In the spring of 1991, Western Aggregates, Inc. began operating the newest expanded shale lightweight aggregate operation in North America. The operation is located in Jefferson County, Colorado, just south of Boulder, at the sight of the former Ideal Basic Industries ("Idealite") lightweight aggregate plant, which was decommissioned in 1975. The "new" facility has been built to principally serve the Denver and Front Range markets, as well as ship products into other locations in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Kansas and Nebraska. Western Aggregates is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Inco U.S., a subsidiary of Inco Limited of Toronto, Canada. Inco Limited is the free world's largest producer of nickel and is a leading producer of copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and platinum group metals, high nickel and super alloys, and specialized engineered products. Inco is constantly seeking new mining related investments that leverage off its mining and processing skills and that meet corporate fmancial objectives. Construction materials are an area presently being pursued by Inco. The basic 'building blocks' of society, from a construction perspective, are sand and gravel, stone, and aggregates. To the vast majority of people these are natural products that are mined, quarried or dredged, and other than washing, screening and crushing, are generally used in their primary form. While these materials vary from quartzite river rock, to calcified limestone, to hard basalt, they are generally classified as "heavy" aggregates. There are, however, other types of aggregates that do not fall under the "heavy" classification, but are used in general construction activities just the same.

West Virginia, although having adequate solar insolation, has witnessed very little actual solar development to date. The reasons for this lack of development are varied, but the primary obstacles to future development appear to be the absence of state-level policies and regulations promoting growth in the solar industry. West Virginia possesses large tracts of under-utilized land throughout the state created by previous mountaintop mining operations that could theoretically be re-purposed for solar farm development. Accomplishing this task will require not only revisions to the current legislation, but also acceptance by utility companies, landowners, and mining companies. Solar developers will need confidence that they can secure revenue from the electricity and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated by solar projects. Additionally, solar companies will need assurance they will be protected from any non-related environmental liabilities that could arise in the future. The primary avenue in bringing significant solar development to West Virginia will come through large corporate clients demanding or partnering with utility companies for incorporation of solar options into their energy portfolio to help meet established sustainability goals. This scenario has been witnessed in other states where a large client demands renewable options. Solar development could also represent a means through which mine operators might alleviate some of their reclamation and bonding obligations; where the landowner could supplement income from their underutilized land holdings; and where displaced miners could be repurposed in solar installation/maintenance jobs. Utilizing data from the West Virginia Permit Database, this report identifies several mine sites that hold potential for solar development in the future. INTRODUCTION The diversification of energy sources in the United States (US) has seen major shifts during the past decade resulting from: • A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques. • Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy. • The emergence of renewable energy sources, proliferated by state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs. Coal was once the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the US for most of the last century, providing approximately 50 percent of the total production capacity. However, within the past decade lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and renewable sources have steadily grown to account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.

The North Temple Tunnel pedestrian underpass in Salt Lake City, UT was built using a pipe canopy method that met significant challenges in potentially running ground conditions. Kilduff Underground Engineering (KUE) was the designer for the 20-foot-diameter SEM tunnel, Design-Build contract. Geotechnical data indicated ground conditions consisted of loose silty gravel for the majority of the face overlying soft to medium stiff clays in the tunnel invert. KUE designed a pipe canopy as pre-support to stabilize cohesionless gravels in the crown, a shotcrete initial liner with lattice girders to minimize disturbance of the finer-grained materials in the invert and a final liner with waterproofing system. The project was presented with a few unique challenges, primarily from the adverse ground conditions, but was successfully completed safely and schedule

Environmental regulation in Mexico has matured dramatically and effectively in the last decade. The gap between environmental regulation in the United States and Mexico is rapidly narrowing, so much so that it is no longer necessarily less burdensome to operate in Mexico from a regulatory perspective. This paper is intended to give a general overview of the system of environmental regulation in Mexico. The actual application of Mexican laws and regulations governing the environment to a specific operation will require a much more detailed review of the applicable environmental standards.

Methane drainage by cross-measure boreholes on retreat longwall faces can be a viable alternative to the vertical gob degas boreholes under favorable circumstances. The research was done in a mine working Pittsburgh Coal seam in Northern West Virginia under U.S.B.M. Co-operative Agreement No. 14-09-0050-3252. The study was the first application of this technique to Pittsburgh coal seam. A total of fourteen, small diameter, inclined boreholes were drilled over a retreat longwall panel from gate roads, to intersect the overlying coal seams. All boreholes were manifolded to a pipeline and the gob gas was extracted by an exhaust fan on surface. The methane capture ratio was poor at 7 to 18% at various stages of the longwall panel. A vertical gob degas borehole captured an additional 20% gas. Poor results were due to premature failures of the cross-measure boreholes leading to air leakage. For better performance the boreholes should be drilled from a point 30 to 45 m from longwall pillar over the largest chain pillar, the standpipe should be grouted for at least 6 m, and the entry containing boreholes and the pipeline must be supported to ensure access for maintenance, and optimization of methane capture. Coursing the ventilation air around longwall such that it forces methane-migration towards cross-measure boreholes can further improve methane capture. The optimum vertical inclination is 45° ± 10°.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.

December 3, 1972, James Wm. White presented the results of an instrumentation and process control survey which was sponsored by the Anaconda Company at the annual Tucson Subsection AIME meeting.(1) Twenty-six responses were obtained from questionnaires sent to 48 operating plants throughout the world. The survey results were discouraging in that there were more failures and problems than examples of success. The following quotes are taken from the text of the paper. "We run our mill by the seat of our pants." 'If these blue sky Ph.D.'s (in the instruments and controls area within research) had some operating experience they wouldn't make a lot of the suggestions they do."

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. The known northern ore zones of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri extend to the drainage divide between the Meramec River draining north and east and that of the Black River draining southward. Intensive geochemical studies related to the environmental impact of the new mining area have been carried out in the vicinity of some of the newly developed mines, mills and smelter complexes (Bolter,1970; Gale, et al, 1973; Wixson, et al, 1969, 1977). Other investigations have related to fringe studies of the Northern New Lead Belt and the possible additions of heavy metals to the surface waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life (Proctor, et al, 1975, 1976). Similar studies have been completed in the Joplin area in the Tri-State district, and in the fringe area near Springfield, Missouri (Proctor, et al, 1974). A surface geochemical study is currently underway on the lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel province near Fredericktown, Missouri (Proctor and Sinha, 1977). This report summarizes some of the distribution patterns of heavy metals in the waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life in the Upper Meramec River drainage basin just north and west of the known northern portions of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. The region studied includes the site of the proposed and somewhat controversial Meramec Dam and the reservoir site behind it. Some 3905 km2 (1508 mi2) are included within the drainage basin of the Upper Meramec River. Six distinct drainage areas are included within the drainage basin; 1) a combined, lightly industrialized and farm area around Rolla and Salem, Missouri representing the Dry Fork drainage; 2) a primitive, mostly forested area with some farms and cattle rancheseast and north of Salem, Missouri comprising the Upper Meramec River

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,300 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, the deposits are divided into several mining zones. The geotechnical properties of mining zones are also different from one zone to another. A successful geotechnical collection system is very important for the mining designs and operations in the Leeville underground mine.

"Coal and coal byproducts produced annually contain enough rare earth elements (REEs) to meet current U.S. demand. The REEs exist in the form of minerals, ion-exchanged elements associated with clays and chemically bonded elements within the organic coal matrix. Researchers at three universities have collaborated to evaluate the effectiveness of existing physical and chemical concentration processes for the recovery of the REEs. The efforts have found that physical separation processes can increase the total REE content in the thickener underflow material collected from a Central Appalachian coal cleaning facility from around 300 ppm to values greater than 17,500 ppm on an ash basis. On the other hand, leaching was effective in recovering REEs from coarse middlings materials collected from multiple coal basins as indicated by recovery values exceeding 80%. Based on material characterization data and process evaluations conducted for several potential feed coal sources, economic recovery of the REEs will require byproduct production of both clean coal and REE concentrate using a process flowsheet that is unique for each source. INTRODUCTION Recent studies initiated by NETL showed that U.S. coals contain significant amounts of rare earth elements (REEs), suggesting that rare earth minerals (REMs) and/or REEs can be produced as byproducts [1]. According to the report, the richest source of REEs is the Central Appalachian coal. At present, there are 208 coal preparation plants located in the region (WV, KY, PA, VA, AL, TN) with a capacity of 166,495 tons/hr or more than 1 billion tons annually [2]. If only a portion of these plants are retrofitted with advanced separation processes, the U.S. coal industry can become a significant producer of RE minerals as byproducts. An inherent advantage of becoming a byproduct producer of REEs is that no mining cost needs to be part of the product cost. Other researchers have also shown that coal can be a significant source of REEs. The average sum of the rare earth plus yttrium (REY) concentration of the world coal is approximately 68.5 ppm, which is lower than the corresponding upper crustal concentration (UCC) (168.4 ppm). However, the average REY content of the mineral matter in the world (404 ppm) and U.S. coals (517 ppm) are 3 times higher than the average UCC. Some of the mineral matter in Russian and Chinese coals have REY concentrations in the range of 0.68 to 2.03% and contain a better source of higher value REYs than many primary rare earth deposits [3]."

The C&NW Ore Dock at Escanaba, Michigan, is a major terminal on Lake Michigan for iron ore pellets arriving from the Marquette Iron Range located 112 km (70 miles) to the north. In an average year, the terminal handles in excess of 8 000 000 Mg (LT) of iron ore pellets consigned to a number of major steel companies. It is important to the steel companies for both cost control and operating efficiency that each cargo be sampled as accurately as possible in order to determine the physical and chemical properties of the pellets. This paper describes the equipment and operating procedures of the sampling facility and Presents some sampling data.

The non-isothermal magnetization roasting process and isothermal magnetization roasting process of siderite ore were investigated using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and a real-time infrared gas analyzer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to analyze the characteristics of samples. The results showed that the decomposition degree and decomposition rate of siderite ore were vitally affected by heating rate and roasting temperature. It was determined that A1 reaction model (f(α) = 1 − α) and A3/2 reaction model (f(α) = (3/2)(1 − α)[−ln(1 − α)]1/2) were the most probable mechanism function of the non-isothermal decomposition process and isothermal decomposition process, respectively. The phase transformation and decomposition mechanism during the roasting process were evaluated. Siderite decomposed in the process of magnetization roasting, released CO and CO2, and transformed into strongly magnetic magnetite. The SEM images highlighted that as the decomposition progressed, the structure of roasted samples was destroyed, and an increasing number of cracks and pores emerged on the surface, which is advantageous to the following grinding process.

The important role of pit slope design in the overall economics of open-pit mining ventures has long been recognized and well documented.1 2 Any economic analysis of a pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risk of slope failure inherent in steeper slope angles. The conventional practice in pit slope design is based on the factor of safety analysis.' The approach uses average values to arrive at a deterministic solution to slope stability. Past analyses based on this approach generally have had several drawbacks: 1. The risk from slope failure could not be quantified. 2. Only relatively simple pit wall geometries were considered. 3. The analyses were performed solely for the benefits of steeper slopes, seldom discussing the potential costs of slope failures. 4. Analyses were seldom considered in a year-by-year mine planning context. Recognizing that average values do not reflect the uncertainty in geomechanical parameters, a probabilistic philosophy to slope design has evolved. 4,5 However, this approach had not been fully developed to include complex slope geometries and mine planning consideration. In order to develop an integrated, pit slope design procedure, a research project was initiated at the University of Arizona during 1973 in conjunction with the Canada Center for Mineral and Energy Teleology. This research resulted in the development of a probabilistic design procedure. The remainder of this paper gives an overview of the probabilistic design procedure and a discussion of the requirements for the benefit-cost analysis of a pit slope design. Finally, the results of a case study undertaken at an operating mine are given.

"INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

"Wear resistant 25% Cr hard cast iron is a heterogeneous material containing 1,600 HV hard chromium carbides embedded into martensitic matrix. It is the most used cast alloy in wear operations of mining industry, chemical industry, fracking, etc. During the last decade the hard iron manufacturers increased wear resistance in the following ways: • Reduce / eliminate harmful retained austenite and chromium + carbon depleted areas especially within eutectic carbide cells. In Max5A the improved 25% Cr alloy brittle carbide eutectic cells are removed which increases toughness. • Delay delamination between chromium carbides and matrix particularly during sliding abrasion wear. Delamination commences at the weakest chromium carbide – matrix contact lines exposing chromium carbide to localized bending stresses which gradually chip carbides away. Once the chromium carbide base is removed accelerated wear degradation occurs. • Evenly randomize and avoid discontinuities in the chromium carbide network. When chromium carbides are perpendicularly positioned to the wear surface wear rate is minimized. On the contrary the highest wear rate takes place when 3D oriented chromium carbides are parallel with the wear surface. In this case chromium carbides cover top network discontinuities being just matrix supported which leads to rapid carbide cracking. The new hard iron discussed in this paper fulfils and exceeds the above requirements increasing the casting service life around 250% in various wear operations. Physical and mechanical properties of Max5A are compared with well manufactured Industry Standard 25% Cr hard iron. The paper presents practical accomplishments obtained in the USA, South America and India. INTRODUCTION The chemical composition of Max5A and Industry Standard 25% Cr are identical like specified by ASTM A532 Class III Type A requesting C = 2.0-3.3% and Cr = 23.0-30.0%. Manganese, silicon, nickel, molybdenum and copper contents are limited by maximum accepted quantities.[1] According to published data the eutectic chromium carbides chemical composition of 25% Cr hard iron is Cr = 54% and C = 8% which indicates strong depletion of chromium and carbon along chromium carbide - matrix interfaces. [2] The optimized Max5A microstructure has minimized retained austenite, is devoid of harmful carbide eutectic cells and has the most advantageous chromium carbide and secondary chromium carbide morphology. This favorable microstructure increases wear resistance, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The paper compares the Max5A microscopic features and mechanical – physical properties with similar properties of high quality Industry Standard 25% Cr."

The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. If I told you tonight at the outset that my prognastications for the future of mine ventilation were imparted to me by a palm reader or inspired by a vision, you'd dismiss what I had to say before I said it! If, on the other hand, I told you that my forecasts were the result of an elaborate computer model, derived from a complex algorithm, which in turn relied on finite element analysis -- and the entire projection confirmed by on-site experiments with a turbo hybrid-flow mine fan -- you'd sit up in anticipation and hang on my every word!! All of which places me in a terrible dilemma, because my predictions really lie somewhere in between. My intent is to talk to you out of my background of forty years in mine ventilation, looking ahead to conditions that I expect to prevail in the next fifteen years. You may be curious why I picked an unlikely time span of 55 years for my overview, and my response is that it bridges a career lifetime. "The last forty", of course, corresponds with the period of my professional employment since graduating with a B.S. and M.S. here at Penn State. "The next fifteen" bridges the period I expect (the Lord willing) to remain professionally active -- and coincidently brings us into the beginning of the 21st century. (I must confess to stacking the deck a bit: Since it's infinitely harder to look ahead than to look behind, I purposely minimized the forecast period and maximized the history! Besides, "forty" and "fifteen" have a nice phonetic ring, perfect 20/20 vision sums to "forty", etc., etc.). With these disclaimers, I'll invite you to join me now in a fast 55-year overview of mine ventilation, of necessity limited to a broad-brush treatment of the subject. (After all, this is an after-dinner talk, not a marathon!) In each- segment, I've selected the seven topics that seem to me of paramount importance: in the first part, seven accomplishments in retrospect, and in the last, seven expectations for the future. (The number "seven" needn't confound you, either: In the bible, it signifies "wholeness" or "completeness".))

The existence of resins in some coal deposits in various parts of the world has been known for many years. These resins vary considerably in chemical structure and properties. The resin that is found in Utah coal, however, is rather unique, and has properties particularly attractive for the manufacture of printing ink mastics and adhesives. This resin is a rather dark, very high melting point, low molecular weight hydrocarbon resin. Its typical properties are shown in Table I. Its largest use by far, has been in the printing ink industry. The history of Utah coal resin is interesting, but unfortunately one of disappointment and failure.

Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.
