Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of 'Google maps?' underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum's new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

Furnace wall tubes from 600 MW subcritical boilers at three coal-fired power stations were sampled and the fireside deposits examined to determine the mechanism of fireside corrosion. This involved an indepth investigation into the morphology and composition of the fireside deposits and the conditions of the furnace that enable this type of attack. SEM-EDS analysis revealed high concentrations of oxygen, iron, and sulphur, QEMSCAN and XRD analyses identified the presence of Fe3O4, Fe2O3, FeS, and FeS2. Differential thermal analysis showed thermal activities at temperatures of 500–600°C, 900–1100°C, and 1100–1250°C, which are associated, respectively, with FeS2 oxidation to FeS and Fe2O3, at 475–525°C, formation of aluminosilicates at 925–1100°C, and melting of FeS around 1190°C. The absence of sodium and potassium eliminates the contribution of molten alkali sulphates to the corrosion. The consistent coexistence of iron sulphide and iron oxide is indicative of the substoichiometric conditions in the furnace, while the detection of pyrite suggests that the coal is not completely combusted, which points to a poor combustion process. These observations were affirmed by gas analysis at one of the stations, where very high levels of carbon monoxide were measured at the furnace wall (≥ 14 000 ppm) and furnace exit (≥ 3500 ppm). The high CO concentrations are indicative of limited combustion caused by limited O2. These reducing conditions promote the formation of FeS-rich deposit, which is the corrosive species responsible for degradation.

The leaching kinetics of cerium (Ce) and yttrium (Y) in sodium-hydroxide-digested non-magnetic coal fly ash using acetic acid were investigated. The variables analysed were pH, solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L), and temperature. The results show that cerium and yttrium's maximum recovery was 57.33% and 58.36%, respectively, under leaching temperature of 90°C for Ce and 60°C for Y at pH of 1,74 and 10 g/mL solid-liquid ratio in 240 minutes. Increasing the leaching time to more than 120 minutes did not significantly improve the results. After the magnetic separation process, the ICP-OES analysis shows a slight increase in the concentration of cerium and yttrium on nonmagnetic components. The XRD and ICP-OES analysis for the sample before and after silicate digestion shows that 40% silicate was dissolved. The calculation of apparent activation energies of leaching using the Arrhenius law for the leaching of cerium and yttrium gives 22.72 kJ/mol and 35.84 kJ/mol, respectively. The kinetic leaching model of cerium and yttrium all fit Dickinson's new shrinking core model. The calculation results show that the leaching reaction is controlled by combining interface transfer and diffusion across the product layer.

This paper deals with the sampling and mass measurement for ore delivered from a shaft to a processing plant and the contribution of the data from these measurements to the metal balances from shaft deliveries to final metal production. Accurate measurement of the grade and tonnage of run-of-mine ore is important for four main reasons; ? It enables the measurement of the production from different profit centres to within statistically determined confidence limits for daily, monthly, or annual averages. The profit centres could be individual shafts within a mining complex or ore treated on a toll basis ? The monthly production at shaft head is compared to the grades and tonnage determined from underground sampling and mass measurement in terms of a shaft call factor ? The sum of the production from the shafts is the input to concentrators. This input is a major part of the total input into a complex with concentrators, smelters, and refineries. In terms of the Codes of Practice for Metal Accounting the inputs are compared to outputs and inventory changes to assess the efficiencies and unaccounted losses or gains at the various stages in the flow of metal from source to market ? On a daily or daily moving average basis, the grades and tons from shafts are monitored and compared against these quantities from underground measurements. This acts as a control on off-reef mining, dilution, and other factors underground. Accurate measurement of grade of ore at the shaft head has been a challenge because of the large particle size. The conventional wisdom has been that ore can be sampled accurately only after it has been milled to give a slurry that is sampled as feed to a flotation process. However, when the ore fed to a flotation plant comes from multiple sources each source has to be sampled separately. So, relying on the grades determined using the sampling of concentrator input with cross-stream slurry samplers is not an option for determining the grade from an individual shaft. Impala has developed a system for sampling and weighing run-of-mine ore from multiple shafts. The system involves sampling the inputs to the plants using cross-belt (hammer) samplers and weighing the deliveries using in-motion railway weighing systems. Many samples are taken. Individually they have a high variance but, as a consequence of the averaging effect of large numbers and as shown by statistical analysis, the mean results are fit for the purposes of daily grade control for shafts and for monthly accounting of production from individual shafts. In the metal accounting systems at Impala, the measurement of input, including ore and toll-treated material is compared to the output in the form of final metal and tailings losses, as well as any inventory change that takes place, in order to determine a final metal balance from mill feed to product. The calculated inventory is compared to that measured, and the difference, or unaccounted- for metal, is then reported as a percentage of input. The balances obtained over several years yields balances for platinum that are below 1% imbalanced. After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. OosterveldIn opening the session, the Chairman indicated that the papers and discussions would revolve about quantitative methods of analysis and optimization of various aspects of exploration planning. The five papers would cover a wide range of topics within a general theme of exploration analysis, and it would be appropriate, therefore, to present the. papers as representing a sequential information-gathering process, namely, (i)geochemical and geophysical types of surveying for the location and identification of anomalous zones, (ii) tren¬ching and drilling of the anomalous zones found, and (iii) further refinement of the data for ore reserve calculations and production planning.The first paper, which was presented by Dr W. A. Hodgson, dealt with the optimum spacing between soil sample traverses conducted during geochemical prospecting. The theme of the paper was that the critical sampling interval should be based on the concept of element continuity, and that this interval could be determined by means of a correlogram. Ensuing discussion concerned the probability of the method, designed for areas where dispersion was high, working in localities where dispersion was either low or virtually non-existent. In the latter eases, specific orientation surveys for varying topographic, climatic and geological conditions would possibly be more useful than the preparation of correlograms. A further suggestion was made that cost versus risk should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the spacing between traverses. A balance could be struck by mathematical optimization. If the exploration budget was fixed, then the variance of risk could be minimized.The second paper was a short contribution by Mr C. J. Lenz. Computer-based plotting and evaluation of geochemical prospecting results were carried out because the low cost of analysis in Rhodesia permitted very large volumes of data to be accumulated in mass-coverage operations. Anomalous areas were demarcated within different environments by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. In the short discussion which took place it was debated whether the method should be used only in the early high-risk stages of geochemical exploration and whether the introduction of geological bias could influence the actual results of an exploration program."

Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.

This paper reviews the current mining taxes in South Africa, discussing the recommendations of the Mantis Technical Committee, the measures already implemented, and the future outlook. It is concluded that the tax burden imposed on individuals and on the corporate sector should be reduced, and that the taxation of al economic sectors should be neutral. The reforms implemented in 1989 and 1990 are expected to continue, and it is thought that, if the State commits itself to tax neutrality and reduces the ordinary rate of company tax to 40 per cent, the rate of mining taxes will also be lower. Ring-fencing is expected to be reduced further and the rules for capital safe-havens to be refined.

"The consolidation of nano-sized composite materials presents a challenge using conventional hot pressing methods. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology has shown great promise in the successful sintering of nanoreinforced composite materials. This qualitative review seeks to impart knowledge gathered, and progress made over the years on the consolidation of nanocomposite materials using SPS technology. The review is aimed at introducing this technology to the South African science and engineering community. Emphasis is on improving the mechanical properties of structural ceramic nanocomposite materials, which over the years have shown great promise in a wide range of applications, including transport, energy, mining, and the environment. Although success has been achieved within the laboratory for research purposes, there are still great opportunities to commercialize the technology for the production of larger components with more complex shapes.IntroductionSince the pioneering work of Niihara and Nakahira (1991) over a decade ago there have been extensive attempts to harness the potential of nanostructural metals, ceramics, and composites in a number of applications (Niihara and Nakahira, 1991; Selaho et al., 1997; Sekino and Niihara, 1995; Khalil, 2012; Aalund, 2008). It is generally realized that reducing the grain size of materials to nanoscale offers a significant improvement in properties. Attempts to synthesize nanostructured compacts by conventional sintering methods have not succeeded owing to the uncontrollable high rates of grain growth driven by long dwelling times at the sintering temperatures and large powder surface areas (Sergueeva et al., 2009; Gua, Khora, and Chieng, 2004; Tang et al., 2009). Following the development of spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology, it is now possible to process nanocrystalline materials with controlled grain growth. Rates of return realized on investments in the gold mines of the newer goldfields outside the Witwatersrand were calculated and analysed over various time intervals and on various bases. It is shown that these rates of return are strongly correlated with changes in the gold price and cannot be equated with the returns that are expected when investments are made, and that the changes in gold price also affect the rates of return on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a whole. These correlations are used, together with a limited application of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, to suggest the expected levels of threshold returns in real terms for new mining projects, for projects on existing mines, and for share valuations.

The exploration of deposits generates geological data which are suitable for creating a preliminary tectonic and stratigraphic model. Linked with the topographical map and analysis data from exploration drillings, this information forms a numeric representation of the deposit. The following example demonstrates an expert system which connects chemical quality requirements and quarrying criteria, and develops a quarrying strategy based on the calculated model. Additional constraining factors like process technology, quarrying methods, landscape protection regulations, etc. are included. The goal is to guarantee a long-term, homogeneous material flow from the quarry at acceptable production costs - even in the case of an extraordinarily inhomogeneous deposit. In order to fulfil this requirement it is necessary to consider a large number of rules, criteria and instructions which can be structured as an expert system and programmed with LISP at a comparably low cost. The chosen strategy is not necessarily final, but can be changed any time by altering or varying the framework of conditions. The output consists of a block-working sequence which best satisfies the set requirements for appropriate points of quarry opening.

The June General Meeting of the Branch was held in the St. Helena Club on Wednesday, 18th June, 1969. Mr J. G. Kirchner (Chairman of the O.F.S. Branch) was in the chair. There were also present: Eight Members: Messrs A. F. Leger, J. N. Saunders, T. Zadkin (Committee Members), Messrs M. G. Cullen, M. S. Grobler, C. J. Isaac, S. L. S. Swart, P. S. Turner. Eight Associate Members: Messrs R. Campbell, D. E. Couperthwaite, J. D. Couperthwaite, A. Hepburn, P. A. Hoffman, H. J. Reeders, R. B. Sutherland, P. R. Wheeler. Two Graduates: Messrs M. T. G. Davies, B. D. Goodwin. Two Affiliates: Messrs L. D. Hulley, K. L. Wilson. Three Visitors. Total Present: 24. Apologies were received from Mr L. O. W. Leimer. The Chairman declared the meeting open and, after extending a welcome to all visitors, said that it was his sad duty to announce the recent death of Mr. R. Jack, Associate Member. As a mark of respect to the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved, those present stood in silence for a few moments. MINUTES OF PREVIOUSGENERALMEETING The Minutes of the Previous General Meeting held on the 19th February, 1969, which were published in the April Journal, were taken as read and their adoption proposed by Mr J. N. Saunders and seconded by Mr D. E. Couperthwaite. MA TTERS ARISING FROM THESE MINUTES There were no matters arising from these minutes. ELECTION OF SCRUTINEERS Mr V. J. Isaac proposed and Mr M. S. Grobler seconded a motion that Messrs J. G. Kirchner, J. N. Saunders and M. G. Cullen be elected scrutineers in the forthcoming election of Committee Members. GENERAL BUSINESS The Chairman announced that a visit to the South African Railways Workshops in Bloemfontein had been arranged for the 23rd July, 1969 and expressed the hope that this would be well patronised. TALKS The Chairman called first on Mr D. E. Couperthwaite to present his paper on 'Heavy media separation' and then on Mr A. F. Leger to present his paper on 'Engineering plastics'. Both presentations, which were illustrated with diagrams, proved of great interest to all members. A vote of thanks to both speakers was proposed by Mr T. Zadkin. CLOSURE After thanking the speakers, the Chairman thanked all present for their attendance and declared the Meeting closed at about 9.30 p.m. Refreshments were then served.
