Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart" operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. This paper describes the use of Internet technologies with plant data. Examples are drawn from existing industrial sites. Users must project where this technology will lead - standing still is the most dangerous philosophy and the only one guaranteed to be obsolete. These examples show the way to leverage existing workers with information technology.

The flotation behavior of minerals depends on the balance between hydrophobic and hydrophilic species present at the surface of the minerals. The direct characterization of the interfacial products formed by the interaction of water and an aqueous solution of amyl xanthate with chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and tennantite (the two former contain antimony and arsenic) were carried out by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared (IR) reflection spectroscopy. The experimental data collected from in-situ (IR ATR) and ex-situ (XPS, IR External Reflection) measurements have let us determine the types of the adsorption products and to propose mechanisms of interaction between the aqueous solution of surfactant and surface of the investigated minerals. It is shown that two major processes take place at the mineral interfaces: (i) the interaction with water and oxygen resulting in the formation of the oxidation products which are mainly hydrophilic (but also a hydrophobic product was found), and (ii) the adsorption of xanthate producing different types of hydrophobic surface products. The results obtained show differences in the composition of the outermost atomic layers of the investigated minerals which obviously will produce differences in the flotation behavior of these minerals. This work forms a good fundamental basis for a better separation between copper minerals containing arsenic and antimony, and chalcopyrite.

The Endeavour Colliery is operated by Powercoal Pty Ltd. It is located in the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The mine has been in operation for about 30 years, producing around 600,000 tons of export coal annually from two production sections. On June 28. 1995, an explosion occurred underground in the 300 Panel at approximately 9:50 a.m.. There were thirty miners underground at the time of the explosion, all of whom were safely evacuated. From June 29 through July 10, personnel did not enter the mine. However, gas samples of the mine atmosphere were obtained from underground monitoring stations and analyzed. Samples were also obtained from boreholes that were drilled from an adjacent mine. On July 10, the atmosphere at the underground monitoring locations and at the boreholes appeared stable with minimal risk of combustion occurring underground. Plans were developed to begin the recovery of the underground workings. The recovery of the underground workings was completed on July 13. The underground investigation of the explosion began on July 14. The investigation was conducted by the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources. Technical assistance was pro- vided by the United States Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

It is four years since the seminal study of demand for rapid excavation by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) and Engineering outlined this technology's opportunities, requirements and significance to the challenges of urbanization and natural resource conservation. The demand study was quite simple. Opportunities were valued at market while requirements to produce new technologies were valued at cost. The significance of new technology in economic terms was measured by the net discounted gains to users over time. The Academy view in 1968 was that these gains, even most modestly estimated, appeared large enough to justify the bill for research proposed by that Committee (1). In 1970 the question of demands became international in what is recognized as the first international experiment in technological policy analysis, terminating in the Advisory Conference on Tunneling of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)(2). A monumental demand survey formed the basis for its economic assessment. The twenty-two OECD nations also made an impressive attempt to measure the magnitude of existing research and development efforts. In their recommendations periodical statistical demand forecasting and collection of demand data (Recommendation 1) was given central importance for public planning (Recommendation 2), the financing of public construction (Recommendation 3) and the encouragement of technological advance (Recommendation 4). Their program for international cooperation led to OECD's establishment of a Directorate for Environmental Affairs, and influenced the organization of the World Environmental Conference meetings now held in Stockholm under United Nations auspices. This paper describes a study of the influence of non-normal loading on the indentation behaviour of single bit-teeth. Indentation experiments have been performed on a soft, isotropic limestone using both sharp and blunt 60 degree wedge-shaped indentors constrained to penetrate the rock at 0, 15, and 30 degrees to the rock surface normal. For both sharp and blunt indentors, the normal force required to produce a given normal penetration decreased as the offset of the penetration direction from the rock surface normal increased. The crater volume produced by a given normal penetration with the sharp indentor was largely independent of the penetration direction. In contrast, the crater volume produced by the blunt indentor was increased markedly by non-normal penetration at small penetration depths, because the threshold penetration for chip formation decreased with non-normal loading. The crater volume produced by a given normal force was significantly increased by non-normal penetration, and this increase was particularly pronounced with the blunt indentor. The energy required to form unit crater volume was correspondingly reduced by non-normal indentor penetration. A simple method for predicting the reduction in the rock's resistance to chip formation is outlined, which is supported by the experimental data. The implications of these findings for rotary drilling are considered.

Calculation of the sensible heat transfer between the rock surface and the flowing air in an underground airway is still fraught with problems. There are only a few results available in the literature for the calculation of the convection in tunnels with naturally rough surfaces. Some of them are purely empirical, while others use a theoretical approach, based on the analogy between heat and momentum transfer, expressing the heat transfer coefficient as a function of the friction factor. A review and evaluation of these results are presented. The heat transfer equations obtained using the different assumptions, vary over a wide range, so that experimental results are needed to determine the formulae and constants applicable to mine airways. In situ measurements of the "physical" and "technical" heat transfer coefficient carried out in deep mines are described. The statistical distribution of the convective heat transfer coefficient on rough surfaces, as well as the regression between the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers in the turbulent flow region, are presented. Radiative heat transfer between the surface and the moist air flowing in a duct of relatively large hydraulic diameter has been taken into account during evaluation. The results will be a definite refinement of those calculations presently used in mine climate simulation models.

The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an investigation of the effect of temperature on the conditioning and flotation of an ilmenite ore with a 1:l oleic acid-fuel oil mixture as collector. During conditioning the pulp underwent characteristic changes of flocculation, deflocculation and dispersion which were monitored by measuring the power consumption of the conditioner motor. Optimum flotation results were obtained at the end of the deflocculation period. High ilmenite recoveries were obtained at high temperatures and high concentrate grades at low temperatures. The second part of the paper describes a study of the effect of temperature on the adsorption of oleic acid at the ilmenite/water interface. At high adsorption densities it was chemical and exothermic. Contact angles showed that the hydrophobicity of the collector-coated minerals increased with an increase in temperature.

The semivariogram is one of the most important tools available to the geostatistician for the analysis of mineral deposits. To be complete, a semivariogram study must include a minimum of three parts which are highly interdependent. These are: calculation of the semivariogram, mathematical modeling, and geologic interpretation. The known factors and conditions which controlled or influenced the distribution of mineralization within the body being studied should be considered in the analysis .of the semivariogram. The presence and characteristics of successive phases of mineralization, the chemical and physical properties of the host rocks and the mineralization should all be considered. This requires close and continued communication between the geologist and the geostatistician prior to and during the semi-variogram study. Geologic stationarity is needed if meaningful semivariogram results are to be obtained. The first step is, therefore, to determine whether the mineralization can be analyzed as a whole or if different geologically homogeneous sections must be defined and evaluated separately. Different methods can be used to calculate an experimental semivariogram from known sample values. The method chosen will depend not only on the anticipated and actual statistical properties of the deposit, but also on its geologic characteristics.

The Blind Springs Hill pumice beds are located 5 miles southwest of Benton, California in the foothills between the Benton Mountain Range and Blind Springs Valley. The best exposures of the pumice are in an area 0.75 miles west of Blind Springs Hill. The pumice is Quaternary ejecta material which came from the rhyolitic volcanoes in the Glass Mountain-Volcanic Tablelands area of Mono County. The pumice beds occur in two distinct layers separated by an unconformity. The upper layer is 0 to 11 feet thick and consists of coarse subangular pumice fragments, some of which are over 1.75 inches in diameter. The lower bed is medium to coarse grained with subangular fragments up to 1.0 inch. The lower bed is 0 to 9 feet thick. Overburden at the Blind Springs Hill deposit varies from 0 to 15 feet. There are approximately 1 million cubic yards of material in the deposit that can be mined. The size distribution in the deposit is mostly fine with only 10.6% of the pumice fragments being over 0.5 inch in diameter, the minimum size needed for stone-wash or acid-wash applications. Suitability of pumice for the textile industry is quantified by standard 15-minute abrasion and absorption tests. In the Blind Springs Hill deposit, the plus 0.5 inch fraction has an abrasion loss of 33% which is too high for stone-wash application but it has an absorption capacity of 36% which makes it suitable for acid-wash applications in the textile industry. The abrasion and absorption properties of this deposit are within the range of those which have been measured for other pumice deposits within the United States.

Based on the premise that understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal will lead to reducing coal dust problems in mines, a thorough study of the mechanics of crack propagation in coal was undertaken. Two approaches were considered in an attempt to understand and quantify the fracture process as it relates to fine fragment formation. In one approach, theoretical models are used which describe the size of the fracture process zone which may relate to the amount of structural damage and fine fragment formation on the new crack surface. The other approach is based on the relationship between crack tip stress intensity and new surface appearance for mixed mode crack propagation. Preliminary observations with a scanning electron microscope support the premise that fine fragment formation is related to fracture surface appearance and fracture initiation conditions. An experimental program designed to supply the input parameters for these approaches is presently underway. The experimentation features mixed mode fracture toughness testing, using a special mixed mode testing rig, and fracture velocity measurements with a crack propagation gage. The interpretation of this data via the approaches discussed will provide further under- standing of the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal.

INTRODUCTION Selective Reduction of Nickel in Oxidized Ores Oxidized nickel ores, either garnieritic or lateritic, contain much more iron than nickel. The regular carbon reduction in an electric furnace is operated in such a manner that the greater part of iron oxides is reduced simultaneously with nickel oxide, resulting in a low nickel content ferronickel. In order that the nickel content of residual slag may be suitably low, -excess carbon must be fed so that the carbon content of the ferronickel thus obtained is that of casting iron. The metal also contains other impurities such as silicon, chrome, etc. In order to convert the casting iron into slightly carburized ferronickel with high nickel content, the greater part of the carbon and more than half the iron contained therein must be oxidized by means of oxygen. Energy is thus consumed as carbon, and power to reduce iron oxides, and more energy is consumed as oxygen to re-oxidize the iron contained. This method can be economically adopted for nickel ores with grades ranging around 2. 5 to 370, but it gets excessively costly when nickel grade falls below these values. This is why, for nickel ores with low nickel grades and high iron content, studies were conducted to develop a selective reduction process which, while reducing only a small part of the iron oxide, would provide efficient reduction of nickel oxide. British Columbia's physiography - the mountains, valleys and watercourses - provides the basis for rich and varied plant and animal resources and for complex land uses. Mining alters the physical environment in a manner that may create a disproportionate impact on biological resources and land use systems. The object of environmental legislation is therefore largely the protection of the basic physical environment: land surface, water, and air. The pace of mineral exploration, placer mining, and underground and surface gold mining has recently quickened in British Columbia, testing the ability of both industry and regulatory agencies to respond to legislative requirements. Some parameters of mining activity have critical significance for environmental protection, for example: the area disturbed; the physical and chemical qualities of ore, waste and overburden; and the nature of materials handling. Acid mine drainage is a particular hazard. Provincial legislation that applies to mining includes the Mines Act, the Environment Management Act, the Waste Management Act, and the Water Act. Government of Canada legislation includes the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations. Every new mine proposal in British Columbia is reviewed in the Mine Development Review Process, which receives its mandate from the Provincial Environment and Land Use Cabinet Committee. This paper presents the findings of a face ventilation investigation, conducted by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, at a underground coal mine operating in the Illinois No. 5 coal seam. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a blowing face ventilation system in controlling methane liberation in the face area while mining with brattice distances up to a maximum of 40 feet from the face (extended cut). The continuous miner on this section was remotely controlled and equipped with a machine mounted dust collector. Data collected during this investigation included methane concentrations, intake and return air quantities in the face area, and scrubber air quantities. In addition, a time study was conducted to correlate the methane peaks to activities in the face area. In conjunction with the face study on Section A, separate methane liberation studies were conducted on three additional sections: B, C, and D. This was done in order to compare intake methane concentrations and methane liberations from other sections in the mine to the test section. Calculations indicated that the minimum intake air quantity necessary at the inby end of the line brattice for the section investigated was 7,000 cfm. Due to the higher intake methane concentrations and average methane face liberations measured on three other sections, the minimum air quantities necessary at the inby end of the line brattice were determined to be 13,900 cfm, 11,100 cfm, and 15,000 cfm, respectively.

Large roof outbursts began occurring in November 1986 at Domtar's Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario, Canada, working the bedded Salina A-2 Salt unit. The outbursts, measuring about 13-20 m in diameter, released high concentrations of methane from cavities that extended into carbonate roof units. Spontaneous ignitions of methane gas during an outburst seriously burned a mine technician. The Canadian Ministry of Labour contacted the U.S. Bureau of Mines for technical assistance to aid in mine managements1 efforts in alleviating the problem. Initial gas content determinations of salt samples from the outbursts by acoustic test methodology revealed no methane enrichment. In- mine core drilling and subsequent methane content testing indicates the main source of methane in overlying roof units. Drilling the roof units demonstrated the potential of draining methane from areas showing signs of impending outbursting and alleviating the danger. Three mechanisms are considered the most likely means by which methane was introduced to the mine environment. These are (1) hydrocarbon gases released from brines, (2) gas transport along horizontal bedding planes or gas accumulations in bedding separations, and (3) mining-induced fracturing. The abundance of higher hydrocarbons in gas yielded by non-evaporite rock samples from the Goderich mine may be indicative of a former association with liquid petroleum.

In the UK as existing face capacity is replaced, many of the new faces will have higher installed powers and be located in zones of higher strata temperature. These factors coupled with the need to increase production will result in more faces experiencing environmental difficulies, especially with respect to climatic conditions. In many cases these problems are unlikely to be solved, as in the past, by simply increasing the face air quantity. Therefore other techniques including refrigeration will be necessary, possibly requiring major capital and operational expenditure. It is easy to spend large capital sums and incur high operational expenditure without achieving the desired amount of climatic control. There is therefore a great need for reliable prediction techniques to aid in the making of sound, informed decisions which will have a significant influence in the long term on the level of production costs. A computer program able to predict the heat flows and resultant climatic conditions on a long¬wall coalfaces has been developed. Throughout it's development underground measurements have been used to validate the computer model and it has been shown that for an advancing coalface under normal production conditions that the program predicts the climate to within 1°C of the measured conditions. This paper outlines a number of methods available to improve climatic conditions on longwall faces. The coalface temperature prediction program is used to quantify the effects of these methods on the climatic conditions for a model coalface and a comparison is given. In conclusion a cool¬ing strategy for longwall faces is outlined.

The mining business in general, and coal mining in particular, is exposed to frequent and significant swings in the business cycle. Marginal coal production enters the market place in a nearly perfect competition. It must be priced aggressively if market share is to be gained. The minimum price acceptable from the standpoint of the producer is reached at the point where total variable cost are recovered. Competition occurs as companies move to reduce their variable costs in an effort to cover some portion of their fixed costs at reduced market prices. Production planning and scheduling plays a critical role in reducing costs. Multiple scenarios based on changing market conditions require that competing firms have tools available to evaluate the economic impact of transportation, blending, and processing options. In certain applications, significant cost savings can occur as a result of blending or altering preparation levels. Linear programming provides a tool with which to evaluate options and acts as a like between the mine plan and marketing decisions.

INTRODUCTION For the past 25 years, tunnel support requirements have frequently been determined, at least in North American practice, by classifying the rock according to the system proposed by Terzaghi (1), using one or more of the 8 Rock Conditions which he defined, the rock load then being selected within the range given for each Condition. However, there is a lack of published data comparing Terzaghi loads with actual measured rock loads, and it would appear that the degree of conservatism, or otherwise, of the Terzaghi approach is very often unknown. Excavation of 4 large diameter tunnels at the Tarbela Dam Project in Pakistan afforded an opportunity to compare Terzaghi and measured loads, through instrumentation of the steel ribs installed for temporary support, and by classification of the geology exposed during the tunnelling operations. In addition, the deformation of the rock surrounding the tunnels was monitored during excavation by means of borehole extensometers installed prior to the start of tunnelling. This paper describes the tunnel instrumentation and the results obtained therefrom, and relates these results to the Terzaghi load coefficients. The wettability of sandstone was investigated using the technique of dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency interval 1kHz-1MHz. The natural wetness of the material was modified to get two different sets of samples, one with sea-water wetness and the other with crude oil wetness. Measurements showed that the electric responses of water-wet and crude oil-wet samples were markedly different beside the fact that the dielectric response of both groups of samples obeys a general fractional power law. The dispersivity, of the complex permittivity component that expresses the material loss with respect to the electric field was found to be the most suitable parameter to check the wettability of the samples.

Coal mining is one of the major sources of methane release to the atmosphere by human industrial activities and is believed to contribute to -30% of the total methane emissions from industrial activities. In 1993, world saleable black coal production, attained almost 3.5 billion tonnes from which around 65% was produced underground. Coal in underground mines can contain high quantities of methane and some deep coal seams have methane content as high as 50 cubic meters per tonne of coal. Gas is re- leased during coal mining from the mined seam and in a higher degree from the neighboring unmined seams and gas bearing strata which are fractured as mining advances. This paper de- scribes a study which was undertaken to estimate the extent of methane emissions from coal mining in the world. Measured emission related data were collected from most underground coal producing countries in the world. The data included methane flows in the ventilation system, methane flows in gas drainage system, in-situ gas content, methane utilization and coal production. More comprehensive data were collected from a range of gassy and non-gassy Australian mines. Residual gas content of samples from run of mine were also measured. Using the Australian data, mathematical expressions were established to evaluate methane emissions as a function of coal production and in-situ gas content for other mines. These emission models were then used to evaluate the emissions for the countries or coal basins without measured emission data. Trends in methane emissions from underground mining for the year 2000 and beyond were also estimated.

Since 1956, when Broadbent and Callcott 1 proposed to analyze breakage processes by matrix methods, several authors and their co-workers have proposed various models of grinding that, in principle, could lead to fully automated grinding circuits. In particular, Meloy and Gaudin2, Gardner and Austin3, Kelsall and Reid4, Neloy and Bergstrom5, Callcott and Lynch 6, and Draper and Lynch have, by either computer simulation or by experimental data, or by a combination of the two, verified that comminution is reasonably well described by at least two functions: a selection function and a breakage function. The stage concept proposed by Callcott and Lynch6 requires that a classification matrix be included to completely describe breakage in an open circuit rod mill. The purpose of this work, portions of which are herein described, is to accumulate sufficient information on the breakage characteristics of quartz and magnetite in an open circuit rod mill, so that several of the theoretical and experimental approaches proposed in the literature can be compared with each other. Data is being gathered to compare the experimental method used by Kelsall and paid against the stage approach of Callcott and Lynch.
