These properties were examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in 1949. During 1950, these mines were studied by the Bureau to determine the possibility of increasing the production and augmenting the supply of fluorspar. As a result of this study, it was decided to core-drill the Knox-Yingling vein to test the continuation of fluorspar to a greater depth than that reached by mine workings. It also was desired to relate the present deposit with the Rosiclare formation. Development work by the Bureau of Mines was performed from February to May inclusive in 1951. Four diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,733 feet were drilled in the hanging wall of the vein.

In 1947 the Bureau of Mines, as an accident-prevention measure, decided to advocate the adoption of roof bolting (suspension roof supports) in coal mines where it appeared to be applicable. Subsequent experience has disclosed that the applicability of this support is more general than was first suspected; moreover, comparison of the accident records of mines before and after adoption of the roof-bolting method shows results that more than justify the effort and funds expended. The industry has responded enthusiastically, because roof bolting proved to be not only an accident-prevention measure but also one to increase productive efficiency. In some instances this increase in the productivity of men and machines has been almost incredible and has led many mining men to conclude that through some hocus-pocus they can now cast aside many or all of the time-proven rule of good mining practice. If this tendency is not counteracted, it could easily result in an increase of roof-fall accidents, which may outweigh the benefits of roof bolting and discredit an innovation in roof control that shows great promise of materially reducing our mining accidents. From an economic standpoint it may represent the margin between profit and loss in many mining operations. The purpose of this manuscript is not to propose an inflexible code or set of rules but to summarize the experience to date as a guide for those who have the responsibility for the installation and inspection of roof bolts. This experience consists of approximately 250 investigations of roof failure in which roof bolting was involved either directly or indirectly. It should be pointed out that many of these failures were controlled, occurring during experimental periods, and comparatively few of the accidental failures actually resulted in personal injury, yet a significant number represented potential hazards.

The Bureau of Mines recently tested a sideboard device that is designed to act as an extension of conventional brattice, thus improving face ventilation of developing room-and-pillar-type coal mining. In these laboratory tests, an 8-foot-long rigid sideboard was mounted vertically along the left fender of a full-scale-model ripper-type continuous mining machine, rising to the mine roof to provide an air seal. It extended from the auger support frame pivot point outby along the fender. A novel water spray manifold was used to form an air seal between the sideboard and brattice. Tests showed improvement in face ventilation with the prototype device, and also demonstrated that water sprays can form an effective air seal over a fairly wide pressure range. Based on this preliminary study, subsequent improvements may make the sideboard concept much more effective, thus affording a simple, inexpensive technique to improve the effectiveness of face ventilation.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype nonincendive explosive rock-breaker charge that can be fired unconfined in underground bituminous coal mines without the danger of igniting a flammable atmosphere that might be present. At present, unconfined shooting in underground coal mines is prohibited, but there are situations where the use of such shots would yield an overall improvement in safety. The charge consists of 1-1/2 lb of permissible water gel explosive in the form of a short cylinder 7 inches in diameter and 7/8 inches high, surrounded by a 1 1/2-inch-thick layer of damp salt, and encased in latex rubber reinforced with cheese cloth. The latex rubber housing provides a charge package that is strong enough to resist rough handling yet is pliable enough to conform to an irregular stone surface. A charge of this shape was found to be more effective at breaking rock than charges with lined or unlined cavities. Incendivity tests in a gallery have shown that the prototype charge will not ignite a flammable methane-air atmosphere when fired. Rock- breaking tests made with limestone boulders indicate that the charge will satisfactorily break stone slabs weighing 1 to 2 tons, and that two or more charges might be effective for slabs weighing up to 10 tons. In cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), a test protocol for the certification of these charges as "permissible" for use in flammable atmospheres is being developed.

In estimating the hazardous qualities of a dusty atmosphere it is frequently desirable to determine the composition of the air-borne dust. Samples collected from ledges or from the rock itself are Likely to be unsatisfactory for this purpose owing to the possibilities of differential disintegration of the rock and of variations in settling rates of the different components of the minerals. It may be necessary, therefore, to collect samples of dust from the air. Samples collected from the air may be analyzed chemically, by X-ray diffraction, and by the petrographic microscope. Chemical methods are unsatisfactory owing to the small samples usually available and to the limitations and complexities of: present methods. X-ray technique requires expensive apparatus not ordinarily available except in research laboratories. Owing to the simplicity and rapidity of petrographic is examination of atmospheric mineral dusts, it was considered worthy of further study.

Thin sections of coal have been prepared for many years either by cutting on a microtome (1,2)5 or by grinding and polishing (2,1). Specimens of most coals had to be demineralized in hydrofluoric acid and softened in caustic solutions before they could be successfully cut with a conventional microtome. Some lignites could be cut without pretreatment. Jeffrey (1) obtained sections from coals of all ranks, although long and tedious pretreatment was required for anthracite. His sections were less than 1 cm.2 in area (probably much less for high rank coals) and about 5 microns thick. Thiessen (2) also cut sections of softened coals, mostly of low rank. His sections were a few square millimeters in area and about 3 microns thick. However, Thiessen preferred ground and polished sections for detailed studies because they were larger and had not been chemically attacked by softening media. He prepared ground sections as large as 4 cm.2 in area and usually 5 to 10 microns thick. Thousands of such sections, covering complete column samples of many coal beds, were studied for a number of years (4). With the development of the electron microscope and increased interest in quantitative optical studies of coals, a need for much thinner sections arose. However, no suitable technique for preparing such sections was known until Fernández-Morán developed a diamond knife for cutting ultrathin sections of hard materials (5). Workers at the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches de Charbonnages de France applied this new tool to the cutting of coal sections and have recently described their technique to the Burg, of Mines. Beside many other damaging effects of acid mine drainage, corrosion of pipe lines and pumps frequently adds much to mine operating, costs. Not only is it often necessary to install special and relatively costly acid-resistant materials, but even these may require frequent replacements. It is not unusual for ordinary steel pipe to last only a few days in some highly acid waters, while other common materials, though more resistant, frequently cast only a few weeks. In the spring of 1935, local PWA authorities offered to assign a number of persons to various problems under the direction of regular employees of the Bureau of Mines. It was believed that at least some simple tests on as many different kinds of acid-resistant pipes as could readily be obtained might produce interesting; and valuable information for the mining industry. This paper describes the tests and some results that have since been noted.

This preliminary paper is intended to answer briefly some of the inquiries coning to the Bureau of Mines regarding the so-called "paraffining", of oil wells and methods of preventing and remedying that trouble. The increased difficulties in operation and the losses of production caused by the deposition of gummy and waxy hydrocarbons, commonly called paraffin, in the wells, tubing, other pumping equipment, and in the pores of the productive sands, have long been recognized but the trouble has not been overcome. The nature and causes of the trouble, together with some of the possible methods by which it may be diminished or overcome, are outlined below. Character of the Peraffining Materials. The so-called paraffin that collects in oil wells end in the pores of the oil-producing sands immediately around the wells, is generally made up of amorphous wax or uncracked paraffin, asphalt, or other gummy hydrocarbons mixed with more or lees water, oil, and inorganic silt. Some of the samples of this "paraffin" collected from oil wells in different fields and examined by the Bureau of Mines contain as mach as 20 per cent by weight of water and inorganic silt, whereas other samples are composed entirely of waxy hydrocarbons and oil. The inorganic silt accompanying this "paraffin" is mostly fine sand, clayey materials, common salt and finely disseminated precipitates of calcium and magnesium carbonates. Sulphates of calcium, barium, and strontium are less common constituents of the "paraffin."

This final report documents the work done by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC) , on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971) . Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of in- dependent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "seismic Detection and, Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume.

"Mineralogical Composition of Cyanite RockIn the group of minerals used in making this study, the cyanite is associated with quartz, mica, and feldspar in the schist. The amount of quartz is variable, but it is always an abundant mineral. Both large and small crystals of quartz occur in irregular masses, rarely ever showing crystal outline. Mica is of the clear and dark varieties the larger crystals being dark as a rule, and the finer crystals of light color, The present mineralogical composition of the mica is rather variable as most of the original biotite and muscovite have suffered alteration, and much secondary mica is present as a result of alteration of the original mica and other minerals present, especially the larger cyanite crystals. A large part of the mica now found in the ore is chlorite, with varying amounts of Jefferisite and others, especially sericite. These are in the form of aggregates, or felt-like intergrowths filling the spaces between the quartz, cyanile, and feldspar.The feldspar is plagioclase probably mostly albite. It is white, possesses good cleavage, and is one of the hard brittle minerals of the rock. It alters to kaolin, and sericite, and more or less of these alteration minerals are present within the feldspar crystals but not separated from them.The cyanite is of two varieties, distinguished by their colors as blue and white cyanite. The blue color varies in intensity, being a pronounced blue in some crystals and paler in shade in others. Some crystals have been seen which possess the blue color in one-half of their mass and are pure white or clear in the other half. The purity of the cyanite is probably not affected by the color, but it is difficult to detect the white cyanite in the ore by macroscopic examination, so that great care has to be exercised in the selection of the ore in the field."

No mineral resources were delineated during our investigation of the Antelope Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Only a few claims have been located in the area and only four workings were found. There has been, however, considerable exploration and mining activity in and near the south end of the study area. The Morey mining district, just southeast of the WSA, produced silver, and lesser amounts of gold and lead, sporadically from the mid-1860's through the mid-1960's. Long Lac Mineral Exploration (Texas), Inc. is actively exploring a large block of claims for hot-spring type, low-grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. Their claim block extends into the study area. The WSA, located midway between Tonopah and Eureka, encompasses approximately 87,400 acres. It is underlain by Tertiary rhyolitic and latitic volcanic rocks and by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. At least three areas in the Paleozoic rocks have many of the favorable criterion for hot-spring type gold deposits; they have been faulted, silicified, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered, and have anomalous concentrations of precious metals and pathfinder elements. With additional exploration in the south part of the Antelope WSA, gold resources may be discovered.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry increased substantially in 1962, compared with the 1961 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. The steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize for the third year; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 2 previous years; and the tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. The percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1962-422 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 403 million tons produced in 1961. Production was greater in 1962, owing largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities and to more exports.

As with many new technologies, the rapid growth in solution mining for uranium has created uncertainties regarding the environmental impact of mining operations. In solution mining, the largest area of concern is the impact of the process on the quality of ground water supplies. As a result, a rapid and reliable technique of detecting lixiviant excursions is desirable. Such a method would replace the periodic sampling technique and should provide a more or less continuous monitoring method. To this end, resistivity techniques were evaluated as an alternate means of tracking lixiviant movement. A program was devised which had five specific tasks. These were: (1) evaluation of the techniques, (2) development of the most promising technique or techniques, (3) field testing of the techniques, (4) testing of the BuMines probe, and (5) reporting. The result of the analytical and field work is that various resistivity/ resistance techniques do provide a means of detecting lixiviant movement in Northern Wyoming. Surface and downhole galvanic surveys and controlled source audio magnetotellurics (AMT) were evaluated. All three techniques showed some degree of success.

As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for a longwall mining operation in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative face positions are tabulated for 110 subsidence monuments. Measurements were taken twelve times during the eight months it took to mine the panel. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining site are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following; questions are arising n the minds of coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when storing coal? In regard to the loss of heating value of coal in storage, tests made by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh Gas, and Sheridan Wyoming coals.
