During calendar year 1972, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in some 20 major areas of research for the development of new and improved efficient methods of conservation and utilization for petroleum and natural gas, oil shale, and coal. Made up of numerous projects described in this report, the program was carried out through research performed at research centers and laboratories in the field supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Based un this research, 186 technical reports were published by the Bureau or others, and numerous other reports were prepared for Federal agencies, State agencies, and organizations engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

We present an analysis of the propagation in a uniform tunnel of semi -circular cross section that contains two axial conductors. In particular, we show that, even if one of these conductors has high ohmic loss, one of the two propagating modes has relatively low attenuation. This corresponds to the situation where an unloaded dedicated wire is used to improve radio frequency communication in a mine tunnel that contains a heavily loaded trolley wire.

The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division. Earlier work on this subject includes a study of the general practice of coal preparation in Illinois, made in 1914 and published in 1916/ and an investigation of Illinois coal-w.ashing methods, results of which were published in 1912 in a bulletin 2 that contained complete information on the methods then in use for sizing washed coa 1.

Argentina follows Venezuela and Mexico as the largest producers of crude petroleum and natural gas in Latin America. Argentina 1S practically self-sufficient in fuels, but relies substantially on imports for its supply of copper, iron ore, ferroalloys, sulfur, and fertilizers. Mining activity is limited and is in an incipient stage of growth, considering the country's potential for mining. Most nonfuel mineral output in 1979 consisted primarily of minerals used for construction, while only 9% are other nonmetallic, and 2% are metallic minerals. Argentina is Latin America's major producer of boron minerals and uranium (yellow cake). Mineral exports consist primarily of borates, uranium concentrates, and of late, some tin. These exports have in the past been shipped mostly to Great Britain. London banks have been involved in arranging financing for St. Joe Minerals Corp. IS planned development of the El Pachon copper deposit (see map), and were being counted upon to also back the development of large copper and manganese projects. The following is a review of Argentine mineral production in 1979: (For 1981, the production of boron minerals is put at 167,000 metric tons and uranium at 300,000 metric tons.)

What troubles me so often about debates over the environment, which I have heard since I entered government in the late 1960's, is that the issues are so often presented as a false dilemma--the either-or fallacy in logic. The either-or fallacy allows only two possible choices: Either protect the environment or exploit it. In reality, however, there may be a few more options. The diverse, often competing, values that the Earth offers require us to weigh and balance those options through a range of policy options. A quality environment and economic growth and opportunity are not mutually exclusive. First, let me acknowledge that I support a set of resource values recognized in U.S. laws and deemed important down through history for the success of free, progressive, and secure societies: the importance of access to raw materials. Increasingly, however, mineral raw materials have been viewed at best as not particularly relevant to a sophisticated, technologic society, and at worst monstrously destructive of our natural environment. Both perceptions, in my judgment, are wrong.

"The number of persons fatally injured in the petroleum industry in California in 1930 was 50, a decrease of 20.6 per cent from 1929, when 63 men accidentally lost their lives. The decrease in the number of fatalities for 1930 has caused the first downward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1927 and is coincident with a period of little active development in new fields, the shutting in of many wells, and reduced activity in the older fields of the State. That a direct relationship exists between the number of accidental deaths and the rapidity of new field development is particularly emphasized by the fact that in 1929, a year of intensive field development in California, 48 men were killed in the drilling and producing division, whereas in 1930, a year of less development work, only 25 men were killed in this division,The figures for the average number of drilling and producing wells in 1930 decreased appreciably from comparable figures for 1929 and a greater percentage of producing wells were shut—in in 1930 than in 1929."

"Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

The NIOSH suite of coal mine ground control software addresses nearly every aspect of coal mine ground control planning, including geologic characterization, mine layout, pillar design, and support selection. Mine planners who use the soft-ware have access to the knowledge gained during years of NIOSH research—packaged in a simple, easy-to-use format. Several of these software packages have recently been updated and improved. Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) (Figure 1) helps select the proper roof bolt system design from the immense variety of available bolt types and patterns. It was developed from statistical analysis of extensive bolt performance and roof fall data. New features in Version 2 include— • The capability to analyze roof bolt systems that use two types of bolts; and • A roof support cost module that estimates the total in-stalled cost of different patterns, considering the costs of consumables, labor, maintenance, and other factors. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) (Figure 2) can be used to make judgments regarding which secondary support system will be the most effective in a particular mine condition and to evaluate the advantages or dis-advantages of alternative support systems. Version 3.0 includes additional improvements: • Supports with large load-shedding following yielding can be designed based on the peak loading capability as well as the residual loading capability; • Seven new support systems have been added to the program; and • Easier access to photo gallery has been provided. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) replaces com-plicated geologic information with a simple numerical rating that mine planners can use in many ground control applications. The CMRR can be readily integrated into a geologic exploration program, and the software package is capable of generating an AutoCAD CMRR "layer." Version 1.2 contains— • The complete CMRR database with more than 250 ratings obtained from 70 different U.S. coal seams; and • An all-new "Help" file that clearly explains all aspects of the program. Analysis of Horizontal Stress in Mining (AHSM) can help find the optimum mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. It can be used to analyze both development and longwall retreat designs, and it shows how the stress condition varies as the entry, crosscut, and panel orientations are changed. Version 2 features— • Improved graphics that enable the user to observe the effect of design changes without adjusting the display on the computer screen; and • Resource files containing information on stress map-ping, advance-and-relieve mining, stress measurements in U.S. coal mines, and other topics. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded? a contract to Foster-Miller, Inc. to develop guidelines for designing, constructing, stocking, and maintaining rescue chambers in underground mines. This report develops information and recommendations which could be used by a mine operator who desired to install a rescue chamber. Volume I covers the following major areas: atmospheric life support, configuration and construction, chamber location, power and lighting, equipment and supplies, communications, and psychological aspects and training. Volume II contains the following appendices: History of Barricading, Chamber Pressuriztion Considerations, Diffusional Infiltration of Gas, Compressed Air Storage, Location Examples, and Psychological Aspects.

No noticeable international economic recovery occurred during the first half of 1982. Industrial production continued to fall in the United States, Canada and Italy and to hold steady in France. Modest increases in production occurred in Japan, England and Germany, although some decline took place from March to April. The U.S. mining industry has been more severely affected by the world recession than the U.S. economy. This is not immediately obvious when comparing the U.S. mining industrial production index from 1981 to 1982, which decreased 8.5 percent, as compared to a 7.1 percent decline for total domestic industries. However, "mining" industry statistics in the U.S. national economic accounting system include petroleum and natural gas as well as minerals. When metal mining is isolated, the decrease in production from 1981 to 1982 is 19.3 percent. If metal mining production continues to perform at the same rate during the third and fourth quarters of 1982 as during the first half of the year, declines from 1981 levels will be quite severe. Aluminum will have declined 22 percent, copper 18 percent, iron ore 24 percent, lead 3 percent, steel 29 percent, titanium 2 percent and zinc 25 percent.

With the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Government as a climax to the capitulation of the German High Command , the main objective of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division pivoted from war assignments to its main normal functions . One of these functions is to give wide public distribution to valuable technical facts which the Division has obtained through research on petroleum , natural gas , helium , and related subjects . During the war years many engineering data and scientific facts could be released only on a restricted basis as reports to war agencies and others immediately concerned . Moreover , many of the wartime reports contained masses of detailed data that were prepared under stress to meet emergency schedules . For peacetime publication and application , these data must be reviewed , correlated , and rearranged so as to present the essentials in proper form . To illustrate , a wartime report of 50 pages might be resolved into one curve in a composite graph for a peacetime publication . Another factor affecting the orientation of the work of the Division is the broader horizon of research revealed by its war activities . Fundamental research and careful engineering analyses are just as important in time of peace as in time of war; in fact , they should be more important to the forward view , because under peace conditions disrupting influences that distract from the orderly acquisition of knowledge are minimized . Therefore , the concerted effort has been not to " salvage " the results of the war activities , but to evaluate them on the basis of their relative importance in the future economy of the country . Where wartime investigations have pointed to peacetime accomplishments , the effort has been to give the corresponding type of work additional emphasis . This adjustment can not be made hurriedly , but many of the necessary preliminary steps on the new course have been taken ..

A program to investigate the effects of hardened washers on the uniformity of roof bolt tension and the resulting ground control in an underground mine was carried out. The complete roof bolt installation and roof bolt loads, mine convergence, and bed separation were monitored for a period of five months. The results show no evidence to support or refute the theory that mechanical roof bolts offer better support when they are installed with a high uniformity of tension. Also shown is the fact that if the bolts are installed with a maximum deviation from the mean torque of ±15% the addition of hardened washers significantly improved the uniformity of the installed tensions in the roof bolts.

Although it may be impracticable to adopt standard methods of safe working in all branches of mining, and although it may be impossible to establish a standard for each class of work at each mine, some of the iron-mining companies in the Lake Superior district have found that by adopting certain standard ways of performing certain of their operations they insure both more efficient and safer working conditions. Many companies have adopted the idea that the safe way of doing things is also the most efficient and economical way, and, through the medium of their safety conferences they are trying to find the safest way, and the most efficient way, of performing practically every operation about the mines. This activity will, undoubtedly, be continued at every operation which uses this method of doing safety work, because in the advance of industry changes must be made in the results required from time to time. A review of the safety standards and safety suggestions which have been arrived at by some of the companies in this the greatest iron-mining district in the world, will be of value to companies who are interested in improving the safety of their working conditions. So that attention may be directed to the methods in use, rather than to individual companies, all names have been omitted and companies are referred to only by letter.

The use of explosives to fragment rock generates ground vibrations which may have a detrimental effect on contiguous underground coal mine openings. Increased surface blasting by a burgeoning number of surface coal mines and quarries has caused considerable concern among underground mine operators. Ground vibration effects generated from surface mine blasting are also causing public concern. In response to this concern, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Stagg and Engler, 1980) has measured and analyzed ground vibrations and their effects on underground and surface structures. Some of the complaints registered against the mining industry are claims of substantial material damage from vibrations generated by the blasting; others are nuisance complaints of minor damage or annoyance. In general, allegations of damage from surface blasting have been sufficiently numerous to constitute a major problem for mine operators engaged in blasting operations. They have recognized the need for more technological data to evaluate the vibration problems associated with blasting. Both the operators and the general public need adequate safeguards based upon factual data to protect their specific interests. The coal mine industry needs reliable information from which to change blasting operations to reduce the number and severity of major damage claims and eliminate the growing number of nuisance complaints. The problem is of major concern not only to coal mine operators and nearby property owners, but also to federal, state and local governments. At the same time, environmental control agencies responsible for blasting and explosives use require reasonable and appropriate guidelines to protect the miners' lives.

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The studies were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell, chief engineer, Petroleum and Natural-Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, Washington; D. C., and H. C. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Western Fuels Utah, Inc. entered into an agreement to plan, install, and evaluate a micro-computer based monitoring and control system at Deserado Mine, an underground coal mine. The U.S. Bureau of Hines contracted the Colorado School of Mines (CSN) to independently evaluate the project. CSM evaluated and documented costs, benefits, problems, and management and labor perceptions in this report. Recommendations are provided for mine operators and monitoring system vendors considering future installations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the State of Indiana cooperated with AMAX Coal Co. and its consultants to determine the effects of coal mine overburden blasting on nearby pipelines. Five pressurized 76-m pipeline sections were installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN, for testing to failure. Four 17-to 51-cm-diameter welded steel pipes and one 22-cm PVC pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the test pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale, close-in blasting for construction, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 950 kg per delay in 31-cm blastholes. Analyses found low pipe responses, strains, and calculated stresses from even large blasts. Ground vibrations of 120 to 250 mm/s produced worst case strains that were about 25 pct of the strains resulting from normal pipeline operations and calculated stresses of only about 10 to 18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No pressurization failures or permanent strains occurred even at vibration amplitudes of 600 mm/s.

"INTRODUCTION The injection of gas into the McClosky limestone in the adjoining, Griffin and New Harmony field in Indiana and Illinois and resulting increases in oil and gas production from this zone ore described in this report.Since 1911, the use of compressed air or as to increase oil production by supplementing natural reservoir energy has been widely adopted, and has resulted in the recovery of much additional oil, which otherwise would have been left underground. In many of the newer oil fields, including Griffin and New Harmony, a part of the compressed residue gas from natural gasoline plants is returned to the reservoir as a secondary method to increase oil and gasoline production. Part of the injected gas is stored underground for future use.By presenting data on many secondary recovery operations in a series of reports 5-9/ the Bureau of Mines has sought to stimulate interest in secondary recovery as a means of increasing oil recovery and current oil production for wartime needs. Most of the elder fields in the United States produce oil from sandstone reservoirs, and probably more than 90 percent of secondary recovery operations have been developed in oil bearing sandstones. During recent years, the volume of oil obtained by primary methods from limestone reservoirs has increased steadily, but as yet little has been done to recover, by secondary means,,the large volumes of oil left in limestone reservoirs when primary methods production are no longer profitable. Because of inherent differences in the origin and nature of the pore spaces between sandstones and limestones and because of differences in permeability and fluid content, secondary recovery methods, which are successful in sandstone-reservoirs, are not always applicable to limestones. Not much he been written concerning secondary recovery operations in limestone reservoirs, and few data are available to assist operators in developing such secondary recovery projects."

Selenium might be described as a paradoxical element, being either a metal or a nonmetal, a conductor or nonconductor, amorphous or crystalline, colorant or decolorant, and a hydrogenator or dehydrogenator. Selenium was discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist, Berzelius, while studying flue dust from the lead chambers of the sulfuric acid works at Gripsholm, Sweden, The ordinary stable form of selenium is a crystalline, grayish solid with semi-metallic luster. It melts at 217° C., boils at 684.8° C., and has a density of 4.79.

In 1917 the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Idaho arranged to cooperate in an investigation looking to the improvement of mining and milling methods in the mining districts of the State of Idaho, with an especial view to the wider development of the minerul deposits and greater efficiency in the treatment of the lowgrade ores of the State. This work has been made possible lnrgely through the generosity and active assistance of the mine operators, especially certain companies in the Coeur d'Alene region. As the first step in the work under the cooperative agreement it wa.s decided to gather all data possible on the various mining districts throughout the State, both active and abandoned, in order to ascertain their potential possibilities, especial attention being paid to methods of metallurgical treatment and to the solution of the many metallurgical problems in order to effect a greater commercinl saving. With this plan in view, field work was begun in the latter part of May, 1917, and was continued during the summer. E. K. Soper, formerly professor of mining, University of Idaho, and now dean of the mining department of Oregon Agricultural • College, Corvallis, Oreg., visited the mining districts in central and southwestern Idaho and also some of those in the northern part of the St.ate. D. C. Livingston, professor of geology at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, also visited some of the mining districts in central Idaho during the summer; in addition, much valuable information he had gathered on former trips to many other districts is included in this report. Credit is also due Mr. Livingston for the maps covering the State, as well as the bibliography nt the end of each chapter. Thomas Varley, superintendent of the Seattle mining experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, spent a short time in the field, principally in the mining districts in central and . northern Idaho, and made a brief visit to the southwestern districts with Mr Soper. The field work of Mr. C. A. Wright, metallurgical engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in direct charge of the cooperative work, was chiefly in the Coeur d'Alene region. Mr. Wright visited nearly all of the mining districts in the region and devoted most of his time to studying the milling methods. The results of the investigation are set 1iorth in this bulletin. The bulletin aims to give the l9Calities of the various mining districts, and the nature of the present operations and those that have been carried on in the past. The geology is discussed only in a general way, the descriptions being intended more especially to bring out the types of ore deposits and the character of the ores, a knowledge of which is essential in determining the proper treatment of the ores. The writers do not wish to imply that all districts mentioned in this bulletin were visited during the summer of 1917, for a great deal of the material has been gathered from other reports, especially from publications of the United States Geological Survey. However, it is hoped that this report will be of help to those who are interested in mining in the State of Idaho. The plan is to continue the field work and subsequently publish the results of the investigations in much more detail, with greater emphasis given the metallurgical treatment of the ores and the problems involved.
