The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. Introduction The use of diesel engines as an alternate power source in US underground coal mines has been a controversial step towards more efficent mining practices. Three areas of potential benefit are foreseen. First, diesel-powered mining equipment is believed to be more efficient, resulting in less occupational risk for any given amount of production. Second, diesels are believed to pose fewer intrinsic hazards, especially those related to fires and ignition of combustibles. Finally, several other health and safety advantages are foreseen for diesel units. Each of these issues will be discussed separately. Diesel Efficiency Proponents of the use of underground diesel-powered mining equipment point to increased production efficiency due to greater maneuverability, speed, power, and payload (Bradbury, 1973; Jorgensen, 1982; Ogden, 1978; Wenberg, 1979; Olsen, 1980). Units most suitable for diesel power include LHD vehicles, shuttle cars, personnel carriers, and maintenance vehicles. Estimates of increased efficiency vary from 60%-300% and more (Wenberg, 1979). Increased diesel mining efficiency is usually viewed as making it practical to mine lower grade seams. Diesel units can also operate over a wider range of floor pitches and distances than electrically-powered units, thus allowing mining of seams with special mining problems (Olsen, 1980). Diesel application is not a universal substitute for electrical power. For example, continuous miners are unlikely diesel candidates. Reduced Intrinsic Hazards Proponents of diesel use have pointed to the increased safety potential due to a reduction in electrocutions, arcs, burns, underground cable fires, and methane ignition (Ogden, 1978). Diesel units are frequently employed in maintenance activities for lifting and moving, and for coal cleanup. Thus the case is made that diesel use, by making powered operations more conveniently available, reduces the incidence of lower back injuries and related causes for days lost due to disability (Olsen, 1980). Several other issues relating to diesel safety have also been suggested. Diesel units can continue operation even during power outages allowing, for example, personnel evacuation. The maneuverability of diesel units make them particularly attractive in difficult physical conditions, such as long haulage from the face to the belt and in areas where water is deep. The case for diesel use focuses heavily on the potential for a "per worker" reduction in accidents, or a reduction in the severity of accidents. Since accidents are a major part of the health impact of mining, a reduction in accidents and resulting injuries would make a major contribution to the health of coal miners. Opposition to Diesel Use Opposition to the use of underground diesel mining equipment in the US seems to have started with the United Mine Workers of America. Some opposition to US diesel use has been based on a widely publicized 1976 letter from NIOSH to Mine Enforcement and Safety Administration administrator Robert Barrett (NIOSH, 1982). In essence, this letter warned that while insufficient evidence existed as to diesel effects on underground coal miners, NIOSH had concerns based on prior knowledge of separate diesel exhaust constituents and the potential for interaction between these constituents and coal mine dust. Current opposition to underground diesel use has focused on respiratory health effects related to diesel emissions, particularly nitrogen dioxide (NO,), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate content (Barrett, 1982). Asturias, in northern Spain, emits 18 Mt CO2/year to the atmosphere, which supposes the biggest industrial CO2 emissions in the country. In order to avoid CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, keeping the availability of energy from fossil fuels, background studies focussed to the selection of favourable sites for CO2 geological storage are necessary. In Asturias, the options for CO2 geological storage are sequestration in deep saline aquifers or sequestration in unexploted coal beds. In the area, there is the biggest coal basin of the country and a great Palaeozoic sedimentary basin with appropriate silicoclastic or carbonated reservoirs and impermeable caprock for CO2 geological storage, located in proximity to thermoelectric power plants and other sources of CO2 emissions. All evidences suggest that CO2 storage in deep aquifers is the most interesting option but a legal planning and a technical regulation are still to be done. The possibility for CO2 sequestration in coal beds is modest and associated to the CBM commercial exploitation. It is necessary to have in mind that the feasibility of CO2 geological storage in Asturias apart of technical factors will depend on price of CO2 ton, legal conditioning and possibility to apply emission rights to projects.

INTRODUCTION The demand for specialty metals in industrial applications is in it's healthiest state since the late 1970'8, and several specific markets are recording record sales. Such metals as gold, silver, zirconim., titanium, beryllium, gallium, germanium, the platinum group, and the lanthanides accounted for sales in excess of $2 billion in 1985 among the end uses covered in this report. Although specialty metals as a group have suffered the effects of recessionary pressures in the past, these metals have proved more resiliant than such large volume metals as copper and nickel. This is due to the unique physical properties they possess which makes the threat of substitution or replacement through technological development uneconomic. The outlook for these specialty metals is optimistic in electronics, catalysts, ceramics, and alloys, and their specialty status results .in a combined average annual growth in demand of 7% through 1990. WHAT MAKES THESE METALS SPECIAL? Such characteristics as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, catalytic activity, thermal stability, and optical properties allow the term specialty to be applied to these metals. More importantly, all of these metals possess more than one of these qualities, as shown in Table 1. [ ] These five major functions are important in the end uses for these metals, although the specific applications vary somewhat. Conductivity in term of low or high electrical resistance is of obvious importance to electronics manufacturers. Producers of circuit boards or semiconductors require such metals as gold, palladium, platinum, and gallium due to their low electrical resistivity. However, these producers also require such metals as beryllium in the oxide form for insulation components because of the compound's low electrical conductivity. Although the lanthanides' conductive characteristics are not particularly attractive in electronics, they are of great importance to alloy manufacturers producing permanent magnets for automotive and computer applications. Corrosion and wear resistant properties are extremely attractive to a number of end-use industries, particularly in view of the estimate by the United States Bureau of Mines that $10 to $50 billion in losses are experienced by U.S. industry due to equipment corrosion and $100 billion due to equipment wear. The strength of high purity titanium and zirconium make these metals the obvious choice for corrosion and wear resistance particularly in the chemical processing industry, where the ability to maintain integrity in corrosive environments is a must. Heat exchangers, nuclear control rods, and a number of parts in jet engines have benefited greatly from the use of these metals. However, such other specialty metals as beryllium, and the lanthanides also improve the wear or corrosion resistance in various products. For example, a beryllium-copper alloy contact maintains it's spring like character, and does not loose this character after repeated use, which could result in the loss of an electrical contact. Lanthanide, in the form of cerium oxide, is commonly employed in alloys used to produce catalytic converter casings for the purpose of reducing damage by corrosive road salt. In some instances, the catalytic activity of several of the specialty metals assists in the economic production of other materials. Hsikwangshan mine is located at Lengshuijiang city of Hunan Province. It is a stibnite deposit. The orebody is gently inclined; its ore run is about 3 km in length and extends about 1.2 km along the direction of dip. The thickness of the ore body is non-uniform and varies from 1.5 to 20 m. The orebody is mined by room and pillar and cementation filling. The nine levels at the ore top have been mined out. At present, the mining operations are at the eleventh level. The mine ventilation system consist of three main fans which are installed in different shafts and are ventilated in parallel. The main fans can be connected to each other through comprehensive return air drifts. Two of the fans are located underground and the other on the surface. The general configuration of the ventilation system is shown in Figure 1. Because the operating areas are scattered and vary frequently as well, it is difficult to bring about air flow control. If the air flow cannot be varied with the variation of production in time, the air quantities are not sufficient in some areas and are excessive in others. However, it is also a problem to coordinate the three main fans with one another to obtain the optimum economic cost of operation. In order to make the air delivery fit the variation of production continuously to satisfy the ventilation requirement of the working faces and to reduce power consumption, we have made a great effort over five years to install an automatic control system for mine ventilation at the Hsikawangshan mine. The key part of this system is a microcomputer. The whole system consists of a console, which is located at the surface; the circuit network that is provided for signal transmission; air doors and ventilators at the working face; the scale air doors which are installed at the main branch airways; main fans and their speed regulating devices, as well as the sensors used for observing pressure, air quantities, temperature and the concentration of carbon monoxide, etc. This system can continuously telemeter the air quantities and carbon monoxide concentration in the main branch airways, air pressure, air quantities, electric current, the temperature of the bearings of the main fans, etc. According to the production air requirements, the system controls the ventilators or air doors which are located at the working faces and regulates the air quantity in the main branch airways. It can also choose the optimum mode of operation automatically, and regulate the rotating speed of the main fans to guarantee the least total power consumption while satisfying the total air quantity requirements. If abnormality of the observed results is discovered, the audible and flashing light alarm signal starts up automatically. The operating mode of ventilation equipment also feeds back to the control room and displays on the console. The configuration of control the system is shown in Figure 2.

With the growing urban population and the concern for traffic congestion and pollution (emissions control), public transportation is becoming more and more attractive to both city dwellers and managers. To gain access to the central area of the city, the sub- way remains the most viable alternative, despite its higher cost when compared to above ground or elevated transportation systems. There are relatively few regulations and criteria for subway ventilation, particularly when compared with mine ventilation. The main document that provides guidance and general recommendations for subway ventilation and environmental control is the Sub- way Environmental Design Handbook, published in 1976 (2nd edition) by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Re- search and Development. Many of the subway systems in existence today have been designed and built with ventilation features adequate for normal train operation, but their design does not consider stringent criteria for such emergency conditions as a train fire in a tunnel. The National Fire Protection Association's Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit Systems known as NFPA 130 as well as the ASHRAE Handbook - HVAC Applications (1995) provide specific design and operation requirements for subway ventilation systems. Some of the existing, old subways are upgrading their ventilation systems to comply with the new regulations. The ability of a particular ventilation system design to provide adequate ventilation during normal and emergency conditions can be evaluated using computer modeling and simulation techniques. A train fire will cause a sudden change in the tunnel ventilation pattern by adding an unsteady and fast-growing source of heat. The hot air and gasses created by a fire will tend to flow uphill, possibly against the normal flow, producing a 'backlayering effect." To prevent this effect from happening, enough ventilation must be provided and the governing criterion to establish the required airflow is called 'Critical Velocity." Several software packages are available for special applications on tunnel and station ventilation as well as to model the spread of smoke and heat in case of a major tunnel fire, using Computational Fluid Dynamics. This paper presents the current issues in subway ventilation, as shared by the public transit community around the world, together with modern alternative design concepts vis-à-vis the more stringent emerging Fire-Life Safety criteria. Examples of recent studies and ventilation systems design are provided.

INTRODUCTION This article describes the yellow cake drying, packaging and dust collection circuit of the United Nuclear Church Rock Mill. It also describes the layout and floor plan of this section as well as the operation and performance of the various equipment. In order to place the yellow cake section in perspective of the mill as a whole, the mill circuit is described briefly. CHURCH ROCK MILL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Church Rock Mill contains six operating sections shown in Figure 1 in block diagram form. The grinding section consists of a semi-autogenous mill in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone. The slurry is then routed to the leaching tanks. Sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate is added to dissolve the uranium. The pulp is transferred from the leach tanks to the thickeners where the uranium bearing liquid is separated from the barren solids. The uranium bearing solution is then filtered and pumped to the solvent extraction section. [ ] In the solvent extraction section, the uranium bearing aqueous solution is brought into contact with an organic solution composed of kerosene, amine and isodecanol. The amine extracts the uranium from the aqueous solution. This organic solution is then routed to the stripping section, where the uranium is removed from the organic solution with an ammonium sulfate aqueous solution. The pregnant stripping solution now concentrated to 30 gpl U308 is routed to the precipitation tanks where ammonia is added to precipitate the uranium. The yellow cake is then washed in a counter current circuit of two thickeners and one centrifuge to remove impurities, mainly sulfates in order to meet specifications. The centrifuge centrate is routed to the second wash thickener for forward wash. The centrifuge cake at approximately 50% solids consistency is transferred to the yellow cake dryer via a screw conveyor. YELLOW CAKE DRYING, PACKAGING AND DUST COLLECTION Figure 2 shows the flowsheet of the integrated circuit of drying, packaging and dust collection. This section of course centers around the yellow cake dryer as the main equipment. The other main units are the dust collectors for the dryer and packaging respectively, a yellow cake storage bin and the yellow cake packaging facilities. Physically, all of this equipment occupies four floors, beginning at the top floor: 1. Both dust collector fans, the centrifuge and the screw conveyor to transport the yellow cake to the dryer. 2. The dryer, fire box and both dust collectors occupy the third floor. Figure 3 shows the floor plan of the third and fourth floors. 3. The yellow cake storage bin and dryer dust collector sump are located on the second floor. 4. The ground floor houses the loading facilities consisting of two load out ports from the bin to barrels, a roller conveyor loop, drum weighing scale, and change room facilities. Figure 4 shows the ground floor plan. Figure 5 is an elevation view of this section showing the overall equipment arrangement.

The first section of this text delves into construction engineering techniques for successfully completing necessary underground production support projects. I will discuss alternative design concepts, installation practices, materials and material costs, completion time, and necessary labor for individual projects. The emphasis of this section is on describing each project thoroughly and providing a practical guide for the supervisor or engineer. There are four main construction categories for typical underground mining projects. These are: 1) Transportation of men and supply materials. This refers to track and wire installation and roadbed grading and ballasting. 2) Ventilation, composed of overcasts, man doors, regulators, and stoppings. 3) Drainage, including sumps, pumping stations, drainage networks, pumps, and face drainage. 4) Haulage of coal and rock from the face to the outside. The focus here is in the installation of belt lines, belt drives, transfer points, and vibrating bins/feeders. The first section shall fully discuss these four categories in regard to the construction engineer or supervisor designing, building, or improving a system. In addition, special projects such as surge bins, rotary dumps, and underground offices not classified under these categories will be discussed. For manageable purposes, I have limited the installation discussions to one or two approaches I feel have merit. The variation of installations in coal mining is endless, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the reader should not dismiss or restrict his thinking to only the approaches in the text. It serves as a guide only.

INTRODUCTION The impact of modern mining and ore processing on the environment is readily minimised. Our improving knowledge of how pollutants are released to and move through the environment has been accompanied by better expertise in controlling these emissions. For example, when the new mines and smelters were developed in the Viburnum Trend of Missouri a sulfur dioxide pollution problem was quickly recognized and soon controlled. (Wixson 1974) But older operations were not efficiently organized and, despite their smaller scale, they often caused major pollution problems. The British mining fields are among the world's oldest and during the heyday of their operation (approximately 1750-1900) they were worked with- out regard to their environmental impact. The Rivers Pollution Commissioners in the mid-nineteenth century were led to remark that ore dressing was carried on in a slovenly and wasteful manner and the complaints by farmers, that river borne mine wastes were poisoning both their crops and stock, were justified. (Frankland and Mortan, 1984). The Comissioners report led to the 1876 River Pollution Act of Parliament, the first modern environment protection legislation. The development of mining since the last century is characterized by improved regulation of the pollution potential of ore dressing, smelting and refining. The collective memory is unfortunately long and pessimistic. A serious problem arises when old mines are reopened especially if the mine has not been worked for several years since local action groups may soon blame the new owners for causing problems which, in reality, are longstanding and were caused by the use of earlier state of the art technology. It is therefore essential that during the early development stages prior to reopening that comprehensive studies be carried out to identify and quantify local contamination problems. These baseline studies should include surveys on the nature and composition of old tailings disposal areas and other wastes on the mine properties. The composition of air and water should be monitored. Soils are long term sinks for all heavy metals and particular attention should be paid to soils within any city areas near the mine since there are sources of heavy metals in urban areas which are not connected with mining and ore processing. This paper describes some of the results of such a study around a prospective cobalt mine in Southeastern Missouri. It is restricted to the soil survey of forest and agricultural land which took place in and around Fredericktown, Missouri. The city is located at approximately 37° 30' North and 90° 20' West and lies 143 kilometers south of St. Louis. There are several metal mines near Fredericktown, including Mine La Motte, which is the oldest and was first opened in 1720. [Figure 1] is a location map of the area. The survey described here was in connection to the reopening of the Madison Cobalt Mine which was first worked in 1947.

"In our work, the preparation technique of high pure manganese sulfate directly from low-grade rhodochrosite ore (MnCO3) was studied and improved intensively, including the effective leaching process and the short purifying process. Based on the same ion effect, the repeated leaching of rhodochrosite with sulfuric acid is proposed to improve the solubility of Mn2+ and inhibit the dissolution of the impurities Ca2+ and Mg2+. Moreover, the repeated leaching process could make full use of rhodochrosite and lower the dosage of sulfuric acidas raw material. With the aid of theoretical calculation, Ba(OH)2 was chose to adjust the pH value of manganese sulfate solution, and BaF2 to remove Ca2+ and Mg2+completely in the process of purifying. The results demonstrate that the extraction ratio and the recovery ratio of manganese reached 94.3% and 92.7%, respectively, which shows the prospect of industrial application. In manganese sulfate production, the heavy metal impurities have been decreased to less than 1ppm. Moreover, the content of calcium, magnesium and sodium has been decreased to less than 20ppm, which meets the standards of high pure reagent for energy and electronic materials. Our study enlightens an approach to the sustainable application of low-grade rhodochrosite.Introduction Low-grade manganese carbonate ores (=14%) becomes gradually the main resources for exploitation and applications in China according to national mineral resources survey (Tan et al 2004 and Singh et al 2017). Therefore, the electrolytic deposition technique of rhodochrosite faces great challenges including low electrolysis efficiency, high-resource input and high-pollution discharge (Fu et al 2010, Michelis et al 2009, Zhang et al 2013). Recently, more and more amount of manganese series with high or super high purity such as MnSO4, MnO2, Mn3O4 and MnO is demanded with the development of energy and electronic materials. Due to low-grade ores containing multiple elements such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium, conventional preparation of manganese sulphate with high purity from electrolytic product is characterized by long production-cycle and high-energy consumption (Subrat et al 2011, Mpho et al 2013). By contrast, hydrometallurgical method combined with thermal decomposition, hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel processes has been widely studied because of its high efficiency, low consumption and low cost (Chen et al 2008). But the key problem in direct preparation of manganese series form low-grade rhodochrosite is to remove completely the multiple impurities such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium (Liu et al 2014). So it is urgent to develop a sustainable alternative approach with character of short process, high efficiency and environmental friendly."

The key to productive computer usage is system software integration with full compatibility among individual components. The majority of software developers in our industry are still in the process of perfecting individual components. As a result, exchange and validation of data between disciplines becomes an arduous process. We at Morrison Knudsen Engineers, Inc. (MKE) have integrated an entire system, allowing exploration, geology, modeling, mine planning, and operation modules to work as a single, complete system with direct exchange and validation of data. The importance of integration to both developers and users of today's mining soft- ware is becoming increasingly apparent as we, an industry, move toward growth and enhancement of the technology of ore reserve acquisition, evaluation, and management. It is also important to understand the present state of integration and where it is leading US. Not long ago, another industry passed through the same stages we are now setting up for the mining industry. The stereo industry began with a few individual components, the record player, tape recorder, and radio. People were able to play records, listen to the radio and record conversations and music only through microphones on their tape recorders. Soon, one enterprising individual discovered he could tape sound directly from the radio or record player by capturing audio output from the speaker wires. Interfaces and patch cords were developed, providing a means to transfer audio information between components with not only little loss of sound quality, but also the elimination of back- ground noise. The industry took another step forward with the introduction of "integrated" stereo, where the components were packaged in one cabinet with shared resources. This reduced overall cost which paved the way for better quality. Today's stereos are now so well integrated that many of the components share data and resources from the same manufacturer, designed to work together for almost perfect data transfer between any of the components. The result is better sound, convenience, and reduced cost. This is the ultimate goal for integration. Any system development passes through these same steps on the road to total interaction. Initially, the components are designed, tested, and marketed individually, often by separate companies. As the users become familiar with the components, the need arises for an automatic interface between the components. This is necessary to cut down on error during data transfer and to eliminate the redundant work required to enter results from one component into the next component in the system. As a result, interfaces must then be developed to aid in this data transfer. After data transfer is accomplished, the next step is resource sharing. Resource sharing is careful design and engineering by either cooperative, individual manufacturers or one firm taking on the task to produce a single package product. Design and resource sharing leads to lower overall cost, while still providing component capability with options to grow as the user grows. The mining software industry has been working to develop some very high quality component software and has indeed accomplished this task in every aspect of the mining industry. However, realizing the importance of integration, some companies with limited individual resources have started working together to interface their individual components. Other firms have undertaken the project of developing complete, integrated systems.

INTRODUCTION The increasing price of gold and silver over the past 10 years has caused increasing activity in the exploration, evaluation and development of precious metals projects. Many of these deposits are relatively low grade and short lived which makes them economically sensitive to the major project variables such as metal price, capital cost, operating cost and of course, tonnage and grade. These deposits often have a high variability (a coefficient of variation -- o/u -- of 2 to 5) and an intermixing of ore and waste, making ac- curate ore reserve estimation difficult, especially when using traditional estimation techniques. Often, the estimation errors are not the 10-20% that we see in base metal deposits, but the errors in grade and tonnage can be as high as 50%, which can obviously have a very substantial impact on project Recent developments in geostatistics when coupled with a sound geologic under- standing of the deposit can significantly improve reserve estimates of these variable precious metals deposits. Examples will be given of actual deposits where the traditional estimates were significantly different from the mining reality. An attempt will be made to explain the applicable geostatistical tools with a minimum of geostatistical jargon and without complicated formulas. The key to improving the reserve estimates is a clear understanding of the deposit geology and especially the structural controls, the use of local estimation techniques that recognize the intermixing of ore and waste and the effect of selective mining on recoverable reserves, and the use of a global reserve estimation technique to check the results of local estimation. Geologic Controls The vast majority of gold and silver deposits being mined or developed in the western United States would be classified as epithermal deposits. These are formed by hydrothermal fluids (hot water) flowing upward through the rocks and depositing the precious metals as the fluids cool or reach areas of lower pressure or favorable chemical sites. These environments are similar to present day hot springs-type environments with some deposits being clearly associated with surface hot springs such as the Homestake McLaughlin deposit in northern California. These hydrothermal deposits can occur in sedimentary rocks resulting in deposits such as those of the Carlin district or the Jerritt Canyon deposit or the hydrothermal systems can occur in volcanic rocks forming deposits such as Round Mountain, Manhattan or Paradise Peak. The mechanisms of formation were similar in either case with the solution flow controlled by geologic structure and precious metals deposited when the conditions of temperataure, pressure and chemical environment were favorable. The gold and silver hearing solutions travel through permeable faults and fracture systems depositing the metals along these channels. The grades are often highest in the central parts of these conduits (veins) with lower grades in the surrounding rocks. An understanding of the nature, distribution and orientation of these plumbing systems is important to a realistic reserve estimate. The point to be emphasized here is that, good, sound geology in the form of geologic mapping, logging of rotary chip samples and a few carefully logged core holes can signifi- cantly improve an ore reserve estimate.

Though Germany has a very old mining history, her experience in uranium mining only started in the late sixties. Today in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) there are only 5 small mines in the exploration stage, namely Menzenschwand and Müllenbach in the Black Forest and Mähring, Popenreuth and GroBschloppen in northern Bavaria. In all these exploration mines much development is required to define shape and size of ore bodies. Mining engineers, government authorities and environmentalists alike are very much concerned about environmental safeguards and protection of mine workers against radon and its daughter products. Miners are affected by internal and external radioactive exposure. In general the external [f3]- and [µ] -exposures can be considered as small in comparison to the internal exposure and are therefore not discussed in this paper. The internal exposure is caused by the inhalation of radon and its daughter products and is relevant to the lung as the critical organ. The nobelgas radon is inert and does not from compounds with other elements easily. Contrary to the physical half-life of 3,8 days the biological half-life of radon is only 10 to 20 minutes. During the rentention time in the body only approximately 1 % of the long-lived decay products are retained in the system (SCHOGER, 1976). In this connection is it important that the radon resorption as well as the radon secretion varies individually and depends to a large extent on the age of the person (SCHOGER, 1960). RENOUX et al. (1978) have determined that the greatest part of the a(-activity in the air is attached to aerosoles with a diameter of 0,4/14. The radiation exposure of the lung by radon is negligible if compared with the exposure by short-lived decay products. For this reason one has introduced the concept of the potential [o](-energy (P) of the short-lived radon decay products, which means the total [ct]-energy, which is produced when an atom decays in the decay-series down to the long-lived lead-210. [ ] The unity of the potential [o]-energy concentration in the SI-system is 1 j/m3 air. In radiation protection however a specific unit is used namely the working level (WL): [ ] The WL-unit, though internationally recognised has not been introduced officially in Germany. Because of the large amount of tunneling still to be done in the FRG, the various mines departments responsible for safety and health in mining ask searching questions such as: - What are the laws governing radon emanation in tunneling? - Can workers be adeguately protected against radiation hazards? - How should one drive through high grade uranium ore? - What happens if the ventilation system breaks down?

Introduction Grinding ball wear in wet grinding is due to a complex combination of abrasion, corrosion, impact and their interactions. The ball charge is continually falling from a height greater than half of the ball mill's diameter, and contact is made with ore particles or other balls. Abrasive wear occurs through penetration and plowing of media materials from the ball surface by hard ore particles (Gangopadhyay and Moore, 1985). Electrochemical interactions between the abraded and unabraded areas of the ball surfaces, as well as between the grinding media and the minerals, occur in grinding mill pulps (Adam et al., 1986). The wear depends on the media composition, the hardness and the corrosive/abrasive characteristics of the slurry. The marked-ball-wear test method was used to evaluate the performance of grinding media under nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres. Also, the wear mode was studied by observing the grinding media surface under a scanning electron microscope. In general, grinding media of high hardness and high chromium contents were found to have better corrosive wear resistance than those of low hardness and low chromium contents (Jang, Iwasaki and Moore, 1988). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the size distribution and the shape of wear debris in a study of the wear rates and wear behaviors of grinding balls. Experimental Materials The grinding ball alloys used in this investigation were: •martensitic stainless steel (MSS; 0.96% C and 16.2% Cr), •high-carbon, low-alloy steel (HCLA; 0.89% C and 0.53% Cr), and •mild steel (MS; 0.22% C and 0.09% Cr). The mineral used in this study was synthetic corundum, because it was on hand and contained no magnetic impurities. Debris A 203- mm (8-in.) diam porcelain mill was used for grinding the corundum. The mill charge consisted of: •1200 g of 12-grit synthetic corundum, •770 mL of 0.05 mole/L Na2SO4 (61% solids), and •125 steel balls of nominally 25-mm (1-in.) diam. To minimize the debris corrosion, nitrogen was introduced into the mill. Grinding with MSS, HCLA-steel or MS balls was conducted for 2 hr at 51 rpm. The grinding time using the MS ball was varied from 0.5 hr to 2 hr in an attempt to study the debris amount and shape as a function of time. The debris was collected with a hand magnet from the ground slurry and separated from the corundum particles using a Davis magnetic tube. After the separation, the debris particles were immediately washed with acetone and then filtered and dried. Debris size analysis Buckbee-Mears 3-in.-diam, micro-mesh sieves and an electromagnetic shaker were used for determining the debris size distribution. In sieving, isopropyl alcohol was used. The debris fraction collected from each sieve was washed with acetone, dried and then weighed on an analytical balance. [ ]

A typical problem in ventilation networks with multiple fan systems is the possibility of them interacting. Multiple fan systems are no exceptions in complex tunnels, and may also be met in mines where underground fans are installed. When aiming at controlling a multiple fan system in a ventilation network, e.g. with a view to maintaining an acceptable air quality level, yet at minimum power consumption, transient flow conditions frequently occur. Although in most applications these transients are short compared to the time needed to achieve the planned actions on the ventilation, one should, however, keep in mind that it is important to avoid any bouncing effect between different (adjacent or distant) fan systems. Therefore a simulation of the unsteady-state flows could allow us to learn more about the propagation of transients within the network, and their possible secondary effects Among others, one question that often is raised, is to find out in which sequence and at what time schedule each of the fans in a network should e.g. be started up? Another typical problem, into which an unsteady-state simulation could provide some insight is the following: how should the facilities of variable pitch angle and/or changeable RPM of several fans operating in parallel be handled and combined in order to obtain a flow rate that changes gradually from zero to its maximum value i.e. the sum of the individual throughput flows of all the fans. The literature is not very abundant on the topic of simulating transient flows in networks. There is no doubt that numerical models have been developed (Pollak, Christensen, 1987), most of the time for particular applications (Wala, Kim, 1985), (Tanaskovic et al., 1984), (Schultz, Sockel, 1991), etc. The aim of this paper is to present a model that also simulates one-dimensional compressible flows in unsteady-state conditions with, however, the specific intent to handle networks with more than one fan. PROBLEM STATEMENT The mathematical model chosen to describe the unsteady flows in a ventilation network is based on the dynamic and continuity equations applied to each of its airways. The following basic assumptions are made : - the flow in the airway is considered to be one- dimensional, - - the flow is assumed to be fully turbulent, and hence the ATKINSON equation for calculating the friction losses will be applied. Whether this equation remains valid for transient state flows remains an open question. However, this may reasonably be assumed since the interesting flow frequencies are low. A discussion may be found in (Kämpf, 1987) ; - the airways are assumed to have a constant cross- sectional area along their length. If obviously this would not be the case, it is always possible to subdivide the concerned airway into sections for which the previous assumption holds. Applying the basic equations of mass and energy conservation, the flow in each branch may be described by the Euler equation for Newtonian flows.

The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit Project is a 12 ft. 0 in. inside diameter—15 ft. 4 in. excavated diameter tunnel, 8,300 lf. in length. The tunnel is divided in two parts a 4,460 lf. reach to the West and a 3,770 lf. reach to the East separated by a flow regulation structure in the middle. The project was built for the City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) by the Frank Coluccio Construction Company (FCCC) Seattle, Washington under a $22,600,000.00 contract starting in 1998 and completing the contract in 2000 at a total cost to the City of $25,448,000. An increase of 12.6% from the original contract. The tunnel was constructed in an alluvial sediment that ranges up to 1,500 feet thick. The sediment varies from ?ne silty sand and sandy silt (SM-ML) to coarse sand and gravel (GP-GM) with varying quantities of cobbles and boulders. Most of the tunnel was constructed above the water table although one reach of almost 1,000 lf. had water to above the tunnel crown. The contractor, FCCC, used a Lovat 15 ft. 3 in.900 hp shielded TBM with multiple doors (4) of variable opening to excavate and support the tunnel. Tunnel supports were 5 in. WF 16 lbs. per foot at 4 ft. spacing and4 in. Douglas Fir lagging. Tunnel excavation was worked in 10 hour shifts with additional equipment maintenance and repair on the off time. The original Geotechnical Design Summary Report (GDSR) established a baseline for contractual purposes of slightly over 5 boulders (between 12 in. and48 in.) per foot of tunnel. (Table 1) At the pre-bid conference, three test pits were excavated to approximately tunnel invert, one at each end of the project and one in the middle near the flow regulation structure. The test pits encountered a few boulders but did not seem to support the five boulders per foot (varied from one boulder per foot of tunnel to eight b/lf.). Subsequent to the pre-bid meeting and the test pits, BES issued any addenda which changed the baseline boulder quantity in the GDSR to 1.7 boulders per foot of tunnel (varied from0.2 to 3.5 boulders per foot) a reduction of 67% from the original baseline. It is interesting to note the two separate tunnel reaches and how they were evaluated in the GDSR. Originally the Eastern portion of the work was projected at5.08 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 5.30 boulders per foot of tunnel for a variance of less than 5%. In the revised quantity the Eastern portion was projected at 2.01 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 1.42 boulders

The financial implications of environmental liabilities are becoming staggering, particularly for mining companies. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Record of Decision (ROD) list for Superfund mining sites has some pretty hefty financial commitments, such as the $10 million operable unit remedy for the Yak Tunnel at California Gulch (in Colorado) or the $40 to 60 million remediation at Bunker Hill (in Idaho). These costs are driven by the large volume and areal extent associated with historical waste management practices at mining sites. (It's difficult to have a low-cost remedy for a 20-square-mile site.) Unfortunately, there are other ways of generating environmental liabilities besides Superfund, such as non-compliance with Clean Air Act provisions, stormwater permits, or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. In the last 2 years, EPA has increased enforcement in its regulatory programs, which has resulted in increased fines and criminal actions. Leaders in other industries (primarily the chemical and manufacturing industries) are viewing environmental liabilities as a strong motivator to select engineering approaches carefully based on technical, legal, economic, and philosophical perspectives. Industry interest in waste minimization programs comes from the concept that it is economically advantageous not to create waste in the first place. Waste minimization programs typically balance increased front-end capital investment with the minimization of potential long-term environmental liabilities as a way to achieve the lowest total-or life-cycle-cost. A side benefit of waste minimization programs is that they tend to improve overall regulatory compliance. Waste management practices are also becoming philosophical, as evidenced by a May 11, 1992, Business Week article: Companies that incorporate innovative thinking on sustainable development will do more than clean up or prevent their own pollution. They'll make and distribute a product more efficiently than ever, worry about its lifelong environmental impact, plan for recycling, and get their suppliers on the bandwagon. This type of approach will require a new mind-set, new tools, and adjustments throughout the organization. A key aspect of waste minimization or life-cycle waste management programs is the incorporation of environmental costs into economic analyses that compare various waste management alternatives. However, the incorporation of environmental costs into an economic analysis can be more difficult than initially thought. As noted above, new tools-or even a new toolbag-are needed, such as new accounting methods that track and assign the true lifetime environmental costs of a particular product. One piece of the new toolbag is life-cycle cost analysis, which is discussed in this paper. To simplify the discussion, this paper looks at the total costs associated with a given mining site. The concepts presented in this paper, however, can be applied to any mine waste management decision. The ultimate extension of life-cycle costing, as presented in the Business Week article, is to include the potential environmental costs throughout the life of a metal. At this point, I am perplexed on why, let alone how, to include the potential downstream environmental costs (i.e., the costs associated with smelting, manufacturing, use, and recycle or disposal) throughout the life cycle of mined copper, lead, or zinc.

The geophysical aspect of reconnaissance marks the beginning of extensive computer applications supporting development of a mine. Although there are some storage and retrieval applications in geology, and some statistical analysis in geochemistry, large-scale compilation, reduction, and interpretation of mineral resource data are initiated in reconnaissance geophysics. The reasons for this fact are quite simple. Geophysics is oriented toward quantitative evaluation of areas of interest, and methods of data collection are automated to the extent that large amounts of analog and digital information are recorded. The large volume of data must be interpreted in a reasonable time. Furthermore, some modeling problems involving complex numerical solutions could not be attempted without the computer. Therefore, the computer is essential to the success of an exploration project using geophysics. For example, aeromagnetics is a common technique for reconnaissance examination of areas associated with sulfide systems and porphyry deposits. An area covering 161 X 161 km (100 X 100 miles) may be flown with a 1.6-km (1-mile) line spacing yielding 10,000 line miles (16,093 km) of data. If only 10 measurements are recorded per mile, 100,000 data points, including location and magnetic field intensity, must be reduced and stored for quantitative interpretation. Computer applications often represent a significant investment in manpower and hardware. It is desirable, therefore, to initiate an engineering approach to the application of computers to geophysics. By this it is meant that computer programs and systems should be formulated, developed, and implemented in a disciplined manner such that their usage is dependent only on the application and not on the individual doing the programming. In other words, computer application, development, and usage should evolve beyond the personal gadget phase to an important applied technology. Geophysics has evolved over the past two decades in a course parallel to computer hardware development. During the sixties, the computer became large enough and fast enough that complex models required by geophysics could be solved. Automation also relieved the geophysicist from routine manual calculations. During the seventies, computing power in¬creased and applications expanded from two-dimensional problems to three-dimensional modeling. Moving into the eighties, as computer hardware costs will significantly decrease, the major expense of computing will be the manpower required to develop, implement, and use an application; therefore, improved programming techniques and applications software engineering methods will be used to optimize and preserve this investment. This chapter presents a general overview of computer methods in geophysical reconnaissance; it is divided into two parts: geophysical methodology and software engineering.

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is limited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized. This article outlines what typical baseline hydrogeologic data are needed and describes how it can be easily obtained during exploration drilling. Introduction Major engineering and environmental ground water parameters can be identified early in a project by using, drill hole data obtained from a mineral exploration program, designed by the mine geologist and hydrogeologist. Most importantly, data obtained in the exploration drilling program can be used to design a logical, defensible, and cost-effective baseline ground water data reconnaissance and monitor well program, which would be required for mine design and ultimately for mine permit approval. Drilling Where possible, exploration drill holes should be drilled with conventional rotary drilling equipment using air or, if necessary, water as the drilling fluid. Rotary air or water drilling generally allow good delineation of the first major saturated or water-bearing zone. If mud must be used during drilling, distinct hydrogeologic zones can still be defined, although the task may be considerably more difficult. Water Levels Static water levels can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes at specific depths while additional boreholes are drilled. Such measurements should not, however, be conducted until the hole has been developed with air (no water) and has stabilized at each of the depths to be measured. Such water-level information can be particularly useful when more than one aquifer exists. Where mine development is eminent, the hydrogeologist should install 50-100 mm (2-4 in.) diameter PVC casing in select drill holes. The PVC should be slotted, gravel packed, and properly sealed so additional hydrogeologic data can be collected for specific hydrogeologic zones at a later date. Such data could include water level information, permeability estimates based on injection and /or pumping tests, and water quality data. Where casing is not installed in drill holes, or when the drill holes are abandoned, the holes should be properly grouted and back-filled to the ground surface to prevent potential future ground water contamination. Monitoring Air Lift Water Production Estimates of the relative production from various water-bearing strata can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes. If ground water is encountered, its air lift (ground water flow) production can be measured at distinct intervals using a surface water flow measuring device, such as a portable Parshall
