Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.

INTRODUCTION Nevada Goldfields began underground mining development at the Kingston Project in September, 1986, followed by mill start-up in March, 1987. The first gold pour in April followed three years of preparatory work in establishing a North American operational base for the production of precious metals by Golconda Minerals N.L., an Australian mining firm. GENERAL CORPORATE BACKGROUND The Golconda Group of companies was established in early 1983 in Australia. It began operations by successfully retreating tailings at several old gold mining sites throughout Australia. With the limited reserves available for tailings retreatment, Golconda began to look toward the future by conducting a gold exploration program in Australia. However, the continued high price of gold in Australia had limited the possibilities of acquiring good properties at a reasonable cost and consideration was given to looking outside Australia in addition to Golconda's domestic exploration activities. North America was favored because of the proven potential for substantial gold deposits, the established infrastructure which would allow for rapid and cost-effective development of new projects and the advantages of similar political and economic climates. In mid-1984, Golconda established an office in California and began an extensive study of over 100 prospects throughout the United States. Two prospects were identified as a result of this study whch showed merit; one was located at Empire, Colorado and the other at Aurora, Nevada. Negotiations were then successfully undertaken to acquire these two properties. Golconda's U.S. offices were moved to Reno, Nevada in early 1985 to facilitate management of its projects. To operate and manage these projects, a small Canadian company listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, Cannon Minerals, was acquired by Golconda and renamed Nevada Goldfields Corporation. The current structure of the company is shown below in Figure 1. A private placement of 2,575,000 shares of common stock at US54.00 per share was arranged by Jacksons Limited of Australia in association with W.I. Carr (U.K.) Limited of London. This placement resulted in US510.3 million being available in May, 1986 for the acquisition and initial development of the Aurora and Empire projects. While the financing was underway, project planning commenced on both the Aurora and Empire projects. Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

This work discusses the sulfur dioxide (SO2) leaching of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores to selectively recover manganese (Mn) as manganese sulfate (MnSO4), followed by electrowinning of the purified MnSO4 to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). The effects of the leaching process parameters on Mn recovery were studied, and the leaching duration and SO2 flow rate were found to have significant effects. Under the optimum conditions derived for grade 1 ore (with total Mn content of approximately 17.16 percent), the specific SO2 requirement (SSR) — that is, the SO2 flow rate per gram of Mn in the leach slurry — was calculated to be 0.014 L/min. At the SO2 flow rate calculated using SSR for grade 2 ore (with total Mn content of approximately 26.29 percent), a Mn recovery rate of 94 percent was realized. Electrowinning of the purified MnSO4 generated after leaching resulted in EMD with 88.01 percent purity and a γ structure.

During the last 28 years, I have had the very challenging and rewarding experience of working as an engineering professional in a large multinational company, both as a manager of engineers and engineering projects as well as an inventor and generator of new engineering processes and products. Due to the diversified geographic and tech¬nical nature of my employer's business, my responsibilities have taken me all over the world. This has included interactions with people in different industries including minerals, coal, chemicals, petroleum, pulp and paper, agriculture and pharmaceuticals. As diverse as my experience may seem, it has always amazed me how common the basic underlying technology and economic trends are that shape the working environment that any given engineer in any given geographic loca¬tion will experience. I would like to discuss the industrial evolution from micro to macro engineering. One of the basic truths behind how industry must and will operate is "change," including: • the creation of conditions for change, • the anticipation of change, • the resistance to change, • the rewards that being part of a change can bring and • the destruction that change can bring to the unprepared. This fact was well stated by Heractitus around 500 BC.: "There is nothing permanent except change." This simple truth has been valid since the dawn of time and, if anything, is accelerating in nature every decade.

"The paper describes in general the objectives, goals as well as theoretical background of "METSI"-project proposal submitted to German BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). The METSI project is a starting point for technology and know-how transfer of German water management and water treatment technologies to South African Mining industry. "METSI" is Setswana, one of the eleven official languages in South Africa, and means "water". It stands also for "Management System for the Implementation of Environmentally Sound Water Supply Technologies in South African Mining Areas with Involvement of all Relevant Stakeholders". The project focuses on development, design and implementation of mathematical models that consolidate and evaluate existing data and generate substantiated projections of "water" amount and quality. METSI covers a wide range of scientific, technical, social as well as economic questions related to "water in mining"."

Introduction The impact of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and their state counterparts underscore the intention of the nation's lawmakers to reduce the risk from hazardous substance to American society. The promises and requirements embodied in these laws, together with their prospects for liability, will continue to have a very substantial impact on decision making in the mining industry. These laws present the prospects for staggering liabilities, often of an unquantifiable nature in terms of time and amount. It is therefore necessary to keep them in clear focus. This is particularly true in light of President Reagan's signing into law the Superfund amendments on Oct. 17, 1986, and in light of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) major policy pronouncement of July 3, 1986, regarding solid wastes from extraction of ores and minerals. This article examines the general trends as well as the specific provisions of these laws in an effort to assess the prospects of liability for the mining industry of releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Hazardous substances vs. hazardous wastes The distinction between the terms "hazardous substances" and "hazardous wastes" is important to appreciate for the purposes of assessing the potential for liability for a mining operation. Hazardous substance is a term that appears in and is defined in the Superfund Act. In Superfund, it is defined by reference to other substances that have been declared to be hazardous under other federal environmental statutes, such as RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. Hazardous waste is a term that is less all-encompassing than hazardous substance, as that term is defined by RCRA. Hazardous substances do not need to be wastes to be considered hazardous for the purpose of Superfund liability. A "release" of a hazardous substance into the environment can bring about potential liability under Superfund. Many mining wastes, even though they are not considered hazardous wastes by EPA under RCRA, have been determined by that agency to be capable of bringing about liability under Superfund if they contain chemical substances, such as the heavy metals copper, lead, mercury, zinc, silver, and others. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the mining industry to be able to answer whether one has hazardous waste at a mining site. That question only goes partway in addressing the potential for liability. The next question is, do one's solid or liquid mining wastes contain hazardous substances that could bring about liability under Superfund? Superfund 1980 law: A review Some provisions of Superfund as it existed before its recent amendments must be considered. The law provides that the owners and operators of mining sites, together with those who transport hazardous substances to such sites, can be held jointly and severally liable for the cost of cleaning up the site. The concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of cleanup. The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. In the Preliminary Engineering stage, 30 existing tunnels were assessed and 28 were found to need clearance improvements to allow the use of double stack trains. Alternative tunnel enlargement methods were developed to achieve the desired clearance improvements, while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing disruption to train traffic. This paper summarizes the geometric and condition investigations of the existing tunnels, as well as describes the preferred methodologies to achieve the desired clearance. The clearance improvements will be implemented beginning in the summer of 2007.

Introduction The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track" or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.3 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV, Pre-Feasibility Planning Proper early planning and identification of priority items were necessary to expedite project progress. On April 1, 1978, HIMCO leased the rights to the Borealis prospect and initiated exploration activities almost immediately. Since Borealis was showing excellent potential for mine development, an effort to clear the way environmentally was initiated during the summer of 1979. With the Borealis properties located within the Toiyabe National Forest, the US Forest Service (USFS) was recognized as the "lead" or respon¬sible agency for addressing the environmental issues. Early scoping of the environmental issues by both HIMCO and the USFS allowed HIMCO to take the initiative and address two potentially critical issues-archaeological and biological. Third party consultants, agreed upon by HIMCO and the USFS, were contracted to conduct archaeological and biological surveys. Desert Research Institute of Reno, NV, provided archaeological services, and JFL & Associates of Boulder, CO, provided biological services. These efforts began in the fall of 1979 and continued through the summer of 1980. Conservative Design Criteria By adoption of conservation design criteria, flowsheets and processing data required for detail engineering were firmly established with a minimum of impact on schedule. On Oct. 21, 1980, HIMCO formally initiated a feasibility study to evaluate the Borealis project. Four organizations were contracted for particular scopes of work: • John T. Boyd Co.: Ore reserve estimation, preliminary mine plan, and mine capital and operating cost estimation. • Bechtel Civil and Minerals: Conceptual engineering, processing capital and operating cost estimation. • Hazen Research Inc.: Metallurgical testing. • Sierra Pacific Power: Cost estimation for power supply. Metallurgical testing and conceptual engineering of both heap and agitation leach flowsheets were investigated concurrently. Numerous economic evaluations were conducted for both heap and agitation leaching at varying production capacities. The results indicated a heap leaching flowsheet treating 454 kt/y (500,000 stpy) yielded the best economics and was compatible with the "fast-track" development goal. Conservative design criteria was established to provide operating flexibility and ensure plant productivities. A summary of major design criteria is presented in Table 1. HIMCO assembled the results of the studies of the various consultants along with internally generated studies to produce the feasibility document. The decision to supply 100% equity by HIMCO rather than arrange project financing help to expedite the project. Cooperation Between HIMCO and Regulatory Agencies With cooperation and mutual trust established between HIMCO and regulatory agencies, the time required for environmental permitting was streamlined as much as practical. To expedite the required construction permits, HIMCO proposed to the USFS that HIMCO fund the total cost of an Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) and that issues be addressed at the technical level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The previous studies on the critical issues of archaeology and biology provided HIMCO with the information to satisfy the proposed approach. Houston International Minerals and the USFS agreed to have Environmental Research and Technology (ERT) of Fort Collins, CO, prepare a draft EAR for the USFS.

"By the time the latest expansion of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) system, known locally as Metro and which opened in 1976, is completed in 2020, the system will serve 97 stations and operate on 188 km (117 miles) of track on six interconnecting lines. Metro provides a critical transportation link to a population of approximately six million people within a 3,900-km2 (1,500-sq-mile) Washington Metropolitan area and has allowed job growth to expand to all corners of the region. In the 1950s and 1960s, when the system was first conceived and construction began, most jobs were centered in downtown Washington, and most of the workforce commuted by bus or car. Today, transit-oriented development has increased residential, commercial and government facilities near most of the existing 91 stations increasing the importance of the Metro system as a critical transportation link for the region. According to recent American Public Transportation Association (APTA) data, Metro is the second busiest transit system in the United States (after New York City’s transit system).During the nearly 50 years of construction on the Washington Metro system, technology improvements and lessons learned from the global tunneling industry were implemented. Portions of this background and history have been adapted from other work by the authors Roach et al. (2017) and expanded for use herein. For soil tunnels, these improvements included the change from a “two-pass” tunnel lining with a typical initial lining of steel ribs with wood lagging or segmental precast lining erected within the tunnel shield followed by a final lining of cast-in-place concrete to a one-pass lining system of pre-cast concrete gasketed segmental lining. Soil tunnels were originally excavated using open-face tunnel shields, but changed over time. By the late 1980s, tunneling using closed, pressurizedface tunnel boring machines (TBMs) using a one-pass tunnel lining consisting of segmental precast concrete permitted tunneling in a wider range of soil conditions with much less risk of damaging overlying utilities or structures, greater safety for tunnel construction personnel and without the need to dewater the soils. However, due to concerns about conditioning clays with earth pressure balance (EPB) TBMs, open face machines were still favored by contractors for their better advance rates, lower cost and ability to deal with boulders that were occasionally encountered in the Coastal Plain Terrace Deposits."

It highlights the significance of borehole sealing technology for efficient gas drainage. The study introduces a new inorganic retarding sealing material and investigates its properties, including stability, thermal stability, fluidity, and thixotropy. The material's diffusion performance in cracks is tested using a self-designed system. Field tests in a coal mine demonstrate the material's effectiveness in improving borehole sealing compared to traditional materials.

The mine manager in today's environment is faced with a wide variety of problems and challenges which must be addressed if efficient and profitable operations are to be achieved. Expansion of operations has, in many instances, resulted in inexperienced work crews, face supervisors, and superintendents. The complexities of a mining system preclude rapid movement through the learning curve for moat personnel. The management of production suffers both from this inexperience and the lack of standard procedures and methods for planning, schedul ing and analyzing production systems. The lack of visibility of information, as well as of the operations themselves, due to their remoteness, adds to the problem of production management.

The 2005 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention continued the upbeat mood found in 2004. The global mining industry is booming due to higher commodity prices in nearly every sector. Other factors include low commodity inventories, China’s strong resource demands, the weak U.S. dollar, the very strong Euro, global uncertainties, an almost overripe investment climate for natural resources and the highest mining exploration budgets in seven years. Even unglamorous commodities, like iron, uranium and zinc, received copious attention in talks, the investors’ exchange, the core shack and in certain hospitality suites. The following impressions were gathered at the convention and enhanced by conference handouts and some abstracts that are available on the PDAC’s Web site, www.pdac.ca. At least 119 papers were presented, almost twice last year’s number.

Lime is one of the most extensively used chemicals in industry. Other than sulfuric acid, it is used in greater quantities than any other man-made industrial chemical. In 1974 there were 20,368,000 tons of lime used in the United States, which amounts to approximately 190 pounds for each man, woman and child in our nation. Lime also is perhaps the most diversely used of any industrial chemical. It is used in such areas as pharmaceutical, chemical, steel making, glass making, production of copper and aluminum, sugar refining, agriculture, construction, ecological endeavors, potable water treatment and sanitation. Figure I lists the major uses of lime for 1974, which is the latest year for which this data is available. The impact of the use of lime for ecological reasons did not show up to any appreciable extent in 1974, but we expect this to be a significant factor within the next few years. Fortunately, in the United States and also in most of the world, there are many deposits of high quality limestone available for the production of hood quality lime. For this discussion, we will assure that a limestone of a suitable quality and size consist will be available in a storage bin or stockpile near the kiln. Quality requirements for the lime product will be covered. We also will give a brief description of the three most popular types of lime calcining systems, how they function, and expected lime product quality from each of these. Commercial fuels and major accessory equipment will be discussed briefly.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study adsorption of sulfide collectors such as modified thionocarbamates and thioureas, xanthate, dithiophosphate, and dithiophosphinate, on galena, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, and quartz under flotation related conditions. In the case of the adsorption of modified thiourea on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and Cu-activated quartz, and of dithiophosphinate on galena, SIMS measurements have provided direct evidence for the presence of metal-collector (1:1) complexes on surfaces. In the other systems, only the collector molecular ion and its fragments were detected. The distribution of adsorbed species on the surfaces was obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. On chalcopyrite, only the copper-collector complex was found; there was no evidence for iron-collector complex. In the case of quartz, adsorption of selective collectors was observed only after activation by copper ions.

There has been an ongoing debate on how to transform engineering education to better prepare students for today`s professional world that is characterized by increasingly complex problems and challenges that engineers are tasked with upon entering the industry. Within the conceive–design–implement–operate (CDIO) framework, entrepreneurship education presents a valuable pedagogical approach to foster the necessary skills of the students through integrated, hands-on, active learning experiences. While numerous publications have addressed possibilities of how experiential, problem-based, project-based and active learning can be integrated into engineering curriculum, there has been hardly any attention on mining engineering with respect to adopting this approach. This paper will address the possibilities of integrating entrepreneurship education into mining engineering programs in particular. This paper will enhance and foster discussion among academics from mining engineering on how to integrate elements of entrepreneurship education on a course, program and departmental level to infuse value creation experiences across the curriculum.

Various attempts have been made to build leadership and management expertise with little success. There are numerous reasons these attempts have failed. Three reasons, along with suggested solutions, will be explored: 1) lack of ownership of the development process by those affected; 2) lack of congruence of the development process used and the business strategies of the organization; and 3) a comprehensive development process. We will discuss a development model applied inside a smelter and refining complex over one year involving all levels of management. The process was credited with helping to substantially reduce cost and enable breakthroughs in production, quality and safety results.
