"SUMMARY The importance of information management was recognised in surface construction industry decades ago, and has increasingly being recognised through formal process and laws. Around the world, these laws and codes of practice are currently being drafted and enacted, to reflect the development of software tools and corresponding increasing adoption by industry. This paper deals with specifics of implementing information modelling in tunnelling business utilising BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology developed for buildings as well as similar technology developed for mining industry. Although BIM is recognized initially as a 3D digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility, the real benefits come when complex capability through construction sequencing and even detailed programming (4D) and cost capabilities (5D) are included. INFORMATION MODELLING The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry requires the production of design and construction information, which involves the input from several teams. The tasks allocated to each team need to be carried out in a particular order and coordinated in order to benefit all those involved and the project itself; this is known as “collaborative working”. To ensure the quality, and guarantee that information can be used without change or interpretation, working processes and standards needs to be agreed upon or else it will hinder collaboration and have a negative impact on project delivery. Case studies show that the additional capital delivery costs due to uncoordinated, inaccurate and ambiguous information amounts to 20-25%. The solution to overcome these problems and improve collaborative working in a project is the adoption of BIM. It is a modern approach to the design, documentation, delivery, and life cycle management through the use of project information databases coupled with object-based parametric modelling. BIM requires traditional practices shifting from simple drafting to using 3D native models for building design environment. Additionally, it requires that models are equipped with information that has been traditionally decoupled in a text or other kinds of documents. The goal is not in creating a 3D graphic representation of design intent; rather, it is a comprehensive information management tool based on the simulation of design and construction build around a central repository."

The worldwide talc industry has experienced significant changes since the 1980's. Consolidation of companies and operations in Europe, Australia, and North America has altered the face of supply and distribution. Imports of Chinese and Australian crude have increased competition and product options. The number of processing operations without local mines has moved competition closer to the market area. Quality controls related to ISO certification and tighter specifications demanded by the customers have altered the way our mines and mills operate. Ceramics, coatings, and paper applications continue to consume the majority of processed talc.

Oil and gas together are the most important energy sources consumed in the United States. In 1983, 67% of total energy consumption was represented by these two resources (43% was oil and 25% natural gas), while coal accounted for only 23% of U.S. energy use. All other sources (hydroelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wood and other waste products) accounted for only 10% (U.S. Department of Energy, 1983, p. 1). In this chapter we address the issue of regulation in the oil and natural gas sectors of the U.S. energy industry. In addition, we analyze the cartel characteristics of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). If OPEC is an effective cartel, then U.S. oil as well as substitute energy prices, production, and consumption will be affected by cartel action. Further, as the nation learned in the 1970s, major changes in oil prices produced major disturbances in other sectors of the U.S. and world economies. Consequently, it is important to determine whether the roughly ten-fold increase in nominal prices that occurred in the 1970s was the result of cartel action, the result of normal economic forces adjusting to the fact that the world was running out of cheap oil, or some combination of the two. Furthermore, the presence of OPEC- associated oil price increases is related to regulations that were imposed on the energy sector during the decade of the 70s. THE RATIONALE FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION Economists have traditionally judged the state of an economy to be efficient if it is impossible to improve the welfare of any one member of society without harming someone else. Any economy that satisfies this condition is said to be Pareto efficient, after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who first gave rigorous attention to such questions (see Chapter 4.10). It is easy to see why an economy that fails to satisfy this condition could not be efficient; by definition, it would be possible to alter the allocation of resources in a way that improves everyone's welfare.' Much of the appeal of this weak efficiency criterion is that it avoids comparisons of levels of well being among different individuals. The cost of such generality, however, is that in any given economic system a wide array of different Pareto efficient states will typically be attainable. In the simple Robinson Cursoe economy of the undergraduate textbook, for example, efficiency could just as easily be attained in the case where most of the island's resources are owned by Friday as in the case where they are under Crusoe's control. However, the distribution of welfare among the two inhabitants would obviously be quite different in the two situations. Such equity issues cannot be settled on objective or scientific grounds. To decide which distribution of welfare is socially "best" an explicit value judgment is needed. It is useful to keep in mind the preceding distinction between efficiency and equity issues when analyzing the role of government in a market economy. Decentralized market processes will not necessarily result in a distribution of welfare that society considers just. The purpose of this paper is to describe the roles of cement and concrete in construction in general and, more specifically, as construction materials of the Southeast. For purpose of this discussion, the Southeast will include the geographic area composed. of the following 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. In one sense, cement by itself is not a construction material. It is a finely ground manufactured mineral product, usually gray in color. Cement is mixed with water and sand, gravel, crushed stone, or other aggregate to form concrete, the rock-like substance that is the most widely used construction material in the world. Because cement is seldom used by itself for construction but is usually a component of concrete, there is no such thing. as a "cement" sidewalk, a "cement" highway, or "cement" building. Neither is "portland" a brand name. It is a generic term used to describe any cement that hardens in the presence of water and is made to standard specifications .. For all practical construction purposes, therefore, all cement is "portland." The name "port-land" was selected by the English inventor of the product in 1824 because concrete made with his product resembled natural building stone quarried on Portland, an English island. Although portland cement is not the final material which finds its way into completed construction, as the principal component of the most widely used construction material in the world, the location and process of its manufacture warrant some discussion

The Annacis Island Outfall Project includes two TBM bored tunnels with face pressures above 3.5 bar, with an internal diameter of 4.2 metres. This paper discusses the innovative approach to TBM tunnelling and TBM design at the Annacis Outfall Project. The TBM custom design includes a 3.6 m OD core machine manufactured by Herrenknecht and a 5.0 m add-on by the Contractor (Bessac), acting as an extension kit, with optimized gantry design to accommodate for short tunnel drives and quicker launches. This novel design approach produced safety improvement, cost and schedule savings while streamlining logistics of TBM retrieval.

The mine disaster last November in northern West Virginia has compelled the coal mining industry to take a closer look at the methods of transporting and applying rockdust. The USBM has indicated they would like to see a minimum of 80% incombustble in the back entries and want rockdust to be maintained to within 40 feet of the face at all times. With today's high rate of advance of mining machines it will be necessary to apply dust in the immediate returns continuously and the working places mutt have dust applied during the operating shift. The inspectors have become more demanding in requiring clean-up of coal and coal dust in the working place before rockdust is applied and are insisting on better clean-up and better rockdust applications along belt conveyors. Maintaining a constant application of rockdust in the back entries can be done with a Trickle-Duster. The machine is designed with hopper capacities of either 400 or 1,000 pounds of dust. The discharge rate of dust being fed through 1-1/2 inch diameter hose can be adjusted from 1/2 to 5 pounds per minute. The hose is extended into the return through the last open breakthrough and the return air carries the rockdust along w th the coal dust, depositing them uniformly on rib, roof and bottom.

The turning bands method for the simulation of spatially correlated data in two or three dimensions requires that the relation- ship between the covariance obeyed by the realizations first generated on lines, and the covariance of the two or three dimensional process must be solved. In three dimensions the solution is immediate, but in two dimensions the integral equation relating the covariances of the one and two dimensional processes is more complex. This is solved in this paper and is applied to the most common model used in ore deposit description, the spherical covariance.

The use of longwall/shortwall mining systems is under increasing scrutiny by the U. S, coal industry as a means to reverse the decline in productivity. The success of these mining systems depends to a great extent upon designing the system hardware to best suit local conditions. Of particular importance in this regard is designing the various elements of the total ground support system, including face, face end, and gate road supports, to accommodate local geologic conditions. This presentation centers on the problem of selecting the face support system. The existing geologic situation can influence the selection of the face support hardware in a variety' of ways. In general terms, these influences can be grouped into the following four areas: 1. The capacities required of the support unit; 2. The roof, coverage supplied by the support units; 3. The flexibility required of the support unit to meet changing geologic conditions; and 4. The required stiffness characteristics of the individual support units both vertically and horizontally. The following will center on the first area, i.e., the required d capacities of the support unit, in particular, the maximum required load density for a particular geologic situation.

In recent years there has been increasing concern in the mining industry over the availability and high cost of diesel fuel to support mining operations. Unit Rig & Equipment Co. has been deeply involved with the development and testing of the newest designs for trolley assist. Beginning in dune 1980, Unit Rig modified and commissioned six 156 metric ton (170 short ton) trolley assist haulage trucks at two mine locations in South Africa. Operating haulage trucks with General Electric GTA 15E/776 drive systems were chosen for the tests since this size of truck represented the majority of the population of large size haulage trucks and the greatest technical development problems. Test operations have proven the feasibility of equipment designs in actual operation and preliminary economic data has convinced the operators to proceed with planning to modify their entire mining operation to use trolley assist. The initial capital investment incurred for trolley assist can be recovered in a short period of time. Following this quick capital recovery, mines will continue to realize lower operating costs through increased productivity and lower diesel consumption.

A full-scale geotechnical model of a 15-foot (4.6 m) wide coal mine entry in correlation with computer finite-element analysis (FEA) is being employed at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center for basic research on roof-bolt support systems. Physical and computer modeling of various coal mine roof-bolt reinforcement systems will increase our basic knowledge of how roof supports function. This information, in correlation with computer FEA and underground verification tests, will provide a basis for establishing safer, more cost- effective roof control plans and help establish guidelines for employing fully grouted and conventional bolting systems. The basic rationale for the research, research approach, methods and equipment employed, results to date, and future research plans are described in this paper.

Recently, the President of the Portland Cement Association, Robert D. Maclean, gave the keynote address at the Rock Products Eighth International Cement Industry Seminar. He said, after listing the seven plagues our industry is suffering, "none of these items I have listed is a sales or marketing problem. Further, none is a problem that can be relegated to long-term study by public or private research agencies. The centrifuge which will be reviewed in this dis¬cussion is the continuous solid bowl typo. As there are presently approximately 2000 of these units operating in our country, and about 200 of these in use in the coal industry, I expect that most of you are acquainted with its operating principle. How¬ever, for those who are not familiar with the machine a brief introduction is in order. The continuous solid bowl centrifuge was first successfully marketed, worldwide by the Bird machine Company in 1934. The successful development of this unit was based primarily on the invention of a drive mechanism to properly control the differential speed between the two rotating elements. This centrifuge was introduced into the coal industry immediately following the second World War. Today there are five or six additional firms' selling this machine in our country, and approximately twenty others in Europe, England and Japan.

At 6 percent downgrade to a low point beneath California?s Sacramento River, the Lower Northwest Interceptor Sewer was a difficult project from the outset. Project owner Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District (SRC-SD) planned to excavate the V-shaped tunnel in two sections using an earth pressure balance (EPB) machine in soft ground. Muck removal, due to the steep downgrade, was a tricky proposition. ?We did look at muck cars, but determined they were not the best option due to the relatively steep slope of the tunnel alignment. The safety benefits of conveyors on this job were obvious, as there were not the potential hazards associated with muck cars traveling on an incline or derailing,? said Steve Norris, senior civil engineer for SRCSD The successful project represented one of the first instances of a conveyor system being used for a soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) application. Several projects in California, including a recent tunnel completed in 2009, have highlighted a growing acceptance of conveyor muck removal in a variety of ground conditions. Conveyors offer higher system availability than more common methods, such as muck cars, as they allow for continual operation of the TBM. The design of conveyor systems must, however, take into account the differences in material between soft ground and hard rock, including belt cleaning features, sealed transfer points and other elements.

As all of us know, the "heat" is on for western coal. The need for western coal is critical if the nation is to reach the goals of Project Independence by 1985. Without the development of western coal, the goals will not be met. It's that simple! That's because 50 percent of our nation's coal reserves lie in the states of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And surface mining is the key to unlocking these reserves. Of the nine states in the coal provinces, five-Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona-are the best examples since surface mining accounts for 88 to 100 percent of the coal mined in each of these states. Collectively, their annual production more than doubled between 1969 and 1972, rising to 35 million tons per year. And, taken individually, each state's production has more than doubled, also. Total annual production from these five key states could very well exceed 180 million tons per year by 1980-four times the 1972 production level. The biggest producer among the five is Wyoming. Wyoming's production tripled since 1969 to nearly 14 million tons in 1973. So the heat is on for western coal, especially from Wyoming. Now we come to the question of how to mine this increasingly precious mineral. What are the available methods? First, let's take a brief look at several characteristics of western coal deposits.

Minerações Brasileiras Reunidas S.A. - MBR is a brazilian iron ore mining company geared for the export market. It is controlled by Companhia Auxiliar de Empresas de Minerações - CAEMI through its subsidiary Empreendimentos Brasi leiros de Minerações - EBM which holds 51% in MBR and is formed by CAEMI, the six major japanese steelmills and five japanese trading companies, Universe Tankships, Inc., and Indústria e Comércio de Minérios S.A. - ICOMI. The remaining 49% of MBR's capital are held by St. John del Rey Mining Company, a subsidiary of The Hanna Mining Company. MBR iron ore reserves exceed 1.5 billion tons of high grade ore distributed in 36 deposits located in the so-called IRON QUADRANGLE in the State of Minas Gerais. The Aguas Claras Mine is the largest presently known and highest grade deposit owned by MBR. Other mines such as Pico, Mutuca and Jangada are in operation at a combined rate of production of about 2 to 2. 5 million tons per year. The project consists of mine, railroad and marine terminal (slide). The Aguas Claras deposit, which is located about six kilometers southeast of Belo Horizonte the Capital of Minas Gerais, was selected for initial development. The Sistema Regional Centro of the Rede Ferroviária Federal, through its 6th Division known as the "Central " is responsible for the transportation of MBR ore, and provided the necessary railway construction to connect Mine and Terminal. The Terminal is located on Guaiba Island near the entrance to Sepetiba Bay, at about 120 kilometers west of Rio de Janeiro.

Solution mining projects are conducted through one or more boreholes which penetrate en ore body. Proper drilling, completion and maintenance of the boreholes, therefore, is essential to the success of any solution mining operation. Wells drilled for solution mining encounter problems quite similar to problems encountered by the petroleum industry in drilling, completing and maintaining wells for the production of oil, gas or water. Many of the services developed and much of the experience gained by the petroleum industry is applicable to solution mining wells. As in the petroleum industry, each individual wellbore and ore body in a solution mining project provides its own problems. These vary greatly from well to well, and it is not possible to set down data or outline programs that will apply to all wells. Instead, the design of the drilling, completion, production and maintenance programs should be worked out for each individual well. The purpose of this paper, then, is to generally describe materials, equipment and techniques available for these programs and to discuss the purpose and sequence of their use.

Discussion by R.W. Hutchinson Minter's excellent recent paper (1990) on the great paleoplacer gold deposits of the Witwatersrand and its subsequent discussion (Cheney, 1991) and reply (Minter, 1991) provide an informative, interesting and up-to-date review of the geology of these unique ores and some long enigmatic questions regarding their origin. Clearly summarized by Minter (1990) are the compelling sedimentologic and stratigraphic relationships indicating that the Central Rand Group conglomerates are ancient placers and documenting the fluvio-deltaic conditions of their transport and deposition. As Minter (1991) indicates, Cheney's discussion broadens Minter's 1990 coverage of the subject by considering higher and lower stratigraphic units and by adding detailed comments concerning recently published information about metamorphic and age relationships. Cheney's discussion and Minter's reply also readdress the old controversy of epigenetic hydrothermal vs. syndepositional placer origin for these deposits. This controversy has been resurrected by: • recent recognition of hydrothermally-altered granites (HAGS) in the older Archean basement rocks that lie unconformably beneath the Dominion Group rocks north and west of the Witwatersrand depository; • recognition of greenschist metamorphic assemblages in the Witwatersrand strata; and • the presence of interpreted epigenetic mineral assemblages and textures in some of the deposits. These relationships are briefly discussed by Cheney who suggests they may result from later, superimposed metamorphism and deformation and do not prove that the gold was introduced by epigenetic/metamorphogenic processes. In his paper, Minter (1990) cited the 1986 abstract of a subsequently published paper by Hutchinson and Viljoen (1988) who also considered many of these aspects and attempted to integrate them all in abroad genetic hypothesis. In addition, they emphasized the additional important problem of determining the source for the Witwatersrand gold. Although this issue was partially addressed by Reimer (1984), Mossman and Dyer (1985) and Reimer and Mossman (1990), the question has been generally under emphasized in earlier work and was, therefore, not stressed by Minter and Cheney. Reimer (1985) also emphasized the importance of weathering of the basin's Archean hinterland and its affects on Witwatersrand sedimentation. Since the epigenetic hydrothermal hypothesis was essentially discarded in favor of placerist origin, the gold source for these great deposits has generally been attributed to the weathering of lodes in greenstones or granites of the uplifted, older Archean hinterland to the north and west. However, Hutchinson & Viljoen (1988) present evidence that this explanation is inadequate, as well as data in support of an alternative explanation. They suggest that the gold and accompanying abundant, clearly detrital and auriferous pyrite in the conglomerate reefs were derived by erosional degradation of auriferous-pyritic exhalite previously deposited, by shallow marine discharge of hydrothermal fluids, along the fault-bound northwestern margins of the Witwatersrand depository. The auriferous-pyritic exhalites were generated by fluid-rock reactions in the subsurface, particularly in the highly-altered lavas of the Dominion Group but also in adjacent basement granitic rocks. The process envisaged is comparable to that observed in sea floor hydrothermal systems today, although, in this case, it occurred at the margin of a rapidly subsiding, shallow marine or continental basin. Important evidence for this explanation is the anomalous gold content of the ferruginous, shaley strata occurring throughout the Witwatersrand Supergroup and including the distinctive contorted bed that is an iron formation. These layers have been interpreted (Hutchinson and Viljoen, 1988 and 1990) to represent the more distal, finer-grained, mixed chemical/clastic sedimentary strata. Thus, they are the basinal equivalents of the proximal, auriferous-pyritic exhalites that were deposited along the basin's margin and subsequently reworked by sedimentary processes. This gold source explanation resolves many of the enigmatic questions regarding Witwatersrand geology and the reawakened controversy between proponents of hydrothermal and placerist genetic hypotheses. The theory invokes a hydrothermal origin for the gold in the basin-margin pyritic exhalites, thus explaining the visible hydrothermal characteristics (Figs. 1 and 2). It also provides compelling evidence for placer origin by encompassing all of the fluvio-deltaic processes of clastic sedimentary transport and deposition that are clearly summarized by Minter. These characteristics result from the degradational reworking of the pyritic exhalites along the depository's margins. Fluvial reworking, transport and deltaic redeposition of this detritus, along with additional detritus carried into the depository from the hinterland, then formed the conglomerate reefs. Other enigmatic aspects of Witwatersrand geology include: • the rarity of magnetite and ilmenite (the two most common heavy minerals in placer deposits) and the contrary abundance of leucoxene in the conglomerate reefs; • the presence of differing varieties of pyrite (authigenic, allogenic, compact and porous) all of which are auriferous; and • the presence of well-rounded pebbles, even cobbles, of pyrite that, in view of the brittleness of the mineral, could not have been transported great distances from a hinterland.

In the present study, the use of horse residue as an alternative reducing agent in the roasting of a low-grade goethite ore containing 17.60% Fe was investigated. Additional roasting experiments were carried out with corn starch and without reducing agent for comparison. Each roasted product was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic hysteresis (MH) loops analyses. The optimum roasting conditions (roasting temperature [400, 500, and 600 °C], reducing agent/ore ratio [0.04, 0.08, and 0.12], and roasting time [10, 20, and 30 min]) were investigated based on the Taguchi approach. The magnetic susceptibilities of the roasted sample with the addition of reducing agents were higher compared to that of the roasted sample in the absence of reducing agent. Experimental findings indicate that the horse residue can be used as the reducing agent. Finally, an iron ore concentrate assaying a Fe grade of 62.12% with a recovery of 56.93% was prepared using wet magnetic separation at a magnetic intensity of 0.5 T from the ore roasted under the following roasting conditions: roasting temperature of 500 °C, reducing agent/ sample ratio of 0.08, and roasting time of 30 min.

Traditionally, cost effective gains in the capacity of material handling systems were a result of increases in equipment size. In general, the use of maximum capacity components in a system optimizes the production "costs per ton." The trend-"Bigger is Better" will continue in material handling equipment. Since it is rare for plant operators to lament an over abundance of screening capacity, one can safely predict that vibrating screens will follow this trend. Large Vibrating Screens - The Challenge Large vibrating screens represent a unique challenge for Manufacturers, Plant Designers, and Plant Operators. The inherent mode of operation for vibrating screens is self-destructive. More often than Manufacturers admit, Designers plan for, or Operators staff for, a vibrating screen succeeds and self-destructs. This is a problem. It can magnify with larger vibrating screens.

Screening during the production of high-grade lump ore for blast furnace burden, particularly from recently developed ore deposits in Australia, South America, and Africa, has resulted in large tonnages of fine iron ore. Certain owners have decided to stockpile these fines until some later date; however, others have either sold these fines "as is" for agglomeration at the steel plant or have established their own pelletizing plants to produce a premium quality agglomerate. Normally these fines consist of the higher oxides of iron and the hydrated oxides. Unfortunately, grinding these types of materials in a wet process produces a slurry that is difficult to filter to obtain the requisite moisture level for the subsequent balling and indurating operations. The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in fine dry grinding of iron ore and to discuss the various design and operating parameters involved. Although dry grinding of raw feed and clinker has been practiced in the cement industry for many decades, its significant application to the iron ore industry has taken place within the past ten years. Even though the basic concept of dry grinding has been borrowed from the cement industry, the successful application to iron ore grinding has not taken place without some difficulties. Consequently, the application to iron ore has required the solution of several unique design and operating problems.
