Recently, coal fly ash has become a potential candidate as a secondary resource of rare earth elements (REE). In this investigation, we studied the recovery of REE from fly ash from a commercial power plant. The specific aim was to assess the technical feasibility of recovering REE from the coal fly ash using conventional preconcentration methods, including gravity separation, magnetic separation, and froth flotation. The experimental results revealed that flotation achieved major gains in REE recovery and upgrading. However, during gravity and wet magnetic separation tests, the bulk of REE reported to the tailings. The results showed significant variations in the performance of the various beneficiation methods investigated. This study has confirmed that existing physical separation methods could be used to recover REE from coal fly ash prior to hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processing, although some challenges persist.

"Plasma-assisted spheroidisation of metal powders offers several technical advantages with respect to both the ease of materials handling and powder-metallurgical item manufacturing. Advantages include improved flowability, increased powder packing density, elimination of internal component cavities and fractures, changes in morphology resulting in decreased friction between particles and contamination during pneumatic transport and enhanced particle purity. In this empirical study, spherical iron particles were produced using a microwave plasma operating at atmospheric pressure and characterized using optical microscopy and SEM techniques. Iron powders were fed into the system at fixed operating conditions, resulting in particles with spherical structures. The theoretical estimate of the time required for melting to occur is 1.6 ms, an order of magnitude smaller than the actual residence time. IntroductionParticle design and functionalization has become an increasingly popular aspect of materials synthesis and powder-metallurgical item manufacturing. One such technique involves the spheroidisation and densification of feed materials, typically in the form of chemical powders with wide particle size distributions. The major benefits of powder spheroidisation include improved powder flowability, increased powder packing density and powder purity, reductions in internal voids and defects, as well as the ability to manipulate the particles surface morphologies (Boulos, 2004). Thermal plasma processing has the potential for scale-up and for producing industrial quantities of spheroidised powder.Thermal plasma technologies offer a wide spectrum of material synthesis and treatment options, amongst others the synthesis and spheroidisation of nano-sized ceramic and metal particles (Kumar and Selvarajan, 2006). The spheroidisation process occurs within the plasma discharge via in-flight heating and melting of the powder feed material, given high enough plasma temperatures (Fridman, 2008, p. 495). Surface tension in the molten droplets results in spherical, or nearly, spherical, powder particles being formed upon exiting the plasma discharge where the droplet undergoes rapid cooling and freezes. Quite often, the bulk density of these spherical particles is higher than that of the starting material (Boulos, Fauchais and Pfender, 2013, p. 42). The different plasma spheroidisation techniques reported include radio frequency (RF) induction thermal plasmas (Jiang and Boulos, 2006; Karoly and Szepvolgyi, 2005; Yuming, Junjie and Yanwei, 2013), nontransferred direct current (DC) thermal plasmas (Chaturvedi et al., 2014; Kumar and Selvarajan, 2008; Suresh, Selvarajan and Vijay., 2008) and microwave-assisted plasma processing methods (Chen, Gleiman and Phillips, 2001; Vanamu et al., 2004; Weigle et al., 2004)"

The results of coal sink and float tests are plotted as washability curves. Analysis of these curves indicates the most effective method by which the coal can be cleaned. Sink and float experiments are samplingdependent, destructive, and use toxic chemicals. The present research introduces an alternative method based on a 3D imaging system called RhoVol, in which the density of individual particles is determined from mass and volume measurements. A quantitative error analysis was conducted on coal sample density measurements obtained by RhoVol, and the main factors influencing the errors identified and investigated. The results show that the drawback of this technique is related to its not being able to detect hidden concavities in the particle, resulting in an overestimation of particle volume. Furthermore, it is difficult to capture the impact of porosity and cracks on the volume of coal particles obtained from 3D silhouette images. This mismatch between the RhoVol data and sink and float test results has led to attempts to apply neural network (NN) and linear regression techniques to produce a fully reliable model for correction and estimation of coal density. The NN approach offers superior predictive capability over linear regression, and the estimated density distribution is in line with the sink and float analysis. The root mean square error in estimation of density using the NN model was less than 0.05 g/cm³.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is associated with various risk factors in South African mines. We investigated the association between standard threshold shifts (STSs) and exposure to noise and platinum mine dust (PMD), using demographic data, five years of annual audiometry screening results, and noise and dust exposure data. Miners’ age, sex, percentage hearing loss (PLH), and dust and noise exposure data were gathered, and a linear mixed effects regression model used to predict STS. Average occupational exposure levels to noise and dust were calculated from recorded measurements. A total of 12 692 records were analysed. Most miners were male (89.6%) and more than 50% were younger than 41 years. More than 70% were exposed to > 85 dBA noise and 58% were exposed to 1.5–2.99 mg/m3 PMD. Changes in hearing levels ranged from 8.3 dBHL at baseline (2014/2015) to 10 dBHL in 2016 (STS), with no changes thereafter. The model showed that the estimated effect on STS for males was 27% and 21% higher than for females, for the left and right ear, respectively The estimated effect of age, PLH, noise exposure and years of exposure on STS was < 10% for each variable. There was no statistically significant association between PMD and STS. The combined effects of age, sex, years of exposure to noise, and noise exposure levels, and strength of associations can be used to predict STS for this group of miners. Our findings may be used to measure the efficacy of the mine’s hearing conservation programme.

Opencast coal mining is responsible for the greatest area of land disturbance across all of the commodity types in South Africa. Many thousands of hectares have been rehabilitated to date and, although rehabilitation performance is not always measured or reported, a significant database, spanning 24 years, has now been analysed to identify the main shortcomings holding back rehabilitation sustainability across the industry. Data from 48 different collieries with rehabilitation performance scores measured from 2000-2024 were analysed. A standardised assessment framework was implemented at all 48 collieries, focusing on aspects of land capability, soil fertility, landscape form and drainage, vegetation species composition and basal cover, implementation of maintenance programmes, and prevalence of invasive alien plants. The findings show that, although invasive species management, plant species composition, and plant basal cover are often adequate, the implementation of aftercare and maintenance programmes (influencing soil fertility) and deficiencies in overall landform design and drainage systems are most significant in preventing overall rehabilitation progression and self-sustainability. Integrating these during design and rehabilitation execution, followed by intensive maintenance (especially in the first five years post-topsoiling and seeding) will be key for the overall industry performance to improve to acceptable levels. The database is biased towards collieries that actually do undertake rehabilitation and that do measure it, hence the actual industry performance is likely worse than what is presented. Due to the substantial hectarages involved and the main post-mining land uses being grazing and crop production, the industry cannot afford to keep perpetuating deficiencies in achieving the foundational aspects of rehabilitation that would pave the way for sustained economic future use.

Efficient recovery of titanium from titaniferous magnetite ores continues to be a promising, yet unrealised opportunity, despite significant occurrences of titaniferous magnetite deposits worldwide and the existence of established industrial-scale practices. Current smelting processes only recover iron and vanadium, while the titanium is discarded in the waste slag. These slags are stockpiled and present massive environmental challenges, while still containing value as residual iron, vanadium and titanium. The complex mineralisation of these deposits does not allow for a significant opportunity to separate the titanium and magnetite minerals through normal physical upgrading processes. An upgrading process is therefore required to derive economic value. An efficient process technology could create an opportunity to unlock all three valuable commodities. South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, the largest known deposit of its kind in the world, is known for the high vanadium content but is also associated with relatively high concentrations of titaniferous magnetite. The quality of the Bushveld Complex was one of the drivers for the establishment of the Highveld Steel and Vanadium Company in the mid-1960s. The unfortunate demise of Highveld Steel and Vanadium created an opportunity to review current practices and evaluate the best available process for this complex ore in the context of the three elements of interest. Past and current processes, the nature of these deposits and the potential to recover titanium are assessed to highlight the potential of fluxless smelting of titaniferous magnetite to produce a titania-rich slag as feedstock to the pigment, titanium metal industry in conjunction with recovery of iron and vanadium. Ilmenite smelting practices are proposed as a suitable alternative to achieve the goal, namely sustainable processing. This paper provides a review on coloured gold, platinum, andpalladium intermetallic compounds, and discusses the models thatwere developed to obtain these materials. These compounds have acrystal structure of high symmetry, such as the CaF2or CsClstructures, ensuring distinct electron band structures. Variousexamples of coloured gold, platinum, and palladium intermetalliccompounds are provided. More in-depth discussion is provided on thepurple gold (AuAl2) and yellow platinum-aluminium (PtAl2)compounds with CaF2structure, as well as the purplish-pinkpalladium-indium (PdIn) compound with CsCl structure. Precious metal intermetallic compounds are used in jewellery andprovide a new dimension to design. Some of these compounds havealso found use as barrier coatings on turbine blades for jet engines,and more recently, research has been conducted into their potentialuse as catalysts, electro-catalysts, sensors, capacitors, and fordecorative coatings.

Putting out fires in faces is an extremely complex and dangerous operation from the technological point of view which sometimes is accompanied by human victims. The new technology of fire-extinguishing sets giving directly into a mining face has been developed at the DNTU in order to put out such kinds of fires. The technique presupposes an availability of special installation placed on ventilation and conveyor mining drift. In case of fire a special fire-extinguishing powder is delivered with the help of remote control into mining face. Subjects, allowing to determine powder delivering distance in the frame of mining workings are presented in the report. The given technology substantially increases safety of accident work which are carried out in case of fire.

"Falls of ground pose costly hazards to personnel and equipment and thus measures should be taken to prevent them. This study endeavours to improve the support systems used in geotechnically poor ground at a Zimbabwean platinum mine by analysing the status quo and recommending an effective support system. Various techniques were used to determine the quality of ground conditions, predict the rock mass behaviour, and to identify the appropriate rockbolt type. An analysis of the current ground control methods and their limitations was also undertaken.The results showed that the current support system and mining practices in poor ground need to be modified to improve safety and productivity. Stoping overbreak is influenced by poor ground conditions and the explosives currently used. The use of emulsion is recommended to replace ANFO. Redesigning of pillars is also recommended in poor ground conditions. An evaluation of the current roofbolt system indicated an opportunity for improvement. With new insight on the performance of the shorter length roofbolts currently in use, a new support system was recommended taking into consideration cost-benefit analysis. Barring down using pinch bars in poor ground was seen as a risky and time-consuming exercise, hence the use of mechanical scalers is recommended to achieve zero harm and to meet production targets. Smoothwall blasting is recommended in poor ground to minimize excavation damage. Other recommendations include the use of hydrological surveys to determine groundwater levels and implement corrective measures. Both empirical and numerical modelling approaches need to be utilized in determining the optimum support. IntroductionThe presence of geological discontinuities such as faults and joints weakens the rock mass. Adequate support is critical in achieving zero harm in underground mines. This paper reviews the current support systems used in poor ground conditions at a Zimbabwean platinum mine. The area of research is located on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The mine exploits platinum group elements (PGEs) and base metals. It is shallow, having a maximum depth of less than 300 m. The Great Dyke is the second largest reserve of PGEs, following the South African Bushveld Complex (Oberthur et al., 2012). It is a linear layered intrusion that extends for about 550 km with a maximum width of 11 km (Prendergast, 1989). The generalized section of the Great Dyke is almost like a trumpet, comprising layers that dip towards the centre. The reef exploited at the mine, the Mineralised Sulphide Zone (MSZ), is located in the pyroxenite layer, which is hosted in the ultramafic sequence. The MSZ is a uniform layer about 2– 3.5 m thick, dipping at around 10–14° from surface outcrop towards the axis of the basin, and located between bronzite and websterite horizons. The visible disseminated sulphide mineralization shows a typical and consistent vertical distribution of platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal values. The research was undertaken to review the current support systems used in geotechnically poor ground conditions in a bid to improve both safety and productivity."

"The complex planning required to achieve any planned production yields multiple and dissociated responses over the life of project (LOP). The customary decision-making process negates the possibilities of developing optimized and integral solutions from operating levels up to business and strategic levels. This results in an inefficient project or overall underperformance of the operation.In the project setting, disconnected trade-offs and improved performance studies become inadequate, because they are site-specific and use only a few comparative parameters. They are often based on a small data-set.Decisions taken to achieve overall objectives require the correct determination and dissemination of key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs indicate efficiency in operation, whereby the marginal rate of technical substitution corresponds to the rate of production. It is the necessary condition for optimization. Performance realization for sustainability follows optimization modelling, the latter often being presented with financial results such as business net present value (NPV). It considers techno-financial constraints and provides a strategic and aligned outlook of KPI decisions for an enhanced and integrated outcome.This paper explains a mining case study that is rendered efficient, and through business optimization (BO) short-term and sustainable targets are reached. Business optimization increases the NPV by 14.7%. This is achieved by challenging conventional decision-making associated with maximizing business value by including environmental externalities within the LOP."

Rare earth elements (REEs) have special properties that prompted their extensive use in high-tech applications. The demand for REE has, therefore, increased over the past years, resulting in the supply risk of the materials. Extraction from non-conventional low-grade ores, like easy-to-mine ion adsorption clays (IACs), by hydrometallurgical methods is being explored to supplement the supply of REEs. The extraction of REEs from low tenor IAC leach solutions requires enrichment using cost-effective methods such as precipitation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand the recovery of REEs from IAC leach solutions using various reagents for precipitation. In the first part of the study, recoveries of REEs from IAC leach solutions through direct precipitation using H2C2O4 and NH4HCO3, as well as antisolvent crystallization using C2H5OH, were predicted via thermodynamic modelling using OLI Stream Analyzer. Verification experiments were then conducted through the use of an agitated reactor. Simulation results showed that high yields of REEs were possible using each of the reagents, but large quantities of C2H5OH were required. Experimental results confirmed the high yields predicted from simulations. Precipitation with H2C2O4 was found to selectively recover REEs while rejecting Al. However, utilization of NH4HCO3 and C2H5OH resulted in the co-precipitation of Al. Furthermore, the yield of Y from antisolvent crystallization was significantly lower than the theoretical value. The product recovered from antisolvent crystallization consisted of well faceted, large crystalline particles, which filtered faster than the fine, amorphous REE carbonates recovered using NH4HCO3. REE oxalates were crystalline, larger than the REE carbonates and, overall, showed the highest filtration rate.

The pre-concentration process of magnetic coarse particles can discharge waste rock or liberated gangue before milling, which is an effective means to reduce cost and increase the efficiency of the concentrator, but the weakly magnetic ore doesn’t have the effective separation method of coarse particle such as hematite, limonite, ilmenite and so on, Because the composite iron minerals contain both strong and weak magnetic elements, the pre-concentration process cannot be applied, or the existing pre-concentration process has problems of complicated configuration and high operation cost. By researching a new type of external magnetic separation technology, the pre-concentration process of composite iron ore was realised by single equipment, which can have a good recovery rate with simple arrangement. In this paper, the separation principle and structure characteristics of the external magnetic separator were researched, and the magnetic circuit characteristics of the external magnet were analysed. The laboratory tests of vanadium titanium magnetite were conducted, and the test results proved that the external magnetic separator can be applied for the pre-concentration process. The industrial application shows that a product of TFe 24.76% with 90.08% recovery, TiO2 10.10% with 91.78% recovery can be achieved from the feed of TFe 20.67%, TiO2 8.33%. Falls of ground (FOG) still account for around 35 per cent of all fatalities in underground southern African mines. To help reduce FOG, appropriate support technology needs to be implemented, and a mindset and cultural change are required to make a significant change. Discipline plays a major role and needs attention, whilst appropriate first-world support technology is available to assist in the reduction of injuries and the improvement of productivity. Section 54 mine stoppages due to FOG are costly. Appropriate support should reduce these unnecessary stoppages. Coal mining has adapted leading support technologies over the years. Platinum and chrome mines have shown significant moves towards adopting leading and appropriate support technologies, seeing noteworthy changes in injury statistics for the better. In typical conventional underground mining operations, the use of temporary support components offers some protection to workers while the permanent and generally more elaborate support systems are installed or constructed. Nonetheless, FOG continue and still result in injuries to people. The author wishes to explore the options and practicality of making use of new-generation support products and technology to provide not only safer support operations, but to also enhance productivity at the working faces. This paper will examine the use of appropriate support technology as a means to making the working stope or development end a safer and more productive workplace.

?Rare earths ?will not be bargaining instruments?? was stated in a headline in China Daily of 29 October 2010. The Chinese government is trying to fend off the persistent accusations from Japan, the USA, and Europe that it is manipulating the supply of these so called ?critical? metals to gain political and economic advantages. The critics maintain that China has taken the rest of the world hostage by controlling 97% of the resources of rare earths. These elements are crucial in a number of high-tech applications. They are not impossible to substitute, but difficult to do so effectively. The name ?rare earth? is a misnomer, as even the least abundant is 200 times more common in the Earth?s crust than gold. They are, however, difficult to find in economic concentrations. The Chinese near-monopoly over the rare earths, together with China?s scramble for other resources in Australia, Africa, and elsewhere around the world, is seen as an example of a Chinese strategy to take control of vital metal resources. The Chinese are also accused of using unfair and sometimes illegal business practices in this fight for resources. Practices which, critics claim, put the Chinese interests above the interests of the host countries, in particular in Africa.

Reprocessing of historic gold tailings is a common activity in South Africa, while base metal tailings offer similar reprocessing potential. The historic base metal tailings of the Namib Pb–Zn mine (Erongo Region, Namibia) still contain valuable resources of Pb and Zn in carbonate-rich matter. Micro-analysis of primary ore minerals identifies some galena as argentiferous and sphalerite as the principal host of Cd. This study demonstrates that knowledge of primary ore mineralogy helps to reveal the hosts of valuable commodities (Ag, Cd) and that field-portable X-ray fluorescence tools allow precise and accurate determinations of major and minor elements like Zn and Cd in such carbonate-rich material. Although there are limitations to directly determine the contents of certain element (i.e., As, Sb, In), linear correlations allow prediction of the likely abundance of these elements. Providing that the inter-mineral and inter-element relations are understood and there is consistency in sampling and analytical methodology, portable X-ray fluorescence analysis is an effective method to evaluate the chemical characteristics of base metal tailings for a range of major and trace elements.

In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. In November 2009 Mintek installed the FloatStar? advanced flotation stabilization system on Vale&apos;s Cauê iron ore beneficiation plant in Brazil. In September 2010 the system was upgraded to include flotation optimization. The circuit consisted of two parallel cleaner circuits producing final concentrate. The tailings from the cleaner section passed through a scavenger circuit. Large, well-instrumented feed sumps played an important role in circuit stability, presenting a good opportunity for advanced control. Previously the plant was controlled using distributed control system (DCS) level control only. The flotation circuit processes roughly 30kt/day. The FloatStar system provided advanced control of the flotation circuit as well as of the sumps feeding the circuit. The system underwent a lengthy trial to assess the benefit that it provided. Two data sets were analysed, showing performance under advanced stabilization and optimization respectively. Several validation and consistency criteria were employed to ensure the quality of the analysis. Iron recovery and iron tailings grade were used to measure system performance. The analysis showed that the system increased recovery by up to 2.7%. In addition, the system decreased the iron tailings grade by between 1.2% (from 23.5% to 22.3%) and 4.3% (from 31.3% to 27.0%) during different test campaigns. The analysis also showed that the entire FloatStar stabilization system was active for 72.7% of the time from first activation to the end of the first data set (approximately 200 days). From the analysis it was concluded that under similar conditions for &apos;ON&apos; and &apos;OFF&apos; tests, the system provides a clear benefit. It was also found that over the longer term, the system continues to provide a benefit. This finding suggests that the results were not simply due to a short-term advantage. The size of the data set, as well as the magnitude of the recovery improvements, lends considerable confidence to these results. Therefore, it can be concluded that the FloatStar control system provides substantial benefit to operations at this site.

"Low-pressure cold gas dynamic spraying was used to deposit WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo coatings onto mild steel. Dense coatings with very low porosities were produced. No decarburization occurred during deposition and no deleterious phases were formed. The coatings were subjected to standardized material characterization tests, as well as slurry abrasion testing to assess their wear behaviour. The wear tests were conducted in synthetic minewater-silica slurries, while distilled watersilica slurries were used as a control. The hardness of the coatings, 512HV0.3 and 458HV0.3 for WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo respectively, are comparable to those achieved using high-temperature coating processes. The abrasion wear rates for both coatings were less than 5 mg/min and 10 mg/min in the distilled water-silica and synthetic mine water-silica slurries respectively. The approximately 50% increase in wear rate in the synthetic minewater slurry is attributed to a synergistic corrosive wear mechanism. The predominant wear mechanisms were identified as binder smearing and delamination, with carbide grain fracture and pull-out. IntroductionSlurry abrasion is a common phenomenon in mining operations, particularly in pipelines transporting, for example, sand-water slurries. This type of wear can cause pipeline fracture, shortened operational lifetimes, and impede pipeline efficiency. To reduce or limit abrasion, thermally sprayed tungsten-carbide-based coatings are often used as pipe linings (Kanchan et al., 2010). This is due to their attractive mechanical properties, which include high wear resistance, stiffness, hardness, compressive strength, and tensile strength. These properties are provided by the coating microstructure and composition, which is a blend of hard, wear-resistant tungsten carbide (WC) particles embedded in a fracture-tough metallic binder phase (Brookes, 1997). Cobalt (Co) is the most commonly used binder due to its excellent wetting of the WC phase and moderate mechanical properties; however, its application is limited to non-corrosive environments as it has a low corrosion and oxidation resistance (Andren, 2001). Nickel (Ni) may also be used as a binder, and has been shown to have superior oxidation and corrosion resistance, but in some applications may not have the required mechanical properties (Kim et al., 2006)."
