In recent years, rapid depletion of the higher grade reserves, allied to decreases in paylimits, has led to the exploitation of secondary, erratically mineralized placer horizons on various marginal and low grade gold mines. On Blyvooruitzicht Mine, the rich Carbon Leader Reef has limited reserves, necessitating exploration of the lower grade Middelvlei Reef. This placer has always presented evaluation and exploration problems, to such an extent that it was, at one stage, considered uneconomic. Despite an extensive underground drilling programme no ore reserve targets of reasonable size were apparent. However, when a certain degree of parallelism between sedimentological trends in the Middelvlei Reef and the underlying Carbon Leader was recognized, a meaningful exploration model could be developed. Firstly, all historical sampling records for the Carbon Leader were entered into a computerized system; the database comprised in excess of 340 000 data points. Variables captured consisted of gold value, uranium value, con- glomerate thickness and total reef thickness. The raw data were then averaged into blocks, and plots of different variables were computer-generated for further analysis. This enabled the Carbon Leader to be modelled sedimentologically and, thereby, exploration targets for the Middelvlei Reef were generated, based on the Carbon Leader facies trends. Geostatistical analysis of sampling data in exposed areas of the Middelvlei Reef underground has confirmed the sedimentological breakdown of the placer into distinct facies areas. A facies model relating value distribution patterns to depositional trends, both for the Carbon Leader and the Middelvlei Reef, has thus been incorporated into a mine planning strategy.

Haldor Topsoe A/S has developed its WSA technology to meet the demand in the market for a simple and reliable process that converts sulphurous emissions from off-gasses into high-grade sulphuric acid. With more than 50 references in 25 countries, the WSA technology has proven its ability to generate acid at 98% concentration, efficiently and economically. The wet gas sulphuric acid (WSA) technology treats the furnace off-gas directly from upstream gas cleaning plants. No further drying is required, since the humidity present in the off-gas is used to hydrate the SO3generated in the converter and produce sulphuric acid. The heat generated during the oxidation, hydration and condensation processes is principally reused in the process to preheat the off-gas to the required temperature level, and also to generate high pressure superheated steam for process use. This advantage of steam production, coupled with lower water and power consumption requirements, is particularly important in the African production environment. Having fewer process components than conventional acid plants, the WSA technology is a simple and compact operation, which makes it easier to retrofit into an existing smelter plant. Further, the WSA technology simultaneously offers the possibility to treat multiple gas streams arising within the production facility due to superior flexibility in terms of SO2concentration and turndown ratio.

Many factors, from engineering and design to supply, installation, and operation affect the service lifespan of cast refractory linings. If a shortcoming occurs at any of these stages, the lining lifespan can be drastically reduced. Improvement of post tap hole practices is achievable by mechanized handling of melt during the production of Ferro Chrome, resulting in higher recovery of chromium. The paper deals with modern practices adopted in the production of ferro-chrome since past two decades. The methods and practices deal with various areas : a) Improved method of operating the tap hole by selection of right quality of refractory to maintain the life of tap hole. b) Collection of melt in different types of receptacles like refractory brick lined mild steel ladles, cast steel ladles, cast iron pans being chosen for cost effective and efficient handling. c) Separation of slag and metal, casting of metal, crushing, sizing and stock piling etc. d) Slag disposal and recovery of entrapped metal. The drive behind the above development is continuous improvement, which results in higher chromium recovery and reduces loss of metal in slag by completely mechanized method so as to be at the same level with producers of ferro-chrome in other advanced countries , in the emerging global economy.

"Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper-gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. Initially, the ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. Subsequently, the feed source shifted primarily to freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better flotation kinetics, but with the downside of lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the rougher circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory flotation test work that were discussed at length in a previous paper1. Salient among the recommendations adopted as a result of previous work were increased circuit capacity and a modified configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidization stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and a below-specification final concentrate product. This was due primarily to higher mass pulls from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams, and which necessitated an enlarged cleaning capability. The extra cleaning capacity came on stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. IntroductionThe Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining plc, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd (ZCCM). The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005."

The cross-belt sampler is a device that is very widely used even though it has not been ratified by the Standards associations. This paper is concerned with the bias testing of two cross-belt sampler designs against stopped belt samples and a cross-stream cutter at the belt end. The bias analysis is carried out using size distribution as the analyte and conventional t-testing and the Hotelling T squared test, which are compared for their effectiveness. The paper considers the issue of detectable bias and the statistical planning of bias tests.

Flotation involves the selective levitation of mineral and its transfer from cell to launder. The flotation rate is the rate of this transfer. It may be defined by the slope of a recovery-time curve for any cell in a bank or at any time in a batch operation. The objective in flotation rate study is an equation expressing the rate in terms of some measurable property of the pulp. This can be either the concentration of floatable mineral in weight per unit volume or a relative concentration, which will be a function of the recovery. A rate equation for an actual flotation pulp will contain at least two constants, both to be determined from the collected data. The data used in this paper were collected from bench-scale flotation tests on Konkola primary mill cyclone overflow at various pulp densities and pre-flotation thickener underflow at a pulp density of 35% solids by weight.

Global trends stipulate the need to optimize existing assets while reducing environmental impacts. This paper illustrates the procedure that was followed to achieve such goals at one of the coal burning flash dryer units at an Anglo American smelter. An in-depth study of the process and related literature led to the development and installation of a revised control philosophy. This system includes modifications to the existing regulatory control structure as well as a hybrid rule-based and model-predictive advanced process control (APC) layer. Since commissioning of the APC, this flash dryer?s average throughput has increased by more than 6%, despite higher feed moistures. Furthermore, even though coal consumption has increased slightly, operating efficiency has improved by close to 5%. This was made possible by improving stability of the drying column outlet temperature by approximately 40%, which in turn enabled selection of a more optimal setpoint. Recent data has shown that APC utilization now exceeds 95%. This is indicative of a successful controller installation with good site acceptance. The same philosophy has therefore since been rolled out to most of the other flash dryers in the group.

The Mine Planning Department of Rio Tinto Management Services South Africa has installed an interactive graphic work station to assist with the long- term mine planning of Palabora. Previously, the planning was drafted manually after which digitised areas were fed to the computerised ore reserve system. This method was slow, tedious, prone to error and was becoming incapable of meeting new planning parameters. To assist the planning engineer an interactive graphic system was developed, and subsequently a rewrite of the ore reserve reporting system was incorporated. The work station has reasonable computing power and, when not utilised for graphics, has been found suitable for the evaluation of various non- graphical applications, a recent example of which was the in-pit crusher investigation. This project, in contrast to similar studies, was not based on a fixed system throughput but rather on a well designed system which would be operated at its own optimum capacity. In order to determine the probable throughput a simple simulator was designed to model the crushing and conveying system. This paper describes the investigation into the specifications for the work station, the selection of hardware, operating system and languages. An over- view is then given of the graphic planning system. The in-pit crushing simulation has been included as an example of how the work station has been applied to other, non graphical, applications.

Two backfill systems have been developed on West Driefontein, namely the centrifuge dewatered tailings system and the cyclone-classified tailings system. Modifications to the two systems since the publication of the original paper (Close and Klokow, 1985) are discussed in addition to the results obtained. Considerable experience has been gained from the operation of the centrifuge dewatering units as well as the placement of dewatered tailings in a difficult mine environment. The centrifuge dewatered tailings method has proved successful in the extraction of a highly stressed block of ground at No. 5A Sub-vertical Shaft. The utilization of backfill support in this area made it possible to dispose of a high-grade barrier pillar. This pillar was considered necessary prior to the introduction of backfill support. The recovery of the gold from this pillar made the use of dewatered tailings backfill cost- effective, despite high labour and maintenance costs. Current experience with the bagfilling method of placing cyclone- classified tailings indicates that it is viable and requires considerably less capital investment. Although expensive at present, it is envisaged that costs will decrease once cheaper bags and other forms of stope support are used. The placement of backfill in small-diameter sausage-type bags requires no change in mining cycle and allows the backfill to be placed close to the stope face. Both backfill systems are being expanded but preference is to be given to the cyclone-classified tailings system.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.

Microwave technology has for decades been a tool for astronomers to map and understand the complexities of the universe its composition and extent. It is also used on a laboratory scale by spectroscopists to examine properties of atomic and molecular compounds. In this novel work we will introduce microwave technology to be used for the investigation of liquid slag structures. The preliminary results indicate that the alteration of the slag composition could be correlated to the measured microwave refractive index. The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI)generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps. In this study, the possibility of beneficiation of chromite tailings in the Uckopru/Fethiye-Turkey region by a combination of hydrocyclone and multigravity separator (MGS) was investigated. The two significant operational parameters of hydrocyclone, which were diameter of the apex and diameter of the vortex, and the three significant operational parameters of the MGS, which were drum speed, tilt angle, and wash water, were varied and the results were evaluated with the central composite rotatable design. In order to produce a chromite concentrate by hydrocyclone and MGS, mathematical model equations were derived by computer simulation programming, applying the least-squares method using Minitab 15. Second-order response functions were produced for the grade and recovery of chromite concentrates.

Processing confidence for a bankable feasibility study on a green field heavy mineral deposit is inmost cases achieved only through bulk sample processing. Bulk sample is classified as a large enough concentrate sample that is processed into final products to satisfy market sample demand as well as further processing demands such as smelting. In this case study the demand was to produce 500 tons of heavy mineral concentrate from more than 5 000 tons run-of-mine on are mote location with limited to no infrastructure. The various challenges faced and lessons learned are documented as an outcome of the success of this mission.

"Szaibelyite–suanite type ore is rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. We propose a new method to extract both metallic magnesium and valuable residues rich in boron by reduction using metallic aluminium.Thermodynamic analysis of the reactions between aluminum and MgO, Mg2B2O5, and Mg3B2O6 was carried out. The effects of CaF2 addition, temperature, mass of Al, and pellet formation pressure on the extraction of magnesium were also investigated experimentally.The results indicate that the magnesium oxide phase can be displaced from 2MgO-B2O3 and 3MgO·B2O3 by CaO in the reduction system. The reduction ratio of magnesium oxide was 38% without calcium fluoride addition, increasing to 94% with 5.1% calcium fluoride. The reduction ratio increased with increasing temperature and mass of Al. To obtain a higher reduction ratio, the reduction pellet should be formed under a reasonable pressure.IntroductionBoron and its compounds are widely used in textiles, borosilicate glass, metallurgy, fertilizers, and nuclear shielding. Boron resources are mainly found in Turkey, the USA, Russia, and China. In Liaoning, China, there are abundant szaibelyite–suanite type ores that are rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. Szaibelyite and suanite ores are used to produce borax by a carbon dioxide– soda process. Annually, 2 Mt of waste materials containing 3–20% B2O3 and 2–25% MgO are produced during the process. It is necessary to make use of these waste materials containing high concentrations of boron oxide and magnesium oxide to avoid environmental problems as well as for economic reasons (Ozdemir and K1pcak, 2007)"

As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS© Expert system together with three VisioRockTM online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS© is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia Pacific's (MMPT AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS© logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

The problem of direct-current plasma arc behaviour, interaction, and dynamics is considered in the context of metallurgical DC arc furnace applications. Particular attention is paid to the transient flow behaviour of arc systems. A mathematical formulation of the physics used to describe the arc system is presented, and includes the spatial and temporal evolution of fluid flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetism. Based on this formulation, a numerical model is developed using a finite difference approach on a regular cartesian grid in both two and three dimensions, with a special focus on robust stability, high resolution modelling, and high performance. A collection of results produced using the numerical model to study pilot plant-scale furnaces is then presented. These address a range of process and design variables and their effect on the numerical model?s results. Where possible, the qualitative behaviour of the model is compared to available experimental data. A number of novel effects and phenomena are seen in the dynamic behaviour of the DC plasma arc model for both single and multiple arc systems, which may lead to improved understanding, control, and manipulation of such systems where they occur in industrial applications. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the main strategic restructuring aspects of companies that are directly (coalmines) or indirectly (companies that depend on coalmines) linked to coalmining. An attempt is also made to determine the principal factors required for the successful execution of a restructuring process in companies focused on the basic activities of coalmining, such as companies that provide supporting activities. The restructuring process exerts an influence on the whole area that relies on coalmining. So coordination of activities among the government, the local community, and the coalmine is very important. This is the major premise of this paper. The first section of the paper focuses on identifying and analysing the key factors in restructuring and a selection of key methods, drawing on past and present practice. The key factors to be considered in a model of enterprise restructuring in the coalmining sector are considered. The second section is dedicated to the actual design of the model of enterprise restructuring in the coal industry. The proposed model is based on positive experiences in the restructuring of coalmining companies in Europe, with an emphasis on Slovenia, successful approaches to crisis management in corporations, and identifying key areas in bringing about a strategic turnarounds in company operation. To support the argument for the key business areas, a brief summary of empiric findings has been included to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and the restructuring process. The summary is based on the survey done in both Slovenian coalmining companies (especially in Velenje Coal Mine) and their subsidiaries. A major mud push occurred on the 870 m production level, scraper drift block cave at Dutoitspan diamond mine in November 2011, during which it is estimated that more than 4 400 m3 of mud engulfed the west cave. The production level was successfully evacuated during the mud push with no loss of life or injury to personnel, thanks largely to mine employees being well trained in and adhering to on-mine mud rush evacuation procedures. All access to the west cave was lost as a result of the mud push. Clean-up operations are currently under way to regain access to the production level, to establish the extent of damage to scraper drifts and equipment, and to evaluate what remedial works may be required to resume production. The magnitude of the Dutoitspan mud push necessitated a detailed investigation into the key contributing factors leading up to the incident, which are discussed in this paper. Mud rush mitigation measures in place on scraper drift block caving operations at Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, and Wesselton diamond mines in the Kimberley area are critically reviewed. Recommendations are furthermore made for enhanced mitigation based on mud rush risk profiles derived for different production areas in these old scraper drift block caves.
