In most open pit operations mining porphyry type deposits, production planning rests on an are reserve inventory block file which is derived from diamond drill hole data. With such a practice, the way by which block values are generated is critical and in the recent years many studies deal with the comparison of different estimation methods for block grades (Mueller, E. (1), Knudsen et al (2) (3), Barnes, (4), Williamson and Mueller (5). Typically in such studies, one selects a bench or a group of benches where there is a "sufficient" number of blast holes (BH) with assay values in each of the blocks (generally 30.5 x 30.5 m (100 x 100 ft) or 15.2 x15.2 m (50 x50 ft). Then the arithmetic mean of the BH values in each block is computed and it is assumed to represent the real block grade against which different estimated values are compared. However it is sometimes observed that the variation of these BH values within a block is high and that their arithmetic average may significantly differ from the real average grade of the block (Barnes (4). The problem of the precision of the mean BH grade in a block has been examined by Williamson and Langlois (6) in an experimental way. They strove to find a better estimate of the average block grade than the mean BH grade but their results were not conclusive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the same problem within the frame of geostatistical models (David (7). Besides practical results obtained with these models, two general points are emphasized and illustrated in the text. First, "good results" are obtained if "good geostatistics" is done (David et al (8).

There is no startling revelation to the fact that the mining industry as a whole is generally moving toward the use of larger equipment to process ores in quantities far greater than what was even considered a decade ago. Trucks and shovels have led the way in extra large machines and many other manufacturers have followed suit in the development of so-called "supers" in their line of equipment. In order to keep pace with the industry, crusher manufacturers have also enlarged the size of their equipment. There is now on the market, a Gyratory crusher capable of accepting a 72" diameter piece of ore. Primary jaw crushers have also increased in size. It is inevitable, therefore, that larger secondary cone crushers would also be required to complement the other equipment used to process these large quantities of ore. This super-size secondary cone crusher is the SYMONS 10 Ft. Cone Crusher. Until 1973, the largest cone crusher built was the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty crusher, which is currently used in the majority of the mining operations throughout the world. The 10 Ft. crusher, when compared to the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty Crusher, is approximately 1-1/2 times larger in physical dimensions; three times heavier; will accept a maximum feed size which is approximately twice as large; and will crush at approximately 2-1/4 times the rate of the 7 Ft. machine at identical closed side settings. It will be the largest cone crusher built in the world. At the present time, Rexnord's Nordberg Machinery Group has accepted an order for two 10 Ft. Standard cone crushers to be delivered to an iron ore mine in South Africa in early 1975.

Longwall coal mine operators in the U.S. are required to ventilate multipanel longwall districts, but may have little or no knowledge about what happens to the ventilation air between the inlet evaluation points (IEPs), bleeder evaluation points (BEPs) and bleeder fans. The effectiveness of bleeder performance can directly influence the ability of a ventilation system to remove and dilute coal bed methane emissions. U.S. coal mining stakeholders have acknowledged their belief that the T-junction split at the longwall face tailgate corner is very important in controlling the distribution of ventilation air. To obtain direct measurements of bleeder performance, a tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), was released into the ventilation air stream on active and inactive longwall panels. Testing was performed on multiple longwall panels that included various phases of longwall development and variable path lengths of ventilation air transport to bleeder fan installations. Changes in the T-junction ventilation air distribution over the life of a longwall panel, and its variable effect on panel ventilation airflow are discussed. These findings will assess the effectiveness of commonly applied ventilation strategies for improving air distribution and ventilation controls to meet statutory requirements.

Petro-diesel is a common collector for fine coal froth flotation but partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DRO. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAHs were measured in tailings and concentrate streams, and coal recovery and ash rejection were tracked. Results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher DRO than tailing waters, and DRO in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. DRO again appeared to be limited to the WSF and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DRO. Results indicate optimal flotation performance should generally coincide with minimal DRO partitioning to process waters. Under typical operating conditions residual DRO should not present an environmental concern; however, conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

The Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Site (Site) is a former uranium-ore processing facility near Moab, Utah, where production ended in 1984. The United States Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) is responsible for remediating the site to meet 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 192 standards promulgated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the authority of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Tailings from the former mill were stored in an unlined impoundment (tailings pile), totaling 16 million tons of waste material. Surface cleanup has been ongoing since 2009 and consists of removal and transport of tailings via rail to an off-site disposal facility in Crescent Junction, Utah, with an estimated completion date around 2029. Gravity-driven migration of tailings fluids and recharge through the tailings pile and former on-site ore storage areas in the northeastern part of the site led to contamination of site soil and groundwater. The primary contaminant of concern is ammonia, which was present in fluids used in the milling process (DOE 2003). Uranium is a contaminant of potential concern. An interim groundwater remedy is currently in place that utilizes a system of extraction and injection wells to limit discharge of contaminated groundwater into the nearby Colorado River. Exceedance of surface water standards for ammonia are a principal concern due to potential endangered species fish habitat areas along the Colorado River adjacent to the Site. When necessary, surface water diversion is used to lower surface water ammonia concentrations when suitable habitats develop for endangered young-of-year fish. Once surface cleanup concludes and the tailings pile is removed, a formal groundwater remedy must be selected and documented in a Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP). Under Title 1 of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act, natural flushing (i.e., monitored natural attenuation), may be selected as the groundwater remedy if it can be demonstrated that the remedy will achieve groundwater standards within 100 years. The 40 CFR 192 groundwater standard for uranium is 44 micrograms per liter (μg/L), and the target groundwater concentration of ammonia based on adverse effects on local fish species is 3 milligrams per liter (mg/L). A collaboration with Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. (Geosyntec), the Moab UMTRA Project team, the DOE Office of Legacy Management, the DOE-EM, and the Network of National Laboratories for Environmental Management and Stewardship was held in 2022 with the goal to generate actionable recommendations to develop a GCAP for the Site. The primary recommendation was development of a groundwater fate and transport model to predict the remedial timeframe under various groundwater remedies. This paper presents the results of soil and groundwater sampling, geochemical modelling, and laboratory column and batch reactor testing that will be used to parameterize a numerical model for estimating the remedial timeframe under various scenarios, including natural flushing.

An ilmenite concentrate was reduced in the solid state with carbon under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1000oC and 1400oC. The ilmenite concentrate and 50% excess carbon were reacted to achieve the highest attainable degree of reduction at each temperature and the reaction products were subjected to a series of analytical work by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM ( EDS) analysis. The ilmenite remained unaltered at 1000oC and had a slight change in its composition at 1050oC. A secondary oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was detectable at 12% reduction at 1100oC. The reduction of TixOy took place in a sequence changing the y/x ratio from 2.0 to a value less than 1.0 at 84% reduction at 1400oC. Metallic phase consisted of Fe and C initially and started to include Ti at the later stages. Complete reduction of TixOy to metallic Ti was not possible at these temperatures.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a ventilation assessment for a recently established underground room-and-pillar stone mine implementing split-mine ventilation. The primary objective was to examine the impact of the length of the in-place stone stoppings on face ventilation efficiency. These stone stoppings serve to separate the intake and exhaust entries and align with the mining direction. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was utilized. The appropriate turbulence model was selected, and a mesh convergence analysis was conducted for the CFD model. Following that, the CFD model was validated using the conducted ventilation surveys. Two configurations of in-place stone stoppings, designated as Layout-I and Layout-II, were simulated using the validated CFD models. Layout-I featured a shorter in-place stone stopping, while Layout-II had a longer one. The results obtained from the CFD models demonstrated that the increased length of the in-place stone stopping in Layout-II resulted in a notable enhancement in ventilation efficiency at the advanced faces (last stopping), elevating it from 4% in Layout-I to 8.4% in Layout-II. However, no significant impact of the in-place stopping layouts was observed at other faces. In general, Layout-II exhibited a greater circulation of air at the outby stoppings.

At mine sites, the operational and required storage volumes of solution and water storage ponds and reservoirs are usually calculated based upon a water-balance approach. Many climatological variables including precipitation, air temperature, solar radiation, pan evaporation and relative humidity along with operating parameters, are used in the water-balance model. The water-balance model often seeks to find a “critical period” of wet or dry climatological sequences which result in a “maximum” pond storage volume or water demand. The problem with this approach is that the designer usually does not know when the project will come on line in relation to the historical record. To avoid this pitfall, we use a more robust approach. In the more robust method, the water-balance calculations begin in each year of the historic climatological record. This method results in the same number of water-balance runs (or realizations) as the number of years of climatological record. Results of this type of analysis guarantee that the critical period or maximum required pond volume will be found if it is assumed that the historical climatological record repeats itself or if a synthetic time series is used. In addition, this method permits calculation of the likelihood (probability) that a given pond volume will be equaled or exceeded in any given month of the operational life of the facility. In this paper, the results of the sizing of a heap leach pad solution pond are presented along with the probabilities of a given solution pond size being equaled or exceeded based on the robust water-balance approach.

The samples were analyzed for ash and mercury concentrations for each size and gravity fraction. Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

High pressure acid leach (HPAL) and pressure oxidation (POx) or pressure leaching extraction processes occur in autoclave vessels operating at elevated temperature and pressure, acidic conditions with abrasive mineral slurries. The harsh process conditions require specialized severe service metal seated ball valves to support operation of the vessels. Over several decades thermally sprayed titanium dioxide (TiO2) and chrome oxide (Cr2O3) coatings have been applied to extend the service life of the ball valves and other high wear critical components. Variability in the coating application quality control and severe process conditions can result in spalling, coating failure and premature failure of the component resulting is decreased autoclave circuit availability. In 2012 MOGAS, together with BRENCO, initiated research and development for ML-381, metallurgically bonded coating. This paper includes the historical development of severe service ball valve coatings, success of the trials and increasing industry adoption of the ML-381 coating for ball valves and other critical autoclave circuit components.

Technical innovation in electrical and electronic equipment with new functions and design, stimulate consumer?s purchasing desire towards the latest equipments and this leads the rapid increase in the production of increased amount of waste materials Treason et al (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). Without an exclusive definition of administration in business, we could propose to define it as performance by management to adopt or implement established business formulas. Administration could also be defined as a universal process that organizes people, and achieves, through efficiency, common objectives and goals. Humanity developed some form of this process from the beginning of civilization. To imply that something is new in administration might be considered specious or naïve. Moreover, what is new in management? Administration of business is not new to the world. To prove this statement, we need only ask this question: Does the architecture and monumental workmanship of the past civilizations of ancient Egypt, Rome, and the Incas demonstrate management without administration and without definition of objectives? The answer must be a resounding ?NO!? In spite of this acknowledgment and for the purposes of this presentation, I will use the word ?new? in business and hope that the reader will follow my reasoning. The mining industry has unique characteristics in respect to other industries. It is multi-disciplinary, has a single purpose (majority for one metal), has two players (man and nature), and it involves high risks for generating environmental imbalance. Mining exploits non-renewable and finite resources, creates an unstable job market (work hard to have no work) and a speculative economic market with unpredictable prices ? a one-time payment for a finite resource with multiple recycling. On top of all that, the industry still operates within obsolete petroleum-based technology, utilizing practices that were designed two centuries ago. Today, we confront the challenges of the millennium with outmoded practices and management. Ordinarily, several styles of administration are standardized into a FRAGMENTED vertical system of organization. Mining has rigid objectives in production, with profitability as the focus from the beginning to the end. Citing the concept of safety, as an important facet of production is bombastic since, in truth, mining is an experimental industry that consistently reports high numbers of fatal accidents. In mining, we designed a process to work according to our objectives, demanding attention and supervision of all levels of management with a halo of parameters that are not assimilated into the design. We continue to perform a rigid style of management in an industry that is still not responsive to variations of the market ? losses in particular. The existing design process generates loss without capitalization and without response to said loss. This perception is reflected in a mindset that is only too ready to ignore mining liabilities. The reality of the enterprise has created an immense pressure from top to bottom in the hierarchy to do more with less. It is for all of these reasons that I propose to set forth a new essence for administration that encompasses an alternative vision and style in mining: Management by Loss. MANAGEMENT BY LOSS Management by Loss (MBL) is a systematic, integral process organized to quality control operation and the human profitability within the industry. It permits focus on achievable goals by utilizing the best practices (Mining Open-closing). Identification and characterization of loss in the process determine how objectives are defined, controlling the time limits to execute based on constant balance of mass, energy, water, and ?wastes? in each stage of the industry, in order to reach final objectives. The concept of loss can be defined by various criteria. Generally, it is the mass that could not make or arrive at its destination from a designed process or simply, it could not maintain balance. Otherwise, the design of the process describes the final point of the resource. However, those resources could not make their destination because of failure to use the best design, resources and TIME. The loss has typical characteristics such as Identifiable, classifiable, measurable, manageable, controllable, valuables, negotiable, avoidable, reportable, and monitoring. In the traditional scheme, these losses are not registered; they are made exclusions. We are trapped within a system, which was designed to obtain objectives of the industry in a specific timeframe. In the present style of administration, the focus is total - our emphasis in this treatise is in the loss. The current traditional report form contains only the most positive achievement of objectives, only the best of the exercise, humanizing numbers, without touching what we left behind or what we were waiting for to assimilate as a ?surprise account?(new account of liabilities). Management by loss is a method that redefines the concept of waste (waste zero) for controlling the mine operation under the equilibrium of the ecosystems. This method confronts the problems that impact our industry in this millennium. Understanding and quantifying losses (reserves, resources, time, energy, water, soil, materials, equipment, tasks, labor, ecosystems, etc) is a priority mandate for the industry and demands the application of a ?new ? style of administration by seeking to maintain balance instead of the disequilibrium that mining now creates in nature. It is necessary to answer questions such as: How can we minimize loss? How can the loss be assimilated during the life of the mine? What is the vision of mining in respect to the generation of waste? How can we convert liabilities into assets? In addition, the control of loss is determined in the achievement of the plan. Loss occurs because of a failure of the process in the original plan. Still we do not plan to fail but we fail to plan appropriately. It is a remarkable thing to accomplish and compel those objectives described in the original plan when that plan is designed with a determined budget. If not, we lose time and, of course, capital. Moreover, in Management by Loss (MBL), we can find answers to the following questions: What is the multiplier of productivity in mining? What are the influences of identification and characterization of loss and what is the level of efficiency of energy in order to achieve waste zero (effective cut off grade)? The challenges of mining in this millennium validate this new style of administration. Finally, it is important to point out that mining is entering into an era that has different rules, but the industry is still run by companies functioning with objectives from two centuries ago. They are trying to confront issues with concepts that are not designed for new tasks. Therefore, I ask you to consider this new style of administration of business under a vision of how the industry should be organized and managed, with an attitude of balance toward nature and social responsibility.

Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

Full-face tunnelling machines were introduced into German coal mines 12 years ago. It was aimed to utilize these highly efficient systems to drive mine tunnels in rock so that the large demand for development work in some mines could be met. A characteristic feature of coal deposits in Germany - and particularly in the Ruhr Area - is a thick overburden strata. Access is therefore only possible through vertical shafts. A network of horizontal drivages leading from these shafts open the deposits between the different mine levels. The hardcoal-bearing formations are multi-folded and heavily tectonically stressed. Apart from a few extensive fault zones there are many single faults of different natures in the carboniferous strata. During the course of decades coal mining has penetrated to ever increasing depths. Nowadays coal is mined from depths of between 600 m and 1,200 m. The effects of ground pressure in connection with extremely varying rock strengths and high temperatures are particular difficulties which have to be overcome during drivage work. The first full-face tunnelling machines to be applied in the mines had originally bee deigned and developed for tunnelling projects. Not only the machines themselves, but also the back-up equipment had to be adapted to meet the special demands of German coal mines.

The flotation behavior of two high sulfur coals using a non-ionic surfactant as collector from two series of compounds containing oxygenated functional groups was studied in detail using a 2-liter Denver flotation cell. The performance of these reagents was compared with that of an oily collector, namely dodecane. The results showed that at the same coal recovery, a much lower dosage of these non-ionic surfactants was required as compared with that of dodecane. More import was the performance of these compounds as promoters for oxidized as well as un oxidized coal. Mechanisms of interaction of these compounds with the coal are suggested.

The Berkeley Pit of The Anaconda Company is located on the southeast slope of the Butte Hill, the legendary "Richest Hill on Earth," and is one of the largest pit operations in the world completely dependent on truck haulage. Through October 31, 1968, the Berkeley stripping and mining operations have moved more than 442,589,000 tons of material. Present scheduled production is at the rate of 260,000 tons per day, with a record quantity of 306,900 tons having been hauled on September 23, 1968. Although the Berkeley Pit has been in production only a little more than ten years, it has been the proving ground for many of the presently used large trucks. Beginning with the original R. G. LeTourneau 75-ton electric truck in 1960, Unit Rig 85- and 100-ton electric drives, Haulpak 65- and 105-ton electric drives, and Caterpillar 100-ton electric drives have all been tested under production conditions. In addition, engine development has kept pace with both 1000-hp diesel and 1100-hp gas turbine engines now under test. As the size of the Berkeley operation has grown, the truck fleet has changed in size and appearance in order to maintain economic mining costs. The original fleet consisted of forty-three 36-ton trucks with conventional mechanical drives. The present fleet is made up of eighty-nine trucks: nineteen 85-ton Unit Rig electrics with 700-hp diesel engines; sixty-nine 100-ton Unit Rig electrics with either 700- or 1000-hp diesel engines; and one 100-ton Unit Rig electric with an 1100-hp gas turbine engine.

Many remnants of gold exploitation in the Middle Ages were found in the Lower Silesia region. The oldest evidence of such activity was found in the neighborhood of Zloty Stok and comes from the 7th century. Mining of precious and non-precious metal ores has a great relevance in the late Middle Ages when advanced metallurgic technologies were mastered, that allowed to obtain gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc and arsenic from complex ores occurring in the oldest middle part of Sudetes. Historically it concerned the area of the Swidnica Principality and Klodzko County. Experience obtained in Freiberg, which is located close to the Lower Silesia, was used in the development of mining. A high level of mining and metallurgic technology was obtained in the 15th century that caused significant increase of production of the metals mentioned above. Unfortunately, the good time of Lower Silesian mining lasted only up to the 18th century; the notion of preservation of cultural heritage was unknown at that time. The Lower Silesian medieval mines were not in such a fortunate situation as the ?Wieliczka? and ?Bochnia? mines, which are operating to present-day, and which made preservation of the most interesting headings and objects possible. All these objects are now available for visitors. However, in the case of the middle Sudetes it seems that it is often sufficient to localize old shafts and headings on the basis of careful observations and old maps and carry out some earthwork to uncover medieval headings and objects of underground mining activity. They are often preserved in amazingly good state; this also pertains to mining devices. Another issue is of course the permanent preservation of that heritage and its possible availability for re-searchers and tourists. Some success has been achieved in that field (Zloty Stok Gold Mine is a good example), but also problems were encountered in many cases. The Lower Silesian Coal Basin, which has not been exploited for 10 years is an evidence that there is not a holistic conception of mining heritage renovation. Many attractive mining objects disappeared irrecoverably from the mountainous landscape of the Middle Sudetes despite common consciousness of their significance for cultural development of Silesia and other regions.
