The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have put significant effort over the past four decades into researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers who perform the manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-lb bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper provides an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and presents the findings of a recent case study conducted at four industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation is also performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

Brannerite, UTi2O6, is the most common of the refractory uranium minerals and requires leaching under intense conditions to effectively extract the uranium contained within. Brannerite is often found together with apatite in metasomatic uranium deposits. Apatite and other phosphate gangue minerals can inhibit uranium leaching by generating phosphate ions which interfere with the reactions between acidic ferric sulphate and uranium minerals. As part of a detailed fundamental study on the leaching reaction mechanisms for brannerite, tests under a range of selected leach conditions were carried out with the addition of 10 g/L fluorapatite with the goal of identifying conditions where the negative effects of phosphate are reduced. Leaching was carried out for 5 hours with 0.05 mol/L Fe3+ as Fe2(SO4)3 with 0.25–1.00 mol/L H2SO4 and at temperatures between 25 and 96 °C. A single test was performed with 0.05 mol/L Fe3+ as FeCl3 and 1.00 mol/L HCl. In the sulphate system, the effect of phosphate was weakest at the highest acid concentration (1.00 mol/L H2SO4). In the chloride system, phosphate did not suppress uranium extraction, suggesting that HCl leaching could be a viable alternative for the leaching of high-phosphate refractory uranium ores.

Two modes of potential loss of oxime extractants in liquid extraction processes for the extraction of copper have been studied. In loss "by chemical degradation, two mechanisms of acid hydrolysis are possible, some reagents degrade primarily in the organic bulk phase, Others at the interface between the organic phase-- phase protects the oxime but salts added to the aqueous acid phase can promote the rate of degradation. The reagents reported on are the LIX series (Henkel Cpn), SME529 (Shell Chem.Co.) and P5100 (Acorga) Loss by organic entrainment in the aqueous phase leaving mixer-settlers has also been studied, parameters investigated including impeller/tank geometry and the phase inlet arrangements. The consequences of extractant loss by the above mechanisms...are commented upon. They include the direct economic cost, the possible environmental problems and the implications for downstream operations such, as electrowinning.

"SUMMARY The Hachinoshiri tunnel is a 2,469 m long two-lane road tunnel on the Chubu-Odan Expressway. Since more than 70% of the total tunnel length consists of low strength rock masses the competence factor of which is less than 1.0, it is expected that a self standing span cannot be achievable because of no ground arch to be established. The tunnel was thus designed with tunnel support patterns forming multi-arc early ring closure that can develop the load-carrying capacity estimated from the exerted earth pressure, Po, which can result from the competence factor, cf. The tunnel support pattern was selected based on the competence factor at tunnel face, then the subsequent tunnel support patterns were determined with reference to the monitoring data. The tunnel construction adopted full-face excavation accompanied by early ring closure using a 330 kW road header. The proposed construction methods at this tunnel site have turned out ensuring tunnelling in massive squeezing rock, so that they can be verified as reasonable tunnelling technologies, clarifying the relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its design parameters. INTRODUCTION The presence of highly weathered mudstone having the competence factor less than 1.0 where the tunnel became unstable with the early ring closure having the distance to early ring closure, Lf, of 6 meters, resulting in difficulty in maintaining the inner section of the tunnel, prompted a substantial amount of high strength double support and replacing of the tunnel support (Sato et al., 2015). Based on the mechanical characteristics learned from the construction, the mechanical stability of multi-arc tunnels was investigated using 3D FDM analyses with respect to the ratio of the radius for early ring closure, r3/r1, and the distance to early ring closure, Lf, so that tunnel support patterns for early ring closure can be established in terms of the competence factor, of, which was employed for a 725 m long section. Consequently the tunnel support patterns for early ring closure which can be determined from the competence factor became applicable to tunnel construction. The relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its mechanical parameters was also clarified. The early ring closure method adopted ensured tunnelling in massive squeezing rock, verifying its effectiveness in stabilizing the tunnel."

This paper describes an integrated procedure for the very short term production planning of an open pit and the execution of this plan: the truck dispatching. Integration of plan and dispatch means that the plan is realistic so that its objectives can be realized by the dispatch. This realism is obtained by supplying the plan optimization, which involves mixed integer programming, linear programming and non-linear programming, with experimental O.R. models of waiting and blending. The arrangement of these models in the computer programm has made it possible to obtain very short computing time for the planning in spite of the width of the optimisation. The dispatching of a truck is made by solving a classical assignment problem for each dispatch over a horizon of the expected*next 10-15 trucks to request dispatches. This deep-reaching dispatch procedure uses the continuously arriving information about trucks' positions and shovels situations and models by probability functions the expected waiting time of shovels and trucks. In this manner trucks and shovels are synchronized and last moments' opportunities for productivity gains can be obtained. The dispatch procedure takes .5 second on PDP11. This integrated planning and dispatch procedure gives high productivity while ensuring good blending. Results from the Mount Wright mine of the Quebec-Cartier Mining Co., where the integrated procedure has been installed on the existing computer equipment PDP11, are included.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. In 1973 the percentage of total coal production mined by surface methods in the United States again increased, reflecting a long term trend. Barely three decades ago less than 10 percent of the U.S. coal was produced in this manner. Last year surface coal mines produced 299 million tons, 50.7 percent of our nation's coal. At present there are about 2450 strip mines producing coal in 23 states. While accident rates for surface coal mines are less than underground coal mining rates, surface coal mining is certainly one of the more hazardous occupations. Figure 1 shows the injury rates (fatal and non-fatal accidents) of major U.S. industries. Note that surface coal mining is more hazardous than all other industries except contract construction. Accident rates are about the same as the contract construction industry which uses similar equipment. A limited amount of detailed data was available on elements of surface coal mining jobs and this lack of compiled information made it difficult to assess the significance of the conditions contributing to accidents and to make recommendations that would reduce accident frequency. Therefore as part of the Bureau of Mines continuing research efforts related to the health and safety of the coal miner, a contract was awarded to Theodore Barry and Associates of Los Angeles to conduct an "Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Surface Coal Mines."

"Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk models and asbestos fiber counting techniques for monitoring airborne exposures treat all fibers as being equivalent and ignore the effect of dimension on toxicity. While this may have been appropriate when modern analytical methods were not available, the measurement world is now fully capable of making the appropriate distinctions. The importance of width as a determinant of carcinogenicity has been recognized for nearly 30 years within the published literature. Stanton,1 in a landmark study of a suite of fibrous materials, found that durable mineral fibers with widths less than 0.25 mm and lengths longer than 8 mm were causally associated with the induction of tumors. Pott,2 in a later study, postulated a fiber toxicity model that agreed reasonably well with the Stanton findings, but extended the concept to include varying toxicity as a function of length and width. Wylie et al.3 reanalyzed samples used by Davis et al.4 and found that tumor generation was strongly and inversely correlated with fiber width. Crump5 testified increasing fiber length was correlated with disease occurrence. Lippman6 reviewed a number of studies and suggested that mesothelioma was closely associated with long, thin fibers. Berman et al.7 published a risk model, which found that disease was correlated almost exclusively with fibers longer than 40 mm and width less than 0.25 mm. Recently, Loomis et al.8 reanalyzed textile mill samples and found that aspect ratios greater than 40:1 were highly correlated with disease. Incorporation of width into risk models has been limited by the availability of data from operating asbestos plants and, in particular, the observation of an asbestos plant for which there is no observable mesothelioma. There have been only limited studies published on the dimensions of asbestos fibers, with a few serving as the primary references in other literature.9_13 A rare opportunity to collect detailed concentration and dimensional data of airborne crocidolite from an operating asbestos-cement plant using modern analytical procedures arose, providing a chance to supplement the existing literature on airborne fiber dimensions. The asbestos-cement plant is located in the eastern end of Cochabamba, Bolivia along Highway 4. Cochabamba is a relatively large city located in the Andes Mountains, approximately 250 km southeast of the capital La Paz. The city sits in a valley that runs east-west with mountains to the north and south. The crocidolite used in the products made at this facility is mined in central Bolivia, approximately 75 km northwest of Santa Cruz. The crocidolite is a fibrous magnesioriebeckite 14 (blue asbestos). Crocidolite fibers from Bolivia were the subject of prior reports suggesting the fibers are generally longer and thicker than crocidolite from Australia or South Africa.9 At the cement plant, the run-of-mine crocidolite was first pulverized using a hammer mill and then sieved on vibratory sieves to produce fibers of limited size ranges for use in the cement. The sieved crocidolite is mixed with other components, including recycled cement product, to produce a slurry that is vacuum filtered into sheet form. The sheets are then manually molded into a corrugated shape, air dried, and sawed (using circular saws) to accepted dimensions. The sawed sheets are cured in soaking pits for 28 days before being shipped to the consumer. Prior to shipping, the sheets are finished by a light hand sanding followed (at customer request) by applying one or more coats of paint. Using granular media for removal of soluble manganese from mine water and industry waste stream has the advantage of forming a compact surface layer of manganese oxide coating on the media. This process can avoid the step involving the separation of voluminous sludge of manganese hydroxide by the high-pH method for soluble manganese removal. The removal of soluble manganese is accomplished by adsorption and oxidation. The adsorption of Mn(II) on the manganese oxide-coated media was rapid through the specific adsorption and may be due to the ion exchange of hydroxyl ions on the manganese oxide by Mn(II). In the subsequent step, the adsorbed Mn(II) form the intermediate manganese complex on the manganese oxide product is oxidized with dissolved oxygen or other available oxidant source in the aqueous solution. This paper presents the efficiency of removal of soluble manganese from mine water by using a laboratory fluidized bed and the recovery of manganese oxide coating on the anthracite coal particles. In order to accelerate the formation of the manganese oxide layer on the surface of anthracite media, dilute potassium permanganate solution is used as an active oxidant. The effects of operation parameters on the manganese removal including pH, flow rate, concentration of feed and oxidant dosage are evaluated.

In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge”, Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling, with high-pressure grinding. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation, and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed set up to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of highpressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone, and final stage total circuit energy savings, exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.

Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

The Communaute Urbaine de Montreal is currently involved in construction of the South Interceptor which consists of 53 kilometers (33 miles) of 1,800 mm (6.0 ft) to 5,400 mm (18.0 ft) diameter tunnels for the purpose of collecting, storing, and delivering sanitary and combined sewage to the treatment plant. Work is divided into ten separate contracts; nine of which have already been bid. The purpose of this paper is to describe construction activities that have been performed through the end of 1986 with emphasis on a general layout of facilities, a summary of subsurface conditions, and brief descriptions of actual construction activities for the six contracts where tunneling has been performed. All projects are being excavated with tunnel boring machines.

In August 2011, the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) contacted mining institutes and related societies internationally to assess their interest in participating in coordination of the review of the South African Code for Mineral Valuation (SAMVAL) with reviews of other mineral valuation standards. The main mineral valuation standards are the CIMVal Standard of The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the VALMIN Code of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the SAMVAL Code, and the extractive industries? guidance note of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC), Valuation of Properties in the Extractive Industries, GN 14, designed for application within the full set of International Valuation Standards (IVSs). By January 2012, SAIMM had concluded that the level of respondent interest was adequate to organize a meeting. A meeting was scheduled for April 18, 2012 in Brisbane, Australia in conjunction with a VALMIN mineral valuation conference organized by the AusIMM. The stated purpose of the meeting was to develop an accord on terms of reference for pursuing harmonization of mineral asset valuation standards adopted by the participating mineral institutes. SME decided that, although it has not developed its own mineral valuation standard, it should participate in the Brisbane meeting and the harmonization process, as also did the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA).

MFIRE, the mine-fire simulation program of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines. MFIRE has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. It is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence, such as changes in ventilation parameters; external influences, such as changes in temperature; and internal influences, such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the former U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated Fortran programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic-link library. However, the MFIRE 3.0 release included no change or improvement to the fire-modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire-modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of the t-squared fire as a new fire-source model and the ability to include available heat-release-rate versus time data, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor-belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke-rollback phenomena. All of the improvements discussed in this paper will be included in MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future.

High Speed 2 (HS2) mandated that Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes be implemented during design and construction. Gall Zeidler Consultants (GZ) was responsible for developing the BIM Models for the portals, tunnels, and cross passages of the of the 16 km-long Chiltern twin-bore Tunnel. In addition, GZ developed the GBR for the Chiltern Tunnels and incorporated the relevant information into the Project’s BIM framework. This paper presents the implemented BIM framework, describes the modelling approach, and discusses the advantages and challenges of implementing BIM, particularly how BIM improved interface coordination and how BIM was used in feasibility assessments of different construction options.

With increasing interest in the physical cleaning of fine coal, there is a need for extension of the sink-float analysis procedure to finer sizes. Problems arise, however, in ensuring complete dispersion of the particles in the heavy liquids. A procedure has been developed in which surfactants are used as dispersing agents and solids concentration is minimized (using a simple formula to estimate the minimum weight needed for statistical reliability). Using centrifuges to increase separation rates and sub-sieve particle size analysis of the specific gravity fractions, a complete size-specific gravity distribution can be obtained. Analyses have been performed on coal samples as fine as -10 µm.

On average, one to two fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM). Proximity detection systems offer an effective means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and automatically disabling machine motion. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is expected to finalize a regulation that would require the use of proximity detection systems on all CMMs. Approximately one-fourth of all CMMs in use in the United States are already equipped with such a system. The use of these systems will save lives, not only by automatically preventing accidents but also by acting as a tool for educating miners and reinforcing safe work practices. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) have conducted a series of field evaluations to quantify the performance of these systems in an underground coal environment. These field evaluations measured the distance at which the warning and stop zones were activated. The technology provided consistent activation of the warning and stop zones under many of the conditions tested. However, some performance inconsistencies were observed which present opportunities to improve the reliability of proximity detection system technology. Some of the notable variables that caused significant changes in performance and should be considered in the design, implementation, and use of proximity detection systems include interaction with the trailing cable, performance changes during tramming, and orientation of the miner-worn component.

Acid-Minesite-Solutions (AMS) are defined as copper-containing pit lake, tailing pond, acid-mine-drainage, and heap and waste dump irrigation solutions. All of these solutions are characterized by copper, acid and water contents that have value as individual commodities. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed nano- and hyper-filtration membrane methods for the separation of copper and other base metals, acid and water from AMS. These treatments are collectively called HWPT?s Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) systems. The EMS® method of copper recovery produces small volumes of higher-concentration copper solution from large-volume, copper-dilute AMS. A case study of the 4,000 gpm Cananea EMS®-AMS plant for the recovery of copper from an acid-pit-lake resource is described. The EMS® method of copper removal from AMD and tails pond waters has been bench-scale demonstrated and are described, complete with projected budgetary capital and operating costs. Additional treatments for the recovery of sulfuric acid and high-quality water from the permeate (membrane passing) waters for the above-described AMS treatments are presented, with budgetary capital and operating cost estimates. The presence of moderate to high concentrations of colloidal clays in coal preparation plant waters can cause serious operating and economic problems for a coal company. Among the host of possible problems are the following: 1) Poor separation of clays in the plant thickener, resulting in: a) Increased ash in the clean coal. b) Increased specific gravity of the wash water and decreased coal recoveries at the desired quality. c) Increased thickener operating costs in trying to overcome the problem. 2) Decreased solid concentrations in the thickener underflow and increased pumping requirements to meet solids withdrawal requirements.

"The Regional Connector project is a complex subway light-rail project that runs through the heart of downtown Los Angeles, CA. The design-build contract was awarded in April 2014 to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture between Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. and Traylor Brothers Inc., and their designer team consisting of Hatch Mott McDonald (HMM) and subconsultants. The project broke ground on Sept. 30, 2014 and is expected to be completed in winter 2021-2022. The main components of the project consist of 6.4-m (21-ft) diameter twin-bored tunnels, three crosspassages, a 87-m (287-ft) long crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations, and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda and 1st Streets. The project map is shown in Fig. 1. The design and construction challenges associated with each of these main components are discussed in the following sections.Project designTunnels. The Regional Connector tunnels are located primarily within the Fernando formation consisting predominantly of extremely weak to very weak, massive, clayey siltstone. About 305 m (1,000 ft) of tunnels on the eastern end are in alluvium and mixed face of Fernando formation and alluvium. The tightest curve of the tunnel alignment is 178 m (583 ft) in radius. The tunnels were designed with a reinforced precast concrete tunnel lining (PCTL) to be used with an earth balance pressurized (EPB) tunnel boring machine. The PCTL ring is 5.5 m (18 ft-10 in.) inside diameter, 27 cm (10.5 ft) thick, 1.5 m (5 ft) long, and consists of five segments and a key. The segments were designed with 6,500 psi concrete, 80 ksi yield strength wire rebar, convex joint surfaces to enhance seismic performance, and a dosage of 1.7 lbs polypropylene microfibers per cubic yard of concrete for fire resistance. The rings are designed with a right ring and left ring pattern and a taper of 3.8 cm (1.5 ft) to allow for alignment curve negotiation. Figure 2 shows typical sections of the PCTL. The structural lining design was modeled using FLAC 3D. Four consecutive rings were modeled with 32 dowel connection. Loading considered in the lining design includes temporary ground load during excavation, long-term ground loads, seismic loads and train loads. The seismic loads on the PCTL were simulated with the racking deformation applied at vertical boundaries of the model. Due to variation of geologic condition along the tunnel alignment and different surcharge requirements, three different types of reinforcement (typical, heavy and extra heavy) were designed. The typical type PCTL was required in Fernando formation, the heavy type was required in alluvium or mixed-face condition, and the extra heavy type was required in alluvium and underneath the Japanese Village Plaza where a surcharge of 1,000 psf was required."
