Canada has played a significant role in the international uranium industry for some three decades. Although there have been many challenges in the past, the future offers a more extensive range of problems and prospects as Canada moves to expand its activities in all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle. World uranium demand could grow to an annual requirement of 500,000 tons U308 by the year 2000. A substantial fraction of this material is likely to come from Canada because the country's reserves and resources are large, and because of a favourable geological potential for future discoveries. There has been a long history of association between the producing industry and the federal government, and it has provided the foundation for existing national uranium policies. Close industry-government association will be maintained and developed in future because of the anticipated rapid growth of the industry and the consequent need for continual refinement of government policies relating to exploration, mining, processing and export of uranium.

"Refuge alternatives provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their refuge alternatives meet the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and management of heat from the occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements and carbon dioxide generation that are representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current U.S. coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in.) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in a refuge alternative. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 113 to 134 W, depending on occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 L (0.81 cu ft) of oxygen per hour per person and 20 L (0.71 cu ft) of carbon dioxide per hour per person, which means the margin of safety is 50 percent or more compared with the MSHA requirements. The information on metabolic heat generation can be used to assess refuge alternative thermal environments by testing or simulation. The required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal can be used to assess refuge alternative requirements. "INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The world needs visionary people to break new ground and bring development forward. The human race has an inherent power and lust to explore and push borders, but also to connect and bring people together. Transport of people and goods has through history been a key factor to develop societies and increase collaboration between people and regions. Today, in the era of globalization, efficient transport systems are still vital for further development. Often, ideas of bold projects, like long bridges or tunnels, have been raised long before those projects are realized and actually built. This shows that visions must gradually be transformed into feasible business cases and sustainable political solutions. In some cases also technological development is necessary to make visions come true. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, indeed a visionary engineer, completed the oldest underwater tunnel in the world when the Thames Tunnel in London was opened in 1843. This tunnel is still in operation and now part of London’s rail transport system. Another milestone for the tunnelling industry was passed when the 54 km long Seikan tunnel in Japan was opened in 1988 after more than 15 years of construction. This tunnel is presently the world’s longest railway tunnel. Together with the 50.5 km long Channel tunnel between the UK and France, which has the longest undersea portion 37.9 km, they constitute examples of pioneering engineering projects that bring the industry forward. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be opened and then becomes the longest railway tunnel in the world with its 57.1 km. The trend is obvious that tunnels throughout the world are getting longer and longer. The Brenner Basis Tunnel presently under construction will yet again break the record being 64 km long. Presently, a number of even longer tunnels are planned and under design, some of these also have very long subsea portions, e.g. Bohai Straight Tunnel (123 km), Irish Sea Tunnel (around 100 km) and the Helsinki – Tallin fixed link (approximately 90 km). Northern Europe sees an increasing demand on efficient transport corridors to meet the growth of freight transportation between the Scandinavian Peninsula and central-Eastern Europe. Sustainable solutions will be required, and a shift from road/maritime transports to rail is imperative. Consequently, this paper describes yet another visionary project, a fixed railway link between Sweden and Germany, the Shortcut, to enhance traffic between these regions and to make it greener. It is true that this project still requires some work from politicians, economists and engineers to be realized, however, building a 100 km long tunnel under the Baltic Sea may become reality sooner than we think."

Finite-difference digital computer models can be used to evaluate the effects of proposed mine dewatering and depressuring operations on ground-water aquifer systems. The effects of proposed dewatering and depressuring operations can be simulated for both underground and open-pit mining in confined and unconfined aquifer systems. Design of dewatering and depressuring well arrays to accommodate proposed mining operations in a variety of hydrogeologic settings can be accomplished through judicious application of well-documented and tested computer programs that are widely available from government agencies and universities. The speed and flexibility of the computer models can provide an economical means for comparison of alternative mining plans, and can be used to determine the optimum mine plan with respect to dewatering requirements.

Miners really are an optimistic bunch. Even with the dark clouds hanging over the global industry, mining professionals still turn out in droves at industry conferences. In February, more than 7,200 professionals attended SME?s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, a record. And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. For many small and junior mining and exploration companies the PDAC conference is a place to find potential investors in their projects. The Investors Exchange attracts several hundred companies, each showing off their properties to the many money types who wander the hall during the four-day conference.

Over the last six years I have been involved with the calculation of ore reserves and mine planning using various computer systems and soft- ware packages. This experience has given me a unique perspective from which to view the needs of the engineers and geologists whose job it is to produce geologic and mineable ore reserves. The purpose of this paper is to share that perspective with those who are in this field or are thinking of purchasing computer software to aid in these calculations. My first experience with computers in mining was the creation of a mini-computer based coal reserve and mine planning package written as part of my Easter's thesis. This package took about ten weeks to write, four weeks to document, and two weeks to install at the mine for which it was written. It did what it was designed to do, which was to emulate the hand procedure which had been used prior to its installation. The package was specific to its application which involved several small seams of coal being mined simultaneously and would have required major modification for it to be applied to a mine where, say, one thick seam was mined in two benches.

"Frac sand is industrial silica sand much like glass, foundry, filtration and blast sand. The sand must meet certain specifications set forth by the industry that consumes the product. The production and consumption of frac sand has experienced record growth in the last 10 years because of new oil and gas drilling, new horizontal well drilling, multi-stage fracturing and the stimulation of older wells that have little or no production. Frac sand is needed to “prop open” the fractures in the rock reservoirs to allow oil and gas to flow out more freely.According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the estimated production of frac sand in 2015 was 71 percent of the total production of industrial silica sand or 67.4 Mt (74.3 million st). This is a decrease of about 12 percent from 2014. However, the silica sand industry and other industry sources estimate only 50 Mt (55 million st) of frac sand were produced in 2015. In recent years both the USGS and industry studies have been very close in estimating the production of frac sand but with the recent downturn in frac sand production, perhaps, reporting to the USGS was not as accurate. These discrepancies may be that the USGS statistics are based on voluntary reporting by the industry and some companies report their approximate production, others may not. It is always difficult to obtain accurate production figures of any industrial mineral or construction aggregate operation as most companies tend to keep those figures somewhat confidential. It is certainly accurate to report that the production of frac sand had decreased since the last quarter of 2014 and through 2015. The oversupply of oil and natural gas has led to this decline in frac sand usage. Oversupply has idled drilling rigs and well completion activities. World Oil Magazine reports that 2015 was the worst year for rigs in a quarter century. The only wells being completed are those that have contract agreements to do so, others have been capped. Very few new wells are being drilled. Since about 98 percent of well completion is sand and water, the sand supply has caught up with the demand. There are some bright spots in the “oil patch” as the Permian Basin in Texas and the Woodford Shale in Oklahoma have kept pace somewhat with drilling and completion. It has been reported that the frac sand producers in the Brady-Voca, TX area are producing to nearly capacity. The northern frac sand producers like those in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota are feeling the downturn because of the cost of shipping sand to these moderately active basins and plays. The “rule of thumb” is that freight is 2/3 and sand is 1/3 the cost."

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in pyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05 to 20.0 g/l S02. Other test variables include iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation and pH.

Section 516 of Public Law (PL) 95-87, commonly known as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), requires that underground coal mine operators must "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." Implied in the constraints of Section 516(b)(1) of SMCRA is a determination of what constitutes "material damage" to surface structures, renewable resource lands, and the capacity for sequential land use following underground mining. The authors have already briefly addressed the subject of damage criteria in relation to surface structures (Bhattacharya et al, 1984). In this paper, an attempt is made to provide quantitative guidelines to ascertain material damage to renewable resource lands, although the data available to establish these criteria are considerably more limited than is the case for surface structures. Besides, many more variables influence the severity of the impact at a given site, making the task of assigning stringent ground movement limits even more complex. This often necessitated use of professional judgement and occasional reverting to a qualitative approach. Hence the reader is cautioned at the very outset that the quantitative limits presented herein are approximate and are primarily intended to serve as rough guides for ascertaining the extent of damage to the renewable resource lands under consideration, and that depending on site-specific conditions the actual damage incurred may differ significantly from that predicted by the proposed criteria. The authors, however, feel that the criteria suggested are somewhat conservative, but realistic. The actual damage observed should generally be less severe than predicted by these criteria. It may also be clarified here that the term "subsidence", as used in this paper, implies the total phenomenon of surface and subsurface effects associated with the mining of minerals and not only the vertical displacement of the surface as is sometimes inferred in the literature.

Historically most mine management teams have been forced to operate in a more or less subjective manner. The objectives of mine management are simple and clear. Like other operational managements, mine management teams have the traditional well defined goals of improving efficiency and production while decreasing costs. Unlike other operational managements however, mining teams deal regularly with a vast assortment of uncertainties caused by: - Key production tools being mobile and widely dispersed, and - Non-uniform mining conditions At best in most operations these conditions cause obstacles to productivity and at the same time cause long delay in managment awareness of the obstacles. Planning with delayed feedback of information about necessary deviations is incomplete planning. For these reasons increased operational efficiency remains a constant though somewhat elusive goal.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) of the School of Mines and Energy Development (SOMED), University of Alabama conducted studies to determine the potential for upgrading the Eastern Devonian shales by flotation. Results of those studies indicate that flotation concentrates containing 150 liters of oil/t (36 gal/t) can be produced from shale containing 50 liters of oil/t (12 gal/t) as determined by Fischer Assay with good recovery of the kerogen. Organic carbon and trace elements such as molybdenum, vanadium and uranium also are concentrated with the kerogen. Kerogen concentration was found to be a function of the size of grind.

Primary amines are strong collectors of apatites and they can selectively float sedimentary phosphates from calcareous ores. However, secondary and tertiary amines and tri-methyl ammonium salts were ineffective. The use of kerosene reduces the collector requirements because hydrocarbon is coadsorbed along with the amine on the mineral surface. The heats of reaction of aminium ions with such anions as phosphate, carbonate and sulfate, were measured in a microcalorimeter and discussed in terms of the solubility of the precipitates formed and their relationship with the adsorption mechanism of primary amines on phosphate minerals. Experimental evidence supports a view that primary amines are adsorbed through chemical interaction between the aminium and phosphate ions at the mineral surface.

"In most copper mines and concentrators, mill water is continuously recovered and reused, with fresh water added to make up for losses. When mixed, these water chemistries can lead to severe scaling, especially in pipes, tanks and pumps on the mill water supply side, reducing flows and causing significant production losses.At KGHM Robinson Nevada Mining Company, increases in the fresh water addition ratios resulted in severe scaling problems and premature pump failures thereby jeopardizing plant production. What initially appeared to be a few isolated scaling events eventually unfolded into a recurring pattern of water supply-related production losses with increasing severity. Through completion of detailed root cause analysis, chemistry modeling, laboratory work, in-plant testing and system engineering, the mechanisms of scaling were identified and addressed.Advancements in fresh water addition practices and antiscalant application methods resulted in a stepwise reduction of the mill water scaling. Cost savings and production benefits were significant to the plant’s financial metrics.IntroductionThe production of mineral and metal concentrates using the flotation process requires large quantities of water. Flotation is utilized as the primary means for beneficiation with sulfide ores. Mined ores are crushed and ground into a slurry of 20-55% solids. For each ton of ore, 400-900 gallons of water1 are needed to supply the grinding mill. Additional water is needed in the flotation circuit as well. With many modern mills operating at2 11,000-165,000 tons/day, water supply volumes can be upwards of 3,000 gpm to 100,000 gpm of flow.For plants operating at or above capacity, disruptions and restrictions in water supply flow can have a direct impact on the production and recovery of the metal. Water supply flow can be limited for a wide variety of reasons but of interest are those limitations that are due to mineral scaling. Mineral scaling is the selective point precipitation of inorganic species above saturation concentrations. Precipitated species form flow-restricting deposits in the mill water system (tanks, pumps, pipe and valves), that will eventually impact water supply to the concentrator."

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) and Associated Works will be the seventhland crossing between Shenzhen and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.The project includes site formation of about 23 hectares of land for the development of the BCP and anapproximately 11-kilometre (km) long dual two-lane trunk road (the “Connecting Road”), connecting theBCP with the existing Fanling Highway. The route alignment is within a relatively rural area of HongKong, with very limited similar infrastructure works carried out nearby. It passes beneath bothmountainous terrain, and alluvial plains, and falls within an area of several major regional faults andassociated metamorphism, resulting in a complex variety of ground conditions.ALIGNMENTThe Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SpecialAdministrative Region carried out extensive public engagement in selecting the alignment of theConnecting Road. Over 70 consultation forums with public bodies, including the District Councils, RuralCommittees, local representatives, etc. were held during the alignment design process. In order toalleviate the concerns of various nearby villages, and to minimize land clearance and environmentalproblems, the original alignment of 10 km long (3.5 km of tunnels and 6.5 km of viaducts) was revised toits final alignment of 11 km long which comprises 5.7 km of tunnels, 4.3 km of viaducts and 1.0 km of atgrade roads.The finally adopted alignment commences at the southern end with an interchange with the existingFanling Highway, part of Route 9, which is a dual three lane expressway currently being widened to dual4 lane. Alongside the expressway is the main rail connection to the mainland of China, and theinterchange viaducts connecting to the southern portal of the Lung Shan tunnel must cross over thisrailway. The southern portal is located in the foothills of Lung Shan, and the 4.8km long tunnel is alignedin a north-northeasterly direction. The southern half passes under mountainous terrain of Lung Shan,and then crosses a valley containing the Kwan Tei river. The northern section comprises low hillsseparated by an alluvial plain and Tan Chuk Hang village area. At the northern end, the tunnel turns tothe north-west to connect with Sha Tau Kok road, an existing single carriageway road, with a newroundabout interchange. Mid-way along this tunnel there will be a ventilation building, connected to the main tunnel by a 330m long ventilation adit. To the north-western side of this interchange is the900m long Cheung Shan tunnel, and after this the remaining 4.3km of the highway connecting with theBoundary Control Point is to be constructed as an elevated viaduct. The alignment is shown in Figure 1."

Many underground stone mines in the United States operate on multiple mining levels. The effects of interburden thickness, pillar offset between mining levels at various depths of cover, and in situ stress conditions are poorly understood. Pillar offset is the degree to which pillars are not columnized or stacked. In this study, calibrated numerical models are used to examine limestone pillar stability in these conditions. Also, the critical interburden thickness required to minimize the interaction between mining levels is explored. The model results show that there is interaction between numerous factors that control the stability of stone pillars in multiple-level conditions. The highest degree of local pillar instability occurs when pillar overlap ranges between 10 and 70 percent. The highest degree of stability occurs when pillars are stacked.

Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. Acid mine drainage, discharging from coal beds, has polluted our streams and rivers since early time. These pollutants affect water quality by lowering the pH, reducing natural alkalinity, increasing total hardness, and adding undesirable amounts of iron, manganese, aluminum and sulfates, The tangible damages are the costs involved in replacing equipment corroded by the acid water, additional treatment costs at municipal and industrial water treatment plants, and damages resulting from corrosion of steel culverts, bridge piers, locks, boat hulls, steel barges, pumps, and condensers. Intangible damages, which are real and important, include destruction of biological life of the stream, reduced property values, and streams rendered undesirable for recreational uses.1 The major problems of mine drainage occur in the anthracite and bituminous coal regions in Appalachia. However, many of the western mining states have significant mine drainage problems in specific areas, but the overall problem is not as great as in the eastern states.

Hazen Research, Inc., has developed a new process for removing pyritic sulfur and ash from coal. Feed coal is contacted with iron carbonyl vapors, Fe(CO)5, at 190°C which puts a thin skin of magnetic material on the pyrite and ash, but does not affect the coal. Thus, low intensity magnetic separators yield a nonmagnetic coal, low in sulfur and ash, and a magnetic refuse, high in sulfur and ash. Results are given for clean coal produced by this method. A comparison is made between results of the magnetic process and the U. S. Bureau of Mines two-stage flotation process cleaning identical samples of Pittsburgh Coal. Capital and operating costs of the two cleaning methods are discussed.

The level of automation employed in flotation production is relatively low. In an actual concentrator, operators use their judgment to adjust the production state based on the visual characteristics of the flotation froth surface. There are shortcomings, such as strong subjectivity and lagging process operation, that easily cause the waste of manpower and material resources. Machine vision technology is introduced to replace human visualization, achieving a quantitative description of the visual characteristics of the froth surface. The state variable parameters are provided for the identification of the flotation conditions.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.
