoption in Silesia wes dependent pon the action of the Silesian Diet. As the new law is considered an im- provement over the old Austrian Mining Lew, which is operative in the Silesian districts of Bielsk and Cieszyn, and the Prussian Kining Law, which is opera- tive in Upper Silesia, no delay in its adoption for Silesin was looked for. This new law codifies the various juridical regulations pertaining to ines existing in different parts of the Polish Republic but does not include legislation with respect to the extraction of minerel oil, especially crude oil. Petroleum legislation was postponed to a later date in order to facili- tate codification in other fields. Koreover, as the oil industry exists in Galicia elone, deley will not be detrimental.

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. Noncaking 0- by 2 -inch subbituminous coal from New Mexico was gasified with air and steam at 205 prig using a stirred-bed producer to determine coal losses by entrainment in the gas for this low-sulfur, high-ash coal which contained 20 percent particles smaller than 1/16-inch sieve size. The use of fine-sized coal has particular importance because most production from mechanized mines is smaller than 2-inch size. This initial attempt showed technical feasibility for gasifying New Mexico subbituminous coal containing small-sized particles in fixed-bed producers without excessive coal loss by entrainment. Dust loss averaged about 2 percent of moisture-free coal, most of which was recovered from the gas. Ash clinkering was controlled by adding 1,010 lb/hr steam to reduce tempera¬tures in the combustion zone. Yield of low-Btu fuel gas, 150 Btu per scf, dry, amounted to 69,800 scfh from 1,490 lb/hr coal (as received) and 3,450 lb/hr air (dry).

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes some recent results on the sensitivity of various experimental explosive systems using ammonium nitrate (AN) as the oxidizing agent. The sensitivity survey included drop-weight and friction testing and sensitivity to initiation by projectile impact and a No.8 blasting cap. It was found that certain types of AN prills can result in cap-sensitive mixtures when combined with No.2 diesel fuel (Fa); prilled AN mixed with nitromethane also result in cap-sensitive mixtures. Mixtures of AN prills and neat 1-and 2-nitropropane were not cap-sensitive, and the use of powdered or grained aluminum in AN-FO did not adversely affect the sensitivity except possibly to increase its sensitivity to friction.

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)

Magnesia spinel (MgO.Al203) recovered from dusting slags in the system MgO.Al203-2Ca0.SiO2 is in the form of single crystals most of which will pass 35-mash. This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the concentrates as a refractory raw material. Three specific types of refractory bricks were studied: (1) dense, (2) lightweight bubble, and (3) insulating. Test specimens ware fabricated 1 by dry pressing, fired to 1,675° C., and tested by procedures common to the industry. The concentrates produced a refractor, having satisfactory density and mechanical strength; however, spinal is sensitive to thermal shock and the possibility of producing a spall-resistant brick using aggregate of such small grain-size must be considered remote. Lightweight refractorias fabricated of spinel bubbles were the most promising of the types tested. They were 30 percent lighter in sight than the dense refractory, their mechanical strength was good, and definite superiority in thermal shock resistance was indicated.

A portable, handheld infrared scanner has been used to detect abnormal surface temperature on dumps of flood-generated trash near Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Three of eight dumps examined had thermal anomalies on the surface, indicating temperature buildup at depth. The anomalies found with the scanner were verified by measurements with a thermocouple probe or a carbon monoxide detector. One week after the investigation was completed, open fire broke out at the site of one of these thermal anomalies; about 6 weeks after the investigation, a thermal anomaly in another dump was verified when a trench was excavated in the dump.
