The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

The industrial diamond review arrived too late for the June issue. Since the economy is showing a resurgence of strength, diamond tool consumption is similarly on the rise. Tool makers indicate that sales are picking up. They expect that 1994 will see about an 8% increase. Fabricators expect this positive trend to continue through 1995. In the industrial sector, sales of grinding wheels, honing stones, cutting tools and the like are expected to grow 5% and 8% during the next year. Users still are buying only those products necessary for "just-in-time" production cycles.

INTRODUCTION Mineral ore comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding - primary and secondary), natural or manufactured nonmetallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media - steel rods, steel or iron balls, or a combination of autogenous media and steel balls (SAG milling). This chapter covers rod and ball mills utilizing manufactured metallic grinding media. MILL DESIGN The interior surface of rod and ball mills exposed to pulp and/or grinding media are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic or a combination of rubber and metallic wear resistant materials. Rod and ball mills essentially draw constant power, thus are well suited for use of synchronous motors with power factor correction capabilities as drive motors. A net of approximately 120 to 130 percent of running torque is required to cascade the charge in these mills. The pull-in torque is about 130 to 140 percent with the pullout torque to keep the motor in-step (in-phase) generally in excess of 150 percent. When rod and ball mill are started across-the-line the starting and pull-in torques result in inrush currents exceeding 600 percent which possibly result in high voltage drops. To deliver 130 percent starting torque to the mill the motor design must take into account the maximum anticipated voltage drop. Motor torque decreases as the decimal fraction of the voltage available squared. E.g., a motor rated 160% starting torque with a 10% system voltage drop will deliver 160% x or 129.6% torque to its output shaft When it is not possible or practical to start a fully loaded synchronous motor across-the-line it is possible to utilize the motor's pull- out torque to start the mill. By using a clutch, normally an air clutch. between the motor and the mill, the motor is brought up to synchronous speed before the clutch is energized. If the motor has an adequate amount (175 or greater) of pull-out torque the pull-out torque starts the mill without major disruptions on the electrical system. Since the energy release at initial cascade of the mill charge is an inverse function of acceleration time, a minimum acceleration time of 6 to 10 seconds or more is recommended to prevent damage to the mill or the mill foundation. Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simpliest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinionshaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling. Using a speed reducer between the motor and pinionshaft permits using motors having speeds in the range of 600 to 1000 RPM. In this speed range, if power factor correction is not required induction motors can be used; squirrel cage where there is no restriction on inrush current; slip ring where a slow start and low inrush current is required. Air clutches can also be used to ease starting problems with squirrel cage motors. In some areas of the world induction motors and starters are less expensive than synchronous motors at a sacrifice of motor efficiency and power factor correction. Dual drives, that is two pinions driving one gear mounted on the mill, become economical for ball mills drawing more than 3500 to 4000 horsepower (2600 to 3000 kilowatts). Further developments of the low frequency, low speed synchronous motors with the rotor mounted on the mill shell or an extension of one of the mill trunnions could improve the cost picture for these "gearless drives", making them practical for large ball mills. The percent of critical speed, which is the speed at which the centrifugal force is sufficiently large to cause a small particle to ad- here to the shell liners for the full revolution of the mill is given in mill specifications. During the past few years, a completely new concept has been applied to the design of drives for operating at very low speeds. In this, the motor is supplied by a variable-frequency thyristor cyclo-converter. Today, frequency converters with practically unlimited power ratings can be constructed. The system frequency of 50 or 60 Hz is reduced to about 10 % of these values. This makes it possible to operate the synchronous motor, which has a correspondingly high number of poles, at the extremely low speed of the driven mill, i.e, without interposed gearing. The first motors of this type were built to drive ball mills in the cement industry, which are very similar to those employed for ore processing. Here, too, the tendency is to build units of ever increasing capacity. In the case of conventional drives with mechanical gearing, this involves correspondingly increasing difficulties. These difficulties have prompted various studies of the possibility of applying the new type of drive to ore mills as well, but a gearless drive has not yet been built for this application. However, gearless drives for ore mills will certainly materialize soon and it was therefore considered a logical step to report at the A.I.M.E. Conference on the experience gained with these drives in the cement industry, and on the present state of development.

Bessac's presence in Singapore started in 2014 with the construction of the Thomson metro line, which includes 18 miles of twin-bore tunnels and 22 stations split into 17 construction packages. Bessac joint venture was allotted the T219 lot. The works include the construction of a new 660-foot (200-meter) long transfer station, two parallel 19-foot (5.8 m) ID tunnels and a pedestrian underpass. The urban context and the very soft ground stratum imposed to utilize unusual tunneling techniques, from upgrading a slurry TBM to a high-density slurry TBM to launch with very low cover and canopy pipe roofing completed with a MTBM without retrieval shaft.

The Concord Mine Coal Preparation Plant of United States Steel Corporation, located near Bessemer, Alabama, began operations in June, 1950. The basic cleaning circuit consisted of a Chance Cone for cleaning the 2-inch x 3/8-inch fraction and concentrating tables for cleaning the minus 3/8-inch coal fraction. Dewatering of the final product was accomplished with 35-mesh vibrating screens. However, because Concord coal is very friable (Figure 1), 85 per cent passing three mesh and 25 per cent passing 28 mesh, there was a considerable amount of fines passing through the dewatering screens. To recover these fines, the dewatering screen effluent was sent to two 70-foot diameter hydro-separators with the underflow returning to the dewatering screens and the overflow going to a 175-foot diameter thickener for water clarification, (Figure 2). As might be expected, there was a considerable amount of recirculation of the minus 35-mesh coal in this system. This degraded the coal and led to higher moistures. It also resulted in a fines bleed-off of plant water and thickener underflow to a fine-coal settling pond. In 1961, vacuum filters were installed to supplement the screens and to recover the fine coal lost in the bleed-off. The above system resulted in a product moisture of about 20 per cent. Further reduction to approximately 11 per cent was accomplished by drainage from railroad cars during transit to the coke plant. Control of the moisture at unloading was poor because of variations in operating levels and railroad car availability, but since the Concord coal constituted a smaller percentage of the coal previously used at the coke plant, the high moisture and fluctuations did not seriously hamper coking operations.

The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is an inhalation health hazard for mining and industrial work environments and must be monitored. We provide theoretical analysis of real-time measurements for determining RCS mass concentration without the use of filters by using photoacoustic spectroscopy. The suspended dust in the mine air can be continuously sampled by the photoacoustic instrument. A tunable quantum cascade laser is the light source, allowing for determination of interferences such as kaolinite, coal dust, and water vapor. The most useful spectral region is found to be between 11 and 13 μm. Absorption by water vapor, and, to a lesser extent, carbon dioxide, in this spectral region has gaps that allow for quantification of the aforementioned dust species as well as a convenient check on the calibration of the instrument. This work brings photoacoustic measurement of aerosol to the mid infrared range where spectrally dependent light absorption can be used to quantify dust composition and mass concentration.

Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. The unit costs of dry crushing, within the efficient reduction ranges of equipment now available, are considerably less than those for the reduction of the same material in the same size range by wet mills using grinding media. This is a commonly recognized fact which cannot be disputed; still we find considerable imbalance in costs between the crushing and grinding sections of many operating mills. In other words, there are many instances where more reduction could be accomplished in the lower cost area of dry crushing. In addition, equipment is now available which enlarges this area and makes it possible to consider much finer crushing than has been heretofore economically feasible. There has been a tendency for the past two decades to utilize wet rod-¬milling in the reduction step. This actually amounts to a fourth stage of crushing in a size range formerly served by roll crushers which have fallen from favor on account of high operating costs, Some investigations have indicated that there is not sufficient difference in the operating costs of rolls and rod-mills to give a clear cut advantage to either method, There has for some time been a need and an opportunity for a dry crushing process to improve costs in the range now served by these two systems.

The ore reserve modeling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high grade and low grade drillhole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

Significant resources grading less than about 1 % nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greens tone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifting. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

The new OSH regulations concerning ground ward monitoring of underground coal mines has been the source of many concerns for the mining industry. Because the regulations were initially written at the federal level but are being administered at the state level, considerable confusion exists within the industry as to what is actually required. Based on the preparation and submission of over 30 monitoring plans for existing deep mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, we now have a very good feel for the detail the monitoring plans, as well as the costs to im plement the plans. We do not, however, feel confident in our evaluations of the long-term impact the ground water monitoring regulations may have on the industry.

Common mineral resources (sand, gravel, crushed stone, etc.), which are so necessary for the construction of metropolitan areas, are rapidly being depleted or otherwise rendered unavailable in the very areas that need them most. However, the problem of planning for these resources involves a number of independent and dependent variables that must first be defined and related. Finally, a dollar value must be assigned where possible. Complex interrelationships between the variables and their dependence on outside factors has made mathematical "solution" of the problem of planning for non-renewable mineral resources difficult at the present time. Therefore, the use of computer simulation is suggested as a means by which this complex problem can be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to report on a continuing research program whose objectives are: (1) to delineate the factors involved in planning for the utilization of common mineral resources in urban-suburban environs; (2) to construct a planning model for these materials amenable to computer analysis, (3) evaluate the model by using test cases, and (4) perform a sensitivity analysis to determine the initial parameters in future planning for these materials.

FTIR measurements using a special ATR cell were carried out to investigate the adsorption of two thiol collectors, potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and sodium diethyl dithlophoshate (NaDTP), on an unoxidized lead sulfide surface. Both qualitative and quantitative determinations of the collectors were made at the coverages from two monolayers down to 2% of the monolayer. The experiments revealed that the thiol collector species coordinate to the lead atoms at the surface of lead sulfide but the surface products distinctly differ from the precipitated bulk lead compounds. There exists a linear relationship between the coverage and the signal intensity of the IR spectra within the coverage range studied.

It is clear that precise overground and under-ground mapping is an important factor for all designers. Due to rapid changes in underground construction, tunnel designers are increasingly in need of updating project information. This article explains the latest techniques for detecting under-ground utilities as well as underground mapping. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very ac-curate and popular navigation and mapping system that has been used extensively above ground, but is not used for underground mapping as signals are not strong enough to pass through ground or water. Most underground techniques were developed for military applications during the first and second world wars. Later, the techniques became public. For example, ground penetrating radar was developed for the military in 1970 to be used for locating tunnels under the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Later, the same technique was used for detecting unexploded ordinance such as plastic land mines.

Electric drives hire done outstanding job in many-fields that are related to the mining industry. The equipment that is offered for electric-trucks was developed from the traction equipment which is used on the diesel electric locomotive. Rotating equipment available for use on electric trucks is identical in principle to that which is used on these locomotives. In as far as it is practical, similar controls are used. Another descendent of the diesel electric locomotive can be found in the oil well drilling industry, Here, locomotive traction motors and. electric controls have been modified to fit the particular requirements of the drilling industry, One 2400 H.P. diesel electric drilling rig drilled a 24,000 Ft. well in West Texas with an electrical maintenance cost in the order of 7¢ per hour This was a new rig and the costs are less than the average maintenance costs will be for the life of the equipment, Even soy since it took one (1) year to drill this well, this 7¢ per hour has real significance. Electric shovels use a similar type of electrical equipment; they too have shown real savings over the equipment they replaced. Since electric drives have done so well, in other fields, they warrant consideration for use in high horsepower, large capacity trucks.

It has been 2-1/2 years since the Congress passed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (PL95-87) the Office of Surface Mining every deadline specified in the Act. Hopefully the Congress will begin to realize that specifying unrealistic deadlines does not accomplish the end desire of legislation any sooner -- it only adds to the confusion, and actually hinders orderly, efficient progress. OSM has been sued by all categories of involved parties -- environmental activitist organizations, the states, and the coal operators. This situation has resulted for two reasons: (1) insufficient time was allotted by the Congress to properly develop the regulations and program, and (2) OSM?s philosophy that it must dictate every detail of reclamation operations from Washington, even though many of its people are inexperienced with coal mining. These law- suits are now demonstrating their value. OSM is showing signs of "pulling-in-its horns" and, hopefully, will approach the revised regulations in a more realistic fasion.

The transport of slurry within the ball mill depends on the peripheral velocity and porosity of the ball charge. Residence time distribution and mill hold up are of-ten used as indicators of the mode of transport. In this work, the transport problem is tackled via direct simulation of the three dimensional motion of the ball charge. In doing so, the following quantities are calculated: (i) ball size distribution as a function of the distance from the feed end of the mill (ii) mean peripheral and longitudinal velocity and longitudinal velocity of balls of different sizes, and (iii) the spatial distribution of porosity within the ball charge. Hence, the problem of transport is handled as a motion of part of the slurry with the ball charge and part as hydrodynamic flow through the porous structure.
