A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

South African discard coal fines and K₂CO₃ blends were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln to produce ashes for H₂SO₄ leaching tests. The optimized H₂SO₄ leaching conditions of 6.12 mol.dm³ (M) H₂SO₄, solid to liquid ratios 1:5 and 1:10, and 80°C for 8 hours were used. K₂CO₃ was added to increase the dissolution efficiency of K. The objective was to determine if the Al present in metakaolinite (Al₂O₃.2SiO₂), the Al, K, and Ti in the alumino-silicate glasses, and the Ti in rutile (TiO₂) in the ashes could be selectively dissolved in H₂SO₄. XRF results show that the ashes formed at 700°C dissolved more efficiently (87% Al, 89% K and 23% Ti) compared to the ashes formed at 1050°C. This can be attributed to the presence of Al₂O₃.2SiO₂, K₂CO₃ melt, K₂CO₃ remnants, KAl(SO₄)₂, and K-aluminosilicate glass in these ashes. XRD results indicate that the ashes prepared at 1050°C contained anorthite (CaAl₂Si₂O₈), microcline (KAlSi₃O₈), pseudomullite (Al₂O₃.SiO₂), and silicon spinel (2Al₂O₃.3SiO₂), which are either insoluble or only sparingly soluble in H₂SO₄. These minerals resulted in the lower dissolution efficiencies of Al and K. Based on the high dissolution efficiencies of Al and K for the ashes produced at 700°C, coal fines blended with K₂CO₃ could possibly be utilized as feedstocks for the production of aluminium(III), potassium(I), and titanium(IV) and a sulphate-containing leach liquor. Furthermore, the environmental issues and costs associated with the handling and disposal of large volumes of coal fines will also be resolved.

"The purpose of this study was to establish the impact of discount rates on cut-off grades for narrow tabular gold deposits as characterized by the goldfields of the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. There are various methods available for determining the cut-off grade, from simple breakeven calculations to sophisticated software packages that consider a variety of inputs to optimize the cut-off grade. For this study a simple financial model was created in Microsoft Excel® that links the ore flow, block listing, and the cash flow. This allows the cut-off grade to be optimized considering how the cost of capital and chosen discount rate affect the cash flow.The discounted cash flow (DCF) and resultant net present value (NPV) are a widely used valuation method for production properties according to the South African Code for the Reporting of Mineral Asset Valuation (SAMVAL Code). The financial model in this study utilizes the Solver function, as well as simple Microsoft Excel spreadsheet formulae to optimize the NPV. Solver was chosen as it is a standard feature in Excel and thus no additional software costs are incurred beyond the basic Microsoft Office suite. For the purpose of this study, just narrow tabular gold deposits of the Witwatersrand Basin were considered. An example of a typical ore block listing, as well as the costing figures, was obtained from an operating gold mine. The results obtained from the study financial model were compared to the current cut-off grades obtained from the mine using their proprietary optimizer program, and were found to be comparable. The methodology utilized for this study thus appears valid.The cut-off grade was optimized considering the cash flow, which includes the variable mineral resource royalty tax, the variable gold income tax, as well as the discount rate. By comparing the resultant NPVs using discount rates of zero, 9%, and 12%, the impact of the discount rate on cut-off grades, resultant life of mine, and average mining grades (AMG) could be compared for the example ore block listing. The South African Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) does not require operations to state if a discount rate was considered in determining mineable reserves. Mining companies approach the question of applying discount rates in determining their cut-off grades, and thus mine planning strategy, in different ways. Due to the negative impact that optimizing purely on NPV has on the life of mine, some choose to optimize only on profit. Other companies have reverted to utilizing pay limits as their primary grade planning strategy. The calculated cut-off grade is then considered to be another planning indicator rather than a hard determination of mineable reserves."

Seawater has become a viable alternative for different uses in copper hydrometallurgy. In this paper we review the main physical and chemical characteristics of seawater and how these influence copper production. Reliable data on the use of continental water are reported, and the current use and consumption of seawater in the Chilean mining industry is analysed, indicating the main areas of use and the main problems encountered. Additionally, the influence of the elements in seawaterthat have the most influence on the extractive metallurgy of copper are considered. The Chilean copper mining industry currently consumes approximately 4.1 m3/s of seawater, which corresponds to 25% of the total water used. The use of seawater for the leaching of copper sulphide minerals, such as chalcopyrite, is beneficial because it provides 20 g/L of chloride, thereby improving copper dissolution kinetics.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the 'fine' and 'coarse' size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and 'coarse' particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

Compositing or regularization of drillhole data is common practice in mineral resource estimation and is deemed a necessary step in producing unbiased estimates of mineral resources and reserves. Commonly, data are collected over irregular distances due to the varying relative thicknesses of lithologies drilled or sampling/assaying strategies. This necessitates data transformation to regular lengths of equal size to ensure that all data have the same sample support. However, there have been few detailed publications on the effect of this process on the composited data that are subsequently taken forward for the estimation process. In this paper, three currently available compositing methods are reviewed and the effects of inappropriate compositing methodologies presented. It is shown through a case study that compositing samples to different lengths leads to changes in the average and variance of the grades in the drillcores in the dataset, which will impact the final estimated value. These differences are exacerbated by breaks or gaps in data where, for a variety of reasons, there has been no data collection or data have been lost. The importance of appropriately treating blank and zero data is also presented. Globally, these differences might be minimal, but locally may be substantial, affecting the efficiency of the estimation and subsequent use of the results in, for example, mine planning and reconciliation. Further detailed investigation of compositing practices is required if the full implications of compositing are to be understood and any induced bias effectively defined.

Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) plays a fundamental role in the national and local economies of resource-rich countries in Africa. As such, more effort must be geared towards fostering this type of economic activity to sustain livelihoods in rural communities. Across Africa, efforts to operationalize ASM based on a sustainable development framework have been quite tedious and often ineffective. This is because most of these frameworks lacked context and an understanding of the continuum from the artisanal through small-scale and up to the junior miner, grouped under the general term ?ASM?. Driven by the need to contextualize some of the definitional issues in this niche sector, and gain a clearer understanding of their peculiar challenges, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on ASM by considering two of Africa?s resource-rich countries ? Ghana and South Africa. Since South Africa has made greater inroads in protecting the interests of small-scale miners, we thus draw comparisons from both countries? approach to ASM, outline the lessons learnt, and provide recommendations regarding the ways forward.

Viscosity of the slag is one of the central parameters when producing FeCr in submerged arc furnaces. It contributes to smelting behaviour and reduction kinetics of chromite ore as well as to the Cr recovery by influencing the separation of dispersed metal droplets from the slag. A typical FeCr process slag contains 5-10pct chromium oxides, CrO and CrO1.5. The neural network computation was applied to the evaluation of viscosity for slags containing chromium oxides, and the prediction of viscosity in FeCr process slag was conducted. The main results in this estimation were that the chromium oxides in FeCr process slag lower its viscosity, and that the effect of CrO on the viscosity decrease is greater than that of CrO1.5.

Coal samples taken from the No. 2 Seam and No. 4 Seam in a South African colliery were tested in a rotary triboelectrostatic separator. The two-stage triboelectrostatic separation results using the -177 µm size fraction reduced No. 2 Seam coal containing about 30.4 per cent ash to a clean product of 8.9 per cent and 13.1 per cent ash with combustible recoveries of 9.6 per cent and 30.7 per cent respectively. The same separation approach on No. 4 seam feed coal, which contained 36 per cent ash, produced a clean coal product with 10.8 per cent ash at a combustible recovery of 6.0 per cent. Petrographic tests show a significant improvement in the vitrinite content and a reduction in visible minerals encountered when using the triboelectrostatic separator, with about 53 per cent vitrinite reporting to the clean fraction for No. 2 Seam compared to the feed content of 21 per cent, and a 54 per cent vitrinite in the clean No. 4 Seam from a feed content of 21 per cent. Significant sulphur reductions were also observed after separation in both coal samples, with a better separation in the second-stage coal products.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of best practice principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis, and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned. The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95% passing 2 mm, and the design allowed for a single-cutter primary Vezin sampler taking increments from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals while filling a tanker for pneumatic offload at the base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from the smelting complex and the input to the refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ?interleaved? fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks. The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum involves the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs, and stock levels for all operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). In the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, a trend was developing whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock (sender) and the base metal refinery showed an increase in theoretical stock against physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question, and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream. This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the two sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were reanalysed, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again, and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period. From these investigations, it was found that airflows inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias. A change in sampling protocol was introduced, as well as certain physical changes to the sampling equipment, to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period that followed the phased upgrading process showed that the accounting between the smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below 5% relative to theoretical stock). Whereas in the past, ladles were simply a means of transferring molten products from furnace tapholes to points of discharge be they casting pans or waste dumps, the ladle is now becoming a more integral and versatile piece of equipment in the pyrometallurgical plant. The drive behind this development is the need for continuous improvement in performance where better, faster and cheaper means remaining competitive in the global market. This paper will explore the technologies available for the rendering of a costly and otherwise cumbersome piece of pyrometallurgical equipment more efficient and versatile in adding value to the final product. Essentially it all revolves around heat and more importantly the loss of it when tapping. The common practice is to move the molten product to its point of discharge quickly with the minimum of interruption to prevent skulling and hence the cost associated with clearing it. The advances in Oxy-fuel burners, AC or DC ladle furnaces, converters, gas purging and high velocity, bath injection systems has increased the versatility of processes and enhanced the potential for adding value to intermediate products through down stream practices such as granulation and atomisation.

South African coal discards derived from feed coal for thermoprocesses pose human health and environmental problems and incur high disposal costs. These issues need to be resolved. Coal fines and a coal fines/ K2CO3 blend were combusted at 700°C in a laboratory rotary kiln to produce ashes containing metakaolinite (Al2O3.2SiO2) and illite/muscovite/orthoclase amorphous materials. The blend ash and coal fines ash, containing 18% K2O and <1% K2O respectively, were leached with water and with 1 M and 8 M NaOH at 80°C for 4 hours using a solid to liquid ratio of 1:5. The 8 M NaOH leach yielded 17% sodalite (Na8Si6Al6O24(OH)2) formation through SiO32-, Al(OH)4-, and Na+ precipitation in the leached ashes. The 1 M NaOH leach yielded no sodalite. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the original ashes and leached ashes showed low Al and Si dissolution efficiencies due to the sodalite formation. Sequential NaOH leaching resulted in the highest potassium dissolution efficiency of 89% for the ashes of fines/K2CO3 blend and 59% for the fines. It may be possible to increase the ash-derived zeolite concentration by using even higher NaOH concentrations (12–20 M NaOH) during leaching. Sodalite derived from coal ash could possibly be utilized for water purification in industrial applications, or as molecule separators. The potassium-containing liquid could be used in fertilizer manufacture.

ABSTRACT: The paper is devoted to two major aspects related to the abandonment of salt mines: 1)- Long-term risk associated with the mechanical instability of surface and its consequences for public security and properties. 2)- Long term dissolution and transport of salt resulting from its communication with groundwater. Basic characteristic features of salt deposits and mining methods are presented through the studies already undertaken on French mines. This analysis allows to identify major hazards encountered in different traditional salt mines and solution-mining cavities. In particular, the role of overburden (presence and thickness of salt layer in exploitation roof, presence of clayey rocks or hard rocks e.g. dolomite or anhydrite), presence of water-bearing strata and possibly natural brine levels, discontinuities, etc. are discussed. In the second part, the main features of mechanical behaviour of salt (creep, damage) as well as transfer processes of this material are presented. The influence of these aspects on the long term evolution of abandoned salt mines is then analysed. KEY WORDS: exploitation, abandonment, salt, mechanical, stability, transport, solution, brine. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel bezieht sich auf zwei bedeutende Aspekte beim Salzabbau: 1)-Das langsfristige Risiko zur Bodenoberflächeunbeständigkeit und sein Einfluss über Mensch= und Gütersicherheit. 2)-Die langsfristige Auflösung und Beförderung des Salz beruhen sich auf Studien über französiche Bergbauen. Diese Analyse emöglicht es, die bedeutendesten Risiken in verschiedenen Salzgruben zu identifizieren, bzw. Traditionellen oder durch Auflösung abgebauten. Insbesondere wird die Rolle des Deckgebirges (Vorhandensein und Dicke von Salzschicht am Dach des Grube, Beisein von Tanlager oder hartem Gestein wie Bitterkalk oder Anhydrid), Beisein von wasserhaltigem Boden und/oder gesalzenen Wasserflächen, Trennflächen, usw… erötert. Im zweiten Teil werden die haupsächlichen Eigenschaften des Salzverhaltens (Kriechen und Beschädigung) beschrieben. Les principales caractéristiques de gisements et d’exploitations de sel sont présentées en s’appuyant sur les études antérieures réalisées sur les exploitations en France. Cette analyse permet d’identifier les risques majeurs rencontrés dans différentes mines de sel traditionnelles ou exploitées par dissolution. En particulier, le rôle du recouvrement (présence et épaisseur d’un banc de sel au toit de l’exploitation, présence de terrains argileux ou de roches dures telles que la dolomie ou de l’anhydrite), présence de terrains aquifères ou de nappes salées éventuelles, discontinuités, etc. sont discutées. Dans la deuxième partie, les principaux traits du comportement mécanique du sel (fluage, endommagement) ainsi que les processus de transport de ce matériau sont présentés. L’influence de ces aspects sur le comportement à long terme d’exploitations abandonnées de sel est ensuite analysée. Recently, a new kind of filtration has emerged, namely nano-filtration (NF). It is a membrane-based process which exhibits totally unique separation characteristics for dissolved salts as well as for many non-charged species. By exploiting the particular separation characteristics of this new membrane type, many unique and novel separations have been made possible. The basis for separation by nanofiltration is the negative surface charge of the membrane. This results in rejection of multivalent anions, whilst associated cations are also rejected to maintain electro-neutrality. This peculiar property enables separation of dissolved ions such as sulphate and copper from acid, whilst the acid may be purified for reuse. This paper aims at providing an overview of the principles of nanofiltration, illustrated by particular examples.

The thermal properties of manganese raw materials such as ores, sinters, and briquettes, are among the many factors that determine the amount of energy needed for processing. Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, conductivity, and apparent specific heat capacity of solid samples and compacted powder samples of manganese ores were examined from room temperature to 1000 °C. The effect of porosity (of the materials used) on the thermal properties was also investigated. The laser flash method and a pushrod dilatometer were used.

"An ideal procedure to determine the limits of flotation-based separation, as is the case with washability analysis for density separation, does not exist. Therefore, a procedure called release analysis, considered to be the counterpart of the washability process in density separation, was developed to evaluate the flotation characteristics of coal fines. Since flotation is a complex process it is necessary to know the maximum recoverable yield that could be achieved at a target ash level and what could be obtained by release analysis. Due to a number of limitations in the initial procedures, modifications were recommended by various researchers to generate an optimum separation curve. This paper presents a review of, and a discussion on, the chronological evolution of release analysis methodology over the decades. Notwithstanding the availability of a standardized release analysis procedure, such as BS 7530, the paper highlights the critical parameters involved in the procedures, such as coal type, feed characteristics, choice of reagents and dosage, operator bias, and design features of the flotation cell IntroductionCoal is a heterogeneous substance consisting of various combustible constituents (macerals) and associated mineral matter. The kind and abundance of the various macerals present in the coal, such as vitrinite, semivitrinite, exinite, and inertinite, determine the type of coal. As macerals are formed by biological degradation of different parts of the plant material, they have different properties based on their original composition. Coal cleaning processes are dependent on the differences in physical properties between the coal components (the macerals) and also between the macerals and the mineral matter. Thus the cleaning characteristics of the coal might vary from one type to the next. The cleaning processes influence the distribution and the concentration of macerals in the various size and density fractions of the cleaned product."

Accretions often form in furnaces when slag and charge materials attach to the refractory wall and build up over time. Accretion formation is usually unwanted because it reduces the working volume of the reactor and hinders material flow through the reactor. However, in some instances a thin, stable accretion layer may be desirable to protect the underlying refractory material. In order to prevent and/or manage accretion formation, it is important to understand the underlying principles of this phenomenon in the particular reactor. Excessive accretion formation hampered production at the Exxaro FerroAlloys ferrosilicon melting and atomization plant. This plant uses induction furnaces in which a 15% silicon-iron alloy is produced by batch smelting a mixture of ferrosilicon of 75%Si grade and low-carbon steel. The molten ferrosilicon alloy is then gas-atomized to a powdered product for use as a dense medium in mineral processing plants. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different impurity levels in the ferrosilicon feed material on the extent of accretion formation as well as the effect on the accretion properties, which influence the ease of accretion removal upon furnace shut-down. Refractory and accretion samples were collected after a furnace shut-down and characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy. It was concluded that the trace elements in the FeSi-75 feed material (Al, Ca, Mn) were mostly responsible for accretion formation, but that rust on the low-carbon steel and oxidation of the steel contributed to accretion attachment to the lining. The total contaminant content, calcium to aluminium ratio in the FeSi-75 feed material, and thereby the liquid to solids ratio in the accretion at temperature determine the strength of attachment as well as growth of the accretion.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations continue to grow across sub-Saharan Africa and serve as a source of livelihood to many rural communities. Owing to safety, health, environmental, and social concerns, the occupation has been regarded as a menace in several sub-Sahara African countries. Recent studies in the field of ASM prescribe formalization as a way to tame its excesses while enhancing its potential. This paper explores the concept of formalization as it relates to ASM and how it is being affected by the funding situation. The paper seeks to address the question as to whether formalization of artisanal mining operations can achieve the desired results in view of the lingering credit constraints in this mining subsector. It is recommended that, as a way of extending the scope of formalization, focus should be placed not only on access to credit in ASM but also towards optimizing the creditworthiness of ASM firms, with the goal of improving the viability of the operations.
