Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor, and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research that was conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

The techno-economic and social benefits of cemented paste backfill (CPB) resulted in its wide acceptance by the mining industry. The Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) remains the key binder but to diminish its economical constraints, suitability of alternate binders has been examined worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of partial replacement of OPC with fly ash on the CPB’s strength and to determine the most optimal mix to achieve the required strength (1 MPa at 28 days of curing) at the most cost-effective way using the Bayesian network (BN). The CPB mixes were prepared at 72 wt.% solid concentration with mill tailings (87–91%), OPC (6–13%), and fly ash (0–4%), and instantly after mixing, fresh (slump, bleeding, density) CPB properties were measured. The strength was tested at 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of curing and initially analysed through traditional model. The traditional models follow the aleatory principle and are considered not appropriate for geotechnical engineering. Hence, the BN model was developed and tested. The reliability of two classifiers in learning model structure was compared which gives Naïve Bayes as the highest reliable tool. The CPB’s strength is most sensitive to the OPC content. The most consistent mix(s) is mill tailings: 87–88%, OPC: 9–11%, fly ash: 1–4%. Adding fly ash at 89–91wt% mill tailings possesses high failure probability of the CPB. The collinearity test indicates that the fines percentage and chemical composition of CPB’s ingredients are highly correlated with its slump, bleeding, and strength development.

This article is a review of previous discussions about underground mining method selection and classification with the purpose to clearly define and classify the two groups of variables (indicators) involved in the mining selection process: key deposit indicators (KDIs) and key mining method indicators (KMIs). This paper provides a simple and clear approach for the classification and selection of a feasible underground mining method based on a predetermined set of favorable deposit characteristics, which are defined as key deposit indictors (KDIs). This article also gives a summary of the key advantages and disadvantages associated with every underground mining method based on their key mining indicators (KMIs). The selection method given in this paper is based on defining field KDIs and comparing them to the KDIs that are favorable to every considered mining method. By cross validating a matrix of favorable KDIs, the paper presents a simple approach to rank several underground mining methods using a scale from favorable to less favorable accordingly to the ore deposit characteristics (KDIs). KMIs are used to further complement KDI rankings by analyzing every method’s KMI performance based on the expected productivity of the mining operation being considered. To further assist the reader through the selection process, this paper gives basic sketches representing each of the primary underground mining methods discussed in this paper. Each method is given using the same 3D isometric view as spatial reference to assist the reader with visual interpretation and comparison between methods.

An innovative sprayable waterproofing membrane in combination with the traditional Nordic method of waterproofing with polyethylene foam sheets was used for the waterproofing of the tunnel. The sprayable membrane was integrated in the final sprayed concrete lining in a sandwich structure, hence constituting a composite water-proof lining based on sprayed concrete. The spray able membrane was applied in areas with small to moderate water ingresses, making up approximately 50% of the total area requiring waterproofing in the tunnel. State-of-the-art application technology with a computerized spraying robot was used. A consistent application of the required thickness at a high speed was thereby achieved.

There are many examples, historical and recent, from the underground coal mining industry where during emergency response the response and ultimately the outcomes, could have been significantly improved if adequate systems had been in place for the collection and management of relevant information preceding the incident, the acquisition of information during the incident and the use of the information for risk mitigation and decision making purposes. The subject and process of knowledge management is possibly the most critical for would be rescuers of endangered coal mine workers, as it has been demonstrated at numerous coal mine incidents that a lack of or mismanagement of crucial information can be fatal for both the rescuer and/or the endangered coal mine worker. This paper will underline the scope and importance of robust knowledge management systems for emergency response within the underground coal mining industry and the process by which it is being achieved within the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the NSW Mines Rescue Service.

OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

Tunnel and shaft plugs have been designed to assist in construction of new and rehabilitation of existing tunnels and shafts. Tunnel plugs have been used to provide construction access for side by side tunnels, separation of raw and treated water, and to allow operation of one tunnel during construction of a nearby tunnel. Shaft plugs have been used to seal up surface openings to tunnels and to prevent seepage of water to the surface through adjacent tunnels or shafts. The design construction details of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided. Typical examples of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided.

An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). Recent antipollution legislation for the control of mine tailings and waste-water has required an increasing number of tailings ponds. Many of these new waste-retention ponds are being constructed in congested locations, or the older ponds have reached such a size that--if failure occurs--they pose a threat to human life and public property. Although the typical tailings-disposal embankment represents--to the casual-, observer or the economy-minded mine official--a rather ugly but benign and stable pile of waste, they are in fact an extremely sensitive structural mass, retained behind the frailest of dikes. Failure of the waste mass requires only a minor change in water retention or weather conditions, erosion or piping of the ground strata, shifts in load or slight earth tremors. When failures occur, the results can be disastrous. In the U.S., we have been fortunate that, so far, pond failures have not caused loss of life. Thus, failures in this country have attracted little public attention. Present tailings-pond construction methods used by the mining industry require the barest money investment, and little engineering effort. Unfortunately, this superficial approach may increase short-term profits, but the practice may be conducive to the construction of needlessly weak structures. In coming years many of these designs will probaly become corporate liabilities. A typical pond is portrayed in Figure IA. This particular pond in Arizona is 1 mile long and 3/4 mile wide. The Standley Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Colorado included the complete replacement of the outlet works. This required two 1.8m (6 ft) diameter microtunneled wet lake taps, 380m and 186m (1246 ft and 636 ft) long, a permanent valve shaft 12.2m(40 ft) wide and 32m (105 ft) deep, and a 3.5m (11.5 ft) diameter (962 foot long) outlet tunnel driven with a roadheader. The tunnels were driven in low-strength, expansive, and slickensided claystone. The paper addresses the site investigation, shaft construction, roadheader performance, shotcrete placement, tunnel convergence, long distance microtunneling, and wet lake taps.

Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey's test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine is a large panel caving molybdenum mine located about 43 miles west of Denver, Colorado. Three Joy M120-72-880 fans are installed in parallel on the No. 1 exhaust shaft. Throughout the mine’s history, ventilation changes such as the completion of the No. 5 exhaust shaft have decreased the utilization of these fans. To optimize fan performance they have been run with the full complement of 16 blades, down to as few as four blades. Since the completion of ventilation upgrades associated with the Henderson 2000 project, one surface fan has been operated under normal conditions with 10 or 12 blades. With the completion of a new network model of the Henderson ventilation system, a tool was built to develop fan curves for possible future fan configurations and predict future fan performance. This paper describes the tool and its use at Henderson.

In the mid-1970?s, the market value of tangible assets of S&P 500 companies far outstripped the value of intangible assets, including intellectual property (e.g., 83% tangible assets v. 17% intangible assets).1 By 2005, the picture was quite different. By that time and continuing to 2010, S&P 500 companies? market value of intangibles was about 80%, with tangible assets accounting for only 16% of market value.2 This swing highlights the importance in today?s world of understanding intellectual property rights and varying strategies and options for protecting them. This paper discusses intellectual property rights particularly patents and trade secrets, specifically: 1) types of intellectual property; 2) choosing the mode of intellectual property protection; 3) obtaining patent protection; and 4) using patents as a sword versus a shield.

"In 2014, the estimated value of total mine production of nonfuel minerals in the United States increased. The quantity of production increased for most mineral commodities mined in the United States, as did prices. Notable exceptions were the declines in prices for most precious metals. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Following the reduction in construction activity associated with the 2008- 2009 recession that continued through 2011, the construction industry continued to expand in 2014, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum, mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction. Other segments of the nonfuel minerals industries increased as well. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those for industrial mineral production (Table 1).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals. Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. The materials with the highest unit values, usually metals, tend to have very low production rates compared with those of many low-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the minerals industry in general, the value of production is used rather than tonnage produced. Although the value of metals and industrial minerals mined in the United States are similar, if tonnages are compared, construction aggregates dominate, dwarfing the production of all other minerals combined.Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of nonfuel mineral raw materials, including metals and industrial minerals, produced at mines in the United States in 2014 was $77.6 billion, a 3.5-percent increase from $75 billion in 2013 (Table 2). Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $15 billion (Fig. 2). Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to process mineral materials worth $697 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $41 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added estimated to be $2,530 billion in 2014.In the United States in 2014, mine production of each of 14 mineral commodities was worth more than $1 billion. These were, in decreasing order of value, crushed stone, copper, gold, cement, construction sand and gravel, iron ore (shipped), industrial sand and gravel, molybdenum concentrates, phosphate rock, lime, salt, zinc, soda ash and clays (all types)."

A mine fire is one of the most challenging safety issues facing a mine operator and can occur at any location underground. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Twentymile Coal Mine, CO, conducted in-mine experiments to determine the capability of high-expansion foam for addressing underground fires. The tests were conducted in sloping entries with high-capacity diesel-powered foam generators. The following results were observed: a well-designed, maintained and properly operated high-expansion foam generator can propagate a foam plug hundreds of feet in steep upward-sloping (20%) multiple entries against a ventilation pressure; stoppings and partitions designed to contain the foam plug in upward-sloping entries must be substantially constructed; and the predicted quantity of foam concentrate can be significantly less than the actual amount used, due to foam losses, such as bubble breakage on dry surfaces. This paper describes the production of high-expansion firefighting foam and discusses the in-mine experimental tests and results.
