The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary' change in the history of underground ore mining.

With modern exploration techniques, it seems likely that an increasing number of the orebodies to be found in the future will be under alluvial fans or valley fill. As a result, a larger proportion of open pit mines will be confronted with the necessity for removal of substantial quantities of alluvial overburden; whereas in the past, for the most part, the open pit mine operator has dealt mainly with hard rock. If this proves to be the case, methods, equipment, and costs for alluvium stripping will become an increasingly important factor in open pit mine planning. Several operations are now faced with this situation, and various methods and equipment are used. At Pima Mining Company's operation the stripping ratio is in the range of 6/1 Well over half of the stripping volume is alluvium. The alluvium is removed almost entirely by carryalls hauling direct to a waste dump. Some removal has been accomplished by shovel and truck operation; more will be done by this means in the future. At American Smelting and Refining Company's neighboring .Mission Mine, nearly all alluvium removal is by large shovels and, trucks. U. S. Borax's Boron operation is accomplishing alluvium removal with carryalls but has been investigating other methods and equipment. The various operations in the Gas Hills Uranium District in Wyoming are stripping mainly with carryalls, although some small draglines are employed. The M. A. Hanna Company in the Mesabi Range employs large draglines and conveyor systems for removal of glacial fill. Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia strips overburden with a large excavating wheel and conveyor system. There are no doubt other open pit operations with which the writer is not familiar, that are handling large quantities of alluvial overburden.

Since 1973 when the first edition of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook was published, many significant changes have occurred in the US mining industry. The industry went through a fairly prosperous period immediately after 1973, but then many economic pressures came to bear on mining companies, particularly in the metal and coal branches of the industry. These pressures changed both the mining methods used and the general economics of the mining methods. As a result, the industry today is different in many ways titan it was in 1973. A general summary of some of the more important changes that have come about will be provided here as well as some assessment of the effects of these changes on the choices of mining methods. In the metal mining industry, the most significant trends were increased surface mining, the use of larger and more efficient equipment, and increased technology and automation. The primary impetus for these changes was unprecedented competition from foreign producers. In many cases, this competition came about because of the nationalization of foreign mines and the tendency for these mines to become a source of foreign exchange. There exists a wide array of industrial by-products that can be shown to produce beneficial responses in the soil/plant environment. These materials range from clean coal technology residues produced in the generation of electric power, particularly those high in gypsum, to mineral 'fines' produced by the aggregates and crushed stone industries. A number of these materials will be examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems will be discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. "INTRODUCTION As one of the most pressing and important political debates of this century, climate change has captured global attention and is forcing governments to take action towards decreasing GHG and carbon emission levels below what was previously thought to be necessary. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery powered A/C systems and diesel-fired heaters, going no-idle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, stand-alone mobile equipment HVAC. THE HISTORY OF GHGS AND CLIMATE CHANGE In 1896 Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960’s Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Figure 1). In 1988 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgement of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of over 2500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries, and because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998 requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5% from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States)."

Refractory ores and concentrates containing silver tend to form Ag-jarosite during autoclave oxidation. Silver extraction from the oxidation products is therefore low, unless a hot lime treatment step to decompose Ag-jarosite precedes cyanidation. Since silver iodide is very stable but soluble in cyanide solutions, the formation and decomposition of Ag-jarosite in the presence of iodine species was studied. Results indicate that Ag-jarosite formation could be prevented in favour of H3O-jarosite and AgI while oxidizing Ag2S under industrial autoclaving conditions, when the total iodine species to Ag mole ratio exceeded 5. Lower ratios gave proportionally more Ag-jarosite and less AgI. Under these conditions existing Ag-jarosite was also found to decompose in H30-jarosite and AgI.

Faulty insulators on mine trolley/track haulageways may allow the flow of leakage currents into the mine roof and ultimately result in combustion of the local roof material. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), has devised a passive means to detect overheating insulators on direct current systems. The detector consists of a spring-loaded cartridge that ejects a reflective streamer of white Teflon tape when subjected to elevated temperatures. The cartridge assembly can be easily installed over the outer metallic shell of an existing trolley line insulator. If an insulator overheats due to ground leakage currents, the visible streamer alerts mine personnel traveling on the haulageway.

Filtration systems with disposable filter elements (DFEs) are used in the underground coal mining industry to control particulate matter emissions from diesel-powered permissible and nonpermissible coal mining equipment. This study was conducted in underground mine conditions to evaluate three types of high-temperature DFEs used in those filtration systems. The DFEs were evaluated for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. After an initial DFE degreening period, the filtration system with all three DFEs was found to be very effective at reducing total mass concentrations of aerosols in the mine air. The effectiveness of DFEs in filtering aerosol mass was found to be a function of the engine operating conditions. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on the performance of the DFE elements. The effectiveness of DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes rather than at low-load modes. Initial heating of certain DFEs resulted in visible white smoke and substantially elevated aerosol number concentrations. The effects of the DFEs on the total concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOX) were found to be minor. The NO2 fraction was found to be generally lower for the DFEs than for the muffler. The engine-out NO2 fraction of the total NOX was found to be substantially higher for low-load modes than for high-load modes..

In order to further elucidate the mechanisms involved in autogenous grinding, the fracture of rock specimens in free-fall impact was studied using the theory of elasticity. Stress distributions in rock specimens under various conditions of impact were analyzed and the conditions for failure were examined in relation to the compressive and tensile strength of rock. The energy equation derived for autogenous grinding coincides basically with Lewis' generalized formula or Oka and Majima's formula, and it is sufficiently general to incorporate all of the three older theories, viz; those of Rittinger, Bond and Kick.

If you are contemplating starting a small coal mining operation there is a good possi¬bility that you can not afford it. If you, have already started, you may be on the road to bankruptcy. If you are a small but well established operator you may be trading dollars, or even dissipating your capital, equipment and other assets. A bleak outlook? Yes! Meant to be discouraging? No! Just a reminder that, with todays costs of doing business, high interest rates, rapidly increasing costs and decreasing sales prices, a small businessman/miner had best watch closely or he will be mired in something worse than a soft bottom - namely a cash and credit shortage, and in too many instances In recent times, bankruptcy. We will not dwell on what happens once you are that far gone, though I could cite a good example. But, let us look at what should be done to avoid such a catastrophe.

Enclosed cab filtration systems are typically used on mobile mining equipment to reduce miners? exposure to airborne dusts and diesel particulates generated during mining operations. Various filter configurationscan be used within the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of cabs to remove the airborne contaminants. The air cleaning performance of cab filtration systems is highly dependent on the efficiency of the air filters, the number of filters used and their placement within the HVAC system. This paper shows how to mathematically model cab filtration systems and illustrates a methodology for developing other cab filtration system design models. Node diagrams of several filtration system circuits are illustrated with their mathematical models at steady state airflow and concentration conditions. Laboratory and field data are presented to demonstrate the validity and utility of modeling enclosed cab air cleaning performance. The paper concludes that incorporating multiple filters throughout the HVAC system improves the air cleaning performance and robustness of the cab filtration system design

6, 7.3 meter diameter autogenous mills at Wabush Mines are undergoing conversion from a radial configuration of pulp discharger to a curved design. Improved discharging efficiency has effectively lowered the pulp level in the mill. The low level operation enhances the grinding efficiency netting a 12% power reduction. Significant reductions to rate of wear has been a spin off benefit. The design incorporates features for holding the assembly solidly in place thus eliminating bolt hole damage and leakers. Preliminary work in one 11 meter mill at Hibbing Taconite did not indicate that all the same advantages were available in their process.

For efficient management of operations, mining companies are required to be able to predict potential scenarios for main market factors. Competitive advantage and value creation are established through managing the value chain well. The mining value chain is usually faced with challenges from various shifts in commodity markets as well as ongoing uncertainties. Therefore, there is a need for accurate analysis of data from the markets, for the prediction of commodities, for instance, Precious Group Metals (PGM). The main objective of this research work is to apply machine learning methodologies with the aim to identify patterns and trends in the Precious Group Metals, and thereafter analyze and predict the future trends of these markets. Numerous machine learning models are applied to a dataset consisting of 15 years of daily price for eight precious metals namely Platinum, Palladium, Rhodium, Ruthenium, Osmium, Indium, Silver, and Gold. The results reveal the patterns and trends within the data sets and that different machine learning methods could be suited for the prediction of market prices for each of the PGMs. The application of an amalgamation of various machine learning methods may result in more accurate predictions of the PGM markets. Accurate prediction of market prices for PGMs will possibly result in unlocking untapped sources of value in the mining industry.

The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

The Bagdad solvent extraction plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird SX-EW plant near Miami, AZ. The current operation still resembles its original form, with four independent sections that run in parallel with each consisting of many long and narrow settlers. Through its 40-year history, the Bagdad SX circuit has experienced a range of pregnant leach solution flows and grades. The unique design of the Bagdad circuit has allowed for numerous configuration changes to accommodate the changing operational conditions, while maintaining an extraction recognized in the industry as excellent.

A packed column jig has been developed for sharp separation of fine particles--150 down to 1 micron--having different densities. The packed jig is a column filled with corrugated packing. A slurry of mixed particles is fed into the middle of the column. Water enters near the bottom of the column as both a steady state and a pulsating flow. The pulsating water sets up a jigging action that interacts with the packing causing the dense particles to sink and exit the bottom of the jig and the lighter particles to rise and exit the top of the packed jig. The result is a sharp, environmentally friendly, gravity separation machine with low operating costs. Grades and recoveries of iron ore exceed that of known devices. Grades as high as 95 percent purity with concomitantly high recoveries are common for iron ore concentration. Low silica, sulfur and phosphate are common. This paper is the first to unveil the packed column jig technology in detail and presents its physical model with performance data. The purification of iron ores and coal is the paper's focus.

This paper demonstrates, using the results of an unusually complete industrial test sequence, what the various interactions are between grind size, collector dosage, and frother type. While particle size is universally acknowledged to be important in optimizing industrial copper sulfide rougher flotation circuits, many of the various interactions that do occur at the industrial level with particle size are still being identified and/or quantified. This study also presents, in a consistent manner, the changes in flotation kinetics that occur as a function of particle size, in a typical industrial circuit along with some insights as to how flotation operators can optimize rougher circuit performance.

Research efforts have been made to characterize a refractory Brazilian bauxite ore composed basically of gibbsite, kaolinite and quartz. Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis of the unbroken ore has been used to describe the liberation characteristics and the association between mineral phases. The linear grade distributions for selected particle size fractions were determined by means? of a particular implementation of King's Random Fracture Model that uses the exponential model for the distribution of linear intercepts through both dispersed (kaolinite) and continuous (gibbsite) phases. The corresponding volumetric grade distributions were then determined by means of a constrained optimization technique for the solution of the transformation equation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out to determine the kinetics for particles of different sizes and the results correlated with the liberation spectrum for each size class.

At the kernel of the subject is due diligence in major decision-making, that is, where major money amounts and a large corporate commitment are at stake. The "due diligence" means how carefully we do our homework before making the decision. The homework or feasibility study addresses different parts of the decision. In the industrial minerals business the study seeks to uncover the pros and cons in: o The mineral reserves, quantity, quality, mineability, access, etc. o The environmental impact of mining, processing and transporting. o The economics of operations. o Financial aspects o Legal aspects o Many other aspects o And -oh yes! the marketing aspects.
